The nonconductive film (NCF) adhesives have potentials to replace the anisotropic conductive film (ACF) adhesive in the chip-on-glass (COG) or other packages in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) due to their feasible features of finer bump pitch and cost reduction. Prior to applying the NCF to the COG packages, reliability issues, such as interfacial delamination and increase of bump contact resistance under thermal and moisture loads, have to be overcome. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of moisture ingression on stress field of the COG packages with NCF bonding. The coefficients of moisture diffusion and the hygro-strains of the NCF adhesive have been determined by an innovative approach of measuring the out-of-plane deformation of the bimaterial specimens during moisture absorption at the condition of 30°C/85%RH using Twyman-Green interferometry, associated with a finite element analysis and bimaterial theory. In this study, the results show that the average of the moisture diffusion coefficients and saturated hygro-strains of the NCF under 30 °C/85%RH are 1.09 × 10-6 mm²/s and 1.51 × 10-3, respectively. After being validated by the diffusion theory, the moisture-transient finite element analysis reveals that the moisture absorption of the COG package under 30 °C/85 % RH is nearly saturated after 1000 h. It is also found that there are large tensile stresses at pad corner and mediate ones across bump joint, and these tensile stresses gradually increase with moisture absorption and up to the maximum at the state of moisture saturation. Through the parametric study by the validated finite element model, the results show that the tensile bump-joint and interfacial stresses increase nonlinearly with the NCF elastic modulus and linearly with the saturated moisture-induced strain (SMIS) of the NCFs. Furthermore, the COG package with polyimide bumps is found to have lower moisture-induced tensile stresses than that with gold bumps. It is further shown that the tensile stresses from the longitudinal-section and transverse-section models are similar only with a few percent difference in values. It can be concluded that the stress states of the NCF-bonded COG packages induced by transient moisture ingression have been fully addressed through experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches in this study. The Formosa Satellite-3 and Constellation Observing System for the Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC) radio occultation (RO) mission has been successfully launched on April 14, 2006. The FORMOSAT-3/ COSMIC mission uses global positioning system (GPS) signals to study the atmosphere and the ionosphere with global coyerage. Receivers that are installed onboard of the six small FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC satellites register the phase and the amplitude of radio waves at two GPS frequencies. We give a preliminary analysis of the first RO measurements that are provided by the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC mission. The geographical distribution of the first FORMOSAT-3/CO5MIC RO experiments is shown. We demonstrate that the performance of the first measurements allows obtaining the vertical profiles of the refractivity, temperature, and pressure for the considered FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC RO events with expected accuracy, which is quite similar to the accuracy of the previous Challenging Mini-Satellite Payload and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment RO missions. New elements in the RO technology are suggested for further improving the accuracy and broadening the application range of the RO method. We emphasize new directions in applying the RO method to measure the vertical gradients of the refractivity in the atmosphere, to determine the temperature regime in the upper stratosphere, and to investigate the internal wave activity in the atmosphere. We find a significant correlation between the phase acceleration and the intensity variations in the RO signals that are emitted by GPS satellites and registered by the FORMOSAT-3/ COSMIC satellites. This correlation opens a way to locate the layered structures in the propagation medium based on simultaneous observations of the radio wave intensity and the phase variations in trans-ionospheric satellite-to-satellite links. Controllable remanent states have been studied on the microstructured magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) rings through magnetoresistance measurements. These rings were designed accordingly with an outer/inner diameter of 2/1 and 1/0.5 µm to reveal two and one metastable states, respectively, during the magnetization reversal process on the free layer. The distinct magnetoresistance levels based on the tunneling magnetoresistance effect are associated with the relative alignment of magnetization of free layer and pinned layer. As a result, four and three controllable remanent magnetic states on the free layer were manipulated by ramping external magnetic fields, applied in the biasing direction, with various field ranges, giving rise to four and three stable mangetoresistance values at zero field. Microstructured magnetic tunnel junction ring with outer/inner diameter of 2/1 μm has been fabricated to investigate the angular dependence of magnetoresistance during magnetization reversal process. The minor loop of magnetoresistive curve reveals four distinct resistance levels associated with four magnetization configurations within the free layer throughout the magnetization reversal. The magnetoresistance decreases with increasing angle between applied external field and biasing direction, which is resulted from the relative alignment of total magnetization of pinned and free layer. An extra feature appeared in the minor loop when the external field is transverse to the biasing direction; this can be attributed to a vortex-pair formation/annihilation in the free layer. Furthermore, a series of schemes of magnetic configurations of pinned and free layers are illustrated to explain the routes of minor loops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microstructured magnetic tunnel junction rings have been fabricated by a top-down technique combining electron beam lithography and ion milling process. Four-terminal magnetoresistance measurements and magnetic force microscopy were used to successfully explore a four-transition process within the free layer throughout the magnetization reversal. Various magnetization configurations were identified to be the onion state, vortex-pair state, vortex state, vortex-core state, and reverse onion state. In addition, the various durations of each magnetic state observed in the magnetoresistance curve can be utilized for the study of a coupling effect between the pinned layer and the free layer. The crystal structure, magnetic, and transport properties of (Tb1-xNaxMnO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) perovskites prepared by solid-state reaction were investigated. According to powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), the compounds were found to be of orthorhombic crystal structure with a space group Pbnm. The (Tb1-xNax)MnO3 system shows a magnetic transition around 10, 20, and 30 K for x = 0,0.15, and 0.3, respectively, at a magnetic field of 1000 Oe. Both magnitude and the temperature position of the peak increase with increasing Na content. This behavior points to enhancement of the ferromagnetic interactions. Moreover, a decrease in activation energy from 62 meV (x = 0) to 39 meV (x = 0.3) was found. This means that Na substitution decreases the activation energy and resistivity in the parent TbMnO3.
