This study presents an innovative method for producing thermosensitive bioink from chitosan hydrogels saturated with carbon dioxide and agarose. It focuses on a detailed characterisation of their physicochemical properties and potential applications in biomedicine and tissue engineering. The ORO test approved the rapid regeneration of the three-dimensional structure of chitosan–agarose composites in a unidirectional bench press simulation test. The diffusion of dyes through the chitosan–agarose hydrogel membranes strongly depended on the share of both polymers in the composite and the molecular weight of the dyes. Glucose, as a nutrient marker, also diffused through all membranes regardless of composition. Biocompatibility assessment using MTT tests on 46BR.1N fibroblasts and HaCaT keratinocytes confirmed the safety of the bioink. The regenerative potential of the bioink was confirmed by efficient cell migration, especially HaCaT. Long-term viability studies showed that chitosan–agarose scaffolds, unlike the agarose ones, support cell proliferation and survival, especially 14 days after bioink extrusion. Experiments in a skin wound model in mice confirmed the biocompatibility of the tested dressing and the beneficial action of chitosan on healing. Studies on vessel formation in chicken embryos highlight the potential of the chitosan–agarose composition to enhance proangiogenic effects. Background: Continuous research on breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) has introduced a focus on surface texturizations and a shift towards smooth breast devices, yet outcomes comparing the complication profiles of differently textured tissue expanders (TEs) remain conflicting. The study aim was to compare the complication profile of a new nanotextured and MRI-compatible TE to micro- and macrotextured TEs and to identify possible predictors for complications. Methods: A retrospective analysis of women undergoing expander-based breast reconstruction after mastectomy between January 2016 and March 2022 was conducted. The primary endpoint was the development of capsular contracture. Possible predictors were analyzed in a mixed-effects model using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). Moreover, a comparison of complications and an evaluation of predictors were carried out. Results: A total of 147 breasts, encompassing 82 nanotextured, 43 microtextured and 22 macrotextured TEs, were analyzed. Breasts with nanotextured TEs were less likely to develop capsular contracture overall (OR, 0.12; 95%CI 0.05–0.28, p < 0.001). Post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) was identified as a predictor for capsular contracture (OR, 4.67; 95%CI 1.86–11.71, p < 0.001). Breasts with nanotextured TEs showed a higher rate of seroma, but lower rates of malposition and pain. Predictors for developing postoperative complications included higher mastectomy weight (p = 0.008). Conclusions: Breasts with nanotextured TEs exhibited the lowest rate of capsular contracture compared to micro- and macrotextured TEs. Hybrid nanocomposites combining biopolymer fibers incorporated with nanoparticles (NPs) have received increasing attention due to their remarkable characteristics. Inorganic NPs are typically chosen for their properties, such as magnetism and thermal or electrical conductivity, for example. Meanwhile, the biopolymer fiber component is a backbone, and could act as a support structure for the NPs. This shift towards biopolymers over traditional synthetic polymers is motivated by their sustainability, compatibility with biological systems, non-toxic nature, and natural decomposition. This study employed the solution blow spinning (SBS) method to obtain a nanocomposite comprising poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), PVA, and gelatin biodegradable polymer fibers incorporated with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated with poly(acrylic acid), PAA2k, coded as γ-Fe2O3-NPs-PAA2k. The fiber production process entailed a preliminary investigation to determine suitable solvents, polymer concentrations, and spinning parameters. γ-Fe2O3-NPs were synthesized via chemical co-precipitation as maghemite and coated with PAA2k through the precipitation–redispersion protocol in order to prepare γ-Fe2O3-NPs-PAA2k. Biopolymeric fibers containing coated NPs with sub-micrometer diameters were obtained, with NP concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 1.7% wt. The synthesized NPs underwent characterization via dynamic light scattering, zeta potential analysis, and infrared spectroscopy, while the biopolymer fibers were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Overall, this study demonstrates the successful implementation of SBS for producing biopolymeric fibers incorporating iron oxide NPs, where the amalgamation of materials demonstrated superior thermal behavior to the plain polymers. In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) has been recognized as a transformative force in the dental industry, with the ability to address escalating demand, expedite production timelines, and reduce labor-intensive processes. Despite the proliferation of three-dimensional printing technologies in dentistry, the absence of well-established post-processing protocols has posed formidable challenges. This comprehensive review paper underscores the critical importance of precision in post-processing techniques for ensuring the acquisition of vital properties, encompassing mechanical strength, biocompatibility, dimensional accuracy, durability, stability, and aesthetic refinement in 3D-printed dental devices. Given that digital light processing (DLP) is the predominant 3D printing technology in dentistry, the main post-processing techniques and effects discussed in this review primarily apply to DLP printing. The four sequential stages of post-processing support removal, washing, secondary polymerization, and surface treatments are systematically navigated, with each phase requiring meticulous evaluation and parameter determination to attain optimal outcomes. From the careful selection of support removal tools to the consideration of solvent choice, washing methodology, and post-curing parameters, this review provides a comprehensive guide for practitioners and researchers. Biomaterials have been the subject of extensive research, and their applications in medicine and pharmacy are expanding rapidly. Collagen and its derivatives stand out as valuable biomaterials due to their high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and lack of toxicity and immunogenicity. This review comprehensively examines collagen from various sources, its extraction and processing methods, and its structural and functional properties. Preserving the native state of collagen is crucial for maintaining its beneficial characteristics. The challenges associated with chemically modifying collagen to tailor its properties for specific clinical needs are also addressed. The review discusses various collagen-based biomaterials, including solutions, hydrogels, powders, sponges, scaffolds, and thin films. These materials have broad applications in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and wound healing. Electrically conductive polymeric materials have recently garnered significant interest from researchers due to their potential applications in the biomedical field, including medical implants, tissue engineering, flexible electronic devices, and biosensors. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is considered the most successful conducting polymer due to its higher electrical conductivity and chemical stability, but it suffers from limited solubility in common organic solvents, poor mechanical properties, and low biocompatibility. An area of tremendous interest is in combining PEDOT:PSS with another polymer to form a blend or composite material in order to access the beneficial properties of both materials. However, the hydrophilic nature of PEDOT:PSS makes it difficult to produce composites with non-polar polymers. In order to overcome these problems, we have specifically designed and synthesized two new sulfonated polyurethanes (PUS) with high sulfonic acid functionality. The two polyurethanes, one water-soluble (PUS1) and one water-insoluble (PUS2), were used to make blends with two commercially available PEDOT:PSS formulations (CleviosTM FET and PH1000). Solvent cast films on glass substrates were made from water-soluble PEDOT:PSS/PUS1 blends while free-standing films of PEDOT:PSS/PUS2 blends were fabricated by compression-moulding. Ethylene glycol was used as conductivity enhancer, which showed an increase in the conductivity by several orders of magnitude in most of the compositions investigated. Additive manufacturing resins used in dental prosthetics may retain uncured monomers post-polymerization, posing potential long-term patient exposure risks. Understanding the biological safety of these materials is crucial, particularly for 3D-printed acrylic-based prosthodontic devices such as occlusal nightguards, complete and partial dentures, and temporary fixed prostheses. This paper reviews the literature evaluating the cytotoxicity of such materials. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a scoping review using the MESH keywords related to population (P), intervention (I), comparison (C), and outcome (O) across databases, including OVID Medline, EMBASE, and SCOPUS. Our search, limited to peer-reviewed English language articles from 2015 to 2023, resulted in 22 papers. These studies, utilizing digital light processing (DLP) or stereolithography (SLA) printing methods, varied in examining different 3D-printed materials, as well as washing and post-curing protocols. The primary experimental cells used were human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) and mouse fibroblasts (L929). There are no statistical differences in biocompatibility regarding different commercially available resins, washing solutions, or methods. Improvements in cell viability were related to an increase in washing time, as well as post-curing time. After the polishing procedure, 3D resin-based printed occlusal devices perform similarly to milled and conventionally processed ones. Our findings underline the importance of appropriate washing and post-curing protocols in minimizing the cytotoxic risks associated with these 3D-printed resin-based devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polymer-based molecular tweezers have emerged as a prominent research area due to their enhanced ability to form host–guest complexes, driven by advancements in their design and synthesis. The impact of the spacer structure on the tweezers is predominant. They can be rigid, flexible, and stimuli-responsive. Herein, a new generation of molecular tweezers is introduced as polymer-based molecular tweezers. The integration of molecular tweezers onto biopolymers has significantly expanded their potential applications, making them promising candidates, especially in drug delivery, owing to their biocompatibility, adaptive structural features, and versatile interaction capabilities. The unique structure of polymer-based molecular tweezers, particularly when integrated with biopolymers, creates a unique nano-environment that enhances their interaction with guest molecules. This minireview focuses on the synthesis and applications of polymer-based molecular tweezers and examines how the incorporation of various spacers affects their binding affinity and specificity. Kefiran is a heteropolysaccharide that is considered a postbiotic and is obtained by kefir grains fermented in cow's milk, while little is known about the donkey milk (DM) variety. Postbiotics are recognised as having important human health benefits that are very similar to probiotics but without the negative effects associated with their ingestion. Donkey is a monogastric animal, as are humans, and when used as an alternative food for infants who suffer from cow milk protein allergies, DM could therefore display more biocompatibility. In this study, the DM kefiran was extracted by ultrasound from kefir grains cultured in donkey milk and fully characterized for its structural and physicochemical properties by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography- Refractive Index (HPLC-RI), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Differential Scanning Calorimeters (DSC) and rheological analyses. In addition, tests were conducted on keratinocytes cell lines and human red blood cells to assess the nontoxicity and haemolysis degree of the polymer. The extraction yield of the DM kefiran was 6.5 ± 0.15%. The FT-IR analysis confirmed the structure of the polysaccharide by showing that the stretching of the C-O-C and C-O bonds in the ring, which formed two bands at 1157 and 1071 cm−1, respectively, and the anomeric band at 896 cm−1 indicates the β configuration and vibrational modes of glucose and galactose. Results were confirmed by HPLC-RI analysis indicating that the ratio glucose/galactose was 1:0.87. Furthermore, the SEM analysis showed a porous and homogeneous structure. The rheological analysis confirmed the pseudoplastic nature of the polymer, while the DSC analysis highlighted excellent thermal resistance (324 °C). Finally, DM kefiran was revealed to have biologically acceptable toxicity, showing a haemolytic activity of less than 2% when using fresh human red blood cells and showing no cytotoxicity on human keratinocytes. The goal of this study was to explore a route for introducing functionalities into agarose-based hydrogels to tune the physical, chemical, and biological properties. Several agarose derivatives were prepared by homogeneous synthesis, including anionic agarose sulfates (ASs), reactive azido agaroses (AZAs), and cationic agarose carbamates (ACs), as well as agarose tosylates (ATOSs) and agarose phenyl carbonates (APhCs). The products were characterized in terms of their molecular structure and solubility behavior. The results suggest that the native gel-forming ability of agarose is retained if the introduced functionalities are hydrophilic, and the overall degree of substitution is low (DS < 0.5). Thus, functional hydrogels from several agarose derivatives could be obtained. The mechanical stability of the functional hydrogels was decreased compared to native agarose gels but was still in a range that enables safe handling. An increase in mechanical strength could be achieved by blending functional agarose derivatives and agarose into composite hydrogels. Antibiotics are successful in promoting health quality by preventing various infectious diseases and minimizing mortality and morbidity all over the world. However, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of multi-drug-resistant bacteria, which pose a serious threat to health care sector. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel antimicrobial agents with versatile characteristics, such as antibacterial activity, low toxicity, wound healing potency, and antioxidant property. In this context, silver chitosan nanoparticles were synthesized in the present study, and their physical characterization revealed that the size of synthesized chitosan–silver nanoparticles was 14–25 nm, with positive surface charge. The functional groups and crystalline nature of the nanoparticles were confirmed by FT-IR and XRD analysis. Further, the silver chitosan nanoparticles showed antibacterial activity against two important clinical pathogens, S. aureus and E. coli. The MTT assay carried out in the present study showed that the synthesized nanoparticles are non-toxic to host cells. A scratch assay on fibroblast cells (L292) demonstrated that the silver chitosan nanoparticles showed promising wound healing activity. A fluorescent DCFH-DA staining assay revealed anantioxidant property of the synthesized nanoparticles. The global socioeconomic challenge generated by wounds requires an understanding of healing and non-healing pathways in patients. Also, the interactions occurring between the wound dressing biomaterials with cells relevant to the healing process have not been sufficiently investigated, thus neglecting the role that wound dressing composition can play in healing. Through the study of six cases of acute surgical wounds, the present work analyses the early (24 h post-surgery) interactions of biochemical and cellular components with (i) Atrauman, a device made of knitted woven synthetic polymeric fibre when used as a primary dressing, and (ii) Melolin, a hydrocolloid engineered as two layers of synthetic and cellulose non-woven fibres when used as a secondary dressing. A pathway towards healing could be observed in those cases where endoglin-expressing cells and M2 macrophages were retained by Atrauman fibres at the interface with the wound bed. On the contrary, cases where the secondary dressing Melolin absorbed these cell phenotypes in its mesh resulted in a slower or deteriorating healing process. The data obtained indicate that a subtraction of progenitor cells by Melolin may impair the healing process and that the analysis of the retrieved wound dressings for biomarkers expressed by cells relevant to wound healing may become an additional tool to determine the patient's prognosis. In recent years, with the advent of a super-aged society, lifelong dental care has gained increasing emphasis, and implant therapy for patients with an edentulous jaw has become a significant option. However, for implant therapy to be suitable for elderly patients with reduced regenerative and immunological capabilities, higher osteoconductive and antimicrobial properties are required on the implant surfaces. Silicon nitride, a non-oxide ceramic known for its excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility, has demonstrated high potential for inducing hard tissue differentiation and exhibiting antibacterial properties. In this study, silicon nitride was deposited on pure titanium metal surfaces and evaluated for its biocompatibility and antibacterial properties. The findings indicate that silicon nitride improves the hydrophilicity of the material surface, enhancing the initial adhesion of rat bone marrow cells and promoting hard tissue differentiation. Additionally, the antibacterial properties were assessed using Staphylococcus aureus, revealing that the silicon nitride-coated surfaces exhibited significant antibacterial activity. Protein therapeutics, vaccines, and other commercial products are often sensitive to environmental factors, such as temperature and long-term storage. In many cases, long-term protein stability is achieved by refrigeration or freezing. One alternative is the encapsulation of the protein cargo within an inert silica matrix (ensilication) and storage or transport at room temperature as a dry powder. In this paper, we test the effect of three commonly used biological buffers on the ensilication, storage, and desilication of the enzyme lysozyme. We show that ensilication protects lysozyme from heat (100 °C for 1 h) and during storage (18 months at room temperature). The choice of ensilication buffer has little effect on the activity of lysozyme after desilication. Our results provide confidence in the continued pursuit of ensilication as a methodology for protein stabilisation and in its compatibility with biological buffers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to investigate the optimization of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) patient-specific implants for mandibular facial bone defects and compare the biocompatibility and osseointegration of machined titanium (Ma), Sandblasted/Large-grit/Acid-etched (SLA) titanium, and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) facial implants. We hypothesized that the facial implants made of SLA titanium had superior osseointegration when applied to the gonial angle defect and prevented the senile atrophy of the bone. Histologic findings of the soft-tissue reaction, hard-tissue reaction, and bone–implant contact (BIC (%) of 24 Ma, SLA, and PEKK facial implants at 8 and 12 weeks were investigated. There was no statistical difference in the soft tissue reaction. Bone was formed below the periosteum in all facial implants at 12 weeks and the BIC values were significantly different at both 8 and 12 weeks (p < 0.05). Ma, SLA, and PEKK facial implants are biocompatible with osseointegration properties. SLA can enhance osseointegration and provoke minimal soft tissue reactions, making them the most suitable choice. They provide an excellent environment for bone regeneration and, over the long term, may prevent atrophy caused by an aging mandible. The green synthesis of ZnO NPs is becoming increasingly valued for its cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. This study successfully synthesized hexagonal ZnO NPs using a combination of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and Thymus capitatus extracts. The use of both extracts significantly improved the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the ZnO NPs. By optimizing synthesis conditions, including ZnCl2 and extract concentrations, hexagonal wurtzite ZnO NPs were produced at room temperature with only drying at 80 °C without high-temperature annealing. The synthesized ZnO NPs exhibited a hexagonal morphology with an average particle size of 160 nm and a crystallite size of 30 nm. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) confirmed the elemental composition of the ZnO NPs, showing a high carbon content (63.9 wt.%), reflecting the presence of phytochemicals from the extracts coated the ZnO NPs surface. The UV–Vis spectrum revealed an absorption peak at 370 nm and a bandgap energy of 2.8 eV due to lattice defects caused by organic impurities. The ZnO NPs demonstrated exceptional antioxidant activity, with a DPPH radical scavenging rate of 95.2%. They also exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with inhibition zones of 25 mm against Bacillus subtilis, 26 mm against Escherichia coli, 24 mm against Salmonella typhimurium, 22 mm against Klebsiella pneumoniae, 21 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, 20 mm against Staphylococcus hominis, and 18 mm against Bacillus subtilis at 200 ppm. Furthermore, significant antifungal activity was observed against Candida albicans, with an inhibition zone of 35 mm at the same concentration. These findings underscore the effectiveness of using combined plant extracts for producing ZnO NPs with controlled morphology and enhanced biological properties, highlighting their potential for various biomedical applications. Mandibular reconstruction for large bone defects is performed with consideration of patients' specific morphology and sufficient strength. Metal additive manufacturing techniques have been used to develop biomaterials for mandibular reconstruction. Titanium artificial mandibles with a lattice structure have been proposed, and the optimal conditions for their strength to withstand mechanical stress around the mandible have been reported. This study investigated the biocompatibility of a titanium artificial bone with a lattice structure fabricated under optimal conditions. The samples were fabricated using metal additive manufacturing. Body diagonals with nodes (BDN) were selected as suitable lattice structures. Dode medium (DM) was selected for comparison. The samples were implanted into rabbit tibial defects and resected with the surrounding bone at two and four weeks. Specimens were evaluated radiographically, histologically, and histomorphometrically. Radiopacity in each lattice structure was observed at two and four weeks. Histological evaluation showed trabecular bone-like tissue inside the BDN compared to the DM at four weeks. No significant differences were noted in the bone volume inside the structures. In the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in the use of biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles (BPNPs) as the carriers for various therapeutic agents in drug delivery systems. BPNPs have the potential to improve the efficacy of numerous active agents by facilitating targeted delivery to a desired site in the body. Biodegradable polymers are especially promising nanocarriers for therapeutic substances characterized by poor solubility, instability, rapid metabolism, and rapid system elimination. Such molecules can be efficiently encapsulated and subsequently released from nanoparticles, which greatly improves their stability and bioavailability. Biopolymers seem to be the most suitable candidates to be used as the nanocarriers in various delivery platforms, especially due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. Other unique properties of the polymeric nanocarriers include low cost, flexibility, stability, minimal side effects, low toxicity, good entrapment potential, and long-term and controlled drug release. An overview summarizing the research results from the last years in the field of the successful fabrication of BPNPs loaded with various therapeutic agents is provided. The possible challenges involving nanoparticle stability under physiological conditions and the possibility of scaling up production while maintaining quality, as well as the future possibilities of employing BPNPs, are also reviewed. Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) are orthodontic mini-implants with remarkable characteristics that, once inserted, present mechanical retention (primary stability) without the process of bone osseointegration. However, interaction with the biological environment may cause changes in the morphology of the external surface of dental TADs. In this study, we used 17 TADs made of aluminum–vanadium titanium alloy, produced by two companies, which were analyzed through optical microscopy after being removed from the patients during orthodontic treatment. We evaluated the changes that appeared on the TADs' surfaces after their use in the biological environment, depending on the morphological area in which they were inserted. In our study, we found changes in the morphology of the implant surface, and especially deposits of biological material in all study groups. On all samples examined after clinical use, regardless of the period of use, corrosion surfaces in different locations were observed. Our obtained results support the idea that the biological environment is aggressive for mini-implant structures, always producing changes to their surface during their clinical use. Background/Objectives: We aimed to assess the antifungal efficacy and impact of a denture cleanser containing Cnidium officinale extract on the surface characteristics of denture base materials, as well as its physical and biological properties. Methods: The experimental denture cleansers were formulated with C. officinale at concentrations of 100 and 150 μg/mL, combined with 1% cocamidopropyl betaine as a natural surfactant. Antifungal efficacy was evaluated using zone-of-inhibition assays against Candida albicans, revealing inhibition zones of 20 ± 1.8 mm for the 100 μg/mL concentration and 23.6 ± 1.6 mm for the 150 μg/mL concentration. Surface property assessments—including hardness, roughness, color stability, and solubility measurements—demonstrated no significant differences compared to the control group. Biological evaluations included the quantification of polyphenol and flavonoid content. Results: The C. officinale-based cleanser showed significant antifungal activity without affecting the hardness, roughness, color stability, or solubility of denture base materials. Biological tests revealed no cytotoxicity and minimal mucosal irritation. Polyphenol and flavonoid contents were quantitatively measured, revealing higher concentrations in the experimental groups, which were correlated with significant antifungal activity. These compounds are known for their roles in disrupting microbial processes and enhancing antimicrobial effects. These findings suggest that the C. officinale-based denture cleanser effectively inhibits C. albicans while preserving the physical properties of denture base materials. Conclusions: This study highlights the potential of C. officinale in denture cleanser formulations, promoting denture hygiene and oral health. Advanced manufacturing techniques such as Additive Manufacturing (AM) have grown rapidly in major industries such as aerospace, automotive, and biomedical device manufacturing. Biomedical industry has benefitted immensely from AM because of its flexibility in design and its rapid production cycle. Powder bed processes are the major production technique for metal-based AM implants. This paper serves as a comprehensive review on the research efforts being made using AM to develop new patient centered medical devices. This review focuses on AM of the most common metals for biomedical applications, Magnesium alloys, Cobalt-Chromium alloys, pure Titanium, Titanium alloys. Several different aspects are discussed including biocompatibility and osseointegration, application of specific metals in different types of implants, their advantages and disadvantages, mechanical properties in comparison to bone, and their production technologies. Hydrogels elaborated from Dasylirion spp. and enriched with grape seed extract (GSE) were investigated for tentative use in dental treatment. Cellulose-GSE hydrogels were elaborated with varying GSE contents from 10 to 50 wt%. The mechanical and physical properties, antimicrobial effect, biocompatibility, and in vitro cytotoxicity were studied. In all the cases, the presence of GSE affects the hydrogel's mechanical properties. The elongation decreased from 12.67 mm for the hydrogel without GSE to 6.33 mm for the hydrogel with the highest GSE content. The tensile strength decrease was from 52.33 N/mm2 (for the samples without GSE) and went to 40 N/mm2 for the highest GSE content. Despite the adverse effects, hydrogels possess suitable properties for manipulation. In addition, all hydrogels exhibited excellent biocompatibility and no cytotoxicity, and the antibacterial performance was demonstrated against S. mutans, E. Faecalis, S. aureus, and P. aureginosa. Regenerative hydrogels from natural polymers have come forth as auspicious materials for use in regenerative medicine, with interest attributed to their intrinsic biodegradability, biocompatibility, and ability to reassemble the extracellular matrix. This review covers the latest advances in regenerative hydrogels used for wound healing, focusing on their chemical composition, cross-linking mechanisms, and functional properties. Key carbohydrate polymers, including alginate, chitosan, hyaluronic acid, and polysaccharide gums, including agarose, carrageenan, and xanthan gum, are discussed in terms of their sources, chemical structures and specific properties suitable for regenerative applications. The review further explores the categorization of hydrogels based on ionic charge, response to physiological stimuli (i.e., pH, temperature) and particularized roles in wound tissue self-healing. Various methods of cross-linking used to enhance the mechanical and biological performance of these hydrogels are also examined. By highlighting recent innovations and ongoing challenges, this article intends to give a detailed understanding of natural hydrogels and their potential to revolutionize regenerative medicine and improve patient healing outcomes. The surface corrosion of magnesium alloys is effectively addressed currently by the creation of a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) ceramic layer. However, oxide film porousness restricts magnesium alloy use. Thus, this work used atomic layer deposition (ALD) to create a TiO2 coating on MAO-coated AZ31B magnesium alloy to plug micropores and increase corrosion resistance and biological characteristics. The samples were analyzed using SEM, EDS, XPS, and XRD to determine their surface appearance, chemical content, and microstructure. Micro-arc oxidation produced a 20 μm oxide coating. The TiO2 film reached 47.41 nm after 400 atomic layer deposition cycles. All corroded samples were tested for corrosion resistance using electrochemical and hydrogen evolution methods and examined for surface morphology. In vitro cell experiments examined biocompatibility. The results indicate that the TiO2 layer sealed the MAO coating's micro-pores and micro-cracks, enhanced corrosion resistance, and preserved surface morphology following corrosion. The TiO2/MAO composite coating is more biocompatible than the substrate and MAO coating. This literature review deals with the electrophoretic deposition of bioactive glass coatings on metallic substrates to produce bone implants. Biocompatible metallic materials, such as titanium alloys or stainless steels, are commonly used to replace hard tissue functions because their mechanical properties are appropriate for load-bearing applications. However, metallic materials barely react in the body. They need a bioactive surface coating to trigger beneficial biological and chemical reactions in the physiological environment. Bioactive coatings aim to improve bone bonding, shorten the healing process after implantation, and extend the lifespan of the implant. Bioactive glasses, such as 45S5, 58S, S53P4, 13-93, or 70S30C, are amorphous materials made of a mixture of oxides that are accepted by the human body. They are used as coatings to improve the surface reactivity of metallic bone implants. Their high bioactivity in the physiological environment induces the formation of strong chemical bonding at the interface between the metallic implant and the surrounding bone tissue. Electrophoretic deposition is one of the most effective solutions to deposit uniform bioactive glass coatings at low temperatures. This article begins with a review of the different compositions of bioactive glasses described in the scientific literature for their ability to support hard tissue repair. The second part details the different stages of the bioactivity process occurring at the surface of bioactive glasses immersed in a physiological environment. Then, the mechanisms involved in the electrophoretic deposition of bioactive glass coatings on metallic bone implants are described. The last part of the article details the current developments in the process of improving the properties of bioactive glass coatings by adding biocompatible elements to the glassy structure. Porous carbon materials from food waste have gained growing interest worldwide for multiple applications due to their natural abundance and the sustainability of the raw materials and the cost-effective synthetic processing. Herein, orange waste-derived porous carbon (OWPC) was developed through a freeze-drying method to prevent the demolition of the original biomass structure and then was pyrolyzed to create a large number of micro, meso and macro pores. The novelty of this work lies in the fact of using the macro-channels of the orange waste in order to create a macroporous network via the freeze-drying method which remains after the pyrolysis steps and creates space for the development of different types of porous in the micro and meso scale in a controlled way. The results showed the successful preparation of a porous carbon material with a high specific surface area of 644 m2 g−1 without any physical or chemical activation. The material's cytocompatibility was also investigated against a fibroblast cell line (NIH/3T3 cells). OWPC triggered a mild intracellular reactive oxygen species production without initiating apoptosis or severely affecting cell proliferation and survival. The combination of their physicochemical characteristics and high cytocompatibility renders them promising materials for further use in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. The present study was focused on the preparation, characterization and application onto cotton fabrics of different topical oil-in-water emulsions based on chitosan, eugenol and copaiba essential oil for potential topical applications. Different amounts of copaiba essential oil (oil phases) and eugenol were used, while the water phase consisted of hamamelis water. The designed formulations were evaluated via optical microscopy and rheological parameters assessment. The textile materials treated with the developed emulsions were analyzed in terms of antibacterial efficiency and in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. The rheological measurements have shown that the emulsions' stability was dependent on their viscosity and structure of the colloidal systems. The emulsions remained stable at temperatures equal to or below 35 °C, but an increase in temperature led to droplet flocculation and creaming. The emulsion-treated textiles exhibited antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and in vivo biocompatibility on the skin of guinea pigs without sensitization effects. Our study revealed that eugenol and copaiba essential oil-based emulsions loaded on cotton textile materials could be promising candidates for developing skin-friendly textiles designed for different topical applications. Background: Tissue engineering represents a promising field in regenerative medicine, with bioresorbable polymers such as polycaprolactone (PCL) playing a crucial role as scaffolds. These scaffolds support the growth and repair of tissues by mimicking the extracellular matrix. Objective: This study aimed to assess the in vivo performance of three-dimensional PCL scaffolds by evaluating their effects on bone repair in rat calvaria and the tissue reaction in subcutaneous implant sites, as well as their impact on major organs such as the kidneys, lungs, and liver. Methods: Three-dimensional scaffolds made of PCL were implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of rats' backs and calvaria. Histological analyses were conducted to observe the bone repair process in calvaria and the tissue response in subcutaneous implant sites. Additionally, the kidneys, lungs, and livers of the animals were examined for any adverse tissue alterations. Results: The histological analysis of the bone repair in calvaria revealed newly formed bone growing towards the center of the defects. In subcutaneous tissues, a thin fibrous capsule with collagenous fibers enveloping the implant was observed in all animals, indicating a positive tissue response. Importantly, no harmful alterations or signs of inflammation, hyperplasia, metaplasia, dysplasia, or hemorrhage were detected in the kidneys, lungs, and liver. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate that PCL scaffolds produced through additive manufacturing are biocompatible, non-cytotoxic, and bioresorbable, promoting osteoconduction without adverse effects on major organs. Polypyrrole (PPy) has attracted widespread attention due to its excellent environmental stability, high conductivity, simple synthesis, good biocompatibility, and reversible redox properties. PPy derivatives not only inherit the advantages of polypyrrole, but also have some unique properties. The side and N-site substitution of PPy can not only yield polymers with good solubility, but it also endows polymers with special functionalities by controlling the introduced functional groups. The performance of copolymers can also be adjusted by the type of monomer or polymerization ratio. In this review, an overview of the different types, main preparation methods, and the application prospects of PPy derivatives reported to date are summarized and presented. Bacterial infection is one of the most problematic issues for human health and the resistance of bacteria to traditional antibiotics is a matter of huge concern. Therefore, research is focusing on the development of new strategies to efficiently kill these microorganisms. Recently, melanin is starting to be investigated for this purpose. Indeed, this very versatile material presents outstanding photothermal properties, already studied for photothermal therapy, which can be very useful for the light-induced eradication of bacteria. In this review, we present antibacterial melanin applications based on the photothermal effect, focusing both on the single action of melanin and on its combination with other antibacterial systems. Melanin, also thanks to its biocompatibility and ease of functionalization, has been demonstrated to be easily applicable as an antimicrobial agent, especially for the treatment of local infections. Skin-friendly textile materials were obtained by applying oil-in-water emulsions based on palmarosa essential oil, chamomile, and calendula tinctures onto cotton fabrics. Different formulations based on these bioactive principles incorporated in collagen as polymeric matrices were prepared and immobilized on a plain weave textile structure from 100% cotton. The functionalized textile materials were characterized in terms of physicochemical, mechanical, antibacterial, and biocompatibility points of view. The pH values of the prepared emulsions were in the range of 4.81–5.23 and showed no significant differences after 4 h of storage. Moreover, the addition of a higher quantity of active principles (palmarosa essential oil and plant tinctures) caused slightly lower values of acidic pH. The electrical conductivity of the obtained emulsions increased with the decrease in the oil phases in the system. The highest values were obtained for the emulsion developed with the smallest volume fraction of active principle—palmarosa essential oil and plant tinctures. The emulsion that contained the least amount of collagen and the highest number of active principles exhibited the lowest stability. The textile materials treated with synthesized emulsions exerted antibacterial effects against S. aureus and E. coli strains and did not affect keratinocyte growth, spreading, and organization, highlighting the biocompatibility of these developed skin-friendly textiles. All artificial materials used for implantation into an organism cause a foreign body reaction. This is an obstacle for a number of medical technologies. In this work, we investigated the effect of high-energy ion bombardment on polyurethane for medical purposes and the reaction of body tissues to its insertion into the mouse organism. An analysis of the cellular response and shell thickness near the implant showed a decrease in the foreign body reaction for implants treated with high-energy ions compared to untreated implants. The decrease in the reaction is associated with the activation of the polyurethane surface due to the formation on the surface layer of condensed aromatic clusters with unbonded valences on the carbon atoms at the edges of such clusters and the covalent attachment of the organism's own proteins to the activated surface of the implant. Thus, immune cells do not identify the implant surface coated with its own proteins as a foreign body. The deactivation of free valences at the edges of aromatic structures due to the storage of the treated implant before surgery reduces surface activity and partially restores the foreign body response. For the greatest effect in eliminating a foreign body reaction, it is recommended to perform the operation immediately after treating the implant with high-energy ions, with minimal contact of the treated surface with any materials. The hydroxyapatite and copper-doped hydroxyapatite coatings (Ca10−xCux(PO4)6(OH)2; xCu = 0, 0.03; HAp and 3CuHAp) were obtained by the vacuum deposition technique. Then, both coatings were analyzed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and water contact angle techniques. Information regarding the in vitro antibacterial activity and biological evaluation were obtained. The XRD studies confirmed that the obtained thin films consist of a single phase associated with hydroxyapatite (HAp). The obtained 2D and 3D SEM images did not show cracks or other types of surface defects. The FTIR studies' results proved the presence of vibrational bands characteristic of the hydroxyapatite structure in the studied coating. Moreover, information regarding the HAp and 3CuHAp surface wettability was obtained by water contact angle measurements. The biocompatibility of the HAp and 3CuHAp coatings was evaluated using the HeLa and MG63 cell lines. The cytotoxicity evaluation of the coatings was performed by assessing the cell viability through the MTT assay after incubation with the HAp and 3CuHAp coatings for 24, 48, and 72 h. The results proved that the 3CuHAp coatings exhibited good biocompatible activity for all the tested intervals. The ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa 27853 ATCC (P. aeruginosa) cells to adhere to and develop on the surface of the HAp and 3CuHAp coatings was investigated using AFM studies. The AFM studies revealed that the 3CuHAp coatings inhibited the formation of P. aeruginosa biofilms. The AFM data indicated that P. aeruginosa's attachment and development on the 3CuHAp coatings were significantly inhibited within the first 24 h. Both the 2D and 3D topographies showed a rapid decrease in attached bacterial cells over time, with a significant reduction observed after 72 h of exposure. Fibres in the micro- and nanometre scale are suited to a broad range of applications, including drug delivery and tissue engineering. Electrospinning is the manufacturing method of choice, but it has some limitations. Novel pressure-driven fibre-forming techniques, like pressurised gyration (PG), overcome these limitations; however, the compatibility of PG with biological materials has not yet been evaluated in detail. For the first time, this limitation of PG was investigated by optimising PG for microbial cell processing and incorporating bacterial cultures into fibrous polymeric scaffolds for sustained release. Multiple polymer–solvent systems were trialled, including polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) 25% w/v, polyethylene oxide (PEO)/PBS 20% w/v, and PVP/ethanol 20% w/v. Rheological studies revealed the surface tension of the PVP/PBS, PEO/PBS, and PVP/ethanol polymer–solvent systems to be 73.2, 73.9, and 22.6 mN/m, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy showed the median fibre diameters to be between 9.8 μm and 26.1 μm, with PVP producing larger fibres. Overnight Bacillus subtilis cultures were then incorporated into the chosen polymeric solutions and processed into fibres using PG. The produced cell-loaded fibres were incubated in LB broth to assess the cell viability of the encapsulated cells. Colony counts post-incubation showed the PVP/PBS 25% fibres resulted in 60% bacterial growth, and PEO/PBS 20% fibres led to 47% bacterial growth, whereas PVP/ethanol 20% fibres did not lead to any bacterial growth. Based on the results gathered during this study, it can be concluded that PG offers a promising way of encapsulating cells and other sensitive biological products while having many notable advantages compared to electrospinning. Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) stands as the foremost contributor to low back pain (LBP), imposing a substantial weight on the world economy. Traditional treatment modalities encompass both conservative approaches and surgical interventions; however, the former falls short in halting IVDD progression, while the latter carries inherent risks. Hence, the quest for an efficacious method to reverse IVDD onset is paramount. Biomaterial delivery systems, exemplified by hydrogels, microspheres, and microneedles, renowned for their exceptional biocompatibility, biodegradability, biological efficacy, and mechanical attributes, have found widespread application in bone, cartilage, and various tissue engineering endeavors. Consequently, IVD tissue engineering has emerged as a burgeoning field of interest. This paper succinctly introduces the intervertebral disc (IVD) structure and the pathophysiology of IVDD, meticulously classifies biomaterials for IVD repair, and reviews recent advances in the field. Recent developments in biomaterials have resulted in the creation of cement composites with potential wound treatment properties, even though they are currently mainly employed for bone regeneration. Their ability to improve skin restoration after surgery is worth noting. The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the ability of composite cement to promote wound healing in a rat experimental model. Full-thickness 5 mm skin defects were created, and the biomaterials were applied as wound dressings. The hybrid light-cured cement composites possess an organic matrix (Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, UDMA, and HEMA) and an inorganic phase (bioglasses, silica, and hydroxyapatite). The organic phase also contains γ-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane, which is produced by distributing bioactive silanized inorganic filler particles. The repair of the defect is assessed using a selection of macroscopic and microscopic protocols, including wound closure rate, histopathological analysis, cytotoxicity, and biocompatibility. Both composites exerted a favorable influence on cells, although the C1 product demonstrated a more extensive healing mechanism. Histological examination of the kidney and liver tissues revealed no evidence of toxicity. There were no notable negative outcomes in the treated groups, demonstrating the biocompatibility and efficacy of these bioproducts. By day 15, the skin of both groups had healed completely. Exploring how neurons in the mammalian body interact with the artificial interface of implants can be used to learn about fundamental cell behavior and to refine medical applications. For fundamental and applied research, it is crucial to determine the conditions that encourage neurons to maintain their natural behavior during interactions with non-natural interfaces. Our previous investigations quantified the deterioration of neuronal connectivity when their dendrites deviate from their natural fractal geometry. Fractal resonance proposes that neurons will exhibit enhanced connectivity if an implant's electrode geometry is matched to the fractal geometry of the neurons. Here, we use in vitro imaging to quantify the fractal geometry of mouse retinal neurons and show that they change during interaction with the electrode. Our results demonstrate that it is crucial to understand these changes in the fractal properties of neurons for fractal resonance to be effective in the in vivo mammalian system. Simple Summary: Natural predators such as the chrysopid Chrysoperla lucasina occur in agroecosystems, where they naturally contribute to containing pest populations. Their biological properties can be leveraged by mass rearing in the laboratory and releasing them in the field, where they can express their predatory potential against pest species. To ensure the preservation of these beneficial species, plant protection products should be harmless to them. Accordingly, the use of biopesticides based on microbial entomopathogens, such as the fungus Beauveria bassiana strain ATCC 74040, is promoted as they are generally regarded as safe to non-target species. However, such safety should be demonstrated case by case. In addition, safety should be ensured for both the wild species and those released for biological control. This study involved experiments including laboratory-reared and wild C. lucasina larvae and determined only slight or no effects of B. bassiana on their survival, immature development, adult emergence, and reproductive potential. These findings highlight the compatibility of the predator and this strain of B. bassiana, emphasising the opportunity for their combined use in environmentally friendly pest management strategies. The need to reduce the impact of plant protection products on agroecosystems fosters the use of augmentative biological control involving the release of beneficial species into the field, the employment of entomopathogenic microbials, and the protection of naturally occurring biocontrol agents. This study aimed to investigate the compatibility of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana with the generalist insect predator Chrysoperla lucasina, in comparative experiments involving a laboratory-reared and a wild chrysopid strain. The larvae of the predators were exposed to different concentrations of fungal conidia up to a concentration of 107 conidia/mL by contact and ingestion. The treated insects showed only slight differences in terms of survival and immature development time compared to the untreated control insects. A significant decrease in the proportion of the male adults of C. lucasina that emerged from the laboratory-reared larvae that were exposed to higher concentrations of the fungus suggested a potentially different susceptibility between the sexes. A slightly lower adult emergence rate was observed in the wild strain, while no significant differences were recorded in the adult reproductive performance. These findings indicate that the B. bassiana strain ATCC 74040, at concentrations commonly used in the field, did not pose a significant risk to C. lucasina and can be safely used in combination with this predator for sustainable pest management. This study evaluates the antiproliferative potential of flavanones, chromanones and their spiro-1-pyrazoline derivatives as well as their inclusion complexes. The main goal was to determine the biological basis of molecular pro-apoptotic activities and the participation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in shaping the cytotoxic properties of the tested conjugates. For this purpose, changes in mitochondrial potential and the necrotic/apoptotic cell fraction were analyzed. Testing with specific fluorescent probes found that ROS generation had a significant contribution to the biological anticancer activity of complexes of flavanone analogues. This study investigates the cytotoxicity profile of superparamagnetic Fe3O4-Ag decorated nanoparticles against human fibroblasts (HFF-1) and breast cancer cells (MCF-7). The nanoparticles underwent comprehensive characterization employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and magnetic assays including hysteresis curves and zero-field-cooled (ZFC) plots. The nanoparticles exhibited superparamagnetic behavior as evidenced by magnetic studies. Cytotoxicity assays demonstrated that both HFF-1 and MCF-7 cells maintained nearly 100% viability upon nanoparticle exposure, underscoring the outstanding biocompatibility of Fe3O4/Ag decorated nanoparticles and suggesting their potential utility in biomedical applications such as drug delivery and magnetic targeting. Furthermore, the study analyzed the cytotoxic effects of Fe3O4 and Fe3O4-Ag decorated nanoparticles to evaluate their biocompatibility for further therapeutic efficacy. Results showed that neither type of nanoparticle significantly reduced cell viability in HFF-1 fibroblasts, indicating non-cytotoxicity at the tested concentrations. Similarly, MCF-7 breast cancer cells did not exhibit a significant change in viability when exposed to different nanoparticle concentrations, highlighting the compatibility of these nanoparticles with both healthy and cancerous cells. The aim of the study was to compare conventional sintering with additive manufacturing techniques for β-TCP bioceramics, focusing on mechanical properties and biocompatibility. A "critical" bone defect requires surgical intervention beyond simple stabilization. Autologous bone grafting is the gold standard treatment for such defects, but it has its limitations. Alloplastic bone grafting with synthetic materials is becoming increasingly popular. The use of bone graft substitutes has increased significantly, and current research has focused on optimizing these substitutes, whereas this study compares two existing manufacturing techniques and the resulting β-TCP implants. The 3D printed β-TCP hybrid structure implant was fabricated from two components, a column structure and a freeze foam, which were sintered together. The conventionally fabricated ceramics were fabricated by casting. Both scaffolds were characterized for porosity, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. The hybrid structure had an overall porosity of 74.4 ± 0.5%. The microporous β-TCP implants had a porosity of 43.5 ± 2.4%, while the macroporous β-TCP implants had a porosity of 61.81%. Mechanical testing revealed that the hybrid structure had a compressive strength of 10.4 ± 6 MPa, which was significantly lower than the microporous β-TCP implants with 32.9 ± 8.7 MPa. Biocompatibility evaluations showed a steady increase in cell proliferation over time for all the β-TCP implants, with minimal cytotoxicity. This study's goal was to evaluate the biocompatibility of two composite cements over a 90-day period by analyzing the individuals' behavior as well as conducting macroscopic and histological examinations and Computed Tomography (CT) scans. We conducted the cytotoxicity test by placing the materials subcutaneously and peri/intramuscularly. Days 30 and 90 were crucial for our research. On those days, we harvested the implants, kidneys and liver to search for any toxic deposits. The biomaterial's uniformity, color and texture remained unaltered despite being in intimate contact with the tissue. Although a slight inflammatory response was observed in the placement location, we observed an improved outcome of the interaction between the material and its insertion area. There were no notable discoveries in the liver and kidneys. According to the obtained results, the biomaterials did not produce any clinical changes nor specific irritation during the research, demonstrating that they are biocompatible with biological tissues. Open fractures and prosthetic joints are prone to bacterial infections, especially those involving biofilms, and are worsened by antibiotic inefficacy and resistance. This highlights the need for targeted treatments against orthopedic infections. LL-37, a human cathelicidin, is known for its antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate LL-37-derived antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) for antibacterial efficacy and toxicity. Several truncated LL-37 analogues were created and tested against 18 bacterial strains, both ATCC and orthopedic clinical isolates, using MIC and MBC assays. Synergy with antibiotics and resistance development were also analyzed, alongside cytotoxicity on NIH-3T3 fibroblasts and hemolytic activity assessments. Six AMPs were synthesized, with FK-16 and GF-17 emerging as the most effective. The MIC values ranged from 4.69 to 18.75 µg/mL and 2.34 to 18.75 µg/mL, respectively, against S. epidermidis and S. aureus, with the MBC values matching the MIC values. Cytotoxicity tests showed no toxicity at concentrations below 75 µg/mL for GF-17 and 150 µg/mL for FK-16. Hemolytic activity was below 1% at 18.75 µg/mL for GF-17 and 75 µg/mL for FK-16. These AMPs showed no synergistic effects with antibiotics and no resistance development. FK-16 and GF-17 effectively removed biofilms, particularly against S. epidermidis. Emollients plus are defined as topical formulations containing active ingredients with no pharmacological effect. They are designed to target multiple mechanisms in AD pathophysiology. The objective of the present study was to assess the efficacy of emollient plus medical device cream by performing a post-marketing surveillance study. It was carried out in cooperation with 88 members of the Polish Association for Atopic Diseases who were diagnosed with AD and voluntarily fulfilled the questionnaire after 14 days of product use. Additionally, the medical device underwent in vitro/ex vivo testing. Cytotoxicity was assessed by in vitro studies: direct MTT assay and indirect Agarose Overlay Assay. An ex vivo EpiDerm™ culture (EPI-200) was used to investigate the irritation potential, and culture medium was collected after 18 h of contact with the skin model to perform a flow cytometric for the analysis of inflammatory cytokines. A dermatological assessment with the local SCORAD was employed to confirm the efficacy of the cream. It was found that 86% of patients with AD observed an improvement in their skin condition during the two-week testing period. In vitro/ex vivo assays confirmed that the product is safe, non-irritant, and does not stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines. With the growing interest in additive manufacturing technology, assessing the biocompatibility of manufactured elements for medical and veterinary applications has become crucial. This study aimed to investigate the corrosion properties and cytotoxicity of porous structures designed to enhance the osseointegration potential of implant surfaces. The structures were fabricated using BJ technology from 316L stainless steel powder, and their surfaces were modified with a DLC coating. The studies carried out on porous metal samples with and without DLC coatings demonstrated low cytotoxicity. However, no significant differences were found between the uncoated and DLC-coated samples, likely due to variations in the thickness of the coating on the porous samples and the occurrence of mechanical damage.
