- Abstract
This new edition retains its class-tested explanation of the physics of phase transformation and associated constraints from a metallurgical/materials science point of view, and adds an enhanced treatment of the underlying theoretical concepts with greater clarification. The new edition continues its examination of crystallography, mass transport by diffusion, thermodynamics, heat transfer and related temperature gradients, thermal deformation, and even fracture mechanics. The work presented emphasizes solidification and related analytical models based on heat transfer. This corresponds with the most fundamental physical event of continuous evolution of latent heat of fusion for directional or non-directional liquid-to-solid phase transformation at a specific interface with a certain geometrical shape, such as planar or curved front. Dr. Perez introduces mathematical and engineering approximation schemes for describing the phase transformation, mainly during solidification of pure metals and alloys. Giving clear definitions and explanations of theoretical concepts and full detail of derivation of formulae, this interdisciplinary volume is ideal for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in applied science, and professionals in the metal making and surface reconstruction industries.

- Abstract
The second edition of this book provides a completely updated account of the structure, dynamics, and physics of viral particles: from the moment they emerge by self-assembly from viral components produced in the infected cell, through their extracellular stage, until they recognize and infect a new host cell and cease to exist as they lose their physical integrity to initiate a new infectious cycle. New insights into the structure of viruses, their physical properties, and mechanisms of action, derived from results obtained in the last decade, have been included, as well as other (bio)physical techniques to study the structure or dynamics of virus particles and components. These include, among many others, new advances in high-resolution electron cryomicroscopy; novel approaches in the use of electron cryotomography or the application of soft X-ray tomography to study viruses in the infected cell; high-speed atomic force microscopy to study virus assembly and dynamics; and the development of new antiviral drugs and vaccines. as well as of many nanomedical and nanotechnological applications of virus particles. New chapters on the study of viruses inside infected cells and on technological applications of modified viral particles have been included in this second edition. The book is still aimed primarily at Master's students, Ph.D. students, and postdoctoral researchers with degrees in biology, chemistry, physics or related scientific disciplines who have an interest in or are working with viruses. It provides an up-to-date overview of many important concepts, techniques, studies and applications in structural and physical virology for specialized researchers working with viruses, regardless of their field of specialization, covering the latest research together with fundamental concepts and well-established facts. In short, this book is basic enough to be used by undergraduate and Ph.D. students, but advanced and up-to-date enough for experienced scientists with an interest in structural and/or physical virology.

- Abstract
This book presents the results of research on the regularities during thermocyclic impact on changes in structural-phase states of functional alloys with low-stability or instability in the area of structural-phase transformations. Without clarification of the physical regularities of the influence of thermomechanical impact on the properties of alloys, it is impossible to develop technological processes of processing functional materials; therefore, the book widely uses the results of many years of research by the authors of the book. It is known that critical temperatures and stresses for martensitic transformation, for example, B 2↔︎ B 19′, in NiTi are very sensitive to cycling. The study of structural-phase states, corresponding to changes in physical-mechanical properties of intermetallics in the area of transformations, is a necessary aspect of understanding the nature of the influence of thermomechanical cycling on the properties of functional alloys. This book is dedicated to the fundamental physical aspects of stability, the influence of structural defects on properties and structural-phase transformations of FCC alloys. This book is useful for a wide range of specialists—scientific researchers and engineers, working in the field of materials science and physics of condensed systems, as well as teachers, postgraduates and students, specializing in the field of materials science.

- Abstract
Historically, natural products have great relevance for the development of new drugs. Natural molecules, in addition to directly providing new compounds with different therapeutic functions have provided scaffolds and a great diversity of structures that serve as inspiration for the design and discovery of new drugs. The great structural complexity and the significant number of natural compounds that can be obtained and their advantages also present some historical problems that need to be overcome. Issues such as difficulty in isolation, difficulty in synthesizing compounds found in nature in the laboratory, screening to evaluate the biological properties of these compounds, and structural optimization to enhance the pharmacological properties of biomolecules; are some of the main difficulties encountered in research with natural products and in the design/discovery of new medicines. Therefore, this book addresses the great scientific advances that provide practical solutions to usingnatural products to develop new drugs. We address topics related to the genesis of research projects that use natural products to design new drugs. We address the discovery of new species, initial processes for identification and extraction of compounds, isolation and identification of these structures, techniques, and advances in vitro and in vivo methods that support the discovery of new natural drugs, synthesis of new compounds from natural molecules, in silico optimization processes of potentially promising compounds.

- Abstract
This volume comprises the first part of the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications, FVCA, held in Strasbourg, France, during October 30 to November 3, 2023.The Finite Volume method, and several of its variants, is a spatial discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods are also built to preserve some properties of the continuous equations, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of the free energy, asymptotic stability, or stationary solutions. Due to these properties, finite volume methods belong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. In recent years, the efficient implementation of these methods in numerical software packages, more specifically to be used in supercomputers, has drawn some attention. This volume contains all invited papers, as well as the contributed papers focusing on finite volume schemes for elliptic and parabolic problems. They include structure-preserving schemes, convergence proofs, and error estimates for problems governed by elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. The second volume is focused on finite volume methods for hyperbolic and related problems, such as methods compatible with the low Mach number limit or able to exactly preserve steady solutions, the development and analysis of high order methods, or the discretization of kinetic equations.

Spontaneous pattern formation in nonlinear dissipative systems far from equilibrium is a paradigmatic case of emergent behaviour associated with complex systems. It is encountered in a great variety of settings, both in nature and technology, and has numerous applications ranging from nonlinear optics through solid and fluid mechanics, physical chemistry and chemical engineering to biology. This book is a first-hand account by one of the leading players in this field, which gives in-depth descriptions of analytical methods elucidating the complex evolution of nonlinear dissipative systems, and brings the reader to the forefront of current research.Since the publication of the first edition, applications of the theory of nonlinear dynamics have been substantially extended to the novel area of active systems, largely motivated by problems of biophysics and biomorphic technology. These problems typically involve media with internal orientation. This new edition incorporates a chapter discussing dynamics of liquids and soft solids with internal orientation, including special features of their instabilities and motion of topological defects, which form the background for various applications to the motion of cells, tissues, and activated soft materials. The contents of the first edition have also been substantially reworked, improving graphics, emphasizing more complex secondary instabilities, and dropping some material pertaining to dynamical systems. This book caters for graduate students and young researchers from many pertinent areas including applied mathematics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering and biophysics, as well as the seasoned scientist in search of a modern source of reference.

- Abstract
An original method of investigation of the conjugate conductive-convective problem of periodic heat transfer is developed. The novelty of the approach is that a particular conjugate problem is replaced by a general boundary-value problem for the heat conduction equation in the solid. Within the framework of the hyperbolic model of thermal conductivity, the effect of self-reinforcement of the degree of conjugation by increasing the period of oscillations is found. The processes of hydrodynamics and heat exchange with periodic internal structure are considered: periodic model of turbulent heat transfer, hydrodynamic instability, bubbles dynamics in liquid, and model of evaporating meniscus. The book is intended as a source and reference work for researchers and graduate students interested in the field of conjugate heat transfer.

- Abstract
This book discusses various passive and active techniques for controlling unsteady flow dynamics and associated coupled mechanics of fluid-structure interaction. Coupled multiphysics and multidomain simulations are emerging and challenging research areas, which have received significant attention during the past decade. One of the most common multiphysics and multidomain problems is fluid-structure interaction (FSI), i.e., the study of coupled physical systems involving fluid and a structure that have a mechanical influence on each other. Regardless of the application area, the investigation toward modeling of fluid-structure interaction and the underlying mechanisms in dealing with coupled fluid-structure instability with real-world applications remains a challenge to scientists and engineers. This book is designed for students and researchers who seek knowledge of computational modeling and control strategies for fluid-structure interaction. Specifically, this book provides acomprehensive review of the underlying unsteady physics and coupled mechanical aspects of the fluid-structure interaction of freely vibrating bluff bodies, the self-induced flapping of thin flexible structures, and aeroelasticity of shell structures. Understanding flow-induced loads and vibrations can lead to safer and cost-effective structures, especially for light and high-aspect ratio structures with increased flexibility and harsh environmental conditions. Using the body-fitted and moving mesh formulations, the physical insights associated with structure-to-fluid mass ratios, Reynolds number, nonlinear structural deformation, proximity interference, near-wall contacts, free-surface, and other interacting physical fields are covered in this book. In conjunction with the control techniques, data-driven model reduction approaches based on subspace projection and deep neural calculus are covered for low-dimensional modeling of unsteady fluid-structure interaction.
