Oxidative stress, COX-2, LDHA and hyperglycemia are interlinked contributing pathways in the etiology, progression and metastasis of colon cancer. Additionally, dysregulated apoptosis in cells with genetic alternations leads to their progression in malignant transformation. Therefore, quinazolinones 3a–3h and 5a–5h were synthesized and evaluated as antioxidants, enzymes inhibitors and cytotoxic agents against LoVo and HCT-116 cells. Moreover, the most active cytotoxic derivatives were evaluated as apoptosis inducers. The results indicated that 3a, 3g and 5a were efficiently scavenged DPPH radicals with lowered IC50 values (mM) ranging from 0.165 ± 0.0057 to 0.191 ± 0.0099, as compared to 0.245 ± 0.0257 by BHT. Derivatives 3h, 5a and 5h were recognized as more potent dual inhibitors than quercetin against α-amylase and α-glucosidase, in addition to 3a, 3c, 3f and 5b–5f against α-amylase. Although none of the compounds demonstrated a higher efficiency than the reference inhibitors against COX-2 and LDHA, 3a and 3g were identified as the most active derivatives. Molecular docking studies were used to elucidate the binding affinities and binding interactions between the inhibitors and their target proteins. Compounds 3a and 3f showed cytotoxic activities, with IC50 values (µM) of 294.32 ± 8.41 and 383.5 ± 8.99 (LoVo), as well as 298.05 ± 13.26 and 323.59 ± 3.00 (HCT-116). The cytotoxicity mechanism of 3a and 3f could be attributed to the modulation of apoptosis regulators (Bax and Bcl-2), the activation of intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathways via the upregulation of initiator caspases-8 and -9 as well as executioner caspase-3, and the arrest of LoVo and HCT-116 cell cycles in the G2/M and G1 phases, respectively. Lastly, the physicochemical, medicinal chemistry and ADMET properties of all compounds were predicted.

This in vitro study focused on the antimicrobial activity of methanolic and aqueous extracts of three organs (stems, roots, and leaves) of Pistacia lentiscus against nine bacterial species, two fungal, and one yeast strain. A comparative study of the yield, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) composition, and polyphenol content of the different extracts was conducted. The obtained data showed that the yield of the methanolic extracts (between 13% and 33.3%) was greater than that of the aqueous extracts (between 10% and 18%). The highest yield recorded was in the presence of the methanolic leaf extract, followed by the stem and root extracts. Methanolic extracts are richer in polyphenols than aqueous extracts. Indeed, the highest content was observed in the leaf methanolic extract (28.4 mg GAE/g), followed by the stem (2.96 mg GAE/g), and then the root (2.62 mg GAE/g). HPLC revealed variability in the chemical compositions of the different methanolic extracts. The leaf extract was richer in phenolic acids and flavonoids than the stem and root extracts. Regarding antimicrobial activity, it was concluded that the different methanolic extracts of lentisk were more active than the aqueous extracts. In addition, the different methanolic extracts exhibited antimicrobial activity against all tested strains, despite their morphology and Gram-staining. Indeed, the maximum inhibition zones and the minimum inhibitory concentrations for the bacterial strains sensitive to the different methanolic extracts of the mastic tree were in the range of 7 to 11 mm and 12.5 to 25 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, these extracts showed greater inhibitory activity against the tested fungal strains (A. niger and A. flavus) and yeast (C. albicans) than against the bacterial strains. These extracts can be used to treat antimicrobial infections and as food preservatives.

Background and Objectives: Obesity is a chronic inflammatory condition and is considered a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The effects of obesity management via sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and lifestyle intervention (LS) on inflammatory cytokines, redox status, and CVD risk were studied in this work. Materials and Methods: A total of 92 participants (18 to 60 years old) with obesity (BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 were divided into two groups: the bariatric surgery (BS) group (n = 30), and the LS group (n = 62). According to the achievement of 7% weight loss after 6 months, the participants were allocated to either the BS group, the weight loss (WL) group, or the weight resistance (WR) group. Assessments were performed for body composition (by bioelectric impedance), inflammatory markers (by ELISA kits), oxidative stress (OS), antioxidants (by spectrophotometry), and CVD risk (by the Framingham risk score (FRS) and lifetime atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk (ASCVD)). Measurements were taken before and after six months of either SG or LS (500 kcal deficit balanced diet, physical activity, and behavioral modification). Results: At the final assessment, only 18 participants in the BS group, 14 participants in the WL group, and 24 participants in the WR group remained. The loss in fat mass (FM) and weight loss were greatest in the BS group (p < 0.0001). Levels of IL-6, TNF-a, MCP-1, CRP, and OS indicators were significantly reduced in the BS and WL groups. The WR group had significant change only in MCP-1 and CRP. Significant reductions in the CVD risk in the WL and BS groups were detected only when using FRS rather than ASCVD. The FM loss correlated inversely with FRS-BMI and ASCVD in the BS group, whereas in the WL group, FM loss correlated only with ASCVD. Conclusions: BS produced superior weight and fat mass loss. However, both BS and LS produced a similar reduction in the inflammatory cytokines, relief of OS indicators, and enhancement of antioxidant capacity, and consequently reduced the CVD risk.

In this study, we will present an efficient and selective adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The silica-based adsorbent is functionalized by 2-phenylimidazo[1,2-a] pyridine-3-carbaldehyde (SiN-imd-py) and the characterization was carried out by applying various techniques including FT-IR, SEM, TGA and elemental analysis. The SiN-imd-py adsorbent shows a good selectivity and high adsorption capacity towards Cu(II) and reached 100 mg/g at pH = 6 and T = 25 °C. This adsorption capacity is important compared to other similar adsorbents which are currently published. The adsorption mechanism, thermodynamics, reusability and the effect of different experimental conditions, such as contact time, pH and temperature, on the adsorption process, were also investigated. In addition, a theoretical study was carried out to understand the adsorption mechanism and the active sites of the adsorbent, as well as the stability of the complex formed and the nature of the bonds.

The current work involves the synthesis of 2,2′-(6-(piperidin-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)bis(hydrazin-2-yl-1-ylidene))bis(methanylylidene))diphenol 4, characterization, and the DFT studies of the reported compound. The crystal unit cell parameters of 4 are a = 8.1139(2) Å, b = 11.2637(2) Å, c = 45.7836(8) Å. The unit cell volume is 4184.28(15) Å3 and Z = 4. It crystallized in the orthorhombic crystal system and Pbca space group. The O…H, N…H, C…H, H…H and C…C intermolecular contacts which affect the crystal stability were quantitatively analyzed using Hirshfeld calculations. Their percentages were calculated to be 9.8, 15.8, 23.7, 46.4, and 1.6% from the whole contacts occurred in the crystal, respectively. Conformational analysis was performed using DFT calculations for 17 suggested conformers and the most stable conformer was found to be the one which is stabilized by two intramolecular O-H…N hydrogen bonding interactions. This conclusion was further revealed by natural bond orbital calculations.

Background and Objectives: Elderly patients constitute a large segment of healthcare receivers. Considering the functional deterioration of multiple organ systems with aging, achieving a safe perioperative approach is challenging. Our aim is to study the safety and effectiveness of a genuinely regimented co-induction technique in order to minimize anesthesia-related complications. Materials and Methods: One hundred and five patients were assigned to three groups according to the induction technique: propofol, sevoflurane and co-induction group. Inclusion criteria: patients with age ≥65 and American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification (ASA) II-III who underwent endoscopic urological procedures. The propofol group received a dose of 1.5 mg kg−1 of propofol over two minutes for induction. The sevoflurane group received 8% of sevoflurane and 100% oxygen through a plastic facemask with the fresh gas flow set at 8 L min−1. The co-induction group received 4% sevoflurane through plastic facemask for two minutes, followed by a 0.75 mg kg−1 dose of propofol. After ensuring full range jaw relaxation, the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) was inserted. Results: Overall, the co-induction technique had a favorable profile in terms of respiratory adverse events, while the sevoflurane group had a favorable profile in terms of hemodynamic stability. Furthermore, 24 (68.6%) patients receiving inhalational sevoflurane had episodes of transient apnea, which constitutes 77.4% of the 31 episodes of transient apnea in the studied sample (p < 0.001). Moreover, six (17.1%) patients in the sevoflurane group had an episode of partial laryngospasm (p = 0.034). Compared with the co-induction group, we found that the propofol group had significantly less systolic and diastolic blood pressures in the second minute, with p values of (0.018) and (0.015), respectively. Conclusions: The co-induction technique utilizing 4% sevoflurane at 8 L min−1 flow of oxygen inhaled over two minutes followed by 0.75 mg kg−1 of propofol achieved less respiratory adverse events compared with the sevoflurane group, and less hemodynamic instability compared with the propofol group.

We describe here a new measure of religious commitment, the Belief into Action (BIAC) scale. This measure was designed to be a comprehensive and sensitive measure of religious involvement that could discriminate individuals across the religious spectrum, and avoid the problem of ceiling effects that have haunted the study of highly-religious populations. Many scales assess religious beliefs, where assent to belief is often widespread, subjective, and a superficial assessment of religious commitment. While people may say they believe, what does that mean in terms of action? This 10-item scale seeks to convert simple belief into action, where action is assessed in terms of what individuals say is most important in their lives, how they spend their time, and where they put their financial resources. We summarize here the psychometric characteristics of the BIAC in two very different populations: stressed female caregivers in Southern California and North Carolina, and college students attending three universities in Mainland China. We conclude that the BIAC is a sensitive, reliable, and valid measure of religious commitment in these two samples, and encourage research in other population groups using this scale to determine its psychometric properties more generally.

The contamination of water surfaces by mercury is a dangerous environmental problem due to its toxicity, which leads kidney damage. Activated carbon from mixed recyclable waste modified by phosphonium-based ionic liquid (IL-ACMRW) was therefore prepared and evaluated for Hg(II) remediation. The activated carbon used in this study was prepared from mixed waste, including cardboard, papers and palm wastes as cheap raw materials. The mixed Recyclable Waste Activated Carbon was combined with trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium Bis2,4,4-(trimethylpentyl)phosphinate (Cyphos® IL 104) ionic liquid to form an adsorbent with organic-inorganic content, in order to improve the Hg(II) uptake from aqueous solutions. FTIR confirms the presence of P, C=O and OH after this modification. The adsorption process was investigated and the evaluated results showed that the capacity was 124 mg/g at pH 4, with a contact time of 90 min, an adsorbent dose of 0.4 g/L, and a Hg(II) concentration of 50 mg/L. This Hg(II) adsorption capacity is superior than that reported in the literature for modified multiwall carbon nanotubes. The adsorption of Hg(II) on the modified activated carbon from mixed recyclable waste was found to follow the pseudo second-order kinetics model. Isotherms of adsorption were analyzed via Freundlich and Langmuir models. The results indicated that Freundlich is the best model to describe the process, suggesting multilayer adsorption.

Nowadays, the rapidly increasing energy consumption of communication equipment is an economic and environmental problem that needs to be addressed. Small Local Area Networks (LAN) switches in the US alone consume about 8 TWh per year that corresponds to hundreds of millions of US dollars in electricity. A main reason is communication equipment, due to the fact that, Ethernet switches have to active all days even in low-traffic time. There are many approaches to make the switches sensitive with the different traffic load environment, but they have to put some changes to current Ethernet that cause the incompatibility issues. This paper proposes a new device called Modified Multiplexer (MUXER), which can control the power functions of switches without modifying the current Ethernet protocol. The MUXER devices are put before the switches in the network, which provide some functions to transfer incoming Media Access Control (MAC) data frames to the corresponding switches managed by MUXERs. By using the proposed device, the wasted energies in the network can be reduced, especially in the specified low-traffic time. We describe the result of numerical analysis and compare detail power consumption data between a normal and a network where MUXERs are installed. In this work, the explained result shows that if a network administrator can estimate the number of MUXER needed for a particular network and install accordingly, our device can provides a significant energy saving.
