The optic nerve is frequently involved in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, MRI of the optic nerve is considered optional in the differential diagnosis of optic neuropathy symptoms either at presentation or in established MS. In addition, unlike spinal cord imaging in comparable scenarios, no role is currently recommended for optic nerve MRI in patients presenting with optic neuritis for its confirmation, to plan therapeutic strategy, within the MS diagnostic framework, nor for the detection of subclinical activity in established MS. In this article, evidence related to these 3 aspects will be summarized and gaps in knowledge will be highlighted, including (1) the acquisition challenges and novel sequences that assess pathologic changes within the anterior visual pathways; (2) the clinical implications of quantitative magnetic resonance studies of the optic nerve, focusing on atrophy measures, magnetization transfer, and diffusion tensor imaging; and (3) the relevant clinical studies performed to date. Finally, an algorithm for the application of optic nerve MRI will be proposed to guide future studies aimed at addressing our knowledge gaps.

The current document was developed by the working group on the 'application of cardiac magnetic resonance' of the Italian Society of Cardiology to provide a perspective on the current state of technical advances and clinical cardiac magnetic resonance applications and to inform cardiologists how to implement their clinical and diagnostic pathway with the introduction of this technique in the clinical practice. Appropriateness criteria were defined using a score system: score 1-3 = inappropriate (test is not generally acceptable and is not a reasonable approach for the indication), score 4-6 = uncertain (test may be generally acceptable and may be a reasonable approach for the indication but more research and/or patient information is needed to classify the indication definitively) and score 7-9 = appropriate (test is generally acceptable and is a reasonable approach for the indication).

Objective: The interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reports is crucial for the diagnosis of axial spondyloarthritis, but the subjective nature of narrative reports can lead to varying interpretations. This study presents a validation of a novel MRI reporting system for the sacroiliac joint in clinical practice., Methods: A historical review was conducted on 130 consecutive patients referred by 2 rheumatologists for initial MRI assessment of possible axial spondyloarthritis. The original MRI reports were interpreted by the rheumatologists and the radiologist who originally read the images and then categorized according to the novel system. Two musculoskeletal radiologists then reinterpreted the original MRI scans using the new system, and the resulting reports were interpreted and categorized by the same rheumatologists. The quality of the new framework was assessed by comparing the interpretations of both reports., Results: Ninety-two patients met the study criteria. The rheumatologists disagreed on the categorization of the original MRI reports in 12% of cases. The rheumatologists and original radiologists disagreed on the categorization of the initial report in 23.4% of cases. In contrast, there was 100% agreement between the rheumatologists and radiologists on the categorization of the new MRI report., Conclusion: The new MRI categorization system significantly improved the agreement between the clinician and radiologist in report interpretation. Abstract: Since lung magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) became clinically available, limited clinical utility has been suggested for applying MRI to lung diseases. Moreover, clinical applications of MRI for patients with lung diseases or thoracic oncology may vary from country to country due to clinical indications, type of health insurance, or number of MR units available. Because of this situation, members of the Fleischner Society and of the Japanese Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine have published new reports to provide appropriate clinical indications for lung MRI. This review article presents a brief history of lung MRI in terms of its technical aspects and major clinical indications, such as (1) what is currently available, (2) what is promising but requires further validation or evaluation, and (3) which developments warrant research-based evaluations in preclinical or patient studies. Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the performance of the ovarian-adnexal reporting and data system magnetic resonance imaging (O-RADS MRI) score and perform individual MRI feature analysis for differentiating between benign and malignant ovarian teratomas., Methods: In this institutional review board-approved retrospective study, consecutive patients with a pathology-proven fat-containing ovarian mass imaged with contrast-enhanced MRI (1.5T or 3T) from 2013 to 2022 were included. Two blinded radiologists independently evaluated masses per the O-RADS MRI lexicon, including having a "characteristic" or "large" Rokitansky nodule (RN). Additional features analyzed included the following: nodule size/percentage volume relative to total teratoma volume, presence of bulk/intravoxel fat in the nodule, diffusion restriction in the nodule, angular interface, nodule extension through the teratoma border, presence/type of nodule enhancement pattern (solid versus peripheral), and evidence for metastatic disease. An overall O-RADS MRI score was assigned. Patient and lesion features associated with malignancy were evaluated and used to create a malignant teratoma score. χ 2 , Fisher's exact tests, receiver operating characteristic curve, and κ analysis was performed., Results: One hundred thirty-seven women (median age 34, range 9-84 years) with 123 benign and 14 malignant lesions were included. Mean teratoma size was 7.3 cm (malignant: 14.4 cm, benign: 6.5 cm). 18/123 (14.6%) of benign teratomas were assigned an O-RADS 4 based on the presence of a "large" (11/18) or "noncharacteristic" (12/18) RN. 12/14 malignant nodules occupied >25% of the total teratoma volume ( P = 0.09). Features associated with malignancy included the following: age <18 years, an enhancing noncharacteristic RN, teratoma size >12 cm, irregular cystic border, and extralesional extension; these were incorporated into a malignant teratoma score, with a score of 2 or more associated with area under the curve of 0.991 for reviewer 1 and 0.993 for reviewer 2. Peripheral enhancement in a RN was never seen with malignancy (64/123 benign, 0/14 malignant) and would have appropriated downgraded 9/18 overcalled O-RADS 4 benign teratomas., Conclusions: O-RADS MRI overcalled 15% (18/123) benign teratomas as O-RADS 4 but correctly captured all malignant teratomas. We propose defining a "characteristic" RN as an intravoxel or bulk fat-containing nodule. Objective: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients often exhibit varying degrees of cognitive impairments. This study aims to predict cognitive performance in TLE patients by applying a connectome-based predictive model (CPM) to whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) data., Methods: A CPM was established and leave-one-out cross-validation was employed to decode the cognitive performance of patients with TLE based on the whole-brain RSFC., Results: Our findings indicate that cognitive performance in TLE can be predicted through the internal and network connections of the parietal lobe, limbic lobe, and cerebellum systems. These systems play crucial roles in cognitive control, emotion processing, and social perception and communication, respectively. In the subgroup analysis, CPM successfully predicted TLE patients with and without focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBCTS). Additionally, significant differences were noted between the two TLE patient groups and the normal control group., Conclusion: This data-driven approach provides evidence for the potential of predicting brain features based on the inherent resting-state brain network organization. Objectives: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is an excellent diagnostic tool that provides high-resolution images of pancreatic cystic lesions. However, its role in the diagnosis of malignant intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) remains limited and unclear. We aimed to determine the usefulness of this modality for such diagnosis., Methods: Overall, 246 patients who underwent EUS for IPMN after computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from April 2018 to June 2021 were followed up until March 2022. We assessed the added value of performing EUS after CT or MRI for diagnosing malignant IPMN, using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Walls as thick as 2 mm were considered thickened in this study if they were highly uneven., Results: EUS clearly enhanced accuracy in identifying enhancing nodules and thickened walls. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were 0.655 (0.549-0.760) and 0.566 (0.478-0.654) upon CT/MRI but 0.853 (0.763-0.942) and 0.725 (0.634-0.817) when observed using EUS. The combination of nodule size, thickened wall, and main duct size yielded the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.944 [0.915-0.973])., Conclusions: EUS more accurately detects malignant IPMN, as uneven wall thickening and certain nodules cannot be identified with CT/MRI., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Objective: To investigate in an anthropomorphic phantom study the accuracy of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) techniques for fat quantification in comparison with magnetic resonance (MR) proton density fat fraction (PDFF) and single-energy computed tomography (SECT), using known fat content as reference standard., Methods: Between August 2018 and November 2020, organic material-based cylinders, composed of mixtures of lean and fat tissues mimics, iodine, and iron, were constructed to simulate varying fat content levels (0%, 10%, 15%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) in a parenchymal organ and were embedded into an anthropomorphic phantom simulating 3 patient sizes (circumference, 91, 126, and 161 cm). The phantom was imaged with multiecho MR, DECT, and SECT. Magnetic resonance PDFF, DECT fat fraction, and computed tomography (CT) numbers (SECT polychromatic and DECT monochromatic data, virtual unenhanced images) were estimated. Performances of MR PDFF and CT techniques to detect differences in fat content were measured using the area under the curve (AUC). Noninferiority of each CT technique relative to MR PDFF was tested using a noninferiority margin of -0.1., Results: MR PDFF, DECT 140 keV monochromatic data, and fat fraction most closely correlated with known fat content (R2 = 0.98, 0.98, and 0.96, respectively). Unlike SECT and all other DECT techniques, DECT fat fraction was not affected by presence of iodine (mean difference, 0.3%; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.9% to 1.5%). Dual-energy computed tomography fat fraction showed noninferiority to MR PDFF in detecting differences of 5% in fat content in medium-sized phantoms (ΔAUC, -0.05; 95% CI, -0.08 to -0.01), and 7% in large (ΔAUC, -0.04; 95% CI, -0.0 to 0.00) or extralarge sized phantoms (ΔAUC, -0.02; 95% CI, -0.07 to 0.00)., Conclusions: Dual-energy computed tomography fat fraction shows linear correlation with true fat content in the range up to 50% fat fraction. Abstract: This review summarizes the existing techniques and methods used to generate synthetic contrasts from magnetic resonance imaging data focusing on musculoskeletal magnetic resonance imaging. To that end, the different approaches were categorized into 3 different methodological groups: mathematical image transformation, physics-based, and data-driven approaches. Each group is characterized, followed by examples and a brief overview of their clinical validation, if present. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of a 2D dark-blood phase-sensitive late gadolinium enhancement sequence (2D-DBPSLGE) compared with 2D phase-sensitive inversion recovery late gadolinium enhancement sequence (2D-BBPSLGE) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM)., Materials and Methods: A total of 73 patients with a clinical history of ICM were prospectively enrolled. The following endpoints were evaluated: (a) comparison of image quality between 2D-BBPSLGE and 2D-DBPSLGE for differentiation between blood pool-late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), remote myocardium-LGE, and blood pool-remote myocardium; (b) diagnostic accuracy of 2D-DBPSLGE compared with gold standard 2D-BBPSLGE for the evaluation of infarcted segments; (c) diagnostic accuracy of 2D-DBPSLGE for the evaluation of microvascular obstruction (MVO); (d) comparison of transmurality index between 2D-BBPSLGE and 2D-DBPSLGE; (e) comparison of papillary muscle hyperenhancement between 2D-BBPSLGE and 2D-DBPSLGE; inter-reader agreement for depiction of hyperenhanced segments in both LGE sequences. Data were analyzed using paired t test, Wilcoxon test, and McNemar test, and η coefficient and intercorrelation coefficient (ICC)., Results: Image quality was superior for 2D-DBPSLGE for differentiation of blood pool-LGE (P<0.001). 2D-DBPSLGE, compared with 2D-BBPSLGE, showed a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and diagnostic accuracy of 96.93%, 99.89%, 99.71%, 98.78, and 99.04%, respectively. Concerning MVO detection, 2D-DBPSLGE showed a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and diagnostic accuracy of 66.67%, 100.00%, 100.00%, 80.95%, and 86.21%, respectively. 2D-DBPSLGE underestimated the transmurality (P=0.007) and identified papillary muscle hyperenhancement (P<0.001). Both LGE sequences showed comparable interobserver agreement for the evaluation of infarcted areas (2D-BBPSLGE: ICC 0.99;2D-DBPSLGE: ICC 0.99)., Conclusions: Compared with 2D-BBPSLGE, 2D-DBPSLGE sequences provide better differentiation between LGE and blood-pool, while underestimating LGE trasmurality and the presence of MVO.

Study Design: Cross-sectional study., Objective: To analyze altered functional connectivity (FC) in the visual cortex of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)., Summary of Background Data: We previously showed changes in visual cortex neural activity in CSM patients., Methods: Thirty CSM patients and 20 healthy controls were recruited. MR data were collected using a 3.0 T MR. FC of the regions of interest (ROI) (Brodmann areas [BA] 17/18/19/7) were calculated in a voxel-wise manner and compared between groups. Correlation analyses were performed between preoperative Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores and altered FC, as well as between preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and altered FC. Furthermore, the FC where was compared between the preoperative and the postoperative CSM patients in an ROI-wise manner., Results: Increased FC was found between BA19 and the cerebellum inferior lobe; between the left BA7 and bilateral calcarine, right lingual, right fusiform gyrus, and left precuneus (BA17); between the left BA7 and right fusiform gyrus and right inferior occipital gyrus (right BA19); and between the right BA7 and right superior lobe of cerebellum (right BA19) in CSM patients (P < 0.05). A negative correlation was found between JOA score and FC of the left and right BA19, and a positive correlation was found between the BCVA and FC of the left and right BA7 (P < 0.05). ROI analysis demonstrated statistically significant FC differences in between the preoperative and the postoperative CSM patients (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: FC changes were present in the visual cortex of CSM patients, which negatively correlated with preoperative JOA scores and positively correlated with preoperative BCVA. Significant recovery of FC in the visual cortex was detected in CSM patients postoperatively., Level of Evidence: 4.

The era of modern oncology incorporates an ever-evolving personalized approach to hematological malignancies and solid tumors. As a result, patient survival rates have, in part, substantially improved, depending on the specific type of underlying malignancy. However, systemic therapies may come along with potential cardiotoxic effects resulting in heart failure with increased morbidity and mortality. Ultimately, patients may survive their malignancy but die as a result of cancer treatment. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging has long been in use for the assessment of function and tissue characteristics in patients with various nonischemic cardiac diseases. Besides an introductory overview on the general definition of cardiotoxicity including potential underlying mechanisms, this review provides insight into the application of various cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging techniques in the setting of cancer therapy-related cardiac and vascular toxicity. Early identification of cardiotoxic effects may allow for on-time therapy adjustment and/or cardioprotective measures to avoid subsequent long-term heart failure with increased mortality.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of single-shot 2-dimensional multislice late gadolinium enhancement (2D-MSLGE) compared with gold standard single-slice 2D inversion recovery segmented gradient echo (2D-SSLGE)., Materials and Methods: Sixty-seven patients prospectively underwent clinically indicated cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging and were enrolled. The image quality was assessed using a 4-point scale. Segments positive for LGE were classified as ischemic or nonischemic for 2D-MSLGE and 2D-SSLGE. Interobserver and intraobserver variability was assessed for both sequences by 2 readers. The endpoints were as follows: (a) detection of myocardial segments involved by LGE and (b) classification of LGE as ischemic and nonischemic pattern. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and diagnostic accuracy value were calculated for the 2 endpoints., Results: 2D-MSLGE and 2D-SSLGE were successfully performed in all patients with comparable image quality (1.56±0.59 vs. 1.54±0.58, P=0.84). For the overall population, 2D-MSLGE correctly identified 1093 of 1139 myocardial segments positive for LGE (96%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 95%-97%), as compared with 2D-SSLGE. Similarly, 2D-MSLGE correctly identified 1128 of 1139 (99%; 95% CI: 98%-99%) and 1108 of 1139 (97%; 95% CI: 96%-98%) of nonischemic and ischemic LGE patterns.Interobserver and intraobserver variability for quantification of LGE using 2D-MSLGE was 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. The acquisition time was shorter for 2D-MSLGE as compared with 2D-SSLGE (2.0±0.5 vs. 6.0±2.0 min, P: 0.01)., Conclusions: As compared with 2D-SSLGE, 2D-MSLGE is a reliable tool in both ischemic and nonischemic cardiac disease; it is associated with shorter scan times without the need for prolonged breath holding and may be beneficial for those with dysrhythmia.

Study Design: Population-based cross-sectional study., Objective: The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of changes in muscle morphology in patients with chronic idiopathic neck pain (CINP) and chronic whiplash-associated disorder (CWAD)., Summary of Background Data: Worldwide, neck pain (NP) is a common health problem with high socioeconomic burden. A high percentage of these patients evolves toward chronic symptoms. Efficacy of treatments for these complaints remains variable. In current literature, changes in muscle morphology (muscle fat infiltration and cross-sectional area) have been reported in patients with NP, both CWAD and CINP. However, no strong conclusions could be made., Methods: In this study, magnetic resonance imaging was used to obtain data on muscle morphology from 14 cervical flexor and extensor muscles in 117 female subjects with NP (CWAD = 37; CINP = 45) and healthy controls (HC = 35)., Results: The CWAD group had a significantly larger muscle fat infiltration in some extensor (semispinalis and splenius capitis, trapezius, obliquus capitis inferior) and flexor (sternocleidomastoid) muscles compared to the CINP and/or HC group. A significantly larger (muscle) cross-sectional area was found in some extensor (levator scapulae, semispinalis capitis, trapezius) and flexor (longus colli, longus capitis, sternocleidomastoid) muscles in the HC group compared to the CINP and/or CWAD group. No clear associations were found between group differences and factors as pain duration, kinesiophobia, and disability., Conclusion: The results in this study suggest changes in muscle morphology in both NP cohorts. These results show some similarities with earlier findings in this research domain. Purpose of Review: To explore the recent advances and utility of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) in the diagnosis and risk-stratification of prostate cancer., Recent Findings: Low-risk, clinically insignificant prostate cancer has a decreased risk of morbidity or mortality. Meanwhile, patients with intermediate and high-risk prostate cancer may significantly benefit from interventions like radiation or surgery. To appropriately risk stratify these patients, MRI has emerged as the imaging modality in the last decade to assist in defining prostate cancer significance, location, and biologic aggressiveness. Traditional 12-core transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy is associated with over-detection, and ultimately over-treatment of clinically insignificant disease, and the under-detection of clinically significant disease. Biopsy accuracy is improved with MRI-guided targeted biopsy and with the use of standardized risk stratification imaging score systems. Cancer detection accuracy is further improved with combined biopsy techniques that include both systematic and MRI-targeted biopsy that aid in detection of MRI-invisible lesions., Summary: mpMRI is an area of expanding innovation that continues to refine the diagnostic accuracy of prostate biopsies. Objective: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) with its new quantitative mapping techniques has proved to be an essential diagnostic tool for detecting myocardial injury associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. This systematic review sought to assess the important imaging features on CMR in patients diagnosed with COVID-19., Materials and Methods: We performed a systematic literature review within the PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and WHO databases for articles describing the CMR findings in COVID-19 patients., Results: A total of 34 studies comprising 199 patients were included in the final qualitative synthesis. Of the CMRs 21% were normal. Myocarditis (40.2%) was the most prevalent diagnosis. T1 (109/150; 73%) and T2 (91/144; 63%) mapping abnormalities, edema on T2/STIR (46/90; 51%), and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) (85/199; 43%) were the most common imaging findings. Perfusion deficits (18/21; 85%) and extracellular volume mapping abnormalities (21/40; 52%), pericardial effusion (43/175; 24%), and pericardial LGE (22/100; 22%) were also seen. LGE was most commonly seen in the subepicardial location (81%) and in the basal-mid part of the left ventricle in inferior segments. In most of the patients, ventricular functions were normal. Kawasaki-like involvement with myocardial edema without necrosis/LGE (4/6; 67%) was seen in children., Conclusion: CMR is useful in assessing the prevalence, mechanism, and extent of myocardial injury in COVID-19 patients. Myocarditis is the most common imaging diagnosis, with the common imaging findings being mapping abnormalities and myocardial edema on T2, followed by LGE. Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a long-standing challenge. We advocate that the origin of the problem is the simplification applied in commonly used models of the MRI signal relation to the target parameters of biological tissues. Two research fields are briefly reviewed as ways to respond to the challenge of quantitative MRI, both experiencing an exponential growth right now. Microstructure MRI strives to build physiology-based models from cells to signal and, given the signal, back to the cells again. Magnetic resonance fingerprinting aims at efficient simultaneous determination of multiple signal parameters. The synergy of these yet disjoined approaches promises truly quantitative MRI with specific target-oriented diagnostic tools rather than universal imaging methods.

Objectives: Spiral magnetic resonance imaging acquisition may enable improved image quality and higher scan speeds than Cartesian trajectories. We tested the performance of four 3D T1-weighted (T1w) TFE sequences (magnetization-prepared gradient echo magnetic resonance sequence) with isotropic spatial resolution for brain imaging at 1.5 T in a clinical patient cohort based on qualitative and quantitative image quality metrics. Two prototypical spiral TFE sequences (spiral 1.0 and spiral 0.85) and a Cartesian compressed sensing technology accelerated TFE sequence (CS 2.5; acceleration factor of 2.5) were compared with a conventional (reference standard) Cartesian parallel imaging accelerated TFE sequence (SENSE; acceleration factor of 1.8)., Materials and Methods: The SENSE (5:52 minutes), CS 2.5 (3:17 minutes), and spiral 1.0 (2:16 minutes) sequences all had identical spatial resolutions (1.0 mm). The spiral 0.85 (3:47 minutes) had a higher spatial resolution (0.85 mm). The 4 TFE sequences were acquired in 41 patients (20 with and 21 without contrast media). Three readers rated qualitative image quality (12 categories) and selected their preferred sequence for each patient. Two readers performed quantitative analysis whereby 6 metrics were derived: contrast-to-noise ratio for white and gray matter (CNRWM/GM), contrast ratio for gray matter-CSF (CRGM/CSF), and white matter-CSF (CRWM/CSF); and coefficient of variations for gray matter (CVGM), white matter (CVWM), and CSF (CVCSF). Friedman tests with post hoc Nemenyi tests, exact binomial tests, analysis of variance with post hoc Dunnett tests, and Krippendorff alphas were computed., Results: Concerning qualitative analysis, the CS 2.5 sequence significantly outperformed the SENSE in 4/1 (with/without contrast) categories, whereas the spiral 1.0 and spiral 0.85 showed significantly improved scores in 10/9and 7/7 categories, respectively (P's < 0.001-0.039). The spiral 1.0 was most frequently selected as the preferred sequence (reader 1, 10/15 times; reader 2, 9/12 times; reader 3, 11/13times [with/without contrast]). Interreader agreement ranged from substantial to almost perfect (alpha = 0.615-0.997). Concerning quantitative analysis, compared with the SENSE, the CS 2.5 had significantly better scores in 2 categories (CVWM, CVCSF) and worse scores in 2 categories (CRGM/CSF, CRWM/CSF), the spiral 1.0 had significantly improved scores in 4 categories (CNRWM/GM, CRGM/CSF, CRWM/CSF, CVWM), and the spiral 0.85 had significantly better scores in 2 categories (CRGM/CSF, CRWM/CSF)., Conclusions: Spiral T1w TFE sequences may deliver high-quality clinical brain imaging, thus matching the performance of conventional parallel imaging accelerated T1w TFEs. Imaging can be performed at scan times as short as 2:16 minutes per sequence (61.4% scan time reduction compared with SENSE). Optionally, spiral imaging enables increased spatial resolution while maintaining the scan time of a Cartesian-based acquisition schema.

Purpose: Although transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is routinely applied in neuroscience and clinical settings, not much is known about its effects on brain networks. Therefore, this pilot study was set up using repetitive navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) to explore frequency-dependent stimulation effects on an intranetwork and internetwork level., Methods: Six healthy subjects (median age: 23.5 years) underwent two rTMS sessions (1 and 10 Hz), 7 days apart, and prestimulation and poststimulation rs-fMRI. Repetitive navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation was delivered to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, with the exact stimulation target being determined by independent component analysis. Alterations of functional connectivity strength were evaluated using seed-based correlation analyses within and between the salience network, central executive network, and posterior and anterior default mode network., Results: Low-frequency rTMS resulted in significant intranetwork alterations only for the anterior default mode network and primarily within the left hemisphere. In contrast, high-frequency rTMS led to changes within all four networks of interest. Moreover, the posterior and anterior default mode network largely showed opposite effects to rTMS, and the anterior default mode network was rather isolated from the other networks, which was especially true for low-frequency rTMS. Changes in functional connectivity strength because of low-frequency rTMS were even detectable 7 days after stimulation., Conclusions: This is one of the first studies using neuronavigated TMS with independent component analysis-based target selection to explore frequency-dependent stimulation effects in a combined rTMS-fMRI approach. Future studies including higher subject numbers may define the underlying mechanisms for the different responses to low- and high-frequency rTMS.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare bone imaging between ultrashort echo-time (UTE) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) as the reference standard in patients with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ)., Materials and Methods: A 1-year retrospective, blinded, and randomized qualitative analysis of UTE MR images and CBCT from 19 patients with clinically diagnosed MRONJ was performed by 2 independent radiologists. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw imaging hallmarks such as osteolysis, periosteal thickening, and medullary osteosclerosis were rated visually (0 and 1 to 3 for normal and mild to severe changes) for defined anatomic regions of the jaw. In addition, segmentation of these regions was performed on coregistered MR/CBCT images for the following quantitative comparison of signal intensity (SI) on MR and gray values (GVs) on CBCT images. Interreader/modality agreement (Cohen kappa), standard testing for significant differences of (non)parametric values, and Pearson correlation of signal intensity/GV were used for statistical analysis., Results: The anterior corpus of the mandible was most often affected by MRONJ (P < 0.001). Overall, interreader agreement of qualitative MRONJ hallmark scores was almost perfect (κ = 0.81) and without significant differences between modalities (κ = 0.81 vs 0.82, CBCT vs MR, respectively). Intermodality agreement for qualitative gradings was substantial for both readers (κ = 0.77 and 0.70). Signal intensity/GV in MRONJ-affected areas differed significantly from healthy bone (P < 0.001) as well as correlation significantly between modalities (r = -0.77; P < 0.001)., Conclusions: Qualitative assessment of MRONJ with radiation-free UTE MR imaging is comparable to reference standard CBCT. Quantitative measurements of both modalities significantly distinguish diseased from normal bone with strong correlations among the quantitative values in both modalities.

Study Design: Experimental animal study., Objective: To investigate the interaction between magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGRs) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)., Summary of Background Data: Growing rod treatment through serial operations results in adverse effects on the patient and high treatment costs. MCGRs can be lengthened noninvasively in an outpatient setting and with lower treatment costs. When MRI investigation is required, the interaction between MCGRs and MRI is an issue of concern in patients with MCGRs. This study investigated MRI compatibility of MCGRs in an in vivo setting., Methods: The study was conducted on three sheep. A standard posterior approach was used. One polyaxial pedicle screw at the ends was placed. Two sheep were instrumented unilaterally and one bilaterally with MCGRs. Temperature change was measured using MR-compatible sensors. Thoracic and lumbar MRIs were obtained using a 0.3 T MRI unit. MRI waves were applied for 45 minutes and temperature changes were recorded every 3 minutes. The lengths of the MCGRs were measured and anteroposterior and lateral spine radiographs were obtained pre- and postoperatively., Results: No displacement in the positions of the MCGRs occurred. The lengths of the MCGRs did not change compared with the preoperative length. The ability of the MCGRs to elongate was not impaired after MRI scanning. There was a mean increase in the temperature of the MCGRs by 1.45°C (0.5-2.4°C). The MCGRs had a strong scattering effect on MRI of the related segments., Conclusion: This study indicated that lower magnet MRI is safe in an animal model with MCGRs, with no displacement of the rods and no changes in their length, no significant heating, and no adverse effects on the lengthening mechanism but with a significant scattering effect on visualization of the surrounding tissues. Objectives: In this paper, we look at how to design and build a system to find tumors using 2 Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models. With the help of digital image processing and deep Learning, we can make a system that automatically diagnoses and finds different diseases and abnormalities. The tumor detection system may include image enhancement, segmentation, data enhancement, feature extraction, and classification. These options are set up so that the CNN model can give the best results., Methods: During the training phase, the learning rate is used to change the weights and bias. The learning rate also changes the weights. One Epoch is when all of the training images are shown to the model. As the training data may be very large, the data in each epoch are split into batches. Every epoch has a training session and a test session. After each epoch, the weights are changed based on how fast the CNN is learning. This is done with the help of optimization algorithms. The suggested technique uses the anticipated mean intersection over union value to identify failure instances in addition to forecasting the mean intersection over union., Results: This paper talks about how to separate brain tumors from magnetic resonance images of patients taken from "Brain web." Using basic ideas of digital image processing, magnetic resonance images are used to extract and find tumors using a hybrid method. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is applied with the help of MATLAB. In medical image processing, brain tumor segmentation is an important task. The goal of this paper is to look at different ways to divide brain tumors using magnetic resonance imaging. Recently, automatic segmentation using deep learning methods has become popular because these methods get the best results and are better at solving this problem than others. Deep learning methods can also be used to process and evaluate large amounts of magnetic resonance imaging image data quickly and objectively., Conclusions: A classification method based on a convolution neural network is also added to the proposed scheme to make it more accurate and cut down on the amount of time it takes to do the calculations. Objective: Exposure to repetitive sports-related concussions or (sub)concussive head trauma may lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Which impact (heading or concussion) poses the greatest risk of CTE development in soccer players? Design: Narrative review. Setting: Teaching hospital and University of Applied sciences. Patients: A literature search (PubMed) was conducted for neuropathologic studies in the period 2005-December 2022, investigating soccer players with dementia and a CTE diagnosis, limited to English language publications. 210 papers were selected for final inclusion, of which 7 papers described 14 soccer players. Assessment: Magnetic resonance imaging studies in soccer players show that lifetime estimates of heading numbers are inversely correlated with cortical thickness, grey matter volume, and density of the anterior temporal cortex. Using diffusion tensor imaging–magnetic resonance imaging, higher frequency of headings—particularly with rotational accelerations—are associated with impaired white matter integrity. Serum neurofilament light protein is elevated after heading. Main Outcome Measures: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy pathology, history of concussion, heading frequency. Results: In 10 of 14 soccer players, CTE was the primary diagnosis. In 4 cases, other dementia types formed the primary diagnosis and CTE pathology was a concomitant finding. Remarkably, 6 of the 14 cases had no history of concussion, suggesting that frequent heading may be a risk for CTE in patients without symptomatic concussion. Rule changes in heading duels, management of concussion during the game, and limiting the number of high force headers during training are discussed. Conclusions: Data suggest that heading frequency and concussions are associated with higher risk of developing CTE in (retired) soccer players. However based on this review of only 14 players, questions persist as to whether or not heading is a risk factor for CTE or long-term cognitive decline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids (CLIPPERS) is still a rare autoimmune disease in the world. In recent years, there are more and more reports about the clinical manifestations of CLIPPERS, but the specific etiology and pathogenesis are not clear. In this paper, by collating the literature reported in recent years, in the reported effective treatment cases, we found the current hypothesis about the pathogenesis of CLIPPERS. Three pathogenesis hypotheses: organ-specific autoimmunity; virus infection affects autoimmunity; and helper T lymphocyte 17 mediates autoimmunity. Although it is hypothetical, it is expected to further clarify the pathogenesis, evolution characteristics, and treatment of CLIPPERS, so as to provide a reference for further understanding of the disease. In the future, more observations and studies are needed to further verify the feasibility of the hypothesis. This article expands on atypical clinical manifestations and summarizes treatment options. Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders affecting up to 11.5% of the general global population. The brain-gut axis has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of IBS. Several studies confirmed that intrinsic brain abnormalities existed in patients with IBS. But, studies of abnormal regional homogeneity (ReHo) in IBS have reported inconsistent results. The objective of this protocol is to conduct a meta-analysis using the Seed-based d mapping software package to identify the most consistent and replicable findings of ReHo in IBS patients., Method: We will search the following three electronic databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science. The primary outcome will include the peak coordinates and effect sizes of differences in ReHo between patients with IBS and healthy controls from each dataset. The secondary outcomes will be the effects of age, illness severity, illness duration, and scanner field strength. The SDM approach was used to conduct voxel-wise meta-analysis. Whole-brain voxel-based jackknife sensitivity analysis was performed to conduct jackknife sensitivity analysis. Rationale: Anti-IgLON5 disease was first described as a progressive antibody-associated encephalopathy, with multiple non-specific clinical symptoms including sleep dysfunction, bulbar symptoms, progressive supranuclear palsy-like syndrome, cognitive impairment, and a variety of movement disorders. This newly discovered disease presents with unremarkable or unspecific brain magnetic resonance imagings (MRI), and have poor responsiveness to immunotherapy., Patient Concerns: In this case, a 37-year-old man presented with 4-day history of gait instability, dysarthria, and oculomotor abnormalities. Background: Over the past 100 years, many procedures have been developed for correcting restrictive thoracic deformities which cause thoracic insufficiency syndrome. However, none of them have been assessed by a robust metric incorporating thoracic dynamics. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between radiographic spinal curve and lung volumes derived from thoracic dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). Our central hypothesis is that different anteroposterior major spinal curve types induce different restrictions on the left and right lungs and their dynamics., Methods: Retrospectively, we included 25 consecutive patients with thoracic insufficiency syndrome (14 neuromuscular, 7 congenital, 4 other) who underwent vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib surgery and received preimplantation and postimplantation thoracic dMRI for clinical care. We measured thoracic and lumbar major curves by the Cobb measurement method from anteroposterior radiographs and classified the curves as per Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-defined curve types. From 4D dMRI images, we derived static volumes and tidal volumes of left and right lung, along with left and right chest wall and left and right diaphragm tidal volumes (excursions), and analyzed their association with curve type and major curve angles., Results: Thoracic and lumbar major curve angles ranged from 0 to 136 and 0 to 116 degrees, respectively. A dramatic postoperative increase in chest wall and diaphragmatic excursion was seen qualitatively. All components of volume increased postoperatively by up to 533%, with a mean of 70%. As the major curve, main thoracic curve (MTC) was associated with higher tidal volumes (effect size range: 0.7 to 1.0) than thoracolumbar curve (TLC) in preoperative and postoperative situation. Neither MTC nor TLC showed any meaningful correlation between volumes and major curve angles preoperatively or postoperatively. Moderate correlations (0.65) were observed for specific conditions like volumes at end-inspiration or end-expiration., Conclusions: The relationships between component tidal volumes and the spinal curve type are complex and are beyond intuitive reasoning and guessing. TLC has a much greater influence on restricting chest wall and diaphragm tidal volumes than MTC. Malignant gliomas constitute a smaller portion of brain tumors in children compared with adults. Nevertheless, they can be devastating tumors with poor prognosis. Recent advances and improved understanding of the genetic and molecular characterization of pediatric brain tumors, including those of malignant gliomas, have led to the reclassification of many pediatric brain tumors and new entities have been defined. In this paper, we will present some of the more recent characterization and pertinent changes in pediatric high-grade gliomas, along with the conventional and advanced imaging features associated with these entities. Implications of the recent changes in pediatric malignant glioma classifications will also be discussed.

Background and Objective: Ischemic stroke is a foremost cause for disability and death worldwide. This study is conducted in order to compare the diagnostic values between transcranial Doppler ultrasound (ultrasonography), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients suffering from ischemic stroke by performing a network meta-analysis., Methods: We made use of Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase in order to obtain literature and papers. The combination analysis of both direct and indirect evidence in terms of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy was conducted so as to assess the odds ratios (ORs) and surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) values of the seven different imaging methods. These imaging techniques include ultrasonography, computed tomography (traditional CT, computed tomography angiography [CTA], computed tomography perfusion [CTP]), and MRI (traditional MRI, diffusion-weighted imaging [DWI], magnetic resonance angiography), in order to properly diagnose ischemic stroke patients., Results: Thirteen eligible diagnostic trials were enrolled into this network meta-analysis. The results of the traditional meta-analysis showed that among CT methods, CTP showed higher sensitivity, NPV, and accuracy; among MRI methods, DWI had relatively higher sensitivity, NPV, and accuracy. The results of network meta-analysis showed that DWI had relatively higher sensitivity, NPV, and accuracy when compared with traditional CT, CTA, magnetic resonance angiography and traditional MRI. CTP showed higher SUCRA among CT methods while DWI showed higher SUCRA among MRI methods. A cluster analysis revealed that DWI had the highest diagnostic value in terms of sensitivity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy amongst the aforementioned seven imaging techniques., Conclusion: This network meta-analysis provides supporting evidence to the idea that DWI has a higher diagnostic value regarding ischemic stroke among MRI methods, and CTP has a poor diagnostic value among CT methods, which provide therapeutic considerations for Ischemic stroke intervention.

Background: This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the value of magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (MRSI) in the diagnosis of suspected prostate cancer (PC)., Methods: We identified all the relevant papers from the EMBASE, PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases and screened the reference lists. The quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies-version 2 tool was used to assess the study quality. Publication bias was analyzed using Deeks' funnel plot asymmetry test. We calculated the pooled sensitivities, specificities, positive likelihood ratios, negative likelihood ratios, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and 95% confidence intervals. The results were evaluated by summary receiver-operating characteristic curves (SROCs). Ultimately, a univariable meta-regression and subgroup analysis, Fagan plot, and likelihood matrix were used to analyze this review., Results: A total of 19 articles, which were based on patient-level analysis of PC, were included. These studies had a pooled sensitivity, specificity, DOR, and an area under the SROC of 0.86, 0.78, 22, and 0.89, respectively, by patient-level analysis. From the likelihood matrix, the summary negative likelihood ratio and positive likelihood ratio for MRSI diagnosis of PC were concentrated on the right lower quadrant, which neither confirmed nor excluded the diagnosis of cancer., Conclusion: MRSI has a relative application value in the diagnosis of cases of suspected PC. While MRSI is still required for diagnosis along with other clinical data and comprehensive analysis.

Lysosomal storage disorders are a heterogeneous group of genetic diseases characterized by defective function in one of the lysosomal enzymes. In this review paper, we describe neuroradiological findings and clinical characteristics of neuronopathic lysosomal disorders with a focus on differential diagnosis. New insights regarding pathogenesis and therapeutic perspectives are also briefly discussed.

Objective: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a nonpharmacological technique used to stimulate the brain. It is a safe and proven alternative tool to treat resistant major depressive disorders (MDDs). Neuroimaging studies suggest a wide corticolimbic network is involved in MDDs. We researched observable changes in magnetic resonance imaging induced by rTMS to clarify the operational mechanism., Methods: A systematic search of the international literature was performed using PubMed and Embase, using papers published up to January 1, 2017. The following MESH terms were used: (depression or major depressive disorder) and (neuroimaging or MRI) and (rTMS or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation). We searched the databases using a previously defined strategy to identify potentially eligible studies., Results: Both structural and functional changes were observed on magnetic resonance imagings performed before and after rTMS. Various areas of the brain were impacted when rTMS was used. Although the results were very heterogeneous, a pattern that involved the anterior cingulate cortex and the prefrontal cortex emerged. These are known to be regions of interest in MDDs. However, the various parameters used in rTMS make any generalization difficult., Conclusions: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation helps to treat MDDs with good efficacy. Its effect on the brain, as observed in several neuroimaging studies, seems to impact on the structural and functional features of several networks and structures involved in major depressive disorders.

Background: This systematic review combines data from multiple papers on contrast media extravasation to identify factors contributing to increased extravasation risk., Methods: Data were extracted from 17 papers reporting 2191 extravasations in 1,104,872 patients (0.2%) undergoing computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)., Results: Extravasation rates were 0.045% for gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA) and nearly 6-fold higher, 0.26% for iodinated contrast agents. Factors associated with increased contrast media extravasations included: older age, female gender, using an existing intravenous (IV) instead of placing a new IV in radiology, in-patient status, use of automated power injection, high injection rates, catheter location, and failing to warm up the more viscous contrast media to body temperature., Conclusion: Contrast media extravasation is infrequent but nearly 6 times less frequent with GBCA for MRI compared with iodinated contrast used in CT.

Cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a common type of cerebral vascular malformation. The imaging findings are enlarged vessels, thrombosed sinuses, and hemorrhage or gliosis on adjacent brain parenchyma. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can be used safely for diagnosis. Chiari type I malformation is characterized by a caudal descent of the cerebellar tonsil. Coincidence of cerebral AVM and Chiari type I malformation is very rare. In this paper, the authors report MR imaging findings of a patient with coincidence of cerebral AVM and Chiari type I malformation.

Study Design: A systematic review., Objective: The aim of this study was to provide an evidence-based recommendation for when and how to employ imaging studies when diagnosing back pain thought to be caused by spondylolysis in pediatric patients., Summary of Background Data: Spondylolysis is a common structural cause of back pain in pediatric patients. The radiologic methods and algorithms used to diagnose spondylolysis are inconsistent among practitioners., Methods: A literature review was performed in PubMed and Cochrane databases using the search terms "spondylolysis," "pediatric," "adolescent," "juvenile," "young," "lumbar," "MRI," "bone scan," "CT," and "SPECT." After inclusion criteria were applied, 13 articles pertaining to diagnostic imaging of pediatric spondylolysis were analyzed., Results: Ten papers included sensitivity calculations for comparing imaging performance. The average sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with computed tomography (CT) as the standard of reference was 81.4%. When compared with single-photon emission CT (SPECT), the average sensitivity of CT was 85% and the sensitivity of MRI was 80%. Thirteen studies made a recommendation as to how best to perform diagnostic imaging of patients with clinically suspected spondylolysis. When compared with two-view plain films, bone scans had seven to nine times the effective radiation dose, while four-view plain films and CT were approximately double. Of the diagnostic methods examined, MRI was the most expensive followed by CT, bone scan, four-view plain films, and two-view plain films., Conclusion: Due to their efficacy, low cost, and low radiation exposure, we find two-view plain films to be the best initial study. With unusual presentations or refractory courses, practitioners should pursue advanced imaging. MRI should be used in early diagnosis and CT in more persistent courses. Objective: The aim of this paper was to review the classification of adverse drug reactions, highlight the known pathophysiology of immediate hypersensitivity reactions, and discuss the utility of diagnostic testing for immunologically mediated immediate reactions to gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs)., Methods: Current literature on immediate reactions to GBCA was reviewed and summarized., Results: Adverse drug reactions to GBCA are rare, and can be attributed to physiologic, immunologic, and nonimmunologic processes. When immunologic reaction is suspected, particularly in the case of severe reactions, skin testing may be useful to confirm allergy and identify alternative agents for subsequent studies., Conclusion: As GBCAs are widely used for the diagnosis and monitoring of disease, the incidence of adverse drug reactions to GBCA warrants ongoing development of approaches to diagnosis and avoidance of these adverse events.

Study Design: A prospective multicenter cohort study., Objective: The aim of this study was to identify an association between pain and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS)., Summary of Background Data: At present, the relationship between abnormal MRI findings and pain in patients with LSS is still unclear., Methods: First, we conducted a systematic literature search. We identified relationships of relevant MRI parameters and pain in patients with LSS. Second, we addressed the study question with a thorough descriptive and graphical analysis to establish a relationship between MRI parameters and pain using data of the LSS outcome study (LSOS)., Results: In the systematic review including four papers about the associations between radiological findings in the MRI and pain, the authors of two articles reported no association and two of them did. Of the latters, only one study found a moderate correlation between leg pain measured by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the degree of stenosis assessed by spine surgeons. In the data of the LSOS study, we could not identify a relevant association between any of the MRI parameters and buttock, leg, and back pain, quantified by the Spinal Stenosis Measure (SSM) and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Even by restricting the analysis to the level of the lumbar spine with the most prominent radiological "stenosis," no relevant association could be shown., Conclusion: Despite a thorough analysis of the data, we were not able to prove any correlation between radiological findings (MRI) and the severity of pain. The objective of this paper is to correlate the MRI distribution of cryptococcal meningoencephalitis in HIV-1 infection patients with CD4 T cell count and immune reconstitution effect.A large retrospective cohort study of HIV patients from multi-HIV centers in China was studied to demonstrate the MRI distribution of cryptococcal meningoencephalitis and its correlation with the different immune status.The consecutive clinical and neuroimaging data of 55 HIV-1-infected patients with cryptococcal meningoencephalitis collected at multi-HIV centers in China during the years of 2011 to 2014 was retrospectively analyzed. The enrolled patients were divided into 2 groups based on the distribution of lesions. One group of patients had their lesions at the central brain (group 1, n = 34) and the other group of patients had their lesions at the superficial brain (group 2, n = 21). We explored their MRI characterization of brain. In addition, we also compared their CD4 T cell counts and immune reconstitution effects between the 2 groups based on the imaging findings.No statistical difference was found in terms of age and gender between the 2 groups. The medians of CD4 T cell counts were 11.67 cells/mm (3.00-52.00 cells/mm) in group 1 and 42.00 cells/mm (10.00-252.00 cells/mm) in group 2. Statistical difference of CD4 T cell count was found between the 2 groups (P = 0.023). Thirteen patients in group 1 (13/34) and 12 patients in group 2 (12/21) received highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART). Patients of group 2 received HAART therapy more frequently than patients of group 1 (P = 0.021).Central and superficial brain lesions detected by MR imaging in HIV-1-infected patients with cryptococcal meningoencephalitis are in correlation with the host immunity and HAART therapy.

Dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is a rare neurological condition. The imaging findings are enlarged vessels, thrombosed sinuses, and hemorrhage on adjacent brain parenchyma. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography angiography can be used safely for diagnosis. In this paper, we report imaging findings of DAVF in an adult patient.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study., Objective: The aim of this study was to identify morphologic features on magnetic resonance imaging that might correlate with lumbar canal stenosis severe enough to warrant surgery., Summary of Background Data: None of the quantitative parameters measured on x-rays, CT scans, or magnetic resonance imaging correlates well with the severity of clinical symptoms in lumbar canal stenosis (LCS). In a patient with neurogenic claudication, we need to define what would constitute radiologic LCS and whether he needs surgical intervention. This paper attempts to define MRI features of LCS addressing the morphology rather than canal dimensions in any direction., Materials and Methods: A total of 64 consecutive patients who were operated at 113 levels of LCS were reviewed retrospectively. Their clinical notes and MRI were analyzed. Only the axial T2-weighted images were utilized for this study. The images were reviewed by 1 orthopedic surgeon and 1 radiologist and segregated into morphologic categories. No interobserver and intraobserver studies were undertaken., Results: Two types of axial image features were identified in LCS symmetrical and asymmetrical with 5 subtypes. They were trefoil, triangular, "cat's eye," "pinhole," and complete obliteration. Several subtypes were also described. Of the operated cases, 70.8% had a triangular configuration of the canal with symmetrical large triangular canal shape occurring in 49/80 levels. It was impossible to correlate the severity of symptoms, their duration, and the presence of objective neurological deficits with the morphologic picture from the documentation available., Conclusions: LCS seems to produce predictable patterns on T2 axial MRI. The triangular configuration correlates most frequently with surgical LCS. Further studies are needed in normal individuals, in prospective patients, and to determine the outcome of treatment based on MRI morphology.

The availability of an accurate, noninvasive method using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to distinguish microscopic myocardial tissue changes at a macroscopic scale is well established. High-resolution in vivo monitoring of different pathologic tissue changes in the heart is a useful clinical tool for assessing the nature and extent of cardiac pathology. Cardiac MRI utilizes myocardial signal characteristics based on relaxation parameters such as T1, T2, and T2 star values. Identifying changes in relaxation time enables the detection of distinctive myocardial diseases such as cardiomyopathies and ischemic myocardial injury. The presented state-of-the-art review paper serves the purpose of introducing and summarizing MRI capability of tissue characterization in present clinical practice.

Study Design. Retrospective cohort. Objective. To report normative measurements of L1 to S1 lumbar neuroforamina on plain film radiography (PFR), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), accounting for patients' sex and ethnicity. Background. The quantitative criteria fothe diagnosis of neuroforaminal stenosis remains unknown. Acquiring a thorough understanding of normative foraminal dimensions is a key step in formulating objective parameters for neuroforaminal stenosis. Patients and Methods. We measured 988 images from 494 patients between 18 and 35 years old without spinal pathology who received PFR, CT, or MRI within 1 year of each other. Neuroforaminal measurements were defined as the height, area, and sagittal and axial widths. Statistical analyses were performed to assess relationships among PFR, CT, and MRI-derived neuroforaminal measurements, as well as the influence of patients' sex and ethnicity. Results. 330 PFR, 377 CT, and 281 MRI were measured. Of these, 213 PFR and CT, 117 PFR and MRI, and 164 MRI and CT intrapatient images were compared. Statistically significant differences were observed among PFR, CT, and MRI measurements across all levels L1 to S1. PFR measurements were larger compared with those derived from CT and MRI. Weak-to-moderate correlations were observed between PFR and CT, PFR and MRI, and CT and MRI, with the magnitude of correlation decreasing caudally from L1 to S1. Variations in neuroforaminal anatomy were observed based on sex and ethnicity. Conclusion. This study reports 25,951 measurements of normal L1 to S1 neuroforaminal anatomy assessed by PFR, CT, and MRI. The values reported in this study may be used as normative reference measurements of the lumbar neuroforamina. PFR measurements of the neuroforamina are larger compared with those derived from CT and MRI across all levels from L1 to S1. There is a poor correlation between PFR, CT, and MRI when measuring the lumbar neuroforamina. Differences in neuroforaminal anatomy are evident based on patients' sex and ethnicity. This paper deals with the electric field generated inside the bodies of people moving in proximity to magnetic resonance scanners. Different types of scanners (tubular and open) and various kinds of movements (translation, rotation, and revolution) are analyzed, considering the homogeneous human model proposed in some technical Standards. The computations are performed through the Boundary Element Method, adopting a reference frame attached to the body, which significantly reduces the computational burden. The induced electric fields are evaluated in terms of both spatial distributions and local time evolutions. The possibility of limiting the study to the head without affecting the accuracy of the results is also investigated. Finally, a first attempt to quantify the transient effect of charge separation is proposed.

An alternative option would be a study similar to a 2018 paper that identified patients with shoulder osteoarthritis and then searched for previous shoulder or chest CTs performed at least 2 years prior, most often after the development of arthritis. Objectives: This paper describes the use of gamma scintigraphic and magnetic resonance (MR) fusion images for improving the anatomical delineation of orally administered radiotracers used in gastrointestinal (GI) transit investigations., Methods: Ten healthy volunteers ingested enteric-coated gelatin capsules containing 4.4 ± 1.1 MBq SmCl3-labelled resin. Four external body markers containing Sm and Gd-DTPA were placed on the left and right lower costal margins and iliac crests of each volunteer. Anterior and posterior planar images were acquired hourly for 9 h, followed by a final single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) image and subsequent T1-weighted images using a 1.5 T MR system. Coronal scintigraphic images were fused with MR images and assessed for diagnostic information., Results: The fused images revealed a combination of the tissue and organ anatomy with an overlay of the distribution of the tracer. Compared with conventional scintigraphic imaging alone, SPECT-MR fused images improved the localization of spatial and temporal movements of the radiotracer throughout the GI tract., Conclusion: Fusion of SPECT and MR images in conjunction with sequential scintigraphic images improved the assessment of segmental GI transit. These have the potential to provide more accurate diagnostic results and are visually powerful images that would have more widespread acceptance by nonspecialists.
