Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are well known for their energy efficiency and environmental benefits. However, increasing their energy density compromises their safety. This study introduces a novel ceramic-coated separator to enhance the performance and safety of LIBs. Electrospinning was used to apply a coating consisting of an alumina (Al2O3) ceramic and polyacrylic acid (PAA) binder to a polypropylene (PP) separator to significantly improve the mechanical properties of the PP separator and, ultimately, the electrochemical properties of the battery cell. Tests with 2032-coin cells showed that the efficiency of cells containing separators coated with 0.5 g PAA/Al2O3 was approximately 10.2% higher at high current rates (C-rates) compared to cells with the bare PP separator. Open circuit voltage (OCV) tests revealed superior thermal safety, with bare PP separators maintaining stability for 453 s, whereas the cells equipped with PP separators coated with 4 g PAA/Al2O3 remained stable for 937 s. The elongation increased from 88.3% (bare PP separator) to 129.1% (PP separator coated with 4 g PAA/Al2O3), and thermal shrinkage decreased from 58.2% to 34.9%. These findings suggest that ceramic/PAA-coated separators significantly contribute to enhancing the thermal safety and capacity retention of high-energy-density LIBs.

Silicon-based electrodes offer a high theoretical capacity and a low cost, making them a promising option for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, their practical use is limited due to significant volume changes during charge/discharge cycles, which negatively impact electrochemical performance. This study proposes a practical method to increase silicon content in lithium-ion batteries with minimal changes to the manufacturing process by using dual-layer electrodes (DLEs). These DLEs are fabricated with two slurries containing silicon and graphite as active materials. Notably, the electrode with the silicon as the outermost layer on top of the graphite layer (Si-on-top) demonstrated a superior initial capacity of 935 mAh/g and retained 70% of its capacity (537 mAh/g) after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. In contrast, a single-layered electrode (SLE) with a silicon–graphite mixture retained only 50.3% of its capacity (370 mAh/g) under the same conditions. These findings suggest that DLEs, particularly with the silicon layer located on top, effectively increase silicon content in the negative electrode while remaining compatible with existing manufacturing processes. This approach offers a realistic strategy for enhancing the performance of lithium-ion batteries without significant process modifications.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing, aiming to mimic human cognitive abilities, and is addressing complex medical challenges in the field of biological science. Over the past decade, AI has experienced exponential growth and proven its effectiveness in processing massive datasets and optimizing decision-making. The main content of this review paper emphasizes the active utilization of AI in the field of stem cells. Stem cell therapies use diverse stem cells for drug development, disease modeling, and medical treatment research. However, cultivating and differentiating stem cells, along with demonstrating cell efficacy, require significant time and labor. In this review paper, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely used to overcome these limitations by analyzing stem cell images, predicting cell types and differentiation efficiency, and enhancing therapeutic outcomes. In the biomedical sciences field, AI algorithms are used to automatically screen large compound databases, identify potential molecular structures and characteristics, and evaluate the efficacy and safety of candidate drugs for specific diseases. Also, AI aids in predicting disease occurrence by analyzing patients’ genetic data, medical images, and physiological signals, facilitating early diagnosis. The stem cell field also actively utilizes AI. Artificial intelligence has the potential to make significant advances in disease risk prediction, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment and to reshape the future of healthcare. This review summarizes the applications and advancements of AI technology in fields such as drug development, regenerative medicine, and stem cell research.

An investigation of comprehensive service requirements and their importance across various stakeholders is needed to develop systematic swallowing healthcare services. The present study examined the service requirements and their importance in developing comprehensive swallowing healthcare services from diverse stakeholders, including healthy seniors, individuals at risk, patients, guardians, and medical professionals, within the context of dysphagia. A series of survey-based interviews with 35 participants from the 5 stakeholder groups identified a comprehensive array of requirements pertinent to swallowing healthcare. Subsequently, a larger survey of 125 participants was administered using a 7-point Likert scale to evaluate the perceived importance of the identified requirements. A total of 46 distinct requirements were identified across the prevention/screening, evaluation/diagnosis, and treatment/training stages of swallowing healthcare. Accessibility, customization, usability, practicality, and information availability were features commonly identified across the three stages. Evaluation of the importance of these requirements yielded ratings ranging from 5.0 to 6.6. Significantly higher ratings were found for requirements associated with the evaluation/diagnosis and treatment/training stages, underscoring the stakeholder groups’ pronounced preference for services directed at these specific stages of the healthcare continuum. The study offers insights into the multifaceted requirements of stakeholders in swallowing healthcare, emphasizing the necessity for personalized, easily accessible, and comprehensive services. These findings serve as a foundational framework on targeted interventions and tailored services designed to address the diverse requirements of stakeholders for swallowing healthcare.

In fabricating functional layers, including thin-film transistors and conductive electrodes, using roll-to-roll (R2R) processing on polymer-based PET film, the instability of the slot-die coating meniscus under a high-speed web impedes functional layer formation with the desired thickness and width. The thickness profiles of the functional layers significantly impact the performance of the final products. In this study, we introduce an electrohydrodynamic (EHD)-based voltage application module to a slot-die coater to ensure the uniformity of the cross-machine direction (CMD) thickness profile within the functional layer and enable a stable, high-speed R2R process. The module can effectively control the spreadability of the meniscus by utilizing variations in the surface tension of the ink. The effectiveness of the EHD module was experimentally verified by applying a high voltage to a slot-die coater while keeping other process variables constant. As the applied voltage increases, the CMD thickness deviation reduces by 64.5%, and the production rate significantly increases (up to 300%), owing to the formation of a stable coated layer. The introduction of the EHD-based application module to the slot-die coater effectively controlled the spreadability of the meniscus, producing large-area functional layers.

The ESA/Rosetta mission accompanied the Jupiter Family Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and provided a huge amount of data which are providing important results about cometary activity mechanisms. We summarize the results obtained within the ISSI International Team Characterization of 67P cometary activity, which studied dust and gas ejection in different stages of the comet’s orbit, by means of a data fusion between instruments onboard the Rosetta orbiter, i.e., the OSIRIS camera, the VIRTIS imaging spectrometer, the GIADA dust detector, the MIDAS atomic force microscope, the COSIMA dust mass spectrometer, and the ROSINA gas mass spectrometer, supported by numerical models and experimental work. The team reconstructed the motion of the dust particles ejected from the comet surface, finding a correlation between dust ejection and solar illumination as well as larger occurrence of fluffy (pristine) particles in less processed and more pebble-rich terrains. Dust activity is larger in ice-rich terrains, indicating that water sublimation is the dominant activity process during the perihelion phase. The comparison of dust fluxes of different particle size suggests a link between dust morphology and ejection speed, generation of micrometric dust from fragmentation of millimetric dust, and homogeneity of physical properties of compact dust particles across the 67P surface. The comparison of fluxes of refractory and ice particles suggests the occurrence of a small amount of ice in fluffy particles, which is released when they are fragmented. A new model of cometary activity has been finally developed, according to which the comet nucleus includes Water-Ice-Enriched Blocks (WEBs), that, when exposed by CO2 activity, are the main sources of water sublimation and dust ejection.

In this study, we introduce a novel design for a three-dimensional (3D) controller, which incorporates the omni-purpose stretchable strain sensor (OPSS sensor). This sensor exhibits both remarkable sensitivity, with a gauge factor of approximately 30, and an extensive working range, accommodating strain up to 150%, thereby enabling accurate 3D motion sensing. The 3D controller is structured such that its triaxial motion can be discerned independently along the X, Y, and Z axes by quantifying the deformation of the controller through multiple OPSS sensors affixed to its surface. To ensure precise and real-time 3D motion sensing, a machine learning-based data analysis technique was implemented for the effective interpretation of the multiple sensor signals. The outcomes reveal that the resistance-based sensors successfully and accurately track the 3D controller’s motion. We believe that this innovative design holds the potential to augment the performance of 3D motion sensing devices across a diverse range of applications, encompassing gaming, virtual reality, and robotics.

The roll-to-roll manufacturing system is extensively used for mass producing products made of plastic, paper, and fabric in several traditional industries. When flexible substrates, also known as webs, are heated and transported inside the dryer, an inconsistent temperature distribution occurs on the material in the machine direction (MD) and cross-machine direction (CMD). If rollers are not aligned in parallel on the same plane in the roll-to-roll web handling process, or if roller misalignment exists, strain deviation occurs in the web, resulting in lateral displacement and web wrinkles. Therefore, this study examined a wrinkle, which is a thermal deformation that occurs when an inconsistent web temperature distribution is formed on the material inside a dryer. The changes in the elastic modulus and thermal expansion of the web were also examined. Experiments were conducted using a PET film, and its elastic modulus and thermal expansion were examined. The results showed that the presence of a web wrinkle defect can cause a thickness deviation in the functional layer manufactured on the web. Moreover, an appropriate operating speed should be set to reduce the CMD temperature deviation, thereby reducing instances of wrinkle defects.

The exploration of superhydrophobic drag reduction has been and continues to be of significant interest to various industries. In the present work, direct numerical simulation (DNS) is utilized to investigate the effect of the parameters on the drag-reducing performance of superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS). Simulations with a friction Reynolds number of 180 were carried out at solid fraction values of ϕs=116,111, and 14, and three distribution shapes: aligned, staggered, and random. The top wall is the smooth one, and the bottom wall is a superhydrophobic surface (SHS). Drag reduction and Reynolds stress profiles are compared for all cases. The turbulent kinetic energy budget, including production, dissipation, and diffusion, is presented with respect to the solid fraction and type of distribution to investigate the drag reduction mechanism. The sizes of the longitudinal vortices and formation of hairpin vortices are investigated through the observation of coherent structures. The simulation of a post model is a useful method to study the drag reduction for different solid fraction values and distribution geometries. Our study demonstrates that the drag reduction could acquire 42% with the solid fraction value ϕs=116 and an aligned distribution shape for post superhydrophobic surface geometry. Our study also showed the relationship of the Reynolds stress component (R11, R22, and R33) to the drag reduction with the differences in the solid fraction values and distribution geometry. In which, the R11 component has the most change between an aligned distribution and a random one. The peak value of R11 tends to shift away from the SHS wall. In addition, the analysis of the TKE budget over the superhydrophobic surface was performed, which can be adopted as a useful resource in turbulence modeling based on RANS methodology.

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), a type of electroactive polymers (EAPs), are smart materials that are used in various fields such as artificial muscles and biomimetic robots. In this study, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), which are conductive carbon fillers, were added to a widely used DEA, namely, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), to improve its low actuated strain. Four grades of GNPs were used: H5, H25, M5, and M25 (here, the number following the letter indicates the average particle size of the GNPs in μm). The average layer thickness of the H grade is 13–14 nm and that of the M grade is 5–7 nm. PDMS composites were prepared by adding 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 wt% of each GNP, following which the mechanical properties, dielectric properties, and actuated strain of the composites were measured. The mechanical properties were found to increase as the particle size increased. Regarding the dielectric characteristics, it was found that the higher the aspect ratio of the filler, the easier the formation of a micro-capacitor network in the composite—this led to an increase in the dielectric constant. In addition, the higher amounts of GNPs in the composites also led to an increase in the dielectric constant. For the actuated strain analysis, the electromechanical sensitivity was calculated using the ratio of the dielectric constant to the Young’s modulus, which is proportional to the strain. However, it was found that when the loss tangent was high, the performance of the actuated strain decreased owing to the conversion of electric energy into thermal energy and leakage current loss. As a result, the highest actuated strain was exhibited by the M25 composite, with an actuated strain value of 3.01% measured at a low electric field (

Despite all the expectations for photoacoustic endoscopy (PAE), there are still several technical issues that must be resolved before the technique can be successfully translated into clinics. Among these, electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise, in addition to the limited signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), have hindered the rapid development of related technologies. Unlike endoscopic ultrasound, in which the SNR can be increased by simply applying a higher pulsing voltage, there is a fundamental limitation in leveraging the SNR of PAE signals because they are mostly determined by the optical pulse energy applied, which must be within the safety limits. Moreover, a typical PAE hardware situation requires a wide separation between the ultrasonic sensor and the amplifier, meaning that it is not easy to build an ideal PAE system that would be unaffected by EMI noise. With the intention of expediting the progress of related research, in this study, we investigated the feasibility of deep-learning-based EMI noise removal involved in PAE image processing. In particular, we selected four fully convolutional neural network architectures, U-Net, Segnet, FCN-16s, and FCN-8s, and observed that a modified U-Net architecture outperformed the other architectures in the EMI noise removal. Classical filter methods were also compared to confirm the superiority of the deep-learning-based approach. Still, it was by the U-Net architecture that we were able to successfully produce a denoised 3D vasculature map that could even depict the mesh-like capillary networks distributed in the wall of a rat colorectum. As the development of a low-cost laser diode or LED-based photoacoustic tomography (PAT) system is now emerging as one of the important topics in PAT, we expect that the presented AI strategy for the removal of EMI noise could be broadly applicable to many areas of PAT, in which the ability to apply a hardware-based prevention method is limited and thus EMI noise appears more prominently due to poor SNR.

This study investigates the switching characteristics of the silicon oxynitride (SiOxNy)-based bipolar resistive random-access memory (RRAM) devices at different operating ambiances at temperatures ranging from 300 K to 77 K. The operating ambiances (open air or vacuum) and temperature affect the device’s performance. The electroforming-free multilevel bipolar Au/Ni/SiOxNy/p+-Si RRAM device (in open-air) becomes bilevel in a vacuum with an on/off ratio >104 and promising data retention properties. The device becomes more resistive with cryogenic temperatures. The experimental results indicate that the presence and absence of moisture (hydrogen and hydroxyl groups) in open air and vacuum, respectively, alter the elemental composition of the amorphous SiOxNy active layer and Ni/SiOxNy interface region. Consequently, this affects the overall device performance. Filament-type resistive switching and trap-controlled space charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanisms in the bulk SiOxNy layer are confirmed.

Biofilms are complex surface-attached bacterial communities that serve as a protective survival strategy to adapt to an environment. Bacterial contamination and biofilm formation on implantable medical devices pose a serious threat to human health, and these biofilms have become the most important source of nosocomial infections. Although antimicrobial-impregnated catheters have been employed to prevent bacterial infection, there have been concerns about the potential emergence of antibiotic resistance. To investigate the risk of developing resistance, we performed RNA-sequencing gene expression profiling of P. aeruginosa biofilms in response to chronic exposure to clindamycin and rifampicin eluted from antibiotic-coated catheters in a CDC biofilm bioreactor. There were 877 and 178 differentially expressed genes identified in planktonic and biofilm cells after growth for 144 h with control (without antibiotic-impregnation) and clindamycin/rifampicin-impregnated catheters, respectively. The differentially expressed genes were further analyzed by Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COGs) functional classification and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses. The data are publicly available through the GEO database with accession number GSE153546.

This study investigates switching characteristics of the magnesium fluoride (MgFx)-based bipolar resistive random-access memory (RRAM) devices at different operating ambiances (open-air and vacuum). Operating ambiances alter the elemental composition of the amorphous MgFx active layer and Ti/MgFx interface region, which affects the overall device performance. The experimental results indicate that filament type resistive switching takes place at the interface of Ti/MgFx and trap-controlled space charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanisms is dominant in both the low and high resistance states in the bulk MgFx layer. RRAM device performances at different operating ambiances are also altered by MgFx active layer treatments (air exposure and annealing). Devices show the better uniformity, stability, and a higher on/off current ratio in vacuum compared to an open-air environment. The Ti/MgFx/Pt memory devices have great potential for future vacuum electronic applications.

For the treatment of sinus surgery-induced osteitis in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), oral or intranasal administration of corticoids is generally used, although it has critical limitations and unavoidable side effects. To overcome these limitations, we designed dexamethasone (Dex)-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microparticles with bone-specific binding affinity, which could release the encapsulated Dex in a sustained manner on the exposed bone after the surgical wound in the nasal cavity. In a previous report, we prepared poly(butyl methacrylate-co-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate) (PBMP) with both calcium-binding phosphomonoester groups and PLGA-binding butyl groups to introduce strong calcium-binding property to PLGA particles. In this study, after successful encapsulation of Dex in the PBMP-coated PLGA particles, we applied the Dex-PLGA/PBMP to the treatment of post-operative osteitis in the sinonasal cavity. The Dex-PLGA/PBMP showed more than 5-times higher binding affinity to the hydroxyapatite (HA) surface compared to the non-coated PLGA particles, without altering the morphology and encapsulation efficiency. After establishing the neo-osteogenesis mouse model by mechanical injury of the nasal mucosa, the activity of intranasally administered Dex-PLGA/PBMP was examined to inhibit the formation of undesirable new woven bone during the wound healing process. In addition, significantly lower osteocalcin activity was observed in the group treated with Dex-PLGA/PBMP, indicating decreased activation of osteoblasts. Overall, these results demonstrate that the PLGA/PBMP microparticle strategy has great potential for the treatment of CRS-related osteitis by localized corticoid delivery on the exposed bones with minimal side effects.

Membrane fouling is a dominant limit of the membrane separation process. In this research, the optimal water backwashing to solve the membrane fouling problem was investigated in the combined water treatment process of alumina MF and pure polypropylene (PP) beads. Additionally, the influence of membrane shape (tubular or seven channel) was examined, depending on the water backwashing period. The optimal backwashing time (BT) could be 20 s in the combined water treatment process, because of the highest total treated volume (VT) in our BT 6–30 s conditions. The optimal backwashing period (BP) could be 6 min, because of the minimum membrane fouling and the maximum VT in the combined process of tubular alumina MF and PP beads. The resistance of reversible membrane fouling (Rrf) showed a major resistance of total membrane fouling, and that of irreversible membrane fouling (Rif) was a minor one, in the combined process using tubular or seven channel MF. The Rif showed a decreasing trend obviously, as decreasing BT from NBW to 2 min for seven channel MF. It means that the more frequent water backwashing could be more effective to control the membrane fouling, especially irreversible fouling, for seven channel membranes than tubular membranes.

The development of anticancer drugs remains challenging owing to the potential for drug resistance. The simultaneous inhibition of multiple targets involved in cancer could overcome resistance, and these agents would exhibit higher potency than single-target inhibitors. Protein kinases represent a promising target for the development of anticancer agents. As most multi-kinase inhibitors are heterocycles occupying only the hinge and hydrophobic region in the ATP binding site, we aimed to design multi-kinase inhibitors that would occupy the ribose pocket, along with the hinge and hydrophobic region, based on ATP-kinase interactions. Herein, we report the discovery of a novel 4′-thionucleoside template as a multi-kinase inhibitor with potent anticancer activity. The in vitro evaluation revealed a lead 1g (7-acetylene-7-deaza-4′-thioadenosine) with potent anticancer activity, and marked inhibition of TRKA, CK1δ, and DYRK1A/1B kinases in the kinome scan assay. We believe that these findings will pave the way for developing anticancer drugs.

Commodity processor architectures are releasing various instruction set extensions to support security solutions for the efficient mitigation of memory vulnerabilities. Among them, tagged memory extension (TME), such as ARM MTE and SPARC ADI, can prevent unauthorized memory access by utilizing tagged memory. However, our analysis found that TME has performance and security issues in practical use. To alleviate these, in this paper, we propose CoMeT, a new instruction set extension for tagged memory. The key idea behind CoMeT is not only to check whether the tag values in the address tag and memory tag are matched, but also to check the access permissions for each tag value. We implemented the prototype of CoMeT on the RISC-V platform. Our evaluation results confirm that CoMeT can be utilized to efficiently implement well-known security solutions, i.e., shadow stack and in-process isolation, without compromising security.

In this study, an experimental program was performed on masonry-infilled frame specimens with varied construction precision and masonry thickness. A total of five portal frame specimens, which consist of four masonry-infilled frames and a bare frame, were tested, and the results were analyzed to investigate the effects of construction precision and interaction between the masonry infill and the frame. The test results indicated that the gap in the masonry infill decreased strength by 75% to 80% and stiffness by 55% to 70%. A comparison between the measured and predicted peak strength using the current code shows that the code equations underestimate the strength by up to 70%. This is due to the fact that the contribution of friction in shear resistance of the masonry wall is actually ignored in the current code since no adequate method for estimating the normal force is provided. In addition, reflecting the observation that the failure mode of the columns changed to shear failure when thick masonry walls were used, a mechanical model that can explain the shear failure and enables the estimation of maximum strength was proposed. The maximum strengths of the specimens calculated using the proposed model were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Wire + arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) utilizes a welding arc as a heat source and a metal wire as a feedstock. In recent years, WAAM has attracted significant attention in the manufacturing industry owing to its advantages: (1) high deposition rate, (2) low system setup cost, (3) wide diversity of wire materials, and (4) sustainability for constructing large-sized metal structures. However, owing to the complexity of arc welding in WAAM, more research efforts are required to improve its process repeatability and advance part qualification. This study proposes a methodology to detect defects of the arch welding process in WAAM using images acquired by a high dynamic range camera. The gathered images are preprocessed to emphasize features and used for an artificial intelligence model to classify normal and abnormal statuses of arc welding in WAAM. Owing to the shortage of image datasets for defects, transfer learning technology is adopted. In addition, to understand and check the basis of the model’s feature learning, a gradient-weighted class activation mapping algorithm is applied to select a model that has the correct judgment criteria. Experimental results show that the detection accuracy of the metal transfer region-of-interest (RoI) reached 99%, whereas that of the weld-pool and bead RoI was 96%.

Electroforming-free resistive switching random access memory (RRAM) devices employing magnesium fluoride (MgFx) as the resistive switching layer are reported. The electroforming-free MgFx based RRAM devices exhibit bipolar SET/RESET operational characteristics with an on/off ratio higher than 102 and good data retention of >104 s. The resistive switching mechanism in the Ti/MgFx/Pt devices combines two processes as well as trap-controlled space charge limited conduction (SCLC), which is governed by pre-existing defects of fluoride vacancies in the bulk MgFx layer. In addition, filamentary switching mode at the interface between the MgFx and Ti layers is assisted by O–H group-related defects on the surface of the active layer.

The quality of fecal specimens is one of the factors responsible for successful Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) diagnosis. The quality depends largely on the storage conditions, including the temperature and time period. In this study, we organized the outputs of previous studies, filled experimental gaps in the knowledge of storage conditions, and introduced a pragmatic strategy for fecal storage for CDI diagnosis. A 5-step pathway was adopted to develop the fecal specimen storage strategy as follows: step 1, bibliomic analysis; step 2, experimental gap-filling; step 3, comparative evaluation; step 4, strategy development; step 5, internal review. Step 1 identified eight articles providing experimental information on the effects of fecal specimen storage conditions on the effectiveness of C. difficile detection methods. Step 2 provided additional quantitative data on C. difficile vegetative and spore cell viability and DNA stability. All previous and current results were compared (step 3). In step 4, fir general and nine special strategies were developed, followed by an internal review of the overall approaches (step 5). It is recommended to separate fecal samples into aliquots before testing and storing them. It is particularly recommended that fecal specimen samples be stored for CDI diagnosis at 4 °C for up to 60 days for all test methods.

Emerging evidence suggests that atypical changes in driving behaviors may be early signals of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. This study aims to assess the utility of naturalistic driving data and machine learning techniques in predicting incident MCI and dementia in older adults. Monthly driving data captured by in-vehicle recording devices for up to 45 months from 2977 participants of the Longitudinal Research on Aging Drivers study were processed to generate 29 variables measuring driving behaviors, space and performance. Incident MCI and dementia cases (n = 64) were ascertained from medical record reviews and annual interviews. Random forests were used to classify the participant MCI/dementia status during the follow-up. The F1 score of random forests in discriminating MCI/dementia status was 29% based on demographic characteristics (age, sex, race/ethnicity and education) only, 66% based on driving variables only, and 88% based on demographic characteristics and driving variables. Feature importance analysis revealed that age was most predictive of MCI and dementia, followed by the percentage of trips traveled within 15 miles of home, race/ethnicity, minutes per trip chain (i.e., length of trips starting and ending at home), minutes per trip, and number of hard braking events with deceleration rates ≥ 0.35 g. If validated, the algorithms developed in this study could provide a novel tool for early detection and management of MCI and dementia in older drivers.

Existing swallowing evaluation methods using X-ray or endoscopy are qualitative. The present study develops a swallowing monitoring and assessment system (SMAS) that is nonintrusive and quantitative. The SMAS comprises an ultrasonic Doppler sensor array, a microphone, and an inertial measurement unit to measure ultrasound signals originating only from swallowing activities. Ultrasound measurements were collected for combinations of two viscosity conditions (water and yogurt) and two volume conditions (3 mL and 9 mL) from 24 healthy participants (14 males and 10 females; age = 30.5 ± 7.6 years) with no history of swallowing disorders and were quantified for 1st peak amplitude, 2nd peak amplitude, peak-to-peak (PP) time interval, duration, energy, and proportion of two or more peaks. The peak amplitudes and energy significantly decreased by viscosity and the PP time interval and duration increased by volume. The correlation between the time measures were higher (r = 0.78) than that of the amplitude measures (r = 0.30), and the energy highly correlated with the 1st peak amplitude (r = 0.86). The proportion of two or more peaks varied from 76.8% to 87.9% by viscosity and volume. Further research is needed to examine the concurrent validity and generalizability of the ultrasonic Doppler sensor-based SMAS.

Passive task-related (TR) fatigue caused by monotonous driving can negatively affect driving safety by impairing driver alertness and performance. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a motion seat system on the driver’s passive TR fatigue in terms of driving performance, physiological response, and subjective fatigue by using automotive and physiological sensors those applicable to on-road driving environment. Twenty drivers (5 females and 15 males; age = 38.5 ± 12.2) with more than two years of driving experience participated in an on-road experiment with two driving conditions: driving in the static seat condition during the first half of the driving session and then in the static (static–static, SS) or motion seat (static–motion, SM) condition during the second half. The SM condition showed significantly lower passive TR fatigue by 4.4~56.5% compared to the SS condition in terms of the standard deviation of velocity, percentage of eyelid closure rate (PERCLOS), and the ratio of low- to high-frequency power (LF/HF) of electrocardiography signals. The drivers rated significantly lower subjective state changes of overall fatigue, mental fatigue, passive TR fatigue, drowsiness, and decreased concentration in the SM condition than those in the SS condition. The findings of the study support the use of a motion seat system can be an effective countermeasure to reduce passive TR fatigue.

Surface electromyography is widely used in many fields to infer human intention. However, conventional electrodes are not appropriate for long-term measurements and are easily influenced by the environment, so the range of applications of sEMG is limited. In this paper, we propose a flexible band-integrated, curved microneedle array electrode for robust long-term measurements, high selectivity, and easy applicability. Signal quality, in terms of long-term usability and sensitivity to perspiration, was investigated. Its motion-discriminating performance was also evaluated. The results show that the proposed electrode is robust to perspiration and can maintain a high-quality measuring ability for over 8 h. The proposed electrode also has high selectivity for motion compared with a commercial wet electrode and dry electrode.

Turbomachine components used in aerospace and power plant applications preferably require continuous structural health monitoring at various temperatures. The structural health of pristine and damaged superalloy compressor blades of a gas turbine engine was monitored using real electro-mechanical impedance of deposited thick film piezoelectric transducers at 20 and 200 °C. IVIUM impedance analyzer was implemented in laboratory conditions for damage detection in superalloy blades, while a custom-architected frequency-domain transceiver circuit was used for semi-field circumstances. Recorded electromechanical impedance signals at 20 and 200 °C acquired from two piezoelectric wafer active sensors bonded to an aluminum plate, near and far from the damage, were initially utilized for accuracy and reliability verification of the transceiver at temperatures >20 °C. Damage formation in both the aluminum plate and blades showed a peak shift in the swept frequency along with an increase in the amplitude and number of impedance peaks. The thermal energy at 200 °C, on the other hand, enforces a further subsequent peak shift in the impedance signal to pristine and damaged parts such that the anti-resonance frequency keeps reducing as the temperature increases. The results obtained from the impedance signals of both piezoelectric wafers and piezo-films, revealed that increasing the temperature somewhat decreased the real impedance amplitude and the number of anti-resonance peaks, which is due to an increase in permittivity and capacitance of piezo-sensors. A trend is also presented for artificial intelligence training purposes to distinguish the effect of the temperature versus damage formation in sample turbine compressor blades. Implementation of such a monitoring system provides a distinct advantage to enhance the safety and functionality of critical aerospace components working at high temperatures subjected to crack, wear, hot-corrosion and erosion.

The knock phenomenon is one of the major hindrances for enhancing the thermal efficiency in spark-ignited engines. Due to the stochastic behavior of knocking combustion, analytical cycle studies are required. However, there are many problems to be addressed with regard to the individual cycle analysis of in-cylinder pressure data. This study thus proposes novel, comprehensive and efficient methodologies for evaluating the knocking combustion in the internal combustion engine. The proposed methodologies include a filtering method for the in-cylinder pressure, the determination of the knock onset, and the calculation of the residual gas fraction. Consequently, a smart knock onset model with high accuracy could be developed using a supervised deep learning that was not available in the past. Moreover, an improved zero-dimensional (0D) estimation model for the residual gas fraction was developed to obtain better accuracy for closed system analysis. Finally, based on a cyclic analysis, a knock prediction model is suggested; the model uses 0D ignition delay correlation under various experimental conditions including aggressive cam phase shifting by a dual variable valve timing (VVT) system. Using the proposed analysis method, insight into stochastic knocking combustion can be obtained, and a faster combustion speed can lead to a higher knock intensity in a steady-state operation.

Plants absorb melatonin from the environments as well as they synthesize the regulatory molecule. We applied melatonin to the roots of maize (Zea mays) seedlings and examined its accumulation in the leaves. Melatonin accumulation in the leaves was proportional to the exogenously applied concentrations up to 5 mM, without saturation. Time-course analysis of the accumulated melatonin content did not show an adaptable (or desensitizable) uptake system over a 24-h period. Melatonin accumulation in the leaves was reduced significantly by the plant hormones abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA), which commonly cause stomatal closure. The application of ABA and benzo-18-crown-6 (18-CR, a stomata-closing agent) induced stomatal closure and simultaneously decreased melatonin content in the leaves. When plants were shielded from airflow in the growth chamber, melatonin accumulation in the leaves decreased, indicating the influence of reduced transpiration. We conclude that melatonin applied exogenously to the root system is absorbed, mobilized upward according to the transpirational flow, and finally accumulated in the leaves.

The composition of fine-ground lead zirconate-titanate powder Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3, suspended in PZT and bismuth titanate (BiT) solutions, is deposited on the curved surface of IN718 and IN738 nickel-based supper alloy substrates up to 100 µm thickness. Photochemical metal organic and infiltration techniques are implemented to produce smooth, semi-dense, and crack-free random orientated thick piezoelectric films as piezo-sensors, free of any dopants or thickening polymers. Every single layer of the deposited films is heated at 200 °C with 10 wt.% excess PbO, irradiated by ultraviolet lamp (365 nm, 6 watt) for 10 min, pyrolyzed at 400 °C, and subsequently annealed at 700 °C for one hour. This process is repeated successively until reaching the desired thickness. Au and Pt thin films are deposited as the bottom and top electrodes using evaporation and sputtering methods, respectively. PZT/PZT and PZT/BiT composite films are then characterized and compared to similar PZT and BiT thick films deposited on the similar substrates. The effect of the composition and deposition process is also investigated on the crystalline phase development and microstructure morphology as well as the dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of piezo-films. The maximum remnant polarization of Pr = 22.37 ± 0.01, 30.01 ± 0.01 µC/cm2, the permittivity of εr = 298 ± 3, 566 ± 5, and piezoelectric charge coefficient of d33 = 126, 148 m/V were measured versus the minimum coercive field of Ec = 50, 20 kV/cm for the PZT/PZT and PZT/BiT thick films, respectively. The thick film piezo-sensors are developed to be potentially used at frequency bandwidth of 1⁻5 MHz for rotary structural health monitoring and also in other industrial or medical applications as a transceiver.

The zea1 mutant of marine microalga Dunaliella tertiolecta accumulates zeaxanthin under normal growth conditions, and its phenotype has been speculated to be related to zeaxanthin epoxidase (ZEP). In this study, we isolated the ZEP gene from both wild-type D. tertiolecta and the mutant. We found that the zea1 mutant has a point mutation of the 1337th nucleotide of the ZEP sequence (a change from guanine to adenine), resulting in a change of glycine to aspartate in a highly conserved region in the catalytic domain. Similar expression levels of ZEP mRNA and protein in both wild-type and zea1 were confirmed by using qRT-PCR and western blot analysis, respectively. Additionally, the enzyme activity analysis of ZEPs in the presence of cofactors showed that the inactivation of ZEP in zea1 was not caused by deficiency in the levels of cofactors. From the predicted three-dimensional ZEP structure of zea1, we observed a conformational change on the substrate-binding site in the ZEP. A comparative analysis of the ZEP structures suggested that the conformational change induced by a single amino acid mutation might impact the interaction between the substrate and substrate-binding site, resulting in loss of zeaxanthin epoxidase function.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals reflect muscle contraction and hence, can provide information regarding a user’s movement intention. High-density sEMG systems have been proposed to measure muscle activity in small areas and to estimate complex motion using spatial patterns. However, conventional systems based on wet electrodes have several limitations. For example, the electrolyte enclosed in wet electrodes restricts spatial resolution, and these conventional bulky systems limit natural movements. In this paper, a microneedle-based high-density electrode array on a circuit integrated flexible substrate for sEMG is proposed. Microneedles allow for high spatial resolution without requiring conductive substances, and flexible substrates guarantee stable skin–electrode contact. Moreover, a compact signal processing system is integrated with the electrode array. Therefore, sEMG measurements are comfortable to the user and do not interfere with the movement. The system performance was demonstrated by testing its operation and estimating motion using a Gaussian mixture model-based, simplified 2D spatial pattern.

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) protecting the cells against freezing are produced in response to extremely low temperatures in diverse psychrophilic organisms, and they are encoded by multiple gene families. The AFP of Antarctic marine diatom Chaetoceros neogracile is reported in our previous research, but like other microalgae, was considered to probably have additional genes coding AFPs. In this paper, we reported the cloning and characterization of additional AFP gene from C. neogracile (Cn-isoAFP). Cn-isoAFP protein is 74.6% identical to the previously reported Cn-AFP. The promoter sequence of Cn-isoAFP contains environmental stress responsive elements for cold, thermal, and high light conditions. Cn-isoAFP transcription levels increased dramatically when cells were exposed to freezing (−20 °C), thermal (10 °C), or high light (600 μmol photon m−2 s−1) stresses. The thermal hysteresis (TH) activity of recombinant Cn-isoAFP was 0.8 °C at a protein concentration of 5 mg/mL. Results from homology modeling and TH activity analysis of site-directed mutant proteins elucidated AFP mechanism to be a result of flatness of B-face maintained via hydrophobic interactions.
