Medical data have unique specificity and professionalism, requiring substantial domain expertise for their annotation. Precise data annotation is essential for anomaly-detection tasks, making the training process complex. Domain generalization (DG) is an important approach to enhancing medical image anomaly detection (AD). This paper introduces a novel multimodal anomaly-detection framework called MedicalCLIP. MedicalCLIP utilizes multimodal data in anomaly-detection tasks and establishes irregular constraints within modalities for images and text. The key to MedicalCLIP lies in learning intramodal detailed representations, which are combined with text semantic-guided cross-modal contrastive learning, allowing the model to focus on semantic information while capturing more detailed information, thus achieving more fine-grained anomaly detection. MedicalCLIP relies on GPT prompts to generate text, reducing the demand for professional descriptions of medical data. Text construction for medical data helps to improve the generalization ability of multimodal models for anomaly-detection tasks. Additionally, during the text-image contrast-enhancement process, the model's ability to select and extract information from image data is improved. Through hierarchical contrastive loss, fine-grained representations are achieved in the image-representation process. MedicalCLIP has been validated on various medical datasets, showing commendable domain generalization performance in medical-data anomaly detection. Improvements were observed in both anomaly classification and segmentation metrics. In the anomaly classification (AC) task involving brain data, the method demonstrated a 2.81 enhancement in performance over the best existing approach.

Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are widely utilized in power equipment for condition monitoring. For the collected data, there generally exists a problem-missing data of different types and patterns. This leads to the poor quality and utilization difficulties of the collected data. To address this problem, this paper customizes methodology that combines an asymmetric denoising autoencoder (ADAE) and moving average filter (MAF) to perform accurate missing data imputation. First, convolution and gated recurrent unit (GRU) are applied to the encoder of the ADAE, while the decoder still utilizes the fully connected layers to form an asymmetric network structure. The ADAE extracts the local periodic and temporal features from monitoring data and then decodes the features to realize the imputation of the multi-type missing. On this basis, according to the continuity of power data in the time domain, the MAF is utilized to fuse the prior knowledge of the neighborhood of missing data to secondarily optimize the imputed data. Case studies reveal that the developed method achieves greater accuracy compared to existing models. This paper adopts experiments under different scenarios to justify that the MAF-ADAE method applies to actual power equipment monitoring data imputation.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a widespread and harmful disease, and is closely linked to acute endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Previous reports have shown that acute ER stress can suppress hepatic gluconeogenesis and even leads to hypoglycemia. However, the mechanism is still unclear. MAPK phosphatase 3 (MKP-3) is a positive regulator for gluconeogenesis. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the role of MKP-3 in the suppression of gluconeogenesis by acute ER stress, as well as the regulatory role of acute ER stress on the expression of MKP-3. Results showed that acute ER stress induced by tunicamycin significantly suppressed gluconeogenesis in both hepatocytes and mouse liver, reduced glucose production level in hepatocytes, and decreased fasting blood glucose level in mice. Additionally, the protein level of MKP-3 was reduced by acute ER stress in both hepatocytes and mouse liver. Mkp-3 deficiency eliminated the inhibitory effect of acute ER stress on gluconeogenesis in hepatocytes. Moreover, the reduction effect of acute ER stress on blood glucose level and hepatic glucose 6-phosphatase ( G6pc ) expression was not observed in the liver-specific Mkp-3 knockout mice. Furthermore, activation of protein kinase R-like ER kinase (PERK) decreased the MKP-3 protein level, while inactivation of PERK abolished the reduction effect of acute ER stress on the MKP-3 protein level in hepatocytes. Taken together, our study suggested that acute ER stress could suppress hepatic gluconeogenesis by stimulating MKP-3 degradation via PERK, at least partially. Thus, MKP-3 might be a therapeutic target for DILI-related hypoglycemia.

Increased glucocorticoid (GC) levels act as a master contributor to central obesity in estrogen-depleted females; however, what factors cause their increased GC production is unclear. Given (1) liver fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and GCs regulate each other's production in a feed-forward loop, and (2) circulating FGF21 and GCs are parallelly increased in menopausal women and ovariectomized mice, we thus hypothesized that elevation of hepatic FGF21 secretion causes increased GGs production in estrogen-depleted females. Using the ovariectomized mice as a model for menopausal women, we found that ovariectomy (OVX) increased circulating corticosterone levels, which in turn increased visceral adipose Hsd11b1 expression, thus causing visceral obesity in females. In contrast, liver-specific FGF21 knockout (FGF21 LKO) completely reversed OVX-induced high GCs and high visceral adipose Hsd11b1 expression, thus abrogating OVX-induced obesity in females. Even though FGF21 LKO failed to rescue OVX-induced dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and insulin resistance. What's worse, FGF21 LKO even further exacerbated whole-body glucose metabolic dysfunction as evidenced by more impaired glucose and pyruvate tolerance and worsened insulin resistance. Mechanically, we found that FGF21 LKO reduced circulating insulin levels, thus causing the dissociation between decreased central obesity and the improvement of obesity-related metabolic syndromes in OVX mice. Collectively, our results suggest that liver FGF21 plays an essential role in mediating OVX-induced central obesity by promoting GC production. However, lack of liver FGF21 signaling reduces insulin production and in turn causes the dissociation between decreased central obesity and the improvement of obesity-related metabolic syndromes, highlighting a detrimental role for hepatic FGF21 signals in mediating the development of central obesity but a beneficial role in preventing metabolic abnormality from further exacerbation in estrogen-depleted females.

Despite surpassing lung cancer as the most frequently diagnosed cancer, female breast cancer (BC) still lacks rapid detection methods for screening that can be implemented on a large scale in practical clinical settings. However, urine is a readily available biofluid obtained non-invasively and contains numerous volatile organic metabolites (VOMs) that offer valuable metabolic information concerning the onset and progression of diseases. In this work, a rapid method for analysis of VOMs in urine by using high-pressure photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPPI-TOFMS) coupled with dynamic purge injection. A simple pretreatment process of urine samples by adding acid and salt was employed for efficient VOM sampling, and the numbers of metabolites increased and the detection sensitivity was improved after the acid (HCl) and salt (NaCl) addition. The established mass spectrometry detection method was applied to analyze a set of training samples collected from a local hospital, including 24 breast cancer patients and 27 healthy controls. Statistical analysis techniques such as principal component analysis, partial least squares discriminant analysis, and the Mann-Whitney U test were used, and nine VOMs were identified as differential metabolites. Finally, acrolein, 2-pentanone, and methyl allyl sulfide were selected to build a metabolite combination model for distinguishing breast cancer patients from the healthy group, and the achieved sensitivity and specificity were 92.6% and 91.7%, respectively, according to the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The results demonstrate that this technology has potential to become a rapid screening tool for breast cancer, with significant room for further development.

ZrB 2 -SiC-Zr 2 Al 4 C 5 multi-phase ceramics with uniform structure and high density were successfully prepared through the introduction of in situ synthesized Zr 2 Al 4 C 5 into ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic via SPS at 1800 °C. A systematic analysis and discussion of the experimental results and proposed mechanisms were carried out to demonstrate the composition-dependent sintering properties, mechanical properties and oxidation behavior. The results showed that the in situ synthesized Zr 2 Al 4 C 5 could be evenly distributed in the ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic matrix and inhibited the growth of ZrB 2 grains, which played a positive role in the sintering densification of the composite ceramics. With increasing Zr 2 Al 4 C 5 content, the Vickers hardness and Young's modulus of composite ceramics gradually decreased. The fracture toughness showed a trend that first increased and then decreased, and was increased by about 30% compared with ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics. The major phases resulting from the oxidation of samples were ZrO 2 , ZrSiO 4 , aluminosilicate and SiO 2 glass. With increasing Zr 2 Al 4 C 5 content, the oxidative weight showed a trend that first increased then decreased; the composite ceramic with 30 vol.% Zr 2 Al 4 C 5 showed the smallest oxidative weight gain. We believe that the presence of Zr 2 Al 4 C 5 results in the formation of Al 2 O 3 during the oxidation process, subsequently resulting in a lowering of the viscosity of the glassy silica scale, which in turn intensifies the oxidation of the composite ceramics. This would also increase oxygen permeation through the scale, adversely affecting the oxidation resistance of the composites with high Zr 2 Al 4 C 5 content.

Fiber metal laminates have been widely used as the primary materials in aircraft panels, and have excellent specific strength. Bending deformation is the most common loading mode of such components. An accurate theoretical predictive model for the bending process for the carbon reinforced aluminum laminates is of great significance for predicting the actual stress response. In this paper, based on the metal-plastic bending theory and the modified classical fiber laminate theory, a modified bending theory model of carbon-fiber-reinforced aluminum laminates was established. The plastic deformation of the thin metal layer in laminates and the interaction between fiber and metal interfaces were considered in this model. The bending strength was predicted analytically. The FMLs were made from 5052 aluminum sheets, with carbon fibers as the reinforcement, and were bonded and cured by locally manufacturers. The accuracy of the theory was verified by three-point bending experiments, and the prediction error was 8.4%. The results show that the fiber metal laminates consisting of three layers of aluminum and two layers of fiber had the best bending properties. The theoretical model could accurately predict the bending deformation behaviors of fiber metal laminates, and has significant value for the theoretical analysis and performance testing of laminates., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

The surface microstructure formed by physical or chemical modification is essential for the desired joint strength. However, defects in the bonding interface and adhesive can be found. Such defects decrease shear strength and durability. In this study, ultrasonic vibration was applied to liquid adhesive on the sandblasted aluminum alloy plates. With ultrasonic treatment, the joints obtained the compact bonding interfaces and lower porosity of the adhesive layer. The treatment improved the shear strength by 9.1%. After two weeks of hydrothermal aging, the shear strength of joints only sandblasted decreased drastically by 48.9%, while it was 14% for the joints with ultrasonic vibration. The cavitation effect in the adhesive was detected by the aluminum foil erosion method. The result showed that a great number of micro-jets generated by the cavitation effect have intensive impact on the bonding interface which provide the adhesive with powerful force to fill the micro-grooves. Another finding in this work is that bubbles were gathered in the adhesive away from the vibration area. This mechanism was successfully used to reduce the porosity of the adhesive layer of joints.

Extracting high-accuracy landslide areas using deep learning methods from high spatial resolution remote sensing images is a hot topic in current research. However, the existing deep learning algorithms are affected by background noise and landslide scale effects during the extraction process, leading to poor feature extraction effects. To address this issue, this paper proposes an improved mask regions-based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) model to identify the landslide distribution in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) images. The improvement of the model mainly includes three aspects: (1) an attention mechanism of the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is added to the backbone residual neural network (ResNet). (2) A bottom-up channel is added to the feature pyramidal network (FPN) module. (3) The region proposal network (RPN) is replaced by guided anchoring (GA-RPN). Sanming City, China was selected as the study area for the experiments. The experimental results show that the improved model has a recall of 91.4% and an accuracy of 92.6%, which is 12.9% and 10.9% higher than the original Mask R-CNN model, respectively, indicating that the improved model is more effective in landslide extraction.

Liver cancer, consisting mainly of hepatocellular carcinoma, is the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Despite advances in targeted therapies, these approaches remain insufficient in meeting the pressing clinical demands. Here, we present a novel alternative that calls for a non-apoptotic program to solve the current dilemma. Specifically, we identified that tubeimoside 2 (TBM-2) could induce methuosis in hepatocellular carcinoma cells, a recently recognized mode of cell death characterized by pronounced vacuolization, necrosis-like membrane disruption, and no response to caspase inhibitors. Further proteomic analysis revealed that TBM-2-driven methuosis is facilitated by the hyperactivation of the MKK4-p38α axis and the boosted lipid metabolism, especially cholesterol biosynthesis. Pharmacological interventions targeting either the MKK4-p38α axis or cholesterol biosynthesis effectively suppress TBM-2-induced methuosis, highlighting the pivotal role of these mechanisms in TBM-2-mediated cell death. Moreover, TBM-2 treatment effectively suppressed tumor growth by inducing methuosis in a xenograft mouse model of hepatocellular carcinoma. Taken together, our findings provide compelling evidence of TBM-2's remarkable tumor-killing effects by inducing methuosis, both in vitro and in vivo. TBM-2 represents a promising avenue for the development of innovative and effective therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma, one that may ultimately offer significant clinical benefits for patients with this devastating disease.

This paper studies the grain refinement mechanisms of 5A06 aluminum alloy sheets in cold rotary forging (CRF). The results show that the grains are clearly refined from 25.1 µm to 11.8 µm during the CRF process. The grain refinement mechanism can be divided into two modes: (1) The grains with a small Schmid factor (SF) are activated by multi-slip systems, and dense dislocations are segregated along the boundaries of interior regions with different slip systems, which results in a rapidly increasing strain localization along these boundaries. Since the strain localization restrains the coordinate slip deformation between different interior regions, the grains are directly separated into several finer grains. (2) The grains with a large SF are primarily activated by a single slip system, and the dislocation migrates smoothly along most microband boundaries. Then, a more severe lattice rotation causes a transformation to a hard orientation and multi-slip system activation, which contributes to an increase in the rapid misorientation across microband boundaries and thus promotes significant SF grain refinement.

The rocket nozzle is one of the core components to ensure the safe flight of rockets. To overcome the problems of multi-step forming, the occurrence of defects, and severe plastic deformation in traditional technology, a novel forming method named tube upsetting-bulging (TUBG) is put forward. With the support of internal pressure, a tube is deformed with an upsetting and bulging process at the same time. The tube is thickened at the small end and thinned at the large end. A nozzle with sharply varying diameters can be obtained. A theoretical model of TUBG that considers wrinkles and rupture is built. The influence factors of internal pressure during TUBG are discussed. Experiments and simulation works are conducted to analyze the plastic deformation process of TUBG. Results show that mechanical properties and geometrical parameters have an obvious influence on critical internal pressure. The proposed theoretical model can be used to predict a forming zone without wrinkles, rupture, and severe strain values. A well-formed nozzle can be obtained using the predicted forming zone, which verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis. It can be found that TUBG is a novel potential method to fabricate rocket nozzles with high efficiency and quality without defects.

Shrink fitting of forging mold (SFFM) is an effective method for improving mold strength, extending the mold's service life and reducing the manufacturing cost of forging mold. However, due to the asymmetric geometry and complex stress distribution, the precise design of SFFM for the precision forging of noncircular bevel gears is very difficult. In this paper, a new precise design method of SFFM for the precision forging of noncircular bevel gears is proposed, which mainly includes the following five parts. First, a new design method for the mold parting surface-the curved surface parting method-is proposed to design the forging mold of noncircular spur bevel gears. Then, new dimension design methods for the gear mold and shrink rings based on the uniform shrinkage force are proposed. Third, a new design method for the inhomogeneous interference value between shrink rings and the gear mold is developed to provide a precise, uniform shrinkage force. After that, a strength correction method for the shrink-fitted gear mold is proposed to ensure the gear mold and shrink rings have sufficient strength both in the assembly process of the shrink-fitted gear mold and precision in the forging process of noncircular spur bevel gears. Ultimately, finite element simulations and verification experiments are performed to verify the proposed precise design method of SFFM for the precision forging of noncircular bevel gears. The precise design method of SFFM proposed in this paper is not only applicable to the precise design of the high-strength gear mold for noncircular bevel gears, but can also provide a valid reference for the precise design of the high-strength mold for other complicated asymmetric parts.

Objective: To study the extraction process of agarwood active ingredients (AA) and investigate the safety and effectiveness of AA in the treatment of insomnia rats by nasal administration., Method: A β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion compound (a-β-CD) was prepared from agarwood essential oil (AEO), and the preparation process was optimized and characterized. The safety of AA in nasal mucosa was evaluated through Bufo gargarizans maxillary mucosa and rat nasal mucosa models. Insomnia animal models were replicated by injecting p -chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), conducting behavioral tests, and detecting the expression levels of monoamine neurotransmitters (NE and 5-HT) and amino acids (GABA/Glu) in the rat hypothalamus., Results: The optimum inclusion process conditions of β-CD were as follows: the feeding ratio was 0.35:1.40 (g:g), the inclusion temperature was 45 °C, the inclusion time was 2 h, and the ICY% and IEO% were 53.78 ± 2.33% and 62.51 ± 3.21%, respectively. The inclusion ratio, temperature, and time are the three factors that have significant effects on the ICY% and IEO% of a-β-CD. AA presented little damage to the nasal mucosa. AA increased the sleep rate, shortened the sleep latency, and prolonged the sleep time of the rats. The behavioral test results showed that AA could ameliorate depression in insomnia rats to a certain extent. The effect on the expression of monoamine neurotransmitters and amino acids in the hypothalamus of rats showed that AA could significantly reduce NE levels and increase the 5-HT level and GABA/Glu ratio in the hypothalamus of insomnia rats., Conclusion: The preparation of a-β-CD from AEO can reduce its irritation, improve its stability, increase its curative effect, and facilitate its storage and transport. AA have certain therapeutic effects on insomnia. The mechanism of their effect on rat sleep may involve regulating the expression levels of monoamine neurotransmitters and amino acids in the hypothalamus.

The COVID-19 outbreak, a recent major public health emergency, was the first national health crisis since China entered the era of mobile social media. In this context, the public posted many quarantine-related posts for help on social media. Most previous studies of social media during the pandemic focused only on people's emotional needs, with less analysis of quarantine help-seeking content. Based on this situation, this study analyzed the relationship between the number of quarantine help-seeking posts and the number of new diagnoses at different time points in the pandemic using Zhihu, the most comprehensive topic discussion platform in China. It showed a positive correlation between the number of help-seeking posts and the pandemic's severity. Given the diversity of people's help-seeking content, this study used topic model analysis and sentiment analysis to explore the key content of people's quarantine help-seeking posts during the pandemic. In light of the framework of uses and gratifications, we found that people posted the most questions in relation to help with information related to pandemic information and quarantine information. Interestingly, the study also found that the content of people's quarantine posts during the pandemic was primarily negative in sentiment. This study can thus help the community understand the changes in people's perceptions, attitudes, and concerns through their reactions to emergencies and then formulate relevant countermeasures to address pandemic control and information regulation, which will have implications for future responses to public health emergencies. Moreover, in terms of psychological aspects, it will help implement future mental health intervention strategies and better address the public's psychological problems.

Background: Abnormal N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification caused by m6A regulators is a common characteristic in various tumors. However, little is known about the role of m6A regulator AlkB homolog 5 (ALKBH5) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). In this study, we analyzed the influence of ALKBH5 on the stemness of TNBC and the molecular mechanism using bioinformatics analysis and in vivo animal experiments., Methods: RNA expression data and single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data were downloaded from the TCGA and GEO databases. Following intersection analysis, key genes involved in the TNBC cell stemness were determined, which was followed by functional enrichment analysis, PPI and survival analysis. Exosomes were extracted from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC-Exos) where ALKBH5 inhibition assay was conducted to verify their function in the biological characteristics of TNBC cells., Results: Bioinformatics analysis revealed 45 key genes of ALKBH5 regulating TNBC cell stemness. In addition, UBE2C was predicted as a key downstream gene and p53 was predicted as a downstream signaling of ALKBH5. In vivo data confirmed that ALKBH5 upregulated UBE2C expression by regulating the m6A modification of UBE2C and reduced p53 expression, thus promoting the stemness, growth and metastasis of TNBC cells. BMSC-Exos suppressed the tumor stemness, growth and metastasis of TNBC cells and ALKBH5 shRNA-loaded BMSC-Exos showed a more significant suppressive role., Conclusion: Taken together, our findings indicated that ALKBH5 shRNA-loaded BMSC-Exos reduced TNBC cell stemness, growth and metastasis and define a promising strategy to treat TNBC.

New biodegradable aliphatic PLLA-PBA-PLLA copolymers with soft poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) and hard poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) building blocks were synthesized via ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 HNMR) was utilized to confirm the volume fraction of PBA (f PBA ) within PLLA-PBA-PLLA. It was found that a PBA midblock (PBA-mid) within PLLA-PBA-PLLA-s (PLLA-PBA-PLLA triblock copolymer with a short PLLA block length) might display lamellar domain structure. However, PBA-mid within PLLA-PBA-PLLA-l (PLLA-PBA-PLLA triblock copolymer with a long PLLA block length) might locate itself as a nanoscale cylindrical domain surrounded by a PLLA continuous phase. Polymorphic crystals of PBA-mid within the PLLA-PBA-PLLA copolymers were formed after melt crystallization at the given temperatures, which were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis. According to the WAXD and DSC analyses, it was interesting to find that the α-type crystal of PBA-mid was favorable to develop in the lower temperature region regardless of the state (crystallization or amorphous) of the PLLA component. Additionally, when the PLLA component was held in its amorphous state, it was easier for PBA-mid within the PLLA-PBA-PLLA copolymers to transform from the metastable β-form crystal to the stable α-form crystal. Furthermore, polarized optical microscopy (POM) photos provided direct evidence of the polymorphic crystals of PBA-mid within PLLA-PBA-PLLAs.

A follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is widely used in the assisted reproduction and a synthetic peptide corresponding to a receptor binding region of the human (h) FSH-β-(34−37) (TRDL) modulated reproduction. Furthermore, a 13-amino acid sequence corresponding to hFSH-β-(37−49) (LVYKDPARPKIQK) was recently identified as the receptor binding site. We hypothesized that the synthetic peptides corresponding to hFSH-β-(37−49) and hFSH-β-(34−49), created by merging hFSH-β-(34−37) and hFSH-β-(37−49), modulate the reproductive functions, with the longer peptide being more biologically active. In male or female prepubertal mice, a single injection of 200 μg/g BW ip of hFSH-β-(37−49) or hFSH-β-(34−49) hastened (p < 0.05) puberty, whereas the same treatments given daily for 4 d promoted (p < 0.05) the gonadal steroidogenesis and gamete formation. In addition of either peptide to the in vitro cell cultures, promoted (p < 0.05) the proliferation of primary murine granulosa cells and the estradiol production by upregulating the expression of Ccnd2 and Cyp19a1, respectively. In adult female mice, 200 μg/g BW ip of either peptide during diestrus antagonized the FSH-stimulated estradiol increase and uterine weight gain during proestrus. Furthermore, hFSH-β-(34−49) was a more potent (p < 0.05) reproductive modulator than hFSH-β-(37−49), both in vivo and in vitro. We concluded that hFSH-β-(37−49) and especially hFSH-β-(34−49), have the potential for reproductive modulation.

Besides the canonical function in ribosome biogenesis, there have been significant recent advances towards the fascinating roles of the nucleolus in stress response, cell destiny decision and disease progression. Nucleolar stress, an emerging concept describing aberrant nucleolar structure and function as a result of impaired rRNA synthesis and ribosome biogenesis under stress conditions, has been linked to a variety of signaling transductions, including but not limited to Mdm2-p53, NF-κB and HIF-1α pathways. Studies have uncovered that nucleolus is a stress sensor and signaling hub when cells encounter various stress conditions, such as nutrient deprivation, DNA damage and oxidative and thermal stress. Consequently, nucleolar stress plays a pivotal role in the determination of cell fate, such as apoptosis, senescence, autophagy and differentiation, in response to stress-induced damage. Nucleolar homeostasis has been involved in the pathogenesis of various chronic diseases, particularly tumorigenesis, neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic disorders. Mechanistic insights have revealed the indispensable role of nucleolus-initiated signaling in the progression of these diseases. Accordingly, the intervention of nucleolar stress may pave the path for developing novel therapies against these diseases. In this review, we systemically summarize recent findings linking the nucleolus to stress responses, signaling transduction and cell-fate decision, set the spotlight on the mechanisms by which nucleolar stress drives disease progression, and highlight the merit of the intervening nucleolus in disease treatment.

When trains pass through damaged switch rails, rail head damage will change wheel-rail contact states from rolling frictions to unsteady contacts, which will result in impact vibrations and threaten structural safeties. In addition, under approaching and moving away rolling contact excitations and complex wheel-rail contacts, the non-stationary vibrations make it difficult to extract and analyze impact vibrations. In view of the above problems, this paper proposes a variational-mode-decomposition (VMD)-spectral-subtraction (SS)-based impact vibration extraction method. Firstly, the time domain feature analysis method is applied to calculate the time moments that the wheels pass joints, and to correct vehicle velocities. This can help estimate and confine impact vibration distribution ranges. Then, the stationary intrinsic mode function (IMF) components of the impact vibration are decomposed and analyzed with the VMD method. Finally, impact vibrations are further filtered with the SS method. For rail head damage with different dimensions, under different velocity experiments, the frequency and amplitude features of the impact vibrations are analyzed. Experimental results show that, in low-velocity scenarios, the proposed VMD-SS-based method can extract impact vibrations, the frequency features are mainly concentrated in 3500-5000 Hz, and the frequency and peak-to-peak features increase with the increase in excitation velocities.

Bilirubin (BR) is a tetrapyrrolic compound stemming from heme catabolism with diverse physiological functions. It can be oxidized by H 2 O 2 to form several degradation products, some of which have been detected in vivo and may contribute to the pathogenesis of certain diseases. However, the oxidative degradation of BR is complex and the conditions that BR degradation occurs pathophysiologically remain obscure. Neutrophils are known to generate large amounts of reactive oxygen species, including H 2 O 2 , upon activation and they are mobilized to inflammatory sites; therefore, we hypothesized that activated neutrophils could cause BR degradation, which could occur at inflammatory sites. In the present study, we investigated BR degradation by H 2 O 2 and identified hematinic acid (BHP1) and a new product BHP2, whose structure was characterized as 2,5-diformyl-4-methyl-1 H -pyrrole-3-propanoic acid. An LC-MS/MS method for the quantitation of the two compounds was then established. Using the LC-MS/MS method, we observed the concentration-dependent formation of BHP1 and BHP2 in mouse neutrophils incubated with 10 and 30 μM of BR with the yields being 16 ± 3.2 and 31 ± 5.9 pmol/10 6 cells for BHP1, and 25 ± 4.4 and 71 ± 26 pmol/10 6 cells for BHP2, respectively. After adding phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, a neutrophil agonist, to 30 μM of BR-treated cells, the BHP1 yield increased to 43 ± 6.6 pmol/10 6 cells, whereas the BHP2 one decreased to 47 ± 9.2 pmol/10 6 cells. The two products were also detected in hemorrhagic skins of mice with dermal inflammation and hemorrhage at levels of 4.5 ± 1.9 and 0.18 ± 0.10 nmol/g tissue, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the non-hemorrhagic skins. BHP2 was neurotoxic starting at 0.10 μM but BHP1 was not, as assessed using Caenorhabditis elegans as the animal model. Neutrophil-mediated BR degradation may be a universally pathophysiological process in inflammation and can be particularly important under pathological conditions concerning hemorrhage.

In this paper, we present a novel reduced Galinstan-based microfluidic energy harvester, which can converse kinetic energy to electricity from an arbitrary vibration source. Firstly, the wetting behaviors of reduced Galinstan are performed, which shows a robust impact effect on polymer substrates. Moreover, the electric circuit model of the reduced Galinstan-based energy harvester is made and discussed by the use of the EDLCs (electrical double layer capacitors). After modeling, the microfluidic energy harvester with coplanar microfluidic channels is designed and fabricated. Finally, the performance of the microfluidic energy harvester is investigated, which can harvest multi-direction vibration energy. The experiment results demonstrate that the novel reduced Galinstan-based microfluidic energy harvester is suitably and uniquely applied in a complex vibration environment.

During the radial-axial ring rolling (RARR) process of super-large rings, abnormal deformation states such as instability and out of circularity often lead to rolling termination and quality fluctuation of ring products. In this work, an intelligent fuzzy closed-loop control method for RARR process of super-large rings is proposed, i.e., the ring's offset adaptive fuzzy control (ROAFC) based on the regulation of the axial roll's rotational speed and the ring's circularity fuzzy control (RCFC) based on the regulation of the mandrel's feed speed. In addition, a recursive average filtering algorithm is added to smooth the axial roll's rotational speed and the mandrel's feed speed according to the actual situation. Using the ABAQUS/Explicit software and its subroutine VUAMP, the intelligent fuzzy controller of the ring's offset and circularity in the RARR process is designed, and the finite element (FE) model for RARR process of a Φ10 m super-large ring with an integrated intelligent fuzzy control algorithm is established. The variation laws of the ring's offset and circularity error in the RARR process are studied with regard to different control methods such as conventional planning control (CPC), ROAFC, RCFC, and comprehensive control of ROAFC combined with RCFC (ROAFC + RCFC). The results obtained show that, compared with the CPC, the ring's offset is reduced by 84.6% and the circularity error is decreased by 51.9% in the RARR process utilizing comprehensive control of ROAFC + RCFC. The research results provide methodological guidance for realizing the intelligent forming of super-large rings.

The Secchi disk is often used to monitor the transparency of water. However, the results of personal measurement are easily affected by subjective experience and objective environment, and it is time-consuming. With the rapid development of computer technology, using image processing technology is more objective and accurate than personal observation. A transparency measurement algorithm is proposed by combining deep learning, image processing technology, and Secchi disk measurement. The white part of the Secchi disk is cropped by image processing. The classification network based on resnet18 is applied to classify the segmentation results and determine the critical position of the Secchi disk. Then, the semantic segmentation network Deeplabv3+ is used to segment the corresponding water gauge at this position, and subsequently segment the characters on the water gauge. The segmentation results are classified by the classification network based on resnet18. Finally, the transparency value is calculated according to the segmentation and classification results. The results from this algorithm are more accurate and objective than that of personal observation. The experiments show the effectiveness of this algorithm.

Background: We investigated the effect of replacing normal corn (NC) or normal wheat bran (NW) with moldy corn (MC) or moldy wheat bran (MW) on growth, ovarian follicular reserves, and oxidative status. Methods: Sixty-three Landrace × Yorkshire gilts were assigned to seven diets formulated by using MC to replace 0% (control), 25% (25% MC), 50% (50% MC), 75% (75% MC), and 100% NC (100% MC), MW to replace 100% NW (100% MW), and MC and MW to replace 100% NC and 100% NW (100% MC + MW), from postnatal day 110 to day 19 of the second estrous cycle. Results: Feeding the gilts with MC or MW induced a lower average daily gain at days 29−56 of the experiment. Age at puberty remained unchanged, but MC inclusion resulted in a linear decrease in antral follicles with diameter >3.0 mm, and control gilts had a 12.7 more large antral follicles than gilts in the 100% MC + MW treatment. MC inclusion linearly decreased the numbers of primordial follicles, growing follicles, and corpora lutea, associated with a lower anti-Müllerian hormone level in serum and 17β-estradiol level in follicular fluid. MC inclusion decreased the serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factor 1 and its mRNA levels in the liver, combined with higher malondialdehyde concentration and lower total superoxide dismutase activities in serum and liver. Conclusion: Chronic exposure to MC-containing diets caused the loss of follicles, even if levels of deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, and aflatoxin B1 were below the levels allowed by China and Europe standards.

Traditional thickness-prediction methods underestimate the actual dome thickness at polar openings, leading to the inaccurate prediction of the load-bearing capacity of composite hydrogen storage vessels. A method of thickness prediction for the dome section of composite hydrogen storage vessels was proposed, which involved fiber slippage and tow redistribution. This method considered the blocking effect of the port on sliding fiber tows and introduced the thickness correlation to predict the dome thickness at polar openings. The arc length corresponding to the parallel circle radius was calculated, and then, the actual radius values corresponding to the bandwidth were obtained by the interpolation method. The predicted thickness values were compared with the actual measured thickness. The maximum relative error of the predicted thickness was 4.19%, and the mean absolute percentage error was 2.04%. The results show that the present method had a higher prediction accuracy. Eventually, this prediction method was used to perform progressive damage analysis on vessels. By comparing with the results of the cubic spline function method, the analysis results of the present method approached the actual case. This showed that the present method improved the accuracy of the design.

Ultrasonic curing is an effective way to enhance the curing extent of composite material bonding in the aerospace industry. The non-thermal effect of ultrasonic has been revealed to improve curing efficiency. However, the mechanism of the ultrasonic non-thermal effect is still not clear. In this work, a variable activation energy model of ultrasonic curing was established by utilizing the iso-conversional method, including the activation energy of the thermal effect and activation energy of the non-thermal effect. The thermal effect caused by ultrasonic was accurately peeled off. An obvious decrease in activation energy was found from 54 kJ/mol in thermal curing to 38 kJ/mol in ultrasonic curing. The activation energy of the reaction system in ultrasonic curing was substituted into the modified Kamal autocatalytic equation, and the parameters of the ultrasonic curing kinetic model were estimated by means of an ALO algorithm. Further discussion based on in situ FTIR showed that the non-thermal effect of ultrasonic can affect the vibration strength, stability, and chemical bond energy of internal groups, but cannot cause the fracture of chemical bonds. Moreover, frontier molecular orbital analysis showed that the chemical reactivity of epoxy/amine molecules increased and the HOMO-LUMO energy gap decreased from 6.511 eV to 5.617 eV under the effect of ultrasonic.

A microwave photonics method has been developed for measuring distributed acoustic signals. This method uses microwave-modulated low coherence light as a probe to interrogate distributed in-fiber interferometers, which are used to measure acoustic-induced strain. By sweeping the microwave frequency at a constant rate, the acoustic signals are encoded into the complex microwave spectrum. The microwave spectrum is transformed into the joint time-frequency domain and further processed to obtain the distributed acoustic signals. The method is first evaluated using an intrinsic Fabry Perot interferometer (IFPI). Acoustic signals of frequency up to 15.6 kHz were detected. The method was further demonstrated using an array of in-fiber weak reflectors and an external Michelson interferometer. Two piezoceramic cylinders (PCCs) driven at frequencies of 1700 Hz and 3430 Hz were used as acoustic sources. The experiment results show that the sensing system can locate multiple acoustic sources. The system resolves 20 nε when the spatial resolution is 5 cm. The recovered acoustic signals match the excitation signals in frequency, amplitude, and phase, indicating an excellent potential for distributed acoustic sensing (DAS).

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are widely used in aerospace and new energy vehicles due to their high specific strength and flexible design ability. At present, the traditional forming process of CFRP curved surface components has problems of low mechanical properties and long processing time. In this paper, a new method of hot gas forming was proposed to obtain CFRP components. By applying high temperature and high-pressure gas on one side of CFRP, the material was forced to deform and solidify at the same time. A special device for hot gas forming was designed and developed. The curing behavior and mechanical properties of original CFRP plates were studied. The main defects and the corresponding control methods of hot gas forming parts were analyzed by forming spherical parts, and the feasibility of the hot gas forming process was verified. Taking the battery cover plate of a new energy vehicle as the research object, the influence of forming temperature, gas pressure, pressurization rate and other process parameters on the mechanical properties of complex CFRP components were analyzed. The mechanism of both strength and efficiency improvement was analyzed. The results showed that with the increasing of gas pressure, the tensile strength and forming efficiency of the CFRP curved components were improved obviously. Under reasonable forming parameters, the tensile strength of the obtained parts was increased by 37%, and the forming efficiency was increased by 58%. The fiber bundles were distributed more evenly and compactly under the hot gas forming. This showed that the use of hot gas forming had good potential in the preparation of high-performance CFRP parts, which was helpful to improve the processing efficiency and forming quality of CFRP curved parts in the aerospace and new energy automotive fields.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is an economically significant swine infectious agent. A PRV outbreak took place in China in 2011 with novel virulent variants. Although the association of viral genomic variability with pathogenicity is not fully confirmed, the knowledge concerning PRV genomic diversity and evolution is still limited. Here, we sequenced 54 genomes of novel PRV variants isolated in China from 2012 to 2017. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that China strains and US/Europe strains were classified into two separate genotypes. PRV strains isolated from 2012 to 2017 in China are highly related to each other and genetically close to classic China strains such as Ea, Fa, and SC. RDP analysis revealed 23 recombination events within novel PRV variants, indicating that recombination contributes significantly to the viral evolution. The selection pressure analysis indicated that most ORFs were under evolutionary constraint, and 19 amino acid residue sites in 15 ORFs were identified under positive selection. Additionally, 37 unique mutations were identified in 19 ORFs, which distinguish the novel variants from classic strains. Overall, our study suggested that novel PRV variants might evolve from classical PRV strains through point mutation and recombination mechanisms.

In order to suppress the strong clutter component and separate the effective fretting component from narrow-band radar echo, a method based on complex variational mode decomposition (CVMD) is proposed in this paper. The CVMD is extended from variational mode decomposition (VMD), which is a recently introduced technique for adaptive signal decomposition, limited to only dealing with the real signal. Thus, the VMD is extended from the real domain to the complex domain firstly. Then, the optimal effective order of singular value is obtained by singular value decomposition (SVD) to solve the problem of under-decomposition or over-decomposition caused by unreasonable choice of decomposition layer, it is more accurate than detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and empirical mode decomposition (EMD). Finally, the strongly correlated modes and weakly correlated modes are judged by calculating the Mahalanobis distance between the band-limited intrinsic mode functions (BLIMFs) and the original signal, which is more robust than the correlation judgment methods such as computing cross-correlation, Euclidean distance, Bhattachryya distance and Hausdorff distance. After the weak correlation modes are eliminated, the signal is reconstructed locally, and the separation of the micro-motion signal is realized. The success of an autoclave process is related to the temperature characteristics of the mold. An inhomogeneous temperature field in the mold affects the quality of composite parts, which may lead to residual stress, voids, and other manufacturing defects of composite parts. In order to meet high-quality production demands, the temperature field in a mold should be investigated precisely. The temperature distribution in a large frame mold is critically evaluated in this work. Then, a method to control the temperature distribution in a large frame mold is proposed. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the autoclave process is developed to predict the temperature evolution of the large frame mold. The model is validated by experimental results, which shows good agreement with a relative difference of 5.92%. The validated CFD model is then applied to analyze the temperature distribution characters in the mold with different control conditions. The results show that the temperature difference decreases by 13.3% when the mold placement angle is changed from 180 to 168°.

Adhesive bonding is widely used in the joining of metals and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs). Ultrasonic vibration was used to improve adhesive bonding of CFRP/Al alloy joints grafted with silane coupling agent, and the effect of the ultrasound on the bonding was studied. The surface of Al alloy was treated with a silane coupling agent, and then the ultrasonic vibration was applied on the adherend during the adhesive bonding process. The shear strength was tested, and the mechanism was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). It is found that the ultrasonic assisting can further promote the bonding of the Al alloy and the adhesive. For the test joins, the shear strength was increased by 267.50% using the silanization treatment plus the ultrasonic assisting. The ultrasonic assisting promoted the grafted epoxy group to react with the adhesive more sufficiently at the Al/adhesive interface by causing micro-mixing and intensified molecule collision, and thus more chemical bond was formed. Under the ultrasonic action, the interface and the adhesive layer became tighter owing to the impact contact at the interface and the oscillating flow in the adhesive layer. The ultrasonic vibration assisting increased the bonding strength by promoting the chemical bond and improving physical morphology.

Endothelial dysfunction (ED) is an important contributor to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Our previous study demonstrated that sphingomyelin synthase 2 (SMS2) promotes ED. Moreover, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress can lead to ED. However, whether there is a correlation between SMS2 and ER stress is unclear. To examine their correlation and determine the detailed mechanism of this process, we constructed a human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) model with SMS2 overexpression. These cells were treated with 4-PBA or simvastatin and with LiCl and salinomycin alone. The results showed that SMS2 can promote the phosphorylation of lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6) and activate the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and that activation or inhibition of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway can induce or block ER stress, respectively. However, inhibition of ER stress by 4-PBA can decrease ER stress and ED. Furthermore, when the biosynthesis of cholesterol is inhibited by simvastatin, the reduction in intracellular cholesterol coincides with a decrease in ER stress and ED. Collectively, our results demonstrate that SMS2 can activate the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and promote intracellular cholesterol accumulation, both of which can contribute to the induction of ER stress and finally lead to ED.

Atherosclerosis is the pathological basis of cardiovascular disease, whilst endothelial dysfunction (ED) plays a primary role in the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis. Simvastatin has been shown to possess significant anti-atherosclerosis activity. In this study, we evaluated the protective effect of simvastatin on endothelial cells under oxidative stress and elucidated its underlying mechanisms. Simvastatin was found to attenuate H 2 O 2 -induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) dysfunction and inhibit the Wnt/β-catenin pathway; however, when this pathway was activated by lithium chloride, endothelial dysfunction was clearly enhanced. Further investigation revealed that simvastatin did not alter the expression or phosphorylation of LRP6, but reduced intracellular cholesterol deposition and inhibited endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Inducing ER stress with tunicamycin activated the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, whereas reducing ER stress with 4-phenylbutyric acid inhibited it. We hypothesize that simvastatin does not affect transmembrane signal transduction in the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, but inhibits ER stress by reducing intracellular cholesterol accumulation, which blocks intracellular signal transduction in the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and ameliorates endothelial dysfunction.

A combined in-mold decoration and microcellular injection molding (IMD/MIM) method by integrating in-mold decoration injection molding (IMD) with microcellular injection molding (MIM) was proposed in this paper. To verify the effectiveness of the IMD/MIM method, comparisons of in-mold decoration injection molding (IMD), conventional injection molding (CIM), IMD/MIM and microcellular injection molding (MIM) simulations and experiments were performed. The results show that compared with MIM, the film flattens the bubbles that have not been cooled and turned to the surface, thus improving the surface quality of the parts. The existence of the film results in an asymmetrical temperature distribution along the thickness of the sample, and the higher temperature on the film side leads the cell to move toward it, thus obtaining a cell-offset part. However, the mechanical properties of the IMD/MIM splines are degraded due to the presence of cells, while specific mechanical properties similar to their solid counterparts are maintained. Besides, the existence of the film reduces the heat transfer coefficient of the film side so that the sides of the part are cooled asymmetrically, causing warpage., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Circular RNA (circRNA) and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) are known to participate in adipogenesis and myogenic differentiation, but their impact on porcine muscle traits is not well understood. We compared their expressional profiles in the longissimus dorsi muscle of Chinese Huainan pigs (HN, the fat type) and Western commercial Duroc×(Landrace×Yorkshire) (DLY, the thin type) pigs, and 854 mRNAs, 233 lncRNAs, and 66 circRNAs (p < 0.05 and ｜log₂FoldChange｜>1) were found to be differentially expressed. The differentially expressed mRNA and circRNA parental genes were enriched in the Wnt signaling pathway (adipogenesis), the transition between fast and slow fibers (myogenic differentiation), and alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism (pork flavor). The potential lncRNAs/circRNAs-miRNAs-mRNAs regulatory networks shared MYOD1 , PPARD , miR-423-5p and miR-874, which were associated with skeletal muscle muscular proliferation, differentiation/regeneration and adipogenesis. A lytic bacteriophage PHB01 specific for Pasteurella multocida type D was isolated from the sewage water collected from a pig farm. This phage had the typical morphology of the family Podoviridae , order Caudovirales , presenting an isometric polyhedral head and a short noncontractile tail. PHB01 was able to infect most of the non-toxigenic P. multocida type D strains tested, but not toxigenic type D strains and those belonging to other capsular types. Phage PHB01, the first lytic phage specific for P. multocida type D sequenced thus far, presents a 37,287-bp double-stranded DNA genome with a 223-bp terminal redundancy. The PHB01 genome showed the highest homology with that of PHB02, a lytic phage specific for P. multocida type A. Phylogenetic analysis showed that PHB01 and PHB02 were composed of a genus that was close to the T7-virus genus. In vivo tests using mouse models showed that the administration of PHB01 was safe to the mice and had a good effect on treating the mice infected with different P. multocida type D strains including virulent strain HN05. These findings suggest that PHB01 has a potential use in therapy against infections caused by P. multocida type D.

Cancer-specific drug delivery represents an attractive approach to preventing undesirable side effects and increasing the accumulation of the drug in tumors. The surface modification of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with targeting moieties thus represents an effective strategy for cancer therapy. In this study, SeNPs were modified with folic acid (FA), whose receptors were overexpressed on the surface of cancer cells, including human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells, to fabricate tumor-targeting delivery carrier FA-SeNPs nanoparticles. Then, the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded onto the surface of the FA-SeNPs for improving the antitumor efficacy of DOX in human cervical carcinoma therapy. The chemical structure characterization of FA-Se@DOX showed that DOX was successfully loaded to the surface of FA-SeNPs to prepare FA-Se@DOX nanoparticles. FA-Se@DOX exhibited significant cellular uptake in human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells (folate receptor overexpressing cells) in comparison with lung cancer A549 cells (folate receptor deficiency cells), and entered HeLa cells mainly by the clathrin-mediated endocytosis pathway. Compared to free DOX or Se@DOX at the equivalent dose of DOX, FA-Se@DOX showed obvious activity to inhibit HeLa cells' proliferation and induce the apoptosis of HeLa cells. More importantly, FA-Se@DOX could specifically accumulate in the tumor site, which contributed to the significant antitumor efficacy of FA-Se@DOX in vivo. Taken together, FA-Se@DOX may be one novel promising drug candidate for human cervical carcinoma therapy.

Using supercritical nitrogen as the physical foaming agent, microcellular polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites were prepared in microcellular injection molding. The main purpose of this work is to study effects of content of nano-CaCO₃ on the crystallization, mechanical properties, and cell structure of PP nanocomposites in microcellular injection molding. The results show that adding nano-CaCO₃ to PP could improve its mechanical properties and cell structure. The thermal stability and crystallinity enhances with increase of nano-CaCO₃. As a bubble nucleating agent, adding nano-CaCO₃ to PP improves the cell structure in both the parallel sections and vertical sections. The mechanical properties increase first and then decrease with increase of nano-CaCO₃. The mechanical properties are affected by the cell structure, as well. The mechanical properties and cell structure are optimum when the content of nano-CaCO₃ is 6 wt %.

Conventional GPS acquisition methods, such as Max selection and threshold crossing (MAX/TC), estimate GPS code/Doppler by its correlation peak. Different from MAX/TC, a multi-layer binarized convolution neural network (BCNN) is proposed to recognize the GPS acquisition correlation envelope in this article. The proposed method is a double dwell acquisition in which a short integration is adopted in the first dwell and a long integration is applied in the second one. To reduce the search space for parameters, BCNN detects the possible envelope which contains the auto-correlation peak in the first dwell to compress the initial search space to 1/1023. Although there is a long integration in the second dwell, the acquisition computation overhead is still low due to the compressed search space. Comprehensively, the total computation overhead of the proposed method is only 1/5 of conventional ones. Experiments show that the proposed double dwell/correlation envelope identification (DD/CEI) neural network achieves 2 dB improvement when compared with the MAX/TC under the same specification.

Disorders of hepatic energy metabolism, which can be regulated by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, lead to metabolic diseases such as hepatic steatosis and hypoglycemia. Tunicamycin, a pharmacological ER stress inducer, is used to develop an anti-cancer drug. However, the effects of tunicamycin on hepatic energy metabolism have not been well elucidated. Mice were intraperitoneally injected with tunicamycin or vehicle. Twenty-four hours later, hepatic triglyceride and glycogen content and serum lipids profiles were analyzed, as well as the expression of lipogenic and gluconeogenic genes. Tunicamycin significantly induced hepatic a yellowish color and ER stress, as well as increasing serum levels of aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase. Besides, tunicamycin remarkably increased hepatic triglyceride content and suppressed the expression of apolipoprotein B100. In addition, tunicamycin-treated mice had lower serum levels of triglyceride, apolipoprotein B, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Gene expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α was decreased by tunicamycin, but the protein level was increased. Furthermore, blood glucose level and hepatic glycogen content were decreased in tunicamycin-treated mice. Protein kinase B signaling was attenuated in the tunicamycin-treated liver, but the expression and activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and glucose-6-phosphatase were unchanged. This paper reports a novel coaxial cable Fabry-Perot interferometer for sensing applications. The sensor is fabricated by drilling two holes half-way into a coaxial cable. The device physics was described. The temperature and strain responses of the sensor were tested. The measurement error was calculated and analyzed.

Soil erosion has been recognized as one of the major threats to our environment and water quality worldwide, especially in China. To mitigate nonpoint source water quality problems caused by soil erosion, best management practices (BMPs) and/or conservation programs have been adopted. Watershed models, such as the Annualized Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollutant Loading model (AnnAGNPS), have been developed to aid in the evaluation of watershed response to watershed management practices. The model has been applied worldwide and proven to be a very effective tool in identifying the critical areas which had serious erosion, and in aiding in decision-making processes for adopting BMPs and/or conservation programs so that cost/benefit can be maximized and non-point source pollution control can be achieved in the most efficient way. The main goal of this study was to assess the characteristics of soil erosion, sediment and sediment delivery of a watershed so that effective conservation measures can be implemented. To achieve the overall objective of this study, all necessary data for the 4,184 km(2) Daning River watershed in the Three-Gorge region of the Yangtze River of China were assembled. The model was calibrated using observed monthly runoff from 1998 to 1999 (Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency of 0.94 and R(2) of 0.94) and validated using the observed monthly runoff from 2003 to 2005 (Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency of 0.93 and R(2) of 0.93). Additionally, the model was validated using annual average sediment of 2000-2002 (relative error of -0.34) and 2003-2004 (relative error of 0.18) at Wuxi station. Post validation simulation showed that approximately 48% of the watershed was under the soil loss tolerance released by the Ministry of Water Resources of China (500 t·km(-2)·y(-1)). However, 8% of the watershed had soil erosion of exceeding 5,000 t·km(-2)·y(-1). Sloping areas and low coverage areas are the main source of soil loss in the watershed.
