This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of news discourse analysis using CiteSpace to sketch its scientific landscape based on journal articles in English in the Scopus database from 1988 through 2020. The statistical analysis provides evidence for the interdisciplinarity of this area, and shows an upward trend in general over these years as well as an accelerating growth rate in the past decade. Findings also indicate that the problem-oriented CDA has gained the most popularity in this area since its emergence, and the appraisal framework, multimodality analysis, and discursive news values have become three hotspots of news discourse analysis. In addition, the authors in the West have contributed most in this area, but those from Chinese Mainland, Malaysia, South Africa, and Indonesia have gradually been an emerging powerhouse, which has added diversity in topics and will enhance equality and promote dialogue between different communities, ethnics, and races across the globe.

‘Service Quality’ and its influence in Library and Information Science discipline are spectacular when studied intensively. In this study, researchers adopted the Realist and Meta-narrative Evidence Syntheses: Evolving Standards review method and introduced a novel Initialization, Conceptualization, Actualisation) (ICA) framework for meta-narrative studies. This method would act as a boon particularly to the existing methods of conducting meta-narrative studies in social sciences in general and library sciences in particular. A total of 49 research articles were selected from Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases, covering a span of 5 years, that is, 2015–2019, published in the domain of library service quality. An extensive in-depth analysis of selected publications was carried out under seven categories (i.e. library, library services, quality, ServQUAL, LibQUAL+, user satisfaction and users’ expectations), which were generated using the VOS-Viewer software and ‘Review Tags’ (manually generated using OneNote). The seven categories further identify a total of 27 sub-categories. The quantitative findings revealed that all the 49 reviewed publications were published in 27 journals. All the journals have been indexed in the Scopus database, whereas 15 journals containing the remaining 22 publications are indexed in both WoS and Scopus databases. This study unfolds a transverse trend in library service quality. It would be beneficial for the library managers to sustain libraries’ service quality and set a benchmark in the said field.

Research on transactional sex and relationships within university spaces is growing. Much of this research focuses on the intergenerational nature and the centrality of sex and money in such relationships. However, little attention has been paid to transactional relationships that do not necessarily involve money and that involve people within the university such as students and nonacademic university workers. As such, there is a dearth of research on campus-based transactional relationships involving students themselves and university workers where nonmaterial resources other than money are central in mediating such relationships. This article attempts to fill this knowledge gap by examining the complex dynamics of transactional relationships within a university campus in Zimbabwe. The empirical findings shows that scarce resources in the midst of growing student enrolment compel many, especially female students to venture into the campus “sexual economy” to make do and get by. In a context of lack, and protracted economic crisis, students become vulnerable to transactional sex to access scarce resources such as good grades, accommodation, and books. Therefore, the campus sexual economy enables students to creatively navigate existential challenges on campus. I argue that the construction, perceptions, and experiences of transactional sex on campus are gendered and complex.

Interest in transparent and open science is increasing in special education, school psychology, and related disciplines. Proponents for open science reforms provide evidence that researchers in special education, and the broader social sciences, engage in practices that mitigate its credibility and reduce the validity of information disseminated to practitioners and policymakers. In light of these issues, this article reports on a survey of journal editors-in-chief and associate editors to gain insight into concerns regarding research reproducibility and the familiarity and viability of open science for improving research credibility. Results indicate that respondents were concerned about research reproducibility, were moderately familiar with open science practices, and viewed many as effective for improving research credibility. Finally, respondents supported the use of journals to encourage open science practices although there was little support for requiring their use. Findings are discussed in relation to open science and implications for research and practice.

This commentary suggests a (k)new model for the practice of Indigenous librarianship that positions a traditional natural resource management system as a metaphor for library practices. By detailing the experiences of Native Hawaiian librarians working with materials and collections representing Hawaiian knowledge, the article discusses specific Hawaiian natural resource management principles (kapu, kūlana, waiwai, and lele), and explores their possible applications in library contexts. The result is a description of Hawaiian librarianship grounded in Hawaiian values and practices with the goal of best serving Hawaiian communities.

This study maps the domain of indigenous librarianship. It conceives this field as constituted by theoretical, applied, and advocacy components. Indigeneity is theorized as an instrument that advances principles of indigenous rights in professional fields such as librarianship. The study offers the prospect of a revision of the traditional theory of librarianship by applying to this theory a notion of “living knowledge,” which is prominent in indigenous scholarship. It overviews culturally sensitive practices of knowledge organization and management that constitute an applied component of indigenous librarianship.

This bibliometric study investigates the research methodology practices of Master of Arts in Information Studies (MAIS) students at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The study established students’ insufficient understanding and application of research methodology concepts. Survey research was predominant, with purposive and convenience non-probability sampling methods being extensively used. Simple random sampling and stratified sampling were the probability sampling methods highly used. Findings further show advanced qualitative and quantitative data analyses were inadequately applied. In practice, the study findings can help Library and Information Science institutions around the globe improve teaching research methodology to produce quality theses with logical conclusions which can develop new theories. Quality theses can translate into increased quantity and quality of journal articles and growth of the Library and Information Science discipline. Thus, there is a need to strengthen research methodology training for students and lecturers to generate generalizable findings that meet diverse needs.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, libraries have been undertaking a number of activities aimed at minimizing their negative impact on the environment. Those that show such activity are called ‘green libraries’. This term appears in scientific, professional and popular science literature, but its definitions are vague and ambiguous. A preliminary analysis of the content of publications dealing with the issue of green libraries shows a modest representation of theoretical and synthetic texts. This article aims to fill this gap. It has three goals: (1) clarification of the term ‘green library’, (2) conceptualization of the term ‘green librarianship’ and (3) determination of ‘green librarianship’ areas. To achieve them, first, an analysis of the environmental discourse on green libraries and green librarianship in library science literature was performed to abstract green library indicators. Then, these indicators were verified. The selection of the sample for research was deliberate. The materials were collected using the Library, Information Science & Technology Abstract (LISTA) bibliographic and abstract database. As a result, the number of green library indicators has been extended, which has made it possible to clarify the definition of this term. The definition of ‘green librarianship’ was then formulated, and the areas of green librarianship were indicated. Conceptualization of the terms ‘green library’ and ‘green librarianship’ constitutes the value of this article. The practical implication of the study is the expansion of the number of green library indicators. These indicators can be used to develop a codebook for the content analysis of documents in the discussed area. This article may also contribute to the development of methods for the evaluation of activities and development of green libraries.

University educators and administrators have used Journalism & Mass Communication Educator as an outlet to share ideas. As the journal enters its 75th year of publication, it is also decades into the transition to peer review. Thus, it is important to review publication trends since this development. This study analyzes 30 years of research articles printed from 1990 to 2019. Aspects of article authorship are examined and reveal trends in the publication history. Results demonstrate the growing amount of diversity across a number of aspects and remains on par with publication trends throughout the discipline.

Expert-coded datasets provide scholars with otherwise unavailable cross-national longitudinal data on important concepts. However, expert coders vary in their reliability and scale perception, potentially resulting in substantial measurement error; this variation may correlate with outcomes of interest, biasing results in analyses that use these data. This latter concern is particularly acute for key concepts in peace research. In this article, I describe potential sources of expert error, focusing on the measurement of identity-based discrimination. I then use expert-coded data on identity-based discrimination to examine: 1) the implications of measurement error for quantitative analyses that use expert-coded data, and 2) the degree to which different techniques for aggregating these data ameliorate these issues. To do so, I simulate data with different forms and levels of expert error and regress conflict onset on different aggregations of these data. These analyses yield two important results. First, almost all aggregations show a positive relationship between identity-based discrimination and conflict onset consistently across simulations, in line with the assumed true relationship between the concept and outcome. Second, different aggregation techniques vary in their substantive robustness beyond directionality. A structural equation model provides the most consistently robust estimates, while both the point estimates from an Item Response Theory (IRT) model and the average over expert codings provide similar and relatively robust estimates in most simulations. The median over expert codings and a naive multiple imputation technique yield the least robust estimates.

Marvin Alkin and Jean King published three AJE articles on evaluation use over four years, a coherent and comprehensive series covering the historical development of evaluation use, definitions and factors associated with use and misuse, and theories of evaluation use and influence, concluding with assessment of the first 50 years of use research. They conclude with recommendations for future theory development and research on evaluation. I draw a different set of conclusions and pathway forward. Where they seek a common universal operational definition of evaluation use, I propose treating use as a thick sensitizing concept that invites diversity of context-specific meanings. Where they find evaluation use theory inadequate, I argue that it is sufficient for its purpose. Where they seek more development of evaluation-specific utilization theory, I propose drawing on more established and validated theories from social sciences to explain and illuminate evaluation use as occurring in complex dynamic systems.

In this piece, I comment on Heather Boushey’s David Gordon Memorial Lecture at the 2020 Allied Social Science Association meetings in San Diego. I identify the theory of change presented in Boushey’s lecture and discuss it in the context of contemporary economic thought. I argue that Boushey’s theory of change makes an important normative intervention in economics science. I evaluate Boushey’s theory of change from the perspective of philosophy of science as well as drawing on historical evidence.

The 2020 bicentennial year of Indiana University (IU) Bloomington is a fitting time to recognize the 100-year legacy of the faculty members of the IU Music Education Department. This legacy has not been heretofore documented, exposing a gap in the knowledge of historical traditions and influences. The purpose of this study was to create a comprehensive list of the faculty names, and years of service, and to identify publications, leadership roles, curriculum development, and biographical insights. The historical narrative was created through immersion in the following primary sources found in the IU Archives: The annual Indiana University Bulletins, the Trustees Minutes, and miscellaneous clippings files containing photographs, news items, and obituaries. First edition hard copies of books and published articles by the faculty were examined. Greatest detail is provided for those IU professors of the distant past, including Edward Bailey Birge, Samuel T. Burns, Thurber H. Madison, Jack M. Watson, Dorothy G. Kelley, Newell H. Long, Miriam P. Gelvin, Charles R. Hoffer, and Robert H. Klotman. This study illustrates how one-storied Music Education Department is inextricably linked to its past and suggests that other legacy studies are needed for comparison and contrast.

This contribution benchmarks the 40th anniversary issue of the Journal of Macromarketing with an updated and topically organized bibliography of articles that can be used by interested researchers and in university courses devoted to or including a survey of this subject. Fisk (1990), Shapiro (2006), and Shapiro, Tajadewski, and Shultz (2009) have provided previous renditions of this sort. However, the topical arrangement differs from these earlier efforts and instructive introductions are provided for each of the 13 broad topic sections proposed. References provided in the articles listed below them would extend sources for these topics. Our goal was to provide recency as well as variety in focus and methodology throughout Macromarketing literature, including both long-standing and emerging areas of interest.

This article defines and explores the direct citations between citing publications (DCCPs) of a publication. We construct an ego-centred citation network for each paper that contains all of its citing papers and itself, as well as the citation relationships among them. By utilising a large-scale scholarly dataset from the computer science field in the Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG-CS) dataset, we find that DCCPs exist universally in medium and highly cited papers. For those papers that have DCCPs, DCCPs do occur frequently; highly cited papers tend to contain more DCCPs than others. Meanwhile, the number of DCCPs of papers published in different years does not vary dramatically. This paper also discusses the relationship between DCCPs and some indirect citation relationships (e.g. co-citation and bibliographic coupling).

The purpose of this research is to map and analyse the conceptual and thematic structure of library and information science (LIS) research from the perspective of the co-word analysis. The bibliographical records consist of all the research papers published in the LIS core journals between 1990 and 2016 and indexed in Web of Science. ‘CiteSpace’ was used to visualise the co-word network of LIS studies. The frequency of co-occurrence and centrality scores in the overall structure of the field showed that the word ‘Science’ is the most significant and pivotal keyword among the nodes in the co-word network of LIS literature, and in this respect, the word ‘Library’ is in the second place. However, the results of the social network analysis uncovered that in spite of the high frequency of the word ‘library’, the pivotal role of the term has been exposed to decline over the time. The results of the analysis of co-word clusters showed that ‘information seeking and retrieval’ is the most important research focus in the intellectual structure of LIS literature during 1990–2016. Also, analysis of the hot spots of the LIS research based on Kleinberg algorithm indicated that the words ‘Internet’ and ‘World Wide Web’ have attracted the most attention by LIS scholars during the years under study.

The Journal of Research in Music Education ( JRME) is the longest running serial dedicated to music education research, and its articles are widely considered exemplars in the field worldwide. This is a bibliometric study of the sources cited in articles published in the JRME from its inception in 1953 to 2015. We extracted 31,679 references from 1,341 the JRME articles; rank-ordered those frequently cited journals, articles, and authors; investigated the interdisciplinarity of cited journals; observed the age density of cited sources; and studied the proportional distribution of reference types. Results were then compared across 10-year spans, except for the first, which was 12 years, and discussed in light of known parameters for research in other fields. These analyses have revealed several interesting trends reflecting the evolution and maturation of the journal and music education research.

A group of the academic library’s vast untapped clientele to whom more attention is now being paid is persons with disability. Drawing from the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions’ checklist on what constitutes disability-friendly libraries, this study sought to ascertain if academic libraries in the Upper East Region of Ghana have made provisions for persons with disability. The research adopted a qualitative approach. The data used for the analysis is drawn from interviews with respondents, the majority of whom were visually or mobility-impaired, who were purposively selected from 11 tertiary institutions. The findings reveal that academic libraries in the Upper East Region have yet to implement the stipulated regulations of the ratified Persons with Disability Act of Ghana. The majority of libraries are inaccessible to persons with disability beyond the main entrance of the libraries. The biggest challenge is the absence of diverse media information for persons with visual and hearing impairments. Also, the findings reveal that library staff lack adequate knowledge of issues relating to persons with disability and their right to access information. The study highlights the challenges which hinder persons with disability from accessing quality information from libraries. The study, therefore, recommends that relevant state institutions be empowered to implement the ratified Persons with Disability Act in Ghana and increase education among stakeholders on the need to improve access to information for persons with disability. Also, there should be increased investment and allocation of funds to libraries to provide for the information needs of persons with disability.

This research concerns determining authors’ scientific influence in library and information science research and their impact on the intellectual structure of the discipline by means of integrative indicators of the Scholarly Capital Model and co-authorship patterns. Research records comprised articles published from 1945 to 2016 in library and information science core journals and indexed in Web of Science. CiteSpace (software for visualization of scientific patterns and trends) was employed to map the intellectual structure of library and information science research based on co-authorship patterns. The results showed that the top 10 authors of library and information science research with the highest scores in terms of influence indicators (except for one person) were mostly concerned with the field of scientometrics which can be considered as the special impact of scientometric authors on the intellectual structure of library and information science research especially in recent years. Based on the results of the research, integrative use of scientometric indicators for measuring authors’ level of scholarly influence may grant a more precise perspective for decision makers in the field of library and information science.

Consortia are a form of association between organizations seeking to reach a common objective. This study aims to systematize discussion in the area of library consortia and relate it to aspects of information management. To this end, the Web of Science databases was used to identify the literature to be analysed, resorting to Bibliometrix software. The results show a tendency in the literature to discuss themes such as open access contract management. The study concludes on an evolution of themes setting out from shared resources and directs future research towards identifying questions of access to and ownership of information resources.

In this research note, we investigate how environmentalism is discussed and transferred in families. We used the University of Kentucky Libraries search engine and the PsycINFO database to collect and analyze the manuscripts that studied environmentalism in families or used the concepts and theories of the Family Studies field. Results of the published manuscripts revealed that family plays an important role in environmentalism. Parents and children influence each other, and this varies according to the culture and parenting style. The implications of the study are further discussed.

Ralph L. Baldwin (1872–1943) was a prominent music educator who, in addition to his role as a teacher, was an author, composer, and leader of various professional music organizations. Baldwin later became known through his many publications and as the administrator of the Sterrie Weaver Summer School after Weaver’s untimely death. This narrative study was intended to describe the teaching philosophy developed by Baldwin. In addition, the visibility and recognition brought to Baldwin through his books in the “Music Education Series,” published by Ginn and Company, were detailed. Baldwin advocated teaching sight reading or the “language” of music to balance out the rote singing methods being used. He blended the rote and note philosophies much like his predecessor Sterrie Weaver. While Baldwin’s methods and publications are not necessarily used in American classrooms today, it is important to recognize the quality ideas and resources that he offered to music educators of that time. Baldwin’s publications are a good example of an effective instructional method, including materials, that directly preceded the adoption of current methods and approaches to music education.

The American Educational Research Association sponsored the 2018 #Cloud2Class conference. Through virtual or in-person participation, more than 100 individuals participated in a three-day conference focused on social media and education. Several presentations addressed aspects of social media. Structured discussions took place around both these projects and other areas of the field that need more attention. Collaborations/partnerships formed around similar ideas and resulted in the publication of projects, revision of teaching practices, presentations at conferences, and professional networking. Strategies for organization and challenges that arose are also included for those who wish to host a similar event.

In this monthly column, Kappan managing editor Teresa Preston explores how the magazine has covered current issues in the past. This column looks at how authors have discussed the best ways to educate the most advanced students. Ensuring that students are appropriately challenged at school has interested Kappan authors since as far back as the 1940s. Programs have had the goal of improving students’ abilities, helping them with social challenges, and building a better workforce. Although some have decried these programs for elitism, educators have long sought ways to expand the definition of giftedness to bring in more students.
