Population genomics has revolutionized several disciplines of biology, genetic resource conservation and management, and breeding of crop plants by providing key and novel insights into population, evolutionary, ecological and conservation genetics, ecology, evolution and adaptation, and facilitating molecular breeding with an unprecedented power and accuracy. Crop plants have been domesticated from their wild progenitors over several centuries and have undergone severe genetic bottlenecks and selection sweeps. Population genomics research has unraveled novel insights into crop plants origin, evolution, demographic history, center of diversity, domestication history, genetic/genomic diversity and genetic structure of wild and domesticated populations and species, epigenomic diversity, genetic/genomic basis of domestication syndrome, genomic footprints of domestication, selection and breeding, de-domestication, speciation and admixture, taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and ecological and climate adaptation. This book discusses the natural classification and biosystematics of Triticeae and presents the most significant findings of comprehensive studies on the Triticeae, an important tribe in the grass family (Poaceae) that includes major crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and triticale, as well as various forage crops found in different genera. The five-volume Chinese version of Biosystematics of Triticeae was published in 1998, 2004, 2006, 2011, and 2013, and included the 30 genera, two subgenera, 464 species, nine subspecies, and 186 varieties of Triticeae identified to date. This is their English edition. The book is divided into five volumes, covering a wide range of disciplines from traditional taxonomy and cytogenetics to molecular phylogeny. Volume I, Triticum-Aegilops complex focuses on the taxonomy and generic relationships of Triticum and Aegilops, discussing the origin of common wheat as a crop. Volume II, Genera: Secale, Tritiosecale, Pseudosecale, Eremopyrum, Henrardia, Taeniantherum, Heteranthelium, Crithopsis, and Hordeum highlights a number of genera that are closely related based on their morphological classification and that contain only one unique genome. Medicinal and aromatic crops (MACs) are high-value crops since the natural products obtained from them are low-volume high-value commodities that have numerous applications in various sectors such as the food, beverage, food supplement, flavor and fragrance, perfumery and cosmetics, pharmaceutical and aromatherapy industries. In addition, the plant biomass is used in the production of teas and medical applications in traditional and also modern medicines. MACs are important mainly because they contain plant secondary metabolites such as essential oils, alkaloids, glygosides, saponins, tannins, vitamins and other bioactives. Plant tissue culture (PTC) technology has gained unassailable success for its various commercial and research applications in plant sciences. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are an essential part of any plant tissue culture intervention for propagation or modification of plants. A wide range of PGRs are available, including aromatic compounds that show cytokinin activities, promote cell division and micro-propagation, viz. kinetin, N6-benzyladenine and topolins. This book is the first of its kind to highlight the positive impact of natural UV radiation on plants through unique adaptations in various metabolic pathways, and provides an evolutionary sketch of the development of molecular mechanisms for protecting plants from solar UV ever since their migration to terrestrial habitats. Experimental evidence is provided for establishing how plants, through their stationary habit in the open field, survive and flourish by developing suitable UV acclimation strategies through the repair of damaged macromolecules and/or upregulation of screening compounds viz. flavonoids. Presenting an analysis of related literature, it also highlights the importance of outdoor experiments over those in closed chamber under artificial UV light for obtaining realistic data. The book presents a comprehensive account of the stratospheric ozone layer, its formation and seasonal thinning, with particular reference to alarming anthropogenic destruction of the ozone layer since the last quarter of the twentieth century, which has resulted in increased UV fluence on Earth. It discusses variations in the hazardous impact of UV on life at different latitudes through the ages, and examines altitudinal variations in UV effects in case studies demonstrating high antioxidant content and aroma status in Darjeeling tea leaves (at high altitudes) compared with those of the same tea clones in Assam leaves (at low altitudes), with both sites being at the same latitude. It provides evidence which suggests that the UV effects relating to the expression of seed vigour-viability could be epigenetic.Further, it presents recently developed microscopic technologies for demonstrating the penetration of UV into plant cells, and discusses how cellular metabolism can be affected either directly or via signal transduction. Effect of damage in DNA (the key target of UV radiation) has been demonstrated and estimated using precise techniques. The latest “FOX Hunting” technique as a useful means of transcriptome analysis that may be used for developing UV tolerant plants through Marker Assisted Breeding has also been discussed. Using biochemical and biotechnological methods, the experiments presented highlight the gene X environment based upregulation of specific metabolic pathways, allowing i) value addition in plant-derived food, and ii) paving the way for the industrial manufacture of Alternative Medicine products. Grasses dominate many natural ecosystems and produce the bulk calories consumed by humans either directly in the form of grains or indirectly through forage/grain fed animals. In addition, grasses grown as biomass crops are poised to become a significant source of renewable energy. Despite their economic and environmental importance, research into the unique aspects of grass biology has been hampered by the lack of a truly tractable experimental model system. Over that past decade, the small, annual grass Brachypodium distachyon has emerged as a viable model system for the grasses. This book describes the development of extensive experimental resources (e.g. whole genome sequence, efficient transformation methods, insertional mutant collections, large germplasm collections, recombinant inbred lines, resequenced genomes) that have led many laboratories around the world to adopt B. distachyon as a model system. Simultaneously, crop production is affected by many other factors, including industrial pollution, overuse of fertilizers and insecticides, heavy metal and radiation stresses etc. It has been noted that many pests are becoming resistant to insecticides. Estimates vary, but around 25% of crops can be lost to pests and diseases. Climate change associated with agriculture is also a global issue. Agriculture is a significant contributor to greenhouse gases and is estimated to account for 10-12% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Many of the issues highlighted are global problems and are addressed thoroughly in this work.
