Recently, mulberry paper has attracted much attention as a substrate for paper-based energy storage and conversion systems due to the excellent mechanical and chemical stability arising from its holocellulose-based structure and low lignin content, which overcome the limitations of typical cellulose-based paper. The formation of an electrically conducting layer on the mulberry paper is a key step in fabricating the mulberry paper-based energy storage and conversion system. Various methods such as coating, printing, composite formation, and carbonization have been used to provide mulberry paper with electrical conductivity. The properties of mulberry paper electrodes largely depend on the choice of fabrication method, with each method having distinct advantages and disadvantages. Despite of the importance of the processing technology for forming the conducting layer, no comprehensive review on the topic exists to-date, especially with respect to mulberry paper. Hence, the present review introduces the research trends on mulberry paper-based energy storage and conversion devices, and focuses on the technology for fabricating the conducting layer. The advantages and disadvantages of the various fabrication methods are discussed in order to provide a future research direction for mulberry paper-based electrode fabrication, and for its application to the energy storage and conversion system. Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) are powerful platforms for point-of-need testing since they are inexpensive devices fabricated in different shapes and miniaturized sizes, ensuring better portability. Additionally, the readout and detection systems can be accomplished with portable devices, allying with the features of both systems. These devices have been introduced as promising analytical platforms to meet critical demands involving rapid, reliable, and simple testing. They have been applied to monitor species related to environmental, health, and food issues. Herein, an outline of chronological events involving PADs is first reported. This work also introduces insights into fundamental parameters to engineer new analytical platforms, including the paper type and device operation. The discussions involve the main analytical techniques used as detection systems, such as colorimetry, fluorescence, and electrochemistry. It also showed recent advances involving PADs, especially combining optical and electrochemical detection into a single device. Dual/combined detection systems can overcome individual barriers of the analytical techniques, making possible simultaneous determinations, or enhancing the devices' sensitivity and/or selectivity. In addition, this review reports on distance-based detection, which is also considered a trend in analytical chemistry. Distance-based detection offers instrument-free analyses and avoids user interpretation errors, which are outstanding features for analyses at the point of need, especially for resource-limited regions. Finally, this review provides a critical overview of the practical specifications of the recent analytical platforms involving PADs, demonstrating their challenges. For shaped charge blasting projects in mining, civil engineering, and similar fields, it is proposed to modify the charge structure by combining slotted tubes and shaped charge liners to obtain a new type of charge structure. This aims to achieve directional rock breaking through the focused action of the shaped charge. The influence of different slotted pipe materials on the directional rock-breaking effect of concentrated energy using a new charge structure is explored through theoretical analysis combined with model test study, high-speed camera, stress–strain gauge, and other equipment. A comparison is made between slotted pipes made of aluminum, kraft paper, and PVC, with the cutting width of 2 mm. Based on the characteristics of the cracks formed after blasting, the new charge structure made of aluminum slotted pipe produces a penetrating crack that is almost consistent with the pre-cracking direction. Based on the corresponding characteristics of successively released blasting energy, the guiding and convergence effect of the new charge structure made of aluminum slotted pipe on the explosion energy is greater than that of the new charge structure made of the other two types of slotted pipe material. According to the strain data measured after blasting, the peak arrival time of the strain peak in the direction of the slotted pipe on one side of the shaped hood is shorter than that in the other two directions, and the peak strain is greater than that in the other two directions while having a better energy gathering effect. Based on the findings, the new charge structure with directional energy concentration has a damage reduction effect. Furthermore, the material of aluminum slotted pipe is found to be better than PVC slotted pipe, whereas the material of PVC slotted pipe is better than kraft paper slotted pipe in achieving directional rock breaking. Anthraquinone has been widely utilized in the pulp and paper industry as a catalyst for alkaline cooking; however, its application has been recently restricted due to its potential carcinogenic effects. Hence, safer alternatives to anthraquinone have been explored. Agro-industrial by-products have been utilized as sustainable sources of value-added materials. In this study, teak (Tectona grandis) wood waste from Gunung Kidul, Indonesia, which naturally contains lapachol, was utilized as a biocatalyst to enhance delignification and improve pulp yield in alkaline cooking for pulp and paper production. The use of lapachol as a cooking catalyst was investigated for kraft, soda, and prehydrolysis soda cooking. Lapachol accelerated delignification and retained carbohydrate in all three alkaline cooking methods, with its effect being more pronounced in kraft cooking than in soda cooking. A solution of cellulose dissolved in NaOH/urea was investigated for extending the life of three different model papers. Their mechanical properties such as tensile strength, folding endurance, and tearing strength were tested before and after the treatment. These samples were also characterized by SEM, XRD and FTIR. The results showed that the pre-protection for the papers was absolutely necessary before spraying the cellulose solution on the papers, otherwise the papers would be destroyed in a matter of seconds by the strong alkalinity of the cellulose solution. The pretreatment of impregnating the papers with ethyl acetate in ethanol solution could greatly extend the time that the papers contacted with the cellulose solution to 8 min before water washing. After the treatment, the mechanical properties of the samples improved significantly, especially for their folding endurance, indicating an increase in the interfiber bonds, which improved the flexibility of the papers. The treatment neutralized the acid in the papers and greatly improved the anti-aging properties of the papers, meanwhile the appearance of the paper changed slightly. Currently, water-soluble chitosan (WSC) has been developed through a pressurized hydrolysis process. Compared to acid-soluble chitosan, the WSC is soluble in water, and it is used in many applications such as pharmaceutical, food, and composite industries. The FTIR and thermal properties such as TGA were investigated to determine the effect as a sizing agent material on paper composite. Furthermore, the influence of pulp weight variation of 1, 1.5, and 2 g and WSC concentration of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0% (w/v) on the physical, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties of the paper composites were studied. The density and grammage increased after incorporating due to the increase in the dissolved concentration of WSC. The mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break, were also improved to the highest value of 2.76 MPa, 170.58 MPa, and 2.67% at 1.0% WSC and 1 g pulp concentration, respectively. The paper composite incorporated WSC also showed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli). However, increased concentration of WSC up to 1% caused inhibition zone of Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) bacteria. Paper-based relics as important carriers of human history and civilization have been facing severe damage problems, and their protection is a major project for cultural heritage restoration. So far, safe, high-efficiency, and multifunctional protection materials are still urgent to be developed. Herein, through screening a series of alkaline nano-oxides and cleverly combining the advantages of modified natural polymer (quaternized chitosan) and inorganic nanomaterials (ZnO), we successfully prepared their functional nanocomposites with multiple properties and pioneered their smart application for multifunctional protection of paper relics. By spraying loads, this kind of nanocomposites can effectively and safely inhibit the acid degradation of paper relics and long-term maintain a natural or weak basic state even under harsh accelerated aging conditions. Meanwhile, the coating of nanocomposites does not change the chromatic aberration but partially improves the hydrophobicity. Moreover, the mechanical properties of paper relics are reinforced up to more than one time for all-around tensile strength, folding endurance, and tearing strength. It is worth noting that the usage of nanocomposites can avoid the discoloration or fading of pH-sensitive pigments/dyes and prevent the blue/red inks from ink-spreading. By integrating the anti-microorganism effects of the two components, the nanocomposites have exhibited a broad antimicrobial capacity for both fungi (e.g., Plectosphaerella cucumerina and Aspergillus unguis) and bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus). The acquired knowledge not only represents an advanced step for designing functionalized inorganic/polymer nanocomposite but also sheds light on the multi-functional integrated protection of paper-based relics. In order to solve the hygroscopicity of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and improve its flame retardancy, hydrophobic and flame retardant groups were introduced on the surface of APP by means of surface coating. It was blended with styrene acrylic emulsion (AAS) as the reinforcing resin and applied to the automobile engine air filter paper. The structure of the modified particles was confirmed by FT-IR TGA showed that the initial decomposition temperature of the modified particles decreased by 15 ℃, the decomposition rate decreased by about 5%, and the carbon residue rate at 800 ℃ increased from 21.73 to 44.92%; The DSC displayed that the blend resin had fine compatibility. Particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that the large size modified APP particles were diffused into styrene acrylate emulsion particles and reconstituted to form a more compact and smaller particle size. The particles had a core shell structure with a shell thickness of 17 nm. These phenomena revealed the evolution of latex particles after blending. The air filter paper reinforced by blend resin has better mechanical properties and good water resistance. After absorbing water, the burst retention rate of air filter paper is more than 50%, and the stiffness retention rate is more than 20%. Concrete engineers are always looking for materials that can be employed to improve the mechanical performance and lower the carbon footprint of construction products. In this regard, cellulose, a biobased material presents a massive opportunity for its application in the construction industry. Office paper waste (OPW) is cellulose-rich feedstock and a low-cost source to produce cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was used for the production of CNCs from OPW using acid hydrolysis technique at different hydrolysis conditions; time (30–90 min), temperature (40–50 °C), and OPW/acid ratio (1:15-1:25 w/v). The physicochemical properties of CNCs were analyzed using various techniques. All the investigated responses mainly well-fitted RSM cubic models (R2 = 0.9460 to 0.9969) with insignificant lack-of-fit (p-value < 0.05). The highest yield (> 83%) was achieved at the lowest process time, temperature, and high OPW: acid ratio. The increase in process time and deinked OPW: acid ratio from 30 to 90 min and 1:15 to 1:25 resulted in higher crystallinity of CNCs. However, higher process temperature (50 °C) showed a reduction in crystallinity and length of CNCs. The optimization results of CNC production for meeting application of the CNCs as a construction material are time 90 min, temperature 40 °C, and OPW: acid ratio 1:25. The resulting CNC-mortar was tested under mechanical loadings and yielded 37.4 MPa compressive strength and 5.1 MPa of flexure strength. Technological advancements in flexible and wearable electronics have driven a boom in high-performance flexible electrodes. In this study, a simple and low-cost bio-inspired filter paper (FP) template method using the interfacial-aided polyethyleneimine-functionalized filter paper (FP-PEI) was developed to fabricate highly flexible silver-based conductive films. The FP was modified through amination to obtain FP-PEI with the rigid cellulose backbone and the flexible side chain of grafted amino groups, which played a key role as an interfacial layer during the chemical deposition of fractal-structured silver particles (FSSPs). The naturally porous and rough network structures of FP templates provided structural support and network for the deposition of conductive materials. In addition, the high porosity of FP facilitated the effective transfer of electrons, and its nano- or micro-scale rough surface structure promoted the formation of strong adhesion between the cellulose substrate and the conductive layer, which was crucial for the conductive stability of the device. The obtained conductive films (FP-PEI/FSSPs) exhibited a low sheet resistance of 1.47 Ω sq−1, a conductivity of 3401 S m−1, and good mechanical properties with a stress strength of 6.17 MPa. Moreover, FP-PEI/FSSPs exhibited a stable electrical conductivity (the sheet resistance only increased by 0.06 Ω sq–1 through 500 bending cycles), thermal stability (the maximum thermal decomposition rate increased from 349.3 to 357.8 °C), and oxidation resistance (the sheet resistance increased by only 0.04 Ω sq–1 after FP was exposed to the air for 15 days). The pulp and paper industry have historically been one of the world's largest consumers of freshwater resources and producers of wastewater discharges. More than 250 chemicals have been identified in effluents including chlorine-based organic and other toxic compounds. Some of these are resistant to biological degradation such as color-related compounds. The goal of this study was to analyze the real wastewater from the paper mill and to suggest a photocatalytic treatment method in order to reduce the organic pollutants load. The efficiency of the commonly used treatment photocatalytic processes (photo-TiO2 and photo-Fenton reagent) on the treatment of real paper mill effluent was investigated. Additionally, the performance of TiO2 photocatalytic reactions with and without the addition of hydrogen peroxide was also examined. For the experiment, a 500 mL pyrex UV reactor and a 125-W high-pressure mercury lamp, surrounded by pyrex filter blocking wavelengths below 290 nm were used. Waste paper holds great potential as a substrate for the microbial production of bioplastic (Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB)). This study aimed to produce PHB by utilizing office paper as a substrate using Cupriavidus necator through batch and fed-batch simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) approach. For the batch experiment, different loadings of shredded office paper (3, 5 and 10%) with two different pretreatments H2O2 (OPH) and H2O2 and Triton X-100 (OPTH) were carried out. For the fed-batch experiment, paper loading started with 3% and two more additions were made at 36 and 84 h. Both experiments were conducted at 30 °C, 200 rpm and pH 7 using 55.5 FPU/g of cellulase and 37.5 CBU/g of β-glucosidase with a fixed amount of nitrogen source. High PHB yield was observed with OPH in all loadings, though the OPHT showed a better hydrolysis. Maximum PHB yield (4.27 g/L) was achieved with 10% OP on the sixth day of fermentation in batch SSF. Whereas, maximum PHB yield (4.19 g/L) was obtained within a shorter time (66 h)with OPH in the fed-batch experiment. The extracted PHB showed well-matched characteristic features to the standard PHB. Finally, this study proves the feasibility of employing the SSF process for PHB production using waste paper as an alternative approach to overcome the shortcoming of the separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) process. Rapid and accurate bioburden detection has become increasingly necessary for food, health, pharmaceutical and environmental applications. To detect bioburden accurately, and in a highly sensitive manner, we have fabricated a novel microfluidic device with an integrated filter to trap the cells. Bioburden is detected on the filter paper in situ using the redox reaction of fluorescent label resorufin and a portable multichannel fluorometer is used for fluorescence measurement. The microfluidic device was fabricated in a facile, low-cost, and rapid way with microwave-induced thermally assisted bonding. To characterize the bonding quality of the microfluidic cassettes, different tests were performed, and the filter paper material and size were optimized. Primary Bacillus subtilis culture bacterial samples were filtered through the device to validate and investigate the performance parameters. Our results show that a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.037 CFU/mL can be achieved through this microfluidic device whereas the LOD in a normal microfluidic cassette in the fluorometer and the golden standard spectrophotometer are 0.378 and 0.128 CFU/mL respectively. The results depict that three to ten times LOD improvement is possible through this microfluidic cassette and more sensitive detection is possible depending on the volume filtered within a rapid 3 min. This novel microfluidic device along with the fluorometer can be used as a rapid portable tool for highly sensitive, accurate and high-throughput bacterial detection for different applications. Simple, portable, and low-cost paper-based sensors are alternative devices that have the potential to replace high-cost sensing technologies. The compatibility of the paper base biosensors for both chemical and biochemical accentuates its feasibility for application in clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and food quality monitoring. High concentration of copper in blood serum and urine is associated with diseases like liver diseases, carcinomas, acute and chronic infections, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Detection of copper concentration can give an early sign of Alzheimer disease. Apart from that genetic Wilson's disease can be detected by evaluating the concentration of copper in the urine. In view of the above advantages, a novel and the highly sensitive paper-based sensor has been designed for the selective detection of Cu2+ ions. The fast and highly sensitive chemiresistive multi-dye system sensor can detect Cu2+ ions selectively in as low as 2.23 ppm concentration. Least interference has been observed for counter ion in the detection of Cu2+. Copper chloride, nitrate, and acetate were used to validate the detection process. This assay provides a very high selectivity of Cu2+ ion over other metal cations such as Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, etc. The easy preparation and high stability of dye solutions, easy functionalization of the paper-based sensors, high selectivity over other cations, low interference of counter anion, and significantly low detection limit of 2.23 ppm make it an effective Cu2+ ion sensor for real-time application in near future. Purpose: Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is common among populations globally, and in Asia and Malaysia. The purpose of this Position Paper is to propose recommendations for both clinicians and non-clinicians to promote vitamin D sufficiency in Malaysian adults. Formation of a national multisector, multidisciplinary alliance is also proposed to progress initiatives relating to safe sun exposure, adequate vitamin D intake through food fortification, and vitamin D supplementation for high-risk groups. Methods: Literature reviews were undertaken to inform summaries of the following: vitamin D status globally and in Asian and Malaysian populations, vitamin D status among individuals with common medical conditions, and current recommendations to achieve vitamin D sufficiency through sun exposure, food intake and supplementation. Recommendations were based on the findings of the literature reviews, recent European guidance on vitamin D supplementation, the 2018 road map for action on vitamin D in low- and middle-income countries, and research recommendations proposed by the Malaysian Ministry of Health in 2017. Results: Recommendations on assessment of vitamin D in the adult Malaysian population include using serum or plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration as a biomarker, widespread participation by Malaysian laboratories in the Vitamin D Standardization Program, adoption of the US Endocrine Society definitions of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency, and development of a comprehensive nationwide vitamin D status study. Specific high-risk groups are identified for vitamin D assessment and recommendations relating to loading doses and ongoing management are also made. Conclusion: This Position Paper provides individual clinicians and national stakeholder organisations with clear recommendations to achieve vitamin D sufficiency in the adult population of Malaysia. Ten white-rot fungal isolates were evaluated for the decolorization potential of pulp and paper mill effluent. Trametes elegans PP17-06, Pseudolagarobasidium sp. PP17-33, and Microporus sp.2 PP17-20 showed the highest decolorization efficiencies between 42 and 54% in 5 d. To reveal the mechanisms involved in decolorization and assess the long-term performance, PP17-06, which showed the highest decolorization efficiency, was further investigated. It could reduce the ADMI color scale by 63.6% in 10 d. However, extending the treatment period for more than 10 d did not significantly enhance the decolorization efficiencies. The maximum MnP activity of 3.27 U L−1 was observed on the 6 d during the biodegradation. In comparison, laccase activities were low with the maximum activity of 0.38 U L−1 (24 d). No significant LiP activities were monitored during the experiment. Dead fungal biomass showed an optimum decolorization efficiency of 44.18% in 8 d employing the biosorption mechanism. No significant changes in the decolorization efficiency were observed after that, suggesting the equilibrium status was reached. A highly sensitive, flexible, cheap, and biodegradable biosensor has been fabricated to detect paraoxon-ethyl (PE) more effectively. In this work, copper oxide (CuO) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-modified Whatman paper (WP)-based electrode are fabricated and then characterized by using different techniques. For the fabrication of CuO@PEDOT:PSS/WP electrode, firstly, the PEDOT:PSS/WP was optimized by various solvents such as ethylene glycol (EG), 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethylformamide (DMF), N,N-dimethyl acetamide (NMA), and glycerol to enhance the conductivity. The EG-treated PEDOT:PSS/WP electrode shows maximum conductivity (1.4 × 10− 2 S cm− 1) among all solvents. Further, the incorporation of CuO enhances the electrochemical performance of proposed biosensor. All electrochemical results validate that the proposed biosensor (AChE/CuO@PEDOT:PSS/WP) shows high sensitivity and low detection limit of 9.1279 µA/nM and 0.42 nM, respectively. The proposed paper electrode can be a highly promising alternative to conventional electrodes that are known to have limited applications due to their high cost and limited flexibility. In this article, we present a mathematical model and numerical simulation of the coffee-ring effect on porous papers. The numerical method is based on Monte Carlo simulation. The proposed model is simple but can capture the main mechanism of coffee stain formation on porous papers. Several numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm. We can obtain the coffee-ring effect on porous papers as the computer simulation results. Aim: Over the last few decades, gut microbiota research has been the focus of intense research and this field has become particularly important. This research aimed to provide a quantitative evaluation of the 100 most-cited articles on gut microbiota and IBS and highlight the most important advances in this field. Methods: The database Web of Science Core Collection was used to download the bibliometric information the top 100 most-cited papers. Microsoft Excel 2021, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, R software, and an online analytical platform (https://bibliometric.com/) were was applied to perform bibliometric analysis of these papers. Results: The total citation frequency in the top 100 article ranged from 274 to 2324, with an average citation of 556.57. A total of 24 countries/regions made contributions to the top 100 cited papers, and USA, Ireland, and China were the most top three productive countries. Cryan JF was the most frequently nominated author, and of the top 100 articles, 20 listed his name. Top-cited papers mainly came from the Gastroenterology (n = 13, citations = 6373) and Gut (n = 9, citations = 3903). There was a significant citation path, indicating publications in molecular/biology/immunology primarily cited journals in molecular/biology/genetics fields. Keywords analysis suggested that the main topics on gut microbiota and IBS were mechanisms of microbiome in brain-gut axis." Behavior" was the keyword with the strongest burst strength (2.36), followed by "anxiety like behavior" (2.24), "intestinal microbiota" (2.19), and "chain fatty acid" (1.99), and "maternal separation" (1.95). Traditionally, clinician educators are tasked with the responsibility of training future physician workforce. However, there is limited identification of skills required to fulfill this responsibility and a lack of consensus on effective faculty development for career growth as a clinician educator. The newly released Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Clinician Educator (CE) Milestones framework outlines important skills for clinician educators and provides the opportunity to create robust faculty development. In this paper, members of the Society of General Internal Medicine Education Committee discuss the importance of these CE Milestones, outline the novel themes highlighted in the project, and provide recommendations for proper application on both the individual and institutional levels to optimize faculty development. The paper discusses strategies for how to apply the CE Milestones as a tool to create a culture of professional growth and self-directed learning. Using a reflective approach, CE faculty and mentors can identify areas of proficiency and opportunities for growth, thereby creating individualized professional development plans for career success. Institutions should use aggregate CE Milestones data as a needs assessment of their faculty "population" to create targeted faculty development. Most importantly, institutions should not use CE Milestones for high-stakes assessments but rather encourage reflection by CE faculty and create subsequent robust faculty development programs. Tissue products such as facial tissue and paper towels have been playing a crucial role in promoting hygiene and maintaining good health, since they are commonly available and widely used nowadays. The production of low-density tissue paper typically involves a key creping process that contains pressing and adhering the wet web onto a high-speed Yankee cylinder, followed by releasing the creped sheet with a stationary creping blade to form periodic micro-folds within the tissue structure. This paper discusses and reviews the mechanisms of tissue creping technology, as well as the factors that impact the creping process and tissue properties. These factors primarily include the dryness of the tissue web, creping rate, properties of the pulp raw material, Yankee coating, crepe doctor blade, and tissue drying machines. It is indicated that the creping process, as a multifaceted and integrated treatment for tissue production, can be significantly enhanced through the concerted efforts of the aforementioned factors to achieve greater creping efficiency. However, further endeavors are necessary to address the constraints stemming from the pilot experimental equipment and data, as well as modeling simulation, to enable a more comprehensive examination of the creping process and its mechanism. Paper-based material is receiving more and more attention as an alternative of plastics in flexible electronics. However, conventional paper made of cellulose fibers is opaque owing to its micron-sized void space among fibers. Herein, cellulose fiber paper was changed into transparent paper by sequentially coating cationic cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The morphology, transparency, thermal and mechanical properties were analyzed. The results show that the coating of CNFs reduces the micron-sized void space in the cellulose fiber paper, favoring the further improvement on the transparency of paper by coating PVP. By optimizing the coating amount of CNFs and PVP, a transparent paper with a transmittance of 88.5 % at 550 nm is obtained. The as-prepared transparent paper also shows improved thermal stability, slightly increased tensile strength and significantly enhanced deformation resistance. Chitosan is a biopolymer that has shown promising results for surface treatment of paper to enhance barrier and mechanical properties. Commercially, chitosan is available with a wide range of degree of deacetylation (DD). Herein, effect of DD on performance of chitosan in surface application of paper is investigated. Surface application of chitosan of different DD (77%, 84% and 94%) was done at a dose of 1.0 ± 0.2 g/m2 on kraft paper and comparison in terms of strength, structural, surface and barrier properties of paper was performed. Different DD of chitosan was confirmed by FTIR analysis. Results showed that breaking length of paper maximally increased by 15.2%/26.6% in machine direction (MD)/cross direction (CD), respectively after surface application of 94% DD chitosan followed by 77% DD and 84% DD. The maximum increase in burst index, stretch in MD and TEA in both directions of paper was found after surface application of 94% DD chitosan. Results attained by 77% DD and 84% DD chitosan for improvement in burst index, stretch and tensile energy absorption of paper were also encouraging. Maximum increase in stiffness was observed in CD with application of 84% DD chitosan. Double fold of paper also increased the maximum after surface application of 84% DD chitosan. The best results of contact angle, surface energy, Cobb60 and water vapor transmission rate were attained after surface application with 94% DD chitosan whereas the results attained by 77% DD and 84% DD chitosan for contact angle, surface energy, Cobb60 were also encouraging. Paper folding-and-punching tests are used to measure spatial abilities in humans. This paper presents a qualitative model for paper folding (QPF) and a computer game (Paper Folding Game) developed to apply and show the reasoning capabilities of the QPF model. This interactive game presents paper-folding activities intended to help users train and understand how to fold a paper to get a specific shape. Then, it presents paper-folding-and-punching tests to the players. The Paper Folding Game can automatically generate paper-folding-and-punching questions with varying degrees of difficulty depending on the number of folds and holes made, thus producing additional levels for training. The reasoning mechanisms in the QPF model are used by the Paper Folding Game to infer the right answer to each paper-folding-and-punching question. This reasoning capability allows the game to provide feedback to the players when they are wrong and also to create other plausible answers automatically, so that random question-answers are shown to the players in the master-mode. This document is a commentary on a paper about statistics of marked point processes. As research becomes more interdisciplinary, it is becoming more common for papers not to be published in their own disciplinary journals. This phenomenon is further amplified by the large number of multi-disciplinary journals in China's social sciences, and prompts this study to explore the influence of discipline consistency between papers and published journals on citations. In this study, 476,327 Chinese papers in Economics, Law, and Library & Information Science published between 1998 and 2016 are collected from the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) as research samples. Descriptive statistics, Kruskal–Wallis test, Chi-square test, and regression analysis are used to compare the citation count and citation rate between papers published in own disciplinary journals, other disciplinary journals, and multi-disciplinary journals. It is found that papers whose discipline is consistent with published journals have a statistically significant citation advantage, which can be explained by the principle of least effort and scholars' familiarity-based journal evaluation. The paper proposes a new approach to gradient porous composites based on the Ti3Al(Si)C2 MAX phase. This approach is based on the production of preceramic paper with the different content of the powder filler based on MAX phases and their spark plasma sintering. The analysis of the microstructure and phase composition is conducted for these composites. It is shown that the obtained composites have a clear interface between layers with different porosity. It is found that the content of organic components in preceramic paper affects the phase composition of the fabricated composites. The MAX phase content in dense and porous layers is 86 and 56 vol.%, respectively. Microhardness measurements performed in the composite cross-section show the hardness of 600 to 800 HV, depending on the layer porosity and phase composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recycling is emerging as both a viable alternative to extraction in many industries and a cornerstone of the circular economy. In this paper, we assess the role of paper and cardboard recycling on the forest sector, from both an economic and carbon perspective. For this purpose, we add the recycling industry to an existing forest-sector model in an attempt to capture its effects on other wood products and the overall forest resource. As the forest sector has an important potential for climate change mitigation, this model allows us to assess the effects of increased paper and cardboard recycling on the availability of the natural resource and the carbon balance of the forest sector. We show that these results are strongly linked to the hypotheses of substitutability and/or complementarity of recycled pulp and virgin pulpwood. Although we find increased emissions at the pulp sector level, the effects on emissions in other wood products are small. When pulp products are considered substitutes, we find the impact on total net sequestration to be positive. With the widespread application of graphene paper in energy storage, an increasing amount of research is focused on how to enhance its mechanical properties and specific surface area. In this study, flexible porous graphene papers were prepared using a graphene oxide (GO) dispersion and polyurethane diol oligomer (PUO) via electrospray deposition. The improved mechanical properties of the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) papers were attributed to the cross-linking of PUO molecules with the neighbouring GO flakes through π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions during the mixing of the GO dispersion and PUO. In addition, owing to the bursting of the bubbles introduced by PUO during the reduction process, many porous structures appeared inside the rGO paper. The clinical importance of blood group (BG) antigens is related to their ability to induce immune antibodies that can cause hemolysis. Yet, ABO and D (Rh) are still considered to be the key antigens for healthy blood transfusion and secondary antigens are the next priority. Serological typing is the most widely used typing method. Rapid and accurate blood grouping plays an important role in some clinical conditions, rather than conventional techniques. Hence, developing a simple and economical model for rapid blood grouping would facilitate these tests. In recent decades, paper-based microfluidics such as μPADs has gained much interest in wide application areas such as point-of-care diagnostic. In this study, we evaluated μPADs that are performed for blood grouping and its recent progress. A comprehensive literature search was performed using databases including PUBMED, SCOPUS, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Keywords were blood grouping or typing, paper analytical device, rapid test, etc. After investigation of search results, 16 papers from 2010 to 2020 were included. Further information in detail was classified in Table 1. Generally, two principles for blood typing μPADs are introduced. The lateral chromatographic flow method and the vertical flow-through method that detects BG in a visual-based manner. To detect results with acceptable clarity many factors and challenges like paper, blood sample, buffer, Ab and RBC interaction and also μPADs stability need to be considered, which are discussed. In conclusion, the simplicity, stability, cheapness, portability and biocompatibility of μPADs for blood grouping confirming its utility and also they have the capability to robust, universal blood-grouping platform. The wettability of the paper surface is greatly affected by the wettability of the pulp fibers. We conducted this study in order to understand the relationship between the wettability of a single fiber of recycled pulp and the strength of recycled paper, as well as the inter-fiber bonding strength. The contact angle was determined from a series of photographs of the pulp fiber and the water silhouettes at the point of contact. The contact line and profile history were continuously photographed in every 1 s after the initial contact. The recycled softwood kraft pulp fibers were clearly much less hydrophilic than the original fibers, regardless of whether the fibers had been bleached or not. The contact angle of the original chemi-thermomechanical pulp fiber was much higher than that of the original softwood bleached kraft pulp fiber. Furthermore, increased number of recycling decreased the contact angle of the chemi-thermomechanical pulp fiber. The Page equation was used to evaluate the strength contributions of single fiber and fiber–fiber bonding to tensile strength of paper. As a result, an increase in weakness factor of fiber–fiber bonding strength was obtained for the recycled softwood kraft pulp handsheet. On the other hand, the weakness factor of the original chemi-thermomechanical pulp handsheet decreased with recycling. In addition, the weakness factor of fiber–fiber bonding strength and the contact angles of the provided softwood bleached kraft pulp fibers bore a proportional relationship to each other. While gamified technology integration in vocabulary instruction within a flipped classroom has yielded beneficial teaching outcomes, specific studies have raised concerns about potential adverse effects linked to this approach. As a result, conducting a comparative analysis between gamified technology and conventional paper-based methods within the flipped classroom framework has become essential. This analysis aims to foster the development of a targeted teaching approach that adeptly addresses the unique needs of students. This study employed a sequential explanatory research design to examine the effectiveness of flipped classroom with gamified technology and paper-based method in teaching vocabulary to students with different proficiency levels. Quantitative data was gathered from a pretest and a posttest, whilst qualitative data was collected through teachers' guided reflection. Using Academic Word List (300 target words), control groups employed a paper-based, while experimental groups applied gamified technology (Quizlet, Kahoot!, Quizizz, Socrative, and Google Form), which lasted 10 weeks. The participants were 144 non-English major students who took a general English course in the 2nd semester of 2023. Quantitative data analysis ran in SPSS 25 using Paired Sample t-Test and One-way ANOVA. The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic progression. The results showed that gamified technology did not affect students' learning outcomes, while the paper-based method resulted conversely. It revealed that the paper-based method is more effective than gamified technology for students in general, with low proficiency and high-proficiency level. Further, teachers' beliefs admitted distinctive issues that gamified technology was more effective for high-proficiency learners, whereas paper-based was more effective for low-proficiency learners. Sorption properties of paper products are important when applying paper as the packaging material. Hydrophobicity, i.e. reduced affinity of paper surface to liquid water, is of particular importance from the point of view of the direct impact on packed goods. However, hygroscopicity of the material is significant during storage of goods. The analysis of changes in the hygroscopic properties of paper products induced by the treatment with silane modified starch was presented. The results on the hygroscopicity of treated paper were related to the previously published results on the hydrophobicity. The discrete values of equilibrium moisture content allowed constructing adsorption and desorption isotherms. The three-parameter Guggenheim, Anderson, and De Boer (GAB) model, the four-parameter Generalized D'Arcy and Watt (GDW), and Yanniotis and Blahovec (Y-B) sorption isotherm models were used to quantify the hygroscopic properties for all options of untreated and modified paper samples. The effectiveness of silanes for improving hygroscopic properties was determined and compared to their impact on hydrophobicity of the studied materials. It was found that 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane was the only silane improving hydrophobic and hygroscopic properties. The analysis of the applied models of sorption isotherms depicted that the GAB model was not valid for describing water sorption isotherms in the case of the tested materials, while the GDW and Y-B models provided a much more realistic description of water sorption mechanisms. The development of paper-based analytical platforms has brought a requirement on easily creating patterned paper sensors. This article describes a facile method of fabricating patterned paper sensors using a combination of wettability-controlled paper and the precipitation assays between analytes and sensing elements. Different from common fabrication processes in which patterned channels are defined by creating hydrophobic barriers, herein the direct deposition of the patterns of sensing elements onto paper is performed by simple writing and stamping. Without hydrophobic treatment, the patterned sensing components can remain in place on the paper substrate whose wettability is tuned via bovine serum albumin (BSA) modification. After exposure to the analytes, the precipitates of sensing reactions are not delocalized, giving a simple and successful patterned signal readout. The results of typical colorimetric assays show that slow capillary flow and insoluble products together on paper provide an extremely easy route for fabricating multifunctional patterned paper sensors. Paper dusting, which occurs when a tissue web releases unbound and loosely bound fibers or filler particles during tissue-making or product manufacturing, has an overall negative impact, causing safety hazards, machine runnability difficulties, and product quality issues. To date, there are no well-established industry standards to quantify dusting/linting propensities in finished tissue products, thus evaluating the effectiveness of dust/lint control programs is challenging yet intriguing. This research aims to fill this gap by developing a methodology to characterize dusting in tissue papers. We have developed a device prototype (named the Tissue Dust Collector) and a methodology that together have been named the Tissue Dust Analysis System (TDAS), which aims at quantifying the propensity for tissue-grade paper products to generate dust/lint in a controlled and reproducible manner. Two samples, corresponding to commercial products with a low and high linting propensity, were tested using the proposed device and methodology, and the released particles were quantified and characterized. The device and methodology provided reproducible results for simulated consumer handling and product manufacturing scenarios. By changing the instrument's motor frequency, the force of agitation changes, mimicking/simulating consumer (60 strokes per min, spm) and producer/manufacturing (180 spm) handling scenarios (though manufacturing processes are much faster in practice). Particle counts at each level for each product showed reproducible values differentiable at different agitation levels. Adopting the proposed Tissue Dust Analysis System may help to characterize and understand the mechanisms behind dusting to create dust-control strategies that can alleviate this issue at its various sources or simply allow tissue paper manufacturers to compare and advertise their products based on dusting propensity. Recycled paper pulping wastewater (RPPW) will cause serious environmental problems due to the high loads of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and toxic components. In the present work, the degradation of DOM in the biologically treated RPPWs (cardboard wastewater (CW) and corrugated container wastewater (CCW)) by a combined coagulation and ozonation process was investigated. The optimal chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of CW reached 73.64% at aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) dosage of 800 mg/l, aeration aperture of 10 μm, pH of 9, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) dosage of 100 mg/l, and reaction time of 70 min. The optimal COD removal of CCW reached 55.76% at a poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) dosage of 700 mg/l, H2O2 dosage of 140 mg/l, and reaction time of 50 min. This study provided some insights into the change of DOM during the combined treatment through the use of UV–Vis spectroscopy and excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEM). PAC and Al2(SO4)3 removed high molecular weight organic such as lignin and lignin-derived compounds to improve the biodegradability of the wastewater. Ozone oxidized high molecular weight organic with complex functional groups to low molecular weight organic with simple functional groups and even mineralization, and this phenomenon resulted in the COD of ozonation effluent significantly reduced. China's pulp and paper industry (CPPI) has been always the main carbon emission source in recent years. However, the analysis on influencing factors of carbon emissions from this industry is insufficient. To address the issue, the CO2 emissions from CPPI are estimated in the period of 2005–2019, the driving factors of CO2 emissions are investigated by the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method, the decoupling state of economic growth and CO2 emissions is determined by Tapio decoupling model, and finally, future CO2 emissions are predicted under four scenarios by the STIRPAT model to explore the potential of carbon peaking. The results show that CPPI exhibits a rapid increase and a fluctuating downward trend in CO2 emissions during the period of 2005–2013 and 2014–2019, respectively. The main promoting and inhibiting factors to the increase of CO2 emission are per capita industrial output value and energy intensity, respectively. There are five decoupling states of CO2 emissions and economic growth during the study period, and the CO2 emissions exhibit a weak decoupling state with the industrial output value growth in most years of the study period. It is very difficult to realize the carbon peaking goal by 2030 under the baseline and fast development scenarios. Therefore, efficient low carbon and strong low-carbon development policies are necessary and urgent for the realization of carbon peaking goal and the sustainable development of CPPI. Pencil drawing is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways of fabricating miniaturized electrodes on a paper substrate. However, it is limited by the lack of reproducibility regarding the electrode drawing process. A 3D-printed pencil holder (3DPH) is proposed here for simple, reproducible, and low-cost hand-drawn fabrication of paper-based electrochemical devices. 3DPH was designed to keep pressure and angulation of the graphite mine constant on the paper substrate using a micromechanical pencil regardless of the user/operator. This approach significantly improved the reproducibility and cost of making reliable pencil-drawn electrodes. The results showed high reproducibility and accuracy of the 3DPH-assisted electrodes prepared by 4 different operators in terms of sheet resistance and electrochemical behavior. Cyclic voltammetric (CV) curves in the presence of [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− redox probe showed only 3.9% variation for the anodic peak currents of different electrodes prepared by different operators when compared with electrodes prepared without the 3D-printed support. SEM analyses revealed a more uniform graphite deposition/design of the electrodes prepared with 3DPH, which corroborates the results obtained by CV. As a proof of concept, 3DPH-assisted pencil-drawn graphite electrodes were employed for dopamine detection in synthetic saliva, showing a proportional increase in anodic peak current at 0.12 V vs. carbon pRE with increasing dopamine (DA) concentration, with a detection limit of 0.39μmol L−1. Moreover recovery was in the range 93–104% of DA (4–7% RSD) in synthetic saliva for three different concentrations, demonstrating the reliability of the approach. Finally, we believe this approach can make pencil-drawn technology more robust, accessible, reliable, and inexpensive for real on-site applications, especially in hard-to-reach locations or research centers with little investment. In this work, a disposable sensor array was designed based on the chemi-resistive behavior of the conducting polymers to detect three volatile organic compounds (VOCs), i.e., acetone, ethanol, and methanol in air and breath. Four disposable resistive sensors were designed by coating polypyrrole and polyaniline (in their doped and de-doped forms) on filter paper substrates and tested against VOCs in air. Change in conductivity of the polymer resulting from exposure to various VOC concentration was measured as percentage resistance change using a standard multimeter. The lowest concentration detected for acetone, ethanol, and methanol vapors was 400 ppb, 150 ppb, and 300 ppb, respectively within 2 min. These VOC-responsive sensors, housed in an indigenous inert chamber, showed good stability, repeatability, and reversibility while sensing, thus making it suitable for environmental pollutant detection at room temperature. Furthermore, the non-specific nature of these easy to fabricate sensors towards all VOCs is considered favorable and upon classifying with principal component analysis (PCA), the gases were qualitatively distinguished in separate clusters. Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera), as a new woody forage with high-protein characteristic, is being widely used in ruminant feeding. However, little is known about the comprehensive microbiota picture of whole ruminal niches (liquid, solid, and epithelium) under paper mulberry diet. To gain a better understanding of feeding paper mulberry on the rumen microbiota, the effects of fresh paper mulberry, paper mulberry silage, or a conventional high-protein alfalfa silage on rumen fermentation products and microbiota in rumen niches of Hu lambs were studied. Forty-five Hu lambs were randomly divided into 3 treatments with 15 replicates in each treatment. No significant difference was observed among treatments in the average daily gain (ADG). The fresh paper mulberry treatment had lower (P < 0.05) pH and higher (P < 0.05) total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) compared with silage treatments, but the fermentation parameters did not show significant differences between paper mulberry silage and alfalfa silage treatments. The Shannon index did not show a significant difference (P < 0.05) among treatments except between fresh paper mulberry and alfalfa silage treatment in rumen epithelial niches. Butyrivibrio and Treponema were the predominant genera in the rumen epithelial fraction, while Prevotella and Rikenellaceae_RC9 dominated in both rumen liquid and solid fractions. These results indicated the paper mulberry supplement did not have distinct impact on the microbial diversity and growth performance compared with alfalfa silage, especially for paper mulberry silage, which might help us develop an alternative animal feeding strategy of replacing alfalfa with paper mulberry. A new rhodamine B derivative (RDB) was synthesized and utilized for the colorimetric detection of copper ions (Cu2+). This chemosensor utilized a paper strip as a support and a smartphone as a detector for on-site quantitative detection of Cu2+ in water samples. Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) were investigated as the modifier nanoparticles to achieve uniform color on the paper strip and showed a color response 1.9-fold higher than the one without SiNPs. The RDB chemosensor-based paper strip provided high selectivity toward Cu2+ with a detection limit of 0.7 mg/L, and the working concentrations for Cu2+ ranged from 1 to 17 mg/L. Parallel analyses of eight drinking water samples were conducted by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The results were in good agreement, indicating the practical reliability of the established method with a short assay time and high selectivity. Toilet paper has been reported as one of the major insoluble pollutant components in the influent of wastewater treatment plants. Toilet paper fibers contribute to a large production of sewage sludge, resulting in a high treatment cost and high energy consumption. To find energy-efficient, cost-effective, and environment-friendly technologies for fiber removal and resource recovery from wastewater, a life-cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to analyze the wastewater treatment processes, including a sieving process for removing and recovering suspended solids before the biodegradation units. Based on the LCA results, it was estimated that the sieve screening process saved 8.57% of energy consumption. The construction phase of sieving consumed 1.31% energy cost compared with the operation phase. Environmental impact analysis showed that sieving reduced the impacts of climate change, human toxicity, fossil depletion, and particulate matter formation, which reduced the total normalized environmental impacts by 9.46%. Paper coating plays an important role in the paper properties, printability and application. The nanocoating is a multifunction layer that provides the paper with unique features. In this work, nanocoating formulas were prepared using a green method and component. The nanocoating formulas were based on biopolymers nanostarch NSt and nanochitosan NCh (NCS) decorated with Egyptian kaolinite Ka doped with zinc nanoparticles NCS@xka/ZnONPs (x represents different ratios) support for multifunctional uses. The nanocoating formulas were characterized using a physiochemical analysis as well as a topographical study. FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM techniques were used. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of the tested samples was assessed against six microorganisms including Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The prepared nanocoating formulas affirmed excellent antimicrobial activity as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial active agent with excellent activity against all representative microbial communities. The nanocoating with the highest ratio of Ka/ZnONPs (NCS@40 ka/ZnONPs) showed excellent antimicrobial activity with an inhibition percentage of more than 70% versus all microorganisms presented. The paper was coated with the prepared suspensions and characterized concerning optical, mechanical and physical properties. When Ka/ZnONPs were loaded into NCS in a variety of ratios, the characteristics of coated paper were enhanced compared to blank paper. The sample NCS@40 ka/ZnONPs increased tensile strength by 11%, reduced light scattering by 12%, and improved brightness and whiteness by 1%. Paper coated with NCh suspension had 35.32% less roughness and 188.6% less porosity. When coated with the sample NCS@10 ka/ZnONPs, the coated paper's porosity was reduced by 94% and its roughness was reduced by 10.85%. To reduce the fire risk of air filter paper, a reactive ammonium phosphite flame retardant was synthesized and applied to the flame-retarding treatment of air filter paper. It was found that ammonium phosphite reacted with cellulose existing in filter paper fibers to form P–O–C bonds and remarkably improved the flame-retarding properties and thermal stability of the air filter paper. After modification of the air filter paper with 30 wt% of ammonium phosphite, its limiting oxygen index value reached 39.5%, which remained at 29.6% after 4 h of the dipping test. The heat release rate and total heat release rate of the treated air filter paper decreased significantly, and the carbon residual amounts at 700 °C in the nitrogen atmosphere and in air reached 43.96% and 16.35%, respectively. During thermal decomposition, ammonium phosphite played a flame-retarding role in both condensed and gas phases. Moreover, ammonium phosphite, as a flame retardant, had no obvious influence on the physical properties and filtration performance of the air filter paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between digital urine color and paper urine color with other urine indices to assess hydration status. Methods: Twelve male subjects (mean ± standard deviation; age, 26 ± 8 years; body mass, 57.8 ± 5.3 kg; height, 177.5 ± 8.9 cm; VO2max, 57.8 ± 5.8 ml·kg−1·min−1) performed four exercise trials in the heat. Before and following exercise trials, subjects provide urine samples. Urine samples were measured using a digital urine color chart on a portable device screen. Urine samples were also assessed with urine specific gravity (USG), urine osmolality (UOsmo), and a validated paper urine color chart. Results: There were extremely large associations found between digital urine color and paper urine color (r = 0.926, p < 0.001). Correlation coefficients showing associations with USG and UOsmo were similar between digital urine color (USG, r = 0.695, p < 0.001; UOsmo, r = 0.555, p < 0.001) and paper urine color (USG, r = 0.713, p < 0.001; UOsmo, r = 0.570, p < 0.001). Bland–Altman analysis indicated that no proportional bias was observed between digital and paper urine colors (bias, − 0.148; SD of bias, 0.492; 95% LOA, − 1.11, 0.817; p = 0.094). Conclusions: Strong associations were found between digital and paper urine colors with no proportional bias. Furthermore, the degree of associations with USG and UOsmo was similar between digital and paper urine color. Global sustainability megatrends are promoting the utilization of sustainably perceived fibers such as recycled and agricultural residue fibers in hygiene tissue applications. Tissue paper products advertised as sustainable have higher prices and inferior performance than conventional products manufactured from virgin wood fibers. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using agricultural residues from fique plantations (Furcraea microphylla genus) as an alternative to Northern Bleached Softwood Fibers (NBSK) in high-performance hygiene tissue applications. For our study, fiber residues were mechanically cleaned and upgraded to a tissue pulp using a simple pulping and bleaching process. A complete characterization of tissue paper properties (bulk, softness, water absorbency, tensile strength) was performed and compared against the NBSK market pulp. Additionally, fique residue pulp was blended with Bleached Eucalyptus Kraft (BEK) to match the performance of a selected benchmark consisting of 70% BEK and 30% NBSK. Results indicate fique residue bleached pulp has similar fiber morphology and comparable strength properties in terms of the tensile strength (+ 6%) and tear strength (+ 10%), but superior bulk (+ 12%), water absorbency (+ 28%), and softness (−29% TS7 values) than NBSK pulp. A fiber blend of 70% BEK and 30% fique residue showed superior tensile strength (+ 21%), tear strength (+ 54%), bulk (+ 5.5%), water absorbency (+ 1.5%), and softness (−8.7% TS7 values) over a similar fiber blend of BEK and NBSK. Our findings demonstrate that fibers from fique residue can substitute NBSK in hygiene tissue applications. Upgrading residues from fique fibers as raw materials for the tissue industry can bridge the gap between sustainability and product performance, simultaneously opening the possibility of new revenue streams for millions of small farmers in the producing countries. Environmental-friendly and high-performance biopolymer-based dielectrics have attracted great attention in light weight and flexible electronics. In this work, the biodegradable TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs) were mixed with inorganic mica platelets through vacuum-assisted filtration and subsequent hot-pressing method. It was found that mica platelets could be well aligned within TOCN matrix to form a nacre-like multilayer structure due to good compatibility and hydrogen bonding interaction between mica and TOCNs. The TOCN/mica composite paper shows good flexibility, high mechanical strength (9.8 MPa) and enhanced dielectric breakdown strength (17.85 kV/mm). TOCN/mica papers were further dip-treated by epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and cured at 170 °C for 2 h. The ESO-treated composite papers show greatly enhanced breakdown strength and reach as high as 175.65 kV/mm for TN-M50/ESO sample.
