Abstract

The Baikal-GVD deep underwater neutrino experiment participates in the international multi-messenger program to detect the astrophysical sources of high- and ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray particles, being at the stage of array deployment and a step-by-step increase of the telescope’s effective volume to the scale of a cubic kilometer. At present, the telescope consists of seven clusters containing 2016 photodetectors. The effective volume of the detector has reached 0.35 km $${}^{3}$$ for the selection of shower events from neutrino interactions in Baikal water. The experimental data have been accumulated in a continuous exposure mode since 2015, allowing a prompt data analysis and a celestial-sphere monitoring program to be implemented in real time. We discuss the structure of the data acquisition system, describe the physical event reconstruction procedure in the mode of fast response to alerts, and present the results of our analysis of nine alerts from the polar IceCube telescope from early September to late October 2020.

Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a deep-underwater neutrino detector of cubic-kilometer scale. It is designed to detect astrophysical neutrinos up to multi-PeV energies and beyond. The deployment of this facility began in spring 2015. Since April 2020, the detector includes seven clusters, each consisting of eight strings carrying in total 288 optical modules located at depths of 750 to 1275 m. By the end of the first phase of construction of the detector in 2024, it is planned to deploy 15 clusters, whereby an effective volume of 0.75 km $${}^{3}$$ for detecting high-energy cascades would be reached. The design and status of the Baikal-GVD detector are described in the present article along with selected results of data analysis.

Abstract

The Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory and Advanced Virgo observatories recently discovered gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral. A short gamma-ray burst that followed the merger of this binary was also recorded by Fermi gamma-ray burst monitor and International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory, indicating particle acceleration by the source. The precise location of the event was determined by optical detections of emission following the merger. We searched for high-energy neutrinos from the merger in the energy range of 1 TeV–100 PeV using the Baikal Gigaton Volume Detector. No neutrinos directionally coincident with the source were detected within ±500 s around the merger time, as well as during a 14-day period after the gravitational wave detection. We derived 90% C.L. upper limits on the neutrino fluence from GW170817 during a ±500 s window centered on the gravitational wave trigger time, and a 14-day window following the gravitational wave signal under the assumption of an E−2 neutrino energy spectrum.

Abstract

The objective of the Baikal-GVD project is the construction of a km3-scale neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal. The Gigaton Volume Detector consists of a large three-dimensional array of photo-multiplier tubes. The first GVD-cluster has been deployed and commissioned in April 2015. The data acquisition system (DAQ) of the detector takes care of the digitization of the photo-multiplier tube signals, data transmission, filtering and storage. The design and the implementation of the data acquisition system are described.

Abstract

We present our results of searches for neutrino signal from dark matter annihilations in the Sun at Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope and Baikal NT200 Deep-Underwater Neutrino Telescope. We obtain new upper limits at 90% CL on muon and neutrino fluxes, annihilation rate and on cross sections of dark matter elastic scattering off proton and compare them with the limits obtained by other experiments.

We analyze sensitivity of the gigaton volume telescope Baikal-GVD for detection of neutrino signal from dark matter annihilations or decays in the Galactic Center. Expected bounds on dark matter annihilation cross section and its lifetime are found for several annihilation/decay channels.

Abstract

The Prototyping phase of the BAIKAL-GVD project has been started in April 2011 with the deployment of first autonomous engineering array which comprises all basic elements and systems of the Gigaton Volume Detector (GVD) in Lake Baikal. The prototyping phase will be concluded with deployment of the GVD demonstration cluster “DUBNA” in 2015, which will comprise 192 light sensors arranged at 8 strings. The first stage of the GVD demonstration cluster which consists of three strings was deployed in April 2013 and successfully operated up to February 2014. We review the prototyping phase of the BAIKAL-GVD project and describe the configuration and design of the 2013 engineering array.

Abstract

In April of 2013, the first stage of the experimental cluster of the NT1000 deep-water neutrino telescope consisting of three strings with 24 optical modules in each was installed at Lake Baikal and switched on in the continuous exposure mode. The detection and data acquisition systems of this setup are described.

10. Upper limit on the cross section for elastic neutralino-nucleon scattering in a neutrino experiment at the Baksan Underground Scintillator Telescope

Abstract

The results of a neutrino experiment that involved 24.12 yr of live time of observation of muons from the lower Earth’s hemisphere with the aid of the Baksan Underground Scintillator Telescope are presented. In the problem of searches for a signal from the annihilation of dark matter in the Sun, an upper limit on the cross section for the elastic scattering of a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) on a nucleon was obtained at a 90% confidence level from an analysis of data accumulated within 21.15 yr of live time of observation. A neutralino in a nonminimal supersymmetric theory was considered for a WIMP. The best limit at the Baksan Underground Scintillator Telescope on the cross section for spin-dependent neutralino interactionwith a proton corresponds to 3×10−4 pb for the neutralino mass of 210 GeV/c 2. This limit is three orders of magnitude more stringent than similar limits obtained in experiments that detected directly WIMP scattering on target nuclei.

Abstract

The NT1000 deep-water neutrino telescope with an effective volume of ∼2 km3 is currently being developed at Lake Baikal by the BAIKAL collaboration. The telescope will be composed of functionally independent setups—clusters of strings of optical modules based on photomultiplier tubes (with eight strings in each cluster). Since 2011, field tests of the basic elements and systems of the future telescope included in autonomous measuring complexes—prototypes of the NT1000 cluster—have been performed at Lake Baikal. The basic elements and the layout of one of the currently considered versions of the acoustic positioning system for the NT1000 telescope are described, and results of tests of the system prototype included as a component in the experimental cluster of the year 2012 are presented.

Abstract

The currently running NT200 and NT200+ Baikal neutrino telescopes and the prospects for development of the Baikal Neutrino Project are briefly descr⇊ed. Preliminary results of the search for neutrino events correlated with cosmological gamma-ray bursts at the NT200 are presented. The feasibility of developing a method for acoustic detection of ultrahigh-energy neutrinos in the Baikal Neutrino Project is discussed. The calculation results for the energy spectrum and zenith-angle distributions of atmospheric neutrinos in the energy range from 10 to 107 GeV obtained within various high-energy hadron-nucleus interaction models are presented.

Abstract

The status of neutrino experiments in connection with the fundamental problem of searches for a signal from dark matter is discussed. Limits on the magnitude of the effect of dark-matter-particle annihilation in the Sun that were obtained with neutrino telescopes are presented. In particular, the first results from the NT-200 Baikal Deep Underwater Neutrino Telescope are described.

Abstract

The experimental results obtained at the Baksan underground scintillation telescope are briefly reviewed. The neutrino flux from galactic sources has been studied, and an upper limit has been obtained on it. An upper limit has been placed on the flux of heavy magnetic monopoles by searching for slow ionizing particles. The signal from the neutrino momentum in supernova birth has been detected. A limit on proton decay has been obtained. By recording muons from extensive air showers, it has been shown that their chemical composition does not vary up to 5×10 15 eV .
