The resistance of triatomines to pyrethroids has been reported in several Latin American countries, including Brazil, indicating the need for the development of new approaches for the control of vectors of the Chagas disease. In here, we evaluated the insecticidal potential of the essential oil of Eucalyptus urograndis (Myrtaceae) against unsexed third and fourth instars of Rhodnius neglectus Lent (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in topical application, fumigation, surface contact, and repellency . The insecticidal activity of the essential oil tested was detected by topical application (LD50 = 0.1731 μL/insect and LD99 = 0.2948 μL/insect for 24 h), fumigation (LC50 = 0.021 mL/mL air and LC99 = 0.1525 mL/mL air for 24 h) and surface contact (LC50 = 0.7073 μL/cm(2) and LC99 = 4.59 μL/cm(2) for 24 h). Mortality observed after 48-72-h exposure was very high and did not allow for any adjustment of the mortality curve. In the repellency assay, an effect was observed on 80% of tested nymphs. However, no repellency was observed after 24 h of exposure. Eucalyptus urograndis essential oil has a high insecticidal and repellent potential for R. neglectus nymphs, whether serving as a molecular model for new substances or as an alternative for the control of these insects.

The length of the four right antennal segments from nymphs and adults of Panstrongylus megistus Burmeister, Rhodnius neglectus Lent, Rhodnius prolixus Stal and Triatoma vitticeps Stal were measured. The length of the antennal segments of the adults of all four species, 4th and 5th instars of P. megistus, and 5th instar of R. neglectus and R. prolixus followed the same pattern: 2nd>3rd>4th>1st. The pattern of 1st and 2nd instars of P. megistus was: 4th>3rd>2nd>1st. For 3rd instars of P. megistus, 1st and 2nd instars of R. neglectus and R. prolixus they were: 3rd>4th>2nd>1st. Third and 4th instars of Rhodnius neglectus and R. prolixus had a pattern of: 3rd>2nd>4th>1st. Only T. vitticeps showed the same pattern (4th>3rd>2nd>1st) for all five instars. The morphological study of the second antennal segment by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) disclosed that the first instars of all four species exhibit type I bristles sensillae and one trichobothrium. Another type III bristle and basiconic, campaniform, coeloconic, trichoid sensillae and type I bristle and trichobothria were noted on their fourth instars and adults. Campaniform sensillae were noted only on T. vitticeps adults. Nodules were observed in the joint between 1st and 2nd antennal segments of adults of P. megistus and T. vitticeps, but not on R. neglectus and R. prolixus.

Background: With the combined treatment procedure of isolated limb perfusion (ILP), delayed surgical resection and external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for locally advanced soft tissue sarcomas (STS) of the extremities, limb salvage rates of more than 80% can be achieved. However, long-term damage to the healthy surrounding tissue cannot be prevented. We studied the late effects on the normal tissue using the LENT-SOMA scoring system., Patients and Methods: A total of 32 patients-median age 47 (range 14-71) years-were treated for a locally advanced STS with ILP, surgical resection and often adjuvant 60-70 Gy EBRT. After a median follow-up of 88 (range 17-159) months, the patients were scored, using the LENT-SOMA scales, for the following late tissue damage: muscle/soft tissue, peripheral nerves, skin/subcutaneous tissue and vessels., Results: According to the individual SOM parameters of the LENT-SOMA scales, 20 patients (63%) scored grade-3 toxicity on one or more separate items, reflecting severe symptoms with a negative impact on daily activities. Of these patients, 3 (9%) even scored grade-4 toxicity on some of the parameters, denoting irreversible functional damage necessitating major therapeutic intervention., Conclusions: In evaluating long-term morbidity after a combined treatment procedure for STS of the extremity, using modified LENT-SOMA scores, two-thirds of patients were found to have experienced serious late toxic effects.

Background: Greater than 60% of adults have overweight or obesity. Self-weighing is an effective weight loss and weight maintenance tool. However, little is known about self-weighing habits among the primary care patient population. Our objective was to examine the frequency of patient-reported self-weighing, and to evaluate the associations of self-weighing with demographic characteristics and self-monitoring behaviors., Methods: We conducted an analysis of survey data collected as part of the PaTH Clinical Data Research Network, which recruited a cohort of 1,021 primary care patients at 4 academic medical centers. Patients of all body mass index (BMI) categories were included., Results: Response rate of 6-month survey was 727 (71%). The mean age was 56 years, and most were female (68%), White (78%), college graduates (66%), and employed/retired (85%). The mean BMI was 30.2 kg/m 2 , 80% of participants had a BMI ≧ 25 kg/m 2 . Of patients with BMI ≧ 25 kg/m 2 , 35% of participants self-weighed weekly and 23% daily. Participants who reported self-weighing at least weekly were more likely to be older (59 vs 54 years, p < 0.01), married (p = 0.01), college graduates (p = 0.03), White (p < 0.01), and employed vs disabled/unemployed (p < 0.01). Patients who self-weighed daily had a lower BMI (29 kg/m 2 vs 31 kg/m 2 , p = 0.04). Patients who tracked exercise or food intake were more likely to self-weigh daily (p < 0.01), as were patients wanting to lose or maintain weight (p < 0.01)., Conclusions: Despite its potential for primary and secondary obesity prevention, only 35% of primary care patients with overweight or obesity engage in self-weighing weekly and less than a quarter (23%) self-weigh daily. Socioeconomic status appears to be a factor influencing regular self-weighing in this population, potentially contributing to greater health disparities in obesity rates. Patients who self-weighed daily had a lower BMI, suggesting that it may play a role in primary prevention of obesity. More work is needed to explore self-weighing among patients.

Sugary drink consumption is associated with many adverse health outcomes, including weight gain, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. These beverages are widely marketed and ubiquitously available. This analysis explores sugary drink consumption across all age groups among New York City (NYC) residents using representative survey data. Three population-based representative surveys of NYC residents of different age groups were analyzed. Adult participants, youth participants, and caregivers of child participants self-reported the number of sugary drinks they consumed per day. Mean sugary drink intake per day was estimated overall and by demographic characteristics, for the 2015 cycle of each survey and the 2007-2015 cycles of the adult survey. T tests were used to determine whether means differed by demographics. Long-term trends in mean sugary drink consumption among adult participants were conducted to examine changes over time overall and by demographic characteristics. In 2015, the mean daily number of sugary drinks consumed was 0.53 (95% CI 0.45, 0.61) among children 0-5 years old, 1.05 (95% CI 0.90, 1.21) among children 6-12 years old, and 1.16 (95% CI 1.09, 1.29) among NYC high school students. Among all NYC adults, sugary drink intake decreased 36% from 1.03 (95% CI 0.99, 1.08) in 2007 to 0.66 (95% CI 0.62, 0.70) drinks per day in 2015, p < 0.01. However, at each age level, there were persistent disparities in sugary drink consumption by sex, race/ethnicity, educational attainment, and poverty level. Decreasing overall rates of sugary drink consumption are promising; however, disparities by socio-demographics are a concern. Reducing sugary drink consumption across all ages is recommended as is minimizing the introduction at an early age. Reduction of sugary drink consumption will require a collaborative, multi-sectoral approach.

Inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, characterized by dysregulated immune responses leading to tissue damage and chronic inflammation, present significant health challenges. This review uniquely focuses on efferocytosis-the phagocyte-mediated clearance of apoptotic cells-and its pivotal role in these disorders. We delve into the intricate mechanisms of efferocytosis' four stages and their implications in disease pathogenesis, distinguishing our study from previous literature. Our findings highlight impaired efferocytosis in conditions like atherosclerosis and asthma, proposing its targeting as a novel therapeutic strategy. We discuss the therapeutic potential of efferocytosis in modulating immune responses and resolving inflammation, offering a new perspective in treating inflammatory disorders., (© 2024. In a sustainable economy, each firm perceives different levels of carbon risk, but there are few studies on the relationship between a firm's carbon risk perception and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance. This paper examines the impact of firm-level carbon risk perception on ESG performance using Chinese A-share listed firms during 2011-2020. We find a positive relationship between firm-level perception of carbon risk and firm ESG performance. Further analysis shows that analyst coverage and media attention exert a substantial moderating effect on the link between carbon risk perception and ESG performance. We identify three channels through which carbon risk perception affects ESG performance. First, rising carbon risk perception enables firms to take measures to reduce pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions and increases environmental (E) scores. Second, this perception encourages firms to take responsibility for social employment and increases social (S) scores. The evolution of the brain in mammals is characterized by changes in size, architecture, and internal organization. Consequently, the geometry of the brain, and especially the size and shape of the cerebral cortex, has changed notably during evolution. Comparative studies of the cerebral cortex suggest that there are general architectural principles governing its growth and evolutionary development. In this chapter, some of the design principles and operational modes that underlie the fractal geometry and information processing capacity of the cerebral cortex in primates, including humans, will be explored. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their major source, endometrial stromal cells (ESCs), play important roles in menstruation. However, other mechanisms in endometrial shedding may be unexplored. This study focused on four proteins: S100A8 and S100A9 (alarmins) are binding partners and induce MMPs, MMP-3 cycle-dependently plays a key role in the proteolytic cascade, and CD147, which has S100A9 as its ligand, induces MMPs. Immunostaining for these proteins was performed on 118 resected specimens. The percentage and location of each positive reaction in ESCs were measured and compared using Image J. The influence of leukocytes on S100A8 or S100A9 immunopositivity was also examined. From the premenstrual phase, S100A8 and MMP-3 began to have overlapping expressions in ESCs of the superficial layer, and ESC detachment was found within these sites. S100A9 was expressed from the late secretory phase and CD147 already from earlier. Later, the expression sites of S100A9 and CD147 included those of S100A8. Before menstruation, S100A8 or S100A9 expression was not affected by leukocytes. These results suggest that the local formation of S100A8/S100A9 complex, which occurs specifically in ESCs upon progesterone withdrawal, induces the local expression of MMP-3 and serves as a switch to the lysis phase., (© 2023. Radiologic imaging, especially MRI, has long been the mainstay for rectal cancer staging and patient selection for neoadjuvant therapy prior to surgical resection. In contrast, colonoscopy and CT have been the standard for colon cancer diagnosis and metastasis staging with T and N staging often performed at the time of surgical resection. With recent clinical trials exploring the expansion of the use of neoadjuvant therapy beyond the anorectum to the remainder of the colon, the current and future state of colon cancer treatment is evolving with a renewed interest in evaluating the role radiology may play in the primary T staging of colon cancer. The performance of CT, CT colonography, MRI, and FDG PET-CT for colon cancer staging will be reviewed. N staging will also be briefly discussed. It is expected that accurate radiologic T staging will significantly impact future clinical decisions regarding the neoadjuvant versus surgical management of colon cancer., (© 2023. Panoramic views offer information on heading direction and on location to visually navigating animals. This review covers the properties of panoramic views and the information they provide to navigating animals, irrespective of image representation. Heading direction can be retrieved by alignment matching between memorized and currently experienced views, and a gradient descent in image differences can lead back to the location at which a view was memorized (positional image matching). Central place foraging insects, such as ants, bees and wasps, conduct distinctly choreographed learning walks and learning flights upon first leaving their nest that are likely to be designed to systematically collect scene memories tagged with information provided by path integration on the direction of and the distance to the nest. Equally, traveling along routes, ants have been shown to engage in scanning movements, in particular when routes are unfamiliar, again suggesting a systematic process of acquiring and comparing views. Parents who contacted 1 of 15 children's mental health agencies in Ontario, Canada reported on where and why they were seeking mental health services for their 4- to 17-year-old children. Parents contacted an average of four agencies (± 1.7; range = 1-14) in the previous year. Approximately one-half of parents were looking for either multiple types of treatment, or help for different problems, across agencies. The complex pattern of help-seeking evidenced in our study likely increases the burden on the mental health care system and on families, and may reduce the likelihood that families will connect with the most appropriate treatment.

The need for effective technologies to remediate the insensitive munitions compound 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) is emerging due to the increasing use by the US Army and environmental concerns about the toxicity and aqueous mobility of NTO. Reductive treatment is essential for the complete degradation of NTO to environmentally safe products. The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of applying zero-valent iron (ZVI) in a continuous-flow packed bed reactor as an effective NTO remediation technology. The ZVI-packed columns treated an acidic influent (pH 3.0) or a circumneutral influent (pH 6.0) for 6 months (ca. 11,000 pore volumes, PVs). Both columns effectively reduced NTO to the amine product, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (ATO). The column treating the pH-3.0 influent exhibited prolonged longevity in reducing NTO, treating 11-fold more PVs than the column treating pH-6.0 influent until the breakthrough point (defined as when 85% of NTO was removed). The exhausted columns (defined as when only 10% of NTO was removed) regained the NTO reducing capacity by reactivation using 1 M HCl, fully removing NTO. After the experiment, solid-phase analysis of the packed-bed material showed that ZVI was oxidized to iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals such as magnetite, lepidocrocite, and goethite during NTO treatment. This is the first report on the reduction of NTO and the concomitant oxidation of ZVI in continuous-flow column experiments. This paper is an overview of this special issue devoted to watershed research in Acadia National Park (Acadia NP). The papers address components of an integrated research program on two upland watersheds at Acadia NP, USA (44 degrees 20' N latitude; 68 degrees 15' E longitude). These watersheds were instrumented in 1998 to provide a long-term foundation for regional ecological and watershed research. The research was initiated as part of EPA/NPS PRIMENet (Park Research and Intensive Monitoring of Ecosystems Network), a system of UV-monitoring stations and long-term watershed research sites located in US national parks. The initial goals at Acadia NP were to address research questions about mercury, acid rain, and nitrogen saturation developed from prior research. The project design was based on natural differences in forests and soils induced by an intense wildfire in one watershed in 1947. There is no evidence of fire in the reference watershed for several hundred years. We are testing hypotheses about controls on surface water chemistry, and bioavailability of contaminants in the contrasting watersheds. The unburned 47-ha Hadlock Brook watershed is 70% spruce-fir mature conifer forest. In contrast, burned 32-ha Cadillac Brook watershed, 4 km northeast of the Hadlock watershed, is 20% regenerating mixed northern hardwoods and 60% shrub/rocky balds. Differences in atmospheric deposition are controlled primarily by forest stand composition and age. The watersheds are gauged and have water chemistry stations at 122 m (Cadillac) and 137 m (Hadlock); watershed maximum elevations are 468 and 380 m, respectively. The stream water chemistry patterns reflect, in part, the legacy of the intense fire, which, in turn, controls differences in forest vegetation and soil characteristics. These factors result in higher nitrogen and mercury flux from the unburned watershed, reflecting differences in atmospheric deposition, contrasting ecosystem pools of nitrogen and mercury, and inferred differences in internal cycling and bioavailabilty.

An improved understanding of psychosocial factors and their dynamic changes and interrelations is required to increase comprehension of the effects of exercise on weight loss. Women (N = 99) participating in a theory-based, community-administered obesity program focused on self-regulation of weight-loss behaviors were assessed. Analyses of a theory- and causal chain-driven sequential multiple mediation model affirmed the hypothesized path from moderate exercise[right arrow]decreased negative mood[right arrow]increased self-regulation[right arrow]increased self-efficacy[right arrow]improved weight-loss behaviors[right arrow]weight loss over 6 months. Alternate significant paths within the model reinforced an expected relationship between exercise-associated decrease in negative mood and increased self-regulation. Although completion/non-completion of the equivalent of 3 moderate bouts of exercise/week was significantly related to weight loss in bivariate analyses, it was no longer significant when the above mediators were sequentially entered. This study aims to enrich our understanding of the valuation consequence of climate risk in financial markets. The primary focus of our study is on the stock price reaction to firms' climate-risk-related information. We employ transcripts of Chinese listed firms' performance briefings to capture the climate risk at the firm level. Using a sample of Chinese listed firms between 2009 and 2021, we find that greater corporate climate risks lead to negative market reactions over a short time window, consistent with the market quickly comprehending corporate climate risks. This result holds for a series of robustness checks. We further find that the negative impact of corporate climate risk on the stock price reaction operates through the increased market trading activities, greater investor attention, and reduced positive media coverage. Finally, we demonstrate that industry carbon emission, local abnormal temperature, state ownership, institutional shareholding, and dividend payout are important moderators that shape the association of the corporate climate risk and the adverse market reaction. The fundamental pathophysiological mechanism in the progression of chronic heart failure following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is ventricular remodeling, in which innate and adaptive immunity both play critical roles. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) have been demonstrated to function in a range of pathological conditions, such as infections, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and tumors. However, it is unclear how MDSCs contribute to cardiac remodeling following AMI. This study aimed to identify the function and underlying mechanism of MDSCs in controlling cardiac remodeling following AMI. Following AMI in mice, MDSCs frequencies changed dynamically, considerably increased on day 7 in blood, spleens, lymph nodes and hearts, and decreased afterwards. Consistently, mice with AMI displayed enhanced cardiac function on day 14 post-AMI, reduced infract size and higher survival rates on day 28 post-AMI following the adoptive transfer of MDSCs. Furthermore, MDSCs inhibited the inflammatory response by decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α, IL-17, Cxcl-1, and Cxcl-2) expression, up-regulating anti-inflammatory cytokine (TGF-β1, IL-10, IL-4, and IL-13) expression, reducing CD3 + T cell infiltration in the infarcted heart and enhancing M2 macrophage polarization. Mechanistically, MDSCs improved the release of anti-inflammatory factors (TGF-β1 and IL-10) and decreased the injury of LPS-induced cardiomyocytes in vitro in a manner dependent on cell-cell contact. Importantly, blockade of IL-10 partially abolished the cardioprotective role of MDSCs. Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) stand out as pervasive organic pollutants, prompting an imperative need to investigate their hazardous effects. Computational chemistry methods play a crucial role in this exploration, offering a safer and more time-efficient approach, mandated by various legislations. In this study, our focus lay on the development of transparent, interpretable, reproducible, and publicly available methodologies aimed at deriving quantitative structure-activity relationship models and testing them by modelling the mutagenicity of NACs against the Salmonella typhimurium TA100 strain. Descriptors were selected from Mordred and RDKit molecular descriptors, along with several quantum chemistry descriptors. For that purpose, the genetic algorithm (GA), as the most widely used method in the literature, and three alternative algorithms (Boruta, Featurewiz, and ForwardSelector) combined with the forward stepwise selection technique were used. The construction of models utilized the multiple linear regression method, with subsequent scrutiny of fitting and predictive performance, reliability, and robustness through various statistical validation criteria. The models were ranked by the Multi-Criteria Decision Making procedure. Findings have revealed that the proposed methodology for descriptor selection outperforms GA, with Featurewiz showing a slight advantage over Boruta and ForwardSelector. Concentrations of one metalloid (As) and eight metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined in tissues (muscle, liver, and kidney) of eight snake species (Bothrops neuwiedi, Crotalus durissus, Dipsas mikanii, Epicrates crassus, Helicops modestus, Micrurus carvalhoi, Oxyrhopus guibei, and Oxyrhopus trigeminus) from Lagoa Santa Karst. Except for Cu and Zn, all other analyzed elements were detected in concentrations within the ranges previously reported for snakes inhabiting polluted areas, emphasizing Hg (specific Hg mean concentrations varied from 0.87 to 9.76 μg g -1 d.w). The highest mean concentrations of all elements except Zn were found in muscle samples of the false corals O. guibei (means ranged from 2.01 [Pb] to 9.76 [Hg]). The highest Zn mean concentration (13.77 μg g -1 d.w) was detected in the kidney of the water snake H. modestus. No significant correlation was found between element concentrations and body size for all species. Significant interorgan differences were observed for As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the three tissues in H. modestus. Significant interspecific differences were found in at least one organ for all elements. Significant pairwise differences were found between diet specialist species and between these species and broader diet species, while no significant difference was found between the broader diet species. The bioaccumulation of As and metals in snakes from Lagoa Santa Karst could be associated with natural rock dissolution and erosion processes but also with the wide-scale mining in the region and the increased agriculture and urbanization., (© 2024. Background: Increasing primary care's attractiveness as a career choice is an important task of socially accountable medical schools. Research has broadly studied influences on medical students' career choice. However, a deeper understanding of the processes behind career decision-making could support medical schools in their efforts to promote primary care careers., Objective: To explore the dynamics of career choice during medical school with a focus on primary care, based on a previously developed conceptual framework., Approach: Qualitative study using a phenomenological, inductive-deductive approach DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Individual interviews were conducted from May 2019 to January 2020 with 14 first-year postgraduate trainee physicians, graduates of the Faculty of Medicine in Geneva, Switzerland, purposively sampled based on their interest in primary care during undergraduate studies. The interview guide was developed to elicit narratives about career-related decision-making. Two authors coded the transcripts. Thematic analysis alternated with data collection until thematic saturation was reached. Emerging themes were discussed and refined within the research team., Key Results: Two main themes emerged: (1) developing professional identity, expressed as a changing professional image from unprecise and idealistic to concrete and realistic; priorities changed from content-based to lifestyle-based preferences; (2) individual trajectories of career-related decision-making, determined by different stages of refining professional interests; students navigated this process by employing various strategies, ranging from active exploration to passive behaviors., Conclusions: This study's narrative approach illustrates the dynamic nature of career choice and refines elements of a conceptual framework previously developed by the authors. Its findings underline the importance of exploration, for which personal experiences and observations of physicians' work are crucial. This study employs micro-level data sourced from China's A-share listed companies, drawing on the attention-based view and upper echelons theory as theoretical foundations. Utilizing text analysis, we quantify top management team's (TMT) environmental attention, subsequently employing a two-way fixed-effects model to investigate the correlation between TMT's environmental attention and firm's green innovation. Proceeding judiciously in light of extant evidence, we tentatively derive the subsequent conclusions: (1) TMT's environmental attention can drive firm's green innovation. This viewpoint still holds after multiple robustness tests such as Heckman model and placebo test. (2) Executive environmental background positively moderates the influence of TMT's environmental attention on firm's green innovation. (3) Information asymmetry between the government and firms could potentially exist, as the effect of TMT's environmental attention on firm's green innovation is not significant for firms with more government subsidies. (4) CEO duality attenuates the favorable influence of TMT's environmental attention. Liposomes as a drug delivery system may overcome the problems associated with non-compliance to eyedrops and inadequate control of inflammation after cataract surgery. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of a single subconjunctival injection of liposomal prednisolone phosphate (LPP) for the treatment of post-cataract surgery inflammation. This is a phase I/II, open-label non-comparative interventional trial of patients undergoing cataract surgery. All patients received a single injection of subconjunctival LPP intraoperatively. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of eyes with an anterior chamber cell count of 0 at postoperative month 1. Ocular and non-ocular adverse events, including elevated intraocular pressure, rebound iritis and pseudophakic macular edema were monitored. Five patients were enrolled in this study. The mean age was 66.6 ± 6.2 and 4 (80%) were male. The proportion of patients with AC cell grading of 0 was 0%, 80%, 80%, and 100% at day 1, week 1, month 1, and month 2 after cataract surgery, respectively. Mean laser flare photometry readings were significantly elevated at week 1 after cataract surgery (48.8 ± 18.9, p = 0.03) compared with baseline, decreasing to 25.8 ± 9.2 (p = 0.04) at month 1 and returned to baseline by month 2 (10.9 ± 5.1, p = 1.0). No ocular or non-ocular adverse events were observed. Liposomal prednisolone phosphate, administered as a single subconjunctival injection intraoperatively, can be a safe and effective treatment for post-cataract surgery inflammation. Background: The association between smoking and surgical complications after bariatric surgery has been well-established. However, given that this patient population is inherently weight-concerned, understanding the effects of tobacco use on postoperative weight loss is essential to guiding clinicians in counseling patients. We aimed to summarize the current literature examining the effects of preoperative and postoperative smoking, as well as changes in smoking status, on bariatric surgery weight loss outcomes., Methods: Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, and SCOPUS databases were queried to identify relevant published studies., Results: Overall, 20 studies were included. Preoperative and postoperative smoking rates varied widely across studies, as did requirements for smoking cessation prior to bariatric surgery. Reported preoperative smoking prevalence ranged from 1 to 62%, and postoperative smoking prevalence ranged from 6 to 43%. The majority of studies which examined preoperative and/or postoperative smoking habits found no association between smoking habits and postoperative weight loss outcomes. A minority of studies found relatively small differences in postoperative weight loss between smokers and nonsmokers; these often became nonsignificant with longer follow-up. No studies found significant associations between changes in smoking status and weight loss outcomes., Conclusion: While smoking has been associated with weight loss in the general population, most current evidence demonstrates that smoking habits are not associated with weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery. However, due to the heterogeneity in study design and analysis, no definitive conclusions can be made, and more robust studies are needed to investigate any relationship between smoking and long-term weight loss outcomes. Background: Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) is a rare immunodeficiency disorder characterized by impaired phagocytic function, leading to recurrent infections and granuloma formation. Genetic mutations in NADPH oxidase complex components, such as CYBB, NCF1, NCF2, and CYBA genes, contribute to the pathogenesis. This case report explores the possible ocular and hematologic complications associated with CGD., Case Presentation: A 6-year-old girl with a history of vitrectomy, membranotomy, and laser therapy due to congenital blindness (diagnosed with chorioretinopathy) was referred to the hospital with generalized ecchymosis and thrombocytopenia. Diagnostic workup initially suggested chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Subsequent admissions revealed necrotic wounds, urinary tract infections, and recurrent thrombocytopenia. Suspecting immunodeficiency, tests for CGD, Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) and dihydrorhodamine (DHR) were performed. She had a low DHR (6.7), and her NBT test was negative (0.0%). Her whole exome sequencing results confirmed autosomal recessive CGD with a homozygous NCF1 mutation., Conclusion: This case underscores the diverse clinical manifestations of CGD, including recurrent thrombocytopenia and possible early-onset ocular involvement. The diagnostic challenges highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving hematologists, immunologists, and ophthalmologists for accurate diagnosis and management. Nasal mucosa tumors are an uncommon process and very dificult to work on with surgery. Radiotherapy associated or not with chemotherapy is the standard method to treat the disease. However, its access it is in the majority of the case not possible, making the surgery the best choice to try to achieve the patient's control. The anatomy of the region makes the complete surgical resection very difficult to achieve using the common and conventional blade scalpel surgery. The study features the advantages of using a CO 2 laser to perform nasal mucosa carcinoma surgery in 6 dogs (N = 6). For the work we used an Aesculigth CO 2 surgical laser model -Vetscalpel®, with the settings of 12Watts in a Superpulse mode, and a 0.25-0.4 mm focus to dissect the nasal mucosa, and a 1.5 mm focus for vaporization of the area. All the masses were histopathologically characterized as squamous cells carcinoma. The CO 2 surgical laser allow us to work in a bloodless region promoting a more accurate dissection of the nasal mucosa sparing therefore the underlying and adjacent tissues and being less invasive. Also, it was possible to do the vaporization of the entire surgical area interviened. None of the patients presented relapse of clinical signs. Only 2 individuals were alive at the end of the study, presenting a survival rate of 420 and 514 days, which is in the same line of literature results of the treatment with radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy wich shows a median of 474-580 days. The study demonstrates successful outcomes with CO 2 laser surgery in treating nasal mucosa SCC in dogs, with patients experiencing improved survival rates compared to traditional treatment methods. This highlights the efficacy and potential of CO 2 laser surgery as a valuable tool in managing aggressive nasal tumors in veterinary oncology., (© 2024. Osteoarthritis (OA) is an incapacitating and one of the most common physically degenerative conditions with an assorted etiology and a highly complicated molecular mechanism that to date lacks an efficient treatment. The capacity to design biological networks and accurately modify existing genomic sites holds an apt potential for applications across medical and biotechnological sciences. One of these highly specific genomes editing technologies is the CRISPR/Cas9 mechanism, referred to as the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, which is a defense mechanism constituted by CRISPR associated protein 9 (Cas9) directed by small non-coding RNAs (sncRNA) that bind to target DNA through Watson-Crick base pairing rules where subsequent repair of the target DNA is initiated. Up-to-date research has established the effectiveness of the CRISPR/Cas9 mechanism in targeting the genetic and epigenetic alterations in OA by suppressing or deleting gene expressions and eventually distributing distinctive anti-arthritic properties in both in vitro and in vivo osteoarthritic models. Background: The prevalence of smoking among patients undergoing bariatric surgery has been reported to be as high as 40%. The effect of smoking in the perioperative period has been extensively studied for various surgical procedures, but limited data are available for bariatric surgery. The objective of this study is to review the existing literature to assess: (1) the impact of smoking on postoperative morbidity and mortality after bariatric surgery, (2) the relationship between smoking and weight loss after bariatric surgery, and (3) the efficacy of smoking cessation in the perioperative period among bariatric surgery patients., Methods: A comprehensive search of electronic databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library from 1946 to February 2020 was performed to identify relevant articles. Following an initial screen of 940 titles and abstracts, 540 full articles were reviewed., Results: Forty-eight studies met criteria for analysis: five structured interviews, three longitudinal studies, thirty-two retrospective studies and eight prospective studies. Smoking within 1 year prior to bariatric surgery was found to be an independent risk factor for increased 30-day mortality and major postoperative complications, particularly wound and pulmonary complications. Smoking was significantly associated with long-term complications including marginal ulceration and bone fracture. Smoking has little to no effect on weight loss following bariatric surgery, with studies reporting at most a 3% increased percentage excess weight loss. Rates of smoking recidivism are high with studies reporting that up to 17% of patients continue to smoke postoperatively., Conclusions: Although current best practice guidelines recommend only a minimum of 6 weeks of abstinence from smoking prior to bariatric surgery, the findings of this review suggest that smoking within 1 year prior to bariatric surgery is associated with significant postoperative morbidity. More investigation is needed on strategies to improve smoking cessation compliance among bariatric surgery patients in the perioperative period.
