International audience; The development of the aeronautical industry has brought about certain demands like the reduction of fuel consumption and, consequently, the weight of used structures. Therefore, topology analysis of aircraft components has played an important role in meeting these demands. Another factor widely studied in this context is the type of materials used in the manufacture of such components, hence, by presenting lower densities, composites have gained ground in this industry sector.Besides, an increasingly sought-after characteristic is the sustainability associated with the entire life cycle of any system or part, from its design, through the production phase, to its end of life. The assessment of such sustainability is often carried out by analysing the life cycle’s CO2 footprint, which tends to decrease when the raw materials used are less processed. Materials of natural origin, also known as "bio-materials", have therefore been the target of study, being the basis of the concept of eco-design. The accelerated development of 3D printing technologies has allowed the evolution of structural design methods. Additive manufacturing emerged in the 1980s and has since been expanding in the aerospace field. One of its great advantages is that it can be combined with the use of bio-composites, such as flax or hemp.The topology optimisation of any given structure brings great benefits in terms of the mitigation of the CO2 impact of a given part, as it translates into a reduction of its mass and fuel consumption. However, the combination of this method with the optimisation of the fibre path, in the 3D printing process, and the CO2 footprint of the part’s life cycle simultaneously can bring even more evident benefits. In this paper modifications to existing methods are proposed. In MATLAB, strategies are developed to study the topology and fibre orientation of potentially 3D printed thin structures.

The rise of environmental issues encourages mechanical manufacturing companies to integrate the environment into their product design process. In developing countries, small and medium enterprises are recognized worldwide as the most jobs and processors of economic growth. However, they have gaps to use the eco-design approach to eco innovation. In Benin, small units, processors of agricultural and agrifoodstuffs equipment, face enormous challenges due to lack of acquisition sustainable design concepts. This thesis work aims firstly to propose a simple eco-design method that can be adapted to the realities of Benin and secondly to validate the method using three case studies. All this, in order to provide customers firstly, use values and special attraction and on the other hand, competitive differentiation and economic value. In this momentum, a new quality approach to sustainable design: the IBS method (for Breaking Innovation and Sustainability) is proposed." It’s a combination of approaches " Design for Sustainability: (D4S) " and " Conception of Equipment in the South for Agricultural and Agrifoodstuffs, Method (CESAM) " with environment technical assessment of standard NF E 01-005. The implementation of the IBS method has made it possible to design and manufacture three eco-designed cassava grater (recyclability rate 72.50 %; 2.72 times more efficient and 1.25 times less fuel-consuming than the classic grater), the eco-designed cassava press (recyclability rate 75.40 %; 8.38 times more efficient and 3.28 times more profitable than the classic press) and the peanut sheller (recyclability rate 92.16 %; 1.22 times more efficient than the classic peanut sheller)., La montée en puissance des enjeux environnementaux incite les entreprises de fabrication mécanique à intégrer la dimension environnementale dans la démarche de conception de leurs produits. Dans les pays en développement, les petites et moyennes entreprises sont reconnues mondialement comme étant, les plus créatrices d’emplois et développeuses de croissances économiques. Cependant, elles ont des lacunes à utiliser l’approche d’écoconception pour éco innover. Au Bénin, les petites unités, développeuses d’équipements agricoles et agroalimentaires, sont confrontées à d’énormes difficultés, dues au manque d’acquisition des notions de conception durables. Le présent travail de thèse vise dans un premier temps, à proposer une méthode d’éco conception simple et adaptable aux réalités du Bénin et dans un second temps, à valider la méthode en utilisant trois cas d’études. Tout ceci, dans le but d’apporter aux clients d’une part, des valeurs d’usage et d’attrait particulières et, d’autre part aux équipementiers, de la différenciation concurrentielle et de la valeur économique. Dans cet élan, une nouvelle approche de qualité en conception durable est proposée et intitulée : méthode « Innovation for Breaking and Sustainability (IBS) ». Elle résulte de la combinaison des méthodes de : « Design For Sustainability : D4S », « Conception d’Équipements dans les pays du Sud pour l’Agriculture et l’Agroalimentaire, Méthode (CESAM) » et la méthodologie d’évaluation environnementale de la norme NF-E 01-005. L’implémentation de la méthode IBS a permis de concevoir et de fabriquer trois équipements éco conçus dont les résultats sont les suivants : La râpeuse de manioc éco conçue (taux de récyclabilité 72,50% ; 2,72 fois plus efficace et 1,25 fois moins consommateur de carburant que la râpeuse classique), la presse de manioc éco conçue (taux de récyclabilité 75,40% ; 8,38% plus efficace et 3,28 plus rentable que la presse classique ) et la décortiqueuse d’arachide (taux de récyclabilité 92,16% ; 1,22 fois plus efficace que la décortiqueuse d’arachide classique).

Human food is responsible for significant environmental impacts. The study of these impacts is therefore essential to better understand their origin and to find ways to reduce them in the design of food products. However, other dimensions of quality are major in food design, such as sensory quality and nutritional quality. In this context, the main objective of the thesis was to explore ways to integrate the environmental dimension in the design of food products in the same way as other quality dimensions. The study of environmental impacts by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of different food products of the same category (80 industrial pizzas and 44 artisanal cheeses) revealed a significant variability of these impacts in each of the two categories of products as well as positive correlations to certain nutritional contents within the same food category. Variations in environmental impacts were also found between the same food products (pizzas) produced industrially and at home, related to the variability of consumer practices. All these results, based on mass functional units (FU), present an important limitation since the FU is supposed to be representative of the function of the product studied. The use of different nutritional FUs to rank food products in the same category according to their environmental impacts showed that the ranking of products with a better nutritional value was improved compared to a mass FU. However, although the use of a nutritional FU is a way to take into account the nutritional function of food products during their LCA, its interest is limited. Indeed, its use takes into account only one dimension at a time when qualitative aspects such as sensory quality are not taken into account. However, interviews with professionals in the food industry confirmed that the nutritional and sensory qualities of food were major for them. Thus, a multi-criteria evaluation model based on the DEXi software, which takes into account the nutritional, sensory and environmental qualities of foods, has been developed and makes it possible to discriminate between foods in the same category (pizzas). This approach thus supports the design of foods that are better for the environment while maintaining a good nutritional quality and the sensory pleasure of the consumer., L’alimentation humaine est responsable d’importants impacts environnementaux. L’étude de ces impacts est donc primordiale afin de mieux en comprendre les origines avant d’identifier les solutions permettant de les réduire dès la conception des produits alimentaires. Cependant, d’autres dimensions de la qualité sont majeures dans la conception d’aliments, comme la qualité sensorielle et la qualité nutritionnelle. Dans ce contexte, l’objectif principal de la thèse était d’explorer des moyens permettant d’intégrer la dimension environnementale dans la conception de produits alimentaires au même titre que d’autres dimensions de la qualité. L’étude des impacts environnementaux par Analyse de Cycle de Vie (ACV) de différents produits alimentaires d’une même catégorie (80 pizzas industrielles et 44 fromages artisanaux) a mis en évidence une importante variabilité de ces impacts dans chacune des deux catégories de produits ainsi que des corrélations positives à certaines teneurs nutritionnelles au sein d’une même catégorie d’aliments. Des variations d’impacts environnementaux ont également été mises en évidence entre les mêmes produits alimentaires (pizzas) fabriqués industriellement et à domicile, en lien avec la variabilité des pratiques des consommateurs. Tous ces résultats, basés sur des unités fonctionnelles (UF) massiques, présentent une limite importante puisque l’UF est censée être représentative de la fonction du produit étudié. L’utilisation de différentes UF nutritionnelles pour classer les aliments d’une même catégorie selon leurs impacts environnementaux a montré que le classement des produits ayant un plus grand intérêt nutritionnel était amélioré par rapport à celui obtenu avec une UF massique. Cependant, bien que l’utilisation d’une UF nutritionnelle soit un moyen de prendre en compte la fonction nutritionnelle des aliments lors de leur évaluation par ACV, son intérêt reste limité. En effet, son usage rend compte d’une seule dimension quand d’autres dimensions de la qualité ne sont pas prises en compte. Des entretiens menés auprès de professionnels du secteur de l’agroalimentaire ont cependant confirmé que les qualités nutritionnelle et sensorielle des aliments étaient majeures pour eux. Ainsi, un modèle d’évaluation multicritère, prenant en compte à la fois les qualités nutritionnelle, sensorielle et environnementale des aliments, a été développé sur le logiciel DEXi et permet de discriminer des aliments d’une même catégorie (pizzas). Cette approche constitue ainsi une aide à la conception d’aliments meilleurs pour l’environnement tout en maintenant une bonne qualité nutritionnelle et le plaisir sensoriel du consommateur.

The textile industry is evolving rapidly, and is also constantly changing. It is constantly developing new techniques for the recycling of the textiles and further research is vital for the future needs. The capability to recycle a textile material is a step towards a more green and sustainable industry. However, there are various challenges and difficulties associated with the recycling of textiles. Colorants and other impurities present on the textiles pose a big challenge to the continuity of the chemical recycling. The purpose of our study is to find out methods for the removal of the dyes or colorants from the cotton textiles for the end of life scenarios like recycling. The removal process of the chemical additives in an ecological way would add value to the recycling of textiles, which would help to obtain a recycled textile with the upgraded quality. To examine this subject, a literature study with respect to the chemicals and the removal process along with the recycling methods was done. In general, alkaline reductive treatment is performed using sodium hydroxide and reducing agent like sodium hydrosulphite for the color stripping of the reactive dyed textiles. Bibliographic survey on the various color stripping process, their drawbacks, viability for industrial scale-up etc was also performed. In this study, we have proposed the application of the ozone assisted process for the color stripping of the reactive dyed textiles using the pilot scale setup. The quality of the color stripped fabrics was determined in terms of the color stripping %, mechanical properties and the colorimetric analysis. Response surface methodology tools like the Box-Behnken design was utilized to examine the effects of three parameters like pH of the treatment (3-7), the reaction time (10-50 min) and the ozone concentration (5-85 g/m3 of ozone). With the ozonation process, color stripping of almost 98 % was achieved. The ozonation process is done at room temperature and also can be performed without any harsh chemicals. Additionally, we have also studied the other color stripping methods like the glucose based process. The results demonstrate that the glucose assisted process can emerge as an ecological alternative to the conventional process. Glucose can act as a green alternative reducing agent to the conventional reducing agent like sodium hydrosulphite. The damage to the mechanical properties are less as compared to the conventional and the ozone based process. However, the glucose assisted process utilized high temperatures for efficient color stripping. Finally, the study has highlighted the need of developing novel methods with minimum damage to the quality of the fibers. Amongst all the impact indicators, “Water resource depletion” is the highest for all the ozonation processes since it has the greatest relative value after normalization. It was found that the major contributors to the environmental impacts were Electricity and Oxygen formation. To optimize the impacts, new experimental conditions have been studied. Even, Color stripping of the pigment printed textiles was studied with the ozone assisted process. This study also highlights the need to study presence of contaminants like coatings present on the textiles during their end of life.; L'industrie textile évolue rapidement et est également en constante mutation. Elle développe constamment de nouvelles techniques pour le recyclage des textiles et la poursuite des recherches est vitale pour les besoins futurs. La capacité de recycler un matériau textile est un pas vers une industrie plus verte et durable. Cependant, le recyclage des textiles pose de nombreux défis et difficultés. Les colorants et autres impuretés présents sur les textiles gênent et souvent empêchent le recyclage chimique. L'objectif de notre étude est de trouver des méthodes pour éliminer les teintures ou les colorants des textiles en coton pour les scénarios de fin de vie et de recyclage. Le processus d'élimination des additifs chimiques de manière écologique ajouterait de la valeur au recyclage des textiles, ce qui permettrait d'obtenir un textile recyclé de meilleure qualité. Pour examiner ce sujet, une étude de la littérature concernant les produits chimiques et le processus d'élimination ainsi que les méthodes de recyclage a été réalisée. En général, le traitement réducteur alcalin est effectué à l'aide d'hydroxyde de sodium et d'un agent réducteur comme l'hydrosulfite de sodium pour l'élimination de la couleur des textiles à teinture réactive. Une étude bibliographique sur les différents procédés de décoloration, leurs inconvénients, leur viabilité à l'échelle industrielle, etc. a également été réalisée. Dans cette étude, nous avons proposé l'application du processus assisté par l'ozone pour la décolorantion des textiles teints réactifs en utilisant une installation à l'échelle pilote. La qualité des tissus décolorés a été déterminée en termes de pourcentage de décoloration, de propriétés mécaniques et d'analyse colorimétrique. Des outils de méthodologie de surface de réponse comme la conception de Box-Behnken ont été utilisés pour examiner les effets de trois paramètres qui sont le pH du traitement (3-7), le temps de réaction (10-50 min) et la concentration d'ozone (5-85 g/m3 d'ozone). Le processus d'ozonation a permis d'obtenir une décoloration de près de 98 %. Le processus d'ozonation se fait à température ambiante et peut également être réalisé sans produits chimiques agressifs. De plus, nous avons également étudié d'autres méthodes de décoloration, comme le procédé à base de glucose. Les résultats démontrent que le processus assisté par le glucose peut apparaître comme une alternative écologique au processus conventionnel. Le glucose peut agir comme un agent réducteur écologique alternatif à l'agent réducteur conventionnel comme l'hydrosulfite de sodium. Les dommages aux propriétés mécaniques sont moindres par rapport au procédé conventionnel et au procédé à l'ozone. Cependant, le processus assisté par le glucose utilise des températures élevées pour une décoloration efficace. Enfin, l'étude a souligné la nécessité de développer de nouvelles méthodes avec un minimum de dommages à la qualité des fibres. Parmi tous les indicateurs d'impact, "l'épuisement des ressources en eau" est le plus élevé pour tous les procédés d'ozonation car il a la plus grande valeur relative après normalisation. Il a été constaté que les principaux contributeurs aux impacts environnementaux étaient l'électricité et la formation d'oxygène. Pour optimiser ces impacts, de nouvelles conditions expérimentales ont été étudiées. La décoloration des textiles imprimés avec des pigments a également été étudiée avec le processus assisté par l'ozone. Cette étude souligne également la nécessité d'étudier la présence de contaminants tels que les revêtements présents sur les textiles aprés usage.

International audience; Environmental design of food processes aims at improving their environmental, technological and socio-economic performance while securing the overall quality of the food. Cumulative legislative, economic and ecological pressure along with a growing demand for food in developing and emerging, and functionalized food in Western countries call for revision of the state-of-the-art food processing. The aforementioned constraints merely reduce the degrees of freedom with respect to design and prevent the search for a real compromise between the different and often conflicting technological, economic and environmental objectives of a process. Within this scope, the purpose of this talk is to present previous environmental design attempts of food manufacturing processes on the one hand and emerging, promising approaches on the other. These attempts will be illustrated with examples taken from the dairy sector, and explicitly discussed with respect to the potential rewards and challenges of their respective application. This talk will also highlight the gaps and hence the requirements for further work including better understanding of food processes and particularly the interaction of process parameters on the properties of the food product, optimization of cleaning stages, and development of food process modelling.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems have been criticized to provide little incentive for producers to eco-design. To this end, an incentive scheme, called eco-modulation, based on modulated product fees according to their level of eco-design has recently been introduced. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the introduction of this scheme as part of the collective EPR system in the WEEE sector in France and discusses the impacts of this policy instrument on product design (direct effects) and collective action and innovation (indirect effects). From a theoretical standpoint, we consider policy instruments in our research as part of complex policy mixes and within adaptive policy-making, i.e. on how these mixes evolve over time to adapt to complex and changing issues and collective dynamics. In this perspective, we stress that, while eco-modulation has shown little direct impact, important indirect effects can be identified. We argue that framework conditions, i.e. how the EPR system is organized and conducted in practice, explain better the occurrence of such indirect effects rather than the policy instrument in itself. In this perspective, the paper provides insights on the role of Producer Responsibility Organizations (PRO) in linking individual and collective producer responsibilities and organizing collective action. Moreover, it shows that implementing such a policy instrument requires intense dialog with stakeholders to advance its acceptability, a collective organization to organize its monitoring and deployment, and careful integration with other instruments within a coherent and adaptive policy.

International audience; In this contribution, I develop some reflections on the forms currently taken by the permaculture movement in Italy. The environmental activism supported by permaculture rests on the aspiration to “care for the earth” and “care for people”. Permaculture care-based environmentalism focuses on practices and, specifically, on eco-design practices. There is, however, an important difference in practicing eco-design exclusively as the design of “permanent” ecosystems or instead as the design of places where to “reinhabit”, through repairing social and ecological relations. The study of Italian permaculture activists and initiatives shows that it is still a challenge for eco-design activism to combine “technical courage” and “political courage”. According to design thinker Tomás Maldonado, both of these forms of experimental courage are necessary for an ecological society to emerge out of struggles for socioenvironmental justice and emancipation.

International audience; The purpose of the research is to elaborate and implement a decision-making tool for greener membrane fabrication. The scientific novelty put forth in this study is the generic process modelling – LCA approach applied to the field. The resulting parameterized model allows to obtain material and energy flows as a function of operating conditions for ultrafiltration hollow fibers prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation. Its modular configuration allows for flexibility and adaptation to various membrane materials and industrial practices. Contributions of inputs on environmental impacts can be assessed, as well as the influence of operating conditions. Results for cellulose acetate membranes show major contributions of NMP (i.e. solvent) and glycerol (i.e. pre-conditioning liquid). Improvement strategies for environmental mitigation include acting on glycerol-related operating conditions and are to be considered within the geographic context of membrane fabrication; further technical and economic feasibility studies would embed these strategies in a full eco-design approach. Such a methodology and results should be taken into account for the elaboration of “green membranes” whatever the application and coupled with the impact of membrane use and end-of-life.

Ce travail d’écriture a pour objectif d’apporter un regard neuf et peut-être même critique sur l’éco-design, tel qu’il est pratiqué aujourd’hui, afin d’amener à une nouvelle manière de créer que j’ai nommé ici le design « organique ». Cette étude s’appuiera sur l’analyse de plusieurs exemples concrets, ainsi que sur les discours de nombreux designers, chercheurs et penseurs propres à certains courants alternatifs, ayant travaillé sur le sujet. L’écologie et sa mise en œuvre dans les procédés de création, de conception et de réalisation fera ici figure de proue et la notion de symbiose entre l’humain et son environnement sera un des principaux débat de ce mémoire.

This study aims to understand the effects of confinement on the rheology and molecular dynamics in multilayer polymeric structures fabricated by the forced-assembly multilayer coextrusion of polyethylenes (PE) and confined polymers (PS and PC). The originality of our approach deals with coextrusion of these high mismatched viscoelastic systems. Through this work, PEs with varying macromolecular architectures, with short-chain branching (SCB) and long-chain branching (LCB), were used. Various nano-structured multilayer structures with stable flow and layered architecture were then obtained. Hitherto, various characterization techniques such as WAXS, SEM or TEM, and rheology were used to probe the structure and molecular dynamics of the PE chains. Micro and nanolayered instabilities were observed depending on the viscoelastic mismatched properties and interfacial tensions. The layer multiplication strongly affects the crystallization microstructure/morphology and molecular orientations of PEs. Interestingly, we found that macromolecular and geometrical confinements further influence the final morphology. Subsequently, they remarkably influence the rheology and molecular dynamics of PEs depending on the amount of LCB. From micro- to nanolayers, strain hardening properties in the extensional measurements are strongly dependent on the number of layers, architecture, compositions and confinement. Relevant mechanisms involving molecular rheology theories are proposed to elucidate the reasons underlying the changes. Meanwhile, we were able to model interfacial tension properties especially in the case of nanolayered polymeric systems. Hence, this work clearly demonstrates how the multiscale structural evolution during the micro-/nano-layer coextrusion process can control the final properties of multilayered products. Our findings are aimed at a better understanding of the interfacial properties towards controlling the interface/interphases in the present micro-nanostructured model multilayers polymers including their recyclability for advanced applications ranging from ultra-barrier films from cast extrusion to flexible and high transparency sheets for thermoforming process. Finally, and in the context of circular economy, a future-oriented approach from eco-design to a recycling strategy of the studied multi-micro/nanolayered systems was investigated. Therefore, a novel route is purposed to decrease the number of constituents, control the thickness of the layers, avoid using tie layers, and enhance the recyclability of the studied systems., L’objectif de la présente thèse consiste en l’étude fondamentale pour la compréhension de l’ultra-confinement des polymères sur les propriétés rhéologiques et la dynamique des chaines lors de l’élaboration des multi-micro/nanocouches par le procédé de coextrusion. Pour ce faire, les travaux ont été menés sur des couples modèles à base de polyéthylènes (PE) et de polymères confineurs de type (PS et PC). L'originalité de notre approche concerne la coextrusion de ces polymères ayant un fort contraste des propriétés rhéologiques. Dans ce cadre, différents grades de PEs ayant des architectures macromoléculaires avec des ramifications courtes (SCB) et des ramifications longues (LCB) ont été utilisés. Outre l’étude rhéologique, les systèmes élaborés ont été analysés par diverses techniques de caractérisation telles que le MEB, MET et 2D-WAXS, afin de sonder les propriétés morphologiques, la structure cristalline et la dynamique des chaînes PEs à différentes échelles. Des instabilités ont été observées en fonction du contraste viscoélastique des polymères stratifiés et de la tension interfaciale. Des cartes de stabilités ont été établies. Dans certaines conditions, différentes structures multi-nano-couches nano-architecturées présentant un écoulement stable et ayant une architecture complexe ont été alors obtenues. Lors de la mise en œuvre, la démultiplication des couches influence fortement la microstructure/morphologie et l’orientation cristalline des PE. En outre, nous avons constaté que le confinement moléculaire des PE présente un effet notoire sur la morphologie et la microstructure des multicouches, en fonction de la nature du polymère confineurs. De surcroit, le comportement la rhéologique et de ces PE se révélait être influencé en fonction du type et la longueur de branchements. Quant au comportement rhéologique en élongation, le phénomène de Strain hardening dépend fortement du nombre de couches, de l’architecture et de la composition. Des mécanismes moléculaires ont été proposés pour élucider les manifestations observées. Parallèlement et malgré le fort contraste rhéologique, nous avons pu modéliser à partir des mesures élongationnelles les propriétés de la tension interfaciale, en particulier dans le cas des nanocouches. Par ailleurs, ce travail démontre clairement comment l'évolution structurelle multi-échelle au cours du processus de coextrusion micro-/nano-couche peut contrôler les propriétés finales et notamment le processus de « Strain-hardening ». En outre, les résultats obtenus visent à une meilleure compréhension des propriétés interfaciales pour contrôler l'interface/les interphases dans ces polymères multicouches modèles, tout en intégrant leur recyclabilité. A cet égard, et dans le contexte de l'économie circulaire, une approche prospective allant de l'éco-design à l’élaboration des systèmes multi-micro/nano couches facilement recyclable a été étudiée.

International audience; In the related research article, entitled "A generic process modeling - LCA approach for UF membrane fabrication: Application to cellulose acetate membranes"[1], a generic model is described and used to obtain the list of material and energy flows as a function of operating conditions for ultrafiltration (UF) hollow fibers preparation by non-solvent induced phase separation. In this data article, equations of the model, a dataset of model parameters and modelled data are detailed. modeling equations are developed from material and energy balances for each unit operation (i.e. from polymer solution mixing to module conditioning) based on an industrial membrane fabrication process of UF cellulose acetate modules. These equations may be reused as such or adapted to other membrane materials and industrial practices. The dataset of model parameters relates to industrial on-site measurements and scientific literature for the existing cellulose-based module. The modelled data corresponds to a reference situation for which hollow fibers (inner and outer diameters equal to 0.93 mm and 1.67 mm, respectively) are fabricated from a polymer solution composition of 20 wt.% of cellulose triacetate, 78 wt.% N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and 2 wt.% lithium chloride.

The cleaning phase is seldom included in the eco-design of food processes, since few cleaning kinetics models exist. The goal of this study was to investigate benefits of including a cleaning kinetics model, which considers three major operating parameters of cleaning (concentration, temperature and flow rate), in the eco-design of a food process. To this end, we developed an eco-design approach for a dairy evaporator process that includes both production and cleaning phases. A cleaning kinetics model was selected to predict cleaning duration as a function of the operating parameters of cleaning. Cleaning duration also depends on the fouling surface density, which depends on the duration of the production phase. Fouling surface density was predicted using three hypothetical fouling kinetics laws. After optimization, environmental and economic improvements were observed in process performance. The evaporation process is optimized at a high cleaning temperature (95 °C), a flow-rate similar to that used during the production phase and a low caustic soda concentration (

The present thesis covers the eco-design of a dry cleaning machine by integration of a membrane process for solvent dehydration. This solvent belongs to the family of “green” solutions and has been developed to replace the hazardous perchloroethylene. After washing cycles, the solvent contains fibers, colorants and water. The presence of water represents an issue because relatively high water concentrations (about 10%wt) in solvent can shrink the textiles. Hence, the solvent should imperatively be dehydrated. The current dry cleaning machines are equipped with a simple one-stage distillation. Due to this limitation, the water can not be efficiently separated from the solvent. As an alternative solution, an implementation of the membrane process was proposed.The experimental investigation was carried out for the membrane process. It has proven the feasibility of the solvent dehydration and has demonstrated an extremely high separation and energy efficiency. In order to characterize water-solvent mixture, an in-depth thermodynamic study was performed. The experimental and theoretical results allowed to obtain valuable phase equilibria data that have not previously been documented. These data have served to correctly characterize the membrane transport and to estimate all the required parameters for further dehydration stage design., La présente thèse porte sur l’éco-conception d’une machine de nettoyage à sec par intégration d’un procédé membranaire pour la déshydratation du solvant. Ce solvant, appartenant à la famille des « solvants verts », a été développé afin de remplacer le toxique perchloroéthylène. Après les cycles de lavage, le solvant contient des différentes fibres, colorants ainsi que de l’eau. Lorsque la teneur en eau est relativement grande (aux alentours de 10%wt), le solvant provoque le rétrécissement des textiles et il est primordial de le déshydrater. Les machines actuelles de nettoyage à sec sont équipées par un distillateur batch. Dû à ses limitations, il n’est pas possible de séparer l’eau et le solvant de manière efficace. Dans ce contexte, un procédé membranaire a été proposé en tant qu’une solution alternative.Pour ce procédé membranaire, une étude expérimentale a été réalisée. Lors de cette étude, la faisabilité de la déshydratation du solvant a été prouvée. De plus, une très haute efficacité énergétique et de séparation a été observée. Afin de caractériser le mélange eau-solvant, une étude thermodynamique a été également menée. Les résultats expérimentaux et théoriques ont permis d’obtenir les données importantes des équilibres de phases qui n’ont pas été publiées auparavant. Ces données ont servi pour caractériser le transport membranaire ainsi qu’estimer tous les paramètres indispensables pour la conception de l’étape de déshydratation.

International audience; Taking into consideration all the life cycle of a product is now an important step in the design of a product or a technology. Despite the improvement in refrigerant regulation, the environmental impacts of refrigeration systems remain important and need to be improved. In this paper, the environmental impacts of refrigeration systems in a typical hypermarket are compared using the LCA methodology under different conditions. The system is used to provide cold at two levels of temperature: medium and low temperature during a life period of 15 years. The most commonly used architectures of hypermarket cold production systems are investigated: centralized direct expansion systems and indirect systems using a secondary loop to transport the cold. The variation of power needed during seasonal changes and during the daily opening/closure periods of the hypermarket are considered. R134a as the primary refrigerant fluid and two types of secondary fluids are considered (liquid CO2 and ammonia). The composition of each system and the leakage rate of the refrigerant through its life cycle are taken from the literature and industrial data. Twelve scenarios are examined. They are based on the variation of three parameters, 1. location: France (Paris), Spain (Toledo) and Sweden (Stockholm), 2. different sources of electric consumption: photovoltaic panels and low voltage electric network and 3. architecture: direct and indirect refrigeration systems. SimaPro software was used to assess the environmental performances and different impact assessment methods were used; CML method is used to evaluate the midpoint environmental indicators and IMPACT 2002+ to assess endpoint indicators. This study highlights the most environmentally damaging parameter to be electric consumption compared to the impacts of refrigerant leakage supporting the conclusions of previous studies. The use of a secondary loop lowers the refrigerant amount in the primary loop and thus the climate change indicator is reduced. The cost estimation of CAPEX and OPEX shows that depending on the location the use of photovoltaic panels can be more expensive and does not bring any improvement in environmental impacts.

At the beginning of the 20th century, buildings eco-design concept appeared in reponse of the global warming and the biodiversity loss due to human activity. The aim of eco-design is to create and restore building without impact on the earth. This concept can be applied on all constructions, that’s why we tried to apply this to the specificity of the wine cellar. In the construction environment, many points can be improved such as water and electricity consumption, used materials and buildings thermal efficiency.First, we decided to reflect about the winery effluent management. We find new technics to manage winery effluents. These new technics used phytopurification with bamboo or reeds. These technics use less electricity, smell better, and work all over the year. Bamboo plantations allow effluent management without export of water/sludge and planted bed of reeds on zeolithe permit to obtain a clean water who can be reused for irrigation in the future.Then, we used a software to model the impact of the construction technics on the evolution of temperatures in the cellar during the year (dynamic thermal simulation). That allow us to make important construction choices.Last but not least, we worked on the installation of solar panels next to a wine cellar. The aim of this installation is to produce half of the total electricity consumption of the building. We simulated the future electricity consumption of the cellar, the production of solar panels in the area of Narbonne and the size of the central needed. We observed that this cellar will need around 360 MWh by year and the optimal central for this site would be a central of 180 kWc.; L’éco-conception de bâtiment est un concept apparu au début des années 2000 en réponse aux enjeux actuels liés au réchauffement climatique et à la perte de biodiversité due aux pratiques humaines. L’éco-conception vise à créer ou réhabiliter des bâtiments de la manière la plus écologique possible, elle peut être appliquée à l’ensemble des constructions, c’est pourquoi nous avons entrepris de l’appliquer à la spécificité des bâtiments vinicoles. Au sein d’une construction, de nombreux points peuvent être améliorés telles que la consommation en eau et en électricité du bâtiment, les matériaux utilisés et l’efficacité thermique des bâtiments.Dans un premier temps, nous avons décidé de traiter comme sujet la gestion des effluents de caves en présentant des nouvelles techniques de traitement des effluents. Ces nouvelles techniques utilisent la phytoépuration à l’aide de bambous ou de roseaux, cela permet un traitement des déchets peu énergivore, émettant peu d’odeur et fonctionnant tout au long de l’année. La bambouseraie permet une gestion des effluents vinicoles sans export de matière et les roseaux plantés sur lits de zeolithe permettraient d’obtenir une eau traitée possiblement réutilisable pour l’irrigation.Ensuite, nous avons utilisé un logiciel permettant de modéliser l’évolution des températures dans le bâtiment au cours de l’année en fonction des techniques de construction (simulation thermique dynamique), ce qui nous a permis de réaliser des choix constructifs pour le futur bâtiment.Enfin, nous nous sommes penchés sur la mise en place de panneaux photovoltaïques en autoconsommation qui alimenteraient en électricité un bâtiment de négoce en vin. Une modélisation de la future consommation en électricité du bâtiment a été faite ainsi qu’un pré-dimensionnement de la future centrale électrique pour répondre à une partie des besoins du bâtiments. On a observé que ce domaine consommerait aux alentours de 360 MWh par an et qu’une installation de 180 kWc de panneau serait optimale pour la consommation électrique de ce bâtiment.

International audience; The Fab Lab network is newly engaged in several projects that involve the idea of rethinking sustainability, re-localizing manufacturing and promoting a collaborative learning culture. Fab Labs, as makespaces, are now perceived as key spaces for actively developing practical knowledge and create interactions with local stakeholders toward a more sustainable and redistributed manufacturing. In this respect, makespaces are encouraged to redefine its relationship with the local ecosystem by exploring questions such as: What are the effective interactions with local communities? How to build local interventions for enabling more emerging futures? The paper aims at exploring what could be the role of co-creation in local context actions and what could be the community services developed in collaboration with makespaces for supporting the transition towards more circular cities. The results are based on an ongoing action-research at Fab Lab Barcelona called "El Barri Circular", which is designed in the frame of the EU-SISCODE project 1 as a 18 th month co-creation process about circular practices in the neighbourhood of Poblenou. This pilot has been engaging local stakeholders to create synergies in the specific context of food. The pilot used a set of design and co-creation methodologies to support a transition towards re-valuing surplus food and bio-waste at the neighbourhood scale. Over the project, El Barri Circular has collaborated with local km0 restaurants, cooperatives, local associations, urban gardens, and makers' community and engaged more specifically with three circular community projects connected to the food value chain: food waste redistribution, bio-waste-based material development and collective composting. Four interdependent types of community services for circular systems were imagined, and will now be co-produced and tested at the neighbourhood level: a set of learning and co-designed activities to support the local design and production of dedicated tools, a logistical service for food waste collection-processing and community engagement and an environmental monitoring system that measures the flow of materials, energy and resources in the local food system. The project outputs will be discussed within broader networks and feed a collective handbook that will contribute to envision the design of new circular practices in makespaces and thus, shape new forms of learning in local areas.

Part 4: TRIZ Applications in Eco Design; International audience; Growing demands for cleaner production and higher eco-efficiency in process engineering require a comprehensive analysis of technical and environmental outcomes of customers and society. Moreover, unexpected additional technical or ecological drawbacks may appear as negative side effects of new environmentally friendly technologies. The paper conceptualizes a comprehensive approach for analysis and ranking of engineering and ecological requirements in process engineering in order to anticipate secondary problems in eco-design and to avoid compromising the environmental or technological goals. For this purpose, the paper presents a method based on integration of the Quality Function Deployment approach with the Importance-Satisfaction Analysis for the requirements ranking. The proposed method identifies and classifies comprehensively the potential engineering and eco-engineering contradictions through analysis of correlations within requirements groups such as stakeholder requirements (SRs) and technical requirements (TRs), and additionally through cross-relationship between SRs and TRs.

The link between road infrastructure and use energy has not been,studied in depth , particularly as the legitimate societal expectations for transportation are primarily related to efficiency and safety. The environmental emergency implies to explore new trends as minor optimization of the road to reduce the energy use. This thesis aims to develop one of these optimization by improving the poten-tial of eco-driving road infrastructure. This will be achieved by modeling the effect on the energy spent by vehicles on a road of the adequacy between their dynamics, geometry and the sectioning in speed of the infrastructure. A four steps methodol-ogy has been developed to assess speed sectioning. The first step is to proposea criterion usable by road managers to rapidly detect Misplaced Speed-sectioning Position (MSP). The second step quantifies the energy cost of a MSP for a particular vehicle and the optimal position of the speed sectioning for an eco-driver. The outputs of these two steps yield information to the manager who can propose a new speed sectioning layout taking into account traffic and road configuration. The third step of the methodology involves a traffic flow simulation enabling an enhanced energy evaluation of new speed sectioning, based on real traf-fic data, and modeling several driver behaviors. The fourth step is an optimization process to find the optimized speed sectioning. Experiments have been carried out in Bosnia-Herzegovina and France to demonstrate the feasibility of the methodology. This report provides additional material to the authors' publication "Research perspectives in eco-design" (submitted to Design Science, April 2019). It gives a detailed description of the ten case studies used in the paper to support the authors' analysis and recommendations.

Faced with current environmental challenges, investing in renewable energies in the name of the "energy transition" is the alternative most adopted by many countries. Renewable energies, in particular photovoltaic solar (PV) energy, have thus become innovative and competitive sectors in full expansion. In this context, it is therefore necessary to ensure that new PV technologies, which are complex and the result of several manufacturing stages, meet the criteria of a product with low environmental impact, referred here as eco-designed.The state of the art on eco-design shows that the consideration of environmental constraints in R&D projects with low TRL "Technology Readiness Level" is still an emerging phenomenon, for two main reasons. On the one hand, environmental impact assessment is relatively complex for a non-mature technology under development (TRL low) because its characteristics and manufacturing processes are not yet fully defined. On the other hand, the identified tools in the literature have several limitations that impede their appropriation in R&D organizations.This research work therefore aims to develop a methodology to enable the sustainable integration of eco-design into R&D organizations, supporting their industrial partners in innovation and competitiveness. Thus, the developed method is based on the estimation of the evolution rate of technical, economic and environmental criteria of a new technology (low TRL) through a specific database of reference. The construction of the database relies on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), used as a management tool to provide reliable results, despite the low TRL level.To integrate this approach into R&D organizations in a sustainable way, the method developed was implemented in a software "ECO PV" dedicated to crystalline silicon PV systems, which represent more than 94% of the current PV market today. Based on the principle of democratization of environmental knowledge and capitalization of information, this tool is accessible not only to LCA experts but also to all engineers in the PV field.Finally, this research work enabled to generate reliable, simple and quantified results and to develop an eco-design methodology to guide the technological choices of projects in the upstream phases of R&D, in order to develop PV systems more environmentally friendly., Face aux enjeux environnementaux actuels, s’investir dans les énergies renouvelables au nom de la « transition énergétique » est l’alternative la plus adoptée par de nombreux pays. Les énergies renouvelables, en particulier l’énergie photovoltaïque, sont ainsi devenues des secteurs concurrentiels innovants en pleine expansion. Dans ce contexte, il est donc nécessaire de s'assurer que les nouvelles technologies PV, qui sont complexes et issues de plusieurs étapes de fabrication, répondent aux critères d'un produit peu impactant pour l’environnement, dénommé ici éco-conçu. L’état de l’art sur l’éco-conception montre que la prise en compte des contraintes environnementales dans les projets de R&D à échelle TRL « Technology Readiness Level » bas est encore un phénomène émergent, pour les raisons suivantes : d’une part l’évaluation de l’impact environnemental est relativement complexe pour une technologie non mature en cours de développement (TRL bas) ; ses caractéristiques et procédés de fabrication n’étant pas encore tous connus ; d’autre part les outils identifiés présentent plusieurs écueils qui limitent leur intégration dans les organismes PV de R&D.Ce travail de recherche vise donc à développer une méthodologie pour permettre l’intégration pérenne de l’éco-conception dans les organismes de R&D, pour accompagner leurs partenaires industriels dans leur effort d’innovation et de compétitivité.La méthode développée est ainsi basée sur le principe d’estimation des taux d’évolutions techniques, économiques et environnementales d’une nouvelle technologie (TRL bas) par l’intermédiaire d’une base de données de référence. La construction de cette dernière s’appuie sur l’Analyse du Cycle de Vie (ACV) comme outil de pilotage pour fournir des résultats fiables, malgré le faible niveau TRL.Pour intégrer de façon pérenne cette approche au sein des organismes de R&D, la méthode développée a été implémentée dans un outil informatique « ECO PV » dédié aux systèmes PV en silicium cristallin, qui constituent plus de 90% du marché PV actuel. Basé sur le principe de démocratisation des connaissances environnementales et de la capitalisation des informations, cet outil est accessible non seulement aux experts en ACV mais aussi à l’ensemble des ingénieurs du domaine PV.Ce travail de recherche a enfin permis d’une part de générer des premiers résultats à la fois fiables, simples et quantifiés, et de développer une méthodologie d’éco-conception pour orienter les choix technologiques des projets dans les phases amont de R&D, afin de développer des systèmes PV plus respectueux de l’environnement.

This manuscript presents a study of cycloisomerization reactions, in accordance with the principles of green chemistry, based on the electrophilic activation of alkynes in the presence of achiral and chiral Brønsted acids via the formation of vinyl cation intermediates and the attack of the latter by carbon nucleophiles. The use of a catalytic amount of Brønsted acid with 2-alkynylbiaryl substrates delivered phenanthrene derivatives in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. High catalytic activities, along with differences of chemo- and regioselectivity were observed when comparing to carbophilic metallic Lewis acid catalysts.The use of a directing group substituting the alkyne function, the 2-naphtholyle moiety, resulted in increased basicity of the alkyne, increased regioselectivity of the protonation step and the creation of hydrogen bonding with the catalyst, paving the way for the development of an asymmetric version of cycloisomerization reactions. In the presence of chiral Brønsted acids, such as N-triflylphosphoramides, the enantioselective synthesis of atropisomeric phenanthrenes was achieved with excellent yields and good enantiomeric excesses. An intermolecular reaction of hydroarylation of alkynes in the presence of the same catalysts delivered atropisomeric alkenes in excellent yields and enantioselectivities.The use of a directing group on the alkyne also allowed for the first time the development of Brønsted acid-catalyzed enyne cycloisomerization reactions involving the initial, selective protonation of the alkyne function. A variety of polycyclic scaffolds were obtained by this methodology with high yields and moderate enantioselectivities.The cycloisomerization catalytic reaction is known to chemists as a model reaction respecting several principles of green chemistry such as atomic economy, waste limitation and the principle of catalysis.However, no quantitative evidence is provided by chemists to promote the sustainability of the methodologies developed in their laboratories. Several monocriteria parameters and multi-criteria methods have been developed to try to address this environmental quantification issue. However, the interest in developing new catalytic systems should be associated with the development of more environmentally efficient processes in addition to knowing if it is more chemically efficient.Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the standardized reference method for quantifying the environmental impacts (e. g. climate change, toxicity, resource use) of a product over its life cycle. LCA has already been applied to green chemistry developments to compare the durability of chemical reactions, or for eco-design applications. However, it is not trivial to use LCA at the laboratory scale because it requires (i) data that are difficult for the chemist to access (ii) additional modeling steps to estimate potential impacts at the industrial scale (iii) requires the expertise of a LCA practitioner. [...], Ce manuscrit présente une étude de réactions de cycloisomérisation, respectant les principes de la chimie verte, reposant sur l’activation électrophile d’alcynes en présence d’acides de Brønsted achiraux et chiraux via la formation intermédiaire d’un cation vinylique et l’attaque de ces derniers par des nucléophiles carbonés. L’emploi d’une quantité catalytique d’acide de Brønsted avec des substrats de types 2-éthynylbiaryles a permis d’accéder à des dérivés de type phénanthrène avec des rendements bons à excellents dans des conditions douces. Une très grande activité ainsi que des différences de chimio- et de régiosélectivité ont été observées par rapport aux catalyseurs de la famille des acides de Lewis carbophiles.L’emploi d’un groupement directeur substituant la fonction alcyne, le groupement 2-naphtolyle, a permis d’augmenter la basicité de l’alcyne, de fixer le site de protonation et de créer des liaisons hydrogène avec le catalyseur, ce qui ouvre la voie au développement d’une version asymétrique de ces réactions de cycloisomérisation. En présence d’acides de Brønsted chiraux, notamment les N-triflylphosphoramides, la synthèse énantiosélective de phénanthrènes atropoisoméres a été réalisée avec d’excellents rendements et de bons excès énantiomériques. Une version intermoléculaire d’hydroarylation d’alcynes en présence des mêmes catalyseurs a conduit à la synthèse d’alcènes atropoisomériques avec d’excellents rendements et énantiosélectivités.L’utilisation d’un groupement directeur sur l’alcyne a aussi permis, pour la première fois, le développement de réactions de cycloisomérisations d’énynes catalysées par les acides de Brønsted impliquant la protonation initiale sélective de la fonction alcyne. Plusieurs familles de dérivés polycycliques ont ainsi été obtenues avec de bons rendements et des énantiosélectivités modérées.Les réactions de cycloisomérisation en présence de catalyseurs sont connues des chimistes pour être citées comme des réactions modèles respectant plusieurs principes de la chimie verte tel que l’économie d’atome, la limitation des déchets et le principe de catalyse. Cependant, aucune preuve quantitative n’est avancée par les chimistes pour comparer la durabilité des voies de synthèse développées au sein de leurs laboratoires respectifs. Plusieurs paramètres monocritères ainsi que des méthodes dites multicritères ont été développés pour répondre à cette problématique de quantification environnementale.L’analyse du cycle de vie (ACV) est la méthode standardisée de référence permettant de quantifier des impacts environnementaux (ex. changement climatique, toxicité, utilisation de ressources) d’un produit sur son cycle de vie. L’ACV a déjà été appliquée aux développements de la chimie verte pour comparer la durabilité de réactions chimiques, ou à des fins d’éco-conception. International audience; To face up abiotic resource depletion and other environmental issues as climate change due to usual fossil-based chemical production technologies, some alternative strategies have been developed using renewable resources. To produce such bio-based chemicals, renewable raw materials such as cereal crops or vegetables are currently used. To promote an environmental responsible practice, organic waste could be a relevant alternative to these dedicated crops. BIORARE technology is an innovative concept based on coupling an anaerobic digestion plant processing with bioelectrosynthesis in order to produce a range of chemicals from organic waste. Even if bioelectrosynthesis processes are not yet technologically mature; it is appropriate to consider the credibility of this emerging technology in environmental terms thanks to an eco-design approach. This eco-design approach is based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. A LCA of biosuccinic acid production thanks to BIORARE technology has been carried out and has been combined with sensitivity analysis. The aim of this strategy is to ensure that sensitive parameters are identified and adjusted in order to make the technology the more eco-friendly possible whilst maintaining good economy efficiency. The present study describes the identification and optimisation of key parameters of the BIORARE technology applied for succinic acid production. These key parameters and their range of variation are chosen according to a realistic strategy allowing the control of the BIORARE technology on an industrial scale. The results show that the current density applied during the bioelectrosynthesis and the hydrolysis yield during the pre-treatment of the waste stream are key variables in the optimisation between production efficiency and the environmental footprint. The environmental efficiency of the process was studied by applying the eco-efficiency ratio. When the production of biosuccinic acid using the BIORARE technology was compared to a reference scenario, better overall eco-efficiency was shown despite some environmental penalties. In parallel, when the same study was performed for bioethanol production a low efficiency was revealed without environmental penalties. © 2019

Designing robots with bio-sourced materials (BSM) for eco-design purpose has almost never been explored in the past. This thesis investigates the potential of using bio-sourced materials, which have almost no environmental impact, instead of metals for robot design. Wood is one of the best candidates because of its interesting mechanical properties. However, wood performance / dimensions vary with the atmospheric conditions / external solicitations. Thus, this thesis is in the framework of the RobEcolo project whose challenging to design a stiff and accurate wooden industrial parallel robot. To ensure optimal performance of the wooden robot (specifically the accuracy) and in order to minimize the uncertainty of the BSM models and the errors due to the dimensional variations due to atmospheric conditions, exteroceptive sensors can be used to control the robot. In order to satisfy these requirements, we propose in this manuscript a modification of the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory which is used to develop accurate and fast wood elastic models able to predict the realistic robot static and dynamic behaviors. International audience; This study takes place in a context where the feed manufacturers have access to eco labeling databases which allow them to do eco design and produce feeds with less environmental impacts. First results of eco feed show substitutions between feedstuffs compared to standard feed. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the rebound effects of the production of eco feed for pigs if the practice becomes widespread in France. A mind map was built with 5 experts to identify in a qualitative way the panel of different consequences. We then focused on the one concerning the change of crop rotations to produce eco feed. We chose a virtual territory dedicated to produce the feedstuffs for a pig farm and assessed the environmental impacts by LCA using different functional units and perimeters. The situation with the production of eco feeds can appeared better or worse compared to the production of standard feeds. This work underlines the complexity of eco design and the limit to do it with data from attributional LCA. It is necessary to complete the databases by information to make the users aware of the rebounds effects invisible during the eco design process.

Purpose: In a context of flourishing eco-labelling programs and environment policy for food products, LCA application to agricultural systems faces the challenges of being operational, accurate and exhaustive. This is particularly challenging for the newly developing LCA and ISO-compliant water footprinting, with many LCIA methods only recently developed, but no dedicated inventory method. To support the inventory of elementary water flows, LCA practitioners have a variety of tools available, ranging from databases (e.g. World Food LCA Database) to complex agro-hydrological models. To allow all LCA practitioners to fulfil their diverse agri-food LCA objectives, a review of available inventory tools for field water flows and recommendations are needed. Methods: The selection of the appropriate method and tool for the inventory of field water flows in agri-food LCA studies depends on the objectives of the LCA study, data and resources available (time and skills). We analysed water inventory and agri-food LCA databases by evaluating the models on which they rely and their input data. Then, we explored the use of agro-hydrological models for LCA aiming at discriminating between different cropping system practices (LCA-based eco-design). Results and discussion: Water inventory and agri-food LCA databases provide estimates of theoretical water consumed by a crop and rely on data and methods that have limitations, making them suitable only for background agricultural LCAs. In addition, databases do not support the application of water availability footprint indicators (assessing quantitative water use and water quality alteration). For the LCA-based eco-design of cropping systems, the inventory of water flows should be based on a model simulating evapotranspiration, deep percolation and runoff accounting for crop specificities, pedo-climatic conditions and agricultural management. In particular, the model should account for possible water, salinity and nutrient stresses; assess evaporation and transpiration separately; and estimate runoff and drainage according to the system specificities. Yield should not be estimated with a model but with primary data. Recommended and default data sources are provided for each input parameter. Conclusions: The FAO AquaCrop model represents a good trade-off between accuracy, simplicity and robustness for LCA-based eco-design of cropping systems. However, this model is not yet applicable for perennial crops. Beyond a single model selection, this is a modelling approach that we characterised in this work.

A wide range of product lifecycle management (PLM) maturity models are proposed to assess the relative position of companies on their road to complete PLM implementation. However, it is a tough job for the company to dynamically evaluate the gradual process of PLM maturity by using existing values and accurately make decisions of improving PLM maturity by selecting the optimum alternative. A fuzzy PLM components maturity model (PCMA) is presented to build the internal logical relationship between maturity levels and existing values that can automatically predict the unknown PLM maturity levels. A fuzzy AHP-VIKOR methodology is used to make a decision among option PLM strategies. The weights of the criteria are determined by fuzzy pairwise comparison matrices (PCM). The weights of alternatives with respect to criteria are calculated by fuzzy VIKOR. The fuzzy AHP-VIKOR is a compromise solution and has the ability of transfer subjective and implicit linguistics into objective and transparent data. International audience; This article presents an overview of five use-cases that illustrate food-system modeling approaches, most of them combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The cases deal with issues as diverse as: the modeling of winemaking fermentation; the choice of a food packaging material; the design of solid foam cereal products; argumentation modeling to support multistakeholder decision-making, and the control of freeze-drying for eco-design purposes. They tackle several challenges to modeling and knowledge engineering in food systems: capitalizing data and knowledge; structuring a shared vocabulary and domain knowledge in an ontology; formalizing viewpoints and contradictions from food-related debates; supporting multi-criteria decision-making.

The methodology for this research was based on on-location visits, in-depth interviews, and consensus building among R&D, sustainability, and quality managers. A multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach was adopted through interpretive structural modelling (ISM), a method that assists decision makers to transform complex models with unclear data into structural models. Some of the most influential barriers to biodiversity-based eco-design initiatives are “lack of legal incentive”, “not enough demand from the market”, and “not enough available knowledge/scientific data.” The most relevant barrier was “no legal incentive” from government. Consequently, managers should concentrate their efforts in tackling those barriers that may affect other barriers known as ‘key barriers’. Government should work decisively toward promoting a framework of legal incentives for bio-based eco-design; otherwise, metaphorically, “there is not carnival without the samba singer who pushes the rhythm”. The results given here reveal the barriers for bio-based eco-design in a Brazilian leading company, and this is the first work combining ISM to barriers to biodiversity R&D and eco-design. Home furnishings are subject to an acceleration of their renewal cycle. This phenomenon has ecological and sanitary consequences. This research analyzes the consumption practices of these products by women, the gender that is most interested in interior design and decoration. It studies the factors that drive the desire for change, such as the feeling of weariness, the habits and frequencies of renewal, and women's concerns towards ecological issues. The implementation of research and treatment methods, ail coming from social sciences, highlights a category of consumers who resist to the consumption of industrialized products and choose consumption practices that are mainly based on DIY and recycling. These "cultural creatives" individuals are at the origin of the emergence of an ethical culture that is growing and that will undoubtedly modify the values that will shape the society of the future. Part 8: Modular Design and Products; International audience; The aim of this paper is to propose a new model for the selection of sustainable design options. This model is based on the environmental, the economic, and the social life cycle assessments. It deals with the uncertainties and the imprecisions due to the technological choices and their potential impacts since early design phase of the product. The proposed model is based on four principles, namely: Early integration, life cycle thinking, functionality thinking, and the multi-criteria concept. A case study is presented to validate the applicability of the proposed model on the design of batteries.

International audience; Additive manufacturing is an innovative manufacturing process that enables rapid manufacturing of functional products and parts. On the other side, considering environmental aspects in design is beneficial as it leads to lower costs, improved product quality, new business opportunities. Thus, in order to foster the potential of AM in product innovation and product manufacturing in the light of environmental concerns, a new design method is necessary. This paper proposes a method in the context of Design with Additive Manufacturing, to take into account the specificities of this manufacturing process in a Design to Environment approach. The method is focused on the Early Design Stages (EDS) of the product development process, which are crucial not only for choices regarding the product characteristics but also for the environmental parameters that need to be taken into consideration. The implementation of the proposed method in creativity session of the EDS underlined the need for dedicated supports in terms of environmental decisions. More and specifically the need for providing tools to capitalize the decisions made focusing on each Life Cycle Stage of the product was identified as a requirement for this support.

International audience; A large part of impacts that will be generated by a system / product during its life cycle are allocated during the earliest stages of the design process. In this paper we propose to trace the evolution of environmental impacts throughout a complex system design process through an industrial case. We follow the stages of a boat design process for maintenance of offshore wind farms. The different architectures sketched throughout the design process are evaluated in order to measure the impact of design decisions on the environmental performance of the system. The problematic of taking into account environmental constraints upstream of the design process abound methods but they often prove inadequate for complex systems whose subsystems interact in complex ways leading to conflicts in the decision of the right parameters. To meet the stakeholders’ needs, that appear (during the design project) in the iterative design process, the initial design is modified to fit the specifications. This iterative path between designers and users leads to uncertainties over the environmental impact of the system. It is then necessary to use smart design support tools allowing a negotiation in definition phase of system specifications. Thus the preliminary design is modified to incorporate changes and contributions occurred during the negotiation phase functional.

International audience; Nowadays, eco-designing products is increasingly practiced. The next challenge for sustain- ability is to optimize production processes. Biorefi neries are particularly concerned with this improve- ment, because they use renewable resources. To identify the contribution of transformation processes to the overall environmental impacts, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) appears as the adequate method. A literature review highlights that LCA is mainly performed on biorefi neries to compare biomass feed- stocks between them and to a fossil reference. Another part of environmental LCA compares the impacts of different processing routes. Nevertheless, these evaluations concern already designed pro- cesses. Generally, processes are considered as a unique operation in assessments. However, some criteria like operating can notably modify environmental burdens. The eco-design of biorefi nery pro- cesses can be guided by coupling process simulation to LCA. This method has been emerging in the chemical sector in recent years. Consequently, this paper proposes a new methodological approach to assessing the complete sustainability of biorefi nery processes, since its fi rst design stages. In addi- tion to coupling process simulation and environmental LCA, the other pillars of sustainability will be assessed. Indeed, Life Cycle Costing and Social Life Cycle Assessment can be performed to obtain an integrated methodological framework. The simultaneous optimization of the environmental, economic, and social performances of the process can lead to antagonist ways of improving. Consequently, compromises should be realized. Thereby, the multi-objective optimization can be accomplished by a metaheuristic method supported by a decision-making tool. Finally, the main limits of this method and some perspectives and ways for improving are discussed.

International audience; In this paper, we propose a Knowledge to use experience feedback techniques in order to keep track of eco-design decisions. The integration of eco-design in industries is becoming more and more considered as a necessary condition of Sustainable development. Even sustainable rules become to be defined as norms, but the application of these rules in design still difficult. Firstly, eco-design criteria are extracted from documents in order to help the definition of experience feedback sheets main points. CommonKADS generic models are also used in order to define adequate sheets to reasoning and task types linked to eco-design phases.

Taking into account various environmental requirements and a large number of environmental initiatives, our research work strives to provide a systemic management tool to facilitate the integration of environmental considerations into companies. The assumption is that a systemic definition of the “interactions” between different possible environmental actions could help generate a more efficient trajectory for meeting corporate environmental objectives. Based on an in-depth analysis of the environmental actions included in more than 300 existing environmental methods and tools, we propose a network of environmental activities. This network is based on four items: 46 environmental objectives, 126 action units, 122 relations and a detailed description of the operational conditions for each action. Using this network of environmental actions, two companies were able to generate potential solutions for their environmental roadmap according to their objectives and particular contexts. These two industrial experiments revealed that the network of environmental actions was able to help the companies to establish suitable and sometimes innovative roadmaps integrating product and site-oriented approaches.

Organic photovoltaics present an emerging technology with significant potential for increasing the resource efficiencies and reducing the environmental and human health hazards of photovoltaic devices. The discipline of life-cycle assessment is applied to assess how various prospective manufacturing routes, device characteristics, uses and disposal options of organic photovoltaics influences these potential advantages. The results of this assessment are further compared to silicon based photovoltaics as a benchmark for performance. A deeper look is given to the potential human health impacts of the use of engineered nanomaterials in organic photovoltaics and the appropriateness of life-cycle assessment to evaluate this impact criteria. A newly developed life-cycle impact assessment model is presented to demonstrate whether the use of and potential hazards posed by engineered nanomaterials outweighs any of the resource efficiencies and advantages organic photovoltaics possess over silicon photovoltaics.; Les systèmes photovoltaïques organiques sont des technologies émergentes présentant de forts potentiels d’économie de ressources et de réduction des impacts sur l'environnement et la santé humaine par rapport aux dispositifs photovoltaïques conventionnels. Using wood for mechanical engineering as solid wood or glued solid timber (or glued laminated timber) requires a good knowledge of the properties of each elementary piece. Due to this lack of knowledge, woods are still not used in modern mechanical design.In the Languedoc-Roussillon French region, pines are the dominant forest resource (approx. 30 % of standing wood). The development of this resource is a major interest for the inter-branch organisation. The aim of this PhD work is to examine the possibility to predict basic useful properties of pine clear wood, based on available non-destructive methods. The study has been made on four of the most present species: Laricio black pine, Maritime pine, Mountain pine and Scots pine.Basic relevant indicators are the density (obtained by mass and volume measurements), the specific modulus of elasticity (obtained by vibrational measurements) and indicators from Near Infrared Resonance Spectroscopy (NIRS). Technological properties are the nine components of the elastic matrix (obtained by resonant ultrasonic measurements on a single specimen), hygroscopic dilatations and compressive breaking strength along the fibres (obtained in standard testing conditions).Data analysis allows to build some predictive models, unique for the whole pine selection, of basic properties, from indicators measured on each specimen of clear wood.Therefore it is possible to associate to a given piece of wood, a technical specification sheet of useful properties for mechanical design. Selected indicators are common measurements in industry and knowledge transfer is conceivable. Each interesting piece of wood (i.e. with few defects) could be rapidly characterized. Related to a good traceability this process could lead to identify clearly each piece and its properties, giving the possibility to the designer to select the best materials to his or her needs.; L’utilisation des bois pour des usages structuraux en ingénierie mécanique, sous forme de bois massifs ou éléments reconstitués, suppose une bonne connaissance des propriétés des composants bois élémentaires utilisés. Faute de cela, les bois restent exclus du monde moderne de la conception mécanique.En Languedoc-Roussillon, les pins constituent la ressource forestière principale (30 % des bois sur pieds). La valorisation de cette ressource est un enjeu majeur pour l’interprofession de la filière bois. L’objectif de ce travail de thèse est d’examiner la possibilité de prédire les propriétés de base des bois de pin « sans défauts », à partir de mesures non destructives disponibles. L’étude a été réalisée sur quatre des espèces de pins les plus présentes : pin sylvestre, pin à crochets, pin laricio et pin maritime.Les indicateurs de base retenus sont la densité (obtenue par mesure de masse et de volume), le module spécifique (obtenu par mesure vibratoire) et des indicateurs issus de la spectroscopie proche infrarouge (NIRS). Les propriétés technologiques étudiées sont les neuf constantes de la matrice élastique (obtenues par mesures ultrasonores sur une éprouvette unique), les coefficients de retrait et retraits totaux ainsi que la résistance en rupture en compression axiale (obtenus par les essais normalisés).L’analyse des données permet de construire des modèles prédictifs des propriétés de base, uniques pour l’ensemble des pins étudiés, à partir des indicateurs mesurés sur chaque échantillon de bois « sans défauts ».Il est alors possible d’associer à une pièce de bois donnée, une fiche technique des propriétés utiles à la conception mécanique. Les indicateurs choisis étant facilement mesurables dans le milieu industriel, le transfert de la méthode est envisageable. Chaque pièce de bois d’intérêt (i.e. avec peu de défauts) pourrait être rapidement caractérisée. Associé à une bonne traçabilité (par code barre par exemple) cette démarche permettrait d’identifier clairement chaque pièce et ses propriétés, donnant ainsi la possibilité au concepteur de sélectionner les matériaux les mieux adaptés à ses besoins.

The development of an eco-design method to create products involving environmental indicators to aid decision making at the stage of conceptual design, can be found in the present work. The proposed method is based on the definition and generation of a TRIPLET: a consistent relationship between materials, processes and forms. A taxonomy of shapes characterizes different shapes achievable by the manufacturing processes. A Description of Concept (DCT) includes some overall dimensions of the piece conceived and the finishing and material removal processes. An environmental indicator based on RECIPE database and adapted to the method to be able to evaluate the environmental impact. The aid integrates two approaches, deductive and inductive based on the experience of the designer. The DCT includes choosing a solid base that suggests, based on the functional surfaces defined in the process, a reflection towards a sketch of the piece concept. The different concepts developed are ranked from a multiple-criteria decision analysis based on the environmental indicator, a manufacturing cost, a performance index and a combination index obtained by fuzzy logic. The process is supported on a database linked to the required knowledge and the software tool "ECOTRIAL". A redesign application concludes the thesis and demonstrates the applicability of the proposed method., Le présent travail concerne le développement d'une méthode d'éco-conception pour la création de produits impliquant des indicateurs environnementaux pour l’aide à la prise de décision au stade de la conception conceptuelle. La méthode proposée s’appuie sur la définition et la génération d’un TRIPLET, c’est-à-dire une relation cohérente entre matériaux, procédés et formes. Une taxonomie de formes caractérise les différentes formes réalisables par les procédés de fabrication. Un tableau de description du concept (DCT) regroupe certaines dimensions globales de la pièce imaginée ainsi que les procédés d’enlèvement de matière de finition venant s’additionner au procédé de base sélectionné. Un indicateur environnemental basé sur la base RECIPE et adapté à la méthode peut être alors évalué. La démarche d’aide à la conception conçue intègre deux approches, déductive et inductive basées sur l'expérience du concepteur. Le DCT comprend le choix d’un solide de base qui suggère, à partir des surfaces fonctionnelles définies dans la démarche, une réflexion vers une esquisse du concept de pièce. Les différents concepts élaborés sont hiérarchisés à partir d’une aide à la décision multicritère basée sur l’indicateur environnemental, sur un coût de fabrication, sur un indice de performance et sur un indice de combinaison obtenu par logique floue. La démarche s’appuie sur une base de données lié aux connaissances requises et sur un outil logiciel « ECOTRIAL ». Une application de reconception d’une pièce de liaison clôt la thèse et montre l’applicabilité de la méthode proposée.

The proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) can be used to convert chemical energy into electrical energy using hydrogen which can be produced from renewable sources. Platinum (Pt) is the best catalyst used to perform PEMFC electrochemical reaction catalysis. However Pt resources are low and his production (extraction and refining) is complex. Moreover the platinum price represents an important part of the PEMFC stack cost. Nowadays this technology is too expensive to be competitive with conventional energy conversion systems, and cannot be commercialized at a large scale. In addition, PEMFC electrode platinum loading could not be reduced without affecting the system performance and durability. Thus PEMFC production cost could be reduced by recovering platinum from used fuel cells.The main goal of this thesis was to develop a platinum recovery way from fuel cells membrane electrodes-assemblies (MEAs). In order to achieve this objective the following steps were combined in a hydrometallurgical process: (i) leaching, (ii) separation, (iii) recovery. Several alternatives were tested for each step: leaching (HCl/H2O2, HCl/HNO3), separation (resin or solvent), and platinum recovery (as nanoparticles or as a complex). These platinum recovery steps were optimized using Pt/C catalysts and synthetic solutions. Then life-cycle analysis (LCA) methodology has been used to help with the process selection.Finally, about 76% of the platinum contained in multi-metallic catalysts (PtCo/C) MEAs has been recovered. The following path has been followed in this case: (i) dissolution in HCl/H2O2 solution, (ii) separation from cobalt with an ion exchange resin, (iii) recovery has nanoparticles using the polyol process. The LCA study final results showed that a significant reduction of PEMFC MEA life-cycle environmental impact could be achieved by recycling Pt at these systems end-of-life.; Les piles à combustible (PAC) de type PEMFC permettent d’assurer la conversion d’énergie chimique en énergie électrique en utilisant de l’hydrogène pouvant être produit à partir de sources renouvelables. La catalyse des réactions mises en jeu lors de cette conversion d’énergie nécessite l’utilisation de platine, dont les ressources sont faibles et la production (extraction et raffinage) complexe. De plus, du fait de son prix élevé, ce métal représente une part importante du coût de production des PEMFC. Aujourd’hui, le prix de cette technologie doit être réduit pour qu’elle soit économiquement compétitive et puisse être commercialisée à grande échelle. En outre, les charges en platine dans les électrodes de piles à combustible ne peuvent être réduites significativement sans altération de la performance et de la durabilité de ces systèmes. Donc, le développement d’une filière de recyclage pour assurer la récupération du Pt en fin de vie des PAC pourrait permettre une réduction du coût de production des PEMFC.Cette thèse a consisté à mettre en place une voie de recyclage du platine d’assemblages membrane-électrodes (AME) de PEMFC. Un procédé hydrométallurgique composé des étapes suivantes : (i) lixiviation, (ii) séparation et (iii) récupération du platine a été développé. Différentes alternatives de lixiviation (HCl/H2O2, HCl/HNO3), de séparation (par résine ou solvant), de récupération (sous forme de nanoparticules ou de sel) ont été testées. Le choix de ces derniers a ensuite été orienté grâce à une étude d’analyse du cycle de vie (ACV) réalisée à l’échelle de l’AME.Enfin, 76% du platine contenu dans des AME composées de catalyseurs Pt-Co a pu être récupéré. Ce rendement a pu être obtenu après mise en place du procédé composé des étapes suivantes : (i) dissolution du Pt par lixiviation avec le mélange HCl/H2O2, (ii) séparation du cobalt sur résine échangeuse d’ions, (iii) récupération sous forme de nanoparticules par la voie polyol. Les résultats finaux d’ACV ont montré que le recyclage du platine permettrait une nette réduction des impacts environnementaux du cycle de vie d’AME de PEMFC.

CETRA 2016, SIBENIK, CROATIE, 22-/05/2016 - 25/05/2016; The energy associated with the use of road infrastructure exceeds in few years the energy needed for its construction. The link between infrastructure and use energy has not been, however, studied in depth, particularly as the legitimate transport societal expectations are related to efficiency and safety. However, we can consider reducing the energy use by working out minor optimizations of the road infrastructure itself, which is a major challenge in a context of overall decrease of resources and increasing pressures on the environment.Experimental work is carried out here to develop one of these optimizations by improving the eco-driving potential of roads. It is based on the adequacy between vehicles dynamics, the road longitudinal profile and the speed sectioning of the infrastructure. This sectioning corresponds to the succession of speed limitations (road signs, roundabouts, intersections ...). It may allow drivers to eco-drive or not, depending on dynamics, slopes, and secondary parameters as driver reaction time or distance of visibility. Optimal speed sectioning aims to limit the mechanical braking needed by potential energy reduction, due to slopes, which can be encountered simultaneously with the needed kinetic energy reduction.Evaluation has been made on actual road sections, while recording both vehicle dynamics, driver commands, road signs positions and road longitudinal profile. Results show that energy consumption of vehicles approaching a speed reduction sign can be reduced by moving backward this sign of about 700 meters, without penalizing the primary safety function. The associated gain, for this optimization, has been evaluated to 14 liters of fuel per day for one of the experimental sites, considering traffic data. Application of this method on a network could then lead to considerable energy saving by allowing eco-driving.

National audience; Today industries from the electric and electronic sector are facing the challenge of improving the environmental performance of the product (eco-design). Various corporate attitudes and their related policy conduct industries to launch different solutions for eco-designing their product and services. Various strategic needs for environmental improvements therefore emerge. In addition important amount of eco-design methods are available. The challenge of planning which eco-design method to be used for a specific need is thus considerably increasing over time. This research therefore aims at providing a mechanism to generate some relevant eco-design options or some sets of methods for answering to the specific corporate orientations chosen. Existing eco-design methods used in the electric-electronic sector have been carefully analyzed and various ‘interactions’ between the actions followed in those methods have been identified. From this analysis, this research provides a new network of eco-design actions allowing company to explore different solutions and roadmaps for reaching concrete eco-design requirements. The company is able to select the solutions that best follow its eco-design needs depending on its specified strategic constraints and their dynamic operational context. Meanwhile, a framework was proposed to guide the company to consider these different eco-design options within its specific context. This method has been used on a case study, which has demonstrated that its ability to efficiently support the company in reaching eco-design goals.

Classical business economy is based on the sale of products. However, during the last decades, the increasing competition in the globalized economy and the resources rarefaction has led manufacturing companies in developed countries to re-orient their business towards integration of services in their product offers.The Product-Service System (PSS) concept is used to depict the resulting marketable set of products and services capable of jointly fulfilling a user’s need. PSS raise many interests for the reduction of the environmental pressure because they evolve the classical paradigm of mass production and consumption towards new mechanisms of value creation.In the PSS research field, a strong emphasis is put on their “potential” for decreasing the environmental impacts and on the necessity to design PSS as “integrated” sets of products and services. However, there is an important lack of effective support for PSS design and eco-design.This thesis aims at filling this gap by proposing a conceptual framework for PSS integrated eco-design. Its role is to support integration of products and services during PSS design until the most detailed phases by allowing communication between product engineers and service designers.A framework for PSS integrated design is proposed based on a system-based approach and allowing multi-views system modelling. An environmental evaluation framework is coupled to evaluate during design the environmental impacts generated over the PSS life cycle. The applicability of the conceptual framework is tested on an industrial case of a pneumatic energy delivery PSS., L’économie de marché est classiquement basée sur la vente de produits. Pourtant, au cours des dernières décennies, la compétitivité accrue dans une économie mondialisée et la raréfaction des ressources a conduit les entreprises industrielles des pays développés à réorienter leurs offres de produits par l’intégration de services. Le concept de Système Produit-Service (SPS) fait référence à cet ensemble commercialisable de produits et services, capables de répondre ensemble à un besoin utilisateur. Les SPS soulèvent beaucoup d’intérêt pour la réduction des pressions environnementales parce qu’ils font évoluer le paradigme classique de production et consommation de masse vers de nouveaux mécanismes de création de valeur. La recherche sur les SPS accorde beaucoup d’importance à leur « potentiel » pour la réduction des impacts environnementaux ainsi qu’à la nécessité de concevoir les SPS comme des ensembles « intégrés » de produits et services. Néanmoins, un important manque de réel support à la conception et à l’éco-conception de SPS est à noter. Cette thèse cherche à combler ce manque en proposant un cadre conceptuel pour la conception intégrée de SPS. Son rôle est d’assister l’intégration de produits et de services durant la conception de SPS jusqu’aux phases les plus détaillées en permettant la communication entre les ingénieurs produits et les concepteurs de services. Un cadre pour la conception intégrée de SPS est proposé, basé sur une approche système et permettant sa modélisation multi-vues. Un cadre d’évaluation environnemental lui est couplé pour évaluer, au cours de la conception, les impacts environnementaux générés durant le cycle de vie du SPS. L’applicabilité du cadre conceptuel est testée sur un cas industriel de SPS pour la fourniture d’énergie pneumatique.

The idea of taking into account environmental impact criteria in the process design becomes a necessity for both the industry and governments, due to increased binding regulations. Moreover, to address the issue of integrating sustainable processes, environmental impact must be weighed and balanced against other concerns, such as economic performance, product quality, and long-term sustainability. Therefore, this study introduces a methodology for environmental impact minimization and optimization of multiple conflicting criteria. A general eco-design method for biomass drying process is proposed. The main target is to develop an assessment computer-aided process engineering tool that compares environmental impacts of different operating conditions and fuel types to support decision-makers for an improved compliance to environmental criterion and sustainability.

In recent years, Design for sustainability that is a criteria of integration approach to environmental, economic and social in the product development phase has been tested and successfully implemented in the West Northern Europe, Japan and in some cities in the United States. However, in many parts of the world, especially in the newly industrialized countries of Asia, Latin and South America and especially in Africa, experiments with design for sustainability are rare view sometimes nonexistent. This work presents some results on the usability of the approach Design for Sustainability work put into a country in West Africa called "Benin" in order to judge its performance and relevance and, if possible following the appropriate ground realities. The product on which the work is performed is the machine condiments traditionally manufactured and spread throughout the Benin. This product has many harmful effects on the body because of its poor design and materials used for its design. We integrated in this research Beninese students and local businesses Beninese. These students were trained on the approach Design for Sustainability and implemented in selected companies. Which has achieved satisfactory results. The aim is firstly to see whether the approach Design for Sustainability will be effective, efficient, satisfying, easy to learn and to remember in the context of the Benin side of students and secondly if it can improve the working conditions , reorganizing management, reduce design time and increase the number of local businesses Beninese case design and manufacture of food processing equipment.; Dans ces dernières années, l'éco-socio-conception qui est une approche d'intégration des critères d'impacts environnementaux, économiques et sociaux dans la phase de développement des produits a été testée et mise en oeuvre avec succès dans l'Ouest de l'Europe du Nord, au Japon et dans certaines villes des Etats-Unis. Le produit sur lequel le travail est effectué est la machine à condiments fabriquée traditionnellement et répandue dans tout le Bénin. Ce produit présente beaucoup de conséquences néfastes sur l'organisme à cause de son mauvais dimensionnement et des matériels utilisés pour sa conception. Nous avons intégré dans ce travail de recherche les étudiants Béninois ainsi que les entreprises locales Béninoises. Ces étudiants ont suivi une formation sur l'approche Design for Sustainability et l'ont mis en oeuvre dans les entreprises sélectionnées. Ce qui a permis d'atteindre des résultats satisfaisants. Le but visé est de voir d'une part si l'approche Design for Sustainabilitysera efficace, efficience, satisfaisant, facile à apprendre et mémorisable dans le contexte Béninois du côté des étudiants et d'autre part si elle peut améliorer les conditions de travail, réorganiser la gestion, réduire le temps de conception et augmenter le chiffre d'affaire des entreprises locales Béninoises de conception et de fabrication d'équipements agro-alimentaire.

Black liquor is a by-product of paper pulp production and is daily produced in large quantities. Non-competitive to the food industry, this wood-based by-product is an important source of biopolymers. Black-liquor based concentrated and stable emulsions were obtained by dispersing an organic phase into black liquor. Among the considered dispersed phases, castor oil and ethylene dichloride were the most suited. Similar materials were prepared by polymerising the concentrated emulsions containing those dispersed phases. The obtained porous monoliths, called polyECs, were compared by life cycle assessment. The results showed that using ethylene dichloride as the dispersed phase was more beneficial for the environment than using castor oil. Through pyrolysis, the polymeric matrix of the polyECs was processed into carbon to produce carboECs. The bio-based porous carbons presented a microporous and a mesoporous structure that is of interest for energy storage, in particularly supercapacitors. The exploratory tests showed that the carboECs efficiency as supercapacitors were similar to what found in literature. The choice of black liquor as the main raw material was made through an eco-design approach. To comfort that approach, the black-liquor-based carboECs were compared to a poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene)-based carboECs using life cycle assessment. Par dispersion d’une phase organique dans la liqueur noire, des émulsions concentrées et stables ont été obtenues. Parmi les phases dispersées envisagées, l’huile de ricin et le 1,2-dichloroéthane ont été les plus adaptées. Par polymérisation de ces émulsions concentrées, la liqueur noire a permis d’obtenir des matériaux poreux appelés polyECs. L’analyse du cycle de vie a été appliquée tout au long de la préparation des polyECs et a montré que l’utilisation du 1,2-dichloroéthane, en tant que phase dispersée, serait moins néfaste pour l’environnement que l’utilisation de l’huile de ricin. Après pyrolyse, la matrice polymère des polyECs est devenue carbonée pour donner des carbones poreux, les carboECs. Grâce à leur structure microporeuse et mésoporeuse, ces carboECs biosourcés présentent un intérêt pour le stockage d’énergie, notamment les supercondensateurs. Des essais préliminaires ont montré que les performances électrochimiques des carboECs étaient comparables à la littérature. De par le choix d’un co-produit issu de la biomasse comme matière première, l’élaboration des carboECs de liqueur noire s’inscrit dans une démarche d’éco-conception. Afin de vérifier cette démarche, les carboECs issus de liqueur noire ont été comparés à des carboECs issus de poly(styrène-co-divinylbenzène), par l’analyse du cycle de vie. Cette étude comparative a montré que le procédé basé sur la liqueur noire aurait un profil écologique plus avantageux que le procédé dit pétrochimique.

Black liquor is a by-product of paper pulp production and is daily produced in large quantities. Non-competitive to the food industry, this wood-based by-product is an important source of biopolymers. Black-liquor based concentrated and stable emulsions were obtained by dispersing an organic phase into black liquor. Among the considered dispersed phases, castor oil and ethylene dichloride were the most suited. Similar materials were prepared by polymerising the concentrated emulsions containing those dispersed phases. The obtained porous monoliths, called polyECs, were compared by life cycle assessment. The results showed that using ethylene dichloride as the dispersed phase was more beneficial for the environment than using castor oil. Through pyrolysis, the polymeric matrix of the polyECs was processed into carbon to produce carboECs. The bio-based porous carbons presented a microporous and a mesoporous structure that is of interest for energy storage, in particularly supercapacitors. The exploratory tests showed that the carboECs efficiency as supercapacitors were similar to what found in literature. The choice of black liquor as the main raw material was made through an eco-design approach.
