This study analyzed all Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication refereed convention papers from 1999 to 2008 with regard to author names and author institutional affiliations, in order to rank by productivity individual scholars and institutions globally. All refereed papers sponsored by twenty-seven AEJMC organizational units were examined by author name and affiliation to establish institutional productivity patterns and rankings based on the Carnegie Classification system, and individual productivity rankings per organizational unit. The link between top paper productivity and refereed regular paper productivity was assessed with regard to AEJMC organizational units. While top paper institutional productivity was substantially correlated with institutional refereed regular paper productivity, this was not the case for individual paper productivity. Findings are potentially useful for students, educators, and administrators by filling a void in the literature on leading institutions and individuals across specialties of journalism and mass communication represented in AEJMC. Organization has published 569 papers in its 20 years. Of these 44% have been cited less than four times, and just on 9%, or 48 papers, have never been cited at all—not even by their own authors. The article discusses the historical differences which have characterized the pulp and paper industry and the stevedoring industry on the Pacific Coast from 1934 to 1948. The International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers and the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers represented workers in the pulp and paper industry. The two unions negotiate jointly with the Pacific Coast Association of Pulp and Paper Manufacturers in a meeting which usually is held annually. The differences in the nature of the two industries and what they have contributed to the record of peace in the one instance and of conflict and warfare in the other are considered in the article.

The article describe the shop steward-training program of the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers which is operated jointly with the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers. Due to the emergence of trade unionism throughout the U.S. industry, new needs and new jobs were created for international unions. The objective of the training of union stewards in the pulp and paper industry is to stimulate activity among the men and women who represent the local union. The activity will depends upon the local union and the location of the community.

Meta-analysis (the statistical combination of a set of studies in a given area, with the aim of establishing an overall or average effect of something) is increasingly common in work and organization studies. Critiques of meta-analysis are now common. There is also a well-known alternative based in realism. The purpose in bringing together the two papers by Nielsen and Miraglia and by Vincent and colleagues is not to rehearse the critiques or simply explain realism or realist evaluation. The two papers certainly perform these functions in setting out problems with meta-analysis and also identifying when and to what extent it remains valid. The goal, however, is to move forward by showing what a realist synthesis would look like and illustrating how it works. The article discusses the highlights of the International Symposium on Fatty Acids held in Tunis, Tunisia from May 18 to 19, 2006. The symposium was a collaboration between the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies (INSTM), the National Centre for Trainers' Training and Pedagogical Engineering, the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition (IBCHN), and the Mother and Child Foundation. Recent findings on health aspects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were tackled during the symposium.

The article reports the findings of our case study of a social movement organization opposed to the pollution of a river by a paper mill. Using data from participant-observation and archival sources, we analyze the relationship between elites and non-elites in this community mobilization. We find that: (1) mobilization was inhibited for 80 years because of the economic oppression of the region; (2) when a movement organization finally emerged, it was initiated by elites who resisted grassroots membership in order to control movement goals and protect their own economic interests; and (3) the elite-sponsored organization declined because of internal conflict but generated a new, grassroots organization. Based on our analysis, we conclude that protest and quiescence are cycles in the interaction of elites and non-elites that reflect social class conflict. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on the confusion in medicolegal papers caused by the use of a considerable variety of British and American formulas in assessing hearing disabilities. In relation to this, a member of the British Association of Otolaryngologists asked the association to consider the matter. Recommendations were made for otologists to use standardized methods whenever they were not required to employ some other particular statutory or out-of-court settlement scheme.

This paper is born out of frustration at outdated models of thinking that are alive and well today instead of being dead and buried (and a source of amusement). The marketing community obstinately clings to false beliefs about how people and brands coexist in everyday life, in the face of irrefutable scientific proof to the contrary. Like those who insisted that the world was flat when it had been proven to be round, or those who, even today, refuse to believe in the evidence of evolution, many people who are responsible for the growth and success of organisations, brands, products and services are unwilling, or unable, to change their views about how "we" (the institution, organisation, company or brand) influence "you" (the consumer, customer or target group) to think or act. Between 15 and 25 years ago (1980-1990), radical new thinking emerged about how advertising "works" that is still applicable today. At the time this thinking was provocative and challenging, yet it failed to take root. Why? The first objective of this paper is to revisit the key hypotheses presented in three very different papers written during this decade and to analyse why these theories failed to flourish. The second objective is to demonstrate through current hard science that the thinking in each case was sound and can now be scientifically proven and, furthermore, that this knowledge is neither heretical nor to be feared. Instead it can lead to innovative and successful marketing solutions that align the interests of organisations (company, brand, product, service) with those of human beings (consumers, customers). The article presents the results of a Internet survey regarding the satisfaction of members of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) toward the 2007 annual meeting of the AERA in Chicago, Illinois. The surveys indicate a majority of respondents found the online registration and paper submission resources for the meeting satisfactory and commented that they attended the meeting primarily to network with colleagues and attend workshops. Attendees reported a high level of satisfaction with the meeting's symposiums and discussions.

Information about what wass discussed at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) meeting that was held in March 1961 is presented. The funds that were made available for the publishing of meetings has increased from 248 to 356 and the contributing institutions went from 69 to 99. With that being noted, the average number of papers per institution has remained constant during the growth, even though the number of papers presented ranged from one to 25 per institution.

The NRC has served as a vital common ground where international researchers can freely present, debate, construct their views regarding the context of a mutually supportive community. Our world is in a state of critical transition demanding new, creative, ecosystemically fit and sustainable responses to complex challenges. We need both new types of knowledge and new modes of knowledge production. Interdisciplinarity and Transdisciplinarity have the potential to support more congruently complex forms of knowledge (differentiated, integrated, recursive, emergent, ecosystemically fit). Their success is dependent on a deeper understanding of their own organizational complexity. In this paper, I highlight key knowledge gaps and research questions for the development of a richer knowledge base to guide the intentional management and facilitation of Interdisciplinarity and Transdisciplinary Relations toward creative and abductive outcomes. I defend the investigation of creativity and abduction, as hallmarks of the complexity of Interdisciplinarity and Transdisciplinarity, from a process, relational and complexity-informed perspective, mobilizing contributions from Psychology. I discuss Psychology's modes of engagement with Interdisciplinarity and Transdisciplinarity in addressing complex challenges. In this context, I introduce the notion of "dissolution" as an Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary relational process supporting the theoretical, methodological and pragmatic enrichment or transformation and increased complexity of different disciplines, bodies of knowledge or modes of knowing. President of the American Sociological Society Louis Wirth is planning for a Section on Contributed Papers for the next annual meeting that is to be held in New York from December 28 to 30, December, 1947. Although this Section is particularly de- signed for those younger members of the Society, including graduate students, who have not yet had an opportunity to appear on the pro- gram in other sections, contributions from other members of the Society will be welcome. The article offers information about the position paper entitled "Share Mental Health Care in Canada", which proposes to enhance the working relationship between family physicians and psychiatrists. The working group of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the College of Family Physicians of Canada has described the obligations and responsibilities of each of the two medical specialties in a proposed shared care model for the treatment of mental illness. The position paper highlights the current difficulties experienced between family physicians and psychiatrists, which poor communication and lack of contact between members of each of the 2 specialty groups.

Care as a concept has long been central to the nursing discipline, and care ethics have consequently found their place in nursing ethics discussions. This paper briefly revisits how care and care ethics have been theorized and applied in the discipline of nursing, with an emphasis on Tronto's political view of care. Adding to the works of other nurse scholars, we consider that Tronto's care ethics is useful to understand caring practices in a sociopolitical context. We also contend that this vision can be used specifically to politicize nurses, by encouraging them to think critically about the context in which they work and how they can participate to change the status quo, notably by prompting the democratization of care in institutional settings. We illustrate this by demonstrating how moral distress that can occur with aggressive or futile treatments in the intensive care unit can be reduced if nurses are systematically included in the decision-making process. By showing some ways in which nursing political actions can begin to change the status quo as it pertains to futile treatments at the end of life, we can help empower nurses to strive to be included in political spaces and voice their concerns to have their professional needs met. The article highlights the PLACE conference of Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry which was held in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 17-21, 2006. The 2006 PLACE Division Technical Award and the Samuel Zweig Prize were given to Andrew Christie, principal consultant and president of Optex Process Solutions LLC. The position of chairperson of the PLACE Division was given to David Timm, vice president of Charter Films.

The authors considers the opinion of the Strategy Research Initiative, a cross-disciplinary group of research-oriented faculty, on the characteristics of high-quality strategy research. They point out that despite the importance of disciplinary diversity to the strength of the strategy field, it is also associated with several challenges including synthesization of shared quality norms and codification of editorial policies. The authors contend that the field needs to increase specialization level in strategy research to improve quality.

The article presents information on the advertising industry. The relationship between membership growth and the divisions and interest group expansion is close. Rarely does a division or interest group disband. So, logically, the older divisions tend to be the largest and the most stable--and carry the most weight. For example, the Newspaper and Advertising divisions typically garner large numbers of convention paper submissions, and, therefore, have a strong presence at the convention. Given their strong presence, other divisions want to co-sponsor panels with them, which give them an even bigger presence. A few brave souls periodically talk about whether the divisions need to reorganize, but they are so stable and so "normal," no one wants to make the leap. Given that the submitted research papers are blind reviewed, professors and graduate students compete for acceptance on the same level. As a result, we are privy to the bright minds beginning to climb the academic ladder. The down side, however, is that these graduate students have to be prolific to compete in the job market. One of the best benefits of AEJMC is how it exalts graduate education.

Temporal dynamics are at the heart of entrepreneurship. This Special Issue of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice presents a collection of papers focused on the intersection of time and entrepreneurial organization. Traditional approaches to the interface between entrepreneurship and time are grounded in western logic, where time is linear and scarce, faster is better, and the future is held to be more important than the past. The papers in this issue are framed by the editors in this perspective, but also suggest alternative conceptualizations of time that offer compelling new ways of understanding entrepreneurship. This article presents information on the report of the Committee on Public Relations of the American Sociological Society as of February 1, 1942. The work of the Committee on Public Relations has continued during the past year, along the two lines it followed in 1940. This has consisted of interpreting each number of the periodical "American Sociological Review" as it appeared to appropriate representatives of the newspaper and magazine press, and of facilitating the press coverage of the Society's annual meetings. The Committee has continued to follow a broadly representative policy in handling of materials from the periodical "American Sociological Review" and the papers for meetings. To serve adequately the Society and its speakers, the Committee needs to be in a position to advise reporters that a given paper is too technical for popular interpretation; or to furnish reporters with several suitable paragraphs from the paper; or to supply reporters with a rather complete press review of the paper. The Committee does not want reporters to feel obliged to cover meetings themselves.

The human capital represented by corporate employees involved in the information and knowledge economy is becoming an increasingly central value-creating factor in global competition. However, in contrast to other value-creating factors, human capital is more difficult to measure, evaluate and manage. Due to human capital's great importance for economic value creation, a series of studies on human capital evaluation have been published during the last few years. This paper discusses why so many traditional evaluation methods are only partly appropriate for categorizing, analyzing and evaluating human capital's special characteristics. In particular, it is difficult for many traditional approaches to integrate notions of flexibility and options with regard to the human capital of companies. Our result shows that the real options theory provides a theoretical framework for the evaluation of human capital and allows a differentiated analysis that, on a qualitative basis, enables investments in uncertainties that are associated with human capital. This theory thus forms the foundation for the quantification of human capital's inherent opportunities and risks. Consequently, this paper provides approaches for the future evaluation of human capital and a conceptual context for empirical studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over 600 delegates attended the latest Eurocorr event, held on 25–28 September in the MECC Congress Centre, Maastricht, The Netherlands. The meeting, which proved another success, followed the usual Eurocorr format of parallel oral sessions over three and a half days, and a poster session. The overall organiser on behalf of the EFC (European Federation of Corrosion) was the Netherlands Corrosion Centre (NCC), with Professor Hans De Wit taking the main responsibility.
