The smart grid (SG) is an efficient and reliable framework capable of controlling computers, automation, new technologies, and devices. Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is a crucial part of the SG, facilitating two-way communication between users and service providers (SPs). Computation, storage, and communication are extremely limited as the AMI's device is typically deployed outdoors and connected to an open network. Therefore, an authentication and key agreement protocol is necessary to ensure the security and confidentiality of communications. Existing research still does not meet the anonymity, perfect forward secrecy, and resource-limited requirements of the SG environment. To address this issue, we advance a lightweight authentication and key agreement scheme based on elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). The security of the proposed protocol is rigorously proven under the random oracle model (ROM), and was verified by a ProVerif tool. Nuclear power plants (NPPs) require continuous monitoring of various systems, structures, and components to ensure safe and efficient operations. The critical safety testing of new fuel compositions and the analysis of the effects of power transients on core temperatures can be achieved through modeling and simulations. They capture the dynamics of the physical phenomenon associated with failure modes and facilitate the creation of digital twins (DTs). Accurate reconstruction of fields of interest (e.g., temperature, pressure, velocity) from sensor measurements is crucial to establish a two-way communication between physical experiments and models. Sensor placement is highly constrained in most nuclear subsystems due to challenging operating conditions and inherent spatial limitations. This study develops optimized data-driven sensor placements for full-field reconstruction within reactor and steam generator subsystems of NPPs. Optimized constrained sensors reconstruct field of interest within a tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) fuel irradiation experiment, a lumped parameter model of a nuclear fuel test rod and a steam generator. The optimization procedure leverages reduced-order models of flow physics to provide a highly accurate full-field reconstruction of responses of interest, noise-induced uncertainty quantification and physically feasible sensor locations. The long-term goal of this research is the development of a stand-alone tactile device for the communication of speech for persons with profound sensory deficits as well as for applications for persons with intact hearing and vision. Studies were conducted with a phoneme-based tactile display of speech consisting of a 4-by-6 array of tactors worn on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the forearm. Unique tactile signals were assigned to the 39 English phonemes. Study I consisted of training and testing on the identification of 4-phoneme words. Performance on a trained set of 100 words averaged 87% across the three participants and generalized well to a novel set of words (77%). Study II consisted of two-way messaging between two users of TAPS (TActile Phonemic Sleeve) for 13 h over 45 days. The participants conversed with each other by inputting text that was translated into tactile phonemes sent over the device. Messages were identified with an accuracy of 73% correct in conjunction with 82% of the words. Although rates of communication were slow (roughly 1 message per minute), the results obtained with this ecologically valid procedure represent progress toward the goal of a stand-alone tactile device for speech communication. Rapid advances in technology and shifting tastes among motorists have reworked the contemporary automobile production sector. Driving is now much safer and more convenient than ever before thanks to a plethora of new technology and apps. Millions of people are hurt every year despite the fact that automobiles are networked and have several sensors and radars for collision avoidance. Each year, many of them are injured in car accidents and need emergency care, and sadly, the fatality rate is growing. Vehicle and pedestrian collisions are still a serious problem, making it imperative to advance methods that prevent them. This paper refines our previous efficient VANET-based pedestrian safety system based on two-way communication between smart cars and the cell phones of vulnerable road users. We implemented the scheme using C and NS3 to simulate different traffic scenarios. Our objective is to measure the additional overhead to protect vulnerable road users. Nowadays, the availability of affordable multi-constellation multi-frequency receivers has broadened access to accurate positioning. The abundance of satellite signals coupled with the implementation of ground- and satellite-based correction services has unlocked the potential for achieving real-time centimetre-level positioning with low-cost instrumentation. Most of the current and future applications cannot exploit well-consolidated satellite positioning techniques such as Network Real Time Kinematic (RTK) and Precise Point Positioning (PPP); the former is inapplicable for large user bases due to the necessity of a two-way communication link between the user and the NRTK service provider, while the latter necessitates long convergence times that are not in keeping with kinematic application. In this context, the hybrid PPP-RTK technique has emerged as a potential solution to meet the demand for real-time, low-cost, accurate, and precise positioning. This paper presents an Internet of Things (IoT) GNSS device developed with low-cost hardware; it leverages a commercial PPP-RTK correction service which delivers corrections via IP. The main target is to obtain both horizontal and vertical decimetre-level accuracies in urban kinematic tests, along with other requisites such as solution availability and the provision of connection ports for interfacing an IoT network. A vehicle-borne kinematic test has been conducted to evaluate the device performance. The results show that (i) the IoT device can deliver horizontal and vertical positioning solutions at decimetre-level accuracy with the targeted solution availability, and (ii) the provided IoT ports are feasible for gathering the position solutions over an internet connection. With the increasing connectivity between multiple smart devices in the Internet of Vehicles, privacy and security have become stringent threats due to unauthorized access. To overcome this issue, designing continuous authentication systems has become an important research topic because of the advantages of continuous monitoring of users after the initial access to the smart devices. Unfortunately, the existing systems are based on a third-party centralized structure, and most of them suffer storage pressure on equipment, thus resulting in significant security hazards and limited performance. In this paper, we propose a multistage continuous authentication system based on blockchain technology and the IPFS, which achieves decentralization and reduces storage pressure. In the first stage of authentication, we adopt Hyperledger Fabric to implement the underlying technical architecture of the blockchain to enhance the security and reliability of identity parameters. The preoutputs of the first-stage authentication are compared against behavioral biometric characteristics stored in the IPFS that aim to accomplish the final authentication. In particular, we use fuzzy extractors to deal with behavioral biometric feature templates, thus solving the privacy problem caused by user information leakage. To evaluate the security of our system, we prove the correctness of the communication protocol and two-way authentication of the scheme using BAN Logic. Furthermore, we use Hyperledger Caliper to analyze the impact of the sending rate of authentication requests on various performance parameters such as throughput, memory, and CPU utilization of the authentication system. Security and experimental results show that: (i) We solve the problem of centralized authentication and can resist replay attacks. This study investigates the use of ultra-wideband (UWB) tags in traffic conflict techniques (TCT) for the estimation of time occupancy in a real-world setting. This study describes UWB technology and its application in the TCT framework. Many experiments were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the occupancy time measurement using a UWB-based tag. The UWB performance was measured using data from UWB tags as well as a video camera system by subtracting the time occupancy within a conflict zone. The results show that the UWB-based system can be utilized to estimate occupancy time with a mean absolute error difference from ground truth measurements of 0.43 s in the case of using two tags and 0.06 s in the case of using one tag in an 8 m × 8 m study area with double-sided two-way communication. This study also highlights the advantages and limitations of using UWB technology in TCT and discusses potential applications and future research directions. The findings of this study suggest that the UWB-based localization of multiple tags needs further improvements to enable consistent multi-tag tracking. In future work, this technology could be utilized to estimate post-encroachment time (PET) in various traffic scenarios, which could improve road safety and reduce the risk of collisions. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of reality technology programs in forest education by systematically reviewing prior studies that have verified the effectiveness of reality technology-aided forest education content. Additionally, we checked the current status of reality technology content-based forest-related education. We searched for data on forest education using reality technology published until November 2022 in both domestic and foreign web-based academic databases. In total, 117 research papers were identified, and 13 were selected based on the data selection criteria. After systematic analysis, we inferred the following: First, most reality technology-based forest education programs use augmented reality (AR); the software is customized and developed for mobile devices because AR is effective in two-way communication owing to the nature of the technology. Second, forest education showed greater cognitive and affective effects when reality technology was used (cognitive effect: 71.4%; affective effect: 63%) than when it was not used. Third, forest education using reality technology produced more than 90% cognitive and affective effects (cognitive effect: 90%; affective effect: 100%). Therefore, forest education using realistic technology can have a positive effect indoors. The present study examined parents' and teachers' perceptions of student learning in Spanish–English Dual Language Education (DLE) programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants included 72 parents of students from kindergarten to second grade and eight teachers in two schools in the southeastern U.S. Parents retrospectively reported their perceptions of their children's instruction and learning experiences in English and Spanish during the 2020–2021 school year. Teachers reported if their students had opportunities to practice oral bilingual skills and their perception of students' improvement in English and Spanish skills. Parents reported that there were more opportunities to practice English than there were to practice Spanish. Teachers reported that remote instruction offered fewer opportunities than hybrid instruction did to practice oral language skills. Overall, the teachers agreed that students' language skills in English and Spanish improved. Similarly, the parents agreed that students' language skills improved; however, they reported that their English skills improved more than their Spanish skills did. Student and family background factors, such as language fluency and parental education, were negatively associated with barriers to remote access. Distribution grids must be regularly updated to meet the global electricity demand. Some of these updates result in fundamental changes to the structure of the grid network. Some recent changes include two-way communication infrastructure, the rapid development of distributed generations (DGs) in different forms, and the installation of smart measurement tools. In addition to other changes, these lead to distribution grid modifications, allowing more advanced features. Even though these advanced technologies enhance distribution grid performance, the operation, management, and control of active distribution networks (ADNs) have become more complicated. For example, distribution system state estimation (DSSE) calculations have been introduced as a tool to estimate the performance of distribution grids. These DSSE computations are highly dependent on data obtained from measurement devices in distribution grids. However, sufficient measurement devices are not available in ADNs due to economic constraints and various configurations of distribution grids. Thus, the modeling of pseudo-measurements using conventional and machine learning techniques from historical information in distribution grids is applied to address the lack of real measurements in ADNs. Different types of measurements (real, pseudo, and virtual measurements), alongside network parameters, are fed into model-based or data-based DSSE approaches to estimate the state variables of the distribution grid. The results obtained through DSSE should be sufficiently accurate for the appropriate management and overall performance evaluation of a distribution grid in a control center. However, distribution grids are prone to different cyberattacks, which can endanger their safe operation. One particular type of cyberattack is known as a false data injection attack (FDIA) on measurement data. Attackers try to inject false data into the measurements of nodes to falsify DSSE results. The FDIA can sometimes bypass poor traditional data-detection processes. If FDIAs cannot be identified successfully, the distribution grid's performance is degraded significantly. Currently, different machine learning applications are applied widely to model pseudo-measurements, calculate DSSE variables, and identify FDIAs on measurement data to achieve the desired distribution grid operation and performance. In this study, we present a comprehensive review investigating the use of supervised machine learning (SML) in distribution grids to enhance and improve the operation and performance of advanced distribution grids according to three perspectives: (1) pseudo-measurement generation (via short-term load forecasting); (2) DSSE calculation; and (3) FDIA detection on measurement data. The spatial political logic of the construction of Chinese metropolitan areas (CMAs) is unique and complex, involving the interaction of power, spatial production, and the construction of political rationality between multiple scales. Taking the representative Nanjing metropolitan area as an example, we use the "material–organizational–discursive" analytical framework of politics of scale theory to analyze the construction logic of CMAs. This study finds the following: (1) In general, the CMA is a high-quality spatial construction resulting from multi-city negotiation, inter-provincial collaboration, and central–territory linkage, and has generally undergone a process of increasing the power of subjects, nested power relations, frequent scale interactions, and complex interest games; among them, planning is not only a scale tool for competing for power, but also an important representation of the results of multiple power games. (2) In terms of the construction of material space, both the delineation of boundaries and the cross-border connection of infrastructure represent rational thinking and stand as two-way choices of the two power subjects in the MA based on the maintenance and expansion of their own spatial development rights. (3) In terms of organizational space construction, CMAs mainly adopt flexible means, with bilateral and multilateral cooperation at the horizontal level, while there is a certain power inequality at the vertical level. (4) In the construction of discursive space, CMAs have experienced increasing construction significance, escalating scale subjects, and overlapping discourse narratives, and the contrast of power relations has also changed. The contribution of this paper is an expansion of the analytical framework of politics of scale based on the division of spatial dimensions, which provides a new perspective for understanding the construction of CMAs, and also helps us to picture Chinese city–regionalism. This research proposes a study on two-way communication between deaf/mute and normal people using an Android application. Despite advancements in technology, there is still a lack of mobile applications that facilitate two-way communication between deaf/mute and normal people, especially by using Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM). This project consists of three parts: First, we use BIM letters, which enables the recognition of BIM letters and BIM combined letters to form a word. In this part, a MobileNet pre-trained model is implemented to train the model with a total of 87,000 images for 29 classes, with a 10% test size and a 90% training size. The second part is BIM word hand gestures, which consists of five classes that are trained with the SSD-MobileNet-V2 FPNLite 320 × 320 pre-trained model with a speed of 22 s/frame rate and COCO mAP of 22.2, with a total of 500 images for all five classes and first-time training set to 2000 steps, while the second- and third-time training are set to 2500 steps. The third part is Android application development using Android Studio, which contains the features of the BIM letters and BIM word hand gestures, with the trained models converted into TensorFlow Lite. This feature also includes the conversion of speech to text, whereby this feature allows converting speech to text through the Android application. Thus, BIM letters obtain 99.75% accuracy after training the models, while BIM word hand gestures obtain 61.60% accuracy. The suggested system is validated as a result of these simulations and tests. In today's industry, the fourth industrial revolution is underway, characterized by the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data. One of the key pillars of this revolution is the technology of digital twin, which is rapidly gaining importance in various industries. However, the concept of digital twins is often misunderstood or misused as a buzzword, leading to confusion in its definition and applications. This observation inspired the authors of this paper to create their own demonstration applications that allow the control of both the real and virtual systems through automatic two-way communication and mutual influence in context of digital twins. The paper aims to demonstrate the use of digital twin technology aimed at discrete manufacturing events in two case studies. In order to create the digital twins for these case studies, the authors used technologies as Unity, Game4Automation, Siemens TIA portal, and Fishertechnik models. The first case study involves the creation of a digital twin for a production line model, while the second case study involves the virtual extension of a warehouse stacker using a digital twin. These case studies will form the basis for the creation of pilot courses for Industry 4.0 education and can be further modified for the development of Industry 4.0 educational materials and technical practice. In conclusion, selected technologies are affordable, which makes the presented methodologies and educational studies accessible to a wide range of researchers and solution developers tackling the issue of digital twins, with a focus on discrete manufacturing events. Members of the Candida haemulonii species complex are multidrug-resistant emergent yeast pathogens able to cause superficial and invasive infections in risk populations. Fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a critical role in the pathogenicity and virulence of several species and may perform essential functions during infections, such as carrying virulence factors that behave in two-way communications with the host, affecting survival and fungal resistance. Our study aimed to describe EV production from Candida haemulonii var. vulnera and evaluate whether murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells respond to their stimuli by generating an oxidative response after 24 h. For this purpose, reactive oxygen species detection assays demonstrated that high concentrations of yeast and EVs (1010 particles/mL) of Candida haemulonii did not change macrophage viability. However, the macrophages recognized these EVs and triggered an oxidative response through the classical NOX-2 pathway, increasing O2•− and H2O2 levels. However, this stress did not cause lipid peroxidation in the RAW 264.7 cells and neither lead to the activation of the COX-2–PGE2 pathway. Thus, our data suggest that low concentrations of C. haemulonii EVs are not recognized by the classical pathway of the oxidative burst generated by macrophages, which might be an advantage allowing the transport of virulence factors via EVs, not identified by the host immune system that could work as fine tube regulators during infections caused by C. haemulonii. In contrast, C. haemulonii var. vulnera and high EV concentrations activated microbicidal actions in macrophages. Therefore, we propose that EVs could participate in the virulence of the species and that these particles could be a source of antigens to be exploited as new therapeutic targets. This paper focuses on Internet of Things (IoT) architectures and knowledge generation out of streams of events as the primary elements concerning the creation of user-centric IoT services. We provide a general, symmetrical IoT architecture, which enables two-way bidirectional communication between things and users within an application domain. We focus on two main components of the architecture (i.e., Event Engine and Process Engine) that handle event transformation by implementing parametric Complex Event Processing (CEP). More specifically, we describe and implement the transformation cycle of events starting from raw IoT data to their processing and transformation of events for calculating information that we need in an IoT-enabled application context. The implementation includes a library of composite transformations grouping the gradual and sequential steps for transforming basic IoT events into business events, which include ingestion, event splitting, and calculation of measurements' average value. The appropriateness and possibility of inclusion and integration of the implementation in an IoT environment are demonstrated by providing our implementation for a smart farming application domain with four scenarios that each reflect a user's requirements. Further, we discuss the quality properties of each scenario. Ultimately, we propose an IoT architecture and, specifically, a parametric CEP model and implementation for future researchers and practitioners who aspire to build IoT applications. The development of an effective vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus became the hope for halting the spread of the disease. In recent years, social networks have become important tools for political and strategic communication in the dialogue with citizens. Therefore, the messages emitted through them were important to address vaccine hesitancy and achieve collective immunity. This paper analyses the use of Twitter by politicians and institutions in EU Member States during the first fifty days after the Commission's marketing authorisation of the first COVID-19 vaccine (21 December 2020 to 8 February 2021). To do so, a triple approach content analysis was carried out (quantitative, qualitative and discursive on feelings) applied to 1913 tweets published by the official profiles of the prime ministers, health ministers, governments and health ministries of Germany, Spain, France and Italy, the four most populous EU countries. The results point out that politicians and institutions gave preference to other issues on their political agenda over vaccine-related issues. Supervised personal training is most effective in improving the health effects of exercise in older adults. Yet, low frequency (60 min, 1–3 sessions/week) of trainer contact limits influence on behavior change outside sessions. Strategies to extend the effect of trainer contact outside of supervision and that integrate meaningful and intelligent two-way communication to provide complex and interactive problem solving may motivate older adults to "move more and sit less" and sustain positive behaviors to further improve health. This paper describes the experimental protocol of a 16-week pilot RCT (N = 46) that tests the impact of supplementing supervised exercise (i.e., control) with a technology-based behavior-aware text-based virtual "Companion" that integrates a human-in-the-loop approach with wirelessly transmitted sensor-based activity measurement to deliver behavior change strategies using socially engaging, contextually salient, and tailored text message conversations in near-real-time. Primary outcomes are total-daily and patterns of habitual physical behaviors after 16 and 24 weeks. Exploratory analyses aim to understand Companion's longitudinal behavior effects, its user engagement and relationship to behavior, and changes in cardiometabolic and cognitive outcomes. In this paper, the security of two-way relay communications in the presence of a passive eavesdropper is investigated. Two users communicate via a relay that depends solely on energy harvesting to amplify and forward the received signals. Time switching is employed at the relay to harvest energy and obtain user information. A friendly jammer is utilized to hinder the eavesdropping from wiretapping the information signal. The eavesdropper employs maximal ratio combining and selection combining to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the wiretapped signals. Geometric programming (GP) is used to maximize the secrecy capacity of the system by jointly optimizing the time switching ratio of the relay and transmit power of the two users and jammer. The impact of imperfect channel state information at the eavesdropper for the links between the eavesdropper and the other nodes is determined. Further, the secrecy capacity when the jamming signal is not perfectly cancelled at the relay is examined. The secrecy capacity is shown to be greater with a jammer compared to the case without a jammer. The effect of the relay, jammer, and eavesdropper locations on the secrecy capacity is also studied. It is shown that the secrecy capacity is greatest when the relay is at the midpoint between the users. The closer the jammer is to the eavesdropper, the higher the secrecy capacity as the shorter distance decreases the signal-to-noise ratio of the jammer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is an objective reality that deaf-mute people have difficulty seeking medical treatment. Due to the lack of sign language interpreters, most hospitals in China currently do not have the ability to interpret sign language. Normal medical treatment is a luxury for deaf people. In this paper, we propose a sign language recognition system: Heart-Speaker. Heart-Speaker is applied to a deaf-mute consultation scenario. The system provides a low-cost solution for the difficult problem of treating deaf-mute patients. The doctor only needs to point the Heart-Speaker at the deaf patient and the system automatically captures the sign language movements and translates the sign language semantics. When a doctor issues a diagnosis or asks a patient a question, the system displays the corresponding sign language video and subtitles to meet the needs of two-way communication between doctors and patients. The system uses the MobileNet-YOLOv3 model to recognize sign language. It meets the needs of running on embedded terminals and provides favorable recognition accuracy. We performed experiments to verify the accuracy of the measurements. The experimental results show that the accuracy rate of Heart-Speaker in recognizing sign language can reach 90.77%. This article investigates two-way communications between an access point (AP) and multiple terminals in low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) networks. The main issues considered are the asymmetric transmission traffic on the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), and the unbalanced receivers processing capability at the AP and the terminals. As a solution, a hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access/orthogonal multiple access (NoMA/OMA) scheme together with a joint power and time allocation method is proposed to address these issues. For the system design, we formulated the optimization problem with the aim of minimizing the system power and satisfying the UL and DL transmission rate constraints. Due to the coupling of power and time variables in the objective function and the multi-user interference (MUI) in the UL transmission rate constraints, the formulated problem is shown to be non-linear and non-convex and thus is hard to solve. To obtain a numerical, efficient solution, the original problem is first reformulated to be a convex one relying on the successive convex approximation (SCA) method, and then a numerical efficient solution is thus obtained by using an iterative routine. To study the impact mechanism and effect of agricultural digitization on the agricultural field plays a vital role in achieving the target of high-quality agricultural development. There are three perspectives that can be taken to construct the framework of analysis as to the impact mechanism of agricultural digitization on the high-quality development of agriculture: enhancing agricultural production efficiency, optimizing resource allocation and upgrading the industrial structure. Besides, the threshold effect of the education level of the labor force is also analyzed. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2011 to 2020, the two-way fixed effects model and threshold effect test model are applied to verify the research hypothesis. It has been discovered that agricultural digitization is conducive to promoting the high-quality development of agriculture. Heterogeneity analysis shows that agricultural digitization plays a more significant role in the eastern region than in the central and western regions. There is a single threshold effect that depends on the education level of the rural labor force in the promotion of agricultural digitization to high-quality agricultural development. When the threshold is exceeded, agricultural digitization plays a more significant role in promoting high-quality agricultural development. There are three policy suggestions made to conclude the study. The first one is to improve the construction of agricultural digitization infrastructure. The second one is to pay attention to the differences in the development degree and demand between regions in the process of agricultural digitization construction. Super smart grids (SSGs) are a wide area transmission network that mainly uses renewable energy resources (RERs), contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions and supporting the power infrastructure of multiple countries. The SSGs comprise two-way communication between the loads and sources of different countries, and these loads can be mostly served with numerous types of RERs tied with the grids. The RERs will play a pivotal role in the development of future grids and the generation of electricity. However, the main challenge to tackle in these RERs is that they are intermittent in nature. Due to intermittency in these RERs, transient stability issues have become one of the critical research challenges in SSGs. These stability issues are escalated and become more difficult to handle if a network is vulnerable to an arising of different kinds of faults. To address these problems, multiple approaches to enhance transient stability already exist in the current literature. After reviewing the literature, flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) devices proved more promising in improving transient stability. Among FACTSdevices, UPFC is a versatile FACTS device, which provides complete stability to power system networks in the form of series and shunt compensations. Considering this scenario, a hypothetical network for SSGs is designed in this research work based on the interconnection between two countries, i.e., Denmark and Norway, to address the transient stability issues in SSGs. The complete probabilistic model of the system is also designed to enhance the stability of the system. The results clearly showed that the insertion of UPFC is an effective technique to enhance the transient stability and resilience of the power system networks as compared to other purposed techniques in the literature. The main contribution of this paper is that extensive simulation studies employing accurate RERs models are used to analyze and investigate various problems arising due to the integration of many clusters of RERs in SSGs. Smart grids, together with the Internet of Things, are considered to be the future of the electric energy world. This is possible through a two-way communication between nodes of the grids and computer processing. It is necessary that the communication is easy and safe, and the distance between a point of demand and supply is short, to reduce the electricity loss. All these requirements should be met at the lowest possible cost. In this paper, we study a two-dimensional rectangular grid graph which is considered to be a model of a smart grid; nodes of the graph represent points and devices of the smart grid, while links represent possible ways of communication and energy transfer. We consider the problem of choosing the lowest possible number of locations (nodes, points) of the grid which could serve as energy sources (or a source of different resources) to other nodes in such a way that we ensure reduction in electricity loss and provide safe communication and resistance to failures and increases in energy demand.Therefore, we study minimum doubly connected dominating sets in grid graphs. We show that the proposed solutions are the best possible in terms of the number of source points for the case of narrow grid graphs and we give upper and lower bounds for the case of wide grid graphs. This research proposes a method for auto-monitoring the air cutting condition of a machining process, so the air cutting time can be further improved to enhance the machining efficiency. A two-way data communication module with a CNC controller was established to achieve real-time monitoring and control function via TCP/IP protocol. The module enables the identification of the executing NC block and the cutting time during machining. The spindle load current and cutting vibration signals were used to on-line diagnose the cutting state (effective cutting or air cutting), and their associated NC codes were identified and recorded at the same time, based on the executing NC block in the CNC controller. An algorithm adopting this state change information to determine effective cutting time and air cutting time was developed and used to build an intelligent air cutting monitoring system, with a friendly human–machine interface. The system can detect air cutting time, effective cutting time, machine idle time, as well as the total machining time to improve the air cutting time to enhance the machining efficiency. Verification experiments were conducted, and the results showed the proposed method can accurately detect the air cutting occurrence and its associated NC blocks in the NC program. Power-efficient digital controllers are proposed for wireless retinal prosthetic systems. Power management plays an important role in reducing the power consumption and avoiding malfunctions in implantable medical devices. In the case of implantable devices with only one-way communication, the received power level is uncertain because there is no feedback on the power status. Accordingly, system breakdown due to inefficient power management should be avoided to prevent harm to patients. In this study, digital power controllers were developed for achieving two-way communication. Three controllers—a forward and back telemetry control unit, a power control unit, and a preamble control unit—operated simultaneously to control the class-E amplifier input power, provided command data to stimulators, monitored the power levels of the implanted devices, and generated back telemetry data. For performance verification, we implemented a digital power control system using a field-programmable gate array and then demonstrated it by employing a wireless telemetry system. Full-duplex (FD) transmission holds a great potential of improving the sum data rate of wireless communication systems. However, the self-interference introduced by the full-duplex transmitter brings a big challenge to enhance the energy efficiency. This paper investigates the power allocation problem in a full-duplex two-way (FDTW) communication network over an OFDM channel, aiming at improving the sum data rate and energy efficiency. We first characterize the sum rate and energy efficiency achieved in a single-carrier FDTW system. The optimal transmit power that achieves the maximal sum data rate is presented. The energy efficiency maximization problem is solved by using fractional programming. Then we further formulate sum rate and energy efficiency maximization problem in a multi-subcarrier FDTW system. In particular, the sub-optimal transmit power allocation which achieves a decent sum rate improvement is found by using a proposed iterative algorithm. By combining the iterative algorithm and fractional programming, we further maximize the energy efficiency of the multi-subcarrier system. With our proposed algorithm, we can easily obtain an optimal transmit power that approximates the global optimal solution. Simulation results show that using the obtained optimal transmit power allocation algorithm can significantly improve the sum rate and energy efficiency in both single-carrier and multi-subcarrier systems. This paper aims to identify and discuss the chances, solutions, and possible drawbacks related to the establishment of safe geotourism sites in subsidence-affected areas, exemplarily applied to the Ghor Al-Haditha sinkhole site at the southeastern shore of the Dead Sea. Such safe areas shall be established in the territory of the proposed future UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) in Jordan. The highlights of the geopark and the basis of its creation are the subsidence features and stream channels found along the SE shoreline of the Dead Sea, which form both a natural hazard and geological heritage of high international significance and have attracted many researchers so far. This recent and ongoing formation is related to the sharp regression of the lake, the specific geomechanical conditions, and the hydrogeologic and climatic background of the surroundings. Nearby communities have suffered in economic terms from these natural phenomena, including flash floods and droughts in this semi-arid to arid region. We here present a concept on how to integrate geoscientific research for hazard monitoring and early warning to maintain safety for inhabitants and visitors on the one hand and reach sustainable economic development through the establishment of geotourism sites on the other hand. This highlight area of the proposed UGGp serves as a starting example for delineating safe zones for walkways and infrastructure. This involves two-way knowledge transfer between spatial planning and hydrogeophysical monitoring, a network of community-supported geophysical surveillance, and regular maintenance and adaptation. The cross-cutting benefits for the territory involve the delineation of safe areas for agriculture and geotourism, the increase of sustainable tourism in the region with a shift towards alternative ways of income, more investment in infrastructure, a growth of international visibility of the region, enhanced environmental education with focus on responsible water usage, and involvement in international research and education projects. Interrelationships between urban and rural areas are fundamental for the development and safeguarding of viable future living conditions and quality of life. These areas are not well-delineated or self-sufficient, and existing interrelations may privilege one over the other. Major urban challenges facing China and Europe are related to changes in climate, environment, and to decision-making that makes urban and rural landscapes more susceptible to environmental pressures. Focusing on the six European and Chinese cities and surrounding rural areas, under study in the joint EC and MOST-funded REGREEN project, we examine how nature-based solutions (NBS) may assist in counteracting these pressures. We explore urban-rural dependencies and partnerships regarding NBS that can enhance resilience in Europe and China. We analyse differences between European and Chinese systems of governance, reflecting on the significance of the scale of research needed to understand how NBS provide benefits. We highlight interactions between differently delineated sheds (watershed, airshed, natureshed, and peopleshed), which influence the interrelationships between urban and rural areas. There may be one-way or two-way interdependence, and the impact may be uni or multi-directional. The European and Chinese solutions, exemplified in this article, tackle the nexus of environmental and peoplesheds. We discuss complex human interactions (and how to model them) that may, or may not, lead to viable and equitable partnerships for implementing NBS in cities within Europe and in China. This paper studies a single-server retrial queue with two types of calls (incoming and outgoing calls). Incoming calls arrive at the server according to a renewal process, and outgoing calls of N − 1 ( N ≥ 2 ) categories occur according to N − 1 independent Poisson processes. Upon arrival, if the server is occupied, an incoming call joins a virtual infinite queue called the orbit, and after an exponentially distributed time in orbit enters the server again, while outgoing calls are lost if the server is busy at the time of their arrivals. Although M/G/1 retrial queues and their variants are extensively studied in the literature, the GI/M/1 retrial queues are less studied due to their complexity. This paper aims to obtain a diffusion limit for the number of calls in orbit when the retrial rate is extremely low. Both policy and research highlight the importance of diverse stakeholder input in urban development processes but visualizing future built environments and creating two-way design communication for non-expert stakeholders are challenging. The present study develops an intuitive and simplified 3D modeling platform that integrates web-based desktop, virtual reality and mobile augmented reality technologies for remote simultaneous urban design collaboration. Through iterative prototyping, based on two series of workshops with stakeholders, the study resulted in such an integrated platform as a minimum viable product as well as specifications for a minimum marketable product to be used in real projects. Recently, companies and consumers of the wine industry have changed their manner of two-way communication, with the rise of technology that introduces social networks and urges the spread of content. In this study, we identified the use and importance of engagement in social networks such as Facebook (2008 to 2018), Instagram (2012 to 2018) and Twitter (2010 to 2018) since the creation of their official accounts for the main Chilean wineries. The methods used involve qualitative and quantitative approaches that integrate the opinion of a panel of experts to estimate a social media engagement indicator through a descriptive statistical analysis and network analysis, from data originated of 70,856 publications. The results show the upward evolution of engagement, calculated through the interactions seen from users of social networks of the wineries, with users of networks of these wineries leaning towards Facebook in the first place, then Instagram, and Twitter. The contribution of this research lies in the generation of empirical evidence that allows the wine industry in a developing country to enhance its competitive advantage through the correct use of its social networks, the management of its engagement, and the diffusion of new marketing strategies. The advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is an architecture for two-way communication between electric, gas and water meters and city utilities. The AMI network is a wireless sensor network that provides communication for metering devices in the neighborhood area of the smart grid. Recently, the applicability of a routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks (RPL) has been considered in AMI networks. Some studies in the literature have pointed out problems with RPL, including sub-optimal path selection and instability. In this paper, we defend the viewpoint that careful planning of the transmission power in wireless RPL networks can significantly reduce the pointed problems. This paper presents a method for planning the transmission power in order to assure that, after convergence, the size of the parent set of the RPL nodes is as close as possible to a predefined size. Stakeholder participation is a foundation of good water governance. Good groundwater governance typically involves the co-production of knowledge about the groundwater system. Models provide a vehicle for producing this knowledge, as well as a "boundary object" around which scientists and stakeholders can convene the co-production process. Through co-production, stakeholders and scientific experts can engage in exchanges that create system knowledge not otherwise achievable. The process involves one-way transfer of information, active two-way conversations, and integration of multiple kinds of knowledge into shared understanding. In the Upper Santa Cruz River basin in Arizona, USA, the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) convened a project aimed at providing scientific underpinnings for groundwater planning and management. This project, entitled Groundwater, Climate, and Stakeholder Engagement, serves as a case study employing the first two stages of knowledge co-production using a hydrological model. Through an iterative process that included two-way communication, stakeholders provided critical input to hydrologic modeling analyses. Acting as a bridging organization, the WRRC facilitated a co-production process, involving location-specific and transferability workshops, which resulted in new knowledge and capacity for applying the model to novel problems. This study explored the association of interpersonal communication style (ICS) with personal and professional growth among Saudi Arabians in the context of the work environment. It was hypothesized that different ICSs are differently associated with personal and professional growth. The participants were 143 Saudi Arabian adults, including members of both genders, who were employed, with varying incomes, and who had different education levels. The participants completed a self-report survey, assessing their ICS and their personal and professional growth in an employment context. Consistent with the hypothesis, the results indicated that different ICSs are differently associated with personal and professional growth. The controlling ICS had the strongest relationship to professional and personal growth, whereas the dynamic ICS had the weakest relationship to professional and personal growth. In the Discussion, we address the limitations of the study and identify several directions for future research, with specific reference to the Saudi Arabian cultural context.

Smart Grids (SGs) expedite secure, large-scale and efficient two-way communication between the power supply and management, but under a sophisticated 5G communication infrastructure, the multi carrier system is the principle system. The high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is one of the significant limitations of the 5G multi carrier (MC) system, as it impedes the efficient design of the 5G analogue front end. Tone reservation (TR) is a highly efficient scheme without signal distortion, which is designed by increasing the freedom in the frequency domain for PAPR reduction. In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based TR (PSO-TR) scheme proceeding with an optimal input power back off-modulation error ratio (IBO-MER) convergence criterion is proposed to improve high power amplifier (HPA) efficiency for OFDM systems. A probabilistic analysis of TR predistribution and freedom in the frequency domain, in relationship with the amplitude of its constituent samples, is carried out. This yields the theoretical framework employed in design of the proposed high computing-enhanced solutions. The proposed PSO-TR essentially make the frequency domain distribution and operation itself adaptive, that is, it adjusts to comply with the changing HPA efficiency and redundant cost during application runtime. For centuries, we have studied these microbes in our surroundings, yet many questions about the evolutionary cross-talk between host and microbe remain unanswered. The Internet of Things (IoT) connects billions of sensors to share and collect data at any time and place. The Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is one of the most important IoT applications. IoT supports AMI to collect data from smart sensors, analyse and measure abnormalities in the energy consumption pattern of sensors. However, two-way communication in distributed sensors is sensitive and tends towards security and privacy issues. Before deploying distributed sensors, data confidentiality and privacy and message authentication for sensor devices and control messages are the major security requirements. Several authentications and encryption protocols have been developed to provide confidentiality and integrity. However, many sensors in distributed systems, resource constraint smart sensors, and adaptability of IoT communication protocols in sensors necessitate designing an efficient and lightweight security authentication scheme. This paper proposes a Payload Encryption-based Optimisation Scheme for lightweight authentication (PEOS) on distributed sensors. The PEOS integrates and optimises important features of Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) in Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) architecture instead of implementing the DTLS in a separate channel. The proposed work designs a payload encryption scheme and an Optimised Advanced Encryption Standard (OP-AES). The PEOS modifies the DTLS handshaking and retransmission processes in PEOS using payload encryption and NACK messages, respectively. It also removes the duplicate features of the protocol version and sequence number without impacting the performance of CoAP. Moreover, the PEOS attempts to improve the CoAP over distributed sensors in the aspect of optimised AES operations, such as parallel execution of S-boxes in SubBytes and delayed Mixcolumns. The efficiency of PEOS authentication is evaluated on Conitki OS using the Cooja simulator for lightweight security and authentication. The proposed scheme attains better throughput while minimising the message size overhead by 9% and 23% than the existing payload-based mutual authentication PbMA and basic DTLS/CoAP scheme in random network topologies with less than 50 nodes. (1) Shared decision making (SDM) has been advocated as a way of improving prudency in healthcare and has been linked to self-efficacy and empowerment of service users. The evaluation of its use in musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy has been vague, but articles suggest that trust and communication are integral. (2) ENTREQ guidelines informed this systematic review and thematic synthesis. PRISMA recommendations steered a systematic literature search of AHMED, CINAHL, MEDLNE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases from inception to September 2021. COREQ was used for quality appraisal of articles alongside critical discussions. Analysis and synthesis included five stages: outlining study characteristics, coding of data, development of descriptive themes, development of analytical themes and integration and refinement. The review aim was to explore people's experiences of SDM in MSK physiotherapy and to inform our understanding of the conditions needed for successful SDM. (3) Out of 1508 studies, 9 articles were included. Four main themes (trust, communication, decision preferences and decision ability) demonstrated that the majority of people want to participate in decision-making. As described in the capacity and capability model, three core conditions were needed to facilitate someone's' ability to participate. (4) People want to be involved in SDM in MSK physiotherapy. The liberalization of the gas market has deeply affected the structure of the gas system. The change from a vertically integrated utility structure to a liberalized architecture has resulted in a new network asset where aggregators could play a key role. To enable aggregators' functionalities, the gas system has moved to a smart configuration. The development of this Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) allowing a two-way communication between the utility and the consumers, together with demand response programs, prove to be an advantageous solution. Utilities are allowed to manage consumers' gas load by asking them to reduce or shift their gas usage so that rebates or back payments could be available for consumers. In this framework, aimed at ensuring the feasibility of the gas system and promoting the aggregation of small gas loads, a new agent has been identified. In this research, the potential of district heating systems as gas market aggregators, together with a novel architecture for the gas network system has been identified. Furthermore, DR benefits in natural gas systems have been assessed with a focus on the Italian peninsula, where the authors have already carried out a previous analysis in this regard. A significant part of our cultural heritage consists of wood. Research on historical wooden structures and artefacts thereby provides knowledge of people's daily lives and the society in which they lived. Dendrochronology is a well-established dating method of wood that can also provide valuable knowledge about climate dynamics, environmental changes, silviculture, and cultural transformations. However, dendrochronology comes with some limitations that end users in cultural heritage sciences must be aware of, otherwise their surveys may not be ultimately performed. We have drawn attention to studies in which dendrochronological results have been misinterpreted, over-interpreted, or not fully utilized. On the other hand, a rigorous dendrochronological survey may not respond to the request of information in practice. To bridge this rigour-relevance gap, this article has considered and reviewed both the dendrochronology's science-perspective and the practitioner's and end user's call for context appropriate studies. The material for this study consists of (i) interviews with researchers in dendrochronology and end users represented by cultural heritage researchers with focus on building conservation and building history in Sweden, and (ii) a review of dendrochronological reports and the literature where results from the reports have been interpreted. From these sources we can conclude that a continuous two-way communication between the dendrochronologists and end users often would have resulted in improved cultural heritage studies. The communication can take place in several steps. Firstly, the design of a sampling plan, which according to the current standard for sampling of cultural materials often is required, is an excellent common starting point for communication. Secondly, the survey reports could be developed with a more extensive general outline of the method and guidance in how to interpret the results. Thirdly, the potential contribution from dendrochronology is often underused, foreseeing historical information on local climate, silviculture, and choice of quality of the wooden resource, as the focus most often is the chronological dating. This article presents the development of a platform for real-time monitoring of multi-microgrids. A small-scale platform has been developed and implemented as a prototype, which takes data from various types of devices located at a distance from each other. The monitoring platform is interoperable, as it allows several protocols to coexist. While the developed prototype is tested on small-scale distributed energy resources (DERs), it is done in a way to extend the concept for monitoring several microgrids in real scales. Monitoring strategies were developed for DERs by making a customized two-way communication channel between the microgrids and the monitoring center using a long-range bridged wireless local area network (WLAN). In addition, an informative and easy-to-use software dashboard was developed. The dashboard shows real-time information and measurements from the DERs—providing the user with a holistic view of the status of the DERs. The proposed system is scalable, modular, facilitates the interoperability of various types of inverters, and communicates data over a secure communication channel. An ultra-wideband (UWB) localization system is an alternative in a GPS-denied environment. However, a distance measurement with UWB modules using a two-way communication protocol induces an orientation-dependent error. Previous research studied this error by looking at parameters such as the received power and the channel response signal. In this paper, the neural network (NN) method for correcting the orientation-induced distance error without the need to calculate the signal strength, obtain the channel response or know any parameters of the antenna and the UWB modules is presented. The NN method utilizes only the measured distance and the tag orientation, and implements an NN model obtained by machine learning, using measurements at different distances and orientations of the two UWB modules. The verification of the experimental setup with 12 anchors and a tag shows that with the proposed NN method, 5 cm better root mean square error values (RMSEs) are obtained for the measured distance between the anchors and the tag compared to the calibration method that did not include orientation information. With the least-square estimator, 14 cm RMSE in 3D is obtained with the NN model corrected distances, with a 9 cm improvement compared to when raw distances are used. The method produces better results without the need to obtain the UWB module's diagnostics parameters that are required to calculate the received signal strength or channel response, and in this way maintain the minimum packet size for the ranging protocol. A successful e-participation campaign in urban planning relies on good two-way communication between the expert and the citizen. While the presentation of information from planners to citizens is one concern of that topic, we address in this paper the question of how citizens' inputs can be evaluated for map-based e-participation tools. The interest is, on the one side, in the usefulness of the input for the planner and, on the other side, in performing a quick assessment which can provide feedback to the participant via the tool's interface. We use a test dataset that was acquired with an online city planning tool that uses 3D geometries and develop analysis methods from it that can also be generalized for other map-based e-participation tools. These analysis methods are meant to be applied to large datasets and to enhance e-participation methods in urban planning and design to citizen (design) science approaches. The methods range from the calculation of simple parameters and heatmaps over clustering to point pattern analysis. We evaluate the presented approaches by their computation time and their usefulness for the planner and non-expert citizen and investigate their potential to serve as a composite analysis. We found that functions of the point pattern analysis reveal relevant information of the users' inputs but require a simplified presentation. We consider a man-in-the-middle attack on two-way quantum key distribution ping-pong and LM05 protocols in which an eavesdropper copies all messages in the message mode, while being undetectable in the mode. Under the attack there is therefore no disturbance in the message mode and the mutual information between the sender and the receiver is always constant and equal to one and messages copied by the eavesdropper are always genuine. An attack can only be detected in the control mode but the level of detection at which the protocol should be aborted is not defined. We examine steps of the protocol to evaluate its security and find that the protocol should be redesigned. We also compare it with the security of a one-way asymmetric BB84-like protocol in which one basis serves as the message mode and the other as the control mode but which does have the level of detection at which the protocol should be aborted defined. Registered nurses (RNs) working within acute care hospitals have an incredible responsibility to provide safe care in a complex environment which requires trust, teamwork, and communication. Nursing assistants (NAs) play a critical role in working with RNs to meet these growing demands of inpatient care. Minimal evidence exists exploring the relational quality between RNs and NAs within hospitals. The aim of this study is to explore RN and NA behaviors and experiences that promote patient safety and teamwork and enhance communication between RNs and NAs within the hospital environment. Qualitative analysis was used, with two focus groups which included six participants within each group (three RNs and three NAs) from two separate inpatient units. Transcripts were reviewed and coded for themes. Collaborative teamwork and two-way communication were commonly reported as behaviors that promote patient safety. Trust between RNs and NAs was identified as a key component of positive relationships between RNs and NAs. Participants identified four common behaviors that build trust, which were accountability, effective conflict resolution, collaborative teamwork, and prioritizing patient needs. Finally, teamwork was identified as a common strategy to increase communication effectiveness between RNs and NAs. The intestinal microbiome, the largest reservoir of microorganisms in the human body, plays an important role in neurological development and aging as well as in brain disorders such as an ischemic stroke. Increasing knowledge about mediators and triggered pathways has contributed to a better understanding of the interaction between the gut-brain axis and the brain-gut axis. Intestinal bacteria produce neuroactive compounds and can modulate neuronal function, which affects behavior after an ischemic stroke. In addition, intestinal microorganisms affect host metabolism and immune status, which in turn affects the neuronal network in the ischemic brain. Here we discuss the latest results of animal and human research on two-way communication along the gut-brain axis in an ischemic stroke. Moreover, several reports have revealed the impact of an ischemic stroke on gut dysfunction and intestinal dysbiosis, highlighting the delicate play between the brain, intestines and microbiome after this acute brain injury. Despite our growing knowledge of intestinal microflora in shaping brain health, host metabolism, the immune system and disease progression, its therapeutic options in an ischemic stroke have not yet been fully utilized. This review shows the role of the gut microflora-brain axis in an ischemic stroke and assesses the potential role of intestinal microflora in the onset, progression and recovery post-stroke. Observing calves at birth may help to identify risk factors for, and reduce, calf loss in extensive beef systems. The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate two commercial satellite birth alert systems to enable the observation of newborn calves and (2) assess behavioral changes of cows around calving. Vaginal Implant Transmitters (VIT) paired with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) collars were worn by 20 cows in Trial 1 and 10 cows in Trial 2 to identify birthing events. The VIT and GNSS collars contained a temperature sensor, accelerometer, and very high frequency (VHF) to communicate with a handheld tracker, and ultra-high frequency (UHF) for communication between the VIT and GNSS collar, which had two-way communication using Iridium satellites. A change (Brand 1) or drop (Brand 2) in temperature of more than 3 °C and inactivity triggered the VIT to communicate an expelled alert to the collar, which transmitted the birth alert information via Iridium (device ID, date, time and geolocation of the GNSS collar at expulsion). Cows and calves were tracked in the paddock following a birth alert to assess their health and status. Overall, true birth alerts occurred in only 27.6% of devices. Cows remained active on the day of calving travelling 5.54 ± 4.11 and 5.00 ± 2.80 km/day compared to 6.45 ± 2.79 and 6.12 ± 2.30 km/d on days when calving did not occur for Trial 1 and 2, respectively (mean ± SD). Average activity of the accelerometer X- and Y-axis on calving day was reduced by 15%–20% compared to other days in Trial 1 (p < 0.05) but not in Trial 2 (p > 0.05). Results suggest that these two birth alert systems are not suitable for use in extensive systems and the further development of the technology is required. Cows in the current trials remained active on the day of, and after, calving, indicating that a faster, real-time alert system and communication protocol would be required to achieve the aim of finding newborn calves. This paper presents a stochastic inference problem suited to a classification approach in a time-varying observation model with continuous-valued unknown parameterization. The utilization of an artificial neural network (ANN)-based classifier is considered, and the concept of a training process via the backpropagation algorithm is used. The main objective is the minimization of resources required for the training of the classifier in the parametric observation model. To reach this, it is proposed that the weights of the ANN classifier vary continuously with the change of the observation model parameters. This behavior is then used in an update-based backpropagation algorithm. This proposed idea is demonstrated on several procedures, which re-use previously trained weights as prior information when updating the classifier after a channel phase change. This approach successfully saves resources needed for re-training the ANN. This paper presents a dual-function wearable device (Tacsac) with capacitive tactile sensing and integrated tactile feedback capability to enable communication among deafblind people. Tacsac has a skin contactor which enhances localized vibrotactile stimulation of the skin as a means of feedback to the user. It comprises two main modules—the touch-sensing module and the vibrotactile module; both stacked and integrated as a single device. The vibrotactile module is an electromagnetic actuator that employs a flexible coil and a permanent magnet assembled in soft poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), while the touch-sensing module is a planar capacitive metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure. The flexible coil was fabricated on a 50 µm polyimide (PI) sheet using Lithographie Galvanoformung Abformung (LIGA) micromoulding technique. The Tacsac device has been tested for independent sensing and actuation as well as dual sensing-actuation mode. The measured vibration profiles of the actuator showed a synchronous response to external stimulus for a wide range of frequencies (10 Hz to 200 Hz) within the perceivable tactile frequency thresholds of the human hand. The resonance vibration frequency of the actuator is in the range of 60–70 Hz with an observed maximum off-plane displacement of 0.377 mm at coil current of 180 mA. The capacitive touch-sensitive layer was able to respond to touch with minimal noise both when actuator vibration is ON and OFF. A mobile application was also developed to demonstrate the application of Tacsac for communication between deafblind person wearing the device and a mobile phone user who is not deafblind. This advances existing tactile displays by providing efficient two-way communication through the use of a single device for both localized haptic feedback and touch-sensing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
