Eagle Harbor Technologies, Inc. (EHT) and the University of Michigan (UM) made the first direct performance measurement of a continuously operating Rotating Magnetic Field (RMF) – Field-Reversed Configuration (FRC) Thruster using a standard inverted-pendulum thrust stand in space-like conditions. EHT developed the power system, and UM constructed the RMF-FRC thruster and conducted measurements in their Large Vacuum Test Facility.

It is necessary to evaluate the safety of highly automated vehicles (HAVs) rigorously before their deployment on public roads. This paper describes a procedure to conduct behavioral competence tests for HAVs using the unprotected left-turn as the illustrating scenario. We first describe a model-based method for test case generation. Subsequently, we propose two methods for synchronizing the motions of the primary other vehicle (POV) and the vehicle under test (VUT), one using fixed speed profile, the other using model predictive control (MPC). Finally, we implement the POV algorithm for the left-turn scenario on an experimental vehicle, and conduct field tests using both virtual and real VUT in the Mcity test facility.

Manufacturing testing screens out defective chips. However, untrusted test environment raises several security/trust concerns. An attacker can tamper the test data to send defective/malicious chips to the market or reduce yield causing financial losses. In this paper, we investigate the adversarial tampering attack of the test data. We shed light on an untrusted test facility that targets reducing yield and deceiving the designer to spend more money on testing for diagnosis purposes. We assume the presence of design-for-security architectures to protect the Intellectual Property (IP) and hide the test data. We analyze the similarity between corrupted and simulated test data under faults. We show that even if the attacker fails to reverse engineer the original IP netlist or decrypt the test patterns and their responses, she/he can still deceive the designer by flipping few bits of the encrypted test patterns, which results in responses that comply with the simulated responses.

The DTU-ESA Spherical Near-Field Antenna Test Facility is engaged in the on-ground calibration and measurement of the C-band slotted waveguide array antenna for the scatterometer on board the three Series B satellites of the EUMETSAT/ESA MetOp-SG programme. This work presents the 2019 campaign of investigatory measurements, which goal is to assess the robustness of the measurement setup when mounting large masses on the AUT positioner, such as will be the case for the 300 kg MetOp-SG antennas, as well as the long-term reproducibility of the measurements. To this end a full measurement was performed, including complete uncertainty measurements, of the DTU Golden Standard array antenna (GS) in two configurations, unloaded and loaded with 303 kg of dummy weight. The measurements of the unloaded and loaded configurations were compared and it is demonstrated that the AUT positioner is capable of assuming an antenna with a mass comparable to the MetOp-SG without suffering any impact to its accuracy. For the long-term reproducibility. measurements were compared with a previous investigatory campaign of the same antenna dating from 2017.

Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is a short burst of electromagnetic energy which can disrupt the electrical and electronic systems. This paper mainly focuses on Field Homogeneity and quite zone areas identification of India’s Largest Outdoor RS105, EMP Test Facility. Modeling & Simulation analysis of bounded wave EMP antenna was carried out to verify the field uniformity as per the standard. Simulated results are verified with practical results after commissioning the EMP facility to meet the compliance testing for RS105 as per the MIL standards with generated test levels more than 50 kV/m and covering the EUT test volume of 17m(L)X12m(W)X3m(H), sufficient to test the large defence and civilian systems.Quite Zone area has been marked as per ICNIRP guidelines after simulation and practical field survey measurements carried out around the facility.

Various fighter aircraft models have been developed following the design philosophy that has been determined by the manufacturer. The development of fighter aircraft from various countries in the fourth to fifth generations is very rapid, such as in the Sukhoi SU-33 and F-35 Lightning II. Observation of the character of aerodynamics is crucial to determine the performance of the aircraft fighter. By observing the flow visualization that occurs, it will be able to analyze the aerodynamic aspect of the observed aircraft model. Water tunnel method has been widely used for aerodynamic analysis because it can produce flow visualization in detail. In this study carried out by visualization testing which has the aim to determine the shape of the flow in the Sukhoi SU-33-like and F-35 Lighting II-like models. This test is carried out using the GAMA water tunnel test facility to determine the aerodynamic flow and force that occurs in the aircraft model to been tested. The results showed that in the Sukhoi SU-33-like model had been stalled at AoA 50° with a Cl max value of 1.45. Whereas in the F-35 Lightning II-like model there was a stall at AoA 40° with a Cl max value of 1.65.

Electromagnetically clean room is planned to be built in the Szechenyi Istvan Geophysical Observatory in western Hungary. The environmental magnetic field will be reduced by five order of magnitude, which is well below the interplanetary magnetic field near the Earth. One of the application of the laboratory is to support magnetic cleanliness program for space equipments. Moreover, in particular for space applications, it is planned to develop, test and calibrate a new generation of magnetometers called SERF (Spin Exchange Relaxation-Free). Active compensation of the terrestrial field will be achieved by means of large coils with current determined from the actual field, which is measured through a magnetometer placed in the observatory. Passive shielding will be provided by a cube shaped room covered with two layers of mumetal. The novelty of the facility is that the two shielding techniques will be harmonized. To this purpose, detailed model calculations were performed in order to determine the best setup for the coils. The results of the numerical calculations show that the size of the compensating coils should be much larger than the size of the room covered with mumetal layers.

Certified by China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) in May 2017, the High-Power Electrical Equipment Testing Center of CASHIPS (Hefei Institutes of Physics science, Chinese Academy of Sciences) which equipped with the largest DC (Direct Current) high-power test facility in China, is a professional test organization on high-power electrical equipment. 15 test reports are accredited by CNAS. Constructed by four thyristor-based AC/DC. converter modules, the rated steady-state current of DC high-power test facility is 120 kA and the rated pulse current is 500 kA. Up to now, the test for 17 devices of 16 companies and manufacturers in the world have been completed. In this paper, the performance and testing capability of High-Power electrical equipment test facility is presented.

Due to the change in energy consumption, the demand for longer and longer cables is constantly increasing. The challenge lies in the production of such cables and, as a result, in the testing of these lengths. Conventional systems reach their limits. The new test rig is capable of testing cables up to four times the length and simultaneously reducing the masses and footprints. This solution is modular and “PD-free” as required for cable testing. It is presented how this can be achieved and which lengths can be tested in the future. The first test facility of this type will be installed and operated in Europe in the summer.

In residential and office buildings, service equipment can be annoying if it produces noise. To avoid noise, especially structure-borne noise, a prediction and calculation of sound power injected into the structure is necessary. For the prediction of sound pressure levels due to structure-borne sound sources in residential and office buildings the standard EN 12354 only provides little information regarding the characterization of a structure-borne sound source. Furthermore, there is little information about the uncertainties of the prediction itself. Especially for lightweight structures, when the mobilities of source and receiver could match, a practical method for the power prediction is missing. Nevertheless, they are necessary for an accurate sound pressure prediction. This paper focuses on the prediction of sound pressure levels in rooms due to structure-borne sound sources. Therefore, the characteristic source parameters were measured with the Two-stage reception plate method. With these source parameters, the sound pressure levels in a lightweight test facility were calculated and compared with measurements. Furthermore it will be referred, if the prediction method in EN 12354-5:2009 using TSM for source characterization is valid for the prediction of sound pressure levels due to structure-borne sound sources in light-weight constructions.

This paper is aimed at demonstrating the possibility of growing a tomato ideotype, fortified in anti-oxidant content (derived from Micro-Tom, a model cultivar for tomato research overexpressing anthocyanins) and specifically developed for spatial environment, in a seed-to-seed cycle (70-90 days) on a CubeSat. To reach this goal, a dedicated micro satellite equivalent to 12 U will be developed to be sent into low-orbit. Growing plants in space is a prerequisite to sustain long-term human exploration of the solar system. Plants can increase the independence of a space mission providing astronauts with food, oxygen, waste recycling, water purification increasing quality of life. Preliminary experimental results to simulate the low orbit conditions are here described, together with all the devices used during the test activities. © 2018 IEEE.

The Central Solenoid Model Coil (CSMC) project of China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) has begun in 2014 to develop and verify the large-scale superconducting magnet technology. CFETR-CSMC coil is mainly composed of the internal high magnetic field Nb 3 Sn coil and external low magnetic field NbTi coil. There are 12 joints in total including six coil inner joints and six transition joints. A simple test facility is required for joint experimental evaluation. In this paper, the test facility and sample assembly are described in detail. The first test results of inner NbTi praying-hands joint are also given. The resistance of the measured inner NbTi joint is about 0.55 nΩ and changes slightly in the current range from 10 kA to 20 kA.

Applying high-impedance differential schemes with mismatched-ratio current transformers (CTs) is generally discouraged. However, in instances where facilities are being expanded, new circuit breakers and CTs may have different ratings than the existing equipment, making it necessary to modify purchase standards to match the existing equipment. Techniques have been developed to allow this application when necessary. Each of the methods has advantages and drawbacks that must be considered in determining the best solution for the application. One easy solution is to tap a higher-ratio CT at a matching tap. For this solution, general guidance has cautioned that those considering applying a high-impedance scheme across a partial CT secondary winding tap must evaluate the effect of the higher voltage on the insulation of the circuit components connected to the other terminals of the CT. This paper investigates the issue in detail, including results of testing CTs in a high-current test facility, to provide practical guidance to practicing engineers in determining the risks and application considerations.

Performance of photovoltaics (PVs) under desert conditions, such as Qatar's climate, is decreased with the soiling of PV panels during the dry season. This is due to the scarcity of important rainfalls, together with a dust soiling rate that is specifically high owing to the availability of dust aerosols (and their easy binding under such hot and humid climate). Using a computational approach to simulate deposited dust particles, the reported study mainly addresses the shading effects. In addition, we also investigate the influence on the heat dissipation of the soiled PV panel surface, since the modules are operated at hot temperatures during the dry season. In this study, the numerical approaches are designed based on the experimental results on dust soiling that are undertaken in-field at the Solar Test Facility, Doha, Qatar.

An electromagnetic pump has been used for transportation of electrically conducting liquid metal coolant. Each component of an electromagnetic pump should be appropriately designed based on the design requirements for improving the pump efficiency. Furthermore, flow stability needs to be guaranteed by the design and control of electromagnetic pump. In this paper, the design and control issues for an electromagnetic pump in a sodium thermal-hydraulic test facility have been provided.

Mil-Std-461 defines emission and susceptibility requirements for electronic, electrical and electromechanical equipment and subsystems designed or procured by agencies of Department of Defense (DoD), USA. Latest version of this standard, Mil-Std-461G, was released on 11th December 2015. The same standard is used by Indian defense sector to test its equipment and subsystems for their EMC compliance. Latest version brought many changes as well as added new test requirements which are not present in earlier versions. This paper presents a study report on the latest version which discusses about new test requirements, general changes and modifications made in individual tests. The requirement of new equipment to upgrade test facility is also discussed. This study report will help test labs and engineers in upgrading test facilities as well as conducting compliance testing in accordance with latest version.

This contribution presents and discusses the results of several measurement campaigns carried out at the CEA-Leti far-field antenna test facility over a wide frequency band (50 MHz–90 GHz). The experimental results are also compared to the simulated one obtained using ad-hoc simulation tools or commercial 3D electromagnetic software. Specific measurement setups dedicated to electrically small antennas and high gain minWave arrays, including cable-less, differential, and mmWave instrumentations, are described in order to demonstrate the versatility of the CEA-Leti facility.

Iterative learning control (ILC) is an approach suitable for systems which repeatedly perform a tracking task over a fixed time interval. However little attention has been paid to the case of multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) systems. In this paper theoretical results are derived and establish a close link between increased interaction, reduced robustness, slower convergence and greater control effort. Focusing on the popular class of norm optimal ILC (NOILC) algorithms, these findings are experimentally confirmed using a MIMO test facility which permits both exogenous disturbance injection and a variable level of coupling between input and output pairs. To address performance limitations ‘point-to-point’ NOILC is then introduced, in which the need to track the reference at all time points along the trial is relaxed.

It is a challenge to measure electromagnetic wave interference (EMI) and compatibility (EMC) issues in complex structures that are electrically large. We have built a scaled test facility by reducing the size of the enclosures by a factor of s, increased the frequency of measurement by a factor of s, and increased the conductivity of the walls of the enclosure also by a factor of s. This results in an invariance of Maxwell's equations. The facility allows us to conveniently test the scaled equivalent of complex interconnected enclosure networks and other large structures. We report on results of a cryogenically cooled scaled enclosure and illustrate its properties as a function of temperature.

Full load back-to-back test of VSDS’s (Variable Speed Drive Systems) are sometimes required for oil and gas projects. VSI (Voltage Source Inverter) technology is becoming the drive system of choice for super large compressor drives, up to 100 MW. Special consideration /facilities are necessary to perform back-to- back tests for VSDS driven by VSI, because the type of converter used for such large VSI’s is usually a diode rectifier without regenerative capability. To realize a back-to-back test for this type of VSDS, a VSI with regenerative converter, (usually adopting PWM converter topology), is necessary. But it is a heavy burden to prepare such super large VSI with regeneration capability purely as a test facility.

The medium-speed rotary emulator at the Lir National Ocean Test Facility (NOTF) at the MaREI Centre at University College Cork was developed to allow for rotating renewable energy converters to be physically tested prior to full development and deployment. This paper outlines processes used to characterise the medium-speed rotary emulator. The system was subjected to a number of tests to determine the engineering values of the electrical torque demand of the drive controllers. The testing was also used to determine the physical limitations of the emulator. The limitations were used to determine the scaling factor necessary to test an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) using the emulator, MATLAB-Simulink model, and Hardware-in-the-Loop system.

Multi-converter systems composed of series or parallel connected modular multilevel converters (MMCs) require a means to manage power sharing between the MMCs by balancing the load during operation. Series connected MMCs require proper voltage balancing while parallel connected MMCs require proper current balancing. The paper describes this imbalance phenomenon, illustrates the solution via simulation results, and presents field measurements obtained with a megawatt class medium voltage DC test facility.

Nowadays, the application of BIPV systems is growing very fast and among this type of technology, application of BIPV facade systems is becoming more common. A main question in this field is how we can ensure the intended performance of such systems considering different involved parameters over the system's life-time. To do so, we need to be able to predict normal behavior of BIPV systems in urban environments, considering the effect of shading from neighboring obstructions. This research investigates a combination of real-time shading simulation using Rhino and Grasshopper with BIPV performance monitoring to detect abnormal system operation. The application of this approach is demonstrated for a 12 m2 vertical BIPV system in the SolarBEAT test facility in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. We have conducted an experiment to better understand the impact of different partial shading scenarios on the I-V curve of a vertical CIGS BIPV panel. The results show that the simulation-assisted approach, coupled with data visualization and a decision tree can be a powerful tool for guaranteeing robust BIPV system output.

This paper describes the total ionizing dose test facility available at the University of Saskatchewan. Two Co-60 sources are available one for high and the other low dose rate radiation effects testing of electronics. The total ionizing dose performance of an operation amplifier was evaluated. The testing results compare well with previously published results.

Hybrid collectors offer unique advantages over photovoltaic modules and solar water heaters, however, they have yet to receive comparable mainstream implementation. Two problems hybrids have faced are high cost and the inability to match the thermal performance of solar water heaters. In this study, a hybrid photovoltaic thermal collector with a modified absorber was built and tested in Jamaica. The absorber was modified with the aim of increasing heat transfer from the PV cells to the thermal fluid. A 3D dynamic numerical model was used to conduct parametric analyses for optimization purposes. Based on the results of the model, a prototype was hand built as well as a solar water heater and a PV module. A stand test facility was constructed to facilitate the simultaneous testing of the three collectors. The hybrid collector was able to heat 7.5L of water from 26.4°C to 45°C in ∼5.5 hours while the solar water heater was able to do the same from 28.4°C to 47.6°C in ∼4.5 hours. The hybrid collector managed an average operating temperature of 51.6°C, 5.5°C cooler than the 57.1°C of the PV module. This cooler operating temperature theoretically corresponded to a longer lifespan and a 2.5% increase in electrical output from the PV cells. The results thus far are promising and hint at the immense possibility for the thermal performance of hybrids to be improved.

Measurements of underwater electric potential (UEP) have several possible applications, including geophysical research, gas and oil exploration, and finding underwater cables and unexploded ordnance. In the present investigation, use of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to perform measurements of underwater electric potential was explored. An AUV was equipped with a spherical electric field sensor containing three pairs of Ag/AgCl electrodes. A controlled electric field source was mounted on a surface boat for testing. In a shallow saltwater test facility, tests were performed in which the UEP sensor-equipped AUV and surface boat passed one another from opposite directions. UEP measurements acquired by the AUV showed that an ac electric field source at frequencies of 5, 10, and 20 Hz on the surface boat were clearly detected.

A new mixed-field radiation test facility called CHARM is available at CERN since end of 2014. Its radiation environment is not only representative for accelerators, but also for atmospheric, ground level and space applications.

A 140 GHz gyrotron capable of producing output powers up to 900 kW for 1000-second pulses has been developed at CPI. Factory testing demonstrated 1000-second operation at the 25 A CW current limit of the test facility, at which the output power was about 500 kW, and demonstrated 900 kW operation for short pulses. The gyrotron was then shipped to Hefei, China, and installed as part of the electron cyclotron heating and current drive system for the EAST tokamak. Commissioning of the gyrotron at the EAST site is currently in progress, with the goal of demonstrating operation at full parameters (900 kW for 1000-second pulses).

PV project investments need comprehensive plant monitoring data in order to validate performance and to fulfil expectations. Algorithms from PV-LIB and Loss Factors Model are being combined to quantify their prediction improvements at Gantner Instruments' Outdoor Test facility at Tempe AZ on multiple Tier 1 technologies. The validation of measured vs. predicted long term performance will be demonstrated to quantify the potential of IV scan monitoring. This will give recommendations on what parameters and methods should be used by investors, test labs, and module producers.

The Indian Test Facility (INTF) for Neutral Beams is designed with the objective to not only test the performance of an ion source but also to characterize the transmission of the Neutral Beam to a length of 20.66 m and thereby generate adequate database on the quality of the beam that is required for the CXRS diagnostics for measurement of Helium ash content in the fusion plasma.
