Background and Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic originated in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, the first case diagnosed since January 2020 in Taiwan. The study about the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on event, location, food source, and pathogens of foodborne disease (FBD) is limited in Taiwan. Our aim in this study is to investigate FBD in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: We collected publicly available annual summary data from the FBD dataset in the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration and Certifiable Disease on reported FBD in Taiwan from 2019 to 2020. We used logistic regression to evaluate changes in the occurrence or likelihood of FBD cases and Poisson regression to examine the relative risk (RR) between FBD and climate factors. Results: Similar events occurred in 2019 and 2020, but the total number of FBD cases decreased from 6935 in 2019 to 4920 in 2020. The places where FBD decreased were in schools, hospitals, outdoors, vendors, and exteriors. The top place in FBD shifted from schools to restaurants. The top food source for FBD has changed from boxed food to compound food. Bacillus cereus and Salmonella emerged as the top two observed bacterial pathogens causing FBD. The risk of FBD cases increased with a higher air temperature, with an RR of 1.055 (1.05–1.061, p < 0.001) every 1 °C. Conclusion: The incidence of FBD decreased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan. This decline may be attributed to protective measures implemented to control the spread of the virus. This shift in locations could be influenced by changes in public behavior, regulations, or other external factors. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding the sources and effectiveness of severe infection prevention policies. The government can use these findings to formulate evidence-based policies aimed at reducing FBD cases and promoting public health. (1) Background: An asthma exacerbation that is not relieved with medication typically requires an emergency room visit (ERV). The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic began in Taiwan in January of 2020. The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric ERVs in Taiwan was limited. Our aim was to survey pediatric asthma ERVs in the COVID-19 era; (2) Methods: Data were collected from the health quality database of the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Administration from 2019 to 2021. Air pollution and climatic factors in Taipei were used to evaluate these relationships. Changes in the rates of pediatric asthma ERVs were assessed using logistic regression analysis. Poisson regression was used to evaluate the impact of air pollution and climate change; (3) Results: The rate of pediatric asthma ERVs declined in different areas and at different hospital levels including medical centers, regional and local hospitals. Some air pollutants (particulate matter ≤ 2.5 µm, particulate matter ≤ 10 µm, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide) reduced during the COVID-19 lockdown. Ozone increased the relative risk (RR) of pediatric asthma ERVs during the COVID-19 period by 1.094 (95% CI: 1.095–1.12) per 1 ppb increase; (4) Conclusions: The rate of pediatric asthma ERVs declined during the COVID-19 pandemic and ozone has harmful effects. Background and Objectives: Hearing loss after septicemia has been found in mice; the long-term risk increased 50-fold in young adults in a previous study. Hearing loss after septicemia has not received much attention. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between septicemia and subsequent hearing loss. Materials and Methods: Inpatient data were obtained from the Taiwan Insurance Database. We defined patients with sensorineural hearing loss and excluded patients under 18 years of age. Patients without hearing loss were selected as controls at a frequency of 1:5. The date of admission was defined as the date of diagnosis. Comorbidities in the 3 years preceding the date of diagnosis were retrieved retrospectively. Associations with hearing loss were established by multiple logistic regression and forward stepwise selection. Results: The odds ratio (OR) for the association between sepsis and hearing loss was 3.052 (95% CI: 1.583–5.884). Autoimmune disease (OR: 5.828 (95% CI: 1.906–17.816)), brain injury (OR: 2.264 (95% CI: 1.212–4.229)) and ischemic stroke (OR: 1.47 (95% CI: 1.087–1.988)) were associated with hearing loss. Conclusions: Our study shows that hearing loss occurred after septicemia. Apoptosis caused by sepsis and ischemia can lead to hair cell damage, leading to hearing loss. Clinicians should be aware of possible subsequent complications of septicemia and provide appropriate treatment and prevention strategies for complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By collecting the magnetic field information of each spatial point, we can build a magnetic field fingerprint map. When the user is positioning, the magnetic field measured by the sensor is matched with the magnetic field fingerprint map to identify the user's location. However, since the magnetic field is easily affected by external magnetic fields and magnetic storms, which can lead to "local temporal-spatial variation", it is difficult to construct a stable and accurate magnetic field fingerprint map for indoor positioning. This research proposes a new magnetic indoor positioning method, which combines a magnetic sensor array composed of three magnetic sensors and a recurrent probabilistic neural network (RPNN) to realize a high-precision indoor positioning system. The magnetic sensor array can detect subtle magnetic anomalies and spatial variations to improve the stability and accuracy of magnetic field fingerprint maps, and the RPNN model is built for recognizing magnetic field fingerprint. We implement an embedded magnetic sensor array positioning system, which is evaluated in an experimental environment. Our method can reduce the noise caused by the spatial-temporal variation of the magnetic field, thus greatly improving the indoor positioning accuracy, reaching an average positioning accuracy of 0.78 m. In the application of video surveillance, reliable people detection and tracking are always challenging tasks. The conventional single-camera surveillance system may encounter difficulties such as narrow-angle of view and dead space. In this paper, we proposed multi-cameras network architecture with an inter-camera hand-off protocol for cooperative people tracking. We use the YOLO model to detect multiple people in the video scene and incorporate the particle swarm optimization algorithm to track the person movement. When a person leaves the area covered by a camera and enters an area covered by another camera, these cameras can exchange relevant information for uninterrupted tracking. The motion smoothness (MS) metrics is proposed for evaluating the tracking quality of multi-camera networking system. We used a three-camera system for two persons tracking in overlapping scene for experimental evaluation. Most tracking person offsets at different frames were lower than 30 pixels. Only 0.15% of the frames showed abrupt increases in offsets pixel. The experiment results reveal that our multi-camera system achieves robust, smooth tracking performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OFDM in 5G wireless communication networks has the advantages of a high transmission volume and data rate. However, the problem of a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM signals may lead to serious performance degradation and distortion in the high-power amplifier at the transmitter. In this paper, with the clipping process, the self-adjustment gain (SAG) method is proposed, to tune up the positions of the clipped signals, for reducing the PAPR of OFDM signals without increasing the error probability. The distance between the estimated and clipped signal points in the signal space is measured. An updated process is developed to produce the new signal points based on the measured distance and the self-adjustment gain that is obtained from the clipping noise power and measurement power. The simulation results show that for QPSK/OFDM, SAG reduces up to 2 dB and 0.7 dB more PAPR than ACE with one and three iterations, respectively. For 16QAM/OFDM, SAG reduces up to 1.3 dB and 0.5 dB more PAPR than ACE with one and three iterations, respectively. SAG also outperforms the active constellation extension, with the projection onto convex sets (ACE-POCS) and gradient project (SGP) methods in first two iterations. Hence, the proposed method really reduces the PAPR value more effectively, within an acceptable error probability, and its computational complexity is also much lower in comparison with those methods based on the active constellation extension (ACE) with iterations. The nervous system is a significant part of the human body, and peripheral nerve injury caused by trauma can cause various functional disorders. When the broken end defect is large and cannot be repaired by direct suture, small gap sutures of nerve conduits can effectively replace nerve transplantation and avoid the side effect of donor area disorders. There are many choices for nerve conduits, and natural materials and synthetic polymers have their advantages. Among them, the nerve scaffold should meet the requirements of good degradability, biocompatibility, promoting axon growth, supporting axon expansion and regeneration, and higher cell adhesion. Polymer biological scaffolds can change some shortcomings of raw materials by using electrospinning filling technology and surface modification technology to make them more suitable for nerve regeneration. Therefore, polymer scaffolds have a substantial prospect in the field of biomedicine in future. This paper reviews the application of nerve conduits in the field of repairing peripheral nerve injury, and we discuss the latest progress of materials and fabrication techniques of these polymer scaffolds. Colitis-associated cancer (CAC) is a malignant disease of the colon that is caused by recurrent episodes of chronic intestinal inflammation. Huangqi Baizhu decoction (HBD) is a classic prescription comprised of Radix Astragali and Rhizoma Atractylodis , which are usually used to treat digestive conditions, such as peptic ulcers, colitis, or colorectal carcinoma in clinics. HBD is well known for "tonifying qi and spleen" based on the theories of traditional Chinese medicine, and has the preponderant effect of alleviating chronic intestinal mucosa damage associated with disease. However, the underlying mechanism behind this is still unknown. In the current study, we employed the AOM/DSS mouse model to analyze the effects of HBD on the development of inflammation in colonic carcinoma. The in vivo study showed that HBD could significantly reduce the mortality of mice and control the incidence and size of colonic tumors by inhibiting the IL-6/STAT3 signaling pathway. In vitro, Astragaloside and Atractylenolide (CAA), the main components of HBD, inhibited the proliferation of HCT-116 cells as determined by an MTT assay. Furthermore, CAA notably suppressed the protein expression of IL-6R, STAT3, Survivin, and Cyclin D1 induced by IL-6 in HCT-116 and RAW264.7 cells. These results suggested that HBD exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative effects, inhibiting the development of CAC in mice.

Cajanolactone A (CLA) is a stilbenoid discovered by us from Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. In our study, CLA was found to promote osteoblast differentiation in human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs), as judged by increased cellular alkaline phosphatase activity and extracellular calcium deposits, and elevated protein expression of Runx2, collagen-1, bone morphogenetic protein-2, and osteopontin. Mechanistic studies revealed that hBMSCs undergoing osteoblast differentiation expressed upregulated mRNA levels of Wnt3a , Wnt10b , LRP5/6 , Frizzled 4 , β-catenin , Runx2 , and Osterix from the early stage of differentiation, indicating the role of activated Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in osteoblast differentiation. Addition of CLA to the differentiation medium further increased the mRNA level of Wnt3a , Wnt10b , Frizzled 4 , LRP5 , and β-catenin , inferring that CLA worked by stimulating Wnt/LRP5/β-catenin signaling. Wnt inhibitor dickkopf-1 antagonized CLA-promoted osteoblastogenesis, indicating that CLA did not target the downstream of canonical Wnt signaling pathway. Treatment with CLA caused no changes in mRNA expression level, as well as protein secretion of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), indicating that CLA did not affect the OPG/RANKL axis. Our results showed that CLA, which promoted osteoblast differentiation in hBMSCs, through activating Wnt/LRP5/β-catenin signaling transduction, is a promising anti-osteoporotic drug candidate.

A new natural halogen-containing stilbene derivative was isolated from the leaves of Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. and identified as 3-O-(3-chloro-2-hydroxyl-propanyl)-longistylin A by comprehensive spectroscopic and chemical analysis, and named cajanstilbene H (1). It is the first halogen-containing stilbene derivative found from plants. In human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) from bone marrow, 1 did not promote cell proliferation, but distinctly enhanced osteogenic differentiation of hMSC in time- and dose-dependent manners. In six human cancer cell lines, 1 showed a moderate inhibitory effect on cell proliferation, with IC50 values of 21.42-25.85 μmol·L(-1).

A series of N-3-substituted 7-aminopyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-6-carbonitrile derivatives was readily synthesized and their anti-proliferative activities on five types of tumor cells were evaluated through a cell-based phenotypic screening approach. Compound 3k was found to be potent on human colon cancer SW620 cells with an IC(50) value of 12.5 mM. Structural optimization of compound 3k led to compound 4a with improved anti-proliferative potency on SW620 cells with an IC(50) value of 6.9 mM. Further cell-cycle analyses suggested that compound 4a induced apoptosis of SW620 cells in a concentration-dependent manner.

A novel series of 2-(3-fluoro-4-nitrophenoxy)-N-phenylacetamide compounds were designed, synthesized and in vitro assessed for their antitubercular activities by a microdilution method. All the novel derivatives exerted potent or moderate active against M. tuberculosis H₃₇Rv, with MIC values ranging from 4 to 64 μg/mL. The most potent derivative 3m showed an identical MIC value of 4 μg/mL for both M. tuberculosis H₃₇Rv and rifampin-resistant M. tuberculosis 261. It demonstrated no inhibitory effects against six different tumor cell lines by a MTT assay and had a good safety profile in a vero cell line, providing a good lead for subsequent optimization in search of novel affordable antitubercular agents.
