Carbon dots (CDs), as a revolutionary nanomaterial, exhibit unique advantages in terms of wastewater treatment, offering new opportunities for the development of water treatment technologies due to their simple synthesis methods, excellent biocompatibility, tunable optical properties, and favorable environmental performance. This review systematically discusses the synthesis methods, structural characteristics, and application progress of carbon dots in wastewater treatment, highlighting several key findings. (1) Excellent adsorption performance: CDs can effectively remove heavy metal ions, dyes, and organic pollutants from water. (2) Outstanding photocatalytic performance: Some carbon-dot-enhanced photocatalytic systems can efficiently remove pollutants under visible light. (3) Exceptional selective detection ability: CDs are capable of highly sensitive detection of heavy metals and organic pollutants in water, with the detection limits reaching the nanomolar level. (4) Enhanced membrane separation performance: The high water flux and excellent selectivity of carbon-dot-modified membranes make them suitable for efficient water treatment and water quality separation. (5) Enhancement of biological treatment: In biological treatment systems, CDs can significantly improve the microbial activity and electron transfer efficiency to enhance the efficiency of biological degradation processes. (6) Sustainable utilization of waste as a raw material and regeneration of CDs are conducive to reducing the cost of preparation of CDs. These findings indicate that CDs have broad application potential in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, this review looks ahead to the future development directions of CDs in wastewater treatment, proposing potential innovations in catalytic performance enhancement, cost control, and practical applications, aiming to provide important references and guidance for future research and industrial application of CDs in wastewater treatment. With the widespread use of plastic products, microplastic (MP) pollution has become an important factor threatening the water environment and human health. Ultrafiltration (UF) technology, based on organic polymer membranes, is a common method to remove MPs in water treatment processes, offering high removal efficiency and scalability. However, in water treatment plants (WTPs), oxidation pretreatment is often applied before UF, and the presence of oxidants can affect membrane performance. In this study, we constructed a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane for a gravity filtration system to investigate the impact of sodium hypochlorite oxidation pretreatment on the removal of polystyrene (PS) MPs under gravity filtration. As a result, pre-chlorination reduced PS microplastic deposition on membranes by improving flux stability (15.1%) but significantly decreased the removal rate (from 36.6% to 22.6%). Pre-oxidation facilitated a shift in fouling behavior toward intermediate blocking while reducing standard blocking and enhancing irreversible fouling recovery. However, continuous chlorine exposure increased membrane porosity and pore size, substituted fluorine with chlorine, and led to organic carbon leaching, indicating pre-oxidation jeopardizes membrane stability and separation performance. The scope of this work was to develop a thin-film composite (TFC) membrane for the separation of CO2/CO mixtures, which are relevant for many processes of gas processing and gasification of carbon-based feedstock. Special attention was given to the development of highly permeable porous polysulfone (PSF) supports (more than 26,000 GPU for CO2) since both the selective and support layers contribute significantly to the overall performance of the TFC membrane. The PSF porous support is widely used in commercial and lab-scale TFC membranes, and its porous structure and other exploitation parameters are set during the non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process. Since the casting solution properties (e.g., viscosity) and the interactions in a three-component system (polymer, solvent, and non-solvent) play noticeable roles in the NIPS process, polysulfone samples in a wide range of molecular weights (Mw = 76,000–122,000 g·mol−1) with terminal hydroxyl groups were synthesized for the first time. Commercial PSF with predominantly terminal chlorine groups (Ultrason® S 6010) was used as a reference. The PSF samples were characterized by NMR, DSC, and TGA methods, and the Hansen solubility parameters were calculated. It was found that increasing the ratio of terminal –OH over –Cl groups improved the "solubility" of PSF in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and water. A direct dependence of the gas permeance of porous supports on the coagulation rate of the casting solution was identified for the first time. It was shown that the use of synthesized PSF (Mw = 76,000 g·mol−1, Mw/Mn = 3.0, (–OH):(–Cl) ratio of 4.7:1) enabled a porous support with a CO2 permeance of 26,700 GPU to be obtained, while the support formed from a commercial PSF Ultrason® S 6010 (Mw = 68,000 g·mol−1, Mw/Mn = 1.7, (–OH):(–Cl) ratio of 1:1.9) under the same conditions demonstrated 4300 GPU. The siloxane-based materials were used for the selective layer since the thin films based on rubbery polymers do not undergo the same accelerating physical aging as glassy polymers. Two types of materials were screened for the selective layer: synthesized polymethyltrifluoroethylacrylate siloxane-polydecylmethylsiloxane (50F3) copolymer, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). 50F3 siloxane was studied for gas separation applications for the first time. It was shown that the permeance of composite membranes based on high-performance porous supports from the PSF samples synthesized was 3.5 times higher than that from similar composite membranes based on supports from a commercial Ultrason® S 6010 PSF with a permeance value of 4300 GPU for CO2. It was found that the enhanced gas permeance of composite membranes based on the highly permeable porous PSF supports developed was observed for both 50F3 polysiloxane and commercial PDMS. At the same time, the CO2/CO selectivity of the composite membranes with a 50F3-selective layer (9.1–9.3) is 1.5 times higher than that of composite membranes with a PDMS-selective layer. The production of hydrogen via dark fermentation generates carbon dioxide, which needs to be separated and re-utilized to minimize the environmental impact. This research investigates the potential of utilizing algae for carbon dioxide sequestration in hydrogen production via dark fermentation. However, algae alone cannot fully use all the carbon dioxide produced, necessitating the implementation of a multistage separation process. This study proposes a purification approach that integrates membrane separation with a photobioreactor in a multistage design layout. Mathematical models were used to simulate the performance efficiency of multistage design layout using MATLAB 2015b (Version 9.3). A detailed parametric analysis and the key parameters influencing the separation efficiency were conducted for each stage. This study explores how reactor geometry, operational dynamics (such as gas transfer rates and light availability), and algae growth impact both CO2 removal and hydrogen purity. An optimization strategy was used to obtain the set of optimal operating and design parameters. Our results have shown a significant improvement in hydrogen purity, increasing from 55% to 99% using this multistage separation process, while CO2 removal efficiency rose from 35% to 85% over a week. This study highlights the potential of combining membrane technology with photobioreactors to enhance hydrogen purification, offering a more sustainable and efficient solution for hydrogen production. Due to imbalanced demand favoring egg whites, the egg industry faces a surplus of egg yolk, limiting overall growth. This study designed a feasible process for the crude extraction of livetins and phosvitin (PV) and revealed the related separation mechanisms. Our method utilized a 1:9 egg yolk dilution at pH 6.15–6.29, incubated at 4–7.5 °C, to reduce the dispersibility of lipoproteins in the water-soluble fraction (WSF). Adding 0.04–0.05% (w/v) sodium alginate to WSF at pH 5.40 effectively removed suspended low-density lipoprotein (LDL) through electrostatic complexation, increasing livetins electrophoretic bands from 51.90% to 91.04%. The dispersion of the high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-PV complex was jointly affected by NaCl and pH, with phosphocalcic bridges fully disrupted when NaCl concentration exceeded 7.5% (w/v). Na+ and Ca2+ were adsorbed onto the negatively charged protein surface at pH 5–8, inducing strong hydration repulsion, thereby resulting in the individual dispersion of HDL and PV. Based on the solubility difference in low ionic strength solutions at neutral pH, HDL could be effectively removed after dialysis, increasing PV electrophoretic bands from 8.45% to 61.50%. Novel multicomponent Nb–Ni–Ti–Zr–Co alloys with 20–55 at.% Nb were synthesized from metal powders by arc melting. The resulting alloys consist primarily of Nb-rich and eutectic body-centered (BCC) phases. The content of the eutectic BCC phase is highest for an equimolar composition, while the content of the Nb-rich BCC phase increases with Nb content in the alloy. The content of secondary phases is the highest for the alloy with 32 at.% Nb. According to ab initio calculations, hydrogen occupies tetrahedral interstitial sites in the Nb-rich phase and octahedral sites in the eutectic BCC phase. For different Nb concentrations, hydrogen-binding energies were calculated. An increase in the Nb-rich phase leads to softening of multicomponent alloys. The alloys with 20 and 32 at.% Nb demonstrate high hydrogen permeability (1.05 and 0.96 × 10−8 molH2m−1s−1Pa−0.5, respectively) at 400 °C, making them promising for hydrogen purification membrane application. In this study, the integration of a 3D printed turbulence promoter into a stirred membrane separation cell during dairy wastewater ultrafiltration was investigated. Its effects, along with the effects of stirring, on the permeate flux and membrane fouling were examined. The experiments were carried out at different transmembrane pressures (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 MPa) and stirring speeds (RPM: 100–400 min−1), both with and without the application of the turbulence promoter. Various parameters were employed to characterize the membrane performance, such as the permeate flux, the flux decline ratio, and the fouling coefficient. To further investigate the membrane fouling mechanisms, mathematical models were used: the resistance-in-series model, the Makardij model, and the Hermia model. With the resistance-in-series model, we examined whether the membrane fouling was reversible (the deposit could be easily removed by washing operations) or irreversible (irreversible fouling) for each measurement, and with the Makardij model, we investigated whether the rate constant of the fouling or the rate constant of the deposit removal was the most important. In the case of the Hermia model, changes in the cake filtration rate constant were monitored. The results indicate that the combination of the 3D printed turbulence promoter and the stirring speed could effectively reduce membrane fouling during dairy wastewater ultrafiltration. The theory of electrolyte solution provides a precise description of the thermodynamic state and non-ideality of electrolyte solutions, allowing for the accurate prediction of the crystallization separation process of Salt Lake brine. Analogously, we attempt to describe the non-ideality of ions in ion-exchange polymers based on Manning's Counterion Condensation Theory, which was originally used to describe the thermodynamics of polyelectrolyte solutions, has amply proven the potential to extend to ion-exchange polymers. In this article, equilibrium solvent and solute concentrations in aminated cross-linked polystyrene AEM were determined experimentally as a function of external NaCl concentration, and ion activity coefficients in the membranes were obtained via a thermodynamic treatment. With the recombination and empirical parameters added to Manning's model, the ion activity coefficient of NaCl and NaBr in the aminated cross-linked polystyrene AEM can be accurately described in concentration ranges of 0.01 mol·kg−1~3 mol·kg−1. Compared with the original model, the Coefficient of Determination between the improved model and the experimental data was increased from 0.65 to 0.95. The Residual Sum of Squares is reduced by about one order of magnitude, significantly improving the Manning model's adaptability when applied to AEM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA) are widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance image contrast by interacting with water molecules, thus improving diagnostic capabilities. However, understanding the residual accumulation of GBCA in tissues after administration remains an area of active research. This highlights the need for advanced analytical techniques capable of investigating interactions between GBCAs and biopolymers, such as type I collagen, which are abundant in the body. Objective: This study explores the interactions of neutral and charged GBCAs with type I collagen under physiological pH conditions (pH 7.4) using Taylor dispersion analysis (TDA) and frontal analysis continuous capillary electrophoresis (FACCE). Methods: Collagen from bovine achilles tendon was ground using a vibratory ball mill to achieve a more uniform particle size and increased surface area. Laser granulometry was employed to characterize the size distributions of both raw and ground collagen suspensions in water. TDA was used to assess the hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of the soluble collagen fraction present in the supernatant. Results: From the TDA and FACCE results, it was shown that there were no significant interactions between the tested GBCAs and either the ground collagen or its soluble fraction at pH 7.4. Interestingly, we also observed that collagen interacts with filtration membranes, indicating that careful selection of membrane material, or the absence of filtration in the experimental protocol, is essential in interaction studies involving collagen. Due to their antibacterial and antifungal properties, parabens are commonly used as biocides and preservatives in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Parabens have been reported to exist in various water matrices at low concentrations, which renders the need for sample preparation before their quantification using analytical techniques. Thus, sample preparation methods such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), rotating-disk sorptive extraction (RDSE), and vortex-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid extraction (VA-DLLE) that are commonly used for parabens extraction and preconcentration have been discussed. As a result of sample preparation methods, analytical techniques now detect parabens at trace levels ranging from µg/L to ng/L. These compounds have been detected in water, air, soil, and human tissues. While the full impact of parabens on human health and ecosystems is still being debated in the scientific community, it is widely recognized that parabens can act as endocrine disruptors. Furthermore, some studies have suggested that parabens may have carcinogenic effects. The presence of parabens in the environment is primarily due to wastewater discharges, which result in widespread contamination and their concentrations increased during the COVID-19 pandemic waves. Neglecting the presence of parabens in water exposes humans to these compounds through contaminated food and drinking water. Although there are reviews that focus on the occurrence, fate, and behavior of parabens in the environment, they frequently overlook critical aspects such as removal methods, policy development, and regulatory frameworks. Addressing this gap, the effective treatment of parabens in water relies on combined approaches that address both cost and operational challenges. Membrane filtration methods, such as nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO), demonstrate high efficacy but are hindered by maintenance and energy costs due to extensive fouling. Innovations in anti-fouling and energy efficiency, coupled with pre-treatment methods like adsorption, help mitigate these costs and enhance scalability. Furthermore, combining adsorption with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) or biological treatments significantly improves economic and energy efficiency. Integrating systems like O₃/UV with activated carbon, along with byproduct recovery strategies, further advances circular economy goals by minimizing waste and resource use. This review provides a thorough overview of paraben monitoring in wastewater, current treatment techniques, and the regulatory policies that govern their presence. Biofouling in membrane filtration systems poses significant operational challenges, leading to decreased permeate flux. The aim of this work was to study the anti-biofilm properties of new nanofiltration membranes produced via layer-by-layer, LBL, assembly by coating a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) support with a polyethylenimine (PEI) and poly(acrylic acid)/graphene oxide (PAA-GO) mixture. The membranes were characterized according to contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy and their Z-potential. Biofilm quantification and characterization were carried out using crystal violet staining and SEM, while bacterial viability was assessed by using colony-forming units. The membrane with three bilayers ((PAA-PEI)3/PVDF) showed a roughness of 77.78 nm. The incorporation of GO ((GO/PAA-PEI)3/PVDF) produced a membrane with a smoother surface (roughness of 26.92 nm) and showed salt rejections of 16% and 68% for NaCl and Na2SO4, respectively. A significant reduction, ranging from 82.37 to 77.30%, in biofilm formation produced by S. aureus and E. coli were observed on modified membranes. Additionally, the bacterial viability on the modified membranes was markedly reduced (67.42–99.98%). Our results show that the modified membranes exhibited both antibiofilm and antimicrobial capacities, suggesting that these properties mainly depend on the properties of the modifying agents, as the initial adherence on the membrane surface was not totally suppressed, but the proliferation and formation of EPSs were prevented. Polymeric membranes have emerged as a versatile and efficient liquid separation technology, addressing the growing demand for sustainable, high-performance separation processes in various industrial sectors. We discuss the underlying principles of membrane separation, selecting suitable polymers, and integrating novel materials, such as mixed-matrix and composite membranes, to enhance selectivity, permeability, and antifouling properties. The article also highlights the challenges and limitations associated with polymeric membranes, including stability, fouling, and scalability, and explores potential solutions to overcome these obstacles. Heavy metal pollution is a worldwide and stringent concern following many decades of industrialization and intensive mining without (in some cases) consideration for environmental protection. This review aims to identify the existing and emerging techniques for heavy metals (HM) removal/recycling from water and wastewater, with an emphasis on cobalt. Unlike many other heavy metals, cobalt has not been considered a detrimental element for the environment and human beings until recently. Thus, several methods and applicable techniques were evaluated to identify the best treatment approaches applicable to cobalt-polluted water and wastewater. The most feasible depollution methods adapted to the source, environment, and economic conditions were investigated and concluded. The operations and processes presented in this paper are conventional and innovative as well, including precipitation, membrane separation, with emphasis on ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF), but also reverse osmosis/forward osmosis (RO/FO), sorption/chemisorption processes, flotation/mechanical separation operations combined with coagulation/flocculation, photocatalysis, and electrochemical processes. For each one, depending on the frequency of use, physicochemical mechanisms and optimal operational conditions were identified to carry out successful cobalt removal and recovery from aqueous environments. Advancements in membrane separation techniques will expand the applications and requirements for highly specialized, inventive, efficient, and resistant separation materials. The selective separation of rare earth elements (REEs) is one of the expanding applications of membrane-based techniques, as their use is becoming more widespread. Membrane techniques are becoming increasingly desired as environmentally friendly, straightforward methods for treating wastewater and separating metals. For the separation of REEs, an innovative impregnated mixed-matrix membrane (IMMM) technique was developed in this study. It provides a selective, efficient, and reusable method that is suitable for industrial applications. Terbium was selectively adsorbed from other REEs using organophosphorus IMMM with a loading capacity of 113.2 mg/g in 3 h and was reused three times without destroying the initial membrane. High-temperature fermentation (HTF) of ethanol can reduce costs of cooling, sterilization, and related equipment compared to the costs of general ethanol fermentation. To realize HTF, however, there are various issues to be considered, such as the fermentation temperature upper limit for ethanol-producing thermotolerant yeast, the size of a fermenter that does not require cooling, and the effective temperature for suppressing microbial contamination. This study focused on these issues and also on downstream processes that exploit the advantages of HTF at temperatures exceeding 40 °C. The permissible size of a fermenter without cooling was estimated by simulating heat generation and heat dissipation. Fermentation productivity at high temperatures when using the thermotolerant yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus and the inhibitory effect of high temperatures on the growth of contaminant microorganisms were examined. After fermentation, the recovery and concentration of ethanol were performed by reduced-pressure distillation (RPD) and membrane separation. These experiments demonstrate that efficient HTF can reduce the amount of saccharifying enzymes in simultaneous saccharification and fermentation and can shorten the transition time from the saccharification step to the fermentation step in separate saccharification and fermentation, that RPD at fermentation temperatures enables a smooth connection to the HTF step and can be performed with a relatively weak vacuum, and that membrane separation can reduce the running cost compared to the cost of general distillation on a compact scale. In this study, different molecular weight cut-off ultrafiltration membranes (100 and 50 kDa) were used to concentrate and separate whey protein and blueberry juice fermented system by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to demonstrate that the mixed fermentation had a protective effect on LAB and antioxidant activity during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. The antioxidant activity after gastrointestinal digestion, the survival rate of LAB after membrane filtration, and their ability to reflect ultraviolet light of the membrane concentrated fermented components were investigated. It was found that the ABTS cationic free radical scavenging ability of L. plantarum 67 and L. paracasei W125 fermented group increased by 7.85%, especially after digestion, which increased by 3.17% compared with the unfermented blueberry and whey protein mixed group. The survival rates of L. plantarum 67 and L. paracasei W125 in the blueberry-whey protein mixture were greater than 82.45% after digestion. The ultrafiltration membrane concentration process had little effect on the viability of LAB during 0–50 min. The mixture of L. bulgaricus 134 and S. thermophiles Grx02 fermented blueberry-whey protein showed strong UV reflection at 300 nm, reaching 27.39%. The mixture of L. plantarum 67 and L. paracasei W125 fermented blueberry-whey protein showed strong UV reflection at 335 nm, reaching 34.29%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The separation of high-purity hydrogen from mixed gasses using dense metallic alloy membranes is essential for advancing a hydrogen-based economy. Palladium-based membranes exhibit outstanding catalytic activity and theoretically infinite hydrogen selectivity, but their high cost and limited performance in contaminant-rich environments restrict their widespread use. This study addresses these limitations by exploring strategies to develop cost-effective, high-performance alternatives. Key challenges include the vast compositional design space, lack of systematic design principles, and the slow pace of traditional material development. This review emphasizes the potential of high-throughput and combinatorial techniques, such as composition-spread alloy films and the statistical design of experiments (DoE), combined with machine learning and materials informatics, to accelerate the discovery, optimization, and characterization of palladium-based membranes. These approaches reduce development time and costs while improving efficiency. Focusing on critical properties such as surface catalytic activity, resistance to chemical and physical stresses, and the incorporation of low-cost base metals, this study introduces domain-specific descriptors to address data scarcity and improve material screening. By integrating computational and experimental methods, future research can identify hidden material correlations and expedite the rational design of next-generation hydrogen separation membranes. Reverse osmosis and microfiltration are two membrane-based separation techniques that have gained popularity over the past few decades. A fundamental barrier to improving the overall efficiency of membrane separation is membrane fouling. The accumulation of foulants causes a reduction in permeate flux, a loss of selectivity and permeability, and a reduction in the membrane's lifespan. Numerous chemical and physical surface changes have been studied to enhance membrane antifouling properties. Additionally, research has concentrated on creating membranes that use cutting-edge materials to improve their antifouling capability. This paper focuses on a wide-ranging and thorough analyses of the different types of fouling during wastewater treatment based on current research results regarding fouling control strategy and the potential of new methods for wastewater treatment. Collagen peptides play a crucial role in promoting skin elasticity and enhancing joint health, with potential functions to be explored. Enzyme hydrolysis is crucial for the molecular weight and sequence of peptides, influencing the bio-activity. In this study, the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity and fibroblast proliferation activity of differentially molecular weight peptides derived from dual- or triple-enzyme hydrolysis were compared. Ultrafiltration membrane filtration was used to separate the hydrolyzed prepared collagen peptides into two components based on the molecular size. The results showed that the low-molecular-weight peptide fraction containing peptides with P at the C-terminal, such as KP, RP, and POGP, exhibited high ACE inhibitory activity. The low-molecular-weight peptide fraction obtained through triple-enzyme hydrolysis incorporating ginger protease exhibited the highest ACE inhibitory activity, with an IC50 3.1 mg/mL. In addition, the triple-enzyme hydrolyzed collagen peptides passing across membranes displayed higher migration rates and enhanced collagen synthesis capabilities, containing peptide sequences, such as POGP, POGA, and LPO, potentially promoting fibroblast proliferation. The results would provide practical guidance for the production of collagen peptides with high ACE inhibitory activity and fibroblast proliferation activity, in terms of enzyme processing and highly active peptide separation. Ion-selective separation, especially Na+/Ca2+ separation, is of significant importance in the realms of biomimetic research and the fabrication of biomimetic devices, underscoring the pivotal role that sodium and calcium ions play in cellular metabolism. However, the analogous ionic radii and charge densities shared by sodium and calcium ions significantly impede their effective discrimination, presenting formidable challenges for the precise engineering of ion separation materials, such as separation membranes. In this study, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) separation membrane hybridized with zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (UiO-66, UiO-66-NO2 and UiO-66-NH2) was constructed. Through the meticulous design of the MOF functional groups, the material's affinity for specific ions was modulated, thereby achieving efficient Na+/Ca2+ separation. Notably, the PDMS integrated with amino-modified Zr-MOF exhibited an efficacious selective separation of Na+ and Ca2+ ions. The interaction between the amino group of UiO-66-NH2 and Ca2+ gave rise to the observed superior selectivity toward Ca2+ cations and enhanced separation efficiencies of up to 64% compared to pristine PDMS for UiO-66-NH2-embedded membranes. The manuscript presents research focusing on the adsorption and emulsion properties of starch hydrolysates modified through acetylation, oxidation, and cross-linking. The techniques used in this study included measurements of equilibrium surface tension (du Noüy ring) dynamic surface tension (drop shape analysis), and the preparation and evaluation of emulsion stability (TURBISCAN). The surface activity of the acetylated starch hydrolysates is affected by the degree of acetylation. The acetylated starch 0.02Ac-H exhibited higher surface activity than the more highly substituted derivative 0.1Ac-H. Furthermore, it was shown that the surface activity of the components increased as the acetylated oxidized starch underwent hydrolysis. The fractions collected after 180 min using a membrane with a low separation capability (8 kDa) revealed the highest capacity for reducing surface tension. In binary systems consisting of starch derivatives and surfactants, synergistic effects in reducing surface tension were particularly noticeable in systems containing ionic surfactants. The addition of a cationic surfactant to the modified starch hydrolysate solution (1:6 mol/mol) resulted in a significantly more efficient saturation of the air/water interface. This study demonstrated that emulsions stabilized with modified starch hydrolysates remained stable over time, even when these hydrolysates constituted up to 60% of the emulsifier mixture. With the inherent demand for hydrophobic materials in processes such as membrane distillation and unidirectional moisture conduction, the preparation and application development of profiles such as modified cellulose acetate membranes that have both hydrophobic functions and biological properties have become a research hotspot. Compared with the petrochemical polymer materials used in conventional hydrophobic membrane preparation, cellulose acetate, as the most important cellulose derivative, exhibits many advantages, such as a high natural abundance, good film forming, and easy modification and biodegradability, and it is a promising polymer raw material for environmental purification. This paper focuses on the research progress of the hydrophobic cellulose acetate preparation process and its current application in the water-treatment and resource-utilization fields. It provides a detailed introduction and comparison of the technical characteristics, existing problems, and development trends of micro- and nanostructure and chemical functional surface construction in the hydrophobic modification of cellulose acetate. Further review was conducted and elaborated on the applications of hydrophobic cellulose acetate membranes and other profiles in oil–water separation, brine desalination, water-repellent protective materials, and other separation/filtration fields. Based on the analysis of the technological and performance advantages of profile products such as hydrophobic cellulose acetate membranes, it is noted that key issues need to be addressed and urgently resolved for the further development of hydrophobic cellulose acetate membranes. The application of antibiotics has advanced modern medicine significantly. However, the abuse and discharge of antibiotics have led to substantial antibiotic residues in water, posing great harm to natural organisms and humans. To address the problem of antibiotic degradation, this study developed a novel catalytic membrane by depositing Co catalysts onto MXene nanosheets and fabricating the polyethersulfone composite (Co@MXene/PES) using vacuum-assisted self-assembly. The dual role of MXene as both a carrier for Co atoms and an enhancer of interlayer spacing led to improved flux and catalytic degradation capabilities of the membrane. Experimental results confirmed that the Co@MXene/PES membrane effectively degraded antibiotics through peroxymonosulfate activation, achieving up to 95.51% degradation at a cobalt concentration of 0.01 mg/mL. The membrane demonstrated excellent antibacterial properties, minimal flux loss after repeated use, and robust anti-fouling performance, making it a promising solution for efficient antibiotic removal and stable water treatment. Thin-film composite (TFC) membranes containing various fillers and additives present an effective alternative to conventional dense polymer membranes, which often suffer from low permeance (flux) and the permeability–selectivity tradeoff. Alongside the development and utilization of numerous new polymers over the past few decades, diverse additives such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), graphene oxides (GOs), and ionic liquids (ILs) have been integrated into the polymer matrix to enhance performance. However, achieving desirable interfacial compatibility between these additives and the host polymer matrix, particularly in TFC structures, remains a significant challenge. This review discusses recent advancements in TFC membranes for CO2/N2 separation, focusing on material structure, polymer–additive interaction, interface and separation properties. Specifically, we examine membranes operating under dry conditions to clearly assess the impact of additives on membrane properties and performance. The superiorities provided by polymeric composite membranes in comparison to the original membrane have generated increased attention, particularly in the field of protein separation applications. This work involved the fabrication of polysulfone composite membranes using variable loadings of activated carbon particle sizes, namely, 37 µm, 74 µm, 149 µm, and 297 µm. The membranes were fabricated via the phase-inversion method, employing water as the coagulant. In this study, the impact of the AC powder particle sizes on membrane morphology, water contact angle, porosity, average pore size, molecular weight cutoff, pure water flux, and protein rejection was examined. Different membrane morphologies and properties were achieved by incorporating a variety of AC particle sizes. A porous membrane with the maximum pure water flux was generated by the loading of finer AC particles. Concurrently, protein rejection is increasing as a result of the use of AC particles as an infill in the composite membrane. In comparison to all fabricated membranes, the AC filler with a particle size of 149 µm exhibited the highest rejection of the lysozyme protein, reaching up to 73.9%, with a relatively high water permeability of 33 LMH/Bar. The present study presents, for the first time, the real-time monitoring of an actual spiral-wound membrane unit used for CO 2 removal from natural gas in an actual industrial offshore platform, utilizing a detailed phenomenological model. An Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) paradigm was employed to simulate the offshore membrane separation unit, accounting for the diverse levels of the membrane separation setup. A parameter estimation procedure was implemented to fit the phenomenological model to the real industrial data in real-time, for the first time. In addition, estimated permeance parameters and calculated unmeasured variables (soft sensor) were used for monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as membrane selectivity, dew point temperature, and hydrocarbon loss. Finally, a reparametrization of the parameters was implemented to improve the robustness of the optimization procedure. Thus, the model variables presented good adjustments to the data, indicating the satisfactory performance of the estimation. Hydrogen, a vital resource, is utilized in many process units within the refinery. The purification system is widely used to regenerate and improve hydrogen quality, therefore reducing fresh hydrogen consumption. Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane separation (MS) technologies are widely utilized for the purification of hydrogen, and the process can be optimized by constructing mathematical models. Thus, at first, a parametric analysis of the purification models is conducted to identify the key variables of these models during the optimization process, which also reveals the necessity of coupling multiple purification units. Then, a superstructure-based hydrogen network (HN) model comprising multi-stage PSA and MS units is constructed, aiming to determine the optimal hydrogen allocation and purification system. This model considers the simultaneous optimization of purification system parameters, including operating pressure, in conjunction with its structural configuration. This case study demonstrates the applicability of the HN model to diverse refinery scenarios. The health risks associated with the presence of heavy metals in drinking water can be severe. To address this issue, membrane separation technology is one of the consolidated alternatives. Inorganic, porous membranes were found in applications where low energy consumption is highly desirable. The selectivity of these membranes is attained by functionalisation. Graphene oxide functionalised membrane technology is promising for removing heavy metal ions. This work summarises, discusses and presents the relationship between adsorption and overall membrane separation process performance for heavy metal ions removal from wastewater when a graphene oxide-functionalised membrane is used. The separation performance depends on the hydrophobic interactions of the membrane and the solute. The electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged membrane surface and positively charged metal ions facilitates the adsorption, leading to the rejection of these metal ions. The Electrodialysis with Filtration Membrane (EDFM) system has shown promise in juice enrichment, but further optimization is needed. This study evaluated the effect of processing duration (3 and 6 h) on juice composition, process efficiency, and membrane fouling. Results demonstrated a significant impact of processing time on juice composition, especially anthocyanin and mineral content. Two anthocyanin-depleted juices (−18.94% and −30.70%) and two anthocyanin-enriched juices (26.21% and 44.21%) were produced. Similar energy (1512.13 Wh/g of anthocyanins) was required to migrate equivalent amounts of anthocyanins over both time periods, with no impediment due to fouling observed, although the system's resistance increased (2.5-fold after 3 h, 3.2-fold after 6 h). Membrane fouling was characterized through conductivity, thickness, ATR-FTIR, SEM-EDX, and foulant identification. Minimal anthocyanin accumulation occurred on cation-exchange membranes (CEM), while anthocyanins and PACs concentrated within the filtering layer of filtration membranes (FM). However, fouling did not increase with longer processing. Structural alterations were noted in anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), suggesting instability under high electric fields. Overall, EDFM effectively enriched cranberry juice with anthocyanins, but further research is necessary to address AEM degradation under limiting current density conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The separation of used engine oil (UEO) with an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane made of commercial copolymer of poly(acrylonitrile-co-methyl acrylate) (P(AN-co-MA)) has been investigated. The P(AN-co-MA) sample was characterized by using FTIR spectroscopy, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and XRD. The UF membrane with a mean pore size of 23 nm was fabricated by using of non-solvent-induced phase separation method—the casting solution of 13 wt.% P(AN-co-MA) in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) was precipitated in the water bath. Before the experiment, the used engine oil was diluted with toluene, and the resulting UEO solution in toluene (100 g/L) was filtered through the UF membrane in the dead-end filtration mode. Special attention was given to the evaluation of membrane fouling; for instance, the permeability of UEO solution was dropped from its initial value of 2.90 L/(m2·h·bar) and then leveled off at 0.75 L/(m2·h·bar). However, the membrane cleaning (washing with toluene) allowed a recovery of 79% of the initial pure toluene flux (flux recovery ratio), indicating quite attractive membrane resistance toward irreversible fouling with engine oil components. The analysis of the feed, retentate, and permeate by various analytical methods showed that the filtration through the UF membrane made of P(AN-co-MA) provided the removal of major contaminants of used engine oil including polymerization products and metals (rejection—96.3%). Water scarcity is a critical global issue, necessitating efficient water purification and desalination methods. Membrane separation methods are environmentally friendly and consume less energy, making them more economical compared to other desalination and purification methods. This survey explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict membrane behaviour in water purification and desalination processes. Various AI platforms, including machine learning (ML) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), were utilised to model water flux, predict fouling behaviour, simulate micropollutant dynamics and optimise operational parameters. Specifically, models such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and support vector machines (SVMs) have demonstrated superior predictive capabilities in these applications. This review studies recent advancements, emphasising the superior predictive capabilities of AI models compared to traditional methods. Key findings include the development of AI models for various membrane separation techniques and the integration of AI concepts such as ML and ANNs to simulate membrane fouling, water flux and micropollutant behaviour, aiming to enhance wastewater treatment and optimise treatment and desalination processes. In conclusion, this review summarised the applications of AI in predicting the behaviour of membranes as well as their strengths, weaknesses and future directions of AI in membranes for water purification and desalination processes. Pervaporation has been a central subject in the research community within the scope of the further development of energy- and cost-efficient alternatives to conventional liquid–liquid separation technologies. The potential eligibility of four commercial membranes (ZEBREX ZX0, PERVAPTM 4155-80, PERVAPTM 4100, PERVAPTM 4101) for use in an integrated dehydration application of a diethyl carbonate/water/ethanol mixture by pervaporation was assessed experimentally. The impact of feed concentration, operating temperature, pressure, and sweep gas flow rate on membrane separation performance, including permeation flux, permeate quality, selectivity, and permeance, was thoroughly investigated. Applying the ZX0 membrane delivered the best qualities of all tested membranes of the permeate stream, with a water concentration of mostly >98%. In comparing the water flux, the ZX0 membrane remained reasonably competitive with the polymer membranes. Furthermore, the sweep gas volume flow rate and the operating temperature were identified as influencing the flux significantly but not the product composition. At the same time, the feed concentration of water also influenced the water purity within the permeate. Plastic film mulching technology can effectively enhance crop yield and quality, and the use of mulch has been increasing in recent years; however, the problem of mulch residue is worsening due to the large amount of recycling work and slow natural degradation. In this study, a potato seedling killing and residual film recycling machine is designed to provide good working conditions for potato harvesters before harvesting in response to the problems of difficult separation of film tangles, the low net rate of recycling due to the mixing of residual film with soil, and the high soil content in residual film recycling operations in northwest China. The machine is based on the potato monoculture and double row planting mode in Gansu area. This paper puts forward the overall design scheme and carries out the theoretical analysis and parameter determination of the key components, such as the seedling killing device, the film surface cleaning device, the film unloading device, and so on. Using EDEM software to carry out the virtual simulation test and Design-Expert13 to analyze the test results, we determined the optimal working scheme for the machine, with a forward speed of 0.8 m/s, a film gap of 125 mm, and a spiral stirrer speed of 600 r/min. Based on a field test for verification, the test results show that the machine's residual film recovery rate was 83.3%, the impurity rate was 3.8%, and the rate of injury to the potatoes was 1.4%. The machine meets the requirements of national and industry standards, and it can simultaneously realize straw crushing, film surface cleaning, residual film recycling, and hydraulic film unloading operations, with better operating results and while reaching the expected results. The global energy market is shifting toward renewable, sustainable, and low-carbon hydrogen energy due to global environmental issues, such as rising carbon dioxide emissions, climate change, and global warming. Currently, a majority of hydrogen demands are achieved by steam methane reforming and other conventional processes, which, again, are very carbon-intensive methods, and the hydrogen produced by them needs to be purified prior to their application. Hence, researchers are continuously endeavoring to develop sustainable and efficient methods for hydrogen generation and purification. Membrane-based gas-separation technologies were proven to be more efficient than conventional technologies. This review explores the transition from conventional separation techniques, such as pressure swing adsorption and cryogenic distillation, to advanced membrane-based technologies with high selectivity and efficiency for hydrogen purification. Major emphasis is placed on various membrane materials and their corresponding membrane performance. First, we discuss various metal membranes, including dense, alloyed, and amorphous metal membranes, which exhibit high hydrogen solubility and selectivity. Further, various inorganic membranes, such as zeolites, silica, and CMSMs, are also discussed. Major emphasis is placed on the development of polymeric materials and membranes for the selective separation of hydrogen from CH4, CO2, and N2. In addition, cutting-edge mixed-matrix membranes are also delineated, which involve the incorporation of inorganic fillers to improve performance. This review provides a comprehensive overview of advancements in gas-separation membranes and membrane materials in terms of hydrogen selectivity, permeability, and durability in practical applications. The room temperature ionic liquid trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium decanoate ([P66614][Dec]) was employed in the liquid-liquid extraction of Co(II) from hydrochloric acid solutions in the presence of Ni(II). The extraction performance in liquid-liquid separations showed a strong dependence on the acid content of the feed aqueous solution. The best performance in terms of extracted cobalt and selectivity was obtained when the feed contained a HCl concentration above 6 M On the contrary, when the experiment was performed in absence of HCl, a lower extraction and Co/Ni selectivity were obtained. This behavior has been rationalized by considering the protonation of the [Dec]− anion and the different Co(II)/Ni(II) speciation in HCl media. Moreover, polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) were prepared using PVC and [P66614][Dec] at different weight rations. Only the PIM formulated with a 30:70/PVC:[P66614][Dec] weight ratio demonstrated effective extraction of Co(II) from the HCl solution. The extraction efficiency and selectivity of the PIM was comparable to that from biphasic liquid experiments at 8 M HCl. Nanofiltration (NF) has become a widely used technology in water treatment due to its environmental friendliness, energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and operational simplicity. However, polyamide (PA) NF membranes still face challenges, including low permeate flux, limited resistance to organic pollutants, and inadequate resilience to residual chlorine. To address these issues, this study developed a thin-film composite (TFC) NF membrane featuring a separation layer of sandwich structure. Initially, a single separation layer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) NF membrane was prepared, followed by the fabrication of a PA layer on its surface, and ultimately, a second PVA layer was constructed on the PA layer. The experimental results show that the PVA/PA/PVA sandwich structure TFC exhibits high permeability to pure water and robust resistance to both pollution and residual chlorine. The PVA-0.20/PA/PVA-0.20 TFC, prepared with a 0.20%w/v PVA solution, achieved a pure water flux of up to 22.05 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 (LMH/bar), which was 2.92 times higher than that of the control TFC membrane. Additionally, it demonstrated a salt rejection rate exceeding 96% for Na2SO4 and over 99% for Congo Red (CR) and Victoria Blue B (VB). In comparison with the control TFC membrane, the PVA-0.20/PA/PVA-0.20 membrane exhibited significantly enhanced resistance to pollution. Following immersion in a 1000 ppm NaClO solution for 4 h, the rejection rate of the control TFC membrane decreased markedly and that of the PVA-0.20/PA/PVA-0.20 membrane decreased marginally, indicating excellent resistance to residual chlorine. Featured Application: Slaughterhouse wastewater recycling using a combined process consisting of flotation, membrane bioreactor, and reverse osmosis. The implementation of research results in industrial applications is a crucial step in the development of innovative technologies. In this work, slaughterhouse wastewater recycling was successfully realized. The system, comprising a process combination of flotation, membrane bioreactor, and reverse osmosis, was able to treat the wastewater from a medium-sized poultry slaughterhouse in northwestern Tunisia. The process managed to treat approximately one-third of the wastewater to the required standard for agricultural irrigation. An additional 35% was purified to drinking-water quality. The remaining water was discharged as concentrate, meeting the necessary limits for indirect discharge. As a result, the slaughterhouse's fresh water consumption was reduced by 35% and the amount of wastewater by around 70%. Spirulina (Arthospira platensis) is known for its rich content of natural compounds like phycocyanin, chlorophylls, carotenoids, and high protein levels, making it a nutrient-dense food. Over the past decade, research has aimed to optimize the extraction, separation, and purification of these valuable metabolites, focusing on technologies such as high-pressure processing, ultrasound-assisted extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction as well as enzymatic treatments, chromatographic precipitation, and membrane separation. In this study, various extraction methods (conventional vs. ultrasound-assisted), solvents (water vs. phosphate buffer), solvent-to-biomass ratios (1:5 vs. 1:10), and ultrafiltration (PES membrane of MWCO 3 kDa, 2 bar) were evaluated. The quantities of total protein, phycocyanin (PC), chlorophyll a (Cla), and total carotenoids (TCC) were measured. The results showed that ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with phosphate buffer at a 1:10 ratio yielded a metabolite-rich retentate (MRR) with 37.0 ± 1.9 mg/g of PC, 617 ± 15 mg/g of protein, 0.4 ± 0.2 mg/g of Cla, and 0.15 ± 0.14 mg/g of TCC. Water extraction in the concentration process achieved the highest concentrations in MRR, with approximately 76% PC, 92% total protein, 62% Cla, and 41% TCC. These findings highlight the effective extraction and concentration processes to obtain a metabolite-rich retentate from Spirulina biomass, reducing the volume tenfold and showing potential as a functional ingredient for the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. As global demand for renewable energy and electric vehicles increases, the need for lithium has surged significantly. Extracting lithium from salt lake brine has become a cutting-edge technology in lithium resource production. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) GO/MXene composite membranes were fabricated using pressure-assisted filtration with a polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating, resulting in positively charged PEI-GO/MXene membranes. These innovative membranes, taking advantage of the synergistic effects of interlayer channel sieving and the Donnan effect, demonstrated excellent performance in Mg2+/Li+ separation with a mass ratio of 20 (Mg2+ rejection = 85.3%, Li+ rejection = 16.7%, SLi,Mg = 5.7) in simulated saline lake brine. Testing on actual salt lake brine in Tibet, China, confirmed the composite membrane's potential for effective Mg2+/Li+ separation. In the actual brine test with high concentration, Mg2+/Li+ after membrane separation is 2.2, which indicates that the membrane can significantly reduce the concentration of Mg2+ in the brine. Additionally, the PEI-GO/MXene composite membrane demonstrated strong anti-swelling properties and effective divalent ion rejection. As a promising wastewater treatment technology, ultrafiltration membranes face challenges related to fouling and flux reduction. To enhance these membranes, various strategies have been explored. Among them, the incorporation of nano-activated carbon (nAC) powder has emerged as an effective method. In this study, composite polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated using nAC powder at concentrations ranging from 0 to 8 wt.%. These membranes underwent comprehensive investigation, including assessments of membrane morphology, hydrophilicity, pure water flux, equilibrium water content, porosity, average pore size, and protein separation. The addition of activated carbon improved several desirable properties. Specifically, the hydrophilicity of the PSF membranes was enhanced, with the contact angle reduced from 69° to 58° for 8 wt.% of nAC composite membranes compared to the pristine PSF membrane. Furthermore, the water flux test revealed that 6 wt.% activated carbon-based membranes exhibited the highest flux, with a nearly 3 times improvement at 2 bar. Importantly, this enhancement did not compromise the protein rejection. Additionally, the introduction of nAC had a significant effect on the membrane's pore size by improving lysozyme rejection up to 40%. The use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for the preparation of polymer membranes for environmental separation technologies is comprehensively reviewed. DESs have been divided into five categories based on the hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and acceptor (HBA) that are involved in the production of the DESs, and a wide range of DESs' physicochemical characteristics, such as density, surface tension, viscosity, and melting temperature, are initially gathered. Furthermore, the most popular techniques for creating membranes have been demonstrated and discussed, with a focus on the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. Additionally, a number of studies have been reported in which DESs were employed as pore formers, solvents, additives, or co-solvents, among other applications. The addition of DESs to the manufacturing process increased the presence of finger-like structures and macrovoids in the cross-section and, on numerous occasions, had a substantial impact on the overall porosity and pore size. Performance data were also gathered for membranes made for various separation technologies, such as ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF). Lastly, DESs provide various options for the functionalization of membranes, such as the creation of various liquid membrane types, with special focus on supported liquid membranes (SLMs) for decarbonization technologies, discussed in terms of permeability and selectivity of several gases, including CO2, N2, and CH4. Membrane filtration is an effective water recycling and purification technology to remove various pollutants in water. Inorganic membrane filtration (IMF) technology has received widespread attention because of its unique high temperature and corrosion resistance. Commonly used inorganic membranes include ceramic membranes and carbon-based membranes. As novel catalytic inorganic membrane processes, IMF coupled with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), can realize the separation and in situ degradation of pollutants, thus mitigating membrane contamination. In this paper, the types and performance of IMF are discussed. The influencing factors of inorganic membranes in practical wastewater treatment are summarized. The applications, advantages, and disadvantages of the coupled process of IMF and AOPs are summarized and outlined. Finally, the challenges and prospects of IMF and IMF coupled with AOPs are presented, respectively. The growing production and use of plastics significantly contribute to microplastics (MPs) contamination in the environment. Humans are exposed to MPs primarily through the gastrointestinal route, as these particles are present in beverages and food, e.g., sugar. Effective isolation and identification of MPs from food is essential for their elimination. This study aimed to evaluate factors influencing the isolation of MPs from sucrose solutions to determine optimal conditions for the process. Polyethylene particles were used to test separation methods involving chemical digestion with acids and filtration through membrane filters made of nylon, mixed cellulose ester, and cellulose acetate with pore sizes of 0.8 and 10 µm. The effects of temperature and acid type and its concentration on plastic particles were examined using scanning electron microscopy and µ-Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that increased temperature reduces solution viscosity and sucrose adherence to MPs' particles, while higher acid concentrations accelerate sucrose hydrolysis. The optimal conditions for MPs' isolation were found to be 5% HCl at 70 °C for 5 min, followed by filtration using an efficient membrane system. These conditions ensure a high recovery and fast filtration without altering MPs' surface properties, providing a reliable basis for further analysis of MPs in food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The challenge of efficiently extracting Li+ from brines with high Na+ or Mg2+ concentrations has led to extensive research on developing highly selective separation membranes for electrodialysis. Various studies have demonstrated that nanofiltration membranes or adsorbents modified with crown ethers (CEs) such as 2-OH-12-crown-4-ether (12CE), 2-OH-18-crown-6-ether (18CE), and 2-OH-15-crown-5-ether (15CE) show selectivity for Li+ in brines. This study aims to develop high-performance cation exchange membranes (CEMs) using CEs to enhance Li+ selectivity and to compare the performance of various CE-modified membranes for selective electrodialysis. The novel CEM (CR671) was modified with 12CE, 18CE, and 15CE to identify the optimal CE for efficient Li+ recovery during brine electrodialysis. The modification process included polydopamine (PDA) treatment and the deposition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) complexes with the different CEs via hydrogen bonding. Interfacial polymerization with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride-crosslinked PEI was used to create specific channels for Li+ transport within the modified membranes (12CE/CR671, 15CE/CR671, and 18CE/CR671). The successful application of CE coatings and Li+ selectivity of the modified membranes were verified through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, zeta-potential measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Bench-scale electrodialysis tests showed significant improvements in permselectivity and Li+ flux for all three modified membranes. In brines with high Na+ and Mg2+ concentrations, the 15CE/CR671 membrane demonstrated more significant improvements in permselectivity compared to the 12CE/CR671 (3.3-fold and 1.7-fold) and the 18CE/CR671 (2.4-fold and 2.6-fold) membranes at current densities of 2.3 mA/cm2 and 2.2 mA/cm2, respectively. At higher current densities of 14.7 mA/cm2 in Mg2+-rich brine and 15.9 mA/cm2 in Na+-rich brine, the 15CE/CR671 membrane showed greater improvements in Li+ flux, approximately 2.1-fold and 2.3-fold, and 3.2-fold and 3.4-fold compared to the 12CE/CR671 and 18CE/CR671 membranes. This study underscores the superior performance of 15CE-modified membranes for efficient Li+ recovery with low energy demand and offers valuable insights for advancing electrodialysis processes in challenging brine environments. This research explored the use of a partially cross-linked graft copolymer (PCLNPG) as an innovative nanopolymer pore-forming agent to enhance polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) membranes for protein separation applications. The study systematically examined the impact of incorporating PCLNPG at varying concentrations on the morphological and surface properties of PPSU membranes. A thorough characterization of the resulting PPSU-PCLNPG membranes was performed, focusing on changes in morphology, water affinity, porosity, pore size, and pore size distribution. The experimental findings demonstrated that the use of PCLNPG led to a significantly more porous structure, as confirmed by SEM analysis, with notable increases in porosity and pore size (nearly double). Additionally, the hydrophilicity of the PPSU membrane was remarkably enhanced. Performance evaluations revealed a substantial improvement in pure water flux, with the flux nearly tripling. The BSA retention was directly correlated with the concentration of the PCLNPG pore former for a loading range of 0.25–0.75 wt.%. The incorporation of PCLNPG also reduced the membrane fouling propensity by reducing both cake layer resistance (Rc) and pore plugging resistance (Rp). In today's ongoing rapid urban expansion, deforestation and climate changes can be observed mainly as unbalanced rain occurrence during the year, long seasons without any rain at all and unordinary high temperatures. These adverse changes affect underground water levels and the availability of surface water. In addition, quite a significant proportion of drinking water is used mainly for non-drinking purposes. With several EU countries increasingly suffering from droughts, reusing quaternary treated urban wastewater can help address water scarcity. At the European level, Regulation 2020/741 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 May 2020 on minimum requirements for water reuse was adopted. This regulation foresees the use of recycled wastewater mainly for agricultural irrigation. This article provides an overview of various processes, such as filtration, coagulation, adsorption, ozonation, advanced oxidation processes and disinfection, for quaternary treatment of urban wastewater in order to remove micropollutants and achieve the requirements for wastewater reuse. According to the literature, the most effective method with acceptable financial costs is a combination of coagulation, membrane filtration (UF or NF) and UV disinfection. These processes are relatively well known and commercially available. This article also helps researchers to identify key themes and concepts, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of previous studies and determine areas where further research is needed. This study investigated the effect of different synthesis parameters including pre- and post-hydrothermal treatment on the formation of a high-quality SSZ-13 membrane layer. The membranes were identified initially by the gas tightness test, then were characterized by single gas permeation measurements applying H2, He, CO2, N2, CH4, and SF6 at room temperature. The results showed how each parameter affects the performance of the membrane, including structural defects in the formed selective layer, CO2 permeance, and the ideal CO2/CH4 permselectivity. This work focused on optimizing these parameters. An ideal CO2/CH4 permselectivity of up to 122 with CO2 permeance of ~3.72 × 10−6 [mol/(m2sPa)] and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 111 with CO2 permeance of 8.5 × 10−7 [mol/(m2sPa)] in an equimolar mixture at room temperature and pressure drop of 0.15 MPa was achieved. The use of hydrogen is pivotal for the energy and industrial transition in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. As technologies like fuel cells, e-fuels, and the semiconductor industry increasingly demand pure hydrogen, the development of efficient separation methods is crucial. While traditional methods such as pressure-swing adsorption are common, palladium (Pd)-based membranes are a promising alternative due to their energetic efficiency. This review summarizes the recent advances in Pd-based membranes for hydrogen separation over the last six years. It provides a theoretical overview of hydrogen permeation through membranes and examine the characteristics of various Pd alloys adopted in membrane fabrication, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of binary and ternary alloys, for different membrane types, including self-supported and supported membranes, as well as the role of intermediate layers. Additionally, the membrane characteristics used in some recent works on self-supported and supported Pd membranes are analyzed, focusing on operational parameters like permeability, selectivity, and durability.
