Sargassum horneri is a seaweed species with diverse bioactivities. However, its antifibrotic effects during nasal polyp (NP) formation are not clearly understood. Therefore, we investigated the inhibitory effect of S. horneri on fibrosis progression in NP-derived fibroblasts (NPDFs) and NP tissues ex vivo. NPDFs were stimulated with TGF-β1 in the presence or absence of S. horneri ethanol extract (SHE). The extracellular matrix (ECM) protein production levels, myofibroblast differentiation (α-smooth muscle actin, α-SMA), and phosphorylation of Smad 2/3 and -ERK in TGF-β1-stimulated NPDFs were investigated using western blotting. Further, the contractile activity of SHE was assessed by performing a collagen gel contraction assay. The expression levels of collagen-1, fibronectin, and α-SMA were investigated in NP organ cultures treated with SHE. TGF-β1 stimulated ECM protein expression, myofibroblast differentiation, and collagen contractile activity while these were attenuated by pretreatment with SHE. We also found antifibrotic effect of SHE on ex vivo NP tissues. The antifibrotic effects of SHE were modulated through the attenuation of Smad 2/3 and ERK signaling pathways in TGF-β1-stimulated NPDFs. In conclusion, SHE inhibited ECM protein accumulation and myofibroblast differentiation during NP remodeling. Thus, SHE may be helpful as a treatment for NP recurrence after endoscopic sinus surgery.

Human motion tracking is widely applied to rehabilitation tasks, and inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors are a well-known approach for recording motion behavior. IMU sensors can provide accurate information regarding three-dimensional (3D) human motion. However, IMU sensors must be attached to the body, which can be inconvenient or uncomfortable for users. To alleviate this issue, a visual-based tracking system from two-dimensional (2D) RGB images has been studied extensively in recent years and proven to have a suitable performance for human motion tracking. However, the 2D image system has its limitations. Specifically, human motion consists of spatial changes, and the 3D motion features predicted from the 2D images have limitations. In this study, we propose a deep learning (DL) human motion tracking technology using 3D image features with a deep bidirectional long short-term memory (DBLSTM) mechanism model. The experimental results show that, compared with the traditional 2D image system, the proposed system provides improved human motion tracking ability with RMSE in acceleration less than 0.5 (m/s2) X, Y, and Z directions. These findings suggest that the proposed model is a viable approach for future human motion tracking applications.

Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) composed of double-twisted cholesteric helices are promising materials for use in next-generation displays, optical components, and photonics applications. However, BPLCs are only observed in a narrow temperature range of 0.5–3 °C and must be stabilized with a polymer network. Here, we report on controlling the phase behavior of BPLCs by varying the concentration of an amorphous crosslinker (pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA)). LC mixtures without amorphous crosslinker display narrow phase transition temperatures from isotropic to the blue phase-II (BP-II), blue phase-I (BP-I), and cholesteric phases, but the addition of PETA stabilizes the BP-I phase. A PETA content above 3 wt% prevents the formation of the simple cubic BP-II phase and induces a direct transition from the isotropic to the BP-I phase. PETA widens the temperature window of BP-I from ~6.8 °C for BPLC without PETA to ~15 °C for BPLC with 4 wt% PETA. The BPLCs with 3 and 4 wt% PETA are stabilized using polymer networks via in situ photopolymerization. Polymer-stabilized BPLC with 3 wt% PETA showed switching between reflective to transparent states with response times of 400–500 μs when an AC field was applied, whereas the application of a DC field induced a large color change from green to red.

Heavy metals are defined as metals with relatively high density and atomic weight, and their various applications have raised serious concerns about the environmental impacts and potential human health effects. Chromium is an important heavy metal that is involved in biological metabolism, but Cr exposure can induce a severe impact on occupational workers or public health. In this study, we explore the toxic effects of Cr exposure through three exposure routes: dermal contact, inhalation, and ingestion. We propose the underlying toxicity mechanisms of Cr exposure based on transcriptomic data and various bioinformatic tools. Our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity mechanisms of different Cr exposure routes by diverse bioinformatics analyses.

Syntenin acts as an adaptor and scaffold protein through its two PSD-95, Dlg, and ZO-1 (PDZ) domains, participating in multiple signaling pathways and modulating cellular physiology. It has been identified as an oncogene, promoting cancer development, metastasis, and angiogenesis in various carcinomas. Syntenin-1 is also associated with the production and release of exosomes, small extracellular vesicles that play a significant role in intercellular communication by containing bioactive molecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. The trafficking of exosomes involves a complex interplay of various regulatory proteins, including syntenin-1, which interacts with its binding partners, syndecan and activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALIX). Exosomal transfer of microRNAs, a key cargo, can regulate the expression of various cancer-related genes, including syntenin-1. Targeting the mechanism involving the regulation of exosomes by syntenin-1 and microRNAs may provide a novel treatment strategy for cancer. This review highlights the current understanding of syntenin-1’s role in regulating exosome trafficking and its associated cellular signaling pathways.

Hyperbilirubinemia is a common pathological condition in neonates. Free bilirubin can penetrate the blood–brain barrier (BBB), which can lead to bilirubin neurotoxicity. In the context of predicting the risk of bilirubin neurotoxicity, although the specificity and sensitivity of free bilirubin levels are higher than those of total serum bilirubin (TSB), free bilirubin is not widely monitored in clinical practice. The threshold TSB levels at which phototherapy must be administered have been established previously. However, TSB levels are not well correlated with neurodevelopmental outcomes. Currently, TSB levels are commonly used to guide phototherapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Some clinical drugs can displace bilirubin from its albumin-binding sites, and consequently upregulate plasma bilirubin. Daily dosages play a vital role in regulating bilirubin levels. A drug with both a high protein binding capacity and high daily dosage significantly increases bilirubin levels in infants. Premature or very low birth weight (VLBW) infants are vulnerable to the upregulation of bilirubin levels as they exhibit the lowest reserve albumin levels and consequently the highest bilirubin toxicity index. Because bilirubin is involved in maintaining the balance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant agents, the downregulation of bilirubin levels is not always desirable. This review provides insights into the impact of protein binding capacity and daily dosage of drugs on the bilirubin levels in susceptible infants.

Food sensitization in early life identifies children at risk of developing allergic diseases. We investigated the sensitization to cow milk (CM), egg whites, and wheat. Newborns and infants under 3 years of age with available specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) data were identified. A retrospective survey was conducted using data from the Chang Gung Research Database. Perinatal characteristics, such as singleton or multiples in a single pregnancy, parity, meconium staining, maternal age, spontaneous delivery or cesarean section, meconium passage, weeks of gestation, birth length, body weight, head and chest circumferences, and season, were obtained. The data on sIgE were collected, and a logistic regression model was used to determine the odds of sensitization. Positive sIgE for CM and egg whites was more likely to occur in boys than in girls. Early-life egg white and wheat sensitization was associated with increased birth body length and weight. A multivariate analysis indicated an association between egg white sIgE positivity and logarithmic total IgE. Higher total IgE levels and younger age were associated with egg white sensitization, and elevated weight and length at birth were linked to food sensitization, particularly to egg whites and wheat.

As the development of autonomous ships is underway in the maritime industry, the automation of ship spare part management has become an important issue. However, there has been little development of dedicated devices or applications for ships. This study aims to develop a Raspberry Pi-based embedded application that identifies the type and quantity of spare parts using a transfer learning model and image processing algorithm suitable for ship spare part recognition. A newly improved image processing algorithm was used to select a transfer learning model that balances accuracy and training speed through training and validation on a real spare parts dataset, achieving a prediction accuracy of 98.2% and a training time of 158 s. The experimental device utilizing this model used a camera to identify the type and quantity of spare parts on an actual ship. It displayed the spare parts list on a remotely connected computer. The ASSM (Automated Ship Spare-Part Management) device utilizing image processing and transfer learning is a new technology that successfully automates spare part management.

Oxidative stress and cellular senescence in dermal papilla cells (DPCs) are major etiological factors causing hair loss. In this study, the effect of the Allium hookeri extract (AHE) on hair-inductive and anti-oxidative properties was investigated in human DPCs. As a result, it was found that a non-cytotoxic concentration of the extracts increased the viability and size of the human DPC spheroid, which was associated with the increased expression of hair-growth-related genes in cells. To determine whether or not these effects could be attributed to intracellular anti-oxidative effects, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry alongside various biochemical analyses are conducted herein. An ingredient called alliin was identified as one of the main components. Furthermore, AHE treatment induced a significant decrease in H2O2-mediated cytotoxicities, cell death, and cellular senescence in human DPCs. Upon analyzing these results with a molecular mechanism approach, it was shown that AHE treatment increased β-Catenin and NRF2 translocation into the nucleus while inhibiting the translocation of NF-κB (p50) through p38 and PKA-mediated phosphorylations of GSK3β, an upstream regulator of those proteins. These results overall indicate the possibility that AHE can regulate GSK3β-mediated β-Catenin, NRF2, and NF-κB signaling to enhance hair-inductive properties and ultimately protect against oxidative stress-induced cellular damage in human DPCs.

Beneficial microorganisms can increase nutrient digestion and absorption in farmed fish. This study investigates the effects of supplemental feeding of Bacillus species isolated from the intestines of wild glass eels on the growth, survival, and gene expression of farm-raised eel larvae for 30 days after hatching. Three species of Bacillus (B. velezensis, AJBV; B. subtilis, AJBS; B. licheniformis, AJBL) without hemolytic activity were isolated, and an experiment compared the growth of eel larvae fed an artificial diet supplemented with each Bacillus species. There were no significant differences in the total length and body depth of eel larvae at 30 days after hatching in all groups. During the feeding period, 149 eels survived from the initial 1000 in the control group. On the other hand, 240, 178, and 141 eels survived in the AJBV, AJBS, and AJBL groups, respectively. However, there were no significant differences in survival rates despite the difference in the number of surviving eel larvae among the groups. In the comparison of gene expression of genes involved with growth (growth hormone, growth hormone receptor 1, insulin-like growth factor II-2) and those involved with digestive enzymes (amylase, trypsin, lipase), there were also no significant differences among the groups. Our results confirm that dietary supplementation with each of the three host-associated Bacillus does not affect the growth and survival rates of eel larvae reared on an artificial diet up to the first 30 days after hatching, nor does it significantly affect related gene expression.

Krukovine (KV) is an alkaloid isolated from the bark of Abuta grandifolia (Mart.) Sandw. (Menispermaceae) with anticancer potential in some cancers with KRAS mutations. In this study, we explored the anticancer efficacy and mechanism of KV in oxaliplatin-resistant pancreatic cancer cells and patient-derived pancreatic cancer organoids (PDPCOs) with KRAS mutation. After treatment with KV, mRNA and protein levels were determined by RNA-seq and Western blotting, respectively. Cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were measured by MTT, scratch wound healing assay, and transwell analysis, respectively. Patient-derived pancreatic cancer organoids (PDPCOs) with KRAS mutations were treated with KV, oxaliplatin (OXA), and a combination of KV and OXA. KV suppresses tumor progression via the downregulation of the Erk-RPS6K-TMEM139 and PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathways in oxaliplatin-resistant AsPC-1 cells. Furthermore, KV showed an antiproliferative effect in PDPCOs, and the combination of OXA and KV inhibited PDPCO growth more effectively than either drug alone.

Peripheral facial nerve injury leads to changes in the expression of various neuroactive substances that affect nerve cell damage, survival, growth, and regeneration. In the case of peripheral facial nerve damage, the injury directly affects the peripheral nerves and induces changes in the central nervous system (CNS) through various factors, but the substances involved in these changes in the CNS are not well understood. The objective of this review is to investigate the biomolecules involved in peripheral facial nerve damage so as to gain insight into the mechanisms and limitations of targeting the CNS after such damage and identify potential facial nerve treatment strategies. To this end, we searched PubMed using keywords and exclusion criteria and selected 29 eligible experimental studies. Our analysis summarizes basic experimental studies on changes in the CNS following peripheral facial nerve damage, focusing on biomolecules that increase or decrease in the CNS and/or those involved in the damage, and reviews various approaches for treating facial nerve injury. By establishing the biomolecules in the CNS that change after peripheral nerve damage, we can expect to identify factors that play an important role in functional recovery from facial nerve damage. Accordingly, this review could represent a significant step toward developing treatment strategies for peripheral facial palsy.

Nature is highly efficient at producing chiral compounds that are enantiomerically pure. The inherent chirality of naturally occurring biomolecules means that many have the potential to be used as chiral dopants for cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) systems. Though many biomolecules have been identified as chiral dopants, many remain yet to be probed for their ability to function as chiral dopants. Here, 10 naturally occurring biomolecules comprised of steroids and bile acids were tested as chiral dopants for CLCs. Progesterone was identified as having high miscibility with nematic liquid crystals and was used in responsive liquid crystal devices. Progesterone-doped CLC devices were fabricated to exhibit either normal mode or reverse mode switchable behavior. Polymer stabilized CLCs (PSCLC) devices exhibiting dynamic electro-optic red- and blue-tuning behaviors were also fabricated. Furthermore, immiscible lithocholic acid was synthetically modified to afford two derivatives that were miscible at 10 wt. % in nematic liquid crystals. The two lithocholic acid derivatives were used as chiral dopants and incorporated into polymer stabilized CLCs which exhibited blue tuning behavior.

Grain shape is one of the key factors deciding the yield product and the market value as appearance quality in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The grain shape of japonica cultivars in Korea is quite monotonous because the selection pressure of rice breeding programs works in consideration of consumer preference. In this study, we identified QTLs associated with grain shape to improve the variety of grain shapes in Korean cultivars. QTL analysis revealed that eight QTLs related to five tested traits were detected on chromosomes 2, 5, and 10. Among them, three QTLs—qGL2 (33.9% of PEV for grain length), qGW5 (64.42% for grain width), and qGT10 (49.2% for grain thickness)—were regarded as the main effect QTLs. Using the three QTLs, an ideal QTL combination (qGL2P + qGW5P + qGT10B) could be constructed on the basis of the accumulated QTL effect without yield loss caused by the change in grain shape in the population. In addition, three promising lines with a slender grain type were selected as a breeding resource with a japonica genetic background based on the QTL combination. The application of QTLs detected in this study could improve the grain shape of japonica cultivars without any linkage drag or yield loss.

(1) Objective: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a recurring skin disease that affects children’s daily activities and sleep quality. Due to the limitations of children’s understanding and ability to express themselves, shared decision making (SDM) is often made by guardians, which thus affects the acceptance and effectiveness of children’s treatments. Previous studies have demonstrated that involving both children and parents in decision making may help improve treatment outcomes; thus, we designed a multimedia mixed reality (MR) interactive game of SDM for children with moderate to severe AD. (2) Methods: Research participants included 6–18-year-old patients with moderate to severe AD. This research consisted of the following steps: designing SDM; character setting and visual design; performing games; system modification and optimization; screen editing and dubbing; and user testing and questionnaires by the System Usability Scale (SUS). (3) Results: We completed the SDM design for children with moderate to severe AD. Four different treatments were biologics, oral immune-modulating drugs, phototherapy, and wet wrap. An animated PowerPoint slide showed the AD apple rolling around before treatments and the AD apple sleeping soundly after treatments. Instructions with video teaching for the four different treatments were played, and then, the MR was turned on so that the patients could help the AD apple in the metaverse to undergo these four treatments. A total of 12 moderate to severe AD patients and six control patients used the game, all aged between six and eighteen years old, with an average SUS score of 81.0 and a standard error of 2.1 points. Adjective ratings yielded a rating between good and excellent. The game showed acceptable usability. We found no statistically significant differences in SUS scores between patients with and without moderate to severe AD or between boys and girls nor significant associations between SUS and age or severity. The analysis identified that the two items with the lowest SUS scores were “I think that I would need the support of a technical person to be able to use this product” and “I needed to learn a lot of things before I could get going with this product”. Both of these comments show the limitations of this game. (4) Conclusions: Overall, this study provides the first MR SDM game that has passed the SUS and can be used as an aid in clinical SDM.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes transitory or permanent neurological and cognitive impairments, which can intensify over time due to secondary neuronal death. However, no therapy currently exists that can effectively treat brain injury following TBI. Here, we evaluate the therapeutic potential of irradiated engineered human mesenchymal stem cells over-expressing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which we denote by BDNF-eMSCs, in protecting the brain against neuronal death, neurological deficits, and cognitive impairment in TBI rats. BDNF-eMSCs were administered directly into the left lateral ventricle of the brain in rats that received TBI damage. A single administration of BDNF-eMSCs reduced TBI-induced neuronal death and glial activation in the hippocampus, while repeated administration of BDNF-eMSCs reduced not only glial activation and delayed neuronal loss but also enhanced hippocampal neurogenesis in TBI rats. In addition, BDNF-eMSCs reduced the lesion area in the damaged brain of the rats. Behaviorally, BDNF-eMSC treatment improved the neurological and cognitive functions of the TBI rats. The results presented in this study demonstrate that BDNF-eMSCs can attenuate TBI-induced brain damage through the suppression of neuronal death and increased neurogenesis, thus enhancing functional recovery after TBI, indicating the significant therapeutic potential of BDNF-eMSCs in the treatment of TBI.

Adipose tissue is a recognized energy storage organ during excessive energy intake and an endocrine and thermoregulator, which interacts with other tissues to regulate systemic metabolism. Adipose tissue dysfunction is observed in most obese mouse models and humans. However, most studies using mouse models were conducted at room temperature (RT), where mice were chronically exposed to mild cold. In this condition, energy use is prioritized for thermogenesis to maintain body temperature in mice. It also leads to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, followed by the activation of β-adrenergic signaling. As humans live primarily in their thermoneutral (TN) zone, RT housing for mice limits the interpretation of disease studies from mouse models to humans. Therefore, housing mice in their TN zone (~28–30 °C) can be considered to mimic humans physiologically. However, factors such as temperature ranges and TN pre-acclimatization periods should be examined to obtain reliable results. In this review, we discuss how adipose tissue responds to housing temperature and the outcomes of the TN zone in metabolic disease studies. This review highlights the critical role of TN housing in mouse models for studying adipose tissue function and human metabolic diseases.

Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) are molecules that can self-assemble into helicoidal superstructures exhibiting circularly polarized reflection. The facile self-assembly and resulting optical properties makes CLCs a promising technology for an array of industrial applications, including reflective displays, tunable mirror-less lasers, optical storage, tunable color filters, and smart windows. The helicoidal structure of CLC can be stabilized via in situ photopolymerization of liquid crystal monomers in a CLC mixture, resulting in polymer-stabilized CLCs (PSCLCs). PSCLCs exhibit a dynamic optical response that can be induced by external stimuli, including electric fields, heat, and light. In this review, we discuss the electro-optic response and potential mechanism of PSCLCs reported over the past decade. Multiple electro-optic responses in PSCLCs with negative or positive dielectric anisotropy have been identified, including bandwidth broadening, red and blue tuning, and switching the reflection notch when an electric field is applied. The reconfigurable optical response of PSCLCs with positive dielectric anisotropy is also discussed. That is, red tuning (or broadening) by applying a DC field and switching by applying an AC field were both observed for the first time in a PSCLC sample. Finally, we discuss the potential mechanism for the dynamic response in PSCLCs.

Febrile convulsion (FC) is the most common seizure disease in children, which occurs with a fever. We investigated the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data of patients aged between 6 months and 5 years at the time of FC diagnosis. Diseases that can cause seizures with fever, such as neoplasms, metabolic disorders, nervous system disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, perinatal problems, and congenital abnormalities, were excluded. Weekly virus-positive detection rate (PDR) data were obtained from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency for adenovirus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), influenza virus, coronavirus (HCoV), rhinovirus (HRV), bocavirus, metapneumovirus (HMPV), rotavirus, norovirus, and astrovirus. Using the Granger test, we then analyzed the monthly PDR and investigated the association between FC incidence and monthly PDR. We additionally identified monthly and seasonal FC incidence trends using the autoregressive integrated moving average. Between 2015 and 2019, 64,291 patients were diagnosed with FC. Annually, the incidence was the highest in May and the lowest in October. Most patients were diagnosed during the spring (26.7%). The PDRs for HRSV, HCoV, HRV, HMPV, and norovirus were associated with FC incidence after 1 month.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the potential and merits of narrative-based virtual fieldwork in preservice geography teacher education. Virtual fieldwork can effectively complement, implement, and foster fieldwork. In addition, narrative is closely related to fieldwork. To proceed with the research, this study developed a travel geography class for PGTs (primary geography teachers) that included narrative-based fieldwork assignments. This study deduced four themes to illuminate the potential of narrative-based virtual fieldwork (NVF) by using a phenomenographic analysis of the reflective journals written by the participating preservice geography teachers who completed their NVF assignments. The results of this study suggested that the NVF possibly involves the PGTs’ engagement in, procedural and contextual understanding of, and teaching knowledge of virtual fieldwork thanks to its specific characteristic of integrating narrative and virtual fieldwork. The results of this study provide concrete discussions on the potential and merits of NVF in PGTE.

There is an increasing urgency in the search for new drugs to target high-grade cancers such as osteosarcomas (OS), as these have limited therapeutic options and poor prognostic outlook. Even though key molecular events leading to tumorigenesis are not well understood, it is widely agreed that OS tumours are Wnt-driven. ETC-159, a PORCN inhibitor that inhibits the extracellular secretion of Wnt, has recently progressed on to clinical trials. In vitro and in vivo murine and chick chorioallantoic membrane xenograft models were established to examine the effect of ETC-159 on OS. Consistent with our hypothesis, we noted that ETC-159 treatment not only resulted in markedly decreased β-catenin staining in xenografts, but also increased tumour necrosis and a significant reduction in vascularity—a hereby yet undescribed phenotype following ETC-159 treatment. Through further understanding the mechanism of this new window of vulnerability, therapies can be developed to potentiate and maximize the effectiveness of ETC-159, further increasing its clinical utility for the treatment of OS.

We propose a method for rapid prototyping of a three-phase AC drive system for educational purposes. The proposed method allows college students to design and manufacture a drive system comprising three-phase inverters, a permanent-magnet (PM) machine, a controller, and sensors within a semester. The rapid prototyping process, which requires less than a day, enables efficient iteration and testing during the development process. In addition to addressing the electrical design considerations, this study also addresses the mechanical aspects of the drive system, including the use of coreless PM machines fabricated, using additive manufacturing technology, and the inverter manufacturing process, utilizing an auto-milling machine. Finally, we provide details of the rapid prototyping of closed-loop control, based on sensor feedback to regulate the rotating magnetic fields and output torque.

Bacterial co-culture studies using synthetic gut microbiomes have reported novel research designs to understand the underlying role of bacterial interaction in the metabolism of dietary resources and community assembly of complex microflora. Since lab-on-a-chip mimicking the gut (hereafter “gut-on-a-chip”) is one of the most advanced platforms for the simulative research regarding the correlation between host health and microbiota, the co-culture of the synthetic bacterial community in gut-on-a-chip is expected to reveal the diet–microbiota relationship. This critical review analyzed recent research on bacterial co-culture with perspectives on the ecological niche of commensals, probiotics, and pathogens to categorize the experimental approaches for diet-mediated management of gut health as the compositional and/or metabolic modulation of the microbiota and the control of pathogens. Meanwhile, the aim of previous research on bacterial culture in gut-on-a-chip has been mainly limited to the maintenance of the viability of host cells. Thus, the integration of study designs established for the co-culture of synthetic gut consortia with various nutritional resources into gut-on-a-chip is expected to reveal bacterial interspecies interactions related to specific dietary patterns. This critical review suggests novel research topics for co-culturing bacterial communities in gut-on-a-chip to realize an ideal experimental platform mimicking a complex intestinal environment.

In this study, the effects of polyimide (PI) content and postcuring on thermal and mechanical properties in PI and epoxy (EP) blending systems were investigated. EP/PI (EPI) blending reduced the crosslinking density and improved the flexural and impact strength due to ductility. On the other hand, in the postcuring of EPI, the thermal resistance improved due to the increased crosslinking density and the flexural strength increased by up to 57.89% due to the enhanced stiffness, but the impact strength decreased by up to 59.54%. EPI blending induced the improvement in the mechanical properties of EP, and the postcuring process of EPI was shown to be an effective method to improve heat resistance. It was confirmed that EPI blending induces improvement in the mechanical properties of EP, and the postcuring process of EPI is an effective method for improving heat resistance.

The pulsed electric field (PEF) is a non-thermal food processing technology that induces electroporation of the cell membrane thus improving mass transfer through the cell membrane. In this study, the drying and rehydration kinetics, microstructure, and carotenoid content of carrot (Daucus carota) pretreated by PEF during convective drying at 50 °C were investigated. The PEF treatment was conducted with different field strengths (1.0–2.5 kV/cm) using a fixed pulse width of 20 µs and at a pulse frequency of 50 Hz. The PEF 2.5 kV/cm showed the shortest drying time, taking 180 min, whereas the control required 330 min for the same moisture ratio, indicating a 45% reduction in drying time. The rehydration ability also increased as the strengths of PEF increased. PEF 2.5 kV/cm resulted in 27.58% increase in moisture content compared to the control after rehydration (1 h). Three mathematical models were applied to the drying and rehydration data; the Page and Peleg models were selected as the most appropriate models to describe the drying and rehydration kinetics, respectively. The cutting force of the sample was decreased as the strength of PEF increased, and a more homogeneous cellular structure was observed in the PEF pretreatment group. The reduction in drying time by PEF was beneficial to the carotenoid content, and PEF 2.5 kV/cm showed the highest preservation content of carotenoid. Overall, these results suggested that the pretreatment of PEF and the drying and rehydration rate influence the quality of products, functional components, and cellular structure.

Oxylipins are important biological molecules with diverse roles in human and plants such as pro-/anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and regulatory activity. Although there is an increasing number of plant-derived oxylipins, most of their physiological roles in humans remain unclear. Here, we describe the isolation, identification, and biological activities of four new oxylipins, chaenomesters A–D (1–4), along with a known compound (5), obtained from Chaenomeles sinensis twigs. Their chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic (i.e., NMR) and spectrometric (i.e., HRMS) data analysis including 1H NMR-based empirical rules and homonuclear-decoupled 1H NMR experiments. Chaenomester D (4), an omega-3 oxylipin, showed a potent inhibitory effect on nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated BV-2 cells (NO production, 8.46 ± 0.68 μM), neurotrophic activity in C6 cells through the induction of the secretion of nerve growth factor (NGF, 157.7 ± 2.4%), and cytotoxicity in A549 human cancer cell lines (IC50 = 27.4 μM).

This study aimed to evaluate children with lymphoblastic leukemia and examine the potential correlation between corticospinal tract (CST) injury and motor dysfunction prior to chemotherapy using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). Nineteen consecutive patients with childhood leukemia (mean age 7.483 ± 3.1 years, range 4–12 years) with unilateral motor dysfunction who underwent DTT prior to chemotherapy and twenty healthy individuals (mean age 7.478 ± 1.2 years; range 4–12 years) were enrolled. Motor functions were evaluated by two independent investigators. The cause of neurological dysfunction was identified based on the CST state using mean fractional anisotropy (FA), mean fiber volume (FV), and CST integrity using DTT. All patients showed disrupted integrity and significantly decreased FA and FV in the affected CST compared to the unaffected CST and the control group (p < 0.05). These DTT results also corresponded to patients’ unilateral motor dysfunction. Using DTT, we demonstrated that neurological dysfunction may occur in patients with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia even prior to chemotherapy, and that CST injuries correlate with motor dysfunction in these patients. DTT may be a useful modality for evaluating the neural tract state in pediatric leukemia patients with neurological dysfunction.

Multi-environment trials (METs) are essential in plant breeding programs to evaluate crop productivity and adaptability in diverse environments. In this study, we demonstrated the practical use of METs to evaluate grain yield and yield-related traits using 276 Korean rice cultivars, divided into three maturity groups (81 early-, 90 medium-, and 105 medium–late-maturing cultivars) grown in three regions (Jeonju, Suwon, and Miryang) and two planting seasons (early and regular planting) for two years. Due to the narrow genetic variability of the commercial cultivars, which are cultivated in relatively similar environmental conditions, genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) effects were not statistically significant. However, genotype and environment evaluation using GGE biplot analysis exhibited distinct patterns of mega-environment formation, winning genotypes, ranking genotypes, discriminating power, and representativeness according to the differences in planting seasons and regions. Moreover, the simultaneous selection of stable high-performance genotypes using a weighted average of absolute scores from the singular-value decomposition of the matrix of BLUPs (WAASB) and a multi-trait stability index (MTSI) revealed six recommended genotypes each for early-maturing (Manho, Namil, Unkwang, Odae 1ho, Sinunbong 1ho, and Jonong) and medium-maturing (Sobi, Cheongdam, Shinbaeg, Boramchal, Mimyeon, and Saemimyeon) cultivars, and four genotypes for medium–late-maturing cultivars (Hanmauem, Dami, Baegseolchal, and Hangangchalbyeo). The winning genotypes of each trait can be used as parents to develop regional specialty cultivars by fine-tuning favorable traits, and recommended genotypes can be utilized as elite climate-resilient parents that can aid breeders in improving yield potential and stability across the planting seasons and regions.

A new small-signal modeling of a three-level boost (TLB) converter, as well as the design methodology for a double-loop controller, are presented in this paper. Unlike the conventional modeling of the TLB converter, which involves three state variables, the suggested modeling is based on two state variables; hence, simple transfer functions can be obtained. The proposed method is operable at a full duty ratio using unified modeling approaches, regardless of the mode changes. The analysis shows that the transfer functions of the two operation modes are identical. This suggests that the small-signal modeling of the TLB converter is identical to that of a conventional single-level boost converter. Hence, this implies that a linear feedback controller is applicable for all operational ranges. The method to design a double-loop controller using a proportional-integral controller is shown in a stepwise sequence. In addition, a capacitor voltage unbalancing controller is described. Simulations and experimental verifications are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the small-signal analysis and control system design.

We construct a model of differential K-theory using superbundles with a Z/2Z-graded connection and a differential form on the base manifold and prove that our model is isomorphic to the Freed–Lott–Klonoff model of differential K-theory.

The assumption of the Convergence–Confinement Method (CCM) is the analysis of the interaction behavior of the support and ground of a deep circular tunnel under an isotropic stress field. Aiming to improve this method, this paper proposes a discussion on the influence of the overburden depth and stress anisotropy. To consider the influence of the overburden effect, the ground reaction in different depths due to tunnel advancing excavation is investigated. Under anisotropic stress conditions, the analytical solutions of the stress/displacement in the plastic and elastic regions of this ground reaction can also be suitable for theoretical analysis in a consistent manner. The key factor in this study is the use of confinement loss, which can not only describe the simulation of tunnel advancing effects but also become a superimposed value of the incremental procedure. In addition, the calculation spreadsheets can be used to estimate and implement the theoretical analytical solutions into executable computational solutions. To check the validity of the analytical solution, finite element analysis is used to examine the distribution of stress/displacement around the tunnel, especially the distribution along the overburden pressure line in the circular tunnel cross-section. Comparing the analytical solution calculated by the incremental procedure with the result of the numerical analysis shows a consistent trend.

The appropriate strategy for enteral feeding remains a matter of debate. We hypothesized that continuous enteral feeding would result in higher rates of achieving target nutrition during the first 7 days compared with intermittent enteral feeding. We conducted an unblinded, single-center, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial involving adult patients admitted to the medical intensive care unit who required mechanical ventilation to determine the efficacy and safety of continuous enteral feeding for critically ill patients compared with intermittent enteral feeding. The primary endpoint was the achievement of ≥80% of the target nutrition requirement during the first 7 days after starting enteral feeding. A total of 99 patients were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis (intermittent enteral feeding group, n = 49; continuous enteral feeding group, n = 50). The intermittent enteral feeding group and continuous enteral feeding group received 227 days and 226 days of enteral feeding, respectively. The achievement of ≥80% of the target nutrition requirement occurred significantly more frequently in the continuous enteral feeding group than in the intermittent enteral feeding group (65.0% versus 52.4%, respectively; relative risk, 1.24; 95% confidence interval, 1.06–1.45; p = 0.008). For patients undergoing mechanical ventilation, continuous enteral feeding significantly improved the achievement of target nutrition requirements.

Designing a configuration of an efficient solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system and operating it under appropriate conditions are important for achieving a highly efficient SOFC system. In our previous research, the system layout of a SOFC system with anode off-gas recirculation was suggested, and the system performance was examined using a numerical model. In the present study, the system operating conditions were optimized based on the system configuration and numerical model developed in the previous paper. First, a parametric sensitivity analysis of the system performance was investigated to demonstrate the main operating parameters. Consequently, the fuel flow rate and recirculation ratio were selected. Then, the available operating conditions, which keep the system below the operating limits and satisfy the desired system performance (Ufuel > 0.7 and ηelec > 45%) were discovered. Finally, optimized operating conditions were suggested for three operating modes: optimized electrical efficiency, peak power, and heat generation. Depending on the situation, the demand for electricity and heat can be different, so different proper operating points are suggested for each mode. Additionally, using the developed model and the conducted process of this study, various optimized operating conditions can be derived for diverse cases.

A 14-year-old neutered male British shorthair cat presented with a 21-day history of persistent erection and dysuria, along with overgrooming of the perineal region. Mild palpation induced pain and rigid corpora cavernosa with flaccid glans were observed during physical examination. Ultrasonography of the penis did not detect significant blood flow in the penile cavernosal artery. The drawing of aspirate blood from cavernosal bodies for gas analysis was impossible because of the anatomically small penis size of cats. Conservative management, including topical steroid ointment, lidocaine gel, gabapentin, and diazepam, was prescribed for supportive management. The clinical signs resolved, and ultrasonographic examination of the penis revealed no abnormalities. The cat remains clinically well without recurrence during the 6 months after treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report of non-ischemic priapism in a cat.

Activity-based monitoring of cell-secreted proteases has gained significant interest due to the implication of these substances in diverse cellular functions. Here, we demonstrated a cell-based method of monitoring protease activity using fluorescent cell-permeable peptides. The activatable peptide consists of anionic (EEEE), cleavable, and cationic sequences (RRRR) that enable intracellular delivery by matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2), which is secreted by living cancer cells. Compared to HT-29 cells (MMP2-negative), HT-1080 cells (MMP2-positive) showed a strong fluorescence response to the short fluorescent peptide via cell-secreted protease activation. Our approach is expected to find applications for the rapid visualization of protease activity in living cells.

We studied the evolutionary relationship of two widely distributed parapatric butterfly species, Melitaea athalia and Melitaea celadussa, using the ddRAD sequencing approach, as well as genital morphology and mtDNA data. M. athalia was retrieved as paraphyletic with respect to M. celadussa. Several cases of mito-nuclear discordance and morpho-genetic mismatch were found in the contact zone. A strongly diverged and marginally sympatric clade of M. athalia from the Balkans was revealed. An in-depth analysis of genomic structure detected high levels of admixture between M. athalia and M. celadussa at the contact zone, though not reaching the Balkan clade. The demo-graphic modelling of populations supported the intermediate genetic make-up of European M. atha-lia populations with regards to M. celadussa and the Balkan clade. However, the dissimilarity matrix of genotype data (PCoA) suggested the Balkan lineage having a genetic component that is unrelated to the athalia-celadussa group. Although narrowly sympatric, almost no signs of gene flow were found between the main M. athalia group and the Balkan clade. We propose two possible scenarios on the historical evolution of our model taxa and the role of the last glacial maximum in shaping their current distribution.
