Inflammatory diseases of the front sinuses, rather common now, run often an atypical complicated cpirse. 102 patients with chronic purulent frontal sinusitis received treatment consisting in irrigation of the paranasal sinuses with ozone-oxygen mixture. A total of 5-7 procedures were given (one course). The control group of 30 patients was treated conventionally. 89% of the irrigated patients recovered faster than the controls.

Efficiency of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) in combination with antioxidants was studied in 36 children aged 1-14 years with neurosensory hypoacusis vs standard treatment. A course of HBO consisted of 10 sessions (1.4 atm) for 40 min. The response was registered in 72.2% patients. It manifested in improvement of sound perception at 5-25 dB. The highest effectiveness was seen in acute neurosensory hypoacusis. Thus, HBO in combination with antioxidants is recommended in combined treatment of neurosensory hypoacusis in children.

The study of the autonomic status of the body in 38 patients with different forms of chronic purulent otitis media (CPOM) has demonstrated that patients with exacerbation or complication of CPOM were for the most part sympathotonics and normotonics. The former had more persistent disease with more frequent recurrences.

The authors report quantitative and qualitative characteristics of nasal and paranasal diseases in 139 pregnant women. Acute purulent maxillary sinusitis was associated with relative T-cell immunodeficiency with unbalance of the regulatory cells. It is concluded that treatment of the above conditions in pregnancy should be conducted without damage to the fetus and include immunocorrection.

Results of electron microscopic examinations of the membraneous cochlea of 6 untreated rats and 36 rats fed with keltane (chloroorganic pesticide) at a 1/20 LD50 dose are presented. Biosamples were withdrawn 30, 60 and 120 days after onset of treatment. In the spiral limb (SL) area, light or dark cells, fibroblasts, fibrillar structures, and blood capillaries were discerned. Light cells included few organelles. Dark cells contained secreting cells located near blood capillaries. Internal spiral notch (ISN) cells had osmiophobic cytoplasm, single organelles, and many microvilli. At an early experimental stage (day 30) light cells, fibroblasts, and blood capillaries proved most sensitive to keltane. They displayed mitochondrial swelling, Golgi organ hyperplasia, intercellular space enlargement, perivascular edema, thickening of the capillary endothelium, and basal membrane swelling. At day 60 edema and ultrastructural changes diminished and dark cells showed signs of enhanced activity. At a late stage (day 120) ultrastructural changes occurred in all SL and ISN organelles. The cytoplasm of some cells showed destructive changes while that of others displayed reparative changes. Ultrastructural changes in the SL and ISN produced a direct effect on toxic lesions of receptor elements of the spiral organ.
