It is not a comprehensive overview of the state of open access (OA)-this isn't possible given that, almost weekly, OA agreements are signed, subscriptions are abandoned, and new models are attempted. This article describes technology decisions that failed to achieve their original intent. The initial funding for the Drinko Library was established by a leadership gift of $5 million with the remaining funds generated by a capital campaign. A total of $31 million was raised for the project. They experimented with touch screen laptops, hand-held book scanners, and overhead book scanners. Laptops was provided so students would not have to wait for desktop units, could sit in comfortable chairs, and/or could walk among the stacks with convenient computer access. But what they discovered immediately was that while students could type papers, they could not retrieve them. Similar to the synchronization problems they had with the Tripads, the HP Capshare scanners had to have serial cables connected to desktop computers in order to save files that could be e-mailed to students.
