Risk of blackouts is more than expected and must be considered in the power system studies. The interest of this paper is to minimize the blackouts risk during minimizing the costs in probabilistic transmission expansion planning (TEP). In this paper, a long-term reliability analysis, which was developed by self-organized criticality theory, is used in a multi-objective optimization to include risk of blackouts in TEP. The objective functions are costs and expected energy not supplied. Also, a new formulation for calculating transmission operating cost as a part of cost function is proposed. The problem is solved by a multi-objective particle swarm optimization to find an optimal Pareto set from which the decision-maker can choose the most desirable one, regarding existing budget. The proposed method is applied to the IEEE 118-bus test system to investigate its applicability and scalability. The results are compared with security-constrained TEP, which uses famous deterministic criterion known as N-1. The proposed approach produces more efficient plans for suppressing cascading blackouts with less network investment. The causes of electrical accidents which occur during maintenance of power lines are sometimes not traceable. Unfortunately, a grounding practice which has been widely adopted in the utility industry in India, U.K., and some other countries unintentionally causes so many fatal accidents every year. The conclusion was arrived after analyzing some fatal accidents. This practice of protective grounding is still continued by many distribution companies without realizing the hazards involved. For de-energized line maintenance, grounding the line at source end is commonly practiced for the purpose of personal protection. This paper explains how this safety practice turns into hazard by transferring the substation ground grid potential to the worksite and why this transferred potential cannot be controlled by any means in three-wire overhead distribution systems which run with no separated ground wire. The aim of this paper is to show the possibility to harvest RF energy to supply wireless sensor networks in an outdoor environment. In those conditions, the number of existing RF bands is unpredictable. The RF circuit has to harvest all the potential RF energy present and cannot be designed for a single RF tone. In this paper, the designed RF harvester adds powers coming from an unlimited number of sub-frequency bands. The harvester’s output voltage ratios increase with the number of RF bands. As an application example, a 4-RF band rectenna is designed. The system harvests energy from GSM900 (Global System for Mobile Communications), GSM1800, UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and WiFi bands simultaneously. RF-to-dc conversion efficiency is measured at 62% for a cumulative -\10-dBm input power homogeneously widespread over the four RF bands and reaches 84% at 5.8 dBm. The relative error between the measured dc output power with all four RF bands on and the ideal sum of each of the four RF bands power contribution is less than 3%. It is shown that the RF-to-dc conversion efficiency is more than doubled compared to that measured with a single RF source, thanks to the proposed rectifier architecture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lightning is considered one of the main causes of faults in overhead distribution networks. Direct strokes usually lead to flashovers due to the insulation levels that are used. Induced overvoltages caused by indirect lightning are usually lower and can be efficiently reduced by metal–oxide surge arresters. Hence, its associated flashover rate can be reduced. In this paper, a heuristic method is proposed to optimize the number of surge arresters as well as their locations. Reactive power planning has always been a key research area in power distribution engineering; technically and economically. However, the problem needs to be revisited to consider several aspects of modern distribution systems, such as a high penetration level of renewable resources with intermittent nature; the microgrid concept and the possibility of system operation in grid-connected or isolated single microgrid mode, or isolated multiple microgrids; and probabilistic or hourly load profile. Motivated by these needs and considering all these aspects, this paper presents a generalized approach for probabilistic optimal reactive power planning in modern distribution systems. A new index is defined to probabilistically assess the success of microgrids in terms of real and reactive power adequacy and voltage limit constraints. Afterward, the reactive power planning is performed to reduce the annual energy losses of the grid-connected system and increase the defined microgrid success index. The problem formulation and solution algorithms are presented in this paper. The well-known PG&E 69-bus distribution system is selected as a test case, and through several sensitivity studies, the effect of optimization coefficients on the design and the robustness of the algorithm are investigated. This paper discusses and compares phase-shifted pulse-width modulation (PS-PWM) and level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) in a modular multilevel single-delta bridge-cell (SDBC) inverter for utility-scale grid-tied photovoltaic applications. This three-phase SDBC inverter provides the capability of operating even under power-distribution imbalances not only among three clusters, but also among cascaded bridge cells in each cluster. The main focus of this research lies in analyzing the capability of operation under severe power-distribution imbalances and presenting power-balancing methods based on zero-sequence current injection, which result in an extended power-balancing capability. This paper highlights that LS-PWM is superior to PS-PWM in both power-balancing capability and harmonic performance at the ac side of the SDBC inverter when operating under power-distribution imbalances. Widespread three-phase imbalance causes inefficient uses of low voltage (LV) network assets, leading to additional reinforcement costs (ARCs). Previous work that assumed balanced three phases underestimated the reinforcement cost throughout the whole utility by more than 50%. Previous work that quantified the ARCs was limited to individual network components, relying on full sensory data. This paper proposes a novel methodology that will scale the ARC estimation at a utility level, when the data concerning the imbalance of circuits or transformers are scarce. A novel statistical method is developed to estimate the volume of assets that need to be invested by identifying the relationship between the triangular distribution of circuit imbalance and that of circuit utilization. When there are more data available in future, accurate probability distributions can be constructed to reflect the network condition across the whole system. In light of this, two novel generalized ARC estimation formulas are developed that account for generic probability distributions. The developed methodology is applied to a real utility system in the UK, showing that: 1) three-phase imbalance leads to ARCs that are even greater than the reinforcement costs in the balanced case; 2) a 1% increase in the demand growth rate, the maximum degree of imbalance (DIB) and the maximum nominal utilization rate leads to over 10%, approximately 1% and 2% increases in the ARCs, respectively; and 3) the ARC is not sensitive to the minimum DIB values and the minimum nominal utilization rates. Recently, the layout optimization of the secondary coils for wireless power transfer systems has been developed using the fixed grid (FG) representation. Although this method can effectively and efficiently determine the optimized coil design under the given conditions, a distinct discrepancy exists between the evaluated coil mass (i.e., simulation data) and the physical coil mass (i.e., experiment data). In this paper, the FG-based coil layout optimization is revisited based on the smooth boundary (SB) representation in order to resolve the inherent drawbacks of the FG representation. Induced voltage, electromagnetic field strength, and coil mass, which have been previously derived in the FG representation, are reformulated in terms of design variables (i.e., a reference turn and relative turns in this paper) in the SB representation. Through the layout optimization, the optimized layouts of the secondary coil are determined in order to minimize the coil mass while satisfying the constraints for induced voltage and magnetic field strength; then, they are postprocessed in order to obtain a smooth, elaborate boundary. Convexification of an optimal scheduling algorithm for distributed energy storage (DES) in radial distribution systems with high penetration of photovoltaic resources is studied. The AC power flow equalities are taken into account as constraints in the optimization model. Different from the typical optimal power flow problem, the objective function of a DES optimal scheduling (DESOS) problem varies with changing operational requirements. In this paper, three frequently-used objective functions are considered for the DESOS problem. Two of them are monotonic over the feasible set while the third is not. An illustrative example elucidates that the descent direction of a chosen objective function significantly impacts the efficiency of the second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation for the DESOS problem. To obtain tighter semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations for the DESOS cases where the SOCP relaxation is not exact, this paper looks for computationally efficient convex constraints that can approximate the rank-1 constraint in the non-iterative framework. The designed non-iterative enhanced SDP relaxations are compared in terms of tightness of convexification for the DESOS problems considering the three objective functions independently. Enhanced utilization of the existing transmission network is a cheaper and paramount alternative to building new transmission lines. Flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices are advanced technologies that offer transfer capability improvements via power flow control. Although many FACTS devices exist in power systems, their set points are not frequently changed for power flow control purposes, which is mainly due to the computational complexity of incorporating FACTS flexibility within the market problem. This paper proposes a computationally efficient method for adjustment of variable impedance-based FACTS set points, which is also compatible with existing market solvers. Thus, the method can be employed by the existing solvers with minimal modification efforts. This paper models FACTS reactance control as injections to keep the initial shift factors unchanged. Next, the paper formulates a dc optimal power flow that co-optimizes FACTS set points alongside generation dispatch. The resulting problem, which is in a nonlinear program, is then reformulated to a mixed-integer linear program. Finally, an engineering insight is leveraged to further reduce the computational complexity to a linear program. Driven by smart grid technologies, distributed energy resources (DERs) have been rapidly developing in recent years for improving reliability and efficiency of distribution systems. Emerging DERs require effective and efficient coordination in order to reap their potential benefits. In this paper, we consider an optimal DER coordination problem over multiple time periods subject to constraints at both system and device levels. Fully distributed algorithms are proposed to dynamically and automatically coordinate distributed generators with multiple/single storages. With the proposed algorithms, the coordination agent at each DER maintains only a set of variables and updates them through information exchange with a few neighbors. We show that the proposed algorithms with properly chosen parameters solve the DER coordination problem as long as the underlying communication network is connected. The knowledge of the topology of a wired network is often of fundamental importance. For instance, in the context of power line communications networks it is helpful to implement data routing strategies, while in power distribution networks and smart microgrids it is required for grid monitoring and for power flow management. In this paper, we use the transmission line theory to shed new light and to show how the topological properties of a wired network can be found exploiting admittance measurements at the nodes. An analytic proof is reported to show that the derivation of the topology can be done in complex networks under certain assumptions. We also analyze the effect of the network background noise on admittance measurements. In this respect, we propose a topology derivation algorithm that works in the presence of noise. Power flow analysis is one of the tools that is required in most of the distribution system studies. An important characteristic of distribution systems is the load unbalance in the phases and a three-phase power flow analysis is needed. In this paper, a three-phase linear power flow (3LPF) formulation is derived based on the fact that in a typical distribution system, voltage angles and magnitudes vary within relatively narrow boundaries. The accuracy of the proposed 3LPF is verified using several test cases. Potential applications of the proposed method are in distribution systems state estimation and volt-VAR optimization. This paper presents analytical closed-form expressions that uncover the contributions of nodal active- and reactive-power injections to the active- and reactive-power flows on transmission lines in an AC electrical network. Paying due homage to current- and voltage-divider laws that are similar in spirit, we baptize these as the power divider laws. Derived from a circuit-theoretic examination of AC power-flow expressions, the constitution of the power divider laws reflects the topology and voltage profile of the network. We demonstrate the utility of the power divider laws to the analysis of power networks by highlighting applications to transmission-network allocation, transmission-loss allocation, and identifying feasible injections while respecting line active-power flow set points. This paper discusses electrical distribution for refrigerated containers (reefers) in port terminals, characterized as parks of uniform distributed loads. Power systems of uniform distributed loads need configurations with modularity whenever possible, to ensure an easier installation, operation, and maintenance with significant cost reductions. This paper shows what has been the practice at ports in the past to provide Low Voltage (LV) supply to reefers from medium voltage (MV)/LV substations to cluster of reefer outlets panel with group of outdoor receptacles, used to connect power supply cord to each reefer. In the new method of power distribution system for the reefers, it is suggested to use a main MV underground distribution and portable containerized MV/LV transformer substations with close coupled LV distribution panel including reefer outlets. This potable power supply unit can be installed inside the reefer racks to supply locally a modular LV distribution to the reefers. This new method of supplying power to reefer racks has benefits over the past practice. It can offer a relevant flexibility for expansions and endorses development of new fitting components. This paper is motivated by the need to ensure fast microgrid stability. Modeling for purposes of establishing stability criterion and possible implementations are described. In particular, this paper proposes that highly heterogeneous microgrids comprising both conventional equipment and equipment based on rapidly emerging new technologies can be modeled as purely electric networks in order to provide intuitive insight into the issues of network stability. It is shown that the proposed model is valid for representing fast primary dynamics of diverse components (gensets, loads, and PVs), assuming that slower variables are regulated by the higher level controllers. Based on this modeling approach, an intuitively appealing criterion is introduced requiring that components or their combined representations must behave as closed-loop passive electrical circuits. Implementing this criterion is illustrated using a typical commercial feeder microgrid. Notably, these set the basis for standards that should be required for groups of components (subgrids) to ensure no fast instabilities in complex microgrids. Building the need for incrementally passive and monotonic characteristics into standards for network components may clarify the system level analysis and integration of microgrids. Microgrids have been implemented all over the world in the last years. Several benefits are known for consumers and power grid management. As part of microgrids, the local energy management of renewable energy sources can prevent energy losses and support microgrid operation in islanded modes. Besides the success of the current microgrid implementations, improved components and models are required. This paper proposes two tools that support the implementation of microgrid demonstrations, namely at laboratorial premises. Improved microgrid models implementation enables the development, test, and validation of new energy management methodologies. The first proposed tool is a wireless gateway for energy monitoring and control. To implement complete microgrids, the second tool proposes an energy analyzer emulator, bringing unavailable loads to the microgrid, such as residential loads usually unavailable in R&D centers. A real laboratory microgrid implementation using the proposed gateway and the proposed energy analyzer emulator is presented and discussed, demonstrating the actual capabilities of the developed tools. In dc distribution networks, the parallel H-bridge dc/dc converters (HBDCs) are widely adopted to convert voltage levels with the higher power rating and reliability, in which the parallel HBDCs are naturally connected in input-parallel output-parallel (IPOP) form. However among IPOP HBDCs, there are complicated circulating currents that will influence the safe and steady operation of dc distribution networks. This paper focuses on the suppression of these circulating currents. First, the detailed mathematic models of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs are derived. Through the model, it is found that various types of circulating currents exist in the system, including the circulating currents within the single HBDC and the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs. Hence, the suppression of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs is a multiobjective control problem. In this paper, it is proven that the conventional one degree of freedom control based on the bipolar modulation cannot eliminate all the circulating currents. Second, a novel two degrees of freedom control method is proposed to suppress all kinds of circulating currents based on the improved modulation way of HBDCs, which consists of two parts. The droop based control is used to suppress the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs, whereas the common mode control is used to control the circulating currents within the single HBDC. Inverse analysis is a known mathematical approach, which has been used to solve physical problems of a particular nature. Nevertheless, it has seldom been applied directly for loss reconstruction of electrical machines. This paper aims to verify the accuracy of an inverse methodology used in mapping power loss distribution in an induction motor. Conjugate gradient method is used to iteratively find the unique inverse solution when simulated temperature measurement data are available. Realistic measurement situations are considered and the measurement errors corresponding to thermographic measurements and temperature sensor measurements are used to generate simulated numerical measurement data. An accurate 2-D finite-element thermal model of a 37 kW cage induction motor serves as the forward solution. The inverse model’s objective is to map the power loss density in the motor accurately from noisy temperature measurements made on the motor housing’s outer surface. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the adopted inverse methodology to variations in the number of available measurements is also considered. DC electric power systems, including HVDC, HVDC light, dc distribution systems, and dc microgrids, have a significant position in present and, especially, future electric power systems, namely, smart grids. One of the most significant issues of electric power systems, including dc electric power systems, is the calculation of accurate and fair energy costs of the consumers. In this paper, novel, simple, practical, and precise relations between economic and electrical variables in dc electric power systems are extracted. The novel relations prove that there are interesting relations between voltages of nodes, as electrical variables, and prices of nodes, as economic variables, in dc electric power systems. Applying the extracted novel relations in this paper, a new, fair, precise, practical nodal price, i.e., the fair nodal price, is determined to calculate the energy costs of consumers in dc electric power systems, including dc distribution systems and microgrids. Moreover, as an application of the extracted novel relations, a practical method to determine the fair nodal prices of all nodes and, as a result, the real energy cost of each consumer at each node of dc electric power systems is presented. This paper presents an algorithm for fast, directional detection of phase-to-ground faults in isolated neutral distribution grids. The method reacts directionally and very fast to fault conditions (1–2 samples after fault inception, even without large di0/dt). Moreover, the method is able to detect low- and high-impedance faults (HIF), permanent or transient faults. The algorithm is independent of the sampling frequency, very robust to noise, and does not need calibration of the sensors. The direction detection method relies on the fault model identification, based on the zero-sequence grid capacitance estimate for isolated neutral grids. The estimate is obtained from the fault circuit differential equation, solved with the least-squares method, where appropriate numerical modifications have been introduced. The sign of the estimate provides the directional information, whereas the magnitude of the modified estimate indicates the fault. The directional principle is validated in simulation and the fault detection method is validated with real fault records from the RedNA project. The paper reworks the equations that define the nondetection zone, so that the method is comparable to the classical residual overcurrent and overvoltage functions, typically used to detect HIF. This paper proposes a methodology to determine the optimal capacity of renewable distributed generation (RDG). The objective in this paper is to maximize cost-savings of energy not supplied (ENS) as well as cost-savings of energy loss according to RDG installation in a distribution network. Additionally, in order to achieve this multi-objective optimization problem, both a restoration matrix and restoration availability are newly proposed. This paper develops a new electricity market clearing mechanism, called risk-based locational marginal pricing (RLMP). The RLMP is derived from the risk-based security-constrained economic dispatch model, where risk is modeled to capture the system's overall security level. Compared to the traditional locational marginal pricing (LMP) which is composed of three components: energy, congestion, and loss, the RLMP consists of an additional risk component. The risk component is a price signal to reflect the system's overall security level. This paper discusses the features of RLMP, and analyzes its benefits over traditional LMPs. The advantages of a static var compensator (SVC) for electric arc furnace (EAF) and ladle melt furnace (LMF) applications are well known. The SVC minimizes the impact of the EAF and LMF on the utility and improves the efficiency of both furnaces. In this application, it was desirable to quantify the performance of the SVC. This paper describes power quality measurements that were taken on the electrical distribution system to evaluate the performance of the SVC. The purpose of the power quality measurements was to monitor the voltage regulation, harmonics, flicker, and other power quality quantities at the 138-kV utility point of common coupling (PCC), as well as the 34.5-kV system serving the SVC, EAF, and LMF. The measurements and subsequent analysis established a baseline for the SVC performance and identified areas of concern. This paper develops a generalized admittance matrix approach in Fortescue coordinate system to solve unbalanced/unsymmetrical distribution networks including different number of phases. This generalized Fortescue \pi equivalent is defined in this paper for solving the heterogeneous phase, and thus Fortescue, network model. The performance of the approach is demonstrated in different model networks with number of nodes ranging between 168 and 14200. It is found that the current iteration method exploiting the decoupling in admittance matrix in Fortescue coordinate is substantially faster than the typical unbalanced three-phase solution in phase domain. Distribution system reconfiguration can be achieved by changing the statuses of switches. By altering the topology of a distribution system, the real power loss can be reduced. This paper proposes a novel charged system search (CSS) algorithm, the particle moving evaluation mechanism CSS (PMEM-CSS), for determining the switching strategy in order to solve the distribution system loss minimization problems. In CSS, the position of each charged particle is a solution that represents a specific topology of a distribution system. During the problem-solving process, new solutions are generated in CSS. In order to avoid generating illegal solutions, a novel decoding scheme is proposed in this paper. The proposed decoding scheme can also improve the search performance when PMEM-CSS seeks the best solution. Three different distribution systems, a 33-bus, a 66-bus, and a TPC 248-bus system are carried out in this paper. The performance of different algorithms (GA, PSO, CSS, and PMEM-CSS) is compared. The simulation results show that not only the efficiency of the proposed method is the best among these algorithms bust also the quality of the solution is superior to other algorithms. The aim of this two-part paper is to present a comprehensive reliability-centerd maintenance framework tailored to power distribution systems. The first paper discusses the fundamental concepts, presents the developed algorithm, and introduces the required mathematical formulations. This second paper is focused on the application of the proposed methodology on a real distribution system. Considerable effort is devoted to examine the proposed method in a step-by-step manner to clarify the implementation procedure. The required data for the procedure are taken from available references and follow reasonable technical assumptions. Practical aspects are incorporated, and the results obtained are thoroughly discussed. With the integration of intermittent renewable generation, transmission voltage problems have become more dynamic. The deployment and tuning of numbers of VAr compensators at various locations may not be cost-effective. This paper presents an alternative method, which utilizes existing parallel transformers in distribution networks, to provide reactive power absorption services for transmission systems with low demands. The operation of parallel transformers in small different tap positions, that is, with staggered taps, can provide a means of absorbing reactive power. The aggregated VAr absorption from many pairs of parallel transformers could be used to provide voltage support to the upstream transmission network. This paper focuses on the economic and technical analyses of using the tap staggering method. For the economic analysis, the associated costs of applying the tap staggering technique are investigated through static load-flow studies. The IEEE Reliability Test System is used to carry out the studies and the results are compared with the installation of shunt reactors. In the technical studies, the dynamic impacts of tap staggering or reactor switching on transmission voltages are analyzed. This paper presents an investigation of utilizing dc links to merge heavily meshed urban distribution networks in dense-load areas to increase reliability and expand operational flexibility. It provides a cost-benefit evaluation of utilizing dc-link technology to interconnect three segments of New York City electric distribution networks with complex grid configurations. The outcome of this work highlights the advantages provided by dc links, such as increased reliability and power quality, improved voltage support, and demand relief for feeders at or above capacity limitations. Furthermore, the study shows that dc links may provide a better alternative to transformer installations, feeder upgrades, and/or capacitor additions, and offer the opportunity to postpone large capital investments for system upgrades (such as building a new substation) due to demand increase. This paper describes the advantages of using nonsynchronous microgrids in networked systems containing densely concentrated loads. The nonsynchronous bus arrangement, in addition to allowing for the integration of substantially larger distributed generation, completely isolates transient disturbances from and to the network and the microgrid. Significant is the fact that distributed generators installed in the microgrid do not contribute to the short-circuit current that needs to be interrupted by the substation breakers. The behavior of the grid and the microgrid is investigated by comparing: the occurrence of faults, voltage reduction, and losses, in the presence and absence of the microgrid. The Sandia frequency-shift method, among all frequency-based active islanding detection methods (IDMs), is one of the most effective methods for inverter based distributed generators (DGs). The nondetection zone (NDZ) of the Sandia frequency shift (SFS) highly depends on its design parameters. If the design parameters are not properly tuned, they may result in failure of the method or deterioration of the system power quality (PQ) through injection of a high amount of harmonics. The main objective of this paper is to propose a new algorithm for SFS method parameter determination, which would add precision to the previous parameter design criterion. In this paper, also a new formula for multi-DG applications is proposed which results in optimally setting of all SFS parameters to eliminate NDZ. Using the new criterion, the negative impact of the conventional criterion on PQ is reduced, and the efficiency of the SFS IDM is increased. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm results in more accurate detection of the islanding phenomenon in the shortest possible time. This paper presents a new mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to solve the multistage long-term expansion planning problem of electrical distribution systems (EDSs) considering the following alternatives: increasing the capacity of existing substations, constructing new substations, allocating capacitor banks and/or voltage regulators, constructing and/or reinforcing circuits, and modifying, if necessary, the system's topology. The aim is to minimize the investment and operation costs of the EDS over an established planning horizon. The proposed model uses a linearization technique and an approximation for transforming the original problem into an MILP model. A linear accelerator, including several radio-frequency (RF) stations, can be viewed as one virtual RF station with a certain RF voltage (in amplitude and phase). This paper proposes an optimization scheme that, for a specified total beam energy gain, determines the klystrons output powers as well as the modulators high voltages optimally. The algorithm employs the nonlinear static characteristics curves of klystrons to determine analytically the input RF amplitude of the drive chain. This paper focuses on the zero-voltage ride-through (ZVRT) capability of a transformerless back-to-back (BTB) system intended for installation on a power distribution system with many distributed power generators. The BTB system consists of two modular multilevel cascade converters based on double-star chopper cells (MMCC-DSCC) and their ac sides are connected to a common ac mains via ac-link inductors. This paper provides an experimental discussion on the DSCC-based BTB system under voltage sags by using a three-phase 200-V 10-kW downscaled system. This paper deals with the distribution network reconfiguration problem in a multi-objective scope, aiming to determine the optimal radial configuration by means of minimizing the active power losses and a set of commonly used reliability indices formulated with reference to the number of customers. The indices are developed in a way consistent with a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) approach. A key contribution of the paper is the efficient implementation of the \mmb\varepsilon-constraint method using lexicographic optimization in order to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. After the Pareto efficient solution set is generated, the resulting configurations are evaluated using a backward/forward sweep load-flow algorithm to verify that the solutions obtained are both non-dominated and feasible. Since the \mmb\varepsilon-constraint method generates the Pareto front but does not incorporate decision maker (DM) preferences, a multi-attribute decision making procedure, namely, the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method, is used in order to rank the obtained solutions according to the DM preferences, facilitating the final selection. In this paper we present a framework to efficiently characterize the available operational flexibility in a multi-area power system. We focus on the available reserves and the tie-line flows. The proposed approach is an alternative to the current calculation of the available transfer capacity (ATC), as it considers location and availability of reserves, transmission constraints, and interdependencies of tie-line flows between different areas, while it takes into account the N-1 security criterion. The method is based on computational geometry using polytopic projections. It requires only a limited amount of information exchange and does not need central coordination. The method has two versions: a passive approach, and an active approach where neighboring areas can share reserves. In that respect we also introduce the term “exportable flexibility”. The transmission of simultaneous and latency-sensitive data puts forth a significant challenge for the smart grid communications. In this paper, we investigate the application of device-to-device (D2D) communications for the energy management in the electric distribution network. Specifically, we develop a D2D-assisted relaying framework to exploit the spatial diversity and the differentiated data rate requirements, which improves the spectral efficiency, especially for the scenarios that there are faults in the electric distribution network. We study the data transmission scheduling problem under the proposed D2D-assisted relaying framework, aiming to minimize the overall information loss rate, while taking into account the uncertainties in the communication latency. To this end, we first cast the data transmission scheduling problem as a two-stage stochastic programming problem and derive the solution. Then, we develop a real-time distributed data transmission scheduling scheme based on the sample path realizations. Extensive simulation results show significant performance improvement by using the proposed D2D-assisted relaying framework compared with two baseline frameworks for a variety of different cases. Industrial substation grounding studies usually assume a simple isolated substation, follow the routine IEEE 80 design and analysis procedures using the software tools bundled with the power systems analysis suite of choice, and carry on with the rest of the project. However, there can be complications to substation grounding designs. This paper discusses two case studies where a ground fault in one substation generates a voltage that is transferred to other areas. The issues are assessed using common software tools supplemented with simple spreadsheet calculations. Some common limitations of the standard software tools, when applied to these more complex problems, are discussed in this paper, along with appropriate workarounds. Mitigation methods are discussed. Multilevel inverters have created a new wave of interest in industry and research. While the classical topologies have proved to be a viable alternative in a wide range of high-power medium-voltage applications, there has been an active interest in the evolution of newer topologies. Reduction in overall part count as compared to the classical topologies has been an important objective in the recently introduced topologies. In this paper, some of the recently proposed multilevel inverter topologies with reduced power switch count are reviewed and analyzed. The paper will serve as an introduction and an update to these topologies, both in terms of the qualitative and quantitative parameters. Also, it takes into account the challenges which arise when an attempt is made to reduce the device count. This paper proposes an efficient solution approach based on Benders’ decomposition to solve a network-constrained ac unit commitment problem under uncertainty. The wind power production is the only source of uncertainty considered in this paper, which is modeled through a suitable set of scenarios. The proposed model is formulated as a two-stage stochastic programming problem, whose first-stage refers to the day-ahead market, and whose second-stage represents real-time operation. The proposed Benders’ approach allows decomposing the original problem, which is mixed-integer nonlinear and generally intractable, into a mixed-integer linear master problem and a set of nonlinear, but continuous subproblems, one per scenario. In addition, to temporally decompose the proposed ac unit commitment problem, a heuristic technique is used to relax the inter-temporal ramping constraints of the generating units. This paper presents a method that in real-time determines remedial actions, which restore stable operation with respect to aperiodic small signal rotor angle stability (ASSRAS) when insecure or unstable operation has been detected. An ASSRAS assessment method is used to monitor the stability boundary for each generator in real-time. The ASSRAS boundary represents the condition when a generator reaches the maximum steady state active power injection. The proposed control method exploits analytically derived expressions for the ASSRAS boundary and other characteristic curves in the injection impedance plane to determine an active power redispatch among selected generators to restore stable and secure operation. Since the method is purely based on analytically derived expression, the computation of the remedial actions is fast and well suited for real-time operation. The method was tested on the IEEE 14-bus and the Nordic32 test systems where results show that the method can efficiently determine the required active power redispatch to avoid an imminent instability. Emerging smart-grid-enabling technologies will allow an unprecedented degree of observability and control at all levels in a power system. Combined with flexible demand and storage, they could allow procuring energy at minimum cost and environmental impact. That however presupposes real-time coordination of demand of individual households and industries down at the distribution level, with generation at the transmission level. This is closely related with the balancing market economic dispatch (ED) problem, which currently does not take into account distribution network constraints and flexible demand characteristics. Still, assuming a suitably modified form of that problem was available, due to both computational and communications requirements, its centralized solution in its full detail would not be tractable. While there is currently a wealth of literature dealing with distributed optimization applications in power systems, it typically focuses on smaller parts of the overall energy management problem (e.g., transmission area synchronization or electric vehicles management) often without considering its full scale or establishing any association with energy market mechanisms. Increasing penetration of renewable power sources (RESs) is bringing more uncertainties to power systems. Real-time economic dispatch should be able to handle the fluctuations caused by the load as well as RESs, and obtain new optimal operating points after deviating from original generation schedules. This paper proposes a generation adjustment algorithm based on the base point and participation factor method. The objective of the method is to obtain fast adjustments to generators’ real power outputs in real-time economic dispatch. The proposed method achieves significant and consistent improvements comparing to the original participation factor method by using a more precise model of transmission losses in the optimization process. The computational burden and execution time of the proposed method is much less than OPF and heuristic economic dispatch methods. The proposed method and its effectiveness are tested using IEEE 30-bus system, IEEE 118-bus system, and GuangDong 1018-bus system. In this paper, we propose a method to optimally set the tap position of voltage regulation transformers in distribution systems. We cast the problem as a rank-constrained semidefinite program (SDP), in which the transformer tap ratios are captured by 1) introducing a secondary-side “virtual” bus per transformer, and 2) constraining the values that these virtual bus voltages can take according to the limits on the tap positions. Then, by relaxing the non-convex rank-1 constraint in the rank-constrained SDP formulation, one obtains a convex SDP problem. The tap positions are determined as the ratio between the primary-side bus voltage and the secondary-side virtual bus voltage that result from the optimal solution of the relaxed SDP, and then rounded to the nearest discrete tap values. To efficiently solve the relaxed SDP, we propose a distributed algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We present several case studies with single- and three-phase distribution systems to demonstrate the effectiveness of the distributed ADMM-based algorithm, and compare its results with centralized solution methods. Several transient stability software packages are widely used for power grid planning and operations. Prior research and software documentations have shown that packages can vary in the implementations of dynamic models, and hence could potentially yield different results for the same system simulation. This paper presents a systematic methodology to determine the sources of the discrepancies seen in results obtained from different transient stability packages. This methodology can be applied to various types of dynamic models and is illustrated with generator-associated dynamic models in this paper. Consistent metrics, data mining techniques, and engineering heuristics are used to determine the discrepancy sources. This paper proposes a novel comprehensive operation and self-healing strategy for a distribution system with both dispatchable and nondispatchable distributed generators (DGs). In the normal operation mode, the control objective of the system is to minimize the operation costs and maximize the revenues. A rolling-horizon optimization method is used to schedule the outputs of dispatchable DGs based on forecasts. In the self-healing mode, the on-outage portion of the distribution system will be optimally sectionalized into networked self-supplied microgrids (MGs) so as to provide reliable power supply to the maximum loads continuously. The outputs of the dispatchable DGs will be rescheduled accordingly too. In order to take into account the uncertainties of DG outputs and load consumptions, we formulate the problems as a stochastic program. A scenario reduction method is applied to achieve a tradeoff between the accuracy of the solution and the computational burden. A modified IEEE 123-node distribution system is used as a test system. This paper proposes a bi-level branch-and-bound ((B&B) method to solve the economic dispatch problem with prohibited zones and network losses. The approach employs binary variables for each prohibited zone and utilizes the B-coefficient for network losses, which can be transformed into a mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programming (MIQCQP), where linear relaxation technique is applied on each bilinear term. Due to the complexity in solving the MIQCQP problem, this paper proposes a bi-level B&B method to achieve global optimum. A spatial B&B method is utilized in the higher level to solve the quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem, whereas a simple B&B method is employed in the lower level to solve a mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem. The bi-level B&B algorithm that combines spatial and simple B&B methods is actually a deterministic optimization method and can produce global optimal solutions. Numerical results on 6-unit, 15-unit, and 40-unit test systems show that the bi-level B&B method can solve the MIQCQP problem with superior solution quality and convergence characteristics. Unintentional islanding detection is a primary requirement for the interconnection of synchronous distributed generators (DGs). For this purpose, voltage and frequency-based relays are largely employed due to their low cost and simplicity However, these devices are not totally reliable due to their associated nondetection zone (NDZ). The NDZ is an effective tool to evaluate the performance of these relays against islanding occurrence. In this context, this paper presents a simple and practical analytical method to estimate the NDZ of frequency and voltage-based relays without relying on numerous, time-consuming electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations. The main contribution is that one can easily estimate the NDZ of these protection systems based on a few analytical expressions. The effectiveness and generality of the analytical method are verified by comparing its results with those obtained by repeated, intensive EMT simulations for different power distribution networks and different relay types. This paper describes a systematic procedure using power flow graphs for generating all possible double-input single-output (DISO) dc/dc converters. To maximize the generality of applications, the input ports can possibly be connected with voltage source(s) or current source(s), and the output port can be connected with a voltage load or current load. The control methods are described in this paper. A DISO converter with two voltage sources and one voltage load is taken as an example to analyze a few key properties of practical relevance, including input voltage range, efficiency, power distribution, and switching stress. A popular application of DISO converters involves the use of a battery as storage element, and for this specific case, possible choices for the converters, the control method, and the attainable efficiency are discussed.
