This book consists of invited reviews on Galactic Bulges written by experts in the field. A central point of the book is that, while in the standard picture of galaxy formation a significant amount of the baryonic mass is expected to reside in classical bulges, the question what is the fraction of galaxies with no classical bulges in the local Universe has remained open. The most spectacular example of a galaxy with no significant classical bulge is the Milky Way. The reviews of this book attempt to clarify the role of the various types of bulges during the mass build-up of galaxies, based on morphology, kinematics and stellar populations and connecting their properties at low and high redshifts. The observed properties are compared with the predictions of the theoretical models, accounting for the many physical processes leading to the central mass concentration and their destruction in galaxies. This book serves as an entry point for PhD students and non-specialists and as a reference work for researchers in the field.

Quasars, and the menagerie of other galaxies with'unusual nuclei', now collectively known as Active Galactic Nuclei or AGN, have, in one form or another, sparked the interest of astronomers for over 60 years. The only known mechanism that can explain the staggering amounts of energy emitted by the innermost regions of these systems is gravitational energy release by matter falling towards a supermassive black hole --- a black hole whose mass is millions to billions of times the mass of our Sun. AGN emit radiation at all wavelengths. X-rays originating at a distance of a few times the event horizon of the black hole are the emissions closest to the black hole that we can detect; thus, X-rays directly reveal the presence of active supermassive black holes. Oftentimes, however, the supermassive black holes that lie at the centers of AGN are cocooned in gas and dust that absorb the emitted low­ energy X-rays and the optical and ultraviolet light, hiding the black hole from view at these wavelengths. Until recently, this low-energy absorption presented a major obstacle in observational efforts to map the accretion history of the universe. In 1999 and 2000, the launches of the Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray Observatories finally broke the impasse. The impact of these observatories on X-ray astronomy is similar to the impact that the Hubble Space Telescope had on optical astronomy. The astounding new data from these observatories have enabled astronomers to make enormous advances in their understanding of when accretion occurs.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned for operation in about five years, will have the capability to investigate – and answer – some of the most challenging questions in astronomy. Although motivated and designed to study the very early Universe, the performance of the observatory's instruments over a very wide wavelength range will allow the world's scientific community unequaled ability to study cosmic phenomena as diverse as small bodies in the Solar System and the formation of galaxies. As part of preparation to use JWST, a conference was held in Tucson, Arizona in 2007 that brought together astronomers from around the world to discuss the mission, other major facilities that will operate in the coming decade, and major scientific goals for them. This book is a compilation of those presentations by some of the leading researchers from all branches of astronomy. This book also includes a “pre-history” of JWST, describing the lengthy process and some of the key individuals that initiated early work on the concepts that would evolve to become the premier space observatory of the next decade.

The Universe would be a dull and dark place if the gaseous baryons did not cool, collapse, and form stars and galaxies. However, if this gas is allowed to cool unimpeded at the rate predicted from known atomic physics, in the context of a well-established cosmological model, the gaseous matter would form stars and galaxies with a high e?ciency, so that far more than the observed fraction of about 10–15% of the baryonic matter would be found in luminous stellar systems. Therefore,cooling must be damped or regulatedby heating processes, and observations show that this ‘feedback'is a widespread astrophysical phenomenon. The place where this cooling and feedback manifests itself most dram- ically is in the inner regions of the most massive Dark Matter halos found in our Universe, in the cores of galaxy clusters. The e?ect of cosmic co- ing in these objects was recognized in the mid-1970s, and the term ‘cooling?ow'was introduced by Andy Fabian and colleagues at Cambridge as a p- sible explanation of the physical processes obtained in the central regions of clusters. The name refers to the fact that gas cooling in the inner regions is associated with a loss of central pressure, causing an in?ow of hot gas from larger radii.
