1. Updated Cosmological Constraints in Extended Parameter Space with Planck PR4, DESI Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, and Supernovae: Dynamical Dark Energy, Neutrino Masses, Lensing Anomaly, and the Hubble Tension

Abstract

We present updated constraints on cosmological parameters in a 12-parameter model, extending the standard six-parameter ΛCDM by including dynamical dark energy (DE ; w _0 , w _a ), the sum of neutrino masses (∑ m _ν ), the effective number of non-photon radiation species ( N _eff ), the lensing amplitude scaling ( A _lens ), and the running of the scalar spectral index ( α _s ). For cosmic wave background (CMB) data, we use the Planck Public Release (PR) 4 (2020) HiLLiPoP and LoLLiPoP likelihoods, Planck PR4+Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) DR6 lensing, and Planck 2018 low- ℓ TT likelihoods, along with DESI DR1 baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and Pantheon+ and DESY5 uncalibrated Type Ia supernovae (SNe) likelihoods. Key findings are the following: (i) Contrary to DESI results, CMB+BAO+Pantheon+ data include a cosmological constant within 2 σ , while CMB+BAO+DESY5 excludes it at over 2 σ , indicating the dynamical nature of DE is not yet robust. Potential systematics in the DESY5 sample may drive this exclusion. (ii) Some data combinations show a 1 σ + detection of nonzero ∑ m _ν , indicating possible future detection. We also provide a robust upper bound of ∑ m _ν ≲ 0.3 eV (95% confidence limit (CL)). (iii) With CMB+BAO+SNe, A _lens = 1 is included at 2 σ (albeit not at 1 σ ), indicating no significant lensing anomaly in this extended cosmology with Planck PR4 likelihoods. (iv) The Hubble tension persists at 3.2 to 3.9 σ , suggesting these simple extensions do not resolve it. (v) The S _8 tension with Dark Energy Survey Year 3 weak lensing is reduced to 1.4 σ , likely due to additional parameters and the Planck PR4 likelihoods.

Abstract

Preceding a core-collapse supernova (CCSN), various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (SK) via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova (pre-SN) neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming CCSN can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and SK, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-SN neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and SK on pre-SN neutrino detection. A pre-SN alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the SK detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-SN neutrino signal from a 15 M _⊙ star within 510 pc of the Earth at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hr in advance.

Abstract

This study reports the response of lettuce seeds undergoing dormancy breaking and early senescence to DBD plasma irradiation. A heat map of germination percentages at 12 h reveals that dormancy has broken at 39 days' storage, and that one minute of plasma irradiation enhances germination in dormant seeds. Plasma irradiation does not affect those seeds where dormancy has already broken. Early senescence via storage was estimated using ESR measurements and the molecular modification of quercetin. This study reveals that lettuce seed susceptibility to plasma irradiation depends on storage duration and conditions, with dormancy state as a critical variable modulating the impact of plasma irradiation.

Abstract

The present study focused on CO _2 capture, storage, and conversion through the innovative integration of plasma–ionic liquid (IL) technology. For the first time, we employed plasma-IL technology to confront climate change challenges. We utilized 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride IL to capture and store CO _2 under atmospheric pressure, and subsequently employed plasma to induce the transformation of IL-captured CO _2 into CO. Furthermore, we performed computer simulations to enhance our understanding of the CO _2 and CO capture processes of water and IL solutions. This comprehensive approach provides valuable insights into the potential of plasma–IL technology as a viable solution for climate change.

Abstract

Efficient reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) is an important process for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) to suppress efficiency roll-off in organic LEDs (OLEDs). Enhancing spin–orbit coupling is effective for fast RISC and is achieved by mediating a locally excited triplet state when RISC occurs between charge transfer states. Here, we experimentally confirmed that efficient RISC occurred in triarylborane-based TADF emitters named Phox- ^Me π , Phox- ^MeO π , and ^MeO3 Ph- ^FMe π . The three emitters showed large RISC rate constants exceeding 10 ^6 s ^−1 . The Phox- ^Me π -based OLED exhibited higher maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE _max = 10.0%) compared to the Phox- ^MeO π -based OLED (EQE _max = 6.7%).

Abstract

Among multimessenger observations of the next Galactic core-collapse supernova, Super-Kamiokande (SK) plays a critical role in detecting the emitted supernova neutrinos, determining the direction to the supernova (SN), and notifying the astronomical community of these observations in advance of the optical signal. In 2022, SK has increased the gadolinium dissolved in its water target (SK-Gd) and has achieved a Gd concentration of 0.033%, resulting in enhanced neutron detection capability, which in turn enables more accurate determination of the supernova direction. Accordingly, SK-Gd’s real-time supernova monitoring system has been upgraded. SK_SN Notice, a warning system that works together with this monitoring system, was released on 2021 December 13, and is available through GCN Notices. When the monitoring system detects an SN-like burst of events, SK_SN Notice will automatically distribute an alarm with the reconstructed direction to the supernova candidate within a few minutes. In this paper, we present a systematic study of SK-Gd’s response to a simulated Galactic SN. Assuming a supernova situated at 10 kpc, neutrino fluxes from six supernova models are used to characterize SK-Gd’s pointing accuracy using the same tools as the online monitoring system. The pointing accuracy is found to vary from 3° to 7° depending on the models. However, if the supernova is closer than 10 kpc, SK_SN Notice can issue an alarm with three-degree accuracy, which will benefit follow-up observations by optical telescopes with large fields of view.

Abstract

We studied the optical variability of 241 BL Lacertae (BL Lacs) and 83 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) from the 4LAC catalog using data from the Tomo-e Gozen Northern Sky Transient Survey, with ∼50 epochs per blazar on average. We excluded blazars whose optical variability may be underestimated due to the influence of their host galaxy based on their optical luminosity ( L _O ). FSRQs with γ -ray photon index greater than 2.6 exhibit very low optical variability, and their distribution of standard deviation of repeated photometry is significantly different from that of the other FSRQs (Kolmogorov–Smirnov test p -value equal to 5 × 10 ^−6 ). Among a sample of blazars at any particular cosmological epoch, those with lower γ -ray luminosity ( L _γ ) tend to have lower optical variability, and those FSRQs with a γ -ray photon index greater than 2.6 tend to have low L _γ . We also measured the structure function of optical variability and found that the amplitude of the structure function for FSRQs is higher than previously measured and higher than that of BL Lacs at multiple time lags. Additionally, the amplitude of the structure function of FSRQs with high γ -ray photon index is significantly lower than that of FSRQs with low γ -ray photon index. The structure function of FSRQs of high γ -ray photon index shows a characteristic timescale of more than 10 days, which may be the variability timescale of the accretion disk. In summary, we infer that the optical component of FSRQs with high γ -ray photon index may be dominated by the accretion disk.

Abstract

ZnO–AlN pseudo-binary amorphous alloys (a-ZAON hereinafter) with tunable band gaps in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) region have been synthesized using magnetron sputtering. The miscibility gap between ZnO and AlN has been overcome using room-temperature sputtering deposition, leveraging the rapid quenching abilities of sputtered particles to fabricate metastable but single-phase alloys. X-ray diffraction patterns and optical transmittance spectra revealed that the synthesized films with chemical composition ratios of [Zn]/([Zn] + [Al]) = 0.24–0.79 likely manifested as single-phase of a-ZAON films. Despite their amorphous structures, these films presented direct band gaps of 3.4–5.8 eV and thus high optical absorption coefficients (10 ^5 cm ^−1 ). Notably, the observed values adhered to Vegard’s law for crystalline ZnO–AlN systems, implying that the a-ZAON films were solid solution alloys with atomic-level mixing. Furthermore, atomic force microscopy analyses revealed smooth film surfaces with root-mean-square roughness of 0.8–0.9 nm. Overall, the wide-ranging band gap tunability, high absorption coefficients, amorphous structures, surface smoothness, and low synthesis temperatures of a-ZAON films position them as promising materials for use in DUV optoelectronic devices and power devices fabricated using large-scale glass and flexible substrates.

Abstract

We report the first search result for the flux of astrophysical electron antineutrinos for energies ${ \mathcal O }(10)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. In 2020 June, gadolinium was introduced to the ultrapure water of the SK detector in order to detect neutrons more efficiently. In this new experimental phase, SK-Gd, we can search for electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay with efficient background rejection thanks to the high efficiency of the neutron tagging technique. In this paper, we report the result for the initial stage of SK-Gd, during 2020 August 26, and 2022 June 1 with a 22.5 × 552 kton · day exposure at 0.01% Gd mass concentration. No significant excess over the expected background in the observed events is found for the neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. Thus, the flux upper limits are placed at the 90% confidence level. The limits and sensitivities are already comparable with the previous SK result with pure water (22.5 × 2970 kton · day) owing to the enhanced neutron tagging. Operation with Gd increased to 0.03% started in 2022 June.

10. First Constraints on Growth Rate from Redshift-space Ellipticity Correlations of SDSS Galaxies at 0.16 < z < 0.70

Abstract

We report the first constraints on the growth rate of the universe, f ( z ) σ _8 ( z ), with intrinsic alignments (IAs) of galaxies. We measure the galaxy density-intrinsic ellipticity cross-correlation and intrinsic ellipticity autocorrelation functions over 0.16 < z < 0.7 from luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and LOWZ and CMASS galaxy samples in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and SDSS-III BOSS survey. We detect clear anisotropic signals of IA due to redshift-space distortions. By combining measured IA statistics with the conventional galaxy clustering statistics, we obtain tighter constraints on the growth rate. The improvement is particularly prominent for the LRG, which is the brightest galaxy sample and known to be strongly aligned with underlying dark matter distribution; using the measurements on scales above 10 h ^−1 Mpc, we obtain $f{\sigma }_{8}={0.5196}_{-0.0354}^{+0.0352}$ (68% confidence level) from the clustering-only analysis and $f{\sigma }_{8}={0.5322}_{-0.0291}^{+0.0293}$ with clustering and IA, meaning 19% improvement. The constraint is in good agreement with the prediction of general relativity, f σ _8 = 0.4937 at z = 0.34. For LOWZ and CMASS samples, the improvement of constraints on f σ _8 is found to be 10% and 3.5%, respectively. Our results indicate that the contribution from IA statistics for cosmological constraints can be further enhanced by carefully selecting galaxies for a shape sample.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the CTA-North site, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to ≃20 GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in 2019 November, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data ever since. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the performance of the telescope. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period—only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope’s behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is around 20 GeV, rising to ≃30 GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.°12–0.°40, and energy resolution from 15%–50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50 hr observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03–30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. A clear periodic signal is also detected from the pulsar at the center of the Nebula.

Abstract

We study the broadband emission of Mrk 501 using multiwavelength observations from 2017 to 2020 performed with a multitude of instruments, involving, among others, MAGIC, Fermi's Large Area Telescope (LAT), NuSTAR, Swift, GASP-WEBT, and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Mrk 501 showed an extremely low broadband activity, which may help to unravel its baseline emission. Nonetheless, significant flux variations are detected at all wave bands, with the highest occurring at X-rays and very-high-energy (VHE) γ -rays. A significant correlation (>3 σ ) between X-rays and VHE γ -rays is measured, supporting leptonic scenarios to explain the variable parts of the emission, also during low activity. This is further supported when we extend our data from 2008 to 2020, and identify, for the first time, significant correlations between the Swift X-Ray Telescope and Fermi-LAT. We additionally find correlations between high-energy γ -rays and radio, with the radio lagging by more than 100 days, placing the γ -ray emission zone upstream of the radio-bright regions in the jet. Furthermore, Mrk 501 showed a historically low activity in X-rays and VHE γ -rays from mid-2017 to mid-2019 with a stable VHE flux (>0.2 TeV) of 5% the emission of the Crab Nebula. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of this 2 yr long low state, the potential baseline emission of Mrk 501, can be characterized with one-zone leptonic models, and with (lepto)-hadronic models fulfilling neutrino flux constraints from IceCube. We explore the time evolution of the SED toward the low state, revealing that the stable baseline emission may be ascribed to a standing shock, and the variable emission to an additional expanding or traveling shock.

Abstract

NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission has been uncovering a growing number of exoplanets orbiting nearby, bright stars. Most exoplanets that have been discovered by TESS orbit narrow-line, slow-rotating stars, facilitating the confirmation and mass determination of these worlds. We present the discovery of a hot Jupiter orbiting a rapidly rotating ( $v\sin \,(i)=35.1\pm 1.0$ km s ^−1 ) early F3V-dwarf, HD 115447 (TOI-778). The transit signal taken from Sectors 10 and 37 of TESS's initial detection of the exoplanet is combined with follow-up ground-based photometry and velocity measurements taken from Minerva -Australis, TRES, CORALIE, and CHIRON to confirm and characterize TOI-778 b. A joint analysis of the light curves and the radial velocity measurements yields a mass, a radius, and an orbital period for TOI-778 b of ${2.76}_{-0.23}^{+0.24}$ M _J , 1.370 ± 0.043 R _J , and ∼4.63 days, respectively. The planet orbits a bright ( V = 9.1 mag) F3-dwarf with M = 1.40 ± 0.05 M _⊙ , R = 1.70 ± 0.05 R _⊙ , and $\mathrm{log}g=4.05\pm 0.17$ . We observed a spectroscopic transit of TOI-778 b, which allowed us to derive a sky-projected spin–orbit angle of 18° ± 11°, consistent with an aligned planetary system. This discovery demonstrates the capability of smaller-aperture telescopes such as Minerva -Australis to detect the radial velocity signals produced by planets orbiting broad-line, rapidly rotating stars.

Abstract

This study reports the response of lettuce seeds undergoing dormancy breaking and early senescence to DBD plasma irradiation. A heat map of germination percentages at 12 h reveals that dormancy has broken at 39 days' storage, and that one minute of plasma irradiation enhances germination in dormant seeds. Plasma irradiation does not affect those seeds where dormancy has already broken. Early senescence via storage was estimated using ESR measurements and the molecular modification of quercetin. This study reveals that lettuce seed susceptibility to plasma irradiation depends on storage duration and conditions, with dormancy state as a critical variable modulating the impact of plasma irradiation. Abstract

We reported the growth of (AlGa)2O3 layers on (11 2 ¯ 0), (10 1 ¯ 0), and (10 1 ¯ 2) α -Al2O3 substrates using MBE, and the electrical characterization of Si-doped (AlGa)2O3 layers. The Ga2O3 layers grown on (10 1 ¯ 0) and (10 1 ¯ 2) α -Al2O3 were α -phase single crystals, while the Ga2O3 layer grown on (11 2 ¯ 0) α -Al2O3 consisted of (11 2 ¯ 0) α -Ga2O3 and ( 2 ¯ 01) β -Ga2O3. The Al composition of the (11 2 ¯ 0) and (10 1 ¯ 0) (AlGa)2O3 layers was controlled by varying the Al flux. The Si-doped (10 1 ¯ 0) α -(Al x Ga1- x )2O3 layers with x = 0–0.41 were electrically conducting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We validate the presence of a two-planet system orbiting the 0.15–1.4 Gyr K4 dwarf TOI 560 (HD 73583). The system consists of an inner moderately eccentric transiting mini-Neptune (TOI 560 b, $P={6.3980661}_{-0.0000097}^{+0.0000095}$ days, $e={0.294}_{-0.062}^{+0.13}$ , $M={0.94}_{-0.23}^{+0.31}{M}_{\mathrm{Nep}}$ ) initially discovered in the Sector 8 Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission observations, and a transiting mini-Neptune (TOI 560 c, $P={18.8805}_{-0.0011}^{+0.0024}$ days, $M={1.32}_{-0.32}^{+0.29}{M}_{\mathrm{Nep}}$ ) discovered in the Sector 34 observations, in a rare near-1:3 orbital resonance. We utilize photometric data from TESS Spitzer, and ground-based follow-up observations to confirm the ephemerides and period of the transiting planets, vet false-positive scenarios, and detect the photoeccentric effect for TOI 560 b. We obtain follow-up spectroscopy and corresponding precise radial velocities (RVs) with the iSHELL spectrograph at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the HIRES Spectrograph at Keck Observatory to validate the planetary nature of these signals, which we combine with published Planet Finder Spectrograph RVs from the Magellan Observatory. We detect the masses of both planets at >3 σ significance. We apply a Gaussian process (GP) model to the TESS light curves to place priors on a chromatic RV GP model to constrain the stellar activity of the TOI 560 host star, and confirm a strong wavelength dependence for the stellar activity demonstrating the ability of near-IR RVs to mitigate stellar activity for young K dwarfs. TOI 560 is a nearby moderately young multiplanet system with two planets suitable for atmospheric characterization with the James Webb Space Telescope and other upcoming missions. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants-neutron stars and black holes-are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokandeʼs response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations toward a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature.

Abstract

In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. The opinions and conclusions expressed herein are those of the authors and do not represent any funding agencies., High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. Abstract

Experiments and first-principles calculations were performed to investigate the effects of Cu substitution in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite crystals. The first-principles calculations indicated that the energy level of the Cu d orbital formed above the VB maximum would be an acceptor or defect level. The effect of Cu addition on device properties was investigated, and the device with added 2% Cu provided higher efficiencies than the standard device. On the other hand, the decrease in short-circuit current density with increasing Cu content would be attributed to the defect level of the Cu d orbitals. First-principles calculations and experimental results provided insight into the function of Cu in CH3NH3-based perovskite crystals.

Abstract

Methanation of CO2 is a key technology to realize a sustainable society. The reactions should be driven at a lower temperatures from the viewpoint of catalyst stability. Methanation with plasma catalysis can drive reactions at lower temperature than thermal catalysis. However, the reaction mechanism is little understood due to the complexity of the interactions. In this study, we investigated the power and pressure dependence of the methanation efficiency when only plasma is used as a fundamental research. We discuss how these parameters change the vibrational temperature and active species density and affect the methanation efficiency using optical emission spectroscopy.
