17. Controlling the Aspect Ratio of Quantum Dots: From Columnar Dots to Quantum Rods.

Abstract

We demonstrate the feasibility and flexibility of artificial shape engineering of epitaxial semiconductor nanostructures. Novel nanostructures including InGaAs quantum rods (QRs), nanocandles, and quantum dots (QDs)-in-rods were realized on a GaAs substrate. They were formed by depositing a short-period GaAs/InAs superlattice (SL) on a seed QD layer by molecular beam epitaxy growth. The InAs layer thickness in the SL plays an important role in obtaining the QRs. The growth of the QRs is very sensitive to growth interruption and growth temperature. By properly choosing both growth parameters, QRs with length of 41 nm corresponding to an extremely large aspect ratio of 4.1 were obtained. The evolution from a 0-D to 1-D confinement type is evidenced in the optical properties. The origin of the optical transitions from the QRs was understood by calculations of the electronic states within a fully 3-D approach in the eight-band kcdotp approximation. The QRs are embedded in a GaAs matrix and are therefore free from surface traps. This feature enables high material quality and consequently their application in real devices. At room temperature, laser diodes based on QR active regions lasing around 1120 (or 1130) nm are demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Latent factor models have been proved to be the state of the art for the Collaborative Filtering approach in a Recommender System. However, latent factors obtained with mathematical methods applied to the user-item matrix can be hardly interpreted by humans. In this paper we exploit Topic Models applied to textual data associated with items to find explanations for latent factors. Based on the Movie Lens dataset and textual data about movies collected from Freebase we run a user study with over hundred participants to develop a reference dataset for evaluating different strategies towards more interpretable and portable latent factor models.

Abstract

Microscopic simulation of traffic, while often necessary to capture the effects of interest, is a computationally expensive simulation strategy. What can be observed, however, is that the accuracy required from the simulation for post simulation analysis can depend on the simulated world and vary over simulated time - roads becoming crowded may be simulated differently than sparsely used roads. In this paper we explore multi-model simulation as an adaptive simulation strategy. Multi-model simulations are capable of selecting and switching to a suitable simulation model at runtime, based on the state of the simulated world. This simulation strategy reduces the computational complexity of traffic microsimulations while still maintaining the desired level of accuracy needed to produce meaningful results.
