- Abstract
Owing to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and specifically in machine learning, information technology (IT) systems can support humans in an increasing number of tasks. Yet, previous research indicates that people often prefer human support to support by an IT system, even if the latter provides superior performance – a phenomenon called algorithm aversion. A possible cause of algorithm aversion put forward in literature is that users lose trust in IT systems they become familiar with and perceive to err, for example, making forecasts that turn out to deviate from the actual value. Therefore, this paper evaluates the effectiveness of demonstrating an AI-based system’s ability to learn as a potential countermeasure against algorithm aversion in an incentive-compatible online experiment. The experiment reveals how the nature of an erring advisor (i.e., human vs. algorithmic), its familiarity to the user (i.e., unfamiliar vs. familiar), and its ability to learn (i.e., non-learning vs. learning) influence a decision maker’s reliance on the advisor’s judgement for an objective and non-personal decision task. The results reveal no difference in the reliance on unfamiliar human and algorithmic advisors, but differences in the reliance on familiar human and algorithmic advisors that err. Demonstrating an advisor’s ability to learn, however, offsets the effect of familiarity. Therefore, this study contributes to an enhanced understanding of algorithm aversion and is one of the first to examine how users perceive whether an IT system is able to learn. The findings provide theoretical and practical implications for the employment and design of AI-based systems.

- Abstract
Process mining is an active research domain and has been applied to understand and improve business processes. While significant research has been conducted on the development and improvement of algorithms, evidence on the application of process mining in organizations has been far more limited. In particular, there is limited understanding of the opportunities and challenges of using process mining in organizations. Such an understanding has the potential to guide research by highlighting barriers for process mining adoption and, thus, can contribute to successful process mining initiatives in practice. In this respect, the paper provides a holistic view of opportunities and challenges for process mining in organizations identified in a Delphi study with 40 international experts from academia and industry. Besides proposing a set of 30 opportunities and 32 challenges, the paper conveys insights into the comparative relevance of individual items, as well as differences in the perceived relevance between academics and practitioners. Therefore, the study contributes to the future development of process mining, both as a research field and regarding its application in organizations.

- Abstract
The management and improvement of business processes are a core topic of the information systems discipline. The persistent demand in corporations within all industry sectors for increased operational efficiency and innovation, an emerging set of established and evaluated methods, tools, and techniques as well as the quickly growing body of academic and professional knowledge are indicative for the standing that Business Process Management (BPM) has nowadays. During the last decades, intensive research has been conducted with respect to the design, implementation, execution, and monitoring of business processes. Comparatively low attention, however, has been paid to questions related to organizational issues such as the adoption, usage, implications, and overall success of BPM approaches, technologies, and initiatives. This research gap motivated us to edit a corresponding special focus issue for the journal BISE/WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK. We are happy that we are able to present a selection of three research papers and a state-of-the-art paper in the scientific section of the issue at hand. As these papers differ in the topics they investigate, the research method they apply, and the theoretical foundations they build on, the diversity within the BPM field becomes evident. The academic papers are complemented by an interview with Phil Gilbert, IBM’s Vice President for Business Process and Decision Management, who reflects on the relationship between business processes and the data flowing through them, the need to establish a process context for decision making, and the calibration of BPM efforts toward executives who see processes as a means to an end, rather than a first-order concept in its own right.

- Abstract
In four empirical studies, this cumulative work provides valuable insights for marketing executives of statutory health insurance funds and social media responsible. Paper I and II provide evidence about the importance and interplay of price and corporate reputation on the market of statutory health insurance. The second part changes perspective to corporate communication issues in the social media environment. By introducing the “social media brand value chain” paper III conducts a literature review of state of the art social media research. By means of a field experiment on Facebook, paper IV shows that brands do not necessarily have to communicate via their brand fan pages in a highly interactive and vivid way to positively influence attitudinal measures among their fan base.

- Abstract
As the public sector in Germany will likely increasingly face staffing problems in the coming years, this book approaches the topic of employer attractiveness within the German public sector from an internal perspective, focusing on current employees'turnover intentions. Using secondary survey data, ordinal logistic regression models are built to explore the influence of the social environment at the workplace, measured by the perception of a participative safety climate, in this context. Therefore, this paper takes its theoretical departure in value research, arguing that values serve as an underlying mechanism that informs behavioral intent and ultimately behavior. Drawing on a concept that has long floated at the periphery of turnover research, this project is largely exploratory in nature, but suggests that a social climate at work that is characterized by trust and support has a negative impact on turnover intentions in the German public sector. Age and employment status are found to not alter the effect, but it is likely mediated by job satisfaction.

- Abstract
With the Brexit referendum more than 50% of the British population voted in favour of the UK leaving the EU. Since that event, much speculation has been about Brexit impact on the global economy, also affecting the insurance market. Existing papers and literature indicate potential significant Brexit implications on the structure of the European insurance market due to the loss of the European Passport, the European Solvency II supervisory regime, as well as on stock prices of insurance companies based in the EU and UK, but so far there is no holistic view on this topic. The dissertation aims to bring together the fragmentary information on Brexit implications for the European insurance market, develop methodological approaches further, conduct new analyses, and reflect a holistic picture of the impact of Brexit on the European insurance market, focusing on the structure of the European insurance market, stock market reactions and the Solvency II supervisory regime.

- Abstract
The business problem of having inefficient processes, imprecise process analyses and simulations as well as non-transparent artificial neuronal network models can be overcome by an easy-to-use modeling concept. With the aim of developing a flexible and efficient approach to modeling, simulating and optimizing processes, this paper proposes a flexible Concept of Neuronal Modeling (CoNM). The modeling concept, which is described by the modeling language designed and its mathematical formulation and is connected to a technical substantiation, is based on a collection of novel sub-artifacts. As these have been implemented as a computational model, the set of CoNM tools carries out novel kinds of Neuronal Process Modeling (NPM), Neuronal Process Simulations (NPS) and Neuronal Process Optimizations (NPO). The efficacy of the designed artifacts was demonstrated rigorously by means of six experiments and a simulator of real industrial production processes.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Investment advisory services of financial service providers (FSPs) exhibit several characteristics that are detrimental to advisory quality. The interaction of advisor and client is strained by a lack of transparency regarding the advisory process (what activities are performed and why) and the information used therein (what information is used for what purpose and with what effect), as well as regarding the precise costs of the service and the recommended products. In prior research, we suggested that process and information transparency issues may be appropriately addressed with collaborative information technology (IT) artifacts. In this paper, we argue that collaborative, transparent artifacts may also be a premise of enabling cost transparency. To this end, we describe a complete research cycle of designing, implementing and evaluating a shared cost-transparent IT artifact to support client-advisor interaction in investment advisory encounters. Evaluation results suggest the efficacy of our design in improving the clients’ perceived cost transparency as well as increase their satisfaction and their willingness to pay for the received investment advice. These findings may also challenge the common belief of FSPs that transparent, fee-based advisory services would neither be accepted by clients nor be economically viable. Practical implications of these findings for designing advisory encounters with supportive IT are discussed.

- Abstract
The concept ambient intelligence was first introduced more than ten years ago by the EU Information Society Technologies Advisory Group (ISTAG 1999). The result was a visionary description of a technological development in which information and communication systems are embedded in the user environment and enable numerous ways of individual support from the background. Until now, the term has played a secondary role in the German-speaking research community of business and information systems engineering (BISE). Instead, synonymous terms like pervasive computing or ubiquitous computing have been used (cf. e.g. Mattern 2001). The journal it – Information Technology was the first to dedicate an exclusive issue to the topic in a special issue (n.a. 2008). Moreover, some papers in the context of sub conferences as part of the Multi-Conference on Information Systems (MKWI) dealt with and identified ambient intelligence. Furthermore, the use of the concept, which has become known as “Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)”, is presently on the increase. One possible explanation for the more frequent use is the link with various AAL-related initiatives and their respective funding programs at both the federal and the EU level.

- Abstract
The present book project on Research Design, which is planned in English, is intended to create an innovative textbook that can be used at university undergraduate and graduate levels in internationally oriented education in the German-speaking countries. This textbook shall provide comprehensive guidance for students when tackling their (applied) research papers. Instead of reiterating qualitative and quantitative methods it focuses on how to come up with an appropriate research design that allows the student to make the intended intellectual contribution. Starting from the desired (hypothetical) conclusion or statement the student will be guided through the process of finding the appropriate Research Question that will be answered by such a statement and the required Research Design consisting of data collection and data analysis, that allows for such a statement as the conclusion of the study. Common Research Designs in Business and Management, i.e. well beyond the standard ResearchDesigns of Social Sciences and curtailed to the focus area, will be described with regard to their suitability to answer specific kinds of questions as well as the idiosyncrasies of the these Designs and their impact on the written research reports. Examples for each Research Design will be provided as well as guidance about how to write about such research.

- Abstract
Data warehouse projects, today, are in an ambivalent situation. On the one hand, data warehouses are critical for a company’s success and various methodological and technological tools are sophisticatedly developed to implement them. On the other hand, a significant amount of data warehouse projects fails due to non-technical reasons such as insufficient management support or in-corporative employees. But management support and user participation can be increased dramatically with specification methods that are understandable to these user groups. This paper aims at overcoming possible non-technical failure reasons by introducing a user-adequate specification approach within the field of management information systems.

“Criticism of capitalism“ – is it really politically fair and theoretically sound to address important politico-economic issues of our time by use of a terminology that still stems from the times of the Cold War? Money is the other topic. “Toward gold throng all, To gold cling all, Yes, all!” In times of money, which is intrinsically worthless and may therefore be provided in arbitrary amounts by a society, is it really adequate that we still (like Goethe did for gold) regard these petty paper slips as the scarcest resource of them all? In this book, Kaiser provides the reader with surprisingly new insights into the fascinating phenomena of capital and money.

- Abstract
Revenue Management has proven successful in a number of service industries. Starting out in the airlines industry in the 1970s, Revenue Management spread to tourism sectors such as hotels and cruise ships, but also to TV advertising and other industries. Revenue Management for the manufacturing sector is a relatively new concept which is explored in this book.In order to test if there is a potential for Revenue Management in the manufacturing sector, a survey was conducted and sent to a large number of manufacturing companies in the paper, steel and aluminium industries. The results show that Revenue Management is already partly implemented in these industries, but has further greater potential for bottom line improvement in these industries. The book continues with a number of mathematical decision models and heuristics for several application scenarios. The numerical results of the models indicate that manufacturing companies should seriously consider thinking about implementing a Revenue Management system in order to enhance profits significantly.

- Abstract
This paper provides a guideline for how the entire process chain of automotive after-sales services could be researched in China. In addition, Schwartz's individual level value theory is introduced as a beneficial operationalisation approach to cultural marketing. So, values are modelled as exogenous variables in order to show which ones are really causal. A total of 301 Chinese workshop customers were surveyed to assess the critical success factors of after-sales services via partial least squares structural equation modelling. After-sales services have become very important in the automobile industry. However, this area has not been sufficiently researched, particularly with regard to China, the most important car market globally.

- Abstract
Currently, a new potential paragon of fundraising and financing, in particular crowd funding (CF) attracts a lot of attention. Basically, CF is an open call for capital, mainly via the internet, where the desired campaign can be evaluated and financially supported by a large group of individuals, the crowd. The matchmaking process between campaign creators and potential investors is mainly established by a standardized CF platform (CFP). Scientific discourse on CF is still nascent, since existing studies and papers focus on the potential of CF and its basic principles. Florian Danmayr addresses crowd funding platforms as object of his analysis and contributes to the body of literature by enhancing knowledge on the composition of the CFP market.

Information Systems - Abstract
IoT-enhanced Business Processes make use of sensors and actuators to carry out the process tasks and achieve a specific goal. One of the most important difficulties in the development of IoT-enhanced BPs is the interdisciplinarity that is demanded by this type of project. Defining an interdisciplinary tool-supported development approach that facilitates the collaboration of different professionals, with a special focus on three main facets: business process requirements, interoperability between IoT devices and BPs, and low-level data processing. The study followed a Design Science Research methodology for information systems that consists of a 6-step process: (1) problem identification and motivation; (2) define the objectives for a solution; (3) design and development; (4) demonstration; (5) evaluation; and (6) communication. The paper presents an interdisciplinary development process to support the creation of IoT-enhanced BPs by applying the Separation of Concerns principle. A collaborative development environment is built to provide each professional with the tools required to accomplish her/his development responsibilities. The approach is successfully validated through a case-study evaluation. The evaluation allows to conclude that the proposed development process and the supporting development environment are effective to face the interdisciplinary nature of IoT-enhanced BPs.

Business process management (BPM) drives corporate success through effective and efficient processes. In recent decades, knowledge has been accumulated regarding the identification, discovery, analysis, design, implementation, and monitoring of business processes. This includes methods and tools for tackling various kinds of process change such as continuous process improvement, process reengineering, process innovation, and process drift. However, exogenous shocks, which lead to unintentional and radical process change, have been neglected in BPM research although they severely affect an organization’s context, strategy, and business processes. This research note conceptualizes the interplay of exogenous shocks and BPM in terms of the effects that such shocks can have on organizations’ overall process performance over time. On this foundation, related challenges and opportunities for BPM via several rounds of idea generation and consolidation within a diverse team of BPM scholars are identified. The paper discusses findings in light of extant literature from BPM and related disciplines, as well as present avenues for future (BPM) research to invigorate the academic discourse on the topic.

35. The framing of gambling and the commercial determinants of harm: challenges for regulation in the UK

- Abstract
This article argues that the framing of gambling is crucial for how it is dealt with at every level; from legislative, regulatory and commercial practice to the terms of media and civic debate. Whoever frames the debate has power over the ways that we can and cannot think about gambling, as well as what we can do about it.We take the example of Britain as a case study in which, despite recent repeated calls for gambling to be regarded as a public health issue, it continues to be framed primarily in terms of economic activity and consumerism. We argue that this framing is the product of a particular political-economic model and that it is embedded in legislation and regulatory practice. We go on to describe the commercial landscape of gambling that has been produced by this framework as one which produces harm. As such, we make the point that framing is a key component of the commercial determinants of harm in gambling. The final section of our paper considers the various forms of political and commercial influence that infiltrate and shape the framing of gambling in Britain. This work was funded by Wellcome Trust through a Humanities and Social Sciences Fellowship to Heather Wardle (grant number: 200306).

- Abstract

- Abstract
Considering decreasing birth rates and increasing rates of life expectancy, the workforce is rapidly aging – resulting in a more age-diverse labor market. So far, research in IWO-psychology has not fully addressed age-related constructs and issues of new work with longitudinal methods representing changes over time more adequately. To enhance predictions for a rapidly aging workforce, this research focuses on the influence of the potentials of actively aging individuals on frequently cited attitudes and behaviors over the working life span. The results suggest that a more differentiated view of age is partially effective in reducing the probability of turnover intention among IT-employees over time, the age-entrepreneurship relation can be clarified by focusing on the inconsistencies of age and the dimensions of human capital partly contribute to engaging in postretirement work. The outcomes have implications regarding the temporality of aging, entrepreneurial generational identity, calling to work and residuals about postretirement work. Qualitative follow-up research addressing the reasons for turnover intention and work activities retirees experienced as calling seems promising.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Organizations of all kinds create a sense of purpose and sometimes incomparable performance that individuals cannot achieve alone. This textbook examines the developments and changes that organizations should make in order to be successful in today's complex organizational environment. The authors explain various models and concepts of organizational design, highlight the important role played by agile management and self-organization and reflect on the consequences these concepts have for practical organizational work. The necessary organizational development can only be meaningfully and successfully implemented with consideration of the existing corporate culture and knowledge of the fundamentals of knowledge management, so these are also taught in the textbook. The overarching goal of organizational design is to promote the organization's resilience to crises. After laying the foundations for this, the penultimate chapter is dedicated to the aspect of resilience, followed by an outlook for the future. The didactic structure of the textbook includes learning objectives, practical examples and case studies as well as learning comprehension questions and the opportunity to test your own knowledge with the Springer Nature Flashcards. This textbook has been recommended and developed for university courses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
