Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) has been associated with early coronary artery disease (CAD) and increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. However, the prevalence of FH and its long-term outcomes in a CAD-high-risk cohort, defined as patients with hypercholesteremia who underwent coronary angiography, remains unknown. Besides, studies regarding the impact of genetic variations in FH on long-term cardiovascular (CV) outcomes are scarce. Methods and Results: In total, 285 patients hospitalized for coronary angiography with blood low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels ≥ 160 mg/dL were sequenced to detect FH genetic variations in LDL receptors apolipoprotein B and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9. Risk factors associated with long-term CV outcomes were evaluated. The prevalence of FH was high (14.4%). CAD and early CAD were significantly more prevalent among FH variation carriers than non-carriers, despite comparable blood LDL-C levels. Moreover, the FH variation carriers also underwent more revascularization after a mean follow-up of 6.1 years. Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that FH genetic variation was associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality (odds ratio = 3.17, p = 0.047). Two common FH variants, LDLR c.986G>A and LDLR c.268G>A, showed the most significant impacts on high blood LDL-C levels and early-onset CAD. Conclusions: Our results indicate that FH genetic variants may exhibit differential effects on early-onset CAD and revascularization risks in patients undergoing coronary angiography. FH genetic information might help identify high-risk patients with typical CAD symptoms for appropriate intervention.

The ascending and descending InSAR deformations derived from ALOS-2 and Sentinel-1 satellite SAR images and GPS displacements are used to estimate the fault model of the 2018 Mw 6.4 Hualien earthquake. The sinistral strike-slip fault dipping to the west with a high dip angle of 89.4° and a rake angle of 201.7° is considered as the seismogenic fault of this event. This seismogenic fault also triggered the ruptures of the Milun fault, which dips to the east with a dip angle of ~72°, and an unknown west-dipping fault with a dip angle of 85.2°. Two predicted faulting models indicate that the InSAR deformation fields include more postseismic slip than those of the GPS data. The north segment of the Milun fault and west-dipping fault have been triggered by the rupture of the seismogenic fault, but the postseismic slip occurred only in the south segment of the Milun fault. The InSAR-derived co-seismic and postseismic faulting model suggests that the significant slip concentrates at depths of 2.4–15.0 km of the main fault, 0.0–14.0 km of the Milun fault. Only minor slip is detected on the west-dipping fault. The maximum fault slip of ca. 2.1 m is located at the depth of ca. 2.4 km under the Meilun Tableland. The Coulomb failure stress (CFS) change calculated by the co-seismic and postseismic faulting model shows that there is a significant CFS increase in the east of the south segment of the Milun fault, but few of the aftershocks occur in this area, which indicates a high risk of future seismic hazard.

Identifying protected areas most susceptible to climate change and deforestation represents critical information for determining conservation investments. Development of effective landscape interventions is required to ensure the preservation and protection of these areas essential to ecosystem service provision, provide high biodiversity value, and serve a critical habitat connectivity role. We identified vulnerable protected areas in the humid tropical forest biome using climate metrics for 2050 and future deforestation risk for 2024 modeled from historical deforestation and global drivers of deforestation. Results show distinct continental and regional patterns of combined threats to protected areas. Eleven Mha (2%) of global humid tropical protected area was exposed to the highest combined threats and should be prioritized for investments in landscape interventions focused on adaptation to climate stressors. Global tropical protected area exposed to the lowest deforestation risk but highest climate risks totaled 135 Mha (26%). Thirty-five percent of South America’s protected area fell into this risk category and should be prioritized for increasing protected area size and connectivity to facilitate species movement. Global humid tropical protected area exposed to a combination of the lowest deforestation and lowest climate risks totaled 89 Mha (17%), and were disproportionately located in Africa (34%) and Asia (17%), indicating opportunities for low-risk conservation investments for improved connectivity to these potential climate refugia. This type of biome-scale, protected area analysis, combining both climate change and deforestation threats, is critical to informing policies and landscape interventions to maximize investments for environmental conservation and increase ecosystem resilience to climate change.
