Abstract: International audience; This article presents a model for income distribution among factors of production in the context of a globalised economy. Previous models are most often static and do not take into account the geographical location of the factors of production nor the mobility costs that result. We have created a dynamic Nash bargaining model that integratesthe geographical distance between companies and the mobility costs for each production factor. The main result of this model is that income distribution closely depends on mobility costs: production factors with low mobility costs are those whose incomes increase most rapidly.

Abstract: We introduce and analyse the almost sure convergence of a new stochastic algorithm for the global minimization of Morse functions on compact Riemannian manifolds. This diffusion process is called fraudulent because it requires the knowledge of minimal value of the function. Its investigation is nevertheless important, since in particular it appears as the limit behavior of non-fraudulent and time-inhomogeneous swarm mean-field algorithms used in global optimization.

Abstract: Using small deformations of the total energy, as introduced in \cite{MR1616968}, we establish that damped second order gradient systems \begin{gather*} u^\pp(t)+\gamma u^\p(t)+\nabla G(u(t))=0, \end{gather*} may be viewed as quasi-gradient systems. In order to study the asymptotic behavior of these systems, we prove that any (nontrivial) desingularizing function appearing in KL inequality satisfies $\vphi(s)\ge c\sqrt s$ whenever the original function is definable and $C^2.$ Variants to this result are given. These facts are used in turn to prove that a desingularizing function of the potential $G$ also desingularizes the total energy and its deformed versions. Our approach brings forward several results interesting for their own sake: we provide an asymptotic alternative for quasi-gradient systems, either a trajectory converges, or its norm tends to infinity. The convergence rates are also analyzed by an original method based on a one-dimensional worst-case gradient system. We conclude by establishing the convergence of solutions of damped second order systems in various cases including the definable case. The real-analytic case is recovered and some results concerning convex functions are also derived.

Abstract: Nudges are increasingly used to alter the behavior of economic agents as an alternative to monetary incentives. However, little is known as to whether nudges can backfire, that is, how and when they may generate effects opposite to those they intend to achieve. We provide the first field evidence of a nudge that is designed to encourage pro-environmental behavior, which instead backfires. We randomly allocate a social comparison nudge inviting winegrowers to adopt biological pest control as an alternative to chemical pesticide use. We find that our nudge decreases by half the adoption of biological pest control among the largest vineyards, where the bulk of adoption occurs. We show that this result can be rationalized in an economic model where winegrowers and winegrower-cooperative managers bargain over future rents generated by the adoption of biological pest control. This study highlights the importance of experimenting on a small scale with nudges aimed at encouraging adoption of virtuous behaviors in order to detect unexpected adverse effects, particularly in contexts where negotiations on the sharing of the costs of adoption are likely to occur.

Abstract: This paper studies some asymptotic properties of adaptive algorithms widely used in optimization and machine learning, and among them Adagrad and Rmsprop, which are involved in most of the blackbox deep learning algorithms. Our setup is the non-convex landscape optimization point of view, we consider a one time scale parametrization and we consider the situation where these algorithms may be used or not with mini-batches. We adopt the point of view of stochastic algorithms and establish the almost sure convergence of these methods when using a decreasing step-size point of view towards the set of critical points of the target function. With a mild extra assumption on the noise, we also obtain the convergence towards the set of minimizer of the function. Along our study, we also obtain a "convergence rate" of the methods, in the vein of the works of \cite{GhadimiLan}., 36 pages

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to construct a Brownian motion X_t taking values in a Riemannian manifold M , together with a compact valued process D_t such that, at least for small enough D-stopping time T and conditioned to the filtration of D_t up to time T , the law of X_T is the normalized Lebesgue measure on D_T. This intertwining result is a generalization of Pitman theorem. We first construct regular intertwined processes related to Stokes' theorem. Then using several limiting procedures we construct synchronous intertwined, free intertwined, mirror intertwined processes. The local times of the Brownian motion on the (morphological) skeleton or the boundary of D plays an important role. Several example with moving intervals, discs, annulus, symmetric convex sets are investigated.

Abstract: This article studies and solves the problem of optimal portfolio allocation with CV@R constraints when dealing with imperfectly simulated financial assets. We use a Stochastic biased Mirror Descent to find optimal resource allocation for a portfolio whose underlying assets cannot be generated exactly and may only be approximated with a numerical scheme that satisfies suitable error bounds, under a risk management constraint. We establish almost sure asymptotic properties as well as the rate of convergence for the averaged algorithm. We then focus on the optimal tuning of the overall procedure to obtain an optimized numerical cost. Our results are then illustrated numerically on simulated as well as real data sets.

Abstract: This paper provides a broad replication of Calderón et al. (2015). We address some complex and relevant issues, namely functional form, non-stationary variables and cross-sectional depen- dence. In particular, by adopting the CCE framework, we consider both parametric - static and dynamic - and non-parametric specifications, thus allowing for different degrees of flexibility. Contrary to Calderón et al. (2015), we find a lack of significance of the infrastructure index, with an estimated elasticity very close to zero for all estimates. Moreover, by employing the data-driven model selection procedure proposed by Gioldasis et al. (2021), it is found that non-parametric specifications provide the best predictive performance and that CCE models always overperform with respect to traditional panel data methods that employ cross-sectional demeaning to account for cross-sectional dependence.

Abstract: How much and when should we limit economic and social activity to ensure that the healthcare system is not overwhelmed during an epidemic? We study a setting where ICU resources are constrained and suppression is costly. Providing a fully analytical solution we show that the common wisdom of "flattening the curve", where suppression measures are continuously taken to hold down the spread throughout the epidemic, is suboptimal. Instead, the optimal suppression is discontinuous. The epidemic should be left unregulated in a first phase and when the ICU constraint is approaching society should quickly lock down (a discontinuity). After the lockdown, regulation should gradually be lifted, holding the rate of infected constant, thus respecting the ICU resources while not unnecessarily limiting economic activity. In a final phase, regulation is lifted. We call this strategy "filling the box". The cost under the optimal strategy is obtained in closed form as an explicit function of economic and medical fundamentals. We show that the policy is optimal also when there, in addition, is a small cost associated with the number of infected. The tighter the ICU constraint, the wider is the range of such cost for which the policy is still optimal. This suggests the primary focus of poor countries (with few ICU resources) should be to protect the health-care system, while richer countries (with extensive ICU resources) may strive to reduce the number of infected even more. Abstract: International audience; Rice production is central to the Vietnamese economy, not only in terms of contribution to Vietnam's GDP, but also to the food security of its population. However, Vietnam is one of the countries most threatened by climate change in the coming decades, and its rice production in particular. This paper focuses on rice yields and investigates their evolution over time and between provinces over the period 1987-2015, depending on climatic conditions. Special attention is devoted to the impact of heat stress. This impact is measured taking into account the potential adaptation of farmers to these extreme events. To this end, a dynamic production function allowing for spatial and temporal heterogeneity in rice yield responses of to climatic conditions is estimated. Data descriptive analysis shows that the provinces with favorable conditions for rice growth are also those that face the most risk of heat stress. Estimation results show that these provinces adapt to heat stress conditions and that their adaptation eort begins to decrease when heat stress risk becomes too high. Taking adaptation into account then makes it possible to qualify the forecasts made regarding rice yields in the presence of climate change.

Abstract: National audience; A supervised machine learning algorithm determines a model from a learning sample that will be used to predict new observations. To this end, it aggregates individual characteristics of the observations of the learning sample. But this information aggregation does not consider any potential selection on unobservables and any status quo biases which may be contained in the training sample. The latter bias has raised concerns around the so-called fairness of machine learning algorithms, especially towards disadvantaged groups. In this chapter, we review the issue of fairness in machine learning through the lenses of structural econometrics models in which the unknown index is the solution of a functional equation and issues of endogeneity are explicitly taken into account. We model fairness as a linear operator whose null space contains the set of strictly fair indexes. A fair solution is obtained by projecting the unconstrained index into the null space of this operator or by directly finding the closest solution of the functional equation into this null space.We also acknowledge that policymakers may incur costs when moving away from the status quo. Approximate fairness is thus introduced as an intermediate set-up between the status quo and a fully fair solution via a fairness-specific penalty in the objective function of the learning model.

16. Extreme conditional expectile estimation in heavy-tailed heteroscedastic regression models

Abstract: Expectiles define a least squares analogue of quantiles. They have been the focus of a substantial quantity of research in the context of actuarial and financial risk assessment over the last 10 years. Unlike quantiles, expectiles induce coherent risk measures and are calculated using tail expectations rather than merely tail probabilities ; contrary to the popular quantile-based Expected Shortfall, they define elicitable risk measures. The behaviour and estimation of extreme expectiles using independent and identically distributed heavy-tailed observations has been investigated in a recent series of papers. The case of extreme conditional expectile estimation has, however, not been addressed so far in the literature. We build here a general theory for the estimation of extreme conditional expectiles in heteroscedastic regression models with heavy-tailed noise; an important feature of our approach is that it is intended to cope with covariates having a large but fixed dimension. We demonstrate how our results can be applied to a wide class of important examples, among which linear heteroscedastic models, heteroscedastic single-index models and autoregressive time series models. Our estimators are showcased on a numerical simulation study, as well as on real sets of actuarial and financial data.

Abstract: International audience; À l’exception notable des essais contrôlés et randomisés, la statistique a longtemps évacué le problème de la causalité considérant qu’il relevait du domaine d’application et des théories afférentes. Bien souvent les cours et les manuels de statistique se contentent de rappeler que corrélation n’est pas causalité et passent rapidement à d’autres sujets. Or, que ce soit en économie, épidémiologie, génétique, médecine, marketing, pour ne citer que quelques domaines, la recherche de modèles causaux et de variables actionnables est incontournable. Aujourd’hui la mise à disposition de données massives ou de grande dimension repose la question de la causalité de manière aigüe.Dans le prolongement des travaux pionniers de Granger (prix Nobel d’économie en 2003), Pearl (prix Turing en 2011), Rosenbaum et Rubin, pour ne nommer qu'eux, une très large palette de modèles et méthodes pour l'analyse causale, éventuellement hors d'une expérience contrôlée, s'est peu à peu constituée depuis le début des années 1980. Citons entre autres les thèmes suivants : issues potentielles, données contrefactuelles, scores de propension, double-robustesse, diagramme de causalité, réseaux bayésiens, systèmes d'équations structurelles.Cet ouvrage est le fruit de la collaboration entre spécialistes réputés : Léon Bottou (Facebook AI Research), Antoine Chambaz (université de Paris), Daniel Commenges (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale), Isabelle Drouet (université Paris-Sorbonne), Ron Kenett (KPA Group), Vivian Viallon (International Agency for Research on Cancer) réunis à l’occasion des 18e Journées d’étude en statistique organisées par la SFdS. Abstract: This article considers inference in linear models with d_X regressors, some or many of which could be endogenous, and d_Z instrumental variables (IVs). d_Z can range from less than d_X to any order smaller than an exponential in the sample size. For moderate d_X, identification robust confidence sets are obtained by solving a hierarchy of semidefinite programs. For large d_X, we propose the STIV estimator. The analysis of its error uses sensitivity characteristics introduced in this paper. Robust confidence sets are derived by solving linear programs. Results on rates of convergence, variable selection, and confidence sets which "adapt" to the sparsity are given. Generalizations include models with endogenous IVs and systems of equations with approximation errors. We also analyse confidence bands for vectors of linear functionals and functions using bias correction. The application is to a demand system with approximation errors, cross-equation restrictions, and thousands of endogenous regressors.

Abstract: In France, hypermarkets are the main shopping sites for food products. Therefore, the food-purchasing profiles of their regular customers may be a relevant indicator of the sustainability and health potentials of consumed diets. Knowing this information can be a step to address the issue of global health. The main objective of this study was to assess the sustainability and health potential of food-purchasing behaviors among regular adult customers, with or without children, of a leading French retailer. Secondarily, the cost of a sustainable food shopping cart was evaluated as regards the regular one, as calculated in this study. Purchasing receipts corresponding to 38,168 different food products were collected during one consecutive month for each four seasons in 2019 to assess compliance with a newly developed holistic indicator of food system sustainability, i.e., the 3V rule, recommending food consumption to be ‘Vegetal’/plant-based (≈15% animal calories/day), ‘Vrai’/real (max. 15% ultra-processed food calories/day, UPF) and ‘Varié’/varied. Participants were 708 regular buyers (aged ≥18 with different socio-economic profiles, with and without children) in 122 French hypermarkets. The plant rule was based on the animal and plant origin of food ingredients, including mixed products; the ‘real’ rule was evaluated with the Siga score according to the degree of processing to identify UPFs. The varied rule was defined based on a combination of food ‘categories × families’. The effect of children and season on the purchased animal and UPF calories and on the variety index was also evaluated. Multivariate and decision tree analyses were applied to compare consumers for their 3V rule profile similarities and differences, and to look for impacts of the presence or absence of children. Customers' purchases were far from the 3V rule, with a median of 41% animal and 61% UPF calories and a median variety index of 25% (compared to the consumer with the highest index set to 100%). There was no difference in purchased animal and UPF percentages neither according to seasons nor the presence of children. However, the presence of children was associated with a higher variety index (+33%, P < 0.05). Finally, the more the consumers purchased varied, the less they purchased UPFs. Compared to the average food basket, a 3V-based basket would cost 4.6% less. To make this basket accessible to everyone and to orientate consumer's purchasing behaviors toward more sustainable and healthier products, and hence food systems, hypermarkets should promote healthy eating and reassess their food offerings.

Abstract: This paper studies point identification of the distribution of the coefficients in some random coefficients models with exogenous regressors when their support is a proper subset, possibly discrete but countable. We exhibit trade-offs between restrictions on the distribution of the random coefficients and the support of the regressors. We consider linear models including those with nonlinear transforms of a baseline regressor, with an infinite number of regressors and deconvolution, the binary choice model, and panel data models such as single-index panel data models and an extension of the Kotlarski lemma.

Abstract: International audience; We study the problem of approximating the level set of an unknown function by sequentially querying its values. We introduce a family of algorithms called Bisect and Approximate through which we reduce the level set approximation problem to a local function approximation problem. We then show how this approach leads to rate-optimal sample complexity guarantees for Hölder functions, and we investigate how such rates improve when additional smoothness or other structural assumptions hold true.

Abstract: International audience; While antispeciesism is an ethical notion, veganism is behavioral. In this paper, we examine the links between the two. Building on Blackorby and Donaldson (1992), we consider a two-species model in which humans consume animals. The level of antispeciesism is conceived as the weight on animals' welfare in the utilitarian social welfare function. We show that more antispeciesism increases meat consumption if and only if animals' utility is positive. That is, the critical condition is whether farm animals' lives are worth living. We then empirically explore this condition using a survey. We find that farm-animal experts and frequent meat eaters are more likely to believe that the lives of farm animals are worth living. We finally discuss some issues in the study of animal welfare in economics and social choice.

Abstract: What type of delegation contract should be offered when facing a risk of the magnitude of the pandemic we are currently experiencing and how does the likelihood of an exogenous early termination of the relationship modify the terms of a full-commitment contract? We study these questions by considering a dynamic principal-agent model that naturally extends the classical Holmstr{\"o}m-Milgrom setting to include a risk of default whose origin is independent of the inherent agency problem. We obtain an explicit characterization of the optimal wage along with the optimal action provided by the agent. The optimal contract is linear by offering both a fixed share of the output which is similar to the standard shutdown-free Holmstr{\"o}m-Milgrom model and a linear prevention mechanism that is proportional to the random lifetime of the contract. We then tweak the model to add a possibility for risk mitigation through investment and study its optimality.

Abstract: International audience; In theory, the choice of ReLU(0) in [0, 1] for a neural network has a negligible influence both on backpropagation and training. Yet, in the real world, 32 bits default precision combined with the size of deep learning problems makes it a hyperparameter of training methods. We investigate the importance of the value of ReLU'(0) for several precision levels (16, 32, 64 bits), on various networks (fully connected, VGG, ResNet) and datasets (MNIST, CIFAR10, SVHN, ImageNet). We observe considerable variations of backpropagation outputs which occur around half of the time in 32 bits precision. The effect disappears with double precision, while it is systematic at 16 bits. For vanilla SGD training, the choice ReLU'(0) = 0 seems to be the most efficient. For our experiments on ImageNet the gain in test accuracy over ReLU'(0) = 1 was more than 10 points (two runs). We also evidence that reconditioning approaches as batch-norm or ADAM tend to buffer the influence of ReLU'(0)’s value. Overall, the message we convey is that algorithmic differentiation of nonsmooth problems potentially hides parameters that could be tuned advantageously.

Abstract: We consider sender–receiver games in which the sender has finitely many types and the receiver makes a decision in a compact set. The new feature is that, after the cheap talk phase, the receiver makes a proposal to the sender, which the latter can reject in favor of an outside option. We focus on situations in which the sender’s approval is absolutely crucial to the receiver, namely, on equilibria in which the sender does not exit at the approval stage. A nonrevealing equilibrium without exit may not exist. Our main results are that if the sender has only two types or if the receiver’s preferences over decisions do not depend on the type of the sender, there exists a (perfect Bayesian Nash) partitional equilibrium without exit, in which the sender transmits information by means of a pure strategy. The previous existence results do not extend: we construct a counter-example (with three types for the sender and type-dependent utility functions) in which there is no equilibrium without exit, even if the sender can randomize over messages. We establish additional existence results for (possibly mediated) equilibria without exit in the three type case.

Abstract: International audience; NGOs often vary in terms of how radical they are. In this paper, we explore the effec-tiveness of NGO discourses in bringing about social change. We focus on animal advocacy:welfarist NGOs primarily seek to improve the conditions in which animals are raised and re-duce meat consumption, while abolitionist NGOs categorically reject animal use and call fora vegan society. We design an experiment to study the respective impact of welfarist and abo-litionist discourses on participants’ beliefs regarding pro-meat justifications and their actions,namely their propensity to engage in the short-run in animal welfare (charity donation, peti-tion against intensive farming) and plant-based diets (subscription to a newsletter promotingplant-based diets, petition supporting vegetarian meals). We first show that both welfarist andabolitionist discourses significantly undermine participants’ pro-meat justifications. Second,the welfarist discourse does not significantly affect participants’ actions, while we detect a po-tential backlash effect of the abolitionist discourse. We show that the NGOs’ positive standardeffect on actions through the change in beliefs is outweighed by a negative behavioral responseto the discourses (reactance effect). Last, greater public-good contributions are associated withgreater engagement in animal welfare in the presence of an NGO discourse.

Abstract: To examine whether four pre-selected front-of-pack nutrition labels improve food purchases in real-life grocery shopping settings, we put 1.9 million labels on 1,266 food products in four categories in 60 supermarkets and analyzed the nutritional quality of 1,668,301 purchases using the FSA nutrient profiling score. Effect sizes were 17 times smaller on average than those found in comparable laboratory studies. The most effective nutrition label, Nutri-Score, increased the purchases of foods in the top third of their category nutrition-wise by 14%, but had no impact on the purchases of foods with medium, low, or unlabeled nutrition quality. Therefore, Nutri-Score only improved the nutritional quality of the basket of labeled foods purchased by 2.5% (-0.142 FSA points). Nutri-Score’s performance improved with the variance (but not the mean) of the nutritional quality of the category. In-store surveys suggest that Nutri-Score’s ability to attract attention and help shoppers rank products by nutritional quality may explain its performance. Abstract: National audience; In this work, we study a new recursive stochastic algorithm for the joint estimation of quantile and superquantile of an unknown distribution. The novelty of this algorithm is to use the Cesaro averaging of thequantile estimation inside the recursive approximation of the superquantile. We provide some sharp non-asymptotic bounds on the quadratic risk of the superquantile estimator for different step size sequences. We also prove new non-asymptotic Lp-controls on the Robbins Monro algorithm for quantile estimation and its averaged version. Finally, we derive a central limit theorem of our joint procedure using the diffusion approximation point of view hidden behind our stochastic algorithm.

Abstract: International audience; In many societies, parents are involved in selecting a spouse for their child, integrating this with decisions about premarital investment such as education. Do spousal preferences of parents and children conflict? We estimate parents’ spousal preferences based on survey choices between random profiles, elicited from parents or other relatives who actively search for a spouse on behalf of their adult child in Kunming, China. We simulate marriage outcomes based on preferences for age and education and compare them with patterns in the general population and with the preferences of a survey of students. The common concern that there may be aversion to highly educated or high-earning wives is somewhat corroborated in parents’ preferences but not in students’ preferences, nor in outcomes, where homogamy is common and wives who are more educated than husbands are as common as husbands who are more educated than wives. Parents prefer wives younger than their husbands, yet most couples are the same age, an outcome consistent with student preferences. Overall, divergences between parental and child preferences exist but are neither major nor very influential in explaining observed outcomes. Fears that highly educated women face diminished marriage prospects appear less serious than often claimed.

Abstract: International audience; We examine the properties of a recommender algorithm currently under construction at the Public Employment Service (PES) in France, before its implementation in the field. The algorithm associates to each offer-job seeker pair a predicted "matching probability" using a very large set of covariates. We first compare this new AI algorithm with a matching tool mimicking the one currently used at the PES, based on a score measuring the "proximity" between the job seeker's profile or preference and the characteristics of the offer. We detail and discuss the trade-off between matching probability and preference score when switching from one system to the other. We also examine the issue of congestion. We show on the one hand that the AI algorithm tends to increase congestion and on the other hand that this strongly reduces its performance. We finally show that the use of optimal transport to derive recommendations from the matching probability matrix allows to mitigate this problem significantly. The main lesson at this stage is that an algorithm ignoring preferences and competition in the labor market would have very limited performances but that tweaking the algorithm to fit these dimensions improves substantially its properties, at least "in the lab".

However, shortcomings in data selection and methodology raise questions about their conclusions on trends and drivers. We call for more rigorous methodology to be applied in meta-analyses of ecological data.

Abstract: International audience; This study investigates U.S. churches' response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic by looking at their public Facebook posts. For religious organizations, in-person gatherings are at the heart of their activities. Yet religious in-person gatherings have been identified as some of the early hot spots of the pandemic, but there has also been controversy over the legitimacy of public restrictions on such gatherings. Our sample contains information on church characteristics and Facebook posts for nearly 4000 churches that posted at least once in 2020. The share of churches that offer an online church activity on a given Sunday more than doubled within two weeks at the beginning of the pandemic (the first half of March 2020) and stayed well above baseline levels. Online church activities are positively correlated with the local pandemic situation at the beginning, but uncorrelated with most state interventions. After the peak of the first wave (mid April), we observe a slight decrease in online activities. We investigate heterogeneity in the church responses and find that church size and worship style explain differences consistent with churches facing different demand and cost structures. Local political voting behavior, on the other hand, explains little of the variation. Descriptive analysis suggests that overall online activities, and the patterns of heterogeneity, remain unchanged through end-November 2020.

Abstract: The June 2018 CAP proposals are only marginally consistent with the ambitions of the Green Deal. This is also the case of the regulation revisions being adopted by either the Council or the European Parliament in October 2020. Making EU agriculture consistent with the Green Deal but would require a whole food chain policy that encompasses more stringent instruments on the supply side and extensive changes in eating patterns., Les propositions de réforme de la PAC de juin 2018 ne sont que marginalement cohérentes avec les ambitions du Green Deal. C'est également le cas des révisions du règlement qui seront adoptées soit par le Conseil, soit par le Parlement européen en octobre 2020. Rendre l'agriculture de l'UE cohérente avec le Pacte vert nécessiterait une politique de l'ensemble de la chaîne alimentaire qui englobe des instruments plus stricts du côté de l'offre et des changements importants dans les habitudes alimentaires.

Abstract: The random mapping construction of strong stationary times is applied here to finite Heisenberg random walks over ℤM, for odd M ⩾ 3. When they correspond to 3 × 3 matrices, the strong stationary times are of order M6, estimate which can be improved to M4 if we are only interested in the convergence to equilibrium of the last column. Simulations by Chhaibi suggest that the proposed strong stationary time is of the right M2 order. These results are extended to N × N matrices, with N ⩾ 3. All the obtained bounds are thought to be non-optimal, nevertheless this original approach is promising, as it relates the investigation of the previously elusive strong stationary times of such random walks to new absorbing Markov chains with a statistical physics flavor and whose quantitative study is to be pushed further. In addition, for N = 3, a strong equilibrium time is proposed in the same spirit for the non-Markovian coordinate in the upper right corner. This result would extend to separation discrepancy the corresponding fast convergence for this coordinate in total variation and open a new method for the investigation of this phenomenon in higher dimension.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractThis introductory article presents the three main challenges faced in economics to issues raised by dietary models. The first part of this paper examines the dietary models that maximise the health profile of a population under various constraints, including environmental and agronomic criteria. The second part introduces the possibilities of economic modelling to complement these dietary models, despite the limitations of economic approaches. The third part suggests new research proposals by asserting that overlooked questions deserve further scrutiny. We emphasise that economic models are particularly useful to analyse trade-offs between the various objectives underlying a sustainable food system. However, possible improvements should tackle, first, possible substitutions between food categories by consumers; second, adjustments in supply chains; and third, measures of inequality resulting from significant changes towards sustainability. Such improvements may be difficult to realise but are technically possible.; Cet article introductif présente les trois principaux défis auxquels sont confrontés les modèles économiques face aux problèmes soulevés par les modèles alimentaires. La première partie de cet article présente les modèles alimentaires qui maximisent le profil de santé d'une population sous diverses contraintes, incluant des critères environnementaux et agronomiques. La deuxième partie présente les possibilités de modélisation économique permettant de compléter ces modèles alimentaires. La troisième partie suggère de nouvelles propositions de recherche méritant un examen plus approfondi. Nous soulignons que les modèles économiques sont particulièrement utiles pour analyser les compromis entre les différents objectifs définissant un système alimentaire durable. Les améliorations possibles devraient étudier, premièrement, les substitutions possibles entre les catégories d'aliments par les consommateurs, deuxièmement, les ajustements dans les chaînes d'approvisionnement, et troisièmement, les mesures d’inégalités résultant de changements importants pour atteindre la durabilité. Abstract: In this work, we study a new recursive stochastic algorithm for the joint estimation of quantile and superquantile of an unknown distribution. The novelty of this algorithm is to use the Cesaro averaging of the quantile estimation inside the recursive approximation of the superquantile. We provide some sharp non-asymptotic bounds on the quadratic risk of the superquantile estimator for different step size sequences. We also prove new non-asymptotic $L^p$-controls on the Robbins Monro algorithm for quantile estimation and its averaged version. Finally, we derive a central limit theorem of our joint procedure using the diffusion approximation point of view hidden behind our stochastic algorithm.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider a parametric density contamination model. We work with a sample of i.i.d. data with a common density, $f^{\star }=(1-\lambda^{\star })\phi +\lambda^{\star }\phi (\cdot-\mu^{\star })$, where the shape $\phi $ is assumed to be known. We establish the optimal rates of convergence for the estimation of the mixture parameters $(\lambda^{\star },\mu^{\star })\in (0,1)\times \mathbb{R}^{d}$. In particular, we prove that the classical parametric rate $1/\sqrt{n}$ cannot be reached when at least one of these parameters is allowed to tend to $0$ with $n$.

Abstract: Consider finite state space irreducible and absorbing Markov processes. A general spectral criterion is provided for the absorbing time to be close to an exponential random variable, whatever the starting point. When exiting points are added to the state space, our criterion also insures that the exit time and position are almost independent. Since this is valid for any exiting extension of the state space, it corresponds to an instance of the metastability phenomenon. Simple examples at small temperature suggest that this new spectral criterion is quite sharp. But the main interest of the underlying quantitative approach, based on Poisson equations, is that it does not rely on a small parameter such as temperature, nor on reversibility.

Abstract: National audience; Diagnostic tests allow better informed medical decisions when there is uncertainty about a patient’s health status and, therefore, about the desirability to undertake treatment. This paper studies the relation between the expected value of diagnostic information and apatient's risk aversion. We show that the ex ante value of diagnostic information increaseswith risk aversion for diseases with low prevalence, but decreases with risk aversion for diseases with high prevalence. On the other hand, the ex post value of diagnostic information always increases with the patient's degree of risk aversion.

Abstract: The Fourier transform truncated on [-c,c] is usually analyzed when acting on L^2(-1/b,1/b) and its right-singular vectors are the prolate spheroidal wave functions. This paper considers the operator acting on the larger space L^2(exp(b|.|)) on which it remains injective. We give nonasymptotic upper and lower bounds on the singular values with similar qualitative behavior in m (the index), b, and c. The lower bounds are used to obtain rates of convergence for stable analytic continuation of possibly nonbandlimited functions whose Fourier transform belongs to L^2(exp(b|.|)). We also derive bounds on the sup-norm of the singular functions. Finally, we propose a numerical method to compute the SVD and apply it to stable analytic continuation when the function is observed with error on an interval.

Abstract: International audience; Mating system theory based on economics of resource defense has been applied to describe social system diversity across taxa. Such models are generally successful but fail to account for stable mating systems across different environments or shifts in mating system without a change in ecological conditions. We propose an alternative approach to resource defense theory based on frequencydependent competition among genetically determined alternative behavioral strategies characterizing many social systems (polygyny, monogamy, sneak). We modeled payoffs for competition, neighborhood choice, and paternal care to determine evolutionary transitions among mating systems. Our model predicts four stable outcomes driven by the balance between cooperative and agonistic behaviors: promiscuity (two or three strategies), polygyny, and monogamy. Phylogenetic analysis of 288 rodent species supports assumptions of our model and is consistent with patterns of evolutionarily stable states and mating system transitions. Support for model assumptions include that monogamy and polygyny evolve from promiscuity and that paternal care and monogamy are coadapted in rodents. As predicted by our model, monogamy and polygyny occur in sister taxa among rodents more often than by chance. Transitions to monogamy also favor higher speciation rates in subsequent lineages, relative to polygynous sister lineages. Taken together, our results suggest that genetically based neighborhood choice behavior and paternal care can drive transitions in mating system evolution. While our genic mating system theory could complement resource-based theory, it can explain mating system transitions regardless of resource distribution and provides alternative explanations, such as evolutionary inertia, when resource ecology and mating systems do not match.

Abstract: We propose novel approaches to estimating student preferences with data from matching mechanisms, especially the Gale-Shapley deferred acceptance. Even if the mechanism is strategy-proof, assuming that students truthfully rank schools in applications may be restrictive. We show that when students are ranked strictly by some ex ante known priority index (e.g., test scores), stability is a plausible and weaker assumption, implying that every student is matched with her favorite school/college among those she qualifies for ex post. The methods are illustrated in simulations and applied to school choice in Paris. We discuss when each approach is more appropriate in real-life settings. (JEL D11, D12, D82, I23)

Abstract: This paper studies a spatial competition game between two firms that sell a homogeneous good at some pre-determined fixed price. A population of consumers is spread out over the real line, and the two firms simultaneously choose location in this same space. When buying from one of the firms, consumers incur the fixed price plus some transportation costs, which are increasing with their distance to the firm. Under the assumption that each consumer is ready to buy one unit of the good whatever the locations of the firms, firms converge to the median location: there is "minimal differentiation". In this article, we relax this assumption and assume that there is an upper limit to the distance a consumer is ready to cover to buy the good. We show that the game always has at least one Nash equilibrium in pure strategy. Under this more general assumption, the "minimal differentiation principle" no longer holds in general. At equilibrium, firms choose "minimal", "intermediate" or "full" differentiation, depending on this critical distance a consumer is ready to cover and on the shape of the distribution of consumers' locations.

Abstract: The combination of carmustine, etoposide, cytarabine, and melphalan (BEAM) as conditioning regimen prior to autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) remains the standard of care for patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) who are eligible for transplantation. The replacement of carmustine with bendamustine (BeEAM) was described as a promising alternative in non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the BeEAM with the BEAM regimen in MCL patients in the frontline setting. Sixty and 108 patients were included in the BeEAM and the BEAM groups, respectively. At 3 years, progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly higher in the BeEAM than in the BEAM group (84% [73-96] vs. 63% [51-79], p = 0.03). The overall survival was not statistically different between the two groups (p = 0.2). In multivariable analysis, BeEAM regimen remained associated with higher PFS (HR = 0.377, 95% CI, 0.146-0.970; p = 0.043). Subgroup analyses in patients treated with prior rituximab-aracytine induction alone showed that BeEAM improved the PFS compared with BEAM regimen (p = 0.04). Despite the high rate of acute renal failure KDIGO III (32%), treatment-related mortality was not increased with the BeEAM regimen. A prospective randomized trial will be necessary to confirm the beneficial effect of the BeEAM regimen in MCL patients undergoing ASCT.
