Brain tumors represent the most common solid tumors in childhood, accounting for almost 25% of all childhood cancer, second only to leukemia. Pediatric central nervous system tumors encompass a wide variety of diagnoses, from benign to malignant. Any brain tumor can be associated with significant morbidity, even when low grade, and mortality from pediatric central nervous system tumors is disproportionately high compared to other childhood malignancies. Management of children with central nervous system tumors requires knowledge of the unique aspects of care associated with this particular patient population, beyond general oncology care. Pediatric brain tumor patients have unique needs during treatment, as cancer survivors, and at end of life. A multidisciplinary team approach, including advanced practice nurses with a specialty in neuro-oncology, allows for better supportive care. The objective of the study was to characterize the phenotype of males and females with autism spectrum disorder born preterm versus those born at term. Descriptive statistical analyses identified differences between male and female autism spectrum disorder subjects born preterm compared to term for several phenotypic characteristics and comorbidities. Of the 115 (13.0% of 883) born preterm, a greater percentage of males had sleep apnea (13.8% vs 2.5%, p < 0.0001), seizure disorders (17.0% vs 8.5%, p = 0.01), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (14.9% vs 6.6%, p = 0.005). Females born preterm were more likely to be nonverbal (22.2% vs 4.6%, p = 0.001). In summary, phenotypic differences were observed, especially among males. The results may have implications for understanding the underpinnings of a subset of individuals with autism spectrum disorder and contribute to the development of focused treatments for autism spectrum disorder among children born preterm. At the core of successful visual analytics systems are computational techniques that transform data into concise, human comprehensible visual representations. The general process often requires multiple transformation steps before a final visual representation is generated. This article characterizes the complex raw data to be analyzed and then describes two different sets of transformations and representations. The first set transforms the raw data into more concise representations that improve the performance of sophisticated computational methods. The second transforms internal representations into visual representations that provide the most benefit to an interactive user. The end result is a computing system that enhances an end user's analytic process with effective visual representations and interactive techniques. There has been progress in the science of analytical reasoning and in meeting the recommendations for future research that were laid out when the field of visual analytics was established. Researchers have also developed a group of visual analytics tools and methods that embody visual analytics principles and attack important and challenging real-world problems. However, these efforts are only the beginning and much study remains to be done. This article examines the state of the art in visual analytics methods and reasoning and gives examples of current tools and capabilities. It shows that the science of visual analytics needs interdisciplinary efforts, indicates some of the disciplines that should be involved and presents an approach to how they might work together. Finally, the article describes some gaps, opportunities and future directions in developing new theories and models that can be enacted in methods and design principles and applied to significant and complex practical problems and data. Concern regarding an occupational risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection may influence surgeons' willingness to operate. A questionnaire survey of all orthopedists in the five cities with the most cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was conducted to assess attitudes and practices. Questionnaires were completed anonymously by 325 of 510 orthopedists. In the previous year, 43 percent had examined or operated on an HIV-infected patient, and at least 90 percent who had had an opportunity to operate on an HIV-infected patient had chosen to do so. Decisions to operate did not appear to be based on hospital requirements, perceived ethical obligations, or knowledge of HIV transmissibility. Most orthopedists (85 percent) claimed the right to order preoperative HIV testing of high-risk patients, but such testing was ordered infrequently. Although most orthopedists believed they could not be compelled to operate and that ethically they could refuse when their health was threatened, they almost always were willing to treat HIV-infected patients.
