In this study, "Honghu White Lotus", "Red Lotus (HH)", "Hunan Cunshan Lotus (CS)", "Wuyi Xuanlian", "Space Lotus 36", "Fujian Jianning White Lotus (JB)", "Jiangsu Yangzhou Lotus (JY)", and "Suzhou Dongshan Lotus" were selected as experimental subjects. The lotus seed flesh and lotus plumule of each cultivar were selected for nutritional quality and functional active substance analyses. Comparing different cultivars of lotus seeds, the protein and crude fat contents of JY flesh were the highest at 65.59 mg/g and 13%, respectively. The VC content of JB flesh and lotus plumule is the highest at 41.56 mg/g and 204.29 mg/g, respectively. JB flesh has the lowest soluble sugar content, at 17.87 mg/g, while HB's lotus plumule and flesh have the highest content, at 33.67 mg/g and 29.62 mg/g, respectively. There was no significant difference in the crude fat content of the flesh and lotus plumule among the eight cultivars. TK flesh and lotus plumule have the highest amylose content, at 23.67 mg/g and 76.81 mg/g, respectively. Among them, the total starch content of JB (476.17 mg/g) was relatively high, whereas its amylose content was only 26.09 mg/g. Lower amylose content makes it less prone to aging. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the JY lotus plumule were the highest, at 18.64 and 21.04 mg/g, respectively. The alkaloid content of CS, HH, and JY was relatively high at 20.01, 19.29, and 18.68 mg/g, respectively. This study investigated the impact of variety and harvest time on the visual appearance, nutritional quality, and functional active substances of six lotus root cultivars: "Xinsanwu", "Wuzhi No. 2", "Baiyuzhan", "Huaqilian", "Elian No. 6", and "Elian No. 5". Samples were collected monthly from December 2023 to April 2024. A nutrient analysis revealed a decrease in the water content with a delayed harvest. The total soluble solids and soluble sugar content peaked towards the end and middle-to-late harvest periods, respectively. Starch levels initially increased before declining, while the soluble protein exhibited a triphasic trend with an initial rise, a dip, and a final increase. The vitamin C (Vc) content varied across cultivars. Functional active substances displayed dynamic changes. The total phenolics initially decreased, then increased, before ultimately declining again. The total flavonoid content varied by both cultivar and harvest time. The phenolic acid and flavonoid content mirrored the trends observed for total phenolics and total flavonoids. Gastrodin was the most abundant non-flavonoid compound across all varieties. "Wuzhi No. 2" and "Baiyuzhan" displayed higher levels of functional active substances and starch, while the Elian series and "Xinsanwu" cultivar exhibited a greater content of Vc, soluble sugar, and soluble protein. Specific harvest periods yielded optimal results: "Wuzhi No. 2" (H1 and H5), "Huaqilian" (H2), and "Baiyuzhan" (H3 and H4) demonstrated a high nutrient and functional active substance content. Overall, the lotus roots harvested in period H4 achieved the highest score. Overall, this study provides the foothold for the rapid identification of superior lotus root cultivars and the valorization of lotus root by-products via advanced processing methods. The increasing prominence of climate change, geopolitical crises, and global economic slowdown highlights the challenges and structural deficiencies of traditional cross-border agro-food supply chains. As a result, there has been a growing consensus on the need to leverage digital technology to rebuild and innovate a safe, stable, and sustainable global food system. This study assessed the knowledge progress and development trends in the sustainable development of cross-border agro-food supply chains enabled by digital technology. A total of 352 authoritative papers from the core Web of Science database were selected for analysis. The Citespace tool was utilized to visually examine research elements. The findings reveal that research outcomes in this territory experienced a significant period of rapid growth, particularly after 2020. Sustainability and IEEE Access are the journals with the highest and second-highest number of publications. China and the France National Institute are the countries and research institutions with the largest number of publications in this field. The research hotspots are mainly the application of digital technologies, food safety, and supply chain system model innovation. In the past ten years, the research in this territory has gone through three stages: precise timeliness orientation, intelligent strategic decision-making orientation, and model predictability orientation. We further construct the 'antecedent–practice–performance' conceptual framework of the sustainability of the digital technology-enabled cross-border agro-food supply chain. Finally, this paper presents the potential research directions in this territory, focusing on four aspects: research method, research mechanism, research topic, and research frontier. Siniperca chuatsi rhabdovirus (SCRV) is a major strain of viral fish virus resulting in multiple transmissions and devastating damage in aquaculture. Currently, there are no available approved therapeutics. In this study, we screened and identified a novel curcumin analog (EF-24) for evaluating its in vitro anti-SCRV properties and potential molecular mechanisms. Present results demonstrated that EF-24 could strongly delay the occurrence of cytopathic effects (CPEs) in epithelioma papulosum cyprinid cells (EPCs) and inhibit SCRV replication and viral nucleoprotein expression in the early stages of infection by the time-of-addition assay. Furthermore, flow cytometry analysis after Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining and immunofluorescence microscopy observation after JC-1 incubation showed that EF-24 downregulated cell mitochondrial apoptosis induced by SCRV. The enzymatic activities of caspase-3 and caspase-9 were also reduced after EF-24 treatment, indicating that EF-24 may protect cells from SCRV infection by decreasing mitochondrial intrinsic apoptosis in infected cells. Collectively, we demonstrated for the first time that the curcumin analog EF-24 possesses antiviral ability against SCRV, suggesting its potential for effective control of fish rhabdovirus spreading. Accurately predicting the active power output of offshore wind power is of great significance for reducing the uncertainty in new power systems. By utilizing the spatiotemporal correlation characteristics among wind turbine unit outputs, this paper embeds the Diffusion Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) into the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) for the feature extraction of spatiotemporal correlations in wind turbine unit outputs. It also combines graph structure learning to propose a sequence-to-sequence model for ultra-short-term power prediction in large offshore wind farms. Firstly, the electrical connection graph within the wind farm is used to preliminarily determine the reference adjacency matrix for the wind turbine units within the farm, injecting prior knowledge of the adjacency matrix into the model. Secondly, a convolutional neural network is utilized to convolve the historical curves of units within the farm along the time dimension, outputting a unit connection probability vector. The Gumbel–softmax reparameterization method is then used to make the probability vector differentiable, thereby generating an optimal adjacency matrix for the prediction task based on the probability vector. At the same time, the difference between the two adjacency matrices is added as a regularization term to the loss function to reduce model overfitting. Temporal action localization (TAL) is crucial in video analysis, yet presents notable challenges. This process focuses on the precise identification and categorization of action instances within lengthy, raw videos. A key difficulty in TAL lies in determining the exact start and end points of actions, owing to the often unclear boundaries of these actions in real-world footage. Existing methods tend to take insufficient account of changes in action boundary features. To tackle these issues, we propose a boundary awareness network (BAN) for TAL. Specifically, the BAN mainly consists of a feature encoding network, coarse pyramidal detection to obtain preliminary proposals and action categories, and fine-grained detection with a Gaussian boundary module (GBM) to get more valuable boundary information. The GBM contains a novel Gaussian boundary pooling, which serves to aggregate the relevant features of the action boundaries and to capture discriminative boundary and actionness features. Furthermore, we introduce a novel approach named Boundary Differentiated Learning (BDL) to ensure our model's capability in accurately identifying action boundaries across diverse proposals. Comprehensive experiments on both the THUMOS14 and ActivityNet v1.3 datasets, where our BAN model achieved an increase in mean Average Precision (mAP) by 1.6% and 0.2%, respectively, over existing state-of-the-art methods, illustrate that our approach not only improves upon the current state of the art but also achieves outstanding performance. To enhance the bioavailability and antihypertensive effect of the anti-depressant drug citalopram hydrobromide (CTH) we developed a sustained-release transdermal delivery system containing CTH. A transdermal diffusion meter was first used to determine the optimal formulation of the CTH transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS). Then, based on the determined formulation, a sustained-release patch was prepared; its physical characteristics, including quality, stickiness, and appearance, were evaluated, and its pharmacokinetics and irritation to the skin were evaluated by applying it to rabbits and rats. The optimal formulation of the CTH TDDS was 49.2% hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose K100M, 32.8% polyvinylpyrrolidone K30, 16% oleic acid-azone, and 2% polyacrylic acid resin II. The system continuously released an effective dose of CTH for 24 h and significantly enhanced its bioavailability, with a higher area under the curve, good stability, and no skin irritation. The developed CTH TDDS possessed a sustained-release effect and good characteristics and pharmacokinetics; therefore, it has the potential for clinical application as an antidepressant. Synaptic plasticity enhances or reduces connections between neurons, affecting learning and memory. Postsynaptic AMPARs mediate greater than 90% of the rapid excitatory synaptic transmission in glutamatergic neurons. The number and subunit composition of AMPARs are fundamental to synaptic plasticity and the formation of entire neural networks. Accordingly, the insertion and functionalization of AMPARs at the postsynaptic membrane have become a core issue related to neural circuit formation and information processing in the central nervous system. In this review, we summarize current knowledge regarding the related mechanisms of AMPAR expression and trafficking. The proteins related to AMPAR trafficking are discussed in detail, including vesicle-related proteins, cytoskeletal proteins, synaptic proteins, and protein kinases. Furthermore, significant emphasis was placed on the pivotal role of the actin cytoskeleton, which spans throughout the entire transport process in AMPAR transport, indicating that the actin cytoskeleton may serve as a fundamental basis for AMPAR trafficking. Additionally, we summarize the proteases involved in AMPAR post-translational modifications. Moreover, we provide an overview of AMPAR transport and localization to the postsynaptic membrane. Understanding the assembly, trafficking, and dynamic synaptic expression mechanisms of AMPAR may provide valuable insights into the cognitive decline associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The effect of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) seed extracts (FSEs) on the structure of duck myofibrillar protein (MP) oxidation was researched via particle size, zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), fluorescence spectroscopy, SDS-PAGE, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the Fenton oxidation system. FSE (0.3 mg/mL) could scavenge 58.79% of the hydroxyl radical and possessed good antioxidation. FSE could retard the oxidation of MP, and the carbonyl formation and total sulfhydryl loss of MP decreased by 42.00% and 105.94%, respectively, after 4.67% of FSE treatment. SDS-PAGE results showed that 0.67% and 2.67% of FSE decreased the strength of the myosin heavy chain (MHC) and actin bands of the oxidized MP, respectively. The FSE changed the secondary structures of the MP and promoted the unfolding of the MP structure and the transformation from α-helix to β-turn. When treated with 0.67% of FSE, the hydrophobicity of the MP declined by 26.14%, and solubility was improved by 37.21% compared with the oxidation group. After 0.67% of FSE treatment, the particle size and zeta potential of the MP returned to the level of the blank group. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that FSE improved the apparent morphology of the MP. Overall, FSE had positive effects on the antioxidation of the duck MP, and it could improve the structure and characteristics of the MP. Orthodontic treatment was accompanied by the remodeling of cancellous bone in alveolar bone (CBAB), which manifested as the increase or decrease in bone mineral density (BMD). BMD is closely related to the mechanical properties of the alveolar bone. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify the effect of BMD on its viscoelastic behavior and to assess orthodontic forces at different BMDs. A total of nine CBAB samples were cut from the cervical, middle, and apical regions of the right mandible between canine, premolars, and molars. After scanning with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The BMD of samples was measured and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was performed. Based on the fourth-order generalized Maxwell model, a viscoelastic constitutive model characterizing the BMD variation was constructed. The BMD exhibited variations within different regions of the CBAB. The storage modulus is positively correlated with BMD, and the loss modulus is negatively correlated with BMD. Long-term humoral immunity is mediated by short-lived plasma cells (replenished by memory B cells) and long-lived plasma cells. Their relative contributions are uncertain for immunity to SARS-CoV-2, especially given the widespread use of novel mRNA vaccines. Yet, this has far-reaching implications in terms of the need for regular booster doses in the general population and perhaps even revaccination in patients receiving B cell-depleting therapy. We aimed to characterise anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody titres in patients receiving Rituximab following previous SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We recruited 10 fully vaccinated patients (age: 16.9 ± 2.52 years) with childhood-onset nephrotic syndrome, not in relapse, receiving Rituximab for their steroid/calcineurin-inhibitor sparing effect. Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) proteins were measured immediately prior to Rituximab and again ~6 months later, using the Roche Elecys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 (S) assay. All ten patients were positive for anti-S antibodies prior to Rituximab, with six patients (60%) having titres above the upper limit of detection (>12,500 U/mL). Following Rituximab therapy, there was a reduction in anti-S titres (p = 0.043), but all patients remained positive for anti-S antibodies, with five patients (50%) continuing to have titres >12,500 U/mL. Six patients (60%) were positive for anti-N antibodies prior to Rituximab. Following Rituximab therapy, only three of these six patients remained positive for anti-N antibodies (p = 0.036 compared to anti-S seroreversion). Wave energy has emerged as a focal point in marine renewable energy research. Accurate prediction of wave power plays a pivotal role in enhancing power supply reliability. This paper introduces an innovative wave power prediction method that combines seasonal–trend decomposition using LOESS (STL) with a dual-channel Seq2Seq model. The decomposition model addresses the issue of component redundancy in current input decomposition methods, thereby uncovering key components. The prediction model improves upon the limitations of current prediction models that directly concatenate multiple features, allowing for a more detailed consideration of both trend and periodic features. The proposed approach begins by decomposing the power sequence based on tidal periods and optimal correlation criteria, effectively extracting both trend and periodic features. Subsequently, a dual-channel Seq2Seq model is constructed. The first channel employs temporal pattern attention to capture the trend and stochastic fluctuation information, while the second channel utilizes multi-head self-attention to further enhance the extraction of periodic components. Model validation is performed using data from two ocean buoys, each with a five-year dataset. The proposed model achieves an average 2.45% reduction in RMSE compared to the state-of-the-art method. The rapid and precise acquisition of the agricultural plastic greenhouse (PG) spatial distribution is essential in understanding PG usage and degradation, ensuring agricultural production, and protecting the ecological environment and human health. It is of great practical significance to realize the effective utilization of remote sensing images in the agricultural field and improve the extraction accuracy of PG remote sensing data. In this study, Landsat operational land imager (OLI) remote sensing images were used as data sources, and Shandong Province, which has the largest PG distribution in China, was selected as the study area. PGs in the study area were identified by means of contour recognition, feature set construction of the spatial structure, and machine learning. The results were as follows. (1) Through an optimal segmentation parameter approach, it was determined that the optimal segmentation scale for size, shape, and compactness should be set at 20, 0.8, and 0.5, respectively, which significantly improved PG contour recognition. (2) Among the 72 feature variables for PG spatial recognition, the number of features and classification accuracy showed a trend of first gradually increasing and then decreasing. Among them, fifteen feature variables, including the mean of bands 2 and 5; six index features (NDWI, GNDVI, SWIR1_NIR, NDVI, and PMLI); two shape features, the density and shape index; and two texture features, the contrast and standard deviation, played an important role. (3) According to the recall rate, accuracy rate, and F-value of three machine learning methods, random forest (RDF), CART decision tree (CART), and support vector machine (SVM), SVM had the best classification effect. The classification method described in this paper can accurately extract continuous plastic greenhouses through remote sensing images and provide a reference for the application of facility agriculture and non-point-source pollution control. Based on the lightweight characteristics of automotive energy absorption boxes and the requirement of good energy absorption effect, this article first applies the node-enhanced body centered cubic (NBCC) lattice structure to the inner core design of automotive energy absorption boxes. The gradient study of the NBCC lattice structure was carried out using a drop hammer impact and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results indicate that gradient lattice structures have advantages in energy absorption, but there are differences under different gradient strategies. When the impact is not sufficient to compact the structure, the vertical rod diameter gradient node-enhanced lattice structure (RGNBCC) can absorb more energy and improve energy absorption performance by 25%. The vertical height gradient node-enhanced lattice structure (HGNBCC) is more suitable for high-speed impact conditions. Based on the advantages of the RGNBCC in resisting low-speed impacts, it is applied to the inner core design of automotive energy absorption boxes and optimized using multi-objective optimization methods. This paper addresses the challenges of ground-based observation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) targets using on-Earth telescopes and proposes solutions for improving image quality and tracking fast-moving objects under atmospheric turbulence conditions. The study investigates major challenges, including atmospheric turbulence-induced aberrations, blurring, telescope platform vibrations, and spatial variations caused by the target motion. A scenario simulation is conducted considering practical limitations, such as feasible time slots for monitoring and the number of available frames within the Field of View (FoV). The paper proposes a novel method for detecting LEO targets using Harris corner features and matching adjacent images upon the corrected frames by Adaptive Optics (AO), with a 38 % reduction in the Mean Squared Error (MSE) achieved for certain frames within the isoplanatic angle. Additionally, a refinement strategy for deblurring images is proposed, combining the post-processing with Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) filtering; with a proper filtering factor ( β = 0.1 ), an almost complete collection of 14 corner nodes can be detected. The feasibility of continuously tracking objects with uncontrolled attitudes, such as space debris, is successfully demonstrated with continuous monitoring of certain features. Atmospheric constituents feature a large vertical gradient in concentration, especially at the first few hundred meters over the earth's surface. Atmospheric lidar usually cannot cover this range due to the incomplete overlap effect or the limited dynamic range of detectors. This drawback is well known as the blind zone effect, which hinders the application of atmospheric lidars in many aspects. In this work, a method based on an optical fiber bundle was proposed to mitigate the blind zone effect. An optical fiber head with several stages, installed at the focal plane of the telescope, is used to receive backscatter light from different range levels. The design of the optical fiber head is analyzed with the ray-tracing technique. The optical fiber installed at the highest stage of the fiber head can collect far-range light like a small aperture, and all the other optical fibers are bundled into a near-range detection channel to receive backscatter light from the first few hundred meters. This special design can avoid the near-range light loss in conventional lidar systems, usually equipped with a small aperture. Different optical attenuations are then applied to near-range and far-range channels to suppress the overall signal dynamic range. This light-receiving method was applied in a 1030 nm elastic lidar, in which a fiber bundle with a three-stage fiber head was fabricated and installed. A test experiment was performed to verify this approach. A good agreement between simulations and in-system results was found. Based on this design, the blind zone of the lidar system is less than 50 m, and the detectable range can be over 10 km along the lidar's line of sight with a single telescope receiver. This approach brings a new way of designing atmospheric lidar with a low blind zone and can strengthen our ability to monitor urban pollution and promote land-atmosphere interaction research. Periodontal ligament (PDL) is mainly composed of collagen fiber bundles, and the content of collagen fiber is an important factor affecting the mechanical properties of PDL. Based on this, the purpose of this study is to explore the effect of the PDL collagen fiber content on its viscoelastic mechanical behavior. Transverse and longitudinal samples of different regions of PDL were obtained from the human maxilla. The fiber content at different regions of human PDL was quantitatively measured using image processing software, and a new viscoelastic constitutive model was constructed based on the fiber content. The nano-indentation experiment was carried out with a loading rate of 0.5 mN·s−1, a peak load of 3 mN, and a holding time of 200 s, and the model parameters were obtained through the experiment data. The results showed that with the increase of fiber content, the deformation resistance of PDL also increased, and compared with the neck and middle region, the compressive strain in the apical region of PDL was the largest. The range of reduced elastic modulus of human PDL was calculated to be 0.39~5.08 MPa. The results of the experimental data and the viscoelastic constitutive model fit well, indicating that the model can well describe the viscoelastic behavior of human PDL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The wave-energy excitation of point absorbers is highly associated with their resonant movement, and harmonic characteristics are of increasing concern in affecting resonance. However, the commonly used linearized power take-off (PTO) systems underestimate the impact of harmonics. The purpose of this study is to address the knowledge gap in assessing the contribution of hydraulic PTO systems to higher harmonic wave loads and velocities. In the present work, higher harmonics in point-absorber wave-energy converters (PA-WECs) with hydraulic power take-off (PTO) systems are investigated through both experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. The fast Fourier transform is used to decompose the high-order harmonics. To account for the influence of nonlinear wave–wave interaction on harmonics, the isolated PA-WEC is used as a basis for comparison with the paired PA-WECs. The influence of wave steepness is also estimated at two resonance periods. Results indicate that the additional resonance of the paired PA-WECs may be attributed to the harmonic wave loads at longer wave periods. Harmonic wave loads of paired PA-WECs typically have a more substantial impact and increase more rapidly with increasing wave steepness compared to isolated PA-WECs. Furthermore, as the wave steepness increases, there are significant enhancements in both the harmonic wave loads and heaving velocity, which strongly correlate with the instantaneous maximum hydraulic power. Aerosol lidars play a vital role in the investigations of atmospheric pollution formation and meteorological processes. The intensity of lidar return signals in the near range changes much faster compared with the one in the far range, so extremely wide dynamic outputs from the photomultiplier tube (PMT) are needed to avoid saturation in the near range. Usually, to obtain the wide dynamic range, simultaneously, a transient digitizer (Licel) is applied to provide an analog detection chain for strong signals and a photon counting (PC) detection chain for weak signals. However, the near-range signals are still often saturated due to the very high aerosol loading. In this paper, we proposed to use a new PMT module with eight orders of magnitude for a low blind zone lidar, which can achieve both analog and PC separately. A comprehensive evaluation of this potential PMT, which could perform better in near-range detection, compared with the ordinary PMT was tested, but similar features are maintained in the far-range. The photon count rate and signal-to-noise ratio were tested for both the new PMT module and the ordinary PMT module. The rapid economic growth of China has caused significant adverse effects on the environment. Meanwhile, technological innovation, a fundamental driver of economic development and social progress, plays a pivotal role in mitigating haze pollution. This study comprehensively examines the influence of technological innovation on haze pollution in the Yangtze River urban agglomeration, using the STIRPAT model and analyzing research data from 2004 to 2020. Additionally, the study investigates the specific moderating role of urban spatial structure in the relationship between technological innovation and haze pollution. The findings reveal that technological innovation in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River urban agglomeration can effectively curtail haze pollution, and its impact extends to surrounding areas through spillover effect. The polycentric urban spatial structure significantly enhances the haze-reducing effect of technological innovation in the region. Notably, in cities with a strong level of environmental regulation, the urban spatial structure plays a substantial role in augmenting the haze-reducing impact of technological innovation. The policy implications of this research underscore the importance of continuous improvement in technological innovation within the middle reaches of the Yangtze River urban agglomeration. A simple and cost-effective method for the fabrication of a safe, dual-responsive, highly stretchable, self-healing and injectable hydrogel is reported based on a combination of dynamic boronate ester bonds and hydrogen bonding interactions. The mechanical properties of the hydrogel are tunable by adjusting the molar ratios between sugar moieties on the polymer and borax. It was remarkable to note that the 2:1 ratio of sugar and borate ion significantly improves the mechanical strength of the hydrogel. The injectability, self-healing and stretchability properties of the hydrogel were also examined. In addition, the impact of the variation of the pH and the addition of free sugar responsiveness of the hydrogel was studied. High MRC-5 cell viability was noticed by the 3D live/dead assay after 24 h cell culture within the hydrogel scaffold. The efficiency of the rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) falls short when efficiently guiding targets through constricted-passage environments, presenting issues such as sluggish convergence speed and elevated path costs. To overcome these algorithmic limitations, we propose a narrow-channel path-finding algorithm (named NCB-RRT) based on Bi-RRT with the addition of our proposed research failure rate threshold (RFRT) concept. Firstly, a three-stage search strategy is employed to generate sampling points guided by real-time sampling failure rates. By means of the balance strategy, two randomly growing trees are established to perform searching, which improves the success rate of the algorithm in narrow channel environments, accelerating the convergence speed and reducing the number of iterations required. Secondly, the parent node re-selection and path pruning strategy are integrated. This shortens the path length and greatly reduces the number of redundant nodes and inflection points. Finally, the path is optimized by utilizing segmented quadratic Bezier curves to achieve a smooth trajectory. This research shows that the NCB-RRT algorithm is better able to adapt to the complex narrow channel environment, and the performance is also greatly improved in terms of the path length and the number of inflection points. Kidney–ureter–bladder (KUB) imaging is used as a frontline investigation for patients with suspected renal stones. In this study, we designed a computer-aided diagnostic system for KUB imaging to assist clinicians in accurately diagnosing urinary tract stones. The image dataset used for training and testing the model comprised 485 images provided by Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The proposed system was divided into two subsystems, 1 and 2. Subsystem 1 used Inception-ResNetV2 to train a deep learning model on preprocessed KUB images to verify the improvement in diagnostic accuracy with image preprocessing. Subsystem 2 trained an image segmentation model using the ResNet hybrid, U-net, to accurately identify the contours of renal stones. The performance was evaluated using a confusion matrix for the classification model. We conclude that the model can assist clinicians in accurately diagnosing renal stones via KUB imaging. Therefore, the proposed system can assist doctors in diagnosis, reduce patients' waiting time for CT scans, and minimize the radiation dose absorbed by the body. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, a microwave resonator sensor with a unique configuration consisting of three resonators and two feedlines is proposed. This novel design aims to improve the performance and functionality of microwave resonator sensors for various applications. The frequency response of the sensor to materials with different dielectric constants is simulated. The results show that the most sensitive region of the sensor is located on the first interdigital structure, and placing the materials in other regions would enhance the linear correlation of its frequency response. The sensor also exhibits the ability to distinguish whether the same material has defects and the ability to qualitatively detect subtle changes in dielectric constant. Finally, the proposed sensor is fabricated and measured under the condition consistent with the simulation environment. The measured results are basically consistent with the simulation results, which confirms the potential of this sensor in detecting dielectric constants and resolving materials with defects, and the response of the sensor to the materials under test demonstrates its potential in measuring different thicknesses and loss tangents. This study worked to investigate the effect of household polluting fuel use (HPFU), as an indicator of household air pollution exposure, on frailty among older adults in rural China. Additionally, this study aimed to examine the moderating effect of healthy lifestyle behaviors on the aforementioned association. This study employed cross-sectional data from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which conducted nationally representative sampling of older adults from 23 provinces in mainland China. The frailty index was calculated using 38 baseline variables that assessed health deficits through questionnaire surveys and health examinations. A total of 4535 older adults aged 65 years and above were included in our study, among whom, 1780 reported using polluting fuels as their primary household cooking fuel. The results of regression analyses and multiple robustness checks indicated a significant increase in the frailty index due to HPFU. This environmental health threat was more profound among women, illiterate individuals, and low-economic-status groups. Moreover, healthy dietary and social activities had significant moderating effects on the association between HPFU and frailty. HPFU can be regarded as a risk factor for frailty among older adults in rural China, with its effects exhibiting socio-economic disparities. The adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors can alleviate the frailty associated with HPFU. In recent years, deep learning technology for clinical diagnosis has progressed considerably, and the value of medical imaging continues to increase. In the past, clinicians evaluated medical images according to their individual expertise. In contrast, the application of artificial intelligence technology for automatic analysis and diagnostic assistance to support clinicians in evaluating medical information more efficiently has become an important trend. In this study, we propose a machine learning architecture designed to segment images of retinal blood vessels based on an improved U-Net neural network model. The proposed model incorporates a residual module to extract features more effectively, and includes a full-scale skip connection to combine low level details with high-level features at different scales. The results of an experimental evaluation show that the model was able to segment images of retinal vessels accurately. Numerous pathogenic CALR exon 9 mutations have been identified in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), with type 1 (52bp deletion; CALRDEL) and type 2 (5bp insertion; CALRINS) being the most prevalent. Despite the universal pathobiology of MPN driven by various CALR mutants, it is unclear why different CALR mutations result in diverse clinical phenotypes. Through RNA sequencing followed by validation at the protein and mRNA levels, we found that S100A8 was specifically enriched in CALRDEL but not in CALRINS MPN-model cells. The expression of S100a8 could be regulated by STAT3 based on luciferase reporter assay complemented with inhibitor treatment. Pyrosequencing demonstrated relative hypomethylation in two CpG sites within the potential pSTAT3-targeting S100a8 promoter region in CALRDEL cells as compared to CALRINS cells, suggesting that distinct epigenetic alteration could factor into the divergent S100A8 levels in these cells. The functional analysis confirmed that S100A8 non-redundantly contributed to accelerated cellular proliferation and reduced apoptosis in CALRDEL cells. Clinical validation showed significantly enhanced S100A8 expression in CALRDEL-mutated MPN patients compared to CALRINS-mutated cases, and thrombocytosis was less prominent in those with S100A8 upregulation. Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion causes exacerbated neuronal damage involving excessive neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. ROS is considered a signal molecule to activate NLRP3; thus, the ROS/NLRP3/pyroptosis axis plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI). Therefore, targeting the inhibition of the ROS/NLRP3/pyroptosis axis may be a promising therapeutic tactic for CIRI. Epimedium (EP) contains many active ingredients (ICA, ICS II, and ICT), which have a wide range of pharmacological activities. However, whether EP can protect against CIRI remains unknown. Thus, in this study, we designed to investigate the effect and possible underlying mechanism of EP on CIRI. The results showed that treatment with EP dramatically mitigated brain damage in rats following CIRI, which was achieved by suppressing mitochondrial oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. Furthermore, we identified the ROS/NLRP3/pyroptosis axis as a vital process and NLRP3 as a vital target in EP-mediated protection. Most interestingly, the main compounds of EP directly bonded with NLRP3, as reflected by molecular docking, which indicated that NLRP3 might be a promising therapeutic target for EP-elicited cerebral protection. A new in-soil tensile test apparatus was developed to simulate the in-soil stress condition of geosynthetics in a real working state. An in-soil tensile test with or without friction was conducted, along with in-air tensile tests of eight types of geosynthetics, to evaluate tensile properties, including tensile load and secant tensile stiffness under different confining stresses using various methods. Under confinement, the tensile properties of geosynthetics increased with growing confinement, which were greater than those for the in-air tensile test, and the tensile properties were similar for tests with or without friction. The tensile load improvement factors FT−σ and fT−σ were introduced to quantify the confinement and reinforcement–soil friction differences between different tests, and the improvement ratios γ1 and γ2 were proposed to quantify the improvement of tensile load under confinement for the test with and without friction, respectively. Two formulas were proposed to predict the confined tensile properties of geosynthetics. The results showed that confinement was the major factor that improved the tensile properties of geosynthetics compared to reinforcement–soil friction. When the improvement ratio is not less than 1.5, the confined tensile load should replace the in-air tensile load with the tensile strength design of geosynthetics, which provides an insight into the design of reinforced soil structures. Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation have been implicated in the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases, including diabetes mellitus (DM), metabolic syndrome (MS), fatty liver (FL), atherosclerosis (AS), and obesity. Molecular hydrogen (H2) has long been considered a physiologically inert gas. In the last two decades, accumulating evidence from pre-clinical and clinical studies has indicated that H2 may act as an antioxidant to exert therapeutic and preventive effects on various disorders, including metabolic diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying the action of H2 remain unclear. The purpose of this review was to (1) provide an overview of the current research on the potential effects of H2 on metabolic diseases; (2) discuss the possible mechanisms underlying these effects, including the canonical anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects, as well as suppression of ER stress, activation of autophagy, improvement of mitochondrial function, regulation of gut microbiota, and other possible mechanisms. The potential target molecules of H2 will also be discussed. With more high-quality clinical trials and in-depth mechanism research, it is believed that H2 will eventually be applied to clinical practice in the future, to benefit more patients with metabolic disease. To promote the functional applications of lotus root polysaccharides (LRPs), the effects of noncovalent polyphenol binding on their physicochemical properties, as well as antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities, were investigated. Ferulic acid (FA) and chlorogenic acid (CHA) were spontaneously bound to the LRP to prepare the complexes LRP-FA1, LRP-FA2, LRP-FA3, LRP-CHA1, LRP-CHA2 and LRP-CHA3, and their mass ratios of polyphenol to LRP were, respectively, 121.57, 61.18, 34.79, 2359.58, 1276.71 and 545.08 mg/g. Using the physical mixture of the LRP and polyphenols as a control, the noncovalent interaction between them in the complexes was confirmed by ultraviolet and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The interaction increased their average molecular weights by 1.11~2.27 times compared to the LRP. The polyphenols enhanced the antioxidant capacity and macrophage-stimulating activity of the LRP depending on their binding amount. Particularly, the DPPH radical scavenging activity and FRAP antioxidant ability were positively related to the FA binding amount but negatively related to the CHA binding amount. The NO production of the macrophages stimulated by the LRP was inhibited by the co-incubation with free polyphenols; however, the inhibition was eliminated by the noncovalent binding. The complexes could stimulate the NO production and tumor necrosis factor-α secretion more effectively than the LRP. (1) Background: Euryale ferox Salisb is a large aquatic plant of the water lily family and an edible economic crop with medicinal value. The annual output of Euryale ferox Salisb shell in China is higher than 1000 tons, often as waste or used as fuel, resulting in waste of resources and environmental pollution. We isolated and identified the corilagin monomer from Euryale ferox Salisb shell and discovered its potential anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of corilagin isolated from Euryale ferox Salisb shell. (2) Methods: We predict the anti-inflammatory mechanism by pharmacology. LPS was added to 264.7 cell medium to induce an inflammatory state, and the safe action range of corilagin was screened using CCK-8. The Griess method was used to determine NO content. The presence of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-10 was determined by ELISA to evaluate the effect of corilagin on the secretion of inflammatory factors, while that of reactive oxygen species was detected by flow cytometry. The gene expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6, COX-2, and iNOS were determined using qRT-PCR. qRT-PCR and Western blot were used to detect the mRNA and expression of target genes in the network pharmacologic prediction pathway. (3) Results: Network pharmacology analysis revealed that the anti-inflammatory effect of corilagin may be related to MAPK and TOLL-like receptor signaling pathways. The results demonstrated the presence of an anti-inflammatory effect, as indicated by the reduction in the level of NO, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, IL-10, and ROS in Raw264.7 cells induced by LPS. The results suggest that corilagin reduced the expression of TNF-α, IL-6, COX-2, and iNOS genes in Raw264.7 cells induced by LPS. The downregulation of the phosphorylation of IκB-α protein related to the toll-like receptor signaling pathway and upregulation of the phosphorylation of key proteins in the MAPK signaling pathway, P65 and JNK, resulted in reduced tolerance toward lipopolysaccharide, allowing for the exertion of the immune response. (4) Conclusions: The results demonstrate the significant anti-inflammatory effect of corilagin from Euryale ferox Salisb shell. This compound regulates the tolerance state of macrophages toward lipopolysaccharide through the NF-κB signaling pathway and plays an immunoregulatory role. Data analysis is an important part of aero engine health management. In order to complete accurate condition monitoring, it is necessary to establish more effective analysis tools. Therefore, an integrated algorithm library dedicated for engine anomaly detection is established, which is PyPEFD (Python Package for Engine Fault Detection). Different algorithms for baseline modeling, anomaly detection and trend analysis are presented and compared. In this paper, the simulation data are used to verify the function of the anomaly detection algorithms, successfully completing the detection of multiple faults and comparing the accuracy algorithm under different conditions. This research aimed to explore the interaction between lotus root polysaccharides (LRPs) and phenolic compounds, and to study the effects of phenolic binding on the structural and functional properties of LRPs. The influences of pH, temperature, and NaCl and phenol concentration on the binding ratio of gallic acid (GA)/epigallocatechin (EGC) to LRPs were evaluated. LRP-GA/EGC complexes with different phenolic binding amounts were then prepared and characterized via ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and average molecular weight (MW) measurements. The results suggest that hydrogen bonds contributed to the binding of GA/EGC and LRPs. The phenolic binding led to significant changes in the structure and MW of LRPs. Moreover, antioxidant activity and the macrophage-stimulating effect of LRPs were improved after binding with GA/EGC, depending on the binding amount and type of polyphenol. Interestingly, LRP-GA/EGC complexes with polyphenol binding amounts of 105.4 mg/g and 50.71 mg/g, respectively, showed better stimulation effects on the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL10 secretion of macrophages when compared to LRPs. Background: Desertification is one of the main obstacles to global sustainable development. Monitoring, evaluating and mastering its driving factors are very important for the prevention and control of desertification. As one of the largest deserts in China, the development of desertification in Otindag Sandy Land (OSL) resulted in the reduction in land productivity and serious ecological/environmental consequences. Although many ecological restoration projects have been carried out, the vegetation restoration of OSL and the impact mechanism of climate and human activities on desertification remain unclear. Methods: Taking OSL as the research area, this paper constructs the desertification index by using the remote sensing images and meteorological and socio-economic data, between 1986 and 2016, and analyzes the spatio-temporal evolution process and driving factors of desertification by using trend analysis and spearman rank correlation. Results: The results showed that: (1) Desertification in the OSL has fluctuated greatly during the past 30 years. Desertification recovered between 1986 and 1990, expanded and increased between 1990 and 2000, reduced between 2000 and 2004, developed rapidly between 2004 and 2007, and recovered again between 2007 and 2016; (2) The desertification of OSL is dominated by a non-significant change trend, accounting for 73.27%. In the significant change trend, the area of desertification rising trend is 20.32%, which is mainly located in the north and east, and the area of declining trend is 6.41%, which is mainly located in the southwest; (3) Desertification is the result of the superposition of climate and human activities. Climate change is the main influencing factor, followed by human activities, and the superposition effects of the two are spatio-temporal differences. Conclusions: These results shed light on the development of desertification in OSL and the relative importance and complex interrelationship between human activities and climate in regulating the process of desertification. Based on this, we suggest continuing to implement the ecological restoration policy and avoid the destruction of vegetation by large-scale animal husbandry in order to improve the situation of desertification. Litchi polysaccharides are a kind of macromolecular polymers with various biological activities and a wide range of molecular weights. In this study, two separate fractions, with average molecular weights of 378.67 kDa (67.33%) and 16.96 kDa (6.95%), which were referred to as LP1 and LP2, respectively, were separated using an ultrafiltration membrane. Their physicochemical properties, and immunomodulatory and prebiotic activity were compared. The results revealed that LP2 contained more neutral sugar, arabinose, galactose and rhamnose, but less uronic acid, protein, mannose and glucose than LP1. Compared with LP1, LP2 possessed higher solubility and lower apparent viscosity. LP2 exhibited stronger stimulation on macrophage secretion of NO, TNF-α and IL-6, as well as better proliferation of Lactobacillus plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium adolescentis. These results suggest that an ultrafiltration membrane might be used to prepare a highly-active polysaccharide fraction from litchi pulp that may be used for food or drug development. Browning limits the commercial value of fresh-cut lotus root slices. Melatonin has been reported to play crucial plant roles in growth and development. However, the mechanisms in repressing the browning of fresh-cut lotuses are still unclear. In this study, fresh-cut lotus root slices were treated with melatonin, the physical signs of browning were tested, and then the selected samples (0 d, 6 d, 12 d) were used in multiomics analysis. Fresh-cut lotus root slices with a thickness of 4 mm were soaked in a 40 mmol/L melatonin solution for 10 min; then, the slices were packed in pallets and packages and stored at 10 ± 1 °C. The results show that the 40 mmol/L melatonin selected for repressing the browning of lotus roots significantly delayed the decrease in water, total soluble solid content, and Vitamin C, decreased the growth of microorganisms, enhanced total phenolic content, improved total antioxidant capacity, and decreased ·OH, H2O2, and O2−· contents. Moreover, this treatment enhanced phenylalanine ammonialyase, polyphenol oxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities and reduced peroxidase activities and soluble quinones. NnSOD (104590242), NnCAT (104609297), and some NnPOD genes showed a similar transcript accumulation pattern with enzyme activity. It can be seen from these results that exogenous melatonin accelerated an enhancement in the antioxidant system and AsA-GSH cycle system by regulating ROS-metabolism-related genes, thereby improving the capacity to withstand browning and the quality of lotus root slices. The microbiome also showed that melatonin suppressed the fertility of spoilage organisms, such as Pseudomonas, Tolumonas, Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, and Proteobacteria. Metabonomics data uncovered that the metabolites of flavonoid biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, tyrosine metabolism, and phenylalanine metabolism were involved in the process. Aimed at the objective of anti-disturbance and reducing data transmission, this article discusses a novel dynamic neural network (DNN) modeling-based anti-disturbance control for a system under the framework of an event trigger. In order to describe dynamical characteristics of irregular disturbances, exogenous DNN disturbance models with different excitation functions are firstly introduced. A novel disturbance observer-based adaptive regulation (DOBAR) method is then proposed, which can capture the dynamics of unknown disturbance. By integrating the augmented triggering condition and the convex optimization method, an effective anti-disturbance controller is then found to guarantee the system stability and the convergence of the output. Meanwhile, both the augmented state and the system output are constrained within given regions. Moreover, the Zeno phenomenon existing in event-triggered mechanisms is also successfully avoided. To determine the anti-heat stress and antioxidant effects of genistein and the underlying mechanisms, lipofuscin, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and survival under stress were first detected in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans); then the localization and quantification of the fluorescent protein was determined by detecting the fluorescently labeled protein mutant strain; in addition, the aging-related mRNAs were detected by applying real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR in C. elegans. The results indicate that genistein substantially extended the lifespan of C. elegans under oxidative stress and heat conditions; and remarkably reduced the accumulation of lipofuscin in C. elegans under hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and 35 °C stress conditions; in addition, it reduced the generation of ROS caused by H2O2 and upregulated the expression of daf-16, ctl-1, hsf-1, hsp-16.2, sip-1, sek-1, pmk-1, and eat-2, whereas it downregulated the expression of age-1 and daf-2 in C. elegans; similarly, it upregulated the expression of daf-16, sod-3, ctl-1, hsf-1, hsp-16.2, sip-1, sek-1, pmk-1, jnk-1 skn-1, and eat-2, whereas it downregulated the expression of age-1, daf-2, gst-4, and hsp-12.6 in C. elegans at 35 °C; moreover, it increased the accumulation of HSP-16.2 and SKN-1 proteins in nematodes under 35 °C and H2O2 conditions; however, it failed to prolong the survival time in the deleted mutant MQ130 nematodes under 35 °C and H2O2 conditions. These results suggest that genistein promote anti-heat stress and antioxidant effects in C. elegans via insulin/-insulin-like growth factor signaling (IIS), heat shock protein (HSP), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), dietary restriction (DR), and mitochondrial pathways. SARS-CoV-2 is the causative agent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccination, supported by social and public health measures, has proven efficacious for reducing disease severity and virus spread. However, the emergence of highly transmissible viral variants that escape prior immunity highlights the need for additional mitigation approaches. Heparin binds the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and can inhibit virus entry and replication in susceptible human cell lines and bronchial epithelial cells. Primary infection predominantly occurs via the nasal epithelium, but the nasal cell biology of SARS-CoV-2 is not well studied. We hypothesized that prophylactic intranasal administration of heparin may provide strain-agnostic protection for household contacts or those in high-risk settings against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Therefore, we investigated the ability of heparin to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection and replication in differentiated human nasal epithelial cells and showed that prolonged exposure to heparin inhibits virus infection. Furthermore, we establish a method for PCR detection of SARS-CoV-2 viral genomes in heparin-treated samples that can be adapted for the detection of viruses in clinical studies. Kidney–ureter–bladder (KUB) imaging is a radiological examination with a low cost, low radiation, and convenience. Although emergency room clinicians can arrange KUB images easily as a first-line examination for patients with suspicious urolithiasis, interpreting the KUB images correctly is difficult for inexperienced clinicians. Obtaining a formal radiology report immediately after a KUB imaging examination can also be challenging. Recently, artificial-intelligence-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been developed to help clinicians who are not experts make correct diagnoses for further treatment more effectively. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a CAD system for KUB imaging based on a deep learning model designed to help first-line emergency room clinicians diagnose urolithiasis accurately. A total of 355 KUB images were retrospectively collected from 104 patients who were diagnosed with urolithiasis at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Then, we trained a deep learning model with a ResNet architecture to classify KUB images in terms of the presence or absence of kidney stones with this dataset of pre-processed images. Finally, we tuned the parameters and tested the model experimentally. The results show that the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-measure of the model were 0.977, 0.953, 1, and 0.976 on the validation set and 0.982, 0.964, 1, and 0.982 on the testing set, respectively. Moreover, the results demonstrate that the proposed model performed well compared to the existing CNN-based methods and was able to detect urolithiasis in KUB images successfully. We expect the proposed approach to help emergency room clinicians make accurate diagnoses and reduce unnecessary radiation exposure from computed tomography (CT) scans, along with the associated medical costs. We introduced a novel surgery that combines ultrasound guidance, miniaturization and Galdakao-modified supine Valdivia (GMSV) position in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and evaluated the safety and efficacy. This retrospective, single-center study retrospectively reviewed 150 patients who underwent ultrasound-guided mini-PCNL in the GMSV position from November 2019 to March 2022. All perioperative parameters were collected. Stone-free status was defined as no residual stones or clinically insignificant residual fragments (CIRF) <0.4 cm on postoperative day one. Among the 150 patients, the mean age was 56.96 years. The mean stone size was 3.19 cm (427 mm2). The mean S.T.O.N.E. score was 7.61, including 36 patients (24%) with scores ≥9. The mean operative time was 66.22 min, and the success rate of renal access creation in the first attempt was 88.7%. One hundred and forty (93.3%) patients were stone free. The mean decrease in Hemoglobin was 1.04 g/dL, and no patient needed a blood transfusion. Complications included transient hematuria (n = 13, 8.7%), bladder blood clot retention (n = 2, 1.3%), fever (n = 15, 10%) and sepsis (n = 2, 1.3%). Totally X-ray-free ultrasound-guided mini-PCNL in the GMSV position is feasible, safe and effective for patients with upper urinary tract stones, indicating the synergistic and complementary effects of the three novel techniques. PTFE/Al reactive material is an energetic material that releases energy under impact conditions, resulting in a wide range of application prospects. In order to improve its damage ability—considering the higher heat of the reaction per unit mass when Ni2O3 is involved in the aluminothermic reaction—we designed and studied PTFE/Al/Ni2O3, a reaction material based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). We also designed two other kinds (PTFE/Al, PTFE/Al/CuO) for comparative study, with the mass fraction of the metal oxides added at 10%, 20%, and 30%, respectively. The quasi-static compression properties and impact initiation behavior of the material were investigated by a universal material testing machine and a drop hammer test. The reaction process of different materials under a high strain rate was recorded using a high-speed camera. The results show that with the increase in Ni2O3 content, the strength of the PTFE/Al/Ni2O3 reactive material shows an increasing trend followed by a decreasing trend. Among the three reactive materials, when the content of Al/Ni2O3 reaches 30 wt.%, the reaction duration is the longest (at 4 ms) and the reaction fireball is the largest. In this study, we developed a sustained-release transdermal delivery system containing losartan potassium (LP) and verapamil hydrochloride (VPH). LP and VPH have low bioavailability and long half-life. Therefore, the development of an optimum administration mode is necessary to overcome these drawbacks and enhance the antihypertensive effect. A transdermal diffusion meter was used to determine the optimal formulation of LP-VPH transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS). Based on in vitro results, a sustained-release patch was prepared. Physical characteristics, including quality, stickiness, and appearance, were evaluated in vitro, while pharmacokinetics and skin irritation were evaluated in vivo. The results showed that 8.3% polyvinyl alcohol, 74.7% polyvinylpyrrolidone K30, 12% oleic acid-azone, and 5% polyacrylic acid resin II provided an optimized TDDS product for effective administration of LP and VPH. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo release tests showed that the system continuously released LP and VPH for 24 h. The pharmacokinetic results indicated that although the maximum concentration was lower, both the area under the curve from 0–time and the mean residence time of the prepared patch were significantly higher than those of the oral preparations. Furthermore, the prepared LP-VPH transdermal patch showed good stability and no skin irritation. The developed LP-VPH TDDS showed a sustained-release effect and good characteristics and pharmacokinetics; therefore, it is an ideal formulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Egg-white protein has an abundance of hydrophobic amino acids and could be a potential emulsifier after modification. Here, egg-white protein was modified via ultrasonic and transglutaminase treatments to destroy the globular structure. The egg-white protein gel particles (EWP-GPs) were prepared and then a novel highly stable EWP-chitosan double-layer emulsion was constructed. When ultrasonic treatment was applied at 240 W and TGase (20 U/g EWP) treatment, the EWP-GPs had a low particle size and good emulsification performance. The particle size of EWP-GPs was a minimum of 287 nm, and the polymer dispersity index (PDI) was 0.41. The three-phase contact angle (θo/w) of EWP-GPs was 79.6° (lower than 90°), performing with good wettability. Based on these results, the EWP-chitosan double-layer emulsion was prepared through the EWP-GPs being treated with 240 W ultrasound, TGase, and chitosan in this study. When the double-layer emulsion had 0.6% (v/v) chitosan, the zeta potential of the double-layer emulsion was −1.1 mV and the double-layer emulsion had a small particle size (56.87 µm). The creaming index of double-layer emulsion at 0.6% (v/v) chitosan was 16.3% and the droplets were dispersed uniformly. According to the rheological results, the storage modulus (G′) was larger than the loss modulus (G″) in the whole frequency, indicating the formation of an elastic gel network structure in the emulsion. It is hoped to develop a novel food-grade stabilizer and a stable double-layer emulsion, providing new environment-friendly processing in hen egg products and delivery systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
