The article discusses the fabrication and testing of a superconducting dipole magnet based on the concept of tilted solenoid windings. Results suggest that the method requires minimum handling, reduces end field effects and provides a simple way for grading by varying the strand size in different layers.

The fabrication and test results of TQS01, a 90 mm [Nb.sub.3]Sn quadrupole magnet for Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Accelerator Research Program (LARP), are presented. Result suggests that the magnet started training at 80 percent off short sample and was able to achieve 87 percent in a dozen quenches.

The design and fabrication of a supporting structure for 3.6m long [Nb.sub.3]Sn racetrack coils is discussed. Results of the mechanical analysis of the support structure show that the shell is able to provide the required pre-load minimizing the stress in the coils.

The design and analysis of the subscale racetrack quadrupole magnet SQ02 is discussed. Findings suggest that consistent maximum current is reached at different temperatures with the short sample expectations based on strand measurements.

The thermal, electrical and mechanical conditions in a 10 T Nb(sub 3)Sn coil built and tested as part of LBNL's Subscale Magnet Program is focused. The study attempts to simulate time history of the temperature and voltage rise during quench propagation.

A new design is used to develop high-field accelerator HD1 magnets containing two double layer Nb3Sn flat racetrack coils at the Superconducting Magnet Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The implications for future conductor and magnet technology development are discussed.

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Superconducting Magnet Group has completed the design, fabrication and test of HDI, a 16 T block-coil dipole magnet. An integrated 3D CAD model is used to optimize magnetic and mechanical design and analysis.

A detailed analysis of the quadrupole mechanical behavior is presented, which demonstrated that the possibility of delivering well controlled coil pre-compression during assembly, cool-down and excitation. One of the proposed options to increase the LHC luminosity is the replacement of the existing inner triplets at the Interaction Regions with new low-beta larger aperture quadrupoles operating at the same gradient.

A study is conducted to examine the several approaches for fabricating multistrand cables in which the Cu is added at cabling, stage of manufacture. The approach include mixed strand Rutherford-type cables with pure Cu strands cabled together with superonductors strands that have a low volume fraction of Cu, Cu added as a core to a Rutherford-type cable, and Cu strip added to the surface of the cable.

The program ANSYS can be used for calculating quench propagation.

Tests of RD3c, a Nb[subscript 3]Sn common-coil racetrack dipole magnet developed by the superconducting magnet group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), are report ed and discussed.

The Brookhaven National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Fermilab are jointly developing a high gradient quadrupole for the LHC interaction regions. The design involves a two-layer, cos(2theta) coil geometry incorporated in a 70 mm aperture operating in superfluid helium conditions. Magnetic, thermal and mechanical design developments for cooling, high field quality and maximum gradient exceeding 250 T/m are described.

A study was conducted on the performance of Tevatron interactive region quadrupole under superfluid temperatures ranging from 1.8 K to 4.4 K. Performance was measured in terms of temperature and the protection quad heaters' effectiveness. Diffusion times were derived for different power densities, temperature and current levels. Results have potential applications in the design of magnets operating at superfluid conditions.

Fermilab is developing high gradient quadrupoles for applications in the Large Hadron Collider interaction regions at CERN. To gather information on ideal quadrupole designs, tests were conducted on a Tevatron low-Beta quadrupole cold mass. The quadrupole's temperature performance was compared to that of a mechanically-modified, heavily-instrumented version. The quadrupole exhibited excellent coil cooling and quench characteristics in superfluid helium conditions.
