SUMMARY: Based on both forced oscillation and ultrasonic pulse transmission methods, we investigated solid pore infill influences on rock elastic moduli in a broad frequency range $[ {1 - 3000,\,\,{{10}^6}} ]$ Hz for different differential pressures. For a Berea sandstone sample, filled sequentially by solid (${22\,\,^{\rm{o}}}{\rm{C}}$), quasi-solid (${26\,\,^{\rm{o}}}{\rm{C}}$) and liquid (${34\,\,^{\rm{o}}}{\rm{C}}$) octadecane, a frequency-dependence was found for the Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus and bulk modulus, nevertheless, these elastic parameters were strongly suppressed by increasing pressures. Experimental measurements showed that shear wave velocity and modulus of solid-octadecane-filled samples are significantly larger than those of the dry and liquid-octadecane-filled ones, implying the potential stiffening effects related to solid infill in compliant pores. A three porosity structure model, which describes the solid stiffening effects related to equant, compliant and the intermediate pores with aspect ratios larger than those of compliant pores but much less than those of stiff pores, was used to compare against the experimentally measured elastic properties for octadecane pore infill, together with several other fluid/solid substitution theories. The agreement between experimental measurements and theoretical predictions is reasonably good for the sandstone tested, providing that the three porosity model can be applied for pressure- and frequency-dependent elastic moduli estimations for a viscoelastic pore-infill-saturated sandstone. Evaluating the combined squirt flow mechanism responsible for the observed moduli dispersion and attenuation is of great importance to reduce potential errors in seismic AVO inversion and 4-D seismic monitoring of gas-hydrate or bitumen-saturated reservoir, especially for reservoir rocks with complex microstructures and heterogeneous pore types. Background The role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in the development of colorectal neoplasia has been a matter of scientific debate with controversial findings. Aims This study examined the association between H. pylori infection and colorectal cancer (CRC) in a nationwide population-based Chinese cohort study. Methods A total of approximately 3936 individuals with newly diagnosed H. pylori infection (the H. pylori -infected cohort) and 15 744 age- and sex-matched patients with diagnoses absence of H. pylori infection (the comparison cohort) from 2000 to 2005 were identified from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. The Kaplan–Meier method was used for measuring the cumulative incidence of CRC in each cohort. Cox proportional hazards models were used to compute hazard ratios (HRs) and accompanying 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the estimation of the association between H. pylori infection and CRC. Results The cumulative incidence of CRC was higher in H. pylori- infected cohort than that in the comparison cohort (log-rank test, P  < 0.001). After adjustment for potential confounders, H. pylori infection was associated with a significantly increased risk of CRC (adjusted HR 1.87; 95% CI 1.37–2.57). In addition, the HR of CRC appeared to increase with increasing frequency of clinical visits for H. pylori infection. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that H. pylori infection was associated with an increased risk of CRC, which warrants confirmation and exploration of the underlying biologic mechanisms by future studies. Summary: Pre‐eclampsia is associated with increased levels of cholesterol and uric acid and an inflamed placenta expressing danger‐sensing pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). Crystalline cholesterol and uric acid activate the PRR Nod‐like receptor protein (NLRP)3 inflammasome to release interleukin (IL)‐1β and result in vigorous inflammation. We aimed to characterize crystal‐induced NLRP3 activation in placental inflammation and examine its role in pre‐eclampsia. We confirmed that serum total cholesterol and uric acid were elevated in pre‐eclamptic compared to healthy pregnancies and correlated positively to high sensitivity C‐reactive protein (hsCRP) and the pre‐eclampsia marker soluble fms‐like tyrosine kinase‐1 (sFlt‐1). The NLRP3 inflammasome pathway components (NLRP3, caspase‐1, IL‐1β) and priming factors [complement component 5a (C5a) and terminal complement complex (TCC)] were co‐expressed by the syncytiotrophoblast layer which covers the placental surface and interacts with maternal blood. The expression of IL‐1β and TCC was increased significantly and C5a‐positive regions in the syncytiotrophoblast layer appeared more frequent in pre‐eclamptic compared to normal pregnancies. In‐vitro activation of placental explants and trophoblasts confirmed NLRP3 inflammasome pathway functionality by complement‐primed crystal‐induced release of IL‐1β. This study confirms crystal‐induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation located at the syncytiotrophoblast layer as a mechanism of placental inflammation and suggests contribution of enhanced NLRP3 activation to the harmful placental inflammation in pre‐eclampsia. Background: Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) data and other information are sometimes used to calculate an 'Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) index' as a way of identifying businesses considered 'high risk' to be inspected as part of enforcement work. However, no evidence on the validity of this index exists. Aims: To evaluate the performance of the Alberta OHS index, a 'score' based largely on WCB claims data, and to see if an index calculated using different information could perform better. Methods: Data from the Alberta Compliance Management Information System database, 2011-2015, and WCB claim database, 2007-2014, were retrieved. Issuing 'stop work' or 'stop use' orders in inspections was defined as a proxy of high-risk outcome. The performance of the current and a modified OHS index were assessed using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and regression analyses. Results: In large employers, neither the current nor the modified OHS index was particularly effective in identifying 'high risk' employers with the area under the ROC curve (AROC) of 0.55 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.52-0.57; P < 0.001) and 0.59 (95% CI 0.57-0.62; P < 0.001), respectively. In small employers, neither index seemed very effective with an AROC of 0.54 (95% CI 0.53-0.56; P < 0.001) and 0.55 (95% CI 0.53-0.56; P < 0.001), respectively. These results were consistent in subgroup analyses of assignments without specific initiatives, both in large and small employers. Conclusions: Neither the current nor a modified OHS index seemed to effectively identify high-risk employers. First, both the duration from the diagnosis of psoriasis to the first angiographic diagnosis of CAD and the severity of psoriasis were not mentioned.[1] Indeed, previous studies have shown positive associations of the risk of CAD with the duration and severity (e.g. psoriatic arthritis) of psoriasis[2],[3] with no increase in risk of CAD among those with mild psoriasis.[4] Provision of relevant information would be useful for the readers in further understanding of the correlation between psoriasis and CAD severity. Essential oils have been found to exert antibacterial, antifungal, spasmolytic, and antiplasmodial activity and therapeutic effect in cancer treatment. In this study, the antibacterial activities of four main essential oils' components (thymol (Thy), eugenol (Eug), berberine (Ber), and cinnamaldehyde (Cin)) were evaluated against two food-borne pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium, either alone or in combination with streptomycin. Checkerboard assay demonstrated that Thy and Cin elicited a synergistic effect with streptomycin against L. monocytogenes, while a synergy existed between Cin or Eug and streptomycin against Salm. Typhimurium. Further experiments showed that this synergy was sufficient to eradicate biofilms formed by these two bacteria. Thus, our data highlighted that the combinations of specific components from essential oils and streptomycin were useful for the treatment of food-borne pathogens, which might help prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance through improving antibiotic effectiveness. Significance and Impact of the Study This study has shown the synergistic effect of four components of essential oil (thymol, eugenol, berberine and cinnamaldehyde) combined with streptomycin on planktonic and biofilm-associated food-borne pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium. These findings indicate that combination of specific components of essential oils with streptomycin may provide alternative methods to overcome the problem of food-borne bacteria both in suspension and in biofilm. Interest in genetic improvement of carcass and tenderness traits of beef cattle using genome-based selection (GS) and marker-assisted management programs is increasing. The success of such a program depends on the presence of linkage disequilibrium between the observed markers and the underlying QTL as well as on the relationship between the discovery, validation, and target populations. For molecular breeding values (MBV) predicted for a target population using SNP markers, reliabilities of these MBV can be obtained from validation analyses conducted in an independent population distinct from the discovery set. The objective of this study was to test MBV predicted for carcass and tenderness traits of beef cattle in a Canadian-based validation population that is largely independent of a United States-based discovery set. The discovery data set comprised of genotypes and phenotypes from >2,900 multibreed beef cattle while the validation population consisted of 802 crossbred feeder heifers and steers. A bivariate animal model that fitted actual phenotype and MBV was used for validation analyses. The reliability of MBV was defined as square of the genetic correlation (R²g) that represents the proportion of the additive genetic variance explained by the SNP markers. Several scenarios involving different starting marker panels (384, 3K, 7K, and 50K) and different sets of SNP selected to compute MBV (50, 100, 200, 375, 400, 600, and 800) were investigated. Validation results showed that the most reliable MBV (R²g) were 0.34 for HCW, 0.36 for back fat thickness, 0.28 for rib eye area, 0.30 for marbling score, 0.25 for yield grade, and 0.38 for Warner-Bratzler shear force across the different scenarios explored. ABSTRACT: This study investigated the improvement in genetic evaluation of fertility traits by using production traits as secondary traits (MILK = 305-d milk yield, FAT = 305-d fat yield, and PROT = 305- d protein yield). Data including 471,742 records from first lactations of Denmark Holstein cows, covering the years of inseminations during first lactations from 1995 to 2004, were analyzed. Six fertility traits (i.e., interval in days from calving to first insemination, calving interval, days open, interval in days from first to last insemination, numbers of inserninations per conception, and nonreturn rate within 56 d after first service) were analyzed using single- and multiple-trait sire models including 1 or 3 production traits. Model stability was evaluated by correlation between EBV from 2 sub-data sets (DATAA and DATAB). Model predictive ability was assessed by the correlation between EBV from training data (DATAA or DATAB) and daughter performance (yield deviation, defined as average of daughter-records adjusted for nongenetic effects) from test data (DATAB or DATAA) in a cross-validation procedure, and correlation between EBV obtained from the whole data set (DATAT) and from a reduced data set (DATAC1, which only contained the first crop daughters) for proven bulls. In addition, the superiority of the models was evaluated by expected reliability of EBV, calculated from the prediction error variance of EBV. Based on these criteria, the models combining milk production traits showed better model stability and predictive ability than single-trait models for all the fertility traits, except for nonreturn rate within 56 d after first service. The stability and predictive ability for the model including MILK or PROT were similar to the model including all 3 milk production traits and better than the model including FAT. In addition, it was found that single-trait models underestimated genetic trend of fertility traits. Background There have been no studies on the prevalence of types of human papillomavirus (HPV) in cutaneous warts that focus on warts in toe webs (WTW). There is no documented association between HPV 7 and WTW. Objectives To explore the clinical and histopathological features of WTW, and the distribution of HPV genotypes in patients with WTW. Methods The study group consisted of 20 patients with WTW; 31 patients with typical verruca vulgaris (VV) were enrolled as the disease control group, and 53 patients with tinea pedis and 48 healthy volunteers were enrolled as the disease-negative control group. Tissue specimens were analysed for clinical and histological features and distribution of HPV genotypes. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based direct sequencing, TA cloning and type-specific PCR (TS-PCR) were performed in the WTW and VV groups. Interdigital scale specimens from patients with tinea pedis and from healthy volunteers were analysed for HPV DNA by nested PCR and TS-PCR (HPV 7). Results All the patients with WTW were male and nearly all were immunocompetent; their mean age was 41 ± 10 years. The lesions presented mainly as soft, friable and vegetating clusters. HPV 7 was the predominant genotype in WTW with a frequency of 80% (16/20). Fourteen specimens were taken for histopathological examination. The most frequent histological results (seven out of 14) revealed characteristics of HPV 7 infections such as heavily stained cells containing medium-sized keratohyaline granules and a pronounced hyperkeratosis with parakeratosis. TA cloning showed that the sequence shared 90% or more homology with the HPV genotype in direct sequencing. No HPV 7 DNA was found in the scales taken from toe webs without warts. Conclusions This is the first study evaluating the prevalence of HPV types in WTW and the first report of the association between HPV 7 and specific subgroups of patients with warts. Summary Background One determining factor of skin colour is the distribution pattern of melanosomes within keratinocytes. Melanosomes in keratinocytes of light skin as in Caucasians are distributed as membrane-bound clusters, whereas the melanosomes in keratinocytes of dark skin as in African/American individuals tend to be larger and distributed individually. It has been shown that melanin content, melanin composition and the size of melanosomes in the human epidermis vary considerably with both ethnicity and chronic sun exposure. Objectives To assess quantitatively the distribution pattern of melanosomes that have been transferred to keratinocytes in the photoprotected (volar forearm) skin from normal Asian individuals and to compare these data with those from light-skinned Caucasian and dark-skinned African/American individuals. Methods Electron microscopy was used. Results We have demonstrated that melanosomes within keratinocytes of Asian skin are distributed as a combination of individual and clustered melanosomes with a proportion of 62·6% vs. 37·4%, respectively. This contrasts with dark and light skin keratinocytes where melanosomes are predominantly individual (88·9%) and clustered (84·5%), respectively. Analysis of mean ± SD melanosome size also revealed a progressive variation in size with ethnicity, melanosomes in dark skin being the largest (1·44 ± 0·67 μm[sup 2] × 10[sup -2] ) followed in turn by those in Asian skin (1·36 ± 0·15 μm[sup 2] × 10[sup -2] ) and Caucasian skin (0·94 ± 0·48 μm[sup 2] × 10[sup -2] ). In addition, it was shown that the melanosomes that are individually distributed tend to have a larger size than the clustered melanosomes. Conclusions The present data indicate that there may be a size gradient of melanosomes encompassing the global complexion coloration and that the melanosome distribution in keratinocytes of Asian skin is intermediate between that in light Caucasian and dark African/American skin. SUMMARY Complement C5a is aetiologically linked to inflammatory tissue damage in conditions like septicaemia, immune complex diseases and ischaemia-reperfusion injury. We here describe a monoclonal antibody (mAb), 137–26, that binds to the C5a moiety of human C5 and neutralizes the effects of C5a without interfering with C5 cleavage and the subsequent formation of lytic C5b-9 complex. Mouse anti-human C5 mAbs were generated and the reactivity with C5 and C5a was detected by ELISA and surface plasmon resonance. The inhibition of C5a binding to C5a receptor was studied using a radioligand binding assay. The effects of the antibody on C5a functions were examined using isolated neutrophils and a novel human whole blood model of inflammation. Haemolytic assays were used to study the effect on complement-mediated lysis. mAb 137–26 reacted with both solid- and solution-phase C5 and C5a in a dose-dependent manner with high affinity. The antibody competed C5a binding to C5a receptor and inhibited C5a-mediated chemotaxis of neutrophils. Furthermore, the antibody effectively abrogated complement-dependent E. coli -induced CD11b up-regulation and oxidative burst in neutrophils of human whole blood. mAb 137–26 was more potent than a C5a receptor antagonist and a previously described anti-C5a antibody. mAb 137–26 did not inhibit complement-mediated lysis, nor did it activate complement itself. Together, mAb 137–26 binds both the C5a moiety of native C5 and free C5a, thereby effectively neutralizing the biological effects of C5a. Background Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an inflammatory subepidermal blistering disease associated with autoantibodies that recognize hemidesmosomal proteins. In addition to autoantibodies, the cell-mediated immune reaction is considered to play an important part in blister formation. Objectives To investigate some T-cell activation markers and inflammatory cytokines in the blister fluid and sera of patients with BP. Methods We measured soluble CD4 (sCD4) and soluble CD8 (sCD8), which have been, respectively, associated with CD4 and CD8 T-cell activation. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were also used to quantify the production of the leucocyte chemoattractant interleukin (IL) -8 and of the cytokines IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and tumour necrosis factor-α in the blister fluid and sera of 11 patients with BP. Results The mean ± SD level of sCD4 in patients’ blisters (42·4 ± 25·0 units mL-1) was significantly elevated (P < 0·005) compared with that in their sera (11·2 ± 8·9) and that in the suction blisters of 10 healthy people (11·4 ± 5·4; P < 0·005). Mean ± SD IL-8 concentrations in BP blisters (4683·6 ± 3878·1 pg mL-1) were much higher than those in their sera (17·1 ± 18·9; P < 0·001), and were very significantly elevated (P < 0·005) in comparison with those in suction blisters of healthy persons (512 ± 292). sCD4 levels in BP blisters were inversely related to IL-10 levels (P = 0·03, r2 = 0·85), IL-8 levels were positively related to sCD8 levels (P = 0·01, r2 = 0·54), and IL-1β levels were positively related to sCD8 concentrations (P < 0·005, r2 = 0·65). The prevalence of human T-lymphotropic retrovirus (HTLV) was examined in Taiwan's indigenous populations. In all, 797 healthy subjects in Taiwan including Han Chinese and nine indigenous populations (Ami, Atayal, Bunun, Saisiat, Paiwan, Puyuma, Rukai, Tsuo, and Yami) were examined for the presence of antibodies to HTLV by particle agglutination, indirect immunofluorescence and Western blot test. Two seropositive cases were found in this screening. One Saisiat male and a Han Chinese female were seropositive for HTLV. The Western blot profile indicated the virus was type-1 HTLV. The UVC-induced expression of a cell surface protein which correlates with the induction of tumorigenicity has been observed in human cell hybrids (HeLa × skin fibroblasts). A dose-response curve for the induction of this marker of neoplastic transformation has been obtained. Studies of the repair of potentially lethal and potentially transforming damage indicate a slow repair process which results in enhanced survival and decreased neoplastic transformation over the period 6–24 h post-treatment. The kinetics of this repair process are consistent with previously published work on the kinetics of removal of thymine dimers from UVC-irradiated human skin fibroblasts. During the first few hours post-irradiation (0–6 h) there are fluctuations in transformation frequency while survival remains essentially constant. It is during this period that 6–4 photoproducts are removed from UV-irradiated DNA. It is possible that repair of these lesions may lead to an increase in transformation frequency and have no impact in terms of survival. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A 25-year-old man presented with several prominent subcutaneous masses in the occipital region of the scalp. He had a long history of tinea capitis and tinea corporis infection. Histopathology of the occipital lesions showed mycelial aggregates in the deep dermis and subcutis. Cultures of the excised material and superficial scales grew a fungus identified as Microsporum ferrugineum. We propose the term ‘dermatophyte pseudomycetoma’ to describe this distinctive mycosis. The most conspicuous structural element in the connective tissue of the clam mantle and gill is the amoeboid cell characterized by its large globular oval body and small nucleus, also long cytoplasmic extension and vesicular contents. The Golgi apparatus is very prominent in the amoeboid cell and is characterized by a large number of vesicles associated with its cristernae. Glycogen, .01μ in diameter, and collagen 200 Å in diameter with a 400 Å periodicity, are found within the vacuoles of the amoeboid cells. Extracellular fibrils having a 100 Å diameter and a 200 Å periodicity, are also observed in the connective tissue. From the autoradiographic studies after administration of proline-C, the fibrils are incorporating proline, which is similar to those of collagen fiber of vertebrates. Organic crystals displaying a concentric pattern which become the calcium spherulites of the shell appear to arise primarily from mineralization of the intercellular collagen-like fibrils. The Chloroplasts of are oval bodies which are bounded by a definite outer membrane. Within the chloroplast, a well-defined lamellar system is differentiated into grana and stroma (or intergrana) regions. The grana are made up of stacks of closed double membranes. The stroma lamellae, in some cases, are merely extensions of grana discs which form a sort of continuity between the grana. In many cases, the grana consist of appressed discs, in which the two appressed lamellae from adjacent discs form a single thick lamella. Occasionally, two discs may be in communication. Starch grains and osmiophilic globules are often present in the stroma. The first structures to be seen in the proplastids are the osmiophilic globules, vesicles or starch grains. The vesicles originate as infoldings and bud off from the inner plastid membrane. As the plastids increase in size, the number of lamellae increases. Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between serum hepatitis C virus (HCV)-RNA titer, alanine transaminase (ALT) level, and the degree of liver damage in patients with HCV. Methods: Serum HCV-RNA and ALT were measured with biochemical instruments. Liver biopsies were performed on 30 of 132 patients. Results: No significant correlations of serum HCV-RNA titer were noted with ALT level (r=0.40, P=0.695), the grades of liver necroinflammatory activity (r=0.50, P=0.667), and the stages of liver fibrosis (r=0.20, P=0.80). Serum ALT did not significantly correlate with the stages of liver fibrosis (r=0.40, P=0.60) but did correlate with the grades of liver necroinflammatory activity statistically (r=1.00, P<0.01). Conclusions: Serum HCV-RNA titer had no correlation with the ALT level, and it could not reflect the degree of liver histological damage. The effect of the protease inhibitor antipain (1.25 μg/ml) on the radiation-induced expression of a tumor-associated antigen in human cell hybrids has been investigated. A variety of treatment protocols have been studied where antipain was present before, during and at various times post-irradiation. It was found that antipain suppressed the radiation-induced expression of the tumor-associated antigen in all treatment protocols. The most effective suppression was obtained in those protocols where the protease inhibitor was present for the first 4 h post-irradiation. A possible explanation for this observation is that antipain may inhibit an error-prone DNA repair process. However, it is clear that this is not the only mechanism whereby the inhibitor can exert its effect since suppression was obtained even when antipain was added 10 days post-irradiation, a time when any DNA repair processes would be expected to be over.
