Two similar Schiff base ligands 2-[(2-isopropylaminoethylimino)methyl]-5-methoxyphenol (HLa) and 2-ethoxy-6-[(2-isopropylami-noethylimino)methyl]phenol (HLb) reacting with cobalt perchlorate and zinc iodide, respectively, in methanol gave the complexes [CoLa2]·ClO4 (1) and [Zn(HLb)2I2(μ-OH)]·I·MeOH (2). Both complexes were characterized by elemental analyses and IR spectroscopic method in the solid state. Single-crystal X-ray analysis was performed, which reveals that (1) is a mononuclear cobalt complex, and (2) is a dinuclear zinc complex. The Co atom in (1) is in an octahedral coordination. The Zn atoms in (2) are in tetrahedral coordination. Antibacterial activities of the Schiff base ligands and the complexes have been studied on the strains B. subtilis, E. coli, and S. aureus.

Poly(isobutyl vinyl ether)-graft-poly(ethylene oxide) graft co-polymer with pendant methacrylate groups (PIBVE-g-PEO) was obtained by photoinitiated living cationic co-polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) with α-vinyloxy-ω-methacryloyl-poly(ethylene oxide) (VE-PEO-MA) macromonomer. For this purpose, anionically prepared VE-PEO-MA hybrid macromonomer and IBVE were irradiated in the presence of diphenyl iodonium iodide and zinc iodide as photoacid generator and activator, respectively. Successful graft co-polymerization and conservation of pendant double bonds were confirmed by GPC, and 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectral analysis. The free radical photo-cross-linking behavior of the graft co-polymer was demonstrated.

The reaction of methy1 2,4-dioxopentanoate (3) with TMSCN in the presence of zinc iodide affords the TMS protected cyanohydrin enol ether 4, from which the TMS protected cyanohydrin 1 can be obtained. Treatment of 3 with TMSCN alone gives the isomeric cyanohydrin 2. Reactions of two other α-keto esters with TMSCN are shown to proceed without a catalyst.

The reaction of α,α-dichlorobenzyltrimethylsilane with carbonyl compounds in the presence of fluoride ion fails to give reasonable yields of the α,α-dichlorobenzyl adducts except when carried out in the presence of zinc iodide and in HMPA as solvent. Under these conditions moderate yields of the adducts can be obtained with cyclohexanone, cyclohexenone, benzaldhyde and trans cinnamaldehyde. These reactions were compared with those of α,α-dichlorobenzyllithium.
