Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) utilizes the photoacoustic effect to record both vascular and functional characteristics of a biological tissue. Photoacoustic signals have typically low amplitude that cannot be read efficiently by data acquisition systems. This necessitates the use of one or more amplifiers. These amplifiers are somewhat bulky (e.g., the ZFL-500LN+, Mini-Circuits, USA, or 351A-3-50-NI, Analog Modules Inc., USA). Here, we describe the fabrication and development process of a transducer with a built-in low-noise preamplifier that is encased within the transducer housing. This new, to the best of our knowledge, design could be advantageous for applications where a compact transducer + preamplifier is required. We demonstrate the performance of this compact detection unit in a laser scanning photoacoustic microscopy system by imaging a rat ear ex vivo and a rat brain vasculature in vivo.

We propose an experimental method for the determination of the transfer function linewidth of a laser amplifier. This technique is based on a transfer function scan using frequency modulation to amplitude modulation (FM-to-AM) temporal modulation measurement as a function of wavelength. Using this method, we show that the output spectrum of a laser amplifier in Q-switch mode is not representative of the transfer function of the amplifier.

Improving the axial resolution by providing wider bandwidth wavelength swept lasers remains an important issue for optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI). Here, we demonstrate a wide tuning range, all-fiber wavelength swept laser at a center wavelength of 1250 nm by combining two ring cavities that share a single Fabry-Perot tunable filter. The two cavities contain semiconductor optical amplifiers with central wavelengths of 1190 nm and 1292 nm, respectively. To avoid disturbing interference effects in the overlapping spectral region, we modulated the amplifiers in order to obtain consecutive wavelength sweeps in the two spectral regions. The two sweeps were fused together in post-processing to achieve a total scanning range of 223 nm, corresponding to 3.3 µm axial resolution in air. We confirm improved image quality and reduced speckle size in tomograms of swine esophagus ex vivo, and human skin and nailbed in vivo.

We report on a high-power, narrow spectral bandwidth 2.907 µm PPMgLN optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a 1.064 µm pulsed Nd:YAG MOPA laser source. Free-running operation of the OPO exhibits maximum average output power of 71.6 W at 2.907 µm with a slope efficiency of 26.7%. Broad 2.907 μm spectral bandwidth of the free-running OPO was suppressed from ~9 nm to less than 0.7 nm by using a VBG as one cavity mirror. The maximum average power was 51.7 W at 2907.55 nm for the spectrum-narrowed OPO, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 22.5%. Continuously tunable ranges of ~8 nm around 2.907 µm had been achieved via adjusting the temperatures of the VBG and PPMgLN accordingly.

Four-mode phase-sensitive (4MPS) process has been employed in a parametric mixer based wavelength multicaster, enhancing the multicasting conversion efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, the 4MPS parametric multicaster is an outstanding candidate for all-optical regeneration, owing to its inherent capabilities to clamp amplitude fluctuations by the saturated parametric effect and to squeeze phase distortions by the phase sensitive process. The investigation in this paper focuses on the 4MPS multicaster operated in the saturation gain regime, including theoretical simulations and experimental demonstrations on amplitude and phase noise regeneration over 20 multicasting signal copies.

We demonstrate high-energy infrared femtosecond pulse generation by a dual-chirped optical parametric amplification (DC-OPA) scheme [Opt. Express19, 7190 (2011)]. By employing a 100 mJ pump laser, a signal pulse energy exceeding 20 mJ at a wavelength of 1.4 μm was achieved before dispersion compensation. A total output energy of 33 mJ was recorded. Under a further energy scaling condition, the signal pulse was compressed to an almost transform-limited duration of 27 fs using a fused silica prism compressor. Since the DC-OPA scheme is efficient and energy scalable, design parameters for obtaining 100 mJ level infrared pulses are presented, which are suitable as driver lasers for the energy scaling of high-order harmonic generation with sub-keV photon energy.

An efficient optical image amplification scheme has been proposed and demonstrated using the quasi-phase-matched optical parametric amplifier. Pumped with the 152 μJ per pulse pump laser at 532 nm, the input weak infrared image at 1064 nm with 3.5 pJ energy is amplified with a 55 dB optical gain using only a 3 mm long MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) crystal. A spatial resolution of 17 lines/mm on the surface of the PPLN crystal is obtained. Further numerical simulation indicates that our scheme enables efficient image enhancement with a long pulsed pumping source, such as nanosecond lasers.

An ultra-flat high-power short-wave infrared super-continuum (SC) source generated in an all-fiber thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) is reported. The SC had a high-spectral flatness with a 10 dB spectral bandwidth spanning from 1970 to 2431 nm and a power spectral density >23  dBm/nm. The output SC beam had Gaussian-shape profiles with a maximum average power of 101.6 W, a SC pulse repetition rate of 2 MHz, and a temporal duration of ∼5  ns. Benefiting from the high duty cycle of the 2 μm seed pulses, the power conversion efficiency from the 793 nm pump light to the maximal SC output power in the TDFA was as high as 35.4%, and the slope efficiency of the TDFA was linearly fitted to be 36.5%. Long-term high-power operation of the SC source showed its outstanding temporal stability. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the results obtained in this Letter represent a new power record for ultra-flat SC in the short-wave infrared region.

A chirped-pulse regenerative amplifier based on a Yb:YVO4 (Yb:YVO) crystal was demonstrated for the first time, to our knowledge. A novel wavelength-independent off-axis technique was used to deliver 26.6 W of pump power with a low quantum defect. It was seeded by means of a 120 fs Yb:YVO4 oscillator. It generates as much as 5.5 W of average output power with chirped pulses and 4.2 W with 200 fs compressed pulses at a 200 kHz repetition rate. A maximum pulse energy of 140 μJ was obtained at pulse repetition frequencies up to 25 kHz at the central wavelength of 1018 nm.

Spatially and temporally separated amplification and subsequent coherent addition of femtosecond pulses is a promising performance-scaling approach for ultrafast laser systems. Herein we demonstrate for the first time the application of this multidimensional scheme in a scalable architecture. Applying actively controlled divided-pulse amplification producing up to four pulse replicas that are amplified in two ytterbium-doped step-index fibers (6 μm core), pulse energies far beyond the damage threshold of the single fiber have been achieved. In this proof-of-principle experiment, high system efficiencies are demonstrated at both high pulse energies (i.e., in case of strong saturation) and high accumulated nonlinear phases.

Stable optical pulse trains are obtained from 1.3-μm and 1.5-μm semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based fiber lasers using passive optical technology. The waveforms depend on SOA currents, and the repetition rates can be tuned by varying the relative length of sub-cavities. The output pulse trains of these SOA-based fiber lasers are stable against intracavity polarization adjustment and environmental perturbation. The optical clock generation is explained in terms of mode competition, self-synchronization, and SOA saturation. Without resorting to any active modulation circuits or devices, the technology used here is simple and may find various applications in the future.

We demonstrate a 0.56-GW, 1-kHz, 4.2-ps, 2.74-mJ deep-ultraviolet (DUV) laser at ∼257.7  nm with a beam propagation factor (M2) of ∼2.54 from a frequency-quadrupled cryogenic multi-stage Yb-doped chirped-pulse amplifier. The frequency quadrupling is achieved using LiB3O5 and β-BaB2O4 crystals for near-infrared (NIR)-to-green and green-to-DUV conversion, respectively. An overall NIR-to-DUV efficiency of ∼10% has been achieved, which is currently limited by the thermal-induced phase mismatching and the DUV-induced degradation of transmittance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest peak-power picosecond DUV source from a diode-pumped solid-state laser operating at kHz repetition rates.

We report a stable, high-power, high-repetition-rate, picosecond ultraviolet (UV) source at 355 nm based on single-pass sum-frequency generation of a mode-locked Yb-fiber laser at 1064 nm in the nonlinear crystal BiB3O6. By performing single-pass second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a 30-mm-long LiB3O5 crystal, up to 9.1 W of average green power at 532 nm is obtained at a single-pass SHG efficiency of 54%. The generated green pulses have a duration of 16.2 ps at a repetition rate of 79.5 MHz, with a passive power stability better than 0.5% rms and a pointing stability <12  μrad over 1 h, in high beam quality. The green radiation is then sum-frequency-mixed with the fundamental in a 10-mm-long BiB3O6 crystal, providing as much as 1.2 W of average UV power, at an infrared-to-UV conversion efficiency of 7.2%, with a passive power stability better than 0.4% rms over 3 h and a pointing stability <45  μrad over 1 h, in TEM00 spatial profile.

We report on the generation of 80-W average power 38-fs laser pulse from a 2-m polarization-maintaining large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber amplifier with high pump absorption coefficient. The pre-chirping management was demonstrated to play a key role on the self-similar amplification. The achieved spectral bandwidth and compressed pulse duration were determined by the interplay between self-phase modulation and finite gain bandwidth. The power scaling in the self-similar fiber amplifier system was eventually limited by the onset of stimulated Raman scattering.

Pump-probe quantum state tomography was applied to the transmission of a coherent state through an In(Ga)As based quantum dot optical amplifier during the interaction with an optical pump pulse. The Wigner function and the statistical moments of the field were extracted and used to determine the degree of population inversion and the signal-to-noise ratio in a sub-picosecond time window.

We report an improvement of three orders of magnitude in the spectral resolution of a recently proposed single-comb terahertz spectroscopy [Opt. Lett.39, 5669 (2014)]. The improvement is achieved by using a femtosecond optical pulse train with a tunable repetition rate. Terahertz comb with tunable spectral line spacing generated by the train is detected via nonlinear mixing with a harmonic of a CW signal from a microwave frequency synthesizer. By applying this technique to the low-pressure gas spectroscopy, we achieved a 100 kHz spectral resolution in measuring separate absorption lines of the rotational manifold of fluoroform (CF 3 H).

We demonstrate a simple, compact and cost-efficient diode laser pumped frequency doubling system at 795 nm in the low power regime. In two configurations, a bow-tie four-mirror ring enhancement cavity with a PPKTP crystal inside and a semi-monolithic PPKTP enhancement cavity, we obtain 397.5nm ultra-violet coherent radiation of 35mW and 47mW respectively with a mode-matched fundamental power of about 110mW, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 32% and 41%. The low loss semi-monolithic cavity leads to the better results. The constructed ultra-violet coherent radiation has good power stability and beam quality, and the system has huge potential in quantum optics and cold atom physics.

Polarization-insensitive (PI) all-optical dual pump-phase transmultiplexing from 2 × 10-GBd OOKs to 10-GBd RZ-QPSK was successfully demonstrated in a birefringent nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (PCF), by utilizing cross-phase modulation (XPM) and the inherent birefringence of the device, for the first time. PI operation was achieved by launching the probe and one pump off-axis while the state of polarization (SOP) of the other pump was randomized. Optimum pump-probe detuning, all within the C-Band, was also utilized to reduce the polarization-induced power fluctuation. Receiver sensitivity penalty at 10 -9 bit-error-rate was < 5.5 dB in PI operation, relative to the FPGA-precoded RZ-DQPSK baseline.

Intensity stability and wavelength correlations of near-infrared supercontinuum generation are studied in all-normal flattened dispersion, all-solid soft glass photonic crystal fiber. We use dispersive Fourier transformation method to measure shot-to-shot resolved spectra under pumping from a sub-picosecond, fiber-based chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system. For the first time to our knowledge, we demonstrate how unconverted radiation from pump, propagating in the photonic cladding of the fiber, improves the measured degree of coherence in the spectrum and influences its wavelength correlation by seeding of multiple four-wave-mixing / Raman scattering components. The presented results suggest a convenient and simple way of stabilizing of shot-to-shot coherence in sub-picosecond fiber laser pumped, normal-dispersion supercontinuum sources by direct, pump-related seeding.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme which can simultaneously realize wavelength-preserving and phase-preserving amplitude noise compression of a 40 Gb/s distorted non-return-to-zero differential-phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signal. In the scheme, two semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are exploited. The first one (SOA1) is used to generate the inverted signal based on SOA's transient cross-phase modulation (T-XPM) effect and the second one (SOA2) to regenerate the distorted NRZ-DPSK signal using SOA's cross-gain compression (XGC) effect. In the experiment, the bit error ratio (BER) measurements show that power penalties of constructive and destructive demodulation at BER of 10 -9 are -1.75 and -1.01 dB, respectively. As the nonlinear effects and the requirements of the two SOAs are completely different, quantum-well (QW) structures has been separately optimized. A complicated theoretical model by combining QW band structure calculation with SOA's dynamic model is exploited to optimize the SOAs, in which both interband effect (carrier density variation) and intraband effect (carrier temperature variation) are taken into account. Regarding SOA1, we choose the tensile strained QW structure and large optical confinement factor to enhance the T-XPM effect. Regarding SOA2, the compressively strained QW structure is selected to reduce the impact of excess phase noise induced by amplitude fluctuations. Exploiting the optimized QW SOAs, better amplitude regeneration performance is demonstrated successfully through numerical simulation. The proposed scheme is intrinsically stable comparing with the interferometer structure and can be integrated on a chip, making it a practical candidate for all-optical amplitude regeneration of high-speed NRZ-DPSK signal.

The performance of cascaded in-line phase-preserving amplitude regeneration using nonlinear amplifying loop mirrors has been studied in numerical simulations. As an example of a spectrally efficient modulation format with two amplitude states and multiple phase states, the regeneration performance of a star-16QAM format, basically an 8PSK format with two amplitude levels, was evaluated. An increased robustness against amplified spontaneous emission and nonlinear phase noise was observed resulting in a significantly increased transmission distance.

The selection of an appropriate pump concept has a major impact on amplifier cost and power consumption. The energy efficiency of different pump concepts is compared for multi core and multi mode active fibers. In preamplifier stages, pump power density requirements derived from full C-band low noise WDM operation result in superior energy efficiency of direct pumping of individual cores in a multi core fiber with single mode pump lasers compared to cladding pumping with uncooled multi mode lasers. Even better energy efficiency is achieved by direct pumping of the core in multi mode active fibers. Complexity of pump signal combiners for direct pumping of multi core fibers can be reduced by deploying integrated components.

Recently, S. Mitryukovskiy et al. presented experimental evidence showing that backward Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) at 337 nm can be obtained from plasma filaments in nitrogen gas pumped by circularly polarized 800 nm femtosecond pulses (Opt. Express, 22, 12750 (2014)). Here, we report that a seed pulse injected in the backward direction can be amplified by ~200 times inside this plasma amplifier. The amplified 337 nm radiation can be either linearly or circularly polarized, dictated by the seeding pulse, which is distinct from the non-polarized nature of the ASE. We performed comprehensive measurements of the spatial profile, optical gain dynamics, and seed pulse energy dependence of this amplification process. These measurements allow us to deduce the pulse duration of the ASE and the amplified 337 nm radiation as well as the corresponding laser intensity inside the plasma amplifier. It indicates that the amplification is largely in the unsaturated regime and that further improvement of laser energy is possible. Moreover, we observed optical gain in plasma created in ambient air. This represents an important step towards future applications exploiting backward lasing for remote atmospheric sensing.

We report the development of a fully fiber-integrated pulsed master oscillator power fibre amplifier (MOPFA) source at 780 nm, producing 3.5 W of average power with 410 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 50 MHz. The source consists of an intensity modulated 1560 nm laser diode amplified in an erbium fiber amplifier chain, followed by a fiber coupled periodically poled lithium niobate crystal module for frequency doubling. The source is then used for generating visible light through four-wave mixing in a length of highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber: 105 mW at 668 nm and 95 mW at 662 nm are obtained, with pump to anti-Stokes conversion slope efficiencies exceeding 6% in both cases.

Spatio-temporal instability of the fundamental mode in Yb(3+)-doped few-mode PM fiber amplifiers with a core diameter of 8.5 μm was registered at 2-30 Watts pump power. Both experimental and theoretical analysis revealed the nonlinear power transformation of the LP(01) fundamental mode into high-order modes. Numerical simulation revealed self-consistent growth of the higher-order mode and traveling electronic index grating accompanying the population grating induced by the mode interference field (due to different polarizability of the excited and unexcited Yb(3+) ions). Experimental results and numerical calculations showed the increase of the instability threshold along with an increase of the signal frequency bandwidth.

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate simultaneous multichannel wavelength multicasting (MWM) and exclusive-OR logic gate multicasting (XOR-LGM) for three 10Gbps non-return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying (NRZ-DPSK) signals in quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifier (QD-SOA) by exploiting the four-wave mixing (FWM) process. No additional pump is needed in the scheme. Through the interaction of the input three 10Gbps DPSK signal lights in QD-SOA, each channel is successfully multicasted to three wavelengths (1-to-3 for each), totally 3-to-9 MWM, and at the same time, three-output XOR-LGM is obtained at three different wavelengths. All the new generated channels are with a power penalty less than 1.2dB at a BER of 10(-9). Degenerate and non-degenerate FWM components are fully used in the experiment for data and logic multicasting.

An optical parametric generator and amplifier producing 15 ps pulses at wavelengths tunable around 2 μm, with energies up to 15 mJ/pulse, has been realized and characterized. The output wavelength is chosen to match a vibrational combination band of water. By measuring the induced birefringence changes we prove that a single pulse is able to completely melt samples of ice in the 10⁻⁶ cm³ volume range, both at room pressure (263 K) and at high pressure (298 K, 1 GPa) in a sapphire anvil cell. This source opens the possibility of studying melting and freezing processes by spectroscopic probes in water or water solutions in a wide range of conditions as found in natural environments.

The two-dimensional single shot transverse coherence of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission of the SPARC&#95;LAB Free-Electron Laser was measured through the statistical analysis of a speckle field produced by heterodyning the radiation beam with a huge number of reference waves, scattered by a suspension of particles. In this paper we report the measurements and the evaluation of the transverse coherence along the SPARC&#95;LAB undulator modules. The measure method was demonstrated to be precise and robust, it does not require any a priori assumptions and can be implemented over a wide range of wavelengths, from the optical radiation to the x-rays.

We report on quadrature demultiplexing of a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal into two cross-polarized binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) signals with negligible penalty at bit-error rate (BER) equal to 10(-9). The all-optical quadrature demultiplexing is achieved using a degenerate vector parametric amplifier operating in phase-insensitive mode. We also propose and demonstrate the use of a novel and simple phase-locked loop (PLL) scheme based on detecting the envelope of one of the signals after demultiplexing in order to achieve stable quadrature decomposition.

Deeply saturated fiber optic parametric amplifiers can have very high performance. While it's a common practice to model the fiber as a longitudinally homogenous entity, we show that the inhomogeneous nature of the fiber leads to a greater performance level which is neither accessible nor accountable using the homogenous model. This indicates that some experimental results cannot be predicted using the homogenous fiber model, even in principle. Consequently, future studies on the performance limit of the system will have to include an inhomogeneous fiber model.

We report a practical 12.5-Gb/s, 12.5-GHz-spaced ultra-dense wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (UD-WDM PON). For the cost-effectiveness, we implement the downstream links by using electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs) in the 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (4PAM) format and PIN receivers, and the upstream links by using reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) modulated in the quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) format and low-cost self-homodyne receivers. To further enhance its cost-effectiveness, we also utilize an optical frequency comb generator, instead of a large number of wavelength-selected lasers, to provide the seed light for these colorless RSOAs. We optimize the operating conditions of the EMLs and RSOAs to maximize the power margins in the presence of the crosstalk arising from closely spaced neighboring channels and the inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by the narrow passband of the cascaded arrayed-waveguide gratings (AWGs) as well as the limited modulation bandwidths of RSOAs. The experimental results show that we can secure the power margins of >2.5 dB for both upstream and downstream links of the proposed UD-WDM PON.

We experimentally demonstrate a few-mode erbium doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) supporting 6 spatial modes with a cladding pumped architecture. Average modal gains are measured to be >20dB between 1534nm-1565nm with a differential modal gain of ~3dB among the mode groups and noise figures of 6-7dB. The cladding pumped FM-EDFA offers a cost effective alternative to core-pumped variant as low cost, high power multimode pumps can be used, and offers performance, scalability and simplicity to FM-EDFA design.

We experimentally demonstrate a few-moded cladding-pumped multi-element fiber amplifier, comprising 4 Er/Yb co-doped signal fibers and 1 multimode pump-delivery fiber all of which are drawn together in a common polymer coating, providing a total spatial path multiplicity of 12. An average WDM signal gain of 18.3 dB and differential modal gain of 1.1 dB were achieved in the spectral range of 1542-1560 nm.

We measure the frequency-resolved noise figure of fiber optical parametric amplifiers both in phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive modes in the frequency range from 0.03 to 3 GHz. We also measure the variation in noise figure due to the degradation in pump optical signal to noise ratio and also as a function of the input signal powers. Noise figure degradation due to stimulated Brillouin scattering is observed.

We have demonstrated ultra-high efficiency amplification in Tm-doped fiber with both core- and cladding-pumped configurations using a resonant tandem-pumping approach. These Tm-doped fiber amplifiers are pumped in-band with a 1908 nm Tm-doped fiber laser and operate at 1993 nm with >90% slope efficiency. In a core-pumped configuration, we have achieved 92.1% slope efficiency and 88.4% optical efficiency at 41 W output power. In a cladding-pumped configuration, we have achieved 123.1 W of output power with 90.4% optical efficiency and a 91.6% slope efficiency. We believe these are the highest optical efficiencies achieved in a Tm-doped fiber amplifier operating in the 2-micron spectral region.

Fiber lasers mode-locked with normal cavity dispersion have recently attracted great attention due to large output pulse energy and femtosecond pulse duration. Here we accurately characterized the timing jitter of normal-dispersion fiber lasers using a balanced cross-correlation method. The timing jitter characterization experiments show that the timing jitter of normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber lasers can be significantly reduced by using narrow band-pass filtering (e.g., 7-nm bandwidth filtering in this work). We further identify that the timing jitter of the fiber laser is confined in a limited range, which is almost independent of cavity dispersion map due to the amplifier-similariton formation by insertion of the narrow bandpass filter. The lowest observed timing jitter reaches 0.57 fs (rms) integrated from 10 kHz to 10 MHz Fourier frequency. The rms relative intensity noise (RIN) is also reduced from 0.37% to 0.02% (integrated from 1 kHz to 5 MHz Fourier frequency) by the insertion of narrow band-pass filter.

We developed a three-dimensional numerical model of Large-Mode-Area chirped pulse fiber amplifiers which includes nonlinear beam propagation in nonuniform multimode waveguides as well as gain spectrum dynamics in quasi-three-level active ions. We used our model in tapered Yb-doped fiber amplifiers and showed that single-mode propagation is maintained along the taper even in the presence of strong Kerr nonlinearity and saturated gain, allowing extraction of up to 3 mJ of output energy in 1 ns pulse. Energy scaling and its limitation as well as the influence of fiber taper bending and core irregularities on the amplifier performance were studied. We also investigated numerically the capabilities for compression and coherent combining of up to 36 perturbed amplifying channels and showed more than 70% combining efficiency, even with up to 11% of high-order modes in individual channels.

All-optical temporal integrator using phase-shifted distributed-feedback semiconductor optical amplifier (DFB-SOA) is investigated. The influences of system parameters on its energy transmittance and integration error are explored in detail. The numerical analysis shows that, enhanced energy transmittance and integration time window can be simultaneously achieved by increased injected current in the vicinity of lasing threshold. We find that the range of input pulse-width with lower integration error is highly sensitive to the injected optical power, due to gain saturation and induced detuning deviation mechanism. The initial frequency detuning should also be carefully chosen to suppress the integration deviation with ideal waveform output.

We demonstrated a 2147 nm silica-based Raman fiber amplifier with output power of 14.3 W directly pumped with a 1963 nm CW thulium-doped all-fiber MOPA. The 1963 nm thulium-doped all-fiber MOPA is seeded with a 2147 nm thulium-doped all-fiber laser at the same time. The Raman Stokes power shift from 1963 nm to 2147 nm is accomplished in a piece of 50 m silica-based highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). The conversion efficiency was 38.5% from 1963 nm to 2147 nm in the HNLF. The output power achieved was only currently limited by available 1963 nm input power and the architecture has significant scaling potential. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest power operation of a Raman fiber amplifier at >2 µm wavelength region.

We report on the accurate measurement of nonlinear ellipse rotation (NER) by means of a phase-sensitive method employing a dual-phase lock-in. The magnitudes and signs of pure refractive electronic nonlinearities of silica and BK7 were determined with this new method using 150 femtosecond (fs) laser pulses at 775 nm. Experimental and theoretical analyses of the NER signal were carried out and the results were compared to those obtained with the Z-scan technique.

In a ground-to-satellite communication system with a preset EDFA, the EDFA's performance will be affected by space environment. With 250 Gy radiation, the EDFA's gain decreases by 2 dB from 19.97 dB at 20 °C. The BER increases by 2.5 orders of magnitude from 10(-10), and increases more with more radiation. The situation aggravates when the temperature rises by 73 °C. The laser's divergence-angle and transmitter radius have optimal values to make the lowest BER and increasing receiver diameter makes lower BERs, so setting these parameters with appropriate values will compensate the degradation caused by EDFA.

We demonstrate an all-fiber tunable Tm/Ho-codoped laser operating in the 2 μm wavelength region. The wavelength tuning range of the Tm/Ho-codoped fiber laser (THFL) with 1-m length of Tm/Ho-codoped fiber (THDF) was from 1727 nm to 2030 nm. Efficient short wavelength operation and ultra-wide wavelength tuning range of 303 nm were both achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the broadest tuning range that has been reported for an all-fiber rare-earth-doped laser to date. By increasing the THDF length to 2 m, the obtainable wavelength of the THFL was further red-shifted to the range from 1768 nm to 2071 nm. The output power of the THFL was scaled up from 1810 nm to 2010 nm by using a stage of Tm/Ho-codoped fiber amplifier (THFA), which exhibited the maximum slope efficiency of 42.6% with output power of 408 mW at 1910 nm.

We report on the direct amplification of 1-ps pulses at 1.3 GHz repetition rate by using a large mode area rod fiber amplifier. An average power of 167 W at 1040 nm with nearly transform-limited duration is generated and converted into 124 W average green power through second harmonic generation. Both infrared and green pulses exhibit diffraction-limited beam quality. A frequency doubling efficiency of 75% and a pump-to-green efficiency of 45% have been achieved, which are to our knowledge the highest reported for fiber laser systems.

Spiral-waveguide amplifiers in erbium-doped aluminum oxide on a silicon wafer are fabricated and characterized. Spirals of several lengths and four different erbium concentrations are studied experimentally and theoretically. A maximum internal net gain of 20 dB in the small-signal-gain regime is measured at the peak emission wavelength of 1532 nm for two sample configurations with waveguide lengths of 12.9 cm and 24.4 cm and concentrations of 1.92 × 10(20) cm(-3) and 0.95 × 10(20) cm(-3), respectively. The noise figures of these samples are reported. Gain saturation as a result of increasing signal power and the temperature dependence of gain are studied.

The investigation of fundamental mechanisms taking place on a femtosecond time scale is enabled by ultrafast pulsed laser sources. Here, the control of pulse duration, center wavelength, and especially the carrier-envelope phase has been shown to be of essential importance for coherent control of high harmonic generation and attosecond physics and, more recently, also for electron photoemission from metallic nanostructures. In this paper we demonstrate the realization of a source of 2-cycle laser pulses tunable between 1.2 and 2.1 μm, and with intrinsic CEP stability. The latter is guaranteed by difference frequency generation between the output pulse trains of two noncollinear optical parametric amplifier stages that share the same CEP variations. The CEP stability is better than 50 mrad over 20 minutes, when averaging over 100 pulses. We demonstrate the good CEP stability by measuring kinetic energy spectra of photoemitted electrons from a single metal nanostructure and by observing a clear variation of the electron yield with the CEP.

A multiplexed multi-longitudinal mode fiber laser sensor system is proposed and demonstrated. By incorporating two matched wavelength division multiplexers (WDMs) and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) into a fiber laser cavity, multiwavelength oscillation is established. Each wavelength corresponding to one channel of WDMs contains multi-longitudinal modes. The multiwavelength output of the laser is directed to another WDM which functions as a demultiplexer. By monitoring the longitudinal mode beat frequency generated at photodetectors following the WDM, the sensing information can be demodulated. Preliminary results for multiplexing two sensors measuring strain and temperature are presented to verify the principle of the system.

We demonstrated widely tunable mid-infrared (6.3-12 μm) optical vortex pulse generation from a ZGP difference frequency generator pumped by a 2 μm optical vortex laser with a cascaded KTP geometry. The mid-infrared vortex output carried the same topological charge as that of the 1 μm pump output without any destruction. A pulse energy of >135 μJ was obtained in the wavelength region of 6.3-7.0 μm.

We report an all-fiber-integrated high-average-power square-shaped nanosecond pulse laser operating at 1068 nm based on the master oscillator power amplifier configuration. The seed source is a passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser with fundamental cavity repetition rate of 1.86 MHz. Output pulses with a square shape can be tuned in pulse width from 271 ps to the nanosecond level. The average output power reaches to 9.21 W after three preamplifiers. Finally, a main amplifier is developed to boost the average output power to 240 W, and the corresponding pulse energy and peak power are ∼ 129.3 μJ and 36 kW, respectively. The efficiency of the main amplifier is ∼ 61.3%, and the beam quality represented by M(2) factors is below 1.3 and 1.2 in the X and Y directions.

In this work we experimentally demonstrate 1 Tbit/s (10 x 100 Gbit/s) unrepeatered transmission over 500.5 km using dual polarization quadrature phase shift keyed (DP-QPSK) format and real-time processing. Such ultra-long distance is enabled by the use of high-performance 100G DP-QPSK transponders (the required optical signal-to-noise ratio is 12 dB), ultra-low loss Corning SMF-28 ULL fiber (the average attenuation of the spools used in this experiment <0.160 dB/km), and optimization of remotely-pumped optical amplifiers. To the best of our knowledge this is the longest unrepeatered 100G-based 1 Tb/s WDM transmission distance reported to date.

We study the elimination of the chirp of narrowband terahertz pulses generated by chirped laser pulse beating using a laser pulse stretcher with two grating pairs that cancel out the third-order spectral phase. First, we show that positively chirped terahertz pulses can be generated using a pulse stretcher with a grating pair and internal lenses. We then combine this with a second grating pair, the spectral phase of which has the opposite sign to that of the first one. By varying the separation of the second grating pair, we experimentally verify that the chirp of the generated terahertz pulses can be eliminated.
