Analog radio-over-fiber transceivers allow a substantial reduction in the complexity of the remote radio heads in the wireless network of the future. In this letter, we discuss the building blocks for such a transceiver implemented on a silicon photonics platform, with the heterogeneous integration of III–V devices and the co-integration with electronics. Transmission experiments that demonstrate the viability of such integrated analog transceivers are described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The outgoing neutron energy spectra from neutron-induced fission of various actinides are important for basic understanding of the fission process near the scission point as well as playing a large role in neutron transport codes, which are heavily relied upon in the design of advanced nuclear reactors and simulations of critical assemblies. The reliability of the results of neutron transport models is a strong function of the quality of the nuclear data used as input. Currently, the world's experimental database of fission neutron spectra is severely incomplete (especially for higher incident neutron energies) with large uncertainties in key portions of the outgoing energy spectra. Many transport codes use evaluated data libraries, which are based on the approach of the Los Alamos model. Other theoretical models have been developed, but the available data cannot distinguish the results of different models (as is the case for ^239Pu). Better measurements are needed for all incident and outgoing neutron energies, but most urgently in the low-energy (below 1 MeV) and high-energy (above 6 MeV) portions of the outgoing spectra where theoretical model results differ greatly. We present the design considerations (and some characterization results) of the two Chi-Nu neutron detector arrays: one array of ^6Li-glass detectors and one array of liquid-scintillator detectors. These detector arrays are being constructed to meet the challenge of measuring the prompt fission neutron spectra (for a few common actinides) to a higher accuracy and precision than achieved previously and over a larger incident energy range than has been covered by previous experimenters. The nonconductive film (NCF) adhesives have potentials to replace the anisotropic conductive film (ACF) adhesive in the chip-on-glass (COG) or other packages in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) due to their feasible features of finer bump pitch and cost reduction. Prior to applying the NCF to the COG packages, reliability issues, such as interfacial delamination and increase of bump contact resistance under thermal and moisture loads, have to be overcome. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of moisture ingression on stress field of the COG packages with NCF bonding. The coefficients of moisture diffusion and the hygro-strains of the NCF adhesive have been determined by an innovative approach of measuring the out-of-plane deformation of the bimaterial specimens during moisture absorption at the condition of 30°C/85%RH using Twyman-Green interferometry, associated with a finite element analysis and bimaterial theory. In this study, the results show that the average of the moisture diffusion coefficients and saturated hygro-strains of the NCF under 30 °C/85%RH are 1.09 × 10-6 mm²/s and 1.51 × 10-3, respectively. After being validated by the diffusion theory, the moisture-transient finite element analysis reveals that the moisture absorption of the COG package under 30 °C/85 % RH is nearly saturated after 1000 h. It is also found that there are large tensile stresses at pad corner and mediate ones across bump joint, and these tensile stresses gradually increase with moisture absorption and up to the maximum at the state of moisture saturation. Through the parametric study by the validated finite element model, the results show that the tensile bump-joint and interfacial stresses increase nonlinearly with the NCF elastic modulus and linearly with the saturated moisture-induced strain (SMIS) of the NCFs. Furthermore, the COG package with polyimide bumps is found to have lower moisture-induced tensile stresses than that with gold bumps. It is further shown that the tensile stresses from the longitudinal-section and transverse-section models are similar only with a few percent difference in values. It can be concluded that the stress states of the NCF-bonded COG packages induced by transient moisture ingression have been fully addressed through experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches in this study. In this letter, we demonstrate a novel photodiode at a 1.55-mu mwavelength: the near-ballistic uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD). After a p^+delta-doped layer was inserted into the collector of a UTC-PD, near-ballistic transport of photogenerated electrons under high reverse bias voltage (-5 V) and a high output photocurrent (sim30 mA) was observed. The demonstrated device has been combined with an evanescently coupled optical waveguide to attain high responsivity and high saturation power performance. Extremely high responsivity (1.14 A/W), a high electrical bandwidth (around 40 GHz), and a high saturation current-bandwidth product (over 1280 mA,cdot,GHz, at 40 GHz) with high saturation radio-frequency power (over 12 dBm at 40 GHz) have been achieved simultaneously at a 1.55-mu mwavelength.
