The observation of in-plane ferromagnetism in layered magnetic materials in conjunction with the topological nodal-ring dispersion in a spin gapless semimetal with 100 % spin polarization has a fertile ground for novel physics, rich scientific significance and for the next-generation advanced spintronic and topological devices. Topological nodal ring spin gapless semimetals with large band gap in the other spin channel prevents the spin leakage and are excellent spintronic materials. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT), we have studied the layered magnetic perovskite, CsMnF4 which is predicted to be a ferromagnetic insulator though the fellow compounds like AMnF4 (A = Na, K, Rb) are anti-ferromagnetic in nature. DFT + U calculations reveal that this layered system undergoes a transition from an insulating to half-semimetallic nature with decreasing on-site Hubbard Coulomb interaction, U. For U = 2.5 eV, we observe the topological nature in the system with the emergence of four Mexican hat like dispersions associated with band-flipping. Also, we calculated the magneto-crystalline anisotropic energy with inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and found that the system consists of in-plane ferromagnetism. Transport properties infer huge anisotropy of one order of magnitude between 'a' and 'c' axes. Interestingly, the estimated Fermi velocities are 2.66 × 105 and 2.24 × 105 m s-1 for Z(=0) and Z(=0.5) plane respectively and are comparable to that of graphene, which might fetch applications in high speed spin electronic devices. The topological phase observed is robust to SOC and the band-crossings associated with nodal rings could be preserved by additional symmetry as the time-reversal symmetry breaks in magnetic systems. The nearly charge compensation observed from Fermi surfaces might fetch memory device applications.

That the rates and yields of reactions of organic radicals can be spin dependent is well known in the context of the radical pair mechanism (RPM). Less well known, but still well established, is the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in which chiral molecules act as spin filters that preferentially transmit electrons with spins polarized parallel or antiparallel to their direction of motion. Starting from the assumption that CISS can arise in electron transfer reactions of radical pairs, we propose a simple way to include CISS in conventional models of radical pair spin dynamics. We show that CISS can (a) increase the sensitivity of radical pairs to the direction of a weak external magnetic field, (b) change the dependence of the magnetic field effect on the reaction rate constants, and (c) destroy the field-inversion symmetry characteristic of the RPM. We argue that CISS polarization effects could be observable by EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) of oriented samples either as differences in continuous wave, time-resolved spectra recorded with the spectrometer field parallel or perpendicular to the CISS quantization axis or as signals in the in-phase channel of an out-of-phase ESEEM (electron spin echo envelope modulation) experiment. Finally we assess whether CISS might be relevant to the hypothesis that the magnetic compass of migratory songbirds relies on photochemically-formed radical pairs in cryptochrome flavoproteins. Although CISS effects offer the possibility of evolving a more sensitive or precise compass, the associated lack of field-inversion symmetry has not hitherto been observed in behavioural experiments. In addition, it may no longer be safe to assume that the observation of a polar magnetic compass response in an animal can be used as evidence against a radical pair sensory mechanism.

The electronic structure and the domain wall width of industrial (Nd,Dy)$_{2}$Fe$_{14}$B hard magnets were investigated using low-temperature, spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in ultra-high vacuum. In a first step, atomically clean and flat surfaces were prepared. The flat terraces were separated by monatomic steps. Surface termination was identified as the Fe c layer from atomically resolved STM imaging. The electronic density of states and its spin polarization agree well with ab initio predictions of the Fe c layer. High-resolution spin-polarized STM images allowed to finally resolve the domain wall width w of only 3.2 ± 0.4 nm.

We propose and realize a new optical state selection method on a cesium atomic fountain clock by applying a two-laser 3–3′ optical pumping configuration to spin polarize atoms. The atoms are prepared in |F = 3, mF = 0〉 clock state with optical pumping directly after being launched up, followed by a pushing beam to push away the atoms remaining in the |F = 4〉 state. With a state selection efficiency exceeding 92%, this optical method can substitute the traditional microwave state selection, and helps to develop a more compact physical package. A Ramsey fringe has been achieved with this optical state selection method, and a contrast of 90% is obtained with a full width half maximum of 0.92 Hz. The short-term frequency stability of 6.8 × 10−14 (τ/s)−1/2 is acquired. In addition, the number of detected atoms is increased by a factor of 1.7 with the optical state selection.

Spin-dependent electron-radiation interaction is derived from the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations of the Dirac equation. A spin magnetic moment term is identified both with spin-preserving and spin-flipping transitions and inspected for atoms and condensed matter specifically of GaAs on the basis of first-principles calculation. The connections to spin relaxation and spin-resolved photoemission are also presented.

Spin-orbit (SO) coupling combined with space inversion symmetry breaking is at the origin of the lifting of the spin degeneracy in the band structure of many materials. The momentum-dependent energy splitting and the degree of spin polarization are indicative of the strength and symmetry of the SO interaction, and enter in the figure of merit of essentially all conceptual designs aiming to control the electron spin degree of freedom in solids. Here we briefly review the role played by spin-and-angle-resolved photoemission (spin ARPES or SARPES) in revealing the spin polarization specifically in the topological states of 3-dimensional (3D) topo- logical insulators (TIs), and we discuss how the progress in the technique can assist the rise of several active fields like spintronics, spin-orbitronics or the generation of spin-polarized beams.

To improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and the short-term stability of cesium atomic fountain clocks, the work of two-laser optical pumping is presented theoretically and experimentally. The short-term stability of the NIM6 fountain clock has been improved by preparing more cold atoms in the | F = 4, mF = 0〉 clock state with a shortened cycle time. Two π-polarized laser beams overlapped in the horizontal plane have been applied after launching, one is resonant with | F = 4〉 → | F′ = 4〉 transition and the other is resonant with | F = 3〉 → | F′ = 4〉 transition. With optical pumping, the population accumulated in the | mF = 0〉 clock state is improved from 11% to 63%, and the detection signal is increased by a factor of 4.2, the SNR of the clock transition probability and the short-term stability are also improved accordingly.

In this work, we address the fundamental question of whether a magnetic material having zero net magnetization can produce polarized spin current from a completely unpolarized one. Common wisdom suggests that this is not possible, but if we break the symmetry in hopping integrals in different segments of the magnetic sample, then a finite possibility of getting polarized spin current is established. To substantiate this fact, we consider a one-dimensional magnetic chain with vanishing net magnetization where one part of the chain is subjected to an ac electric field, keeping the other part free. The ac field, introduced through Peierls substitution, modulates the hopping integrals yielding a misalignment of up and down spin channels, which is the primary requirement to get finite spin polarization. Simulating the system within a tight-binding framework, we compute spin-dependent transmission probabilities using the well-known Green’s function prescriptionand determine junction currents following the Landauer–Büttiker formalism. Our analysis may shed some light on designing spin-polarized devices using driven magnetic materials with vanishing net magnetization.

The optically induced polarization of localized electron spins in an ensemble of quantum dots (QDs) dephases due to the interaction with the surrounding nuclear spins. Despite this dephasing, the spins in the QDs can be controlled to respond coherently by applying periodic laser pulses, leading to a revival of the spin polarization before each pulse. This effect, known as spin mode locking, strongly depends on an emerging selection of certain polarizations of the nuclear spin bath which is driven to a steady state far from equilibrium. We investigate the influence of the nuclear composition in In$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As QDs on this nonequilibrium behavior and demonstrate that nuclear magnetic resonances (NMR) appear as very sharp minima in the magnetic field dependence of the revival amplitude. In this work, we study the spin polarization in the MoS(Se)2–WS(Se)2 transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures by using the non-equilibrium Green’s function method and a three-band tight-binding model near the edges of the first Brillouin zone. Although it has been shown that the structures have no significant spin polarization in a specific range of energy of electrons, by applying a transverse electric field in the sheet of the metal atoms, shedding light on the sample, and under a small bias voltage, a significant spin polarization in the structure could be created. Besides, by applying a suitable bias voltage between leads and applying the electric field, a noticeable spin polarization can be found even without shedding the light on the heterostructures.

We calculate the plasmon frequency ω and damping rate γ of plasma oscillations in a spin-polarized BLG system. Using the long wavelength approximation for dynamical dielectric function, we obtain an analytical expression for plasmon frequency showing that degree of spin polarization P has negligible effect on the long wavelength plasmon frequency. Numerical calculations demonstrate that the plasmon frequency increases (decreases) noticeably (slightly) with the increase in spin polarization in large (small) wave-vector q region. We also find that the damping rate and the shape of γ as a function of q depend strongly on P. The increase in carrier density decreases significantly both plasmon frequency and damping rate independently of the spin polarization. The numerically calculated critical wave vector, at which the plasmon dispersion curve hits the edge of electron–hole continuum, decreases with P and can be used to experimentally determine the degree of spin polarization.

We explore the spin-polarization of quark matter in the NJL model including the scalar and tensor interactions. There are two kinds of spin-polarized phases: one appears in the chiral-broken phase where the quark mass is non-zero, and the other in the chiral-restored phase where the quark mass is zero.

We develop a covariant kinetic theory for massive fermions in curved spacetime and external electromagnetic field based on quantum field theory. We derive four coupled semi-classical kinetic equations accurate at $O(\hbar)$, which describe the transports of particle number and spin degrees of freedom. The relation with the chiral kinetic theory is discussed. Spin bath polarization is the key to enhancing the sensitivity of quantum sensing and information processing. Significant effort has been invested in identifying the consequences of quantumness and its control for spin-bath polarization. Here, by contrast, we focus on the adverse role of quantum correlations (entanglement) in a spin bath that can impede its cooling in many realistic scenarios. We propose to remove this impediment by modified cooling schemes, incorporating probe-induced disentanglement via alternating, non-commuting probe-bath interactions, so as to suppress the buildup of quantum correlations in the bath. The resulting bath polarization is thereby exponentially enhanced. The fascinating Dirac cone in honeycomb graphene, which underlies many unique electronic properties, has inspired the vast endeavors on pursuing new two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials. Based on the density functional theory method, a 2D material Zn3Si2 of honeycomb transition-metal silicide with intrinsic Dirac cones has been predicted. The Zn3Si2 monolayer is dynamically and thermodynamically stable under ambient conditions. Importantly, the Zn3Si2 monolayer is a room-temperature 2D Dirac material with a spin–orbit coupling energy gap of 1.2 meV, which has an intrinsic Dirac cone arising from the special hexagonal lattice structure. Hole doping leads to the spin polarization of the electron, which results in a Dirac half-metal feature with single-spin Dirac fermion. This novel stable 2D transition-metal-silicon-framework material holds promises for electronic device applications in spintronics.

It is recently noted that in certain centrosymmetric compounds, spin-orbit interaction couples each local sector that lacks inversion symmetry and thus leads to visible spin polarization effects in the real space, dubbed as 'hidden spin polarization (HSP)'. However, observable spin polarization of a given local sector suffers interference by its inversion partner, impeding material realization and potential applications of HSP. Starting from a single-orbital tight-binding model, we propose a nontrivial way to protect strong sector-projected spin texture through minimizing the interaction between inversion partners by nonsymmorphic symmetry. The HSP effect is generally compensated by inversion partners near the {\Gamma} point but immune from interaction around the boundary of the Brillouin zone. We further summarize 17 layer groups that support such symmetry-assisted HSP and identify by first-principle calculations hundreds of quasi-2D materials from the existing databases, among which a group of rare-earth compounds LnOI (Ln = Pr, Nd, Ho, Tm and Lu) serves as great candidates showing strong Rashba- and Dresselhaus-type HSP. Our finding also provides an ideal platform to control HSP for emergent physical effects, such as opening a hybridization gap by tensile strain to realize the time-reversal-invariant topological superconductivity., Comment: 16 pages, 1 table, 3 figures

The needs of high speed performance electronic devices for various applications require novel materials and new physical phenomena. For these purposes we propose to study new physical effects based on electron scattering on magnetic skyrmions and vortices distributed in a 2D ferromagnetic material. We show that the topological spin Hall effect can be efficiently employed for the filtering, switching, and separation of spin currents. For some values of the parameters (conduction electron concentrations, and skyrmion/vortex sizes) it is possible to separate Hall currents for different electron spin projections as it is like for different carrier charges (electrons and holes) in the normal Hall effect. The calculations are performed using the Boltzmann kinetic equation for the nonequilibrium distribution function and the Lippmann-Schwinger equation for the transition matrix in the whole range of the adiabaticity parameter. The spin filtering due to the skyrmion/vortex scattering can be several orders of magnitude more efficient in the narrow range of the electron concentrations than that of the ordinary ferromagnetic spin polarization in spintronics.

The effect of spin-polarization on the beam-plasma streaming instability in magnetized quantum plasma is studied. The spin-polarization is induced by the difference in concentration of spin-up and spin-down electrons produced under the influence of magnetic field. The contribution of quantum effects like Fermi electron pressure, Bohm potential and spin magnetic moment have been taken into account while developing the beam-plasma interaction picture. The dielectric permeability of the high-density plasma medium has been evaluated through which the dispersion relation for the beam-plasma instability has been setup and critical wave number for beam-plasma instability has been obtained. The results show that the spin-polarization and streaming speed of electron beam significantly effect dispersion and growth rate of instability. It is found that the spin polarization increases the growth rate and shifts the threshold of instability as well as its termination point towards larger values.

Using the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian and exploiting the Green's function method in the framework of the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, the topological and spin dependent electron transport properties of a trans polyacetylene molecule are studied. It is found that molecules with the intracell single carbon-carbon bonding and the even number of monomers in their chains have two edge states and possess topological properties though their Hamiltonians do not respect the chiral symmetry. A perpendicular exchange magnetic field and two perpendicular and transverse electric fields are used to induce and manipulate the quantum spin dependent electron transport properties. The exchange field induces the spin polarization in different electron energy regions which are expanded by stronger exchange fields. Therefore this proposed device works as a perfect spin filter. The spin polarization can be manipulated by applying the perpendicular electric field and remains robust against the transverse electric field variations.

The total effective spin-exchange relaxation of naturally abundant Rb in a K–Rb–21Ne comagnetometer is analyzed, and the results show that the coexistence of 87Rb and 85Rb isotopes in the same volume can lead to a large extra spin-exchange broadening compared to pure 87Rb. This broadening mainly comes from the contribution of the equivalent reduction in the Rb spin-exchange rate. On this basis, an approximate relaxation model is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to be more accurate than that from a previous work. This study also provides a method for determining the properties of alkali-metal vapor cells.

To elucidate the physics underling magnetism observed in nominally nonmagnetic materials with only $sp$-electrons, we built an extreme model to simulate H-adsorption (in a straight-line form) on graphene. Our first principles calculations for the model produce a ferromagnetic ground state with a magnetic moment of one Bohr magneton per H atom and an estimated Curie temperature above 250~K. The removal of the $p_z$-orbitals from sublattice B of graphene introduces $p_z$-vacancies. The $p_z$-vacancy-induced states are not created from changes in interatomic interactions but are created because of a $p_z$-orbital imbalance between two sublattices (A and B) of a conjugated $p_z$-orbital network. Therefore, there are critical requirements for the creation of these states (denoted as $p_z^{\rm imbalance}$) to avoid further imbalances and minimize the effects on the conjugated $p_z$-orbital network. The requirements on the creation of $p_z^{\rm imbalance}$ are as follows: 1) $p_z^{\rm imbalance}$ consists of $p_z$-orbitals of only the atoms in sublattice A, 2) the spatial wavefunction of $p_z^{\rm imbalance}$ is antisymmetric, and 3) in principle, $p_z^{\rm imbalance}$ extends over the entire crystal without decaying, unless other $p_z$-vacancies are crossed. Synopsis Interference effects resulting from direct single-photon and resonant two-photon ionization of neon and argon by bichromatic circularly polarized radiation were investigated in the framework of the perturbation theory. Analytical formulas are obtained for the differential cross section of the process in multielectron noble gas atoms. The possibility of coherent control of the photoelectron angular distribution and spin polarization will be discussed.

Measurements of decay asymmetry parameters of charmed baryons, e.g., , provide more data to test the W-emission and W-exchange mechanisms controlled by strong and weak interactions. Taking advantage of the spin polarization in charmed baryon decays, we investigate the possibility to measure weak decay asymmetry parameters in the process. We analyze the transverse polarization spontaneously produced in this process and the spin transfer in the subsequent decays. The sensitivity to measure the asymmetry parameters is estimated for the decay .

Synopsis A complex optical potential (OP) is employed within the framework of the Dirac partial wave method to study the critical minima (CM) in the differential cross sections and the spin polarization for the elastic scattering of electrons by the Sr atom in the energy range Ei = 1-1000 eV. The complex optical potential is composed of the static, exchange, polarization and absorption potentials. The number of CM points has been found to be 7 in the DCSs of e-Sr scattering, while the number of maximum spin polarization points observed is 13.

A Feynman diagram analysis of photoemission probabilities suggests a relation between two final-state spin polarization effects, the optical spin-orientation originating from the interaction with circularly polarized light ([Formula: see text], Fano effect) and the spin polarization induced by the spin-orbit scattering ([Formula: see text], Mott effect). The analysis predicts that [Formula: see text] is proportional to the product of [Formula: see text] and the circular dichroism in the angular distribution (CDAD) of photoelectrons. To confirm this prediction, the spin polarization of photoelectrons excited by soft x-ray radiation from initial spin-degenerate bulk states of tungsten using time-of-flight momentum microscopy with parallel spin detection has been measured. By measurement of four independent photoemission intensities for two opposite spin directions and opposite photon helicity, CDAD, Fano, and Mott effect are distinguished. The results confirm the prediction from the Feynman diagram analysis.

In this paper, we demonstrate a three-axis atomic magnetometer based on parametric oscillations, which can measure the three magnetic field components simultaneously and independently. A circularly polarized pump beam is applied to create the spin polarization, and another linearly polarized probe beam is used to detect the dynamics of the polarized spin under a magnetic field. With a closed-loop system to keep the magnetic field in resonance with the atoms, three components of magnetic field are measured by their feedback signals. We achieve a magnetometer sensitivity of 6 pT ()−1, 25 pT ()−1, and 60 pT ()−1 along three axes in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 1 kHz with a bandwidth better than 1 kHz under an unshielded environment. Furthermore, this magnetometer is free of optical modulation, which reduces the complexity of experimental setups. The methods we present here provide a prototype all-electrical three-axis atomic magnetometer.

In this work, we report the behavior of the tunneling current in a semiconductor nanostructure of (Ga, Al)As/GaAs which takes into account the behavior of the electrons and the Rashba’s spin orbit interaction in the presence of embedded quantum dots of different geometries (lens, pyramid and ring) in voltage function, magnetic field, and the different values of the interaction spin orbit (π/2, π/4 and 3π/4). The results that were obtained show, that the intensity of the current presents appreciable changes when is changed the configuration of the quantum dot as the intensities of external fields and spin polarization as well. All these internal and external effects that are studied in our model, significantly modify the transport of information of the semiconductor nanostructure, our results show that the spin effects and the quantum dot configuration contribute to the quantum memories efficiency and the spin filter devices of actual use on nanoscience and nanotechnology.

In this paper, the spin transfer torque (STT) and the exchange coupling of the Josephson junctions containing interesting cases of diffusive/ballistic-triplet/singlet ferromagnetic superconductor materials together with diffusive Josephson junction of the form S$_{1}$/F$_{1}$/I$_1$/N/I$_2$/F$_2$ with I being insulating barrier are investigated. Using the Nazarov quantum circuit theory, it is found that for the diffusive FS$_1$/N/FS$_2$ structure the only emerged torque in normal direction to the plane of the exchange fields of F$_1$ and F$_2$ results in antiparallel/parallel or vice versa parallel/antiparallel transition of favorable exchange coupling depending on the considered parameters of the system, including the nonmagnetic spacer thickness, the superconducting phase difference, the length and the exchange field of the ferromagnets. Furthermore, the analyze of the width of the transitions, the phase difference interval in which an interlayer length-induced antiparallel/parallel transition can be occurred, is performed. For instance, as the exchange field or the temperature increases, the interval of phase difference gets larger. On the other hand, ballistic Josephson junction containing the triplet ferromagnetic superconductor reservoirs solving the 16$\times$16 Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation is studied. It is found that although the exchange fields of the FS are laid in the z and y direction, the STT interestingly exists in all three directions of x, y and z. This exciting finding suggests that the favorable equilibrium configuration concerning the least exchange coupling occurs in the relative exchange field direction different from 0 or $\pi$. To the best of our knowledge it is for the first time that the occurrence of the in-plane STT is reported. Moreover, the occurrence of the beat like behavior with two oscillation period for the out-of-plane STT is interestingly acquired., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

Recent experiments revealed the unusual strong spin effects with high spin selective transmission of electrons in double-stranded DNA. We propose a new mechanism that the strong spin effects could be understood in terms of the combination of the chiral structure, spin-orbit coupling, and especially spin-dependent Anderson localization. The presence of chiral structure and spin-orbit coupling of DNA induce weak Fermi energy splitting between two spin polarization states. The intrinsic Anderson localization in generic DNA molecules may result in remarkable enhancement of the spin selective transport. In particular, these two spin states with energy splitting have different localization lengths. Spin up/down channel may have shorter/longer localization length so that relatively less/more spin up/down electrons may tunnel through the system. In addition, the strong length dependence of spin selectivity observed in experiments can be naturally understood. Anderson localization enhanced spin selectivity effect may provide a deeper understanding of spin-selective processes in molecular spintronics and biological systems.

We investigate spin-dependent electron transport through graphene-based Rashba-strain double junctions. It is found that when electrons are injected from left normal graphene region, high spin polarization oscillation is achieved due to the wave-vector-dependent resonant tunneling. The spin polarization is negligible once the incident direction is reversed. Such a remarkable difference arises from pseudogap caused by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction.
