Abstract

Mattress covers that are impermeable to dust mites may not be effective in treating asthma, according to a study of 1,122 people. Even though the impermeable covers reduced the amount of dust mite allergen in the mattress, it did not improve asthma symptoms or allow patients to use a smaller dose of corticosteroid drugs.

Abstract

Mattress and pillow covers that are impermeable to dust mites may not be effective in treating hay-fever, according to a study of 232 people. Even though the impermeable covers reduced the amount of dust mite allergen in the mattress, it did not improve the patients' hay-fever symptoms.

Abstract

Many parents may have to do more than buy mattress covers that are impermeable to dust mites to help their children who have asthma or hay-fever. Two studies published in 2003 showed that dust mite-impermeable mattress covers were not effective in reducing the symptoms of asthma or hay-fever. Many houses may contain other allergens from cats and other pets, cockroaches, bacteria, and fungi.
