International audience; Systematic analysis of the chariot image (Fig. 2; 3), its parts (Fig. 9; 11), and attributes of charioteers (Fig. 10) in the context of rock art styles (Fig. 5; 6; 8) and burial traditions dynamics based on radiocarbon dates of burials and ritual structures made it possible to distinguish two stages of chariots’ usage here: (1) cultural complex of Sagsai-type burials (Fig. 7); (2) cultural complex of khirigsuurs and deer stones. The study of the same images in the context of visual compositions allowed us to reconstruct its role in the life and beliefs of herders. On deer stones, a charioteer’s attributes (belt plates with a pair of hooks) are always adjacent to individual sets of weapons, which indicates the use of chariots by warriors. At the same time, the pragmatics of the images of the chariot and chariot team of both periods is connected with funeral and memorial rites and ideas about the posthumous path to the other world.; Проблема использования колесниц в культуре населения эпохи бронзы Центральной Монголии исследована на материалах археологических памятников из одного микрорайона в долине р. International audience; In 2008, archaeologists of Monaco-Mongolian joint archaeological expedition, which conducted the study within Ikh Tamir Soum, Arkhangai Aimag (Mongolia) have discovered previously unknown Turkic inscription in the Khoyor Khavchig mountain, located on the western side of the valley Bayantsagaan. This Turkic inscription consisting of four rows and a sign “tamga” in the form of a mountain goat, were cut with a sharp instrument on a rock of 34 cm larger - 72 cm higher and a thickness of 30 cm. The line width of graffiti is about 1 mm, the average height of the letters 0,6 - 2 cm, the distance between rows, on average 1,5 - 2 cm. The first line consists of 5 characters, the second - of 8, a third - of 7, and the fourth line - of 6 characters. In addition to these 26 characters, the carved figure of the mountain goat has the particularity of unusually long hind legs. We propose the translation: “Sky senior (Tenger qagan) sat in a nomadic yurt in middle of the earth (etugen)”.; En 2008, l’équipe archéologique conjointe Monaco-Mongolie qui conduisait une recherche sur la commune d’Ikhtamir dans la province de l’Arkhangai (Mongolie) a découvert une inscription turque inédite sur la montagne Khoyor Khavchig, située dans la partie ouest de la vallée de Bayantsagaan. Cette inscription turque composée de quatre lignes et d’un signe « tamga » en forme de bouquetin a été inscrite à l’aide d’un instrument pointu sur un rocher d’une largeur de 34 cm, d’une hauteur de 72 cm et d’une épaisseur de 30 cm. La profondeur du graffiti est approximativement de 1 mm, la hauteur des lettres entre 0,6 et 2 cm, la distance entre les lignes est de 1,5 à 2 cm. La première ligne comporte 5 caractères, la seconde 8, la troisième 7 et la quatrième 6. En plus de ces 26 caractères, la figure gravée d’un bouquetin a la particularité d’avoir des pattes anormalement longues. In an area of 1.5 million km2, some 850 monuments have been recorded at funerary and ritual sites. The typology and the quality of the engravings are similar on all of the stelae and attest the application of rigorous rules. Around the site of Tsatsyn Ereg in central Mongolia, 40 km from the town of Tsetserleg, approximately 500 tombs, more than 100 deer stones and several hundred petroglyphs have been discovered in the course of seven campaigns by the joint Monaco-Mongolian archaeological expedition. This short article deals with rock art preservation issues in Zanskar, Ladakh.

International audience; This paper examines common thematic and esthetic features discernable in the rock art of the western portion of the Tibetan plateau. This rock art is international in scope; it includes Ladakh (La-dwags) (under Indian jurisdiction), Tö (Stod) and the Changthang (Byang-thang) (under Chinese administration) hereinafter called Upper Tibet. This work sets out the relationship of this art to other regions of Inner Asia and defines what we call the 'Western Tibetan Plateau Style'. The primary materials for this paper are petroglyphs (rock carvings) and pictographs (rock paintings). They comprise one of the most prolific archaeological resources on the Western Tibetan Plateau.

Tsatsiin Ereg, Mongolian major site of the beginning of the I st Millenary BC.At the Tsatsiin Ereg site situated in Mongolia's center, 40 km from the town of Tsetserleg more than 26 deer stones and several hundreds petroglyphs have been discovered for three campaigns. Many of these iconographies are in a funerary and ritual context near burials of the ¿ rst nomadic tribes. The Chimane's traditional source of salt is a spring that represents for them the local « centre of the world ». Rising in the Andean foothills at one end of their territory, this spring in the upper Pachene, though no longer exploited, remains the object of a rich tradition which constructs it as « the » high place par excellence in the region. This tradition may be grouped under three headings. First, there is an origin myth which forms almost the last episode of the great creation myth and which expresses the intimate link between the salt-spring and a nearby group of rocks marked with petroglyphs. Next, another myth refers to a more recent period, and explains the loss of an originally effortless process of extraction which has now been definitively replaced by a laborious one. The third part is made up of the set of practices, prescriptions, taboos and representations in which the traditional process of salt extraction, and indeed access to the site itself, is embedded. Although these three aspects are discursively separate from each other, there are echoes between them. The idea of reproduction (rather than literal sexuality, totally banned at the site) is omnipresent and permeates the landscape itself, which is intensely marked and forms the basis of a dense topography., La saline traditionnelle des Chimane est une source salée qui occupe dans leurs représentations une place de « centre du monde » à l'échelle locale. Jaillissant à l'extrême amont de leur territoire, dans les derniers contreforts andins, cette saline du haut Pachene, bien qu'elle ne soit pour ainsi dire plus exploitée, continue à faire l'objet d'une riche tradition qui la pose comme « le » haut lieu par excellence de la région et qui s'organise pour l'essentiel en trois volets. Un mythe d'origine, d'abord, constitue « presque » le dernier épisode du grand mythe de création et pose d'emblée le lien intime existant entre la saline et un site de pétroglyphes voisin. Un autre mythe, ensuite, renvoie à une époque plus récente que celle des origines, et rend compte de la perte de l'extraction facile originelle, remplacée à jamais par une extraction fastidieuse. Le troisième volet, enfin, se compose de l'ensemble des pratiques, prescriptions, interdits et représentations qui entourent l'exploitation traditionnelle et, de façon plus générale, l'accès aux lieux. Distincts les uns des autres sur le plan discursif, ces trois volets se renvoient pourtant bien des échos. Le thème de la reproduction (plutôt que de la sexualité, sévèrement bannie des lieux) y est en particulier omniprésent – y compris dans le paysage qui, aux alentours de la saline, est surinvesti et fait l'objet d'une véritable topo-graphie.
