The traditional Korean diet is mainly composed of refined white rice (high amylose, about 35% of energy), which [...], BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maternal serum triglyceride (TG) level is known to be associated with neonatal birth weight. Although Koreans traditionally consume relatively high amounts of grain and grain products, mainly in the form of white rice, and the consumption is positively associated with serum TG levels, no study has investigated the relationship between dietary grain intake, serum TG levels and neonatal birth weight in pregnant women. This study was conducted to identify the association between infant birth weight and maternal intake of grain, as well as serum TG levels. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Subjects were 1011 pregnant women at 12-28 weeks&apos; gestational age and their offspring. Maternal serum TG levels, dietary intake and infant birth weight were measured. RESULTS: Serum TG levels were positively related to neonatal birth weight both at mid-pregnancy (P = 0.0015) and at late pregnancy (P < 0.0001). Such an association only existed in subjects with the highest tertile of grain intake at mid- pregnancy (P = 0.0055) but was observed in all tertiles at late pregnancy (1st P = 0.0186, 2nd P = 0.0146, 3rd P = 0.0099). CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between maternal TG levels and infant birth weight may depend on dietary grain intake and stages of pregnancy in Korean pregnant women. Subjects/Methods: This study investigated whether fruit and vegetable intake modifies the relationship between exposure to PAHs and oxidative stress status during pregnancy. Urinary levels of 2-naphthol and 1-hydroxypyrene (biomarkers of exposure to PAHs), and malondialdehyde (MDA; a biomarker of oxidative stress) were analyzed in 715 pregnant women at 12-28 weeks of gestation. The dietary antioxidant intake during pregnancy was estimated using the 24-h recall method. Urinary 2-naphthol, 1-hydroxypyrene and MDA levels were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. Researchers have suggested that folate intake may help to control the inflammation process. We examined whether folate nutrition modifies the relationship between serum CRP concentration and gestational age at delivery. Subjects/methods: Serum CRP concentrations were analyzed in 815 pregnant women between 12 and 28 weeks of gestation. Dietary intakes were assessed using a 24-h dietary recall. The serum folate and high-sensitivity CRP concentrations were analyzed by radioassay and latex agglutination tests, respectively. Results: Serum CRP concentration was negatively correlated (P< 0.001) with gestational age at delivery. We evaluated the relationship between BMI and the serum folate concentration in 802 and 660 Korean pregnant women in mid- and late pregnancy, respectively, who participated in a multicenter prospective study. There was a significant negative correlation between BMI value and the serum folate concentration at mid- and late pregnancy (P for trend 0.001 and 0.024, respectively). A general linear model confirmed this correlation at both time points after adjusting for gestational age and total folate intake. These findings are important as the serum folate concentration is a rate-limiting factor for placental folate transport to the fetus, and an inadequate folate supply may cause various malformations. Human sterile α motif and HD domain-containing protein 1 (SAMHD1) has deoxyribonucleoside triphosphohydrolase (dNTPase) activity that allows it to defend against human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) infections and regulate the cell cycle. Although SAMHD1 mutations have been identified in various cancer types, their role in cancer is unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate the oncogenic role of SAMHD1 in human clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), particularly as a core molecule promoting cancer cell migration. We found that SAMHD1 participated in endocytosis and lamellipodia formation. Mechanistically, SAMHD1 contributed to the formation of the endosomal complex by binding to cortactin. Thereafter, SAMHD1-stimulated endosomal focal adhesion kinase (FAK) signaling activated Rac1, which promoted lamellipodia formation on the plasma membrane and enhanced the motility of ccRCC cells. Finally, we observed a strong correlation between SAMHD1 expression and the activation of FAK and cortactin in tumor tissues obtained from patients with ccRCC. In brief, these findings reveal that SAMHD1 is an oncogene that plays a pivotal role in ccRCC cell migration through the endosomal FAK-Rac1 signaling pathway., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on suicide remains unclear and might differ according to individuals' socioeconomic characteristics. We aimed to investigate excess suicide attributable to COVID-19 in South Korea, stratified by the outbreak period and individual characteristics. We obtained daily time-series suicide mortality data for January 2017-December 2020 from the Korea National Statistics Office and performed a two-stage interrupted time-series analysis. We estimated excess suicide in 16 regions of Korea using a quasi-Poisson time-series regression model and pooled the region-specific estimates using a mixed-effects multivariate meta-analysis model in the first and second stages, respectively. From February 18 to December 31, 2020, suicide decreased by 9.5% [95% empirical confidence interval (eCI): 3.8%, 15.6%] compared to the number expected from the pre-pandemic period. The decrease in excess suicide risk from the initial pandemic was pronounced during the pandemic's first and third waves. Further, we found that the decrease in suicide was more evident in individuals who were male [11.7% (95% eCI: 5.5%, 18.0%)], middle-aged [13.7% (95% eCI: 7.8%, 19.6%)], highly educated [12.6% (95% eCI: 6.4%, 19.4%)], and married [13.6% (95% eCI: 8.0%, 20.3%)] than in the general population, based on the point estimates. Our results provide timely evidence to establish public health policies for suicide prevention and suggest the prioritization of resource allocation for mental health of individuals based on individual characteristics., (© 2022. We hypothesized that deep neuromuscular blockade (NMB) with low-pressure pneumoperitoneum (PP) would improve respiratory mechanics and reduce biotrauma compared to moderate NMB with high-pressure PP in a steep Trendelenburg position. Seventy-four women undergoing robotic gynecologic surgery were randomly assigned to two equal groups. Moderate NMB group was maintained with a train of four count of 1-2 and PP at 12 mmHg. Deep NMB group was maintained with a post-tetanic count of 1-2 and PP at 8 mmHg. Inflammatory cytokines were measured at baseline, at the end of PP, and 24 h after surgery. Interleukin-6 increased significantly from baseline at the end of PP and 24 h after the surgery in moderate NMB group but not in deep NMB group (P group*time  = 0.036). The peak inspiratory, driving, and mean airway pressures were significantly higher in moderate NMB group than in deep NMB group at 15 min and 60 min after PP (P group*time  = 0.002, 0.003, and 0.048, respectively). In conclusion, deep NMB with low-pressure PP significantly suppressed the increase in interleukin-6 developed after PP, by significantly improving the respiratory mechanics compared to moderate NMB with high-pressure PP during robotic surgery.

The time at which hypertension treatment should be initiated for different age groups and sexes remains controversial. We aimed to determine whether the association between blood pressure (BP) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) varies with age and sex. This study enrolled 327,328 subjects who had not taken antihypertensive medication in the Korean National Health Service-National Health Screening Cohort between 2002 and 2003. Participants were categorized into four groups according to 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association hypertension guideline. Primary outcome was MACE characterized by cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, unstable angina, and stroke. During a 10-year follow-up, a significant increase in MACE risk was observed from the stage 1 hypertension group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.23; 95% CI 1.15-1.32; P < 0.001) in time-varying Cox analysis. This relationship was persistent in subjects aged < 70 years, but increased MACE risk was observed only in the stage 2 hypertension group in ≥ 70 years (HR, 1.52; 95% CI 1.32-1.76, P < 0.001). When categorized as per sex, both men and women showed significant MACE risk from stage 1 hypertension. However, on comparing the sexes after stratifying by age, a significantly increased risk of MACE was shown from stage 1 hypertension in men aged < 50 years, but from stage 2 hypertension in men aged ≥ 50 years. Meanwhile, increased MACE risk was observed from stage 2 hypertension in women aged < 60 years, but from stage 1 hypertension in women aged ≥ 60 years. Thus, young male subjects had higher MACE risk than young female subjects, but this difference gradually decreased with age and there was no difference between sexes in subjects aged ≥ 70 years. Therefore, our results suggest that hypertension treatment initiation may need to be individualized depending on age and sex.

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) might lower the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to assess the association of ICS with the development of CHD in COPD patients by using data from the Korean Nationwide study. Patients who were newly diagnosed with COPD between 2004 and 2013 and who were not diagnosed with coronary heart disease before their diagnosis of COPD were included. Exposure of ICS was incorporated into multivariable Cox regression models using time-dependent methods. To accurately estimate ICS-exposure accumulation, a washout period of 2 years from 2002 to 2003 was applied. Among a total of 4,400 newly diagnosed COPD patients, 771 patients were diagnosed as CHD incident cases during a median follow-up of one year (interquartile range 0.1-2.9). The cumulative dose of ICS was associated with a reduced risk of CHD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.68; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.52-0.89). When the cumulative exposure dose of ICS was divided into quartiles, the aHR for CHD incidence was 0.70 (95% CI, 0.55-0.88) in the highest quartile ICS dose use. The effect of ICS on reducing CHD incidence was pronounced in adults over 55 years, men under 55 years, and former smokers. Our findings demonstrate the role of ICS for the prevention of CHD in COPD patients without a history of CHD. Further research is needed to determine whether a certain amount of ICS exposure in COPD patients is protective against CHD.

We investigated the effects of particulate matter (PM) on mortality in patients diagnosed with asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) or 'pure COPD'. Subjects from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort of Korea, who were aged 40 years or above and had newly diagnosed COPD since 2009 were selected. Finally, 6,313 patients were enrolled and divided into 'pure COPD' and ACO groups. Average PM 10 exposure data were obtained using Kriging interpolation from 2001 to 2013. Hazard ratios(HR) were estimated using a time-varying Cox regression model. Exposure to PM 10 for 1, 3, and 6 months was associated with an increase in non-accidental mortality in the entire COPD group, especially the ACO group. When a stratified analysis of 3-month exposure was performed by sex, the highest HR was found in women with ACO (HR = 1.153; 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.121, 1.185). A stratified analysis according to smoking status showed that ACO patients had the highest HR among never smokers (HR = 1.151; 95% CI; 1.124, 1.178). Average exposure to PM 10 was associated with non-accidental mortality in patients with COPD, especially those diagnosed with ACO. In addition, the adverse effects of PM 10 exposure are more severe in women and never-smokers.

Distinct brain alterations in response to traumatic events may render trauma-exposed individuals either resilient or vulnerable to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study compared regional cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (rCMRglu) among trauma-exposed individuals with current PTSD (PTSD group, n = 61), those without current PTSD (Resilience/Recovery group, n = 26), and trauma-unexposed controls (Control group, n = 54). All participants underwent brain [ 18 F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) scans. Voxel-wise group differences in rCMRglu among the three groups were evaluated. Associations between rCMRglu and both PTSD severity and resilience were examined. The rCMRglu in the right anterior insula and adjacent prefrontal and striatal areas was lower in the PTSD group, while higher in the Resilience/Recovery group, compared to the Control group. In addition, the lower glucose metabolism of these areas was associated with higher severity and less improvement in PTSD symptoms in the PTSD group, while the higher levels of rCMRglu were correlated with stronger resilience in the Resilience/Recovery group. This study suggests distinct roles of the anterior insula in response to trauma between the PTSD and Resilience/Recovery groups. Heightened rCMRglu in the anterior insular regions may reflect an underlying mechanism of resilience against traumatic stress, while reduced rCMRglu may indicate vulnerability to PTSD.

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are chemical alterations that occur in proteins that play critical roles in various cellular functions. Lysine acetylation is an important PTM in eukaryotes, and it is catalyzed by lysine acetyltransferases (KATs). KATs transfer acetyl-coenzyme A to the internal lysine residue of substrate proteins. Arrest defective 1 (ARD1) is a member of the KAT family. Since the identification of its KAT activity 15 years ago, many studies have revealed that diverse cellular proteins are acetylated by ARD1. ARD1-mediated lysine acetylation is a key switch that regulates the enzymatic activities and biological functions of proteins and influences cell biology from development to pathology. In this review, we summarize protein lysine acetylation mediated by ARD1 and describe the biological meanings of this modification.

Hydrogen generation from water using noble metal-free photocatalysts presents a promising platform for renewable and sustainable energy. Copper-based chalcogenides of earth-abundant elements, especially Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS), have recently arisen as a low-cost and environment-friendly material for photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Herein, we report a new heterostructure consisting of CZTS nanoparticles anchored onto a MoS 2 -reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid. Using a facile two-step method, CZTS nanoparticles were in situ grown on the surface of MoS 2 -rGO hybrid, which generated high density of nanoscale interfacial contact between CZTS and MoS 2 -rGO hybrid. The photoexcited electrons of CZTS can be readily transported to MoS 2 through rGO backbone, reducing the electron-hole pair recombination. In photocatalytic hydrogen generation under visible light irradiation, the presence of MoS 2 -rGO hybrids enhanced the hydrogen production rate of CZTS by 320%, which can be attributed to the synergetic effect of increased charge separation by rGO and more catalytically active sites from MoS 2 . Furthermore, this CZTS/MoS 2 -rGO heterostructure showed much higher photocatalytic activity than both Au and Pt nanoparticle-decorated CZTS (Au/CZTS and Pt/CZTS) photocatalysts, indicating the MoS 2 -rGO hybrid is a better co-catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen generation than the precious metal. The CZTS/MoS 2 -rGO system also demonstrated stable photocatalytic activity for a continuous 20 h reaction.

Size at birth and early postnatal growth rates appear to be important determinants of cardiovascular diseases. We examined whether intrauterine growth restriction or the subsequent catch-up postnatal weight gain leads to higher blood pressure in early life to confirm that size at birth and early postnatal growth rates appear to be important determinants of blood pressure changes in early life. Of 407 children born between December 2001 and November 2002 in hospital based-birth cohorts, 102 were followed up at 3 years of age (24.2%) at Ewha Womans University Hospital in Seoul, Korea. At 3 years of age, those who had a low birth weight still belonged in the lower-weight group than the others. The subjects' systolic blood pressure was correlated with their current weight (r=0.41) and weight gain (r=0.39), but not with their birth weight. Those with a higher current weight and higher weight gain based on birth weight (conditional weight gain) had the highest blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure increased by 0.2 mm Hg for every 100-g increase in weight at 3 years and, independently, by 1.5 mm Hg for every 100-unit increase in conditional weight gain. This study suggests that birth weight is not directly associated with blood pressure, but accelerated growth, which occurs mostly in those born with a low birth weight, seems to affect blood pressure in early life.
