Commonly used DFT methods for the calculation of 1JCH coupling constants have typically required the application of ad hoc correction factors, modification of functionals, or empirical scaling to improve the fit between predicted and experimental values. Here we demonstrate that highly accurate 1JCH coupling predictions can be obtained without such adjustments by careful selection of DFT methods for geometry optimization and J-coupling calculations (e.g. B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)(mixed)//mPW1PW/cc-pVTZ). The proposed method was cross-validated against a diverse set of 122 1JCH couplings and was successfully applied to the conformational and stereochemical analysis of strychnine and a previously unreported trachylobane diterpene natural product. Multiple-FID acquisition (MFA) within the same scan is applied to acquire simultaneously multiple 2D spectra from a single NMR experiment. A discussion on the incorporation of the MFA strategy in several homonuclear and heteronuclear 2D pulse sequences is presented. In this work, we describe the synthesis of a new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand, derived from a hybrid pyrazole-imidazolium scaffold, namely 1-[2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)ethyl]-3-((S)-1-phenylethyl)-3H-imidazol-2-ylidene (L). This ligand has been used as a stabilizer for the organometallic synthesis of palladium(0) nanoparticles (Pd NPs). L presents a better stabilizing effect than its pre-carbenic HLCl counterpart, allowing the formation of isolated Pd NPs while HLCl yields aggregated ones. Additionally, molecular Pd(ii) coordination compounds of L and HLCl were synthesized and characterized to better understand the coordination modes of these ligands. Both molecular and colloidal Pd systems have been further tested in catalytic C–C coupling processes. Three different types of reactions have been observed depending on the catalytic system: (i) the Suzuki–Miyaura reaction takes place with Pd molecular complexes; (ii) a secondary reaction, the dehalogenation of the substrate, is always detected and (iii) the C–C homocoupling between two molecules of bromoarenes is observed with colloidal catalysts. A new CNNC carbene-phthalazine tetradentate ligand has been synthesised, which in the reaction with [Ru(T)Cl3] (T = trpy, tpm, bpea; trpy = 2,2′;6′,2′′-terpyridine; tpm = tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methane; bpea = N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethanamine) in MeOH or iPrOH undergoes a C–N bond scission due to the nucleophilic attack of a solvent molecule, with the subsequent formation of the mononuclear complexes cis-[Ru(PhthaPz-OR)(trpy)X]n+, [Ru(PhthaPz-OMe)(tpm)X]n+ and trans,fac-[Ru(PhthaPz-OMe)(bpea)X]n+ (X = Cl, n = 1; X = H2O, n = 2; PhthaPz-OR = 1-(4-alkoxyphthalazin-1-yl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium), named 1a+/2a2+ (R = Me), 1b+/2b2+ (R = iPr), 3+/42+ and 5+/62+, respectively. Interestingly, regulation of the stability regions of different Ru oxidation states is obtained by different ligand combinations, going from 62+, where Ru(iii) is clearly stable and mono-electronic transfers are favoured, to 2a2+/2b2+, where Ru(iii) is almost unstable with regard to its disproportionation. The catalytic performance of the Ru–OH2 complexes in chemical water oxidation at pH 1.0 points to poor stability (ligand oxidation), with subsequent evolution of CO2 together with O2, especially for 42+ and 62+. In electrochemically driven water oxidation, the highest TOF values are obtained for 2a2+ at pH 1.0. In alkene epoxidation, complexes favouring bi-electronic transfer processes show better performances and selectivities than those favouring mono-electronic transfers, while alkenes containing electron-donor groups show better performances than those bearing electron-withdrawing groups. Finally, when cis-β-methylstyrene is employed as the substrate, no cis/trans isomerization takes place, thus indicating the existence of a stereospecific process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An efficient method for the synthesis of N-arylated pyridazinones from potassium 2-furantrifluoroborate and aryldiazonium salts is described. The reaction was run in water at 0 - 5 °C in short reaction times and without any catalyst or additive. A mechanistic proposal is made based on the experimental data and DFT calculations. New Ru complexes containing the bpea-pyr ligand (bpea-pyr stands for N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-3-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)propan-1-amine), with the formula [RuCl2(bpea-pyr)(dmso)] (isomeric complexes 2a and 2b) or [Ru(CN-Me)(bpea-pyr)X)]n+ (CN-Me = 3-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium-2-ide; X = Cl, 3, or X = H2O, 4), have been prepared and fully characterized. Complexes 3 and 4 have been anchored onto an electrode surface through electropolymerization of the attached pyrrole group, yielding stable polypyrrole films. The electrochemical behaviour of 4, which displays a bielectronic Ru(IV/II) redox pair in solution, is dramatically affected by the electropolymerization process leading to the occurrence of two monoelectronic Ru(IV/III) and Ru(III/II) redox pairs in the heterogeneous system. A carbon felt modified electrode containing complex 4 (C-felt/poly-4) has been evaluated as a heterogeneous catalyst in the epoxidation of various olefin substrates using PhI(OAc)2 as an oxidant, displaying TON values of several thousands in all cases and good selectivity for the epoxide product. The bis(2-pyridyl)ethylamine (bpea) ligand has been used as a starting material for the synthesis of dinuclear Ru complexes of general formula trans,fac-{[RunX(bpea)]2(μ-bpp)}m+(for X = Cl, n = II, m = 1, trans-RuII-Cl, 1+; for X = OH, n = III, m = 3, trans-RuIII-OH, 23+) where the 3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazolate anionic ligand (bpp) acts as bridging dinucleating ligand, the bpea ligand coordinates in a facial manner and the monodentate ligands X are situated in a transfashion with regard to one another. These complexes have been characterized in solution by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, UV-vis and electrochemical techniques and in the solid state by X-ray diffraction analysis. The reaction of 1(PF6) with Ag+generates the corresponding solvated complex where the Cl ligand has been removed as insoluble AgCl, followed by the oxidation of Ru(ii) to Ru(iii) to generate the corresponding dinuclear complex trans-RuIII-OH, 2(PF6)3. The latter has been shown to catalytically oxidize water to molecular dioxygen using Ce(iv) as oxidant. Quantitative gas evolution as a function of time has been monitored on line by both manometry and mass spectroscopy (MS) techniques. A series of fused tetracycles with a benzene or cyclohexadiene core (2a–h) is satisfactorily prepared by intramolecular [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadditions of triynic and enediynic macrocycles (1a–h) under RhCl(PPh3)3 catalysis; the enantioselective cycloaddition of macrocycles 1b and 1e gives chiral tetracycles with moderate enantiomeric excess.
