The Ångström–Prescott formula is commonly used in climatological calculation methods of solar radiation simulation. Aiming at the characteristics of a vast area, few meteorological stations, and uneven distribution in the tropical regions of China, in order to obtain the optimal parameters of the global solar radiation calculation model, this study proposes a suitable monthly global solar radiation model based on the single-station approach and the between-groups linkage of the A–P model, which utilizes monthly measured meteorological data from 80 meteorological stations spanning the period from 1996 to 2016 in the tropical zone of China, considering the similarity in changes of monthly sunshine percentage between stations. The applicability and accuracy of the correction parameters (a and b coefficients) were tested and evaluated, and then the modified parameters were extended to conventional meteorological stations through Thiessen polygons. Finally, the spatial distribution of solar radiation in the tropical region of China was simulated by kriging, IDW, and spline interpolation techniques. The results show the following: (1) The single-station model exhibited the highest accuracy in simulating the average annual global solar radiation, followed by the model based on the between-groups linkage. After optimizing the a and b coefficients, the simulation accuracy of the average annual global solar radiation increased by 5.3%, 8.1%, and 4.4% for the whole year, dry season, and wet season, respectively. (2) Through cross-validation, the most suitable spatial interpolation methods for the whole year, dry season, and wet season in the tropical zone of China were IDW, Kriging, and Spline, respectively. This research has positive implications for improving the accuracy of solar radiation prediction and guiding regional agricultural production.

Traditional research in inflammatory dermatoses has relied on animal models and reconstructed human epidermis to study these conditions. However, these models are limited in replicating the complexity of real human skin and reproducing the intricate pathological changes in skin barrier components and lipid profiles. To address this gap, we developed experimental models that mimic various human inflammatory skin phenotypes. Human ex vivo skins were stimulated with various triggers, creating models for inflammation-induced angiogenesis, irritation response, and chronic T-cell activation. We assessed the alterations in skin morphology, cellular infiltrates, cytokine production, and epidermal lipidomic profiles. In the pro-angiogenesis model, we observed increased mast cell degranulation and elevated levels of angiogenic growth factors. Both the irritant and chronic inflammation models exhibited severe epidermal disruption, along with macrophage infiltration, leukocyte exocytosis, and heightened cytokine levels. Lipidomic analysis revealed minor changes in the pro-angiogenesis model, whereas the chronic inflammation and irritant models exhibited significant decreases in barrier essential ceramide subclasses and a shift toward shorter acyl chain lengths (

Due to the complexity of the microstructure of porous media, it is of great significance to explore the heat transport mechanism in porous media in many engineering applications. In this study, an expression for effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of porous media embedded with randomly distributed damaged tree-like bifurcation networks is derived based on the theory of thermodynamics and fractal features of tree-like bifurcation networks. We investigate the effect of heat conduction and heat convection in porous media embedded with randomly distributed damaged tree-like bifurcation networks on the ETC of the porous media. It is found that our fractal model has good consistency with the existing available experimental data. In addition, the influence of the microstructural parameters of the model on heat transfer in the porous media is analyzed in detail. The research results can provide significant theoretical guidance for the development and design of heat transfer systems.

The CAD/CAM technology has been increasingly popular in manufacturing spinal braces for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in clinics. However, whether the CAD/CAM-manufactured braces or the CAD/CAM-manufactured braces integrating with biomechanical simulation could improve the in-brace correction angle of spinal braces in AIS patients, compared to the manually manufactured braces, has remained unclear. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the in-brace correction angle of (1) computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-manufactured braces or (2) the CAD/CAM-manufactured braces integrating with biomechanical simulation with that of (3) manually manufactured braces. The Web of Science, OVID, EBSCO, PUBMED, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant studies published up to March 2023. Five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or randomized controlled crossover trials were included for qualitative synthesis, and four of them were included for meta-analysis. The meta-analysis effect sizes of the in-brace correction angle for CAD/CAM versus manual method, and CAD/CAM integrating with biomechanical simulation versus the manual method in the thoracic curve group and the thoracolumbar/lumbar curve group were 0.6° (mean difference [MD], 95% confidence intervals [CI]: −1.06° to 2.25°), 1.12° (MD, 95% CI: −8.43° to 10.67°), and 3.96° (MD, 95% CI: 1.16° to 6.76°), respectively. This review identified that the braces manufactured by CAD/CAM integrating with biomechanical simulation did not show sufficient advantages over the manually manufactured braces, and the CAD/CAM-manufactured braces may not be considered as more worthwhile than the manually manufactured braces, based on the in-brace correction angle. More high-quality clinical studies that strictly follow the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) guidelines with long-term follow-ups are still needed to draw more solid conclusions and recommendations for clinical practice in the future.

The electrostatic field-induced electrolyte jet (E-Jet) electric discharge machining (EDM) is a newly developed micro machining method. However, the strong coupling of the electrolyte jet liquid electrode and the electrostatic induced energy prohibited it from utilization in conventional EDM process. In this study, the method with two discharge devices connecting in serials is proposed to decouple pulse energy from the E-Jet EDM process. By automatic breakdown between the E-Jet tip and the auxiliary electrode in the first device, the pulsed discharge between the solid electrode and the solid workpiece in the second device can be generated. With this method, the induced charges on the E-Jet tip can indirectly regulate the discharge between the solid electrodes, giving a new pulse discharge energy generation method for traditional micro EDM. The pulsed variation of current and voltage generated during the discharge process in conventional EDM process verified the feasibility of this decoupling approach. The influence of the distance between the jet tip and the electrode, as well as the gap between the solid electrode and the work-piece, on the pulsed energy, demonstrates that the gap servo control method is applicable. Experiments with single points and grooves indicate the machining ability of this new energy generation method.

The fabrication of pH-sensitive lignin-based materials has received considerable attention in various fields, such as biomass refining, pharmaceuticals, and detecting techniques. However, the pH-sensitive mechanism of these materials is usually depending on the hydroxyl or carboxyl content in the lignin structure, which hinders the further development of these smart materials. Here, a pH-sensitive lignin-based polymer with a novel pH-sensitive mechanism was constructed by establishing ester bonds between lignin and the active molecular 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ). The structure of the produced pH-sensitive lignin-based polymer was comprehensively characterized. The substituted degree of 8HQ was tested up to 46.6% sensitivity, and the sustained release performance of 8HQ was confirmed by the dialysis method, the sensitivity of which was found to be 60 times slower compared with the physical mixed sample. Moreover, the obtained pH-sensitive lignin-based polymer showed an excellent pH sensitivity, and the released amount of 8HQ under an alkaline condition (pH = 8) was obviously higher than that under an acidic condition (pH = 3 and 5). This work provides a new paradigm for the high-value utilization of lignin and a theory guidance for the fabrication of novel pH-sensitive lignin-based polymers.

Additively manufactured (AM) composites based on short carbon fibers possess strength and stiffness far less than their continuous fiber counterparts due to the fiber’s small aspect ratio and inadequate interfaces with the epoxy matrix. This investigation presents a route for preparing hybrid reinforcements for AM that comprise short carbon fibers and nickel-based metal-organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs). The porous MOFs furnish the fibers with tremendous surface area. Additionally, the MOFs growth process is non-destructive to the fibers and easily scalable. This investigation also demonstrates the viability of using Ni-based MOFs as a catalyst for growing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on carbon fibers. The changes to the fiber were examined via electron microscopy, X-ray scattering techniques, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The thermal stabilities were probed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Tensile and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests were utilized to explore the effect of MOFs on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed composites. Composites with MOFs exhibited improvements in stiffness and strength by 30.2% and 19.0%, respectively. The MOFs enhanced the damping parameter by 700%.

Research shows that reduced sleep duration is related to an increased risk of obesity. The relationship between sleep deprivation and obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases may be related to the imbalance of appetite regulation. To comprehensively illustrate the specific relationship between sleep deprivation and appetite regulation, this review introduces the pathophysiology of sleep deprivation, the research cutting edge of animal models, and the central regulatory mechanism of appetite under sleep deprivation. This paper summarizes the changes in appetite-related hormones orexin, ghrelin, leptin, and insulin secretion caused by long-term sleep deprivation based on the epidemiology data and animal studies that have established sleep deprivation models. Moreover, this review analyzes the potential mechanism of associations between appetite regulation and sleep deprivation, providing more clues on further studies and new strategies to access obesity and metabolic disease.

In the study of heat transfer in tree-like branching network, neither the heat convection caused by fluid flow in the tree-like branching network nor the asymmetric structure of the tree-like branching network can be ignored. In this work, we assume the porous media is embedded with a tree-like branching network that are characterized by damaged pipes. We investigated the effects of surface roughness on heat conduction and heat convection in the porous media embedded with the damaged tree-like branching network based on the fractal features of tree-like branching networks and the basic theory of thermodynamics. The proposed model for thermal conductivity can be expressed as a function of micro-structural parameters of the composite, such as the relative roughness, the ratio of thermal conductivity of the wall to that of the fluid in the micro-channel, the diameter ratio, the length ratio, the branching level, the number of damaged channels, the total number of branching levels, and the main tube porosity of the porous media. The effects of the micro-structural parameters of the model on its effective thermal conductivity have been analyzed in detail. It is believed that the joint expression of heat conduction and heat convection could enrich and develop the physical study of heat transport in porous media.

The surfaces of real objects can visually appear to be glossy, matte, or anywhere in between, but essentially, they display varying degrees of diffuse and specular reflectance. Diffuse and specular reflectance provides different clues for light estimation. However, few methods simultaneously consider the contributions of diffuse and specular reflectance for light estimation. To this end, we propose ReDDLE-Net, which performs Reflectance Decomposition for Directional Light Estimation. The primary idea is to take advantage of diffuse and specular clues and adaptively balance the contributions of estimated diffuse and specular components for light estimation. Our method achieves a superior performance advantage over state-of-the-art directional light estimation methods on the DiLiGenT benchmark. Meanwhile, the proposed ReDDLE-Net can be combined with existing calibrated photometric stereo methods to handle uncalibrated photometric stereo tasks and achieve state-of-the-art performance.

The Schroth exercise can train the paraspinal muscles of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), however, muscle performance during the training remains unknown. This study applied surface electromyography (sEMG) to investigate the paraspinal muscle activities before, during and after Schroth exercise in nine AIS patients. This study found that after the Schroth exercise, the paraspinal muscle symmetry index (PMSI) was significantly reduced (PMSI = 1.3), while symmetry exercise significantly lowered the PMSI (PMSI = 0.93 and 0.75), and asymmetric exercise significantly increased the PMSI (PMSI = 2.56 and 1.52) compared to relax standing (PMSI = 1.36) in participants (p < 0.05). Among the four exercises, the PMSI of on all fours (exercise 1) and kneeling on one side (exercise 3) was the most and the least close to 1, respectively. The highest root mean square (RMS) of sEMG at the concave and convex side was observed in squatting on the bar (exercise 2) and sitting with side bending (exercise 4), respectively. This study observed that the asymmetric and symmetric exercise induced more sEMG activity on the convex and concave side, respectively, and weight bearing exercise activated more paraspinal muscle contractions on both sides of the scoliotic curve in the included AIS patients. A larger patient sample size needs to be investigated in the future to validate the current observations.

Betel palms and mango plantations are two crucial commercial crops in tropical agricultural areas. Accurate spatial distributions of these two crops are essential in tropical agricultural regional planning and management. However, the characteristics of small patches, scattering, and perennation make it challenging to map betel palms and mango plantations in complex tropical agricultural regions. Furthermore, the excessive features of very-high-resolution (VHR) imaging might lead to a reduction in classification accuracy and an increase in computation times. To address these challenges, we selected five feature selection (FS) methods (random forest means a decrease in accuracy (RFMDA), ReliefF, random forest-recursive feature elimination (RFE), aggregated boosted tree (ABT), and logistic regression (LR)) and four machine learning algorithms (random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), classification and regression tree (CART), and adaptive boosting (AdaBoost)). Then, the optimal combinations of FS and machine learning algorithms suited for object-oriented classification of betel palms and mango plantations were explored using VHR Gaofen-2 imagery. In terms of overall accuracy, all optimal classification schemes exceeded 80%, and the classifiers using selected features increased the overall accuracy between 1% and 4% compared with classification without FS methods. Specifically, LR was appropriate to RF and SVM classifiers, which produced the highest classification accuracy (89.1% and 89.88% for RF and SVM, respectively). In contrast, ABT and ReliefF were found to be suitable FS methods for CART and AdaBoost classifiers, respectively. Overall, all four optimal combinations of FS methods and classifiers could precisely recognize mango plantations, whereas betel palms were best depicted by using the RF-LR method with 26 features. The results indicated that combination of feature selection and machine learning algorithms contributed to the object-oriented classification of complex tropical crops using Gaofen-2 imagery, which provide a useful methodological reference for precisely recognizing small tropical agricultural patterns.

Quorum sensing (QS) can regulate the pathogenicity of bacteria and the production of some virulence factors. It is a promising target for screening to find anti-virulence agents in the coming post-antibiotics era. Cyclo (L-Trp-L-Ser), one variety of cyclic dipeptides (CDPs), isolated from a marine bacterium Rheinheimera aquimaris, exhibited anti-QS activity against Chromobacterium violaceum CV026 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. Unlike the CDPs composed of phenylalanine or tyrosine, the anti-QS activity has been widely studied; however, cyclo (L-Trp-L-Ser) and derivatives, containing one tryptophan unit and one non-aromatic amino acid, have not been systematically explored. Herein, the cyclo (L-Trp-L-Ser) and seven derivatives were synthesized and evaluated. All tryptophane-contained CDPs were able to decrease the production of violacein in C.violaceum CV026 and predicted as binding within the same pocket of receptor protein CviR, but in lower binding energy compared with the natural ligand C6HSL. As for P. aeruginosa PAO1, owning more complicated QS systems, these CDPs also exhibited inhibitory effects on pyocyanin production, swimming motility, biofilm formation, and adhesion. These investigations suggested a promising way to keep the tryptophan untouched and make modifications on the non-aromatic unit to increase the anti-QS activity and decrease the cytotoxicity, thus developing a novel CDP-based anti-virulence agent.

This paper presents a comprehensive review on subsea jet trenching technology via a critical analysis of its principle, mechanism, devices, modeling approaches, as well as properties of subsea sediments. This review shows that the success of jet trenching operations is closely related to some key factors including the soil conditions, trencher specifications, and characteristics of pipelines or cables. Three case histories are presented to demonstrate the importance of these key factors and their interrelationships. This paper also points out a number of challenges pertaining to the implementation of the jet trenching method in carbonate sediments, as well as some limitations and gaps in the existing modeling approaches. Future perspective researches that are recommended to develop: (1) promising theories, like turbulent submerged flow, and (2) robust numerical approaches, such as the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and material point method (MPM) to substantiate the experimental experience and reveal possible hidden mechanisms.

This paper reports on a water inrush hazard, which occurred during the construction of the Chaoyang tunnel in Libo County, Guizhou Province, China. On 10 June 2018, a continuous water inflow of about 57 thousand m3 of water within 40 min took place at the tunnel excavation face, resulting in three casualties. The objectives of this study are to investigate and discuss the water inrush process of this atypical case. Further, an inclusive description of the implemented emergency responses will be provided. The principal causes of this tunneling incident include the karst geological condition at the construction field, hydraulic conductivity induced by the connection between karst water system and surface water body, and effects of excavation and precipitation. Moreover, based on a preliminary investigation and analysis, three main control measures to overcome similar incidents in the future are proposed: (1) Performing “water inrush risk grading” in areas prone to water inrush; (2) undertaking comprehensive geological forecast for a synthetic analysis; and (3) employing a monitoring system during the construction, and educating workers on self-protection skills. These effective management measures are bound to benefit underground engineering constructions with regard to water inrush risks.

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that women with a history of preeclampsia have a two-fold increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases in later life. It is not known whether or not this risk is associated with angiotensin II receptor type 1 autoantibody (AT1-AA), an agonist acting via activation of AT1 receptor (AT1R), which is believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The objective of the present study was to confirm the hypothesis that AT1-AA exposure during pregnancy may change the maternal cardiac structure and increase the susceptibility of the postpartum heart to ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). In the present study, we first established a preeclampsia rat model by intravenous injection of AT1-AA extracted from the plasma of rats immunized with AT1R, observed the susceptibility of the postpartum maternal heart to IRI at 16 weeks postpartum using the Langendorff preparation, and examined the cardiac structure using light and transmission electron microscopy. The modeled animals presented with symptoms very similar to the clinical symptoms of human preeclampsia during pregnancy, including hypertension and proteinuria. The left ventricular weight (LVW) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in AT1-AA treatment group were significantly increased as compared with those of the control group (p < 0.01), although there was no significant difference in final weight between the two groups. AT1-AA acting on AT1R not only induced myocardial cell hypertrophy, mitochondrial swelling, cristae disorganization and collagen accumulation in the interstitium but affected the left ventricular (LV) function and delayed recovery from IRI. In contrast, co-treatment with AT1-AA + losartan completely blocked AT1-AA-induced changes in cardiac structure and function. These data indicate that the presence of AT1-AA during pregnancy was strongly associated with the markers of LV geometry changes and remodeling, and increased the cardiac susceptibility to IRI in later life of postpartum maternal rats.

The dynamic loads acting on concrete-filled steel tubular members under axial impacts by rigid bodies were studied herein by FEM. The whole impact process was simulated and the time history of the impact load was obtained. The effects of eight factors on the axial impact load were studied; these factors were the impact speed, mass ratio, axial pressure ratio, steel ratio, slenderness ratio, concrete strength, impact position, and boundary conditions. Besides this, the effects of concrete creep on the impact load were also considered by changing the material parameters of the concrete. The results show that axial impact load changes with time as a triangle. The peak value of impact load increases and the impact resistance improves with the growth of the axial pressure ratio, steel ratio, slenderness ratio, and concrete strength after creep occurs. As the eccentricity of the axial impact acting on a concrete-filled steel tubular member increases, the peak value of the impact load decreases. The enhancement of constraints at both ends of the member can improve the impact resistance. The creep reduction coefficients for the peak axial impact load of a concrete-filled steel tubular member under axial compression and considering the creep effect over 6 months and 30 years are 0.60 and 0.55, respectively. A calculation formula for the peak value of impact load was suggested based on the existing formula, and its accuracy was proved by finite element calculation in this study.

With the development of 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile terminals are widely used in various applications under multicast scenarios. However, due to the limited computation resources of mobile terminals, reducing the computation cost of members in group key distribution processes of dynamic groups has become an important issue. In this paper, we propose a computation-efficient group key distribution (CEGKD) protocol. First, an improved secret sharing scheme is proposed to construct faster encryption and decryption algorithms. Second, the tree structure of logical key hierarchy (LKH) is employed to implement a simple and effective key-numbering method. Theoretical analysis is given to prove that the proposed protocol meets forward security and backward security. In addition, the experiment results show that the computation cost of CEGKD on the member side is reduced by more than 85% compared with that of the LKH scheme.

As a typical hazard threat for buried pipelines, an active fault can induce large plastic deformation in a pipe, leading to rupture failure. The mechanical behavior of high-strength X80 pipeline subjected to strike-slip fault displacements was investigated in detail in the presented study with parametric analysis performed by the finite element model, which simulates pipe and soil constraints on pipe by shell and nonlinear spring elements respectively. Accuracy of the numerical model was validated by previous full-scale experimental results. Insight of local buckling response of high-strength pipe under compressive strike-slip fault was revealed. Effects of the pipe-fault intersection angle, pipe operation pressure, pipe wall thickness, soil parameters and pipe buried depth on critical section axial force in buckled area, critical fault displacement, critical compressive strain and post buckling response were elucidated comprehensively. In addition, feasibility of some common buckling failure criteria (i.e., the CSA Z662 model proposed by Canadian Standard association, the UOA model proposed by University of Alberta and the CRES-GB50470 model proposed by Center of Reliable Energy System) was discussed by comparing with numerical results. This study can be referenced for performance-based design and assessment of buried high-strength pipe in geo-hazard areas.

We recently reported that protein-pacing (P; six meals/day @ 1.4 g/kg body weight (BW), three of which included whey protein (WP) supplementation) combined with a multi-mode fitness program consisting of resistance, interval sprint, stretching, and endurance exercise training (RISE) improves body composition in overweight individuals. The purpose of this study was to extend these findings and determine whether protein-pacing with only food protein (FP) is comparable to WP supplementation during RISE training on physical performance outcomes in overweight/obese individuals. Thirty weight-matched volunteers were prescribed RISE training and a P diet derived from either whey protein supplementation (WP, n = 15) or food protein sources (FP, n = 15) for 16 weeks. Twenty-one participants completed the intervention (WP, n = 9; FP, n = 12). Measures of body composition and physical performance were significantly improved in both groups (p < 0.05), with no effect of protein source. Likewise, markers of cardiometabolic disease risk (e.g., LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, glucose, insulin, adiponectin, systolic blood pressure) were significantly improved (p < 0.05) to a similar extent in both groups. These results demonstrate that both whey protein and food protein sources combined with multimodal RISE training are equally effective at improving physical performance and cardiometabolic health in obese individuals.
