The spatial distribution of the ratio of electric field to neutral gas density on a flowing gas, multiple pin-to-plane discharge was measured in a high-power, closed loop laser. The laser was operated at a pressure of 140 torr (1:7:20, CO2, N2, He) with typically a 100 meter/second velocity in the 5 x 8 x 135 centimeter discharge volume. E/N ratios ranged from 2.7 x 10 to the minus 16th power to 1.4 x 10 to the minus 16th power volts/cu cm along the discharge while the electron density ranged from 2.8 x 10 to the 10th power to 1.2 x 10 to the 10th power cm/3.

A closed-cycle, continuous wave, carbon dioxide high power laser has been designed and fabricated to support research for the identification and evaluation of possible high power laser applications. The device is designed to generate up to 70 kW of laser power in annular shape beams from 1 to 9 cm in diameter. Electric discharge, either self sustained or electron beam sustained, is used for excitation. This laser facility provides a versatile tool on which research can be performed to advance the state-of-the-art technology of high power CO2 lasers in such areas as electric excitation, laser chemistry, and quality of output beams. The facility provides a well defined, continuous wave beam for various application experiments, such as propulsion, power conversion, and materials processing.

Performance data from a chemically vapor-deposited-rhenium, niobium thermionic converter are presented. The planar converter has a guard-ringed collector and a nominal fixed spacing of 0.25 mm (10 mils). The data were obtained by using a computerized acquisition system and are available on request to one of the authors on microfiche as individual and composite parametric current, voltage curves. The parameters are the temperatures of the emitter T sub E collector T sub C, and cesium reservoir T sub R. The composite plots have constant T sub E and varying T sub C or T sub R, or both. Current, voltage envelopes having constant T sub E with and without fixed T sub C appear in the present report. The diode was tested at increments between 1600 and 2000 K for the emitter Hohlraum, 800 to 1100 K for the collector, and 540 and 650 K for the reservoir. A total of 312 current, voltage curves were obtained in the present performance evaluation. Current, voltage envelopes from three rhenium emitter converters evaluated in the present program are also given. The data are compared at commom emitter Hohlraum temperatures.

Measurements have been conducted of the effect of the convection of ions and electrons on the discharge characteristics in a large scale laser. The results are presented for one particular distribution of ballast resistance. Values of electric field, current density, input power density, ratio of electric field to neutral gas density (E/N), and electron number density were calculated on the basis of measurements of the discharge properties. In a number of graphs, the E/N ratio, current density, power density, and electron density are plotted as a function of row number (downstream position) with total discharge current and gas velocity as parameters. From the dependence of the current distribution on the total current, it appears that the electron production in the first two rows significantly affects the current flowing in the succeeding rows.

Large quantities of high-temperature air are needed for work with hypersonic flight problems. At temperatures above 2500 degrees Reamur, where conventional heat exchangers have exceeded their material limits, regenerative pebble-bed exchangers may be used with high-temperature refractories. The design of such a heat exchanger requires the use of reliable heat-transfer coefficients for a packed bed. Considerable data are available on the subject, but they spread over two orders of magnitude at any one Reynolds number value. The facility from which the present data were obtained is used at the Lewis Research Center (NASA) for testing air-breathing engine components. The purpose of this work was to obtain heat-transfer data during the initial operation of the bed as a guide to the design of similar equipment. The facility was designed with a conservative estimate of the heat-transfer coefficient, and is shown schematically. Temperatures throughout the packing were measured continuously so that point values of the coefficient might be obtained.

The performance of a fixed-space planar miniature diode (diminiode) with a guarded collector has been mapped using a computerized data acquisition facility. The electrode materials consisted of a tantalum alloy emitter and a Nb-1Zr collector; the electrode gap was 0.254 mm.

Brightness temperatures have been observed from five hohlraums equally spaced on a diameter of a 0.635 cm thermionic emitter surface. The hohlraums are 0.0381 cm in diameter and are 0.114 cm deep. The surface was mounted in a simulated diminiode geometry and was heated from the backside, according to the design, by electron bombardment. Several temperature observations were made at each hohlraum at four different levels of input power. Within experimental error no measurable temperature gradients across the emitter surface were observed at any input power level.
