Making playspaces inclusive has predominately focused on internal design, addressing factors that constrain play experiences within these spaces for children with diverse impairments and their families. Less attention, however, has been paid to the journey to the site and how that may influence the decision to visit these environments. This paper contributes to this area by discussing the experiences of 10 children with diverse mobility impairments, aged 9–12-years-old, and their families from south-east Queensland, Australia. This person–environment study of their journeys to playgrounds illuminates the role getting to the site and entering the site plays in shaping decisions to actually visit playspaces. The findings also identify key considerations applicable to open space planning and site planning, towards achieving inclusive landscapes for play.

What happens when an academic library's print collection is reduced by half to meet strategic planning goals? The library at the University of Texas (UT) at Tyler joined a shared resources facility—the Joint Library Facility (JLF)—that uses a resource-in-common (RIC) model. The current article describes UT Tyler library's massive weeding project and decision to participate in the JLF as a result of strategic planning initiatives, explains the RIC model along with the JLF, outlines some pros and cons of participation in the JLF/RIC model, and reviews what was learned from the experience.

Public and university libraries have embraced placemaking theories to develop user-centric library spaces. Placemaking has largely been overlooked in the context of academic law libraries. This article explores the range of space planning choices available to law libraries as they downsize their print collections. The benefits of reimaging law library space using placemaking concepts are explained.

While national standards for open space planning have long been subject to criticism, their use is still advocated in a number of Australian state planning guidelines, even if only as a ‘starting point’. This suggests that the British and American origins of open space standards commonly used in Australia are believed by some to have at least a modicum of credibility. This paper seeks to establish documented evidence of the link between Australian standards and their British and American origins and to examine the scientific basis for the latter. Yard planning is essential for efficient operations in container terminals, especially for ports with limited storage space. The purpose of this article was to re-test previous findings that forty years of mathematics research is required to cover 90 percent of the mathematics citations. I have used an improved comprehensive methodology, extracting all articles by the University of British Columbia department of mathematics for 2011 and working with the 4,161 citations from these articles. The results confirm previous research that we need forty years of mathematics research to cover 90 percent of the materials cited by mathematics faculty. Also, I have found that in mathematics only 24 percent of citations are coming from research newer than five years. Moreover, I report that the vast majority of the mathematics citations are from journals—81 percent are journal articles, while only 15 percent are books citations.

More than a project, The Big Shift is an epic library tale for the ages. What starts as a simple collection shift grows into a major space-planning project, a lesson in catalog maintenance, and thanks to Hurricane Ike, a disaster recovery effort. The Big Shift tells the story of how the University of Houston Libraries handled the numerous roadblocks put in front of them during a large-scale project. OVERVIEW:Despite the increasing use of electronically mediated methods for team communications, research continues to underline the importance of face-to-face (F2F) communication for the successful accomplishment of complex, high-tech team tasks. Although a crucial aspect of F2F communication is the physical proximity of team members, studies that have explored the relationship between the design of the physical workplace and F2F communication have produced conflicting findings. How can libraries best assess and improve user space, even if they are not in a position to undertake new construction or a major renovation? Staff at New Mexico State University used a variety of ethnographic methods to learn how our spaces were being used as well as what our users considered to be ideal library space. Our findings helped us make high-impact changes to public spaces while staying within a modest budget and a tight timeline. We used many of the same methods after our redesigns to evaluate our efforts and plan for future improvements.

In the academic Information Commons, the frontline staff are key library assets. This article demonstrates one example of frontline staff observing, analyzing, and modifying user behavior using simple marketing techniques and space planning. James Madison University East Campus Library personnel increased circulation of books by increasing the visibility of the book collection. Minor furniture changes in the lobby, adding rotating themed book displays and providing digital and print signage, produced a dramatic effect. Circulation numbers essentially doubled for the lobby browsing book collection and markedly increased for books highlighted in the displays.

Since the late 1990s, many academic libraries in North America have adapted old buildings or built new library spaces to accommodate technological change. Some have gone further and created active learning spaces that incorporate information technology with services and staff to help users both find information and use it in their research. These spaces have names that include the word “commons,” have entirely different titles with “commons” ignored altogether, and some have no titles at all. While the concept of commons has been embraced by many libraries, how that concept has been applied varies as much as the names. Both, however, tell much about libraries and librarians in the twenty-first century.

Municipal park systems played an important role in the comprehensive city plans that were developed on both sides of the Atlantic at the beginning of the twentieth century, for example in Washington D.C., Chicago, Berlin and Rome. Many hospital libraries suffer from being poorly housed. This article describes a successful effort to find better space for a hospital library. Issues of planning, staff participation, and implementation are discussed, including constraints, what worked well, and what could have worked better.

Creating new public programming that showcases new technology is an idea that has great appeal for most public libraries. This article summarizes ideas that emerged from a library planning charrette that was hosted by the Louisville Free Public Library, with the M.I.T. Design Laboratory facilitating. The article also suggests ways in which innovation and experimentation can be implemented at low cost within the bounds of an existing public library infrastructure. The use of open source Internet content resources is recommended as a source of inspiration.

Transformation of research library space to address the changing environment of scholarship, teaching, and learning is a common occurrence. The transformations are a result of the migration from print to digital, the opportunity to leverage campus partnerships, and adoption of more user-centered approaches for space planning. This paper will explore a collaborative transformation process for creating new physical and virtual spaces to support the changing needs of twenty-first-century students and scholars.

This research investigates the impact on energy use of the different ways in which office spaces can be organised and used. It explores typical UK office layouts, utilisation densities and intensities on a good practice-base case shell. This is achieved using the TAS, Lightscape and Excel software packages. For the average occupancy of 50%, the analysis indicates that the variations in combined thermal and lighting loads are 19% and 51% during the UK peak winter and summer respectively. The respective per capita load variations are 80% and 16%. The analysis demonstrates that space planning and utilisation have significant impacts on energy use and are important in assessing energy performance.

Spatial layout planning is an important part of the underground railway station design process, taking into account its need-driven nature and the resulting infrastructure that is sized on demand. The predicted passenger flow rates are the underlining factor and are divided into ‘levels of service’ for space planning considerations. This paper reports on the development of a knowledge-based computer design environment capable of generating multiple spatial layout solutions, thus providing for more effective fire evacuation analysis when compared with the traditional design process. Since the first modern multifamily housing appeared in Korea during the 1960s, kitchens and their associated dining spaces have experienced tremendous changes. The co-authors, partners in a library space-planning and architectural firm, explain how they have changed their practices to meet the need for future-oriented libraries. They contend that public library builders-both clients and architects-must design their new libraries for constant change, with book storage replaced by more and more people-gathering and -use functions. The authors recommend a turn toward photographic studies and discussions with library users and influentials to define the design possibilities for a flexible library future. The authors use several conceptual and process drawings to illustrate their planning concepts.

In planning for technology in libraries some benchmark standard related to FTE students is desirable. At Yavapai College data was needed to plan for the number of computers needed on the library floor to serve student research needs. A survey of twenty-three responding community colleges yields a ration of students to computers that is a useful benchmark for planning purposes.

This article describes a number of lessons learned in deploying automated planning and scheduling systems for space applications at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Specifically, we describe issues relating to: how plan representation can affect plan quality; how to acquire, validate and maintain planning knowledge bases; and how planning and execution can be integrated. These issues are described in the context of several fielded systems in the areas of science data analysis, ground station automation, and spacecraft autonomy.

Sea space planning and congestion management is receiving more attention. However, little work on sea space capacity and strategy analyses can be found in the literature. Compared to other transportation systems, a sea space system has some special features that require consideration. The system capacity also depends on the pattern of traffic using the system. In this paper, we model a sea space as a directional network and capacity models for berthing areas, anchorage areas, fairways and their intersections, as well as the entire sea space system are developed. These models can be used to compute capacity for any given traffic pattern which can be extracted from vessel trip records or from traffic forecasts. To implement these models, a software system called Sea Space Capacity and Strategy Analysis System (SCSAS) has been developed in Visual C + + and is now being used in Singapore.

The paper briefly comments on current issues including the recent JOAB papers and develops the FCB Grid into the EAC (Experience Affect Cognition) Space planning tool. Understanding how advertising works requires better knowledge of how it impacts, and is stored by, the human brain and how behaviour is affected thereafter.

This study identifies physical elements of design devised or deployed by designers, that the engineers perceive as regulating privacy. The information gathered by the author is directly applicable to space planning standards at the company and, pending further research, could be applied to other situations.

Space management and planning for lihraries is an ongoing, costly process. When a library is sixty-six pcrcent full, planning for additional space should be well undcnvay. For libraries unable to afford expensive computer assisted dcsign (CAD) software, collection models based on spreadsheet software can be used to assist in various aspects of space planning. Human resources used to execute the selected plan can also be allocated using similar microcomputcr applications. This paper reports on how computer modeling was used to assist with the developrncnt and execution of redistribution plans for a general collection in a major academic library.

Guidelines for assistance in the planning and developmental stages of such a project are provided. Structural, electrical, heating/cooling, and ventilation adjustments; furniture and finish selection; and space planning are addressed and discussed in layperson's terms.

The paper reports a recent study of the impact of information technology (I.T.) on the planning and design of office building. Advanced I.T. is associated with changes to organizational structure which in turn affect space planning requirements. Recent research is reviewed to indicate trends in organizational change. Then the implications for planning and design are discussed. Conclusions are drawn for the future layout and design of office buildings suitable for organizations with advanced I.T.

Frederick Law Olmsted's works of park design have recently received renewed attention as fitting examples of the direction contemporary open space planning should take in providing recreational facilities in our urban areas. Although he argued in his writings for urban parks devoted solely to natural scenery, there are wide disparities between the narrative descriptions of the social and aesthetic framework of his designs and the actual plans he developed for urban parks. The characterization of Olmsted as a strong proponent of preservation of the natural environment seriously distorts the actual uses his urban parks received and unnecessarily limits the useful ways his considerable achievements in park design can be applied to contemporary open space problems.
