Light and temperature are the driving forces in plant development and growth. Specific photoreceptors provide the ability to sense and interpret light and temperature to regulate growth. Under the limited light conditions in most sports stadiums, natural grasses suffer from light deficiency. Artificial light provided by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is used to increase their growth and adjust their development. Flavonoids like flavonols and anthocyanins are influenced by light conditions and temperature. Increased blue light can elevate the content of these secondary metabolites. Remote measurements of internal parameters using non-destructive methods provided information on their content under different temperature conditions for quality monitoring. This experiment tested flavonoid contents in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) for different blue-to-red light ratios (0.6 and 0.4) and three temperature courses (constant temperature of 4 °C, constant temperature of 12 °C, and temperature switching among 12–8–4–8–12 °C). The results show elevated levels of flavonoids under blue-dominant artificial light as well as increased content under low-temperature (4 °C) conditions. The lack of flavonoids at elevated temperatures (12 °C), especially under red-dominant light, suggests an increased requirement for artificial blue light at increased temperatures. Non-destructive flavonoid determination was suitable for this experiment and can therefore be used for practical sports turf quality monitoring.

In this study, we investigate micrometer-sized NaYF4 crystals double-doped with Yb3+/Er3+ lanthanide ions, designed for temperature-sensing applications. In contrast to previous studies, which focused predominantly on the high-temperature regime, our investigation spans a comprehensive range of both high and ultralow temperatures. We explore the relationship between temperature and the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra in both frequency and time domains. Our findings highlight the strong dependence of these spectral characteristics of lanthanide-doped NaYF4 crystals on temperature. Furthermore, we introduce a dual-mode luminescence temperature measurement technique, leveraging the upconversion emission intensity ratio for both green and red emissions. This study also examines the correlation between temperature sensing, energy level disparities, and thermal coupling in Er3+ ions across various temperature scales. Our research contributes to advancing the understanding and application of lanthanide-doped materials, setting a foundation for future innovations in temperature sensing across diverse fields.

Glass ceramics (GCs) containing PbS quantum dots (QDs) are prepared for temperature sensing. Broadband emissions are detected in the GCs when PbS QDs are precipitated from the glasses, and emissions centers are modulated from 1250 nm to 1960 nm via heat treatments. The emission centers of GCs exhibit blue-shifts when environment temperatures increase from room temperature to 210 °C. Importantly, the shift values of emission centers increase linearly with the test temperature, which is beneficial for applications in temperature sensing. A temperature sensor based on PbS QDs GC is heat-treated at 500 °C for 10 h, possesses the highest sensitivity of 0.378 nm/°C, and exhibits excellent stability and repeatability at high temperatures (up to 210 °C). Moreover, GC fibers are fabricated by using the GCs as the fiber core. The sensitivity of the temperature-sensing sensor of the GC fibers is also demonstrated and the sensitivity is as high as 0.558 nm/°C. The designed PbS QDs GCs provide a significant materials base for the manufacturing of fluorescent temperature sensors and the GC fibers offer significant opportunities for temperature detection in complex, integrated and compact devices.

A sensitive temperature sensor was demonstrated using boron-doped polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) as a Sagnac interferometer (SI). This boron-doped PM-PCF combines both the geometric birefringence introduced by the PCF structure design and the stress birefringence introduced by the boron-doped stress-applying parts. However, we found that the stress birefringence dominates the total birefringence of the sensor by numerical analysis. In the experiments, the fabricated sensor exhibited the highest temperature sensitivity of −1.83 nm/°C within the wide temperature range of 28~76 °C. The temperature sensitivity was mainly derived from the stress birefringence of boron-doped PM-PCF SI. These findings provide some support for the designation of high-precision temperature sensors.

In this paper, a temperature sensing scheme with a miniature MZI structure based on the principle of inter-mode interference is proposed. The sensing structure mainly comprises single mode–coreless–multimode–coreless–single mode fibers (SCMCSs), which have been welded together, with different core diameters. The light beam has been expanded after passing through the coreless optical fiber and is then coupled into a multimode optical fiber. Due to the light passing through the cladding and core mode of the multimode optical fiber with different optical paths, a Mach–Zehnder interferometer is formed. Moreover, due to the thermo-optic and thermal expansion effects of optical fibers, the inter-mode interference spectrum of a multimode fiber shifts when the external temperature changes. Through theoretical analysis, it is found that the change in the length of the sensing fiber during temperature detection has less of an effect on the sensitivity of the sensing structure. During the experiment, temperature changes between 20 and 100 °C are measured at sensing fiber lengths of 1.5 cm, 2.0 cm, 2.5 cm, 3.0 cm, 3.5 cm, and 4.0 cm, respectively, and the corresponding sensitivities are 65.98 pm/°C, 72.70 pm/°C, 67.75 pm/°C, 66.63 pm/°C, 74.80 pm/°C, and 72.07 pm/°C, respectively. All the corresponding correlation coefficients are above 0.9965. The experimental results indicate that in the case of a significant change in the length of the sensing fiber, the sensitivity of the sensing structure changes slightly, which is consistent with the theory that the temperature sensitivity is minimally affected by a change in the length of the sensing fiber. Therefore, the effect of the length on sensitivity in a cascade-based fiber structure is well solved. The sensing scheme has an extensive detection range, small size, good linearity, simple structure, low cost, and high sensitivity. It has a good development prospect in some detection-related application fields.

The unique properties of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are responsible for their diverse applications in photonic materials, medicine, analytics, and energy conversion. In this study, water-soluble rare-earth upconversion nanomaterials emitting green, yellow, and red light under 1550 nm excitation were synthesized. These nanomaterials were then integrated into water-soluble Kevlar nanofibers (KNFs) to fabricate ultra-thin composite films exhibiting favorable mechanical characteristics. The characterization of the products, along with their luminescent, mechanical, and temperature-sensing properties, was examined. The results indicate that the composite material exhibited varying colors based on the doped nanoparticles when subjected to 1550 nm excitation. The composite showed highly sensitive temperature-sensing properties, excellent luminescent characteristics, and superior mechanical strength. This study suggests that KNFs are effective carriers of UCNPs. This study offers a reference for the utilization of rare-earth upconversion in anti-counterfeiting displays, wearable health monitoring, and remote temperature sensing.

Multifunctional sensors have played a crucial role in constructing high-integration electronic networks. Most of the current multifunctional sensors rely on multiple materials to simultaneously detect different physical stimuli. Here, we demonstrate the large piezo-pyroelectric effect in ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) single crystals for simultaneous pressure and temperature sensing. The outstanding piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties of PMN-PT result in rapid response speed and high sensitivity, with values of 46 ms and 28.4 nA kPa−1 for pressure sensing, and 1.98 s and 94.66 nC °C−1 for temperature detection, respectively. By leveraging the distinct differences in the response speed of piezoelectric and pyroelectric responses, the piezo-pyroelectric effect of PMN-PT can effectively detect pressure and temperature from mixed-force thermal stimuli, which enables a robotic hand for stimuli classification. With appealing multifunctionality, fast speed, high sensitivity, and compact structure, the proposed self-powered bimodal sensor therefore holds significant potential for high-performance artificial perception.

The combined effects of temperature (from −80 °C to +80 °C) and 100 kV X-ray exposure (up to 108 kGy(SiO2)) on the physical properties of Brillouin scattering and losses in three differently doped silica-based optical fibers, with varying dopant type and concentration (4 wt%(Ge), 10 wt%(Ge) and 1 wt%(F)), are experimentally studied in this work. The dependencies of Brillouin Frequency Shifts (BFS), Radiation-Induced Attenuation (RIA) levels, Brillouin gain attenuation, Brillouin frequency temperature (CT) and strain (Cε) sensitivity coefficients are studied under X-rays in a wide temperature range [−80 °C; +80 °C]. Brillouin sensing capabilities are investigated using a Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analyzer (BOTDA), and several properties are reported: (i) similar behavior of the Brillouin gain amplitude decrease with the increase in the RIA; (ii) the F-doped and heavily Ge-doped fibers do not exhibit a temperature dependence under radiation for their responses in Brillouin gain losses. Increasing Ge dopant concentration also reduces the irradiation temperature effect on RIA. In addition, Radiation-Induced Brillouin Frequency Shift (RI-BFS) manifests a slightly different behavior for lower temperatures than RIA, presenting an opportunity for a comprehensive understanding of RI-BFS origins. Related temperature and strain sensors are designed for harsh environments over an extended irradiation temperature range, which is useful for a wide range of applications.

Here, we document a D-type double open-loop channel floor plasmon resonance (SPR) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for temperature sensing. The grooves are designed on the polished surfaces of the pinnacle and backside of the PCF and covered with a gold (Au) film, and stomata are distributed around the PCF core in a progressive, periodic arrangement. Two air holes between the Au membrane and the PCF core are designed to shape a leakage window, which no longer solely averts the outward diffusion of Y-polarized (Y-POL) core mode energy, but also sets off its coupling with the Au movie from the leakage window. This SPR-PCF sensor uses the temperature-sensitive property of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to reap the motive of temperature sensing. Our lookup effects point out that these SPR-PCF sensors have a temperature sensitivity of up to 3757 pm/°C when the temperature varies from 5 °C to 45 °C. In addition, the maximum refractive index sensitivity (RIS) of the SPR-PCF sensor is as excessive as 4847 nm/RIU. These proposed SPR-PCF temperature sensors have an easy nanostructure and proper sensing performance, which now not solely improve the overall sensing performance of small-diameter fiber optic temperature sensors, but also have vast application prospects in geo-logical exploration, biological monitoring, and meteorological prediction due to their remarkable RIS and exclusive nanostructure.

Chiral BIC can reach ultrahigh quality factors (Q-factor) based on its asymmetry, with broken mirror symmetries and in-plane inversion. Only by in-plane structural perturbation can chiral quasi-BIC (q-BIC) appear, so it is much more realizable and reasonable for the manufacturers in practical productions and fabrications considering the technology and means that are available. In this paper, we design a new dielectric metasurface employing H-shaped silica meta-atoms in the lattice, which is symmetrical in structure, obtaining chiral BIC with ultrahigh Q-factor (exceeding 105). In this process, we change the length of the limbs of the structure to observe the specific BICs. Previous scholars have focused on near-infrared-wavelength bands, while we concentrate on the terahertz wavelength band (0.8–1 THz). We found that there is more than one BIC, thus realizing multiple BICs in the same structure; all of them exhibit excellent circular dichroism (CD) (the maximum value of CD is up to 0.8127) for reflectance and transmittance, which provides significant and unique guidance for the design of multi-sensors. Meanwhile, we performed temperature sensing with chiral BIC; the sensitivity for temperature sensing can reach 13.5 nm/°C, which exhibits high accuracy in measuring temperature. As a consequence, the result proposed in this study will make some contributions to advanced optical imaging, chiral sensors with high frequency and spectral resolution, optical monitoring of environmental water quality, multiple sensors, temperature sensing, biosensing, substance inspection and ambient monitoring and other relevant optical applications.

Metal-organic frameworks are of great interest to scientists from various fields. This group also includes organic–inorganic hybrids with a perovskite structure. Recently their structural, phonon, and luminescent properties have been paid much attention. However, a new way of characterization of these materials has become luminescence thermometry. Herein, we report the structure, luminescence, and temperature detection ability of formate organic–inorganic perovskite [C(NH2)3]M(HCOO)3 (Mg2+, Mn2+, Zn2+) doped with Cr3+ ions. Crystal field strength (Dq/B) and Racah parameters were determined based on diffuse reflectance spectra. It was shown that Cr3+ ions are positioned in the intermediate crystal field or close to it with a Dq/B range of 2.29–2.41. The co-existence of the spin-forbidden and spin-allowed transitions of Cr3+ ions enable the proposal of an approach for remote readout of the temperature. The relative sensitivity (Sr) can be easily modified by sample composition and Cr3+ ions concentration. The luminescent thermometer based on the 2E/4T2g transitions has the relative sensitivity Sr of 2.08%K−1 at 90 K for [C(NH2)3]Mg(HCOO)3: 1% Cr3+ and decrease to 1.20%K−1 at 100 K and 1.08%K−1 at 90 K for Mn2+ and Zn2+ analogs, respectively.

A novel fluorescent probe (C460@Tb-MOFs) was designed and synthesized by encapsulating the fluorescent dye 7-diethylamino-4-methyl coumarin (C460) into a terbium-based metal–organic framework using a simple ultrasonic impregnation method. It is impressive that this dye-modified metal–organic framework can specifically detect styrene and temperature upon luminescence quenching. The sensing platform of this material exhibits great selectivity, fast response, and good cyclability toward styrene detection. It is worth mentioning that the sensing process undergoes a distinct color change from blue to colorless, providing conditions for the accurate visual detection of styrene liquid and gas. The significant fluorescence quenching mechanism of styrene toward C460@Tb-MOFs is explored in detail. Moreover, the dye-modified metal–organic framework can also achieve temperature sensing from 298 to 498 K with high relative sensitivity at 498 K. The preparation of functionalized MOF composites with fluorescent dyes provides an effective strategy for the construction of sensors for multifunctional applications.

As one of the most critical parameters to evaluate the quality and performance of mobile phones, real-time temperature monitoring of mobile phones’ integrated chips is vital in the electronics industry. Although several different strategies for the measurement of chips’ surface temperature have been proposed in recent years, distributed temperature monitoring with high spatial resolution is still a hot issue with an urgent need to be solved. In this work, a fluorescent film material with photothermal properties containing thermosensitive upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is fabricated for the monitoring of the chips’ surface temperature. The presented fluorescent films have thicknesses ranging from 23 to 90 μm and are both flexible and elastic. Using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, the temperature-sensing properties of these fluorescent films are investigated. The maximum sensitivity of the fluorescent film was measured to be 1.43% K−1 at 299 K. By testing the temperature at different positions of the optical film, distributed temperature monitoring with a high spatial resolution down to 10 μm on the chip surface was successfully achieved. It is worth mentioning that the film maintained stable performance even under pull stretching up to 100%. The correctness of the method is verified by taking infrared images of the chip surface with an infrared camera. These results demonstrate that the as-prepared optical film is a promising anti-deformation material for monitoring temperature with high spatial resolution on-chip surfaces.

Bismuth-halide-based inorganic-organic hybrid materials (Bi-IOHMs) are desirable in luminescence-related applications due to their advantages such as low toxicity and chemical stability. Herein, two Bi-IOHMs of [Bpy][BiCl4(Phen)] (1, Bpy = N-butylpyridinium, Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) and [PP14][BiCl4(Phen)]·0.25H2O (2, PP14 = N-butyl-N-methylpiperidinium), containing different ionic liquid cations and same anionic units, have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group of P21/c and P21, respectively. They both possess zero-dimensional ionic structures and exhibit phosphorescence at room temperature upon excitation of UV light (375 nm for 1, 390 nm for 2), with microsecond lifetime (24.13 μs for 1 and 95.37 μs for 2). Hirshfeld surface analysis has been utilized to visually exhibit the different packing motifs and intermolecular interactions in 1 and 2. The variation in ionic liquids makes compound 2 have a more rigid supramolecular structure than 1, resulting in a significant enhancement in photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), that is, 0.68% for 1 and 33.24% for 2. In addition, the ratio of the emission intensities for compounds 1 and 2 shows a correlation with temperature. This work provides new insight into luminescence enhancement and temperature sensing applications involving Bi-IOHMs.

Based on the transfer-matrix method, we theoretically explore the transmission and reflection properties of light waves in a one-dimensional defective photonic crystal composed of superconductor (HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ) and semiconductor (GaAs) layers. The whole system is centrosymmetric and can generate a defect transmission peak in the photonic band gap. We study the effect of the temperature on the defect mode. Results obtained show that the defect mode shifts to the lower frequency regions as the value of the environmental temperature increases, and the resonance of the defect mode can be strengthened further as the number of periods increases. In addition, our findings reveal that the central wavelength of the defect mode increases with the increase in the environmental temperature and it presents a nearly linear relationship between the central wavelength of the defect mode and the temperature in cryogenic environments. Therefore, we can use the temperature response of the defect mode to detect the temperature. It is hoped that this study has potential applications for the development of cryogenic sensors with high sensitivity.

A novel method for ultra-sensitive and ultra-fast temperature sensing has been successfully implemented by cascading Saganc rings to generate the Vernier effect and doing the same dispersive fibers to achieve the optical time-stretching effect. This is different from the traditional point fiber sensor demodulated by optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) whose demodulation speed is usually at the second level. The designed system maps the wavelength domain to the time domain through the dispersive fiber, which can realize the ultra-fast temperature monitoring at the nanosecond level. The cascaded Sagnac ring is composed of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) which is significantly affected by the thermal-optical coefficient. When the temperature changes, the variation is as high as −6.228 nm/°C, which is 8.5 times higher than the sensitivity based on the single Sagnac ring system. Furthermore, through the optical time stretching scheme, the corresponding response sensitivity is increased from 0.997 ns/°C to 7.333 ns/°C, and the magnification is increased 7.4 times with a response speed of 50 MHz.

High precision temperature measurements are a transversal need in a wide area of physical experiments. Space-borne gravitational wave detectors are a particularly challenging case, requiring both high precision and high stability in temperature measurement. In this contribution, we present a design able to reach 1 μK/Hz in most of the measuring band down to 1 mHz, and reaching 20 μK/Hz at 0.1 mHz. The scheme is based on resistive sensors in a Wheatstone bridge configuration which is AC modulated to minimize the 1/f noise. As a part of our study, we include the design of a test bench able to guarantee the high stability environment required for measurements. We show experimental results characterising both the test bench and the read-out, and discuss potential noise sources that may limit our measurement.

In this article, a refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance, which is generated by the coupling of a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide structure and a toroidal cavity with a built-in elliptical ring (TCER) structure, is presented. The finite element method (FEM) was employed to analyze the propagation characteristics of the integral structure. The effects of refractive index and different geometric parameters of the structure on the sensing characteristics were evaluated. The maximum sensitivity was 2220 nm/RIU with a figure of merit (FOM) of 58.7, which is the best performance level that the designed structure could achieve. Moreover, due to its high sensitivity and simple structure, the refractive index sensor can be applied in the field of temperature detection, and its sensitivity is calculated to be 1.187 nm/℃.

In the construction and machinery industry, heat is a major factor causing damage and destruction. The safety and efficiency of most machines and structures are greatly affected by temperature, and temperature management and control are essential. In this study, a carbon nanotube (CNT) based temperature sensing coating that can be applied to machines and structures having various structural types was fabricated, and characteristics analysis and temperature sensing performance were evaluated. The surface coating, which detects temperature through resistance change is made of a nanocomposite composed of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and epoxy (EP). We investigated the electrical properties by CNT concentration and temperature sensing performance of CNT/EP coating against static and cyclic temperatures. In addition, the applicability of the CNT/EP coating was investigated through a partially heating and cooling experiment. As a result of the experiment, the CNT/EP coating showed higher electrical conductivity as the CNT concentration increased. In addition, the CNT/EP coating exhibits high sensing performance in the high and sub−zero temperature ranges with a negative temperature coefficient of resistance. Therefore, the proposed CNT/EP coatings are promising for use as multi-functional coating materials for the detection of high and freezing temperatures.

High-performance temperature sensing is a key technique in modern Internet of Things. However, it is hard to attain a high precision while achieving a compact size for wireless sensing. Recently, metamaterials have been proposed to design a microwave, wireless temperature sensor, but precision is still an unsolved problem. By combining the high-quality factor (Q-factor) feature of a EIT-like metamaterial unit and the large temperature-sensing sensitivity performance of liquid metals, this paper designs and experimentally investigates an Hg-EIT-like metamaterial unit block for high figure-of-merit (FOM) temperature-sensing applications. A measured FOM of about 0.68 is realized, which is larger than most of the reported metamaterial-inspired temperature sensors.

In electrohydrostatic drive actuators, there is a demand for temperature and pressure monitoring in complex environments. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) has become a promising sensor for measuring temperature and pressure. However, there is a cross-sensitivity between temperature and pressure. A gold-plated FBG is proposed and manufactured, and an FBG is used as a reference grating to form a parallel all-fiber sensing system, which can realize the simultaneous measurement of pressure and temperature. Based on the simulation software, the mechanical distribution of the pressure diaphragm is analyzed, and the fixation scheme of the sensor is determined. Using the demodulator to monitor the changes in the reflectance spectrum in real-time, the pressure and ambient temperature applied to the sensor are measured. The experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of gold-plated FBG is 3 times that of quartz FBG, which can effectively distinguish the temperature changes. The pressure response sensitivity of gold-plated FBG is 0.3 nm/MPa, which is same as the quartz FBG. Through the sensitivity matrix equation, the temperature and pressure dual-parameter sensing measurement is realized. The accuracy of the temperature and pressure measurement is 97.7% and 99.0%, and the corresponding response rates are 2.7 ms/°C and 2 ms/MPa, respectively. The sensor has a simple structure and high sensitivity, and it is promising to be applied in health monitoring in complex environments with a high temperature and high pressure.

To reduce the loss of the metal–insulator–metal waveguide structure in the near-infrared region, a plasmonic nanosensor structure based on a racetrack resonant cavity is proposed herein. Through finite element simulation, the transmission spectra of the sensor under different size parameters were analyzed, and its influence on the sensing characteristics of the system was examined. The analysis results show that the structure can excite the double Fano resonance, which has a distinctive dependence on the size parameters of the sensor. The position and line shape of the resonance peak can be adjusted by changing the key parameters. In addition, the sensor has a higher sensitivity, which can reach 1503.7 nm/RIU when being used in refractive index sensing; the figure of merit is 26.8, and it can reach 0.75 nm/°C when it is used in temperature sensing. This structure can be used in optical integrated circuits, especially high-sensitivity nanosensors.

Antiresonant hollow core fibers (ARHCFs) have gained some attention due to their notoriously attractive characteristics on managing optical properties. In this work, an inline optical fiber sensor based on a hollow square core fiber (HSCF) is proposed. The sensor presents double antiresonance (AR), namely an internal AR and an external AR. The sensor was designed in a transmission configuration, where the sensing head was spliced between two single mode fibers (SMFs). A simulation was carried out to predict the behaviors of both resonances, and revealed a good agreement with the experimental observations and the theoretical model. The HSCF sensor presented curvature sensitivities of −0.22 nm/m−1 and −0.90 nm/m−1, in a curvature range of 0 m−1 to 1.87 m−1, and temperature sensitivities of 21.7 pm/°C and 16.6 pm/°C, in a temperature range of 50 °C to 500 °C, regarding the external resonance and internal resonance, respectively. The proposed sensor is promising for the implementation of several applications where simultaneous measurement of curvature and temperature are required.

Dissolved-oxygen concentration and temperature are amongst the crucial parameters required for the precise monitoring of biological and biomedical systems. A novel hybrid nanocomposite probe for real-time and contactless measurement of both dissolved-oxygen concentration and temperature, based on a combination of downconverting phosphorescent molecules of platinum octaethylporphyrin and lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles immobilized in a host of polystyrene, is here introduced. Chlorella algae are employed here as a model to demonstrate the hybrid nanophotonic sensor’s capability to monitor the aforementioned two parameters during the photosynthesis process, since these are among the parameters impacting their production efficiency. These algae have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential to be used for diverse applications such as biofuel production; however, feasibility studies on their economic production are still underway.

Nanocrystalline nickel manganite (NiMn2O4) powder with a pure cubic spinel phase structure was synthesized via sol-gel combustion and characterized with XRD, FT-IR, XPS and SEM. The powder was mixed with sodium alginate gel to form a nano-biocomposite gel, dried at room temperature to form a thick film and characterized with FT-IR and SEM. DC resistance and AC impedance of sensor test structures obtained by drop casting the nano-biocomposite gel onto test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on an alumina substrate were measured in the temperature range of 20–50 °C at a constant relative humidity (RH) of 50% and at room temperature (25 °C) in the RH range of 40–90%. The material constant obtained from the measured decrease in resistance with temperature was determined to be 4523 K, while the temperature sensitivity at room temperature (25 °C) was −5.09%/K. Analysis of the complex impedance plots showed a dominant influence of grains. The decrease in complex impedance with increase in temperature confirmed the negative temperature coefficient effect. The grain resistance and grain relaxation frequency were determined using an equivalent circuit. The activation energy for conduction was determined as 0.45 eV from the temperature dependence of the grain resistance according to the small polaron hopping model, while the activation energy for relaxation was 0.43 eV determined from the Arrhenius dependence of the grain relaxation frequency on temperature.

The unique properties of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are responsible for their diverse applications in photonic materials, medicine, analytics, and energy conversion. In this study, water-soluble rare-earth upconversion nanomaterials emitting green, yellow, and red light under 1550 nm excitation were synthesized. These nanomaterials were then integrated into water-soluble Kevlar nanofibers (KNFs) to fabricate ultra-thin composite films exhibiting favorable mechanical characteristics. The characterization of the products, along with their luminescent, mechanical, and temperature-sensing properties, was examined. The results indicate that the composite material exhibited varying colors based on the doped nanoparticles when subjected to 1550 nm excitation. The composite showed highly sensitive temperature-sensing properties, excellent luminescent characteristics, and superior mechanical strength. This study suggests that KNFs are effective carriers of UCNPs. This study offers a reference for the utilization of rare-earth upconversion in anti-counterfeiting displays, wearable health monitoring, and remote temperature sensing.

Highly sensitive and flexible composite sensors with pressure and temperature sensing abilities are of great importance in human motion monitoring, robotic skins, and automobile seats when checking the boarding status. Several studies have been conducted to improve the temperature-pressure sensitivity; however, they require a complex fabrication process for micro-nanostructures, which are material-dependent. Therefore, there is a need to develop the structural designs to improve the sensing abilities. Herein, we demonstrate a flexible composite with an enhanced pressure and temperature sensing performance. Its structural design consists of a multilayered composite construction with an elastic modulus gradient. Controlled stress concentration and distribution induced by a micropatterned structure between the layers improves its pressure and temperature sensing performance. The proposed composite sensor can monitor a wide range of pressure and temperature stimuli and also has potential applications as an automotive seat sensor for simultaneous human temperature detection and occupant weight sensing.

Nickel manganite nanocrystalline fibers were obtained by electrospinning and subsequent calcination at 400 °C. As-spun fibers were characterized by TG/DTA, Scanning Electron Microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of nickel manganite with a cubic spinel structure, while N2 physisorption at 77 K enabled determination of the BET specific surface area as 25.3 m2/g and (BJH) mesopore volume as 21.5 m2/g. The material constant (B) of the nanocrystalline nickel manganite fibers applied by drop-casting on test interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate, dried at room temperature, was determined as 4379 K in the 20–50 °C temperature range and a temperature sensitivity of −4.95%/K at room temperature (25 °C). The change of impedance with relative humidity was monitored at 25 and 50 °C for a relative humidity (RH) change of 40 to 90% in the 42 Hzπ1 MHz frequency range. At 100 Hz and 25 °C, the sensitivity of 327.36 ± 80.12 kΩ/%RH was determined, showing that nickel manganite obtained by electrospinning has potential as a multifunctional material for combined humidity and temperature sensing.

In this paper, we propose an in-fiber Mach–Zehnder temperature sensor based on a dual-core fiber with an eccentric core and a central core. The latter one is beside a fluidic channel embedded in the fiber. The effective refractive index of the guided mode in the central core could be influenced by the glycerol–water solution filled in the fluidic channel. Thus, the transmitted spectrum of the sensor is shifted as a function of temperature. By monitoring the selected spectral dip shifts, an experimental sensitivity of 2.77 nm/°C is obtained in the range of 25 to 40 °C for a solution length of 15 cm. To further improve the temperature sensitivity, the solution length is increased up to 29.5 cm, and a higher sensitivity of 5.69 nm/°C is achieved in the same temperature range. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical ones. The proposed sensor has good robustness and stability, which makes it promising for applications of high precision temperature monitoring.

In this paper, a novel high-sensitivity temperature sensor with two sensing regions based on optical microfiber coupler interferometer (OMCI) for ocean application is proposed. The OMCI sensor is constructed by connecting Faraday mirrors to the two ports of the microfiber coupler respectively. Its sensing characteristics analysis and experimental test are conducted. Using a broad-spectrum light source as input light, temperature sensor demodulation can be implemented by tracking the drift of the characteristic wavelength (dip wavelength or peak wavelength) of the reflection spectrum. Experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of the OMCI sensor can reach 1007.4 pm/°C and the detection dynamic range up to 17.6 °C. Besides, due to the two sensing regions in OMCI, self-calibration of seawater temperature sensing and optimization of multi-parameter cross-sensitive demodulation are performed by affecting the non-equal-arm interferometer through a specific package design of the external environment. The sensor has the advantages of high sensitivity, large dynamic range, small size, easy to manufacture, which will play an important role in the practical application of marine environment monitoring.

Herein, a nanosensor structure is proposed, which comprises metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with stub and circular ring cavity with a stub (CRCS). The phenomenon of Fano resonance appears in the transmission spectrum, which is formed by interaction between the narrowband mode of CRCS and broadband mode of stub on bus waveguide. The influence of geometric asymmetry on mode splitting of Fano resonance was discussed. The mode splitting of Fano resonance can vastly improve figure of merit (FOM) with a sight decrease of sensitivity. The best performance of the refractive-index nanosensor is attained, which is 1420 nm/RIU with a high FOM of 76.76. Additionally, the application of designed structure on temperature sensing was investigated, which has sensitivity of 0.8 nm/°C. The proposed structure also possesses potential applications on other on-chip nanosensors.

Upconversion luminescence properties from the emissions of Stark sublevels of Er3+ were investigated in Er3+-Yb3+-Mo6+-codoped TiO2 phosphors in this study. According to the energy levels split from Er3+, green and red emissions from the transitions of four coupled energy levels, 2H11/2(I)/2H11/2(II), 4S3/2(I)/4S3/2(II), 4F9/2(I)/4F9/2(II), and 2H11/2(I) + 2H11/2(II)/4S3/2(I) + 4S3/2(II), were observed under 976 nm laser diode excitation. By utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, temperature-dependent upconversion emissions from these four coupled energy levels were analyzed at length. The optical temperature-sensing behaviors of sensing sensitivity, measurement error, and operating temperature for the four coupled energy levels are discussed, all of which are closely related to the energy gap of the coupled energy levels, FIR value, and luminescence intensity. Experimental results suggest that Er3+-Yb3+-Mo6+-codoped TiO2 phosphor with four pairs of energy levels coupled by Stark sublevels provides a new and effective route to realize multiple optical temperature-sensing through a wide range of temperatures in an independent system.

Development of stretchable electronics has been driven by key applications such as electronics skin for robotic or prosthetic. Mimicking skin functionalities imposes at a minimal level: stretchability, pressure, and temperature sensing capabilities. While the research on pressure sensors for artificial skin is extensive, stretchable temperature sensors remain less explored. In this work, a stretchable temperature and infrared sensor has been developed on a polydimethylsiloxane substrate. The sensor is based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) as a pyroelectric material. This material is sandwiched between two electrodes. The first one consists of aluminium serpentines, covered by gold in order to get electrical contact and maximum stretchability. The second one is based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) that has shown good electrical compatibility with PVDF-TrFE and provides the stretchability of the top electrode. Without poling the PVDF-TrFE, sensor has shown a sensitivity of around 7 pF.°C−1 up to 35% strain without any change in its behaviour. Then, taking advantage on infrared absorption of PEDOT:PSS, a poled device has shown a pyroelectric peak of 13 mV to an infrared illumination of 5 mW at 830 nm. This stretchable device valuably allows an electronic skin (e-skin) use for contact and more importantly non-contact thermal sensing.

An intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometeric sensor based on a microfiber has been demonstrated. The micro-size suspended core is created by chemical etching a photonics crystal fiber, of which the cladding has a micrometer-spaced, hexagonal array of air holes. The sensing head is fabricated by chemical etching a short section of photonics crystal fiber spliced with a single mode fiber. The temperature sensing characteristic of the interferometer has also been demonstrated and a sensitivity 14.3 pm/°C is obtained.

This paper presents the use of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology for the real-time remote monitoring of body temperature, while an associated program can determine the location of the body carrying the respective sensor. The RFID chip’s internal integrated temperature sensor is used for both the human-body temperature detection and as a measurement device, while using radio-frequency communication to broadcast the temperature information. The adopted RFID location technology makes use of reference tags together with a nearest neighbor localization algorithm and a multiple-antenna time-division multiplexing location system. A graphical user interface (GUI) was developed for collecting temperature and location data for the data fusion by using RFID protocols. With a puppy as test object, temperature detection and localization experiments were carried out. The measured results show that the applied method, when using a mercury thermometer for comparison in terms of measuring the temperature of the dog, has a good consistency, with an average temperature error of 0.283 °C. When using the associated program over the area of 12.25 m2, the average location error is of 0.461 m, which verifies the feasibility of the sensor-carrier location by using the proposed program.

The classical approach to non-linear regression in physics is to take a mathematical model describing the functional dependence of the dependent variable from a set of independent variables, and then using non-linear fitting algorithms, extract the parameters used in the modeling. Particularly challenging are real systems, characterized by several additional influencing factors related to specific components, like electronics or optical parts. In such cases, to make the model reproduce the data, empirically determined terms are built in the models to compensate for the difficulty of modeling things that are, by construction, difficult to model. A new approach to solve this issue is to use neural networks, particularly feed-forward architectures with a sufficient number of hidden layers and an appropriate number of output neurons, each responsible for predicting the desired variables. Unfortunately, feed-forward neural networks (FFNNs) usually perform less efficiently when applied to multi-dimensional regression problems, that is when they are required to predict simultaneously multiple variables that depend from the input dataset in fundamentally different ways. To address this problem, we propose multi-task learning (MTL) architectures. These are characterized by multiple branches of task-specific layers, which have as input the output of a common set of layers. To demonstrate the power of this approach for multi-dimensional regression, the method is applied to luminescence sensing. Here, the MTL architecture allows predicting multiple parameters, the oxygen concentration and temperature, from a single set of measurements.

A simple hetero-core optical fiber (MMF-NCF-MMF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing structure was proposed. The SPR spectral sensitivity, full width of half peak (FWHM), valley depth (VD), and figure of merit (FOM) were defined to evaluate the sensing performance comprehensively. The effect of gold film thickness on the refractive index and temperature sensing performance was studied experimentally. The optimum gold film thickness was found. The maximum sensitivities for refractive index and temperature measurement were obtained to be 2933.25 nm/RIU and −0.91973 nm/°C, respectively. The experimental results are helpful to design the SPR structure with improved sensing performance. The proposed SPR sensing structure has the advantages of simple structure, easy implementation, and good robustness, which implies a broad application prospect.

A combined sensor to simultaneously measure strain, vibration, and temperature has been developed. The sensor is composed of two Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and a vibration gainer. One FBG is used to measure strain, while the other measures vibration and temperature. The gainer has a mass block which is used to increase its sensitivity to vibration. The main beam of the vibration gainer was designed as a trapezoid in order to reduce the strain gradient while sensing vibration. In addition, an interrogation method was used to eliminate interactions between measured parameters. Experiments were carried out to analyze the performance of the proposed sensor. For individual strain measurement in the range of 0−152 με, the sensitivity and nonlinearity error were 1.878 pm/με and 2.43% Full Scale (F.S.), respectively. For individual temperature measurement in the range of 50−210 °C, the sensitivity and nonlinearity error were 29.324 pm/°C and 1.88% F.S., respectively. The proposed sensor also demonstrated a sensitivity of 0.769 pm/m·s−2 and nonlinearity error of 1.83% F.S. for vibration measurement in the range of 10−55 m/s2. Finally, simultaneously measuring strain, temperature, and vibration resulted in nonlinearity errors of 4.23% F.S., 1.89% F.S., and 2.23% F.S., respectively.

Readily available temperature sensing in boilers is necessary to improve efficiencies, minimize downtime, and reduce toxic emissions for a power plant. The current techniques are typically deployed as a single-point measurement and are primarily used for detection and prevention of catastrophic events due to the harsh environment. In this work, a multi-point temperature sensor based on wavelength-multiplexed sapphire fiber Bragg gratings (SFBGs) were fabricated via the point-by-point method with a femtosecond laser. The sensor was packaged and calibrated in the lab, including thermally equilibrating at 1200 °C, followed by a 110-h, 1000 °C stability test. After laboratory testing, the sensor system was deployed in both a commercial coal-fired and a gas-fired boiler for 42 days and 48 days, respectively. The performance of the sensor was consistent during the entire test duration, over the course of which it measured temperatures up to 950 °C (with some excursions over 1000 °C), showing the survivability of the sensor in a field environment. The sensor has a demonstrated measurement range from room temperature to 1200 °C, but the maximum temperature limit is expected to be up to 1900 °C, based on previous work with other sapphire based temperature sensors.

Here we report a novel synthesis approach for the preparation of α-MoO3:Ln3+ materials employing a two-step synthesis. Additionally, in this work the α-MoO3:Ln3+ materials are reported as potential optical thermometers for the first time. In this synthesis approach, first MoS2 2D nanosheets were prepared, which were further heat treated to obtain α-MoO3. These materials were fully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and luminescence spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent luminescence measurements were carried out to determine the optical thermometric properties of two different types of α-MoO3:Ln3+ materials (Eu3+/Tb3+ downshifting and Er3+/Yb3+ upconversion luminescence systems). We demonstrate in this study that this class of material could be a potential candidate for temperature-sensing applications.

In this study, vanadium oxide (VxOy) semiconducting resistive thermometer thin films were developed, and their temperature-dependent resistive behavior was examined. Multilayers of 5-nm-thick vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) and 5-nm-thick vanadium (V) films were alternately sputter-deposited, at room temperature, to form 105-nm-thick VxOy films, which were post-deposition annealed at 300 °C in O2 and N2 atmospheres for 30 and 40 min. The synthesized VxOy thin films were then patterned into resistive thermometer structures, and their resistance versus temperature (R-T) characteristics were measured. Samples annealed in O2 achieved temperature coefficients of resistance (TCRs) of −3.0036 and −2.4964%/K at resistivity values of 0.01477 and 0.00819 Ω·cm, respectively. Samples annealed in N2 achieved TCRs of −3.18 and −1.1181%/K at resistivity values of 0.04718 and 0.002527 Ω·cm, respectively. The developed thermometer thin films had TCR/resistivity properties suitable for microbolometer and antenna-coupled microbolometer applications. The employed multilayer synthesis technique was shown to be effective in tuning the TCR/resistivity properties of the thin films by varying the annealing conditions.

Temperature is of major importance in most branches of science and technology as well as in everyday life, and with the miniaturization of electronic devices and the increasing ability to make research into small-scale systems, a specific need for very small thermostats and thermometers has been created. Here we describe how DNA molecules can be used as nanoscale sensors to meet these requirements. We illustrate how the hybridization kinetics between bases in DNA molecules combined with conformational changes of the DNA backbone can be exploited in the construction of simple but versatile temperature switches and thermometers, which can be built into electronic systems. DNA based sensors are at the same time applicable as ion detectors to monitor the chemical environment of a specific system.

We report the application of a microfluidic device for semi-contact temperature measurement in picoliter volumes of aqueous media. Our device, a freely positionable multifunctional pipette, operates by a hydrodynamic confinement principle, i.e., by creating a virtual flow cell of micrometer dimensions within a greater aqueous volume. We utilized two fluorescent rhodamines, which exhibit different fluorescent responses with temperature, and made ratiometric intensity measurements. The temperature dependence of the intensity ratio was calibrated and used in a model study of the thermal activation of TRPV1 ion channels expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells. Our approach represents a practical and robust solution to the specific problem of measuring temperature in biological experiments in vitro, involving highly localized heat generation, for example with an IR-B laser.

In this article, an extreme environment-capable temperature sensing system based on state-of-art silicon carbide (SiC) wireless electronics is presented. In conjunction with a Pt-Pb thermocouple, the SiC wireless sensor suite is operable at 450 °C while under centrifugal load greater than 1,000 g. This SiC wireless temperature sensing system is designed to be non-intrusively embedded inside the gas turbine generators, acquiring the temperature information of critical components such as turbine blades, and wirelessly transmitting the information to the receiver located outside the turbine engine. A prototype system was developed and verified up to 450 °C through high temperature lab testing. The combination of the extreme temperature SiC wireless telemetry technology and integrated harsh environment sensors will allow for condition-based in-situ maintenance of power generators and aircraft turbines in field operation, and can be applied in many other industries requiring extreme environment monitoring and maintenance.

New miniaturized sensors for biological and medical applications must be adapted to the measuring environments and they should provide a high measurement resolution to sense small changes. The Vernier effect is an effective way of magnifying the sensitivity of a device, allowing for higher resolution sensing. We applied this concept to the development of a small-size optical fiber Fabry–Perot interferometer probe that presents more than 60-fold higher sensitivity to temperature than the normal Fabry–Perot interferometer without the Vernier effect. This enables the sensor to reach higher temperature resolutions. The silica Fabry–Perot interferometer is created by focused ion beam milling of the end of a tapered multimode fiber. Multiple Fabry–Perot interferometers with shifted frequencies are generated in the cavity due to the presence of multiple modes. The reflection spectrum shows two main components in the Fast Fourier transform that give rise to the Vernier effect. The superposition of these components presents an enhancement of sensitivity to temperature. The same effect is also obtained by monitoring the reflection spectrum node without any filtering. A temperature sensitivity of -654 pm/°C was obtained between 30 °C and 120 °C, with an experimental resolution of 0.14 °C. Stability measurements are also reported.

This paper demonstrates a method for the development of stepped-metal coating on optical fiber Bragg grating. The paper also analyzes the dual-peak resonance restructured by the nickel/copper stepped-metal coating. According to the coefficients of linear thermal expansion of the coatings, the modeling and experimental analysis is categorized into three types: Type A, Type B, and Type C. We denote the temperature sensitivity difference between the two peaks as ΔKT for Type A, ΔK′T for Type B, and ΔK″T for Type C. The experimental results show that ΔKT, ΔK′T, and ΔK″T are 2.1 pm/°C, 6.5 pm/°C, and 0.8 pm/°C, respectively. The model analysis and the experimental results all show the Type B stepped-metal coating causes the most obvious temperature sensitivity difference between the two resonance peaks. The stepped-metal coating on the same one Bragg grating can restructure the single resonance into dual-peak resonance with different temperature sensing, and Type B can be used to develop a dual-parameter optical fiber Bragg grating sensor at one location which can measure two physical parameters simultaneously.

A temperature fiber sensor based on tapered fiber Bragg grating (tapered FBG) fabricated by femtosecond laser has been proposed and realized with good reproducibility. Firstly, the fiber taper with 25 μm diameter and 1000 μm length is fabricated by arc-discharge elongation using two standard single-mode fibers. Secondly, two first-order FBGs are fabricated in tapered and non-tapered fiber regions for comparison. Both FBGs are point-by-point direct-written by femtosecond laser, and the grating lengths are 1000 μm. Thirdly, a temperature experiment is performed using a heating chamber, and experimental results show that in the range of 30~350 °C, the temperature sensitivity of the tapered FBG has increased from 11.0 pm/°C to 12.3 pm/°C. The tapered FBG proposed here can be further configured for sensing other parameters in physical, chemical, and biomedical applications.
