39. Experimental Validation of the Open-Source DMPC Framework GRAMPC-D applied to the Remotely Accessible Robotarium

Abstract

The open-source framework GRAMPC-D enables controlling systems based on distributed model predictive control (DMPC) by providing an implementation that is capable of solving the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers algorithm (ADMM) in the millisecond range. It supports communication over a network and plug-and-play mechanisms. This paper presents an experimental validation of GRAMPC-D applied to the multi-agent laboratory Robotarium. In the first experiment, a distribution problem is considered, whereby four robots maximize the distance between them. A formation control scenario is evaluated in the second scenario, whereby eleven robots form a rotating letter “G”. In the third experiment, a platooning scenario is evaluated in combination with plug-and-play mechanisms. The per-agent computation time in each experiment is lower than the sampling time. As these scenarios would exceed the system class that is currently considered in the implementation of GRAMPC-D, it is extended to consider agents that are coupled in their cost functional.

Abstract

Understanding heat transport at solid-solid interface is crucial for both the fundamentals of thermal science and the engineering applications such as thermal management in semiconductor devices. The role of anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering at interface has been investigated by the classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and also by quantum modeling via the non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) formalism recently. However, the investigations on the role of lattice anharmonicity on heat transport at interface remain inconclusive.

Abstract

The generation of correlated photons typically requires a highly nonlinear medium that is strongly coupled to an optical mode. Recently, significant advances have been made in this direction by strongly coupling photons to quantum emitters and exploiting the inherently nonlinear response of the latter. A number of methods have been pursued for this purpose, employing, e.g., high finesse optical cavities or strongly interacting Rydberg atoms. However, the implementation of strong and low-loss photon-photon interactions remains a challenging goal.

Abstract

Heat dissipation is one of the most important issue in modern highly integrated electronic devices. Thermal conduction in semiconductors becomes less efficient as structures scale down to nanoscale due to the predominant phonon-boundary scattering. Besides the classical heat dissipation channels of conduction, convection, and radiation, recent studies have indicated that surface phonon-polaritons (SPhPs), which are evanescent electromagnetic waves generated by the hybridization of optical phonons and photons, open a new heat transport channel in nanofilms [ Fig. 1(a) ] [1] - [4] . These waves propagate along the surface of polar dielectric materials and could be powerful heat carriers capable of enhancing the thermal performance of micro- and nanoscale devices. In this work, we experimentally observe the energy contribution of SPhPs by systematic measurements of the in-plane thermal conductivity of SiN nanofilms with different thicknesses and temperatures ranging from 300 to 800 K.

Abstract

A new technology platform is presented that utilized capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUT) for the on-chip integration of proximity and tactile sensing. This platform integrated in robotic grippers enables tactile and reactive grasping. A single channel proximity system is demonstrated to distinguish objects and reveal high spatial resolution to distances of 10 mm.
