1. Association between ACTN3 R577X genotype and risk of non-contact injury in trained athletes: A systematic review

Abstract: Background The aim of this study was to review, systematically, evidence concerning the link between the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and the rates and severity of non-contact injuries and exercise-induced muscle damage in athletes and individuals enrolled in exercise training programs. Methods A computerized literature search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus, from inception until November 2020. All included studies compared the epidemiological characteristics of non-contact injury between the different genotypes of the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism. Results Our search identified 492 records. After the screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts, 13 studies examining the association between the ACTN3 genotypes and the rate and severity of non-contact injury were included in the analysis. These studies were performed in 6 different countries (Spain, Japan, Brazil, China, Republic of Korea, and Italy) and involved a total participant pool of 1093 participants. Of the studies, 2 studies involved only women, 5 studies involved only men, and 6 studies involved both men and women. All the studies included were classified as high-quality studies (≥6 points in the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale score). Overall, evidence suggests there is an association between the ACTN3 R577X genotype and non-contact injury in 12 investigations. Six studies observed a significant association between ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and exercise induced muscle damage: two with non-contact ankle injury, three with non-contact muscle injury, and one with overall non-contact injury. Conclusion The present findings support the premise that possessing the ACTN3 XX genotype may predispose athletes to a higher probability of some non-contact injuries, such as muscle injury, ankle sprains, and higher levels of exercise-induced muscle damage.

Abstract: We study its controllability around the ground state when the linearized system is not controllable and wonder whether the quadratic term can help to recover the directions lost at the first order. More precisely, in this paper, we formulate assumptions under which the quadratic term induces a drift which prevents the small-time local controllability (STLC) of the system in appropriate spaces. For finite-dimensional systems, quadratic terms induce coercive drifts in the dynamic, quantified by integer negative Sobolev norms, along explicit Lie brackets which prevent STLC.In the context of the bilinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation, the first drift, quantified by the $H^{-1}$-norm of the control, was already observed and used to deny STLC with controls small in $L^\infty$. In this article, we improve this result by denying STLC with controls small in $W^{-1, \infty}$. Furthermore, for any positive integer $n$, we formulate assumptions under which one may observe a quadratic drift quantified by the $H^{-n}$-norm of the control and we use it to deny STLC in suitable spaces.

Abstract: International audience; The structural organization of heterogeneous and multiphase natural aggregates depends on the biophysicochemical conditions prevailing in the environment, with major ions playing a crucial role. In this study, the impact of aluminum (Al) on iron-organic matter (Fe-OM) aggregates was investigated since Al can interact with OM and can be incorporated in Fe-oxyhydroxides or adsorbed on their surface. Mimetic environmental Fe-OM-Al aggregates were synthesized at various [Fe] and [Al] with a constant [OM]. At low [Al+Fe], Fe-OM-Al aggregates exhibit a colloidal behavior. Within the aggregates, Fe is present as Fe(III)-oligomers and ferrihydrite-like nanoparticles whereas Al forms monomers, oligomers and small polymers, all bound to OM. The Al and Fe phases interacted with each other. At high [Fe+Al], the Fe(III)-oligomers and Al monomers/oligomers polymerized which increases the size and quantity of the ferrihydrite-like nanoparticles and Al polymers and then branched out the OM, resulting in a large settling network. The effect of Al on the Fe-OM aggregates structure could also have an impact on the fate of pollutants. The occurrence of Al amorphous hydroxides and the increase in ferrihydrite-like nanoparticles lead to a higher availability of surface reactive sites and subsequently to an increase in the sorption capacity of the Fe-OM aggregates for pollutants that exhibit a greater affinity for minerals than for organics.

Abstract: International audience; Despite the wide availability of large motion databases, and recent advances in exploiting them to create tailored contents, artists still spend tremendous efforts in editing and adapting existing character animations to new contexts. This motion editing problem is a well-addressed research topic. Yet only a few approaches have considered the influence of the camera angle, and the resulting visual features it yields, as a mean to control and warp a character animation. This paper proposes the design of viewpoint-dependent motion warping units that perform subtle updates on animations through the specification of visual motion features such as visibility, or spatial extent. We express the problem as a specific case of visual servoing, where the warping of a given character motion is regulated by a number of visual features to enforce. Results demonstrate the relevance of the approach for different motion editing tasks and its potential to empower virtual characters with attention-aware communication abilities.

Abstract: In this work, we adapt the {\em micro-macro} methodology to stochastic differential equations for the purpose of numerically solving oscillatory evolution equations. The models we consider are addressed in a wide spectrum of regimes where oscillations may be slow or fast. We show that through an ad-hoc transformation (the micro-macro decomposition), it is possible to retain the usual orders of convergence of Euler-Maruyama method, that is to say, uniform weak order one and uniform strong order one half. We also show that the same orders of uniform accuracy can be achieved by a simple integral scheme. The advantage of the micro-macro scheme is that, in contrast to the integral scheme, it can be generalized to higher order methods.

Abstract: International audience; While studies have explored how habitat amount drives weed assemblages in agroecosystems, knowledge remains limited of the effects of habitat connectivity. The response-effect trait framework provides insights into the mechanisms underpinning the relationship between landscape structure and the taxonomic diversity and abundance of weed assemblages. This study evaluated how habitat connectivity and habitat amount affect weed diversity and abundance in winter cereal fields, and whether these effects are driven by the functional composition of weed assemblages. We sampled weeds in 27 winter cereal fields. We measured habitat connectivity and habitat amount provided by wooded, grassland and cropland elements. We selected five traits related to the dispersal, establishment, and competitive abilities of weed species likely to respond to landscape structure: seed number per plant, type of reproduction, seed dry mass, plant vegetative height and seed germination rate. The functional composition of weed assemblages was assessed using community weighted mean trait values. Weed diversity and abundance were used as proxies of weed management. The taxonomic approach did not reveal any effect of landscape structure on weed diversity and abundance. Only the grassland elements that contributed to habitat connectivity, and to a lesser extent to habitat amount, drove the functional composition of weed assemblages. High habitat amount favoured species with many seeds, while high habitat connectivity favoured species with fewer seeds, a higher ability to reproduce vegetatively and higher seed germination rates. In turn, higher seed germination rates increased weed evenness and reduced weed abundance. Some of these relationships were influenced by the presence of rare species. Overall, high connectivity provided by grassland elements increases weed evenness and reduces weed abundance by shaping weed functional composition. Our study suggests that land-use planning policies that enhance the connectivity provided by grassland elements could be considered as a weed management strategy reconciling ecology and agronomy.

Abstract: International audience; We present a new numerical modelling study of subduction initiation at (hyper-extended) magma-poor and magma-rich continental passive margins. In particular, we test how the structure and rheological stratification of these two end-member types control the formation and thermo-mechanical evolution of subduction zones. The serpentinization of mantle lithosphere in a magma-poor continental rifted margin leads to rheological decoupling at the base of the continental crust, which induces shear localization during subsequent shortening. Under these conditions, a shear zone propagates into the mantle lithosphere and leads to subduction initiation at the transition between ocean and passive margin. In contrast, a magma-rich rifted continental margin is rheologically coupled, which creates a buttressing effect and transfer of deformation into the oceanic domain during shortening, where the subduction zone initiates. These results are quantitatively compared and in agreement with the geological record of subduction initiation in the Alps and Dinarides – Hellenides, where the relics of end-member types of continental rifted margins of the same Adriatic micro-continent bordering the Alpine Tethys and Neotethys oceans, respectively, are observed.

Abstract: International audience; We consider here forecasting models in ecology or in agronomy, aiming at decision making based upon exceeding a quantitative threshold. We address specifically how to link the intrinsic quality of the model (its accuracy) with its decisional quality, ie its capacity to avoid false decisions and their associated costs. The accuracy of the model can be evaluated by the ρ of the regression of observed values versus estimated ones or by the determination coefficient R2. We show that the decisional quality depends not only of this accuracy but also of the threshold retained to make the decision as well as on the state of nature. The two kinds of decisional errors consists either in deciding no action while an action is required (false negatives) or to act while it is useless (false positives). We also prove that the costs associated to those decisions depend also both of the accuracy of the model and of the value of the decision threshold.

Abstract: International audience; Introduction: This study explores the value of using motion analysis to evaluate cervical and jaw ROM on students with or without bruxism when comparing Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to sham in school settings. Methods: A feasibility study was run with 48 volunteer students from an osteopathic educational institution. Random sequence for allocation was generated using a 1:1 ratio and block size of four to either OMT or sham treatment (control group). The chosen motion outcomes of interest were the lateral jaw range of motion, jaw opening, cervical rotation and side-bending. ROM was measured averaging over three repeated movements at baseline, immediately after the 1st treatment, one week before the 2nd treatment, and immediately after the second treatment using video-based analysis with 15 body landmarks. Results: Repeated measures of joint motion at baseline showed high levels of reliability (ICC ranging from 0.953 to 0.985). Motion analysis detected clinically important differences between OMT and sham one-week posttreatment for jaw lateral ROM (3.3 degrees; p = 0.018) and cervical rotation ROM (12.0 degrees; p = 0.003) in participants with bruxism but not in those without. Magnitude of differences were increased for all parameters following the second treatment (lateral jaw movement; 4.8 degrees, p = 0.005; jaw opening; 5.5 degrees, p = 0.002; cervical side-bending; 9.2 degrees, p = 0.023; cervical rotation; 18.2 degrees, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Motion analysis is capable of detecting the effects of OMT on cervical and jaw ROM in students with bruxism but not without. Finally, the study showed the feasibility of introducing usual standards for clinical trials and sham treatment in an educational setting with students.

According to the particular morphology and wing venation of Megalyrhyssalus gen. nov. a new subfamily Megalyrhyssalinae subfam. nov. is created. The subfamily Seneciobraconinae is synonymised under Protorhyssalinae (syn. nov.). Additionally, a key to the genera of Braconidae having second recurrent vein (2m-cu) in forewing is provided.

Abstract: International audience; Earthworms are widespread soil organisms that contribute to a wide range of ecosystem services. As such, it is important to improve our knowledge, still scanty, of the factors that drive the assembly of earthworm communities. The aim of the present study was to conjointly evaluate the effects on the assembly of earthworm communities of i) soil properties (texture, organic matter content, and pH), ii) grassland management (grassland age, livestock unit, and type of fertilization), iii) landscape diversity (richness, diversity of surrounding habitats, and grassland plant diversity), and iv) presence of hedgerows. The study was conducted in temperate grasslands of Brittany, France. Earthworms were sampled in 24 grasslands and, in three of these grasslands, they were sampled near a hedgerow or near a ditch (control without a hedgerow). Soil properties explained the larger portion of the variation in the earthworm community parameters compared to grassland management or landscape diversity. The increase in soil organic matter content and pH were the most favorable factors for earthworm abundance and biomass, in particular for endogeic species. Regarding grassland management, the increase in the livestock unit was the most damaging factor for earthworm communities, in particular for the anecic earthworm biomass and endogeic species richness. Surprisingly, landscape diversity negatively affected the total earthworm abundance and epigeic earthworm biomass, but it was related to an increase in the epi-anecic species. At a finer scale, we also demonstrated that the presence of hedgerows surrounding grasslands enhanced earthworm species richness, especially within the epigeic and anecic ecological categories. This study highlights that the earthworm ecological categories respond specifically to environmental filters; further studies need to be conducted to elucidate the factors that drive the assembly of earthworm communities at this ecological category level. We recommend that policymakers should act on landscape management to favor earthworm diversity in order to improve the ecosystem services they drive.

Abstract: International audience; The Atlantic coast of north-west France is one of the classic shell-midden regions of the European Mesolithic, made famous by the excavations of Téviec and Hoedic in the first half of the 20th century. At this time, there was a lack of interest in the food refuse component of shell middens. By the end of the 1990s new study methods and techniques had also contributed to a better description of the varied activities of these coastal populations. In Atlantic France, new excavations have demonstrated that shell middens are not a site type but rather one of a variety of stratigraphic units that make up the total settlement pattern. Our perception of the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers of the French Atlantic coast has now changed from a population pre-occupied with day-to-day survival and forced to eat shellfish out of necessity, to fisher-hunter-gatherers involved in varied activities. Abstract: International audience; Hafnium and neodymium isotopes provide robust tool tracers for tracking the mechanisms of crustal generation and differentiation, from mantle extraction to the late geological processes undergone by the studied rocks. Though these two isotope systems commonly behave similarly and define a positive correlation between 143 Nd/ 144 Nd and 176 Hf/ 177 Hf referred to as the "terrestrial array", they may differ in terrains having a complex geological history, such as Archean cratons. This study presents the first combined whole-rock Hf and Nd isotopic analyses of Archean mafic and felsic igneous rocks from the Sangmelima terranes in the Ntem Complex (located in the Northwest of Congo Craton (NW CC) in southern Cameroon). It mainly consists of Mesoarchean charnockites and tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) suites, greenstone belts, mafic enclaves or dykes, and potassic granitoids. Mesoarchean charnockite and TTG suites have subchondritic initial 176 Hf/ 177 Hf and 143 Nd/ 144 Nd ratios with a mean initial (suffix (i)) ε 176 Hf (i) and ε 143 Nd (i) of-3.30 ± 1.40 and-3.85 ± 0.65 (2SD) respectively, implying the involvement of Eo-to Paleoarchean components in their petrogenesis. The bulk rock initial Hf and Nd isotope compositions of the gabbro and gabbronorites are suprachondritic (ε 176 Hf (i) = +3.4 to + 8.2; ε 143 Nd (i) = +0.9 to + 1.6), indicate that they were derived from a depleted mantle source. Coupled with pre-existing data from the literature, these new Hf-Nd isotopic data indicate that two episodes of mantle-derived mafic magmatism in the Ntem Complex occurred during the Mesoarchean period (i.e., at ~ 3.1 and 2.86 billion years (Ga)). Neoarchean dolerite dykes show broadly chondritic to supra-chondritic ε 176 Hf (i) and ε 143 Nd (i) values of-0.28 to + 4.53 and T CHUR ages of 2.74-2.76 Ga, suggesting the derivation of doleritic magma from a depleted mantle source with either none or limited crustal residence time. Considering other Archean domains of the NW CC, there were multi-stage magmatism events and crustal growth events occurred at ~3.75-3.31 Ga, ~3.26-3.0 Ga, ~2.92-2.85 Ga, and ~2.75-2.72 Ga from Eoarchean to Neoarchean in the NW Congo Craton.

Abstract: International audience; Excess nutrients from agricultural and urban development have created a cascade of ecological crises around the globe. Nutrient pollution has triggered eutrophication in most freshwater and coastal ecosystems, contributing to a loss in biodiversity, harm to human health, and trillions in economic damage every year. Much of the research conducted on nutrient transport and retention has focused on surface environments, which are both easy to access and biologically active. However, surface characteristics of watersheds, such as land use and network configuration, often do not explain the variation in nutrient retention observed in rivers, lakes, and estuaries. Recent research suggests subsurface processes and characteristics may be more important than previously thought in determining watershed-level nutrient fluxes and removal. In a small watershed in western France, we used a multi-tracer approach to compare surface and subsurface nitrate dynamics at commensurate spatiotemporal scales. We combined 3-D hydrological modeling with a rich biogeochemical dataset from 20 wells and 15 stream locations. Water chemistry in the surface and subsurface showed high temporal variability, but groundwater was substantially more spatially variable, attributable to long transport times (10–60 years) and patchy distribution of the iron and sulfur electron donors fueling autotrophic denitrification. Isotopes of nitrate and sulfate revealed fundamentally different processes dominating the surface (heterotrophic denitrification and sulfate reduction) and subsurface (autotrophic denitrification and sulfate production). Agricultural land use was associated with elevated nitrate in surface water, but subsurface nitrate concentration was decoupled from land use. Dissolved silica and sulfate are affordable tracers of residence time and nitrogen removal that are relatively stable in surface and subsurface environments. Together, these findings reveal distinct but adjacent and connected biogeochemical worlds in the surface and subsurface. Characterizing how these worlds are linked and decoupled is critical to meeting water quality targets and addressing water issues in the Anthropocene.

Abstract: Orbitally-induced cycles build stratigraphic sequences on time spans ranging from several thousand to several million years by altering depositional conditions. Previous works have shown that the gas-bearing Faraghan Formation (Cisuralian) has been impacted by orbitally-forced climatic change, resulting in the development of sedimentary sequences on astronomical cycle timescales. Obliquity evolution has been observed in the Faraghan Formation, with ∼1.2 Ma and ∼173 ka modulation cyclicities recorded. We attribute a strong sedimentary noise observed in the Faraghan Formation, which is distinct from the other noises, to a transregional sea-level rise, most likely correspond to MFS P10. The prolific gas zones (PGZ) in the Faraghan Formation are in consistent relationship with obliquity maxima and depositional noise events, which are associated with high obliquity power. This constant offers the hypothesis that obliquity altered the sedimentary regime in such a way that favorable conditions for reservoir quality development occurred. The ∼173 ka obliquity modulation cycle is recorded from the Late Paleozoic. It is postulated that this periodicity was the causal mechanism for the creating of the Faraghan Formation's fifth-order sequences. The reconstructed sea-level patterns from sedimentary noise modeling (DYNOT) confirm the three third-order sequences proposed for the Faraghan Formation by displaying three different sedimentary noises. The detected ∼1.2 Ma obliquity modulation cycles match the ∼1.2 Ma periodicities filtered from the DYNOT median values, indicating that the ∼1.2 Ma orbital cycle is one of the primary drivers of regional sea level. ∼1.2 Ma obliquity modulation cycles are correlated with third-order sequences, implying that the aforementioned cycle was one of the key mechanisms causing the creation of these third-order sequences.

Abstract: International audience; Marine spatial planning (MSP) often favors blue growth objectives over biodiversity conservation, diminishing its role in promoting sustainability. We used in-depth qualitative document analysis to assess how conservation principles and priorities are included in five case studies to identify a path for better integrating conservation with MSP. Five themes emerged, reflecting conservation in MSP from weak to strong inclusion: (1) prioritizing economy; (2) ecosystems as limits; (3) social-ecological systems; (4) ecosystems as functional; and (5) ecosystems as fundamental. Our analysis suggests MSP priorities for managing or mitigating impacts and conservation was less apparent, though some plans appear more prepared to integrate conservation. Abstract: International audience; Agricultural abandonment followed by vegetation succession is a major land-use and land-cover (LULC) change in Europe. Such dynamic has critical consequences on biodiversity and ecosystem services (ES) and disservices (EDS). Understanding the perceptions of succession and its effects by local stakeholders is crucial for sound landscape planning. This study addressed these issues, focusing on a territory in the Massif Central region of France where multiple LULC changes have occurred in the last decades, including abandonment. We aim at identifying stakeholders’ perceptions and their drivers regarding old fields as well as the subsequent post-cultural vegetation stages from partial open shrublands to forests. We conducted 29 semi-structured interviews centered on LULC changes with three groups of stakeholders: local decision-makers, land managers, farmers. The terminology used to refer to old fields and the ES and EDS associated with them were recorded along with a thematic analysis. Results revealed the wide range of words and expressions used to refer to old fields, together with inconsistencies between terminology and vegetation stages. ES and EDS associated to old fields varied between stakeholder groups, but were essentially regulating and cultural services. The thematic analysis demonstrated that old fields are considered as a degradation compared to traditional agriculture and a loss of human control on vegetation. Old fields are also perceived as natural ecosystems which persist in front of other LULC changes like artificialization and land use intensification. Those findings show that abandonment should be considered in relation to other LULC changes for land planning decisions? and to the plurality of perceptions of old fields.

Abstract: International audience; The inter-annual land surface temperature (LST) is a meteorological indicator of urban environments, affecting energy consumption and quality of life. In this study, the annual LST variability (ALSTV) of a rapidly urbanizing region in Iran including Karaj, Shahriar and Mohammad-Shahr cities and their surrounding suburbs was esti-mated using Landsat-8 images. Pixel-based image classification and object-based segmentation techniques were employed to extract built-up patches and spectrally homogeneous regions. Using the multiple regression analysis, the ALSTV of built-up patches was modeled as a function of their structure and the spatial characteristics of other land-use patches located in their respective segments (as neighborhood factors). A Cellular Automata model was utilized to simulate the expansion of built-up area up to 5% and, therefore, estimate their future ALSTV. The mean ALSTV was highest in urban areas (33.25 +/- 7.41 degrees C), while the lowest mean value of 24.12 +/- 3.24 degrees C was in green covers. The ALSTV of built-up patches were positively associated with their area and the percentage and size of neighborhood built-up patches, while negatively with the percentage of neighborhood green patches. To create a thermally comfortable landscape, additional green patch allocation and preventing excessive urban patch growth are required in all large built-up segments.

Abstract: International audience; One method to study the impact of climate change on host-parasitoid relationships is to compare populations along geographical gradients in latitude, altitude or longitude. Indeed, temperatures, which vary along geographic gradients directly shape the life traits of parasitoids and indirectly shift their populations through trophic interactions with hosts and plants. We explored the pros and cons of using these comparisons along gradients. We highlighted that the longitudinal gradients, although understudied, are well correlated to winter warming and summer heat waves and we draw attention to the impact of the increase in extreme events, which will probably be the determining parameters of the effect of climate change on host-parasitoid relationships.

Abstract: International audience; Few studies have examined the impact of a preseason training intervention through systematic measures in Pro D2 rugby union (RU). Therefore, this study aimed to describe the effects of 12 weeks of preseason training (three blocks) on body composition, running performance, biochemical markers, and workload (WL) variation in professional RU players. Physiological (physical and biochemical) responses to preseason WL were analyzed by examining changes in anthropometric characteristics, Yo-Yo intermittent recovery level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1) test, blood samples (BS), Hooper index (1–7), the 10-Hz global positioning system (GPS), and session rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE) in nineteen elite male players. Changes throughout the preseason were analyzed using the one-way and mixed-model analysis of variance. Significant (p < 0.01) improvements occurred in anthropometry and Yo-Yo IR1 running performance in forwards and backs. Total distance (p < 0.01) and impact (p < 0.05) during the second block were meaningfully higher than the other two blocks, with backs showing higher values than forwards. As expected, WL decreased significantly (p < 0.01) during the last training block. The WL variations were correlated with changes in biochemical markers over the preseason period. The collected data can be used for i) profiling French Pro D2 rugby championships players, ii) establishing effective training strategies, and iii) setting preseason WL expectations.

Abstract: International audience; Metabolomics is an incredibly valuable tool in helping understand insect responses to cold. It not only characterizes how low temperature disrupts metabolic homeostasis, but also how it triggers fundamental adaptive responses, e.g. homeoviscous adaptation and cryoprotectant accumulation. This review outlines the advantages and disadvantages of different metabolomic technologies (NMR- vs. MS-based) and screening approaches (targeted vs. untargeted). We emphasize the importance of time series and tissue-specific data, as well as the challenges of disentangling insect vs. microbiome responses. In addition, we set out the need to move beyond simple correlations between metabolite abundance and tolerance phenotypes by undertaking functional assessments, e.g. using dietary supplementation or injections. We highlight studies at the vanguard of employing these approaches, and where key knowledge gaps remain.

Abstract: We first establish the existence of an unbounded solution to a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) with generator g allowing a general growth in the state variable y and a sub-quadratic growth in the state variable z , when the terminal condition satisfies a sub-exponential moment integrability condition, which is weaker than the usual exp ( μ L ) -integrability and stronger than L p ( p > 1 ) -integrability. Then, we prove the uniqueness and comparison theorem for the unbounded solutions of the preceding BSDEs under some additional assumptions and establish a general stability result for the unbounded solutions. Finally, we derive the nonlinear Feynman–Kac formula in this context.

Abstract: The Moroccan Anti-Atlas orogenic belt encloses several Precambrian inliers comprising two major Neoproterozoic ophiolitic complexes: the Sirwa and Bou Azzer ophiolites. These ophiolites expose crustal and mantle units, thrusting over fragments of a long-lived intra-oceanic arc system. We present a detailed geochronological and petro-geochemical study of three mafic/ultramafic units of these two ophiolites: the Khzama sequence (Sirwa ophiolite) and the Northern and Southern Aït Ahmane sequences (Bou Azzer ophiolite). The crystallization of layered metagabbros from the Bou Azzer ophiolite (North Aït Ahmane sequence) has been dated here at 759 ± 2 Ma (U-Pb on zircons). This new age for the Bou Azzer ophiolite is similar to the formation of the Sirwa ophiolite (762 Ma) and suggests that both units formed during the same spreading event. Metabasalts of the three units show tholeiitic signature but with variable subduction-related imprints marked by LILE enrichments, HFSE depletions and variable Ti contents, similar to modern back-arc basin basalts (BABB). Their back-arc origin is also supported by the geochemical signature of ultramafic units showing very low contents in major and trace incompatible elements (Al2O3: 0.12–1.53 wt%, Ti: 3.5–64.2 ppm and Nb: 0.004–0.10 ppm), attesting of a highly refractory protolith. This is in agreement with the high Cr (0.44–0.81) and low to intermediate Mg (0.25–0.73) of their constitutive Cr-spinels. Dynamic melting models suggest that these serpentinites experienced intense and polyphased hydrous melting events, strongly influenced by supra-subduction zone SSZ-fluid influx and subduction-related melt percolation. Being particularly affected by these SSZ-melt/rock interactions and closer to arc units to the south, the Sirwa ophiolite and the South Aït Ahmane unit of the Bou Azzer ophiolite likely represent an early stage of the arc-back-arc system, which has been more influenced by the magmatic products of the arc activity compared to the North Aït Ahmane unit of the Bou Azzer ophiolite., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: International audience; Recently recognized as part of Final Lateglacial tool-kits, trapezoids remain enigmatic tools. The analytical part of this paper focuses on macro and micro-wear traces observed on Late Laborian trapezoids (GS1-Holocene transition, Atlantic facade) and their meaning from a utilitarian point of view. The consistency in the nature and organization of the traces leads us to interpret these implements as transverse projectile tips. These results confirm previous assumptions and establish the emergence of the Late Laborian trapezoids as an unprecedented innovation, marking a break from previous local weapon technology (points of piercing type and/or lateral inserts). These results provide a starting point to discuss the origin and significance of these artifacts. Their presence in different parts of Europe during the Lateglacial had been tentatively interpreted fifteen years ago as the result of large-scale cultural renewals in a context of progressively milder climatic and environmental conditions. At the current state of research, this diffusionist hypothesis suffers from a lack of geographic, techno-economic and functional continuity. Although techno-functional investigations inevitably raise the question of the target of these projectile points, current data do not provide a precise answer. It is however suggested that variations in stone points type during the Late Laborian was not necessarily related to prey type.

Abstract: International audience; This study aimed to determine whether body composition affected cardiovascular responses of normal, overweight and obese women by comparing heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) during a graded submaximal treadmill exercise. Thirty five healthy non-smoking, premenopausal women (age 30.8 ± 9.5 yr; height 1.66 ± 0.05 m; weight 73.8 ± 18.9 kg; body fat 36.2 ± 9.5%; maximum oxygen uptake 33.5 ± 8.1 mL·min·kg) volunteered for this study, and were classified into three groups based on BMI: normal weight (NOR; ≤24.9 kg·m), overweight (OVW; 25-29.9 kg·m) and obese (OBE; ≥30 kg·m). Participants performed a submaximal graded test at 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% of maximal oxygen uptake, during which HR, systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured. At rest, participants of OBE group had higher BP than NOR and OVW. During the submaximal graded test, HR, SBP and MAP increased as a function of intensity. There were no group differences in HR, but greater SBP, DBP and MAP in OBE compared to NOR and OBW at all intensities except 60%. Overall, our study further contributes to underscore the importance of stress testing specifically to evaluate the increased risks apparently healthy obese women are placed at to developing diseases from the chronic exposure to raised BP, despite normal resting BP and HR responses during exercise.

In a virtual ecosystem, players compete for habitats and resources, unintentionally reproducing many ecological phenomena. We propose to repurpose this AI to test ecological hypotheses that have been intractable using traditional approaches.

Abstract: International audience; The Upper Cretaceous sedimentary sequence at International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1512 in the Ceduna Sub-basin of the Great Australian Bight represents a continuous, > 690 m thick interval of black silty clay and claystone spanning the lower Turonian through Lower Campanian (~10 million years). Sediments were deposited in an elongate, ~E-W oriented, ~2500 km long rift system that developed between Australia and Antarctica with an open-ocean connection to the west and a continental bridge to the east. Site U1512 cores provide a unique, continuous record of Late Cretaceous deposition in the Ceduna Sub-basin on the hanging wall of the Wallaroo Fault Zone. Study of U1512 samples could provide both an important high-latitude, southern hemisphere perspective on climatic evolution during the peak and demise of the Cretaceous hothouse and an offshore record of the sedimentation history in the basin during the Late Cretaceous portion of the Gondwanan breakup. The Upper Cretaceous sequence at Site U1512 is notable for its lithologic uniformity. Burrow-mottled to massive claystone and silty claystone make up the majority of the almost 700 m section, while rare (n = 28) isolated, 2 to 21 cm thick medium to fine sandstone beds are a minor lithology. Macrofossils present include common inoceramids and rare occurrences of other bivalves and ammonites. Abstract: International audience; We present an automatic method that allows to retarget poses from a source to a target character by transferring the shape of the target character onto the desired pose of the source character. By considering shape instead of pose transfer our method allows to better preserve the contextual meaning of the source pose, typically contacts between body parts, than pose-based strategies. To this end, we propose an optimization-based method to deform the source shape in the desired pose using three main energy functions: similarity to the target shape, body part volume preservation, and collision management to preserve existing contacts and prevent penetrations. The results show that our method allows to retarget complex poses with several contacts to different morphologies, and is even able to create new contacts when morphology changes require them, such as increases in body size. To demonstrate the robustness of our approach to different types of shapes, we successfully apply it to basic and dressed human characters as well as wild animal models, without the need to adjust parameters.

Abstract: co-auteur étranger; International audience; The southern part of the Mozambique Channel is characterized by a cluster of isolated seamounts, including the Bassas da India atoll and Europa Island, ranging in latitude from 20°S to 22°S and from 38° to 40° in longitude, and located at the Rovuma-Lwandle plate boundary. Only Cenozoic carbonate platforms have previously been studied in this region, with very little work done on the volcanic history. We confirm here the volcanic nature of the basement of the Bassa da India/Europa complex by providing important constraints on the setting of this hitherto poorly understood volcanism.Recent bathymetric surveys and dredging operations allowed us to map and date these seamounts, comprising, from west to east, the Hall Bank, the Jaguar Bank, Bassas da India, Ptolemee, and Europa. In addition, we discovered, to the south of Bassas da India, two large new polygenetic volcanic edifices, Pamela Seamount 1 (PS1) and Pamela Seamount 2 (PS2), showing heights and diameters of up to 900 m and 13 km, respectively. Mapping and statistical analysis carried out revealed that the volcanic structures of the Bassas da India/Europa complex are organized along two main alignments with different stages of development: (i) a NE-SW volcanic alignment characterized by volcanic ridges up to 700 m in height, comprising small individual volcanic cones; and (ii) a NW-SE volcanic alignment in which many large and well-developed individual volcanic cones can be found. From this distribution of the volcanism, we suggest that the large volcanic edifices of the Bassas da India/Europa complex were fed by long-lived magma systems, repeatedly supplied from deep magma reservoirs through a significant network of dykes and faults, with lateral injections of magma guided by a dense network of faults allowing magma to reach the surface along rift-zones. 40Ar/39Ar dating confirms that the volcanism covers a period from the Oligo-Miocene to the Pleistocene, and probably extends to the present day. The two volcanic alignments are also consistent with the tectonic features already recognized for the region and are spatially superimposed by active seismicity. Magma ascent is strongly controlled by large pre-existing crustal structures.

Abstract: In the present paper, we describe and figure some rare lower Aptian (Lower Cretaceous) helical ammonoids from the Deshayesites deshayesi Zone of the Argiles à Plicatules Formation (Paris Basin, NE France). Those are the only helical ammonoids known in this zone so far. They were only occasionally evoked in literature and this is probably on the basis of the specimens here described that, according to us, the genus Toxoceratoides (Helicancylidae) was wrongly regarded as possessing an early helical spiral part. We demonstrate here that these specimens are not belonging to Toxoceratoides nor Helicancylidae: they are interpreted as ‘abnormally’ helical representatives of the genus Ancyloceras (Ancyloceratidae) or a new taxon of Ancyloceratidae.; Dans le présent article, nous décrivons et figurons de rares ammonites hélicoïdales aptiennes inférieures (Crétacé inférieur) provenant de la zone à Deshayesites deshayesi de la formation des Argiles à Plicatules (bassin de Paris, NE de la France). Elles représentent les seules ammonites hélicoïdales provenant de cette zone connue à ce jour. Elles ont été occasionnellement évoquées dans la littérature et c’est probablement sur la base des spécimens décrits dans le présent travail que le genre Toxoceratoides (Helicancylidae) a été selon nous incorrectement interprété comme possédant une spire hélicoïdale. Nous montrons dans ce travail que ces spécimens n’appartiennent ni au genre Toxoceratoides ni aux Helicancylidae en général: ils sont interprétés comme étant des représentants hélicoïdaux « anormaux » du genre Ancyloceras (Ancyloceratidae) ou bien un nouveau taxon d’Ancyloceratidae.

Abstract: International audience; Species diversity can vary dramatically across lineages due to differences in speciation and extinction rates. Here, we explore the effects of several plant traits on diversification, finding that most traits have opposing effects on diversification. For example, outcrossing may increase the efficacy of selection and adaptation but also decrease mate availability, two processes with contrasting effects on lineage persistence. Such opposing trait effects can manifest as differences in diversification rates that depend on ecological context, spatiotemporal scale, and associations with other traits. The complexity of pathways linking traits to diversification suggests that the mechanistic underpinnings behind their correlations may be difficult to interpret with any certainty, and context dependence means that the effects of specific traits on diversification are likely to differ across multiple lineages and timescales. This calls for taxonomically and context-controlled approaches to studies that correlate traits and diversification. © 2023

Abstract: Korehelorus jinjuensis gen. et sp. nov., a new genus and species of the family Heloridae, is described and figured from a specimen preserved in the dark grey shales of the lower Albian Jinju Formation (Republic of Korea). This description further increases the diversity of the family Heloridae in the Mesozoic and provides additional evidence for a rapid decline of the latter in the Cretaceous. To date, no explanations nor hypotheses have been proposed to explain this particular pattern but we assume and hypothesize that the species and genus diversities of helorid wasps are linked with the diversity of their hypothetical hosts (i.e., Chrysopidae or closely related extinct lineages). We show that the Cretaceous chrysopoid diversity is dominated by the Mesochrysopidae and stem-chrysopid subfamily (Limaiinae), which declined and/or die out through the Cretaceous. We find a peak of diversity for the Heloridae, synchronous with that of the Mesochrysopidae and Limaiinae, leading us to suggest that the decline of these clades in the Cretaceous consequently triggered a decline in the Heloridae.

Abstract: International audience; Probabilistic record linkage is a process of combining data from different sources, when such data refer to common entities and identifying information is not available. Fellegi and Sunter proposed a probabilistic record linkage framework that takes into account multiple non-identifying information, but is limited to simple binary comparison between matching variables. In our work, we propose an extension of this model for mixed-type comparison vectors. We develop a mixture model for handling comparison values of low prevalence categorical matching variables, and a mixture of hurdle gamma distribution for handling comparison values of continuous matching variables. The parameters are estimated by means of the Expectation Conditional Maximization (ECM) algorithm. Through a Monte Carlo simulation study, we evaluate both the posterior probability estimation for a record pair to be a match, and the prediction of matched record pairs. The simulation results indicate that the proposed methods outperform existing ones in most considered cases. The proposed methods are applied on a real dataset, to perform linkage between a registry of patients suffering from venous thromboembolism in the Brest district area (GETBO) and the French national health information system (SNDS).

Abstract: International audience; This article presents field measurements that document the physical and chemical response of riverbeds to critical hydrological and sedimentary forcing in the Selune River (France). The river flows into the bay of Mont Saint-Michel and thus impacts numerous economic activities and the spawning of several key species such as Atlantic salmon and lamprey. To restore the hydro-sedimentary continuity of the river, two dams are currently being removed. Significant changes in the stream flow regime, stream-aquifer exchanges and sediment transport are expected, hence the monitoring campaign. A network autonomous sensor (water level, temperature, conductivity, oxygen and pressure differential) was installed on 18 October 2021 at various depths in the riverbed and the river for a one-year period. This was to continuously record variations in the main physico-chemical variables and relate them to surface processes. To assess the impact of dam removal on these variables, two measurement sites were chosen: one upstream of the dams where flow conditions remained stable, and another downstream of the dams where a large amount of fine sediment has been released. This original data can be used to determine the biogeochemical functioning of the hyporheic zone and its coupling with dynamical flow and sedimentary processes.

Abstract: International audience; Rifting of the Red Sea resulted in the formation of one of the highest escarpments on our planet: the Great Escarpment of southwestern Saudi Arabia. Published low-temperature geochronology ages are around the Paleogene-Neogene transition, but geomorphic features like the height, the steepness and the preservation of the escarpment may indicate a younger aspect to the exhumation history. Here we use apatite fission track (AFT) and (U-Th-Sm)/He (AHe) cooling ages in combination with a geomorphic analysis of the region from Jeddah to Jizan to test this idea. Pooled AFT ages range from to Ma (1σ). The base of the AFT partial annealing zone prior to rock uplift is at ∼200 m elevation in most of the studied area, but track length data show that the amount of exhumation is insufficient to affect all coastal plain samples. Consistent with earlier estimates in the literature, the total amount of rock uplift is estimated to be ∼4 km. Single grain AHe ages range from to Ma (1σ) and do not have a clear trend with distance from the escarpment. Overall, the distribution of data appears to indicate widespread downwearing of the elevated topography around the rift flank. In contrast, geomorphic analysis that indicates escarpment retreat including a flexural uplift response. We suggest that the conflict between geomorphological and geochronological data can be resolved by invoking a two-stage erosion model. The first stage involved dome-shaped rift flank uplift since initiation of the Afar plume, downwearing of this topography and cooling recorded by the AFT ages. The second stage involved the massive erosion that excavated the present day Saudi escarpment and reset the AHe ages. We suggest that this second stage is related to the formation of oceanic lithosphere since 13 Ma in the Red Sea, associated downwarping of the margin and flexural updoming of the eastern rift flank. The consequential orographic precipitation initiated asymmetric erosion and formation of a retreating escarpment. This model is consistent with the large age difference between Miocene AFT and Pliocene AHe ages and the geomorphic metrics.

Abstract: International audience; Diffuse pollution of the environment by pesticides has become a major soil threat to non-target organisms, such as earthworms for which declines have been reported. However some endogeic species are still abundant and persist in intensively cultivated fields, suggesting they become tolerant to long-term anthropogenic pressure. We thus considered the working hypothesis that populations of Aporrectodea caliginosa earthworms from conventionally managed fields developed a tolerance to pesticides compared with those from organically managed fields. To investigate this hypothesis, we studied earthworm populations of the same genetic lineage from soils that were either lowly or highly contaminated by pesticides to detect any constitutive expression of differentially expressed molecular pathways between these populations. Earthworm populations were then experimentally exposed to a fungicide-epoxiconazole-in the laboratory to identify different molecular responses when newly exposed to a pesticide. State-of-the-art omics technology (RNA sequencing) and bioinformatics were used to characterize molecular mechanisms of tolerance in a non-targeted way. Additional physiological traits (respirometry, growth, bioaccumulation) were monitored to assess tolerance at higher levels of biological organization. In the present study, we generated the de novo assembly transcriptome of A. caliginosa consisting of 64,556 contigs with N50 = 2862 pb. In total, 43,569 Gene Ontology terms were identified for 21,593 annotated sequences under the three main ontologies (biological processes, cellular components and molecular functions). Overall, we revealed that two same lineage populations of A. caliginosa earthworms, inhabiting similar pedo-climatic environment, have distinct gene expression pathways after they long-lived in differently managed agricultural soils with a contrasted pesticide exposure history for more than 22 years. The main difference was observed regarding metabolism, with upregulated pathways linked to proteolytic activities and the mitochondrial respiratory chain in the highly exposed population. This study improves our understanding of the long-term impact of chronic exposure of soil engineers to pesticide residues.

Abstract: International audience; The hologenome concept considers the entity formed by a host and its microbiota, the holobiont, as new level of hierarchical organization subject to neutral and selective forces. We used grafted plants to formally evaluate the hologenome concept. We analyzed the root-endosphere microbiota of two independent watermelon and grapevine plant systems, including ungrafted and reciprocal-grafting combinations. Grafted and ungrafted hosts harbor markedly different microbiota compositions. Furthermore, the results indicate a non-random assembly of bacterial communities inhabiting the root endosphere of chimeric plants with interactive effect of both the rootstock and scion on the recruitment of microorganisms. Because chimeric plants did not have a random microbiota, the null hypothesis that holobionts assemble randomly and hologenome concept is an intellectual construction only can be rejected. The study supports the relevance of hologenome as biological level of organization and opens new avenues for a better fundamental understanding of plants as holobionts.

Abstract: International audience; Cliff-top boulder deposits (CBDs) are morphological indicators of high-energy conditions. Since 2014, a monitoring of CBDs dynamics has been undertaken on the south-western coast of Iceland (Reykjanes Peninsula) to monitor their long-term activation (quarrying, transport and deposition) as a proxy of the inter-annual winter storminess variations and basaltic cliff erosion processes in a context of rocky coast progradation. Annual topomorphological surveys of four study sites were conducted and Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry was performed to quantify CBDs displacements. Hydrodynamic conditions were analyzed based on offshore waves and water level. Results show that CBDs activation occurs every winter, regardless of the variability of hydrodynamic conditions. Depending on the site and the year, more than 2% and 17% of the CBDs accumulated above 8 m to 10 m asl at the top of the cliffs are regularly mobilized. While inland movements represent the main mode of transport of blocks (between 50% to 60%), seaward and longshore movements are also well represented (10% to 20%). Longshore displacement is favored by the wide tabular morpho-structural setting of the wave-scour cliff-top platforms, which is explained by the structure of pāhoehoe lava flows. The activation of CBDs –measured from the volumes of displaced boulders–, shows a good correspondence with the frequency and duration of storms. However, as was the case during the winter of 2018-2019, it was rather the intensity of two highly morphogenic episodes combining storm waves and especially very high spring tide water levels, that generated the largest boulders displacements. Substantial interannual activation of the CBDs confirms that they constitute an important and still understudied proxy of the morphogenic system of high-energy rocky coasts, whose the dynamic in terms of carrying, transport, and deposition, could significantly increase with rising sea level.

Abstract: International audience; To assess the influence of growing salt structures on facies distribution, stratal pattern, and thickness trends, this paper provides the tectonostratigraphic framework of the outstandingly exposed Cotiella minibasins (South-Central Pyrenees, Spain). Based on detailed analysis of field cross-sections, our results showcase the syn-halokinetic upper Coniacian-lower Santonian Cotiella minibasins infill (1.5–3 km thick) records four shallow-marine depositional sequences, made of mixed siliciclastic-carbonate stratigraphic sequences. This infill is subdivided in three tectonostratigraphic units, identified by using large and small-scale halokinetic structures (i.e. wedges, megaflaps) and variations in facies associations, thicknesses, stratal patterns from the salt wall flanks to the central part of the minibasins. The first unit records the onset of salt movement with overlying laterally continuous sheet-like sedimentary layers and progressive facies transitions over distances of kms. The influence of halokinesis on sedimentation patterns was minor, and only impacted thickness trends and depocenters localization. The second unit records salt evacuation at the surface with the presence of salt-wall derived detritus, the rapid downbuilding and a increase of sand-rich facies proportions. The stratal pattern is characterized by sheet like layers, laterally discontinuous over distances of 300–600 m downdip to the salt wall. Topographically elevated salt walls likely amplified tidal currents, implying sand-rich facies accumulation along the salt wall margin. The halokinesis influence on sedimentation, thickness trends and depocenter localization was significant. The third unit records the end of the salt evacuation stage, marking a brutal decrease of sand-rich facies, likely controlled by regional controls such as eustacy and tectonics. The influence of halokinesis on sedimentation patterns, thickness trends, large-scale geometries and depocenter localization was significant. Our work indicates that distinguishing these large-scale tectonostratigraphic units and their characteristics is of prime importance to understand the archetypal facies distribution, thickness and stratal patterns along salt structures margins.

Abstract: International audience; The diversity of praeaulacid wasps in Kachin amber is relatively poorly documented. Here, a new genus and species of praeaulacid wasp are described and illustrated from the mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber as Archeogastrinus kachinensis gen. et sp. nov., and placed in the subfamily Praeaulacinae. This new genus is distinguishable from the other Praeaulacidae because of its particular tibial spurs formula 1-2-2; its forewings with a long and thin pterostigma, a 1-M longer than 1-Rs, a 1-Rs longer than its distance to pterostigma, a crossvein 2r-rs aligned (or nearly) with 2rs-m and originating near the middle of pterostigma, a 2rs-m present, a cell 3rm long, a 1cu-a postfurcal to 1-M, a vein 2-M distinct; its hind wings cu-a reaching Cu distad M + Cu fork; and its metasoma with a first segment petiole-like (i.e., long and thin) and ventrally inflated in its distal half. The position of the genus Mesevania is briefly discussed, as well as the validity of the genus Paleosyncrasis, both described from the mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber.; La diversité des guêpes praeaulacides dans l’ambre du Kachin est mal documentée. Ici, un nouveau genre et une nouvelle espèce de guêpe praeaulacide sont décrits de l’ambre du Crétacé moyen de Kachin et nommée Archeogastrinus kachinensis gen. et sp. nov. Ce nouveau taxon est placé dans la sous-famille des Praeaulacinae et se différencie des autres Praeaulacidae grâce à sa formule d’épines tibiales particulière 1-2-2 ; son aile antérieure avec un ptérostigma long et fin, une 1-M plus longue que 1-Rs, une 1-Rs plus longue que la distance qui la sépare du ptérostigma, une veine transversale 2r-rs alignée (ou presque) avec 2rs-m et commençant proche du milieu du ptérostigma, une 2rs-m présente, une cellule 3rm longue, une 1cu-a distale à la fourche de M + Cu ; et un metasoma avec un premier segment ressemblant à un pétiole (c.a.d. long et fin) et gonflé ventralement dans sa moitié distale. La position du genre Mesevania est rapidement discutée, ainsi que la validité du genre Paleosyncrasis, tous deux décrits de l’ambre du Crétacé moyen du Kachin.

Abstract: International audience; Mass development of macrophytes is an increasing problem in many aquatic systems worldwide. Dense mats of macrophytes can negatively affect activities like boating, fishing, or hydropower production and one of the management measures often applied is mechanical removal. In this study, we analyzed the effect of mechanical macrophyte removal on phytoplankton, zooplankton, and macroinvertebrate (pelagic and benthic samples) assemblages. Our study covered five sites in four countries in Europe and Africa with highly variable characteristics. In all sites, dense mats of different macrophyte species (Juncus bulbosus in a river in Norway; a mix of native macrophytes in a German river, Elodea nuttallii in a lake in Germany, Ludwigia spp. in a French lake and Pontederia crassipes in a South African lake) are problematic and mechanical removal was applied. In every country, we repeated the same BACI (Before-After-Control-Impact) design, including "before", "one week after", and "six weeks after" sampling in a control and an impact section. Repeating the same experimental design at all sites allowed us to disentangle common effects across all sites from site-specific effects. For each taxonomic group, we analyzed three structural and three functional parameters, which we combined in a scoring system. Overall, the removal of macrophytes negatively affected biodiversity, in particular, of zooplankton and macroinvertebrate assemblages. In contrast, plant removal had positive effects on the phytoplankton assemblages. Effects were more pronounced one week after removal than six weeks after. Consequently, we suggest a stronger consideration of the effect of plant removal on biodiversity to arrive at more sustainable management practices in the future.

Abstract: International audience; Ashdown Brickworks, near Bexhill, East Sussex, has produced a large number of vertebrate fossils from the Wadhurst Clay Formation, part of the Wealden Supergroup (Hastings Group; Valanginian; Lower Cretaceous). Here we describe the microvertebrate fauna of the ‘conglomerate bed’, representing a rich sample of taxa. While most of the recovered teeth and bones are abraded, some heavily, most can be identified to species level. The taxa include four species of hybodont sharks (Egertonodus basanus, Planohybodus ensis, Polyacrodus parvidens, P. brevicostatus), three taxa of bony fishes (an unidentified Lepidotes-like semionotiform, the pycnodontiform Ocloedus, and an albuliform), three taxa of crocodyliforms (the goniopholid Hulkepholis, a bernissartiid, and the atoposaurid Theriosuchus), and the theropod dinosaurs Baryonyx and an allosauroid. Sediments of the Wadhurst Clay Formation as a whole indicate freshwater to very slightly brackish-water environments of deposition, and the mainly aquatic time-averaged mixture of fishes and tetrapods recovered from the ‘conglomerate bed’, together with isolated terrestrial species, confirms this interpretation.

Abstract: International audience; The stratigraphical complex preserved at the site of Menez–Dregan I (Brittany, France) displays an alternating sequence of 17 occupation levels and of 4 marine deposits, between ca. 450 and 150,000 years (stratigraphical units 9a and 3b). The lithic industry retrieved at the site is extremely abundant, with more than 153,000 artefacts over 3 cm in length, as well as millions of knapping debris, and corresponds to a regional facies of the Acheulean, with heavy-duty tools essentially represented by choppers, as well as a few handaxes and cleavers. This paper presents a first synthesis of the data produced for almost 30 years on the site of Menez–Dregan I. The typological study of the entire lithic collection is now complete and allows us to assess the different human occupations that occurred at this site during the Lower Palaeolithic.; Le complexe stratigraphique conservé à Menez-Dregan I (Bretagne, France) présente une alternance de 17 niveaux d’occupation et de 4 dépôts marins, entre environ 450 et 300 000 ans (US 9a et 3b). L’industrie lithique retrouvée sur le site est extrêmement riche (plus de 153 000 artefacts supérieurs à 3 cm de longueur, ainsi que des millions de débris de taille), et correspond à un faciès régional de l’Acheuléen, dont le macro-outillage est essentiellement représenté par des choppers, ainsi que par quelques bifaces et hachereaux. Cet article présente une première synthèse des données produites depuis presque 30 ans sur le site de Menez-Dregan I. L’étude typologique de l’ensemble de la collection lithique est à présent achevée, et permet de faire le point sur les différentes occupations humaines qui se sont succédé sur ce site au cours du Paléolithique inférieur.

Abstract: International audience; There has recently been renewed interest in understanding the physics of foam flow in permeable media. As for Newtonian flows in fractures, the heterogeneity of local apertures in natural fractures is expected to strongly impact the spatial distribution of foam flow. Although several experimental studies have been previously performed to study foam flow in fractured media, none of them has specifically addressed that impact for parallel flow in a realistic fracture geometry and its consequences for the foam’s in situ shear viscosity and bubble morphologies. To do so, a comprehensive series of single-phase experiments have been performed by injecting pre-generated foams with six different qualities at a constant flow rate through a replica of a Vosges sandstone fracture of well-characterized aperture map. These measurements were compared to measurements obtained in a Hele-Shaw (i.e., smooth) fracture of identical hydraulic aperture. The results show that fracture wall roughness strongly increases the foam’s apparent viscosity and shear rate. Moreover, foam bubbles traveling in regions of larger aperture exhibit larger velocity, size, a higher coarsening rate, and are subjected to a higher shear rate. This study also presents the first in situ measurement of foam bubbles velocities in fracture geometry, and provides hints towards measuring the in situ rheology of foam in a rough fracture from the velocity maps, for various imposed mean flow rates. These findings echo the necessity of considering fracture wall when predicting the pressure drop through the fracture and the effective viscosity, as well as in situ rheology, of the foam.

Abstract: International audience; The generation of ductile shear zones is essential for the formation of tectonic plate boundaries, such as subduction or strike-slip zones. However, the primary mechanism of ductile strain localization is still contentious. We study here the spontaneous generation of ductile shear zones by thermal softening using thermo-mechanical numerical simulations for linear and power-law viscous flow in one-dimension (1D), 2D and 3D. All models are velocity-driven. The 1D model exhibits bulk simple shear whereas the 2D and 3D models exhibit bulk pure shear. The initial conditions include a small temperature perturbation in otherwise homogeneous material. We use a series of 1D simulations to determine a new analytical formula which predicts the temperature evolution inside the shear zone. This temperature prediction requires knowledge of only the boundary velocity, flow law and thermal parameters, but no a priori information about the shear zone itself, such as thickness, stress and strain rate. The prediction is valid for 1D, 2D and 3D shear zones in bulk pure and simple shear. The results show that shear heating dominates over conductive cooling if the relative temperature increase is >50 °C. The temperature variation induced by the shear zone is nearly one order of magnitude wider than the corresponding finite strain variation so that no significant temperature variation occurs between shear zone and wall rock. Applying typical flow laws for lithospheric rocks shows that shear zone generation by thermal softening occurs for typical plate tectonic velocities of few cm.yr−1 or strain rates between and s−1. Shear stresses larger than 200 MPa can already cause strain localization. The results indicate that thermal softening is a feasible mechanism for spontaneous ductile shear zone generation in the lithosphere and may be one of the primary mechanisms of lithospheric strain localization.

Abstract: Background Collision avoidance between two walkers involves a mutual adaptation to speed and orientation in order to successfully avoid a collision. Minimum Predicted Distance (MPD) is the distance at which two walkers would collide if their speed and path trajectory were maintained at first sight of one another. MPD has been used to describe the risk of collision and its evolution over time between two adult walkers when on a collision course. Middle-aged children have been shown to have poor perception-action coupling during static and dynamic collision avoidance tasks. Research has yet to examine whether perception-action coupling deficits persist in a dynamic collision avoidance task involving a child and another walker. Research question Can the metric MPD(t) be used to examine collision avoidance strategies between children and adults? Methods Eighteen children (age: 10 ± 1.5 years) and eighteen adults (34 ± 9.6 years) walked along a 12.6 m pathway while avoiding another participant (child or adult). Groups of three children and three adults were recruited per session. Trials were randomized equally such that each adult interacted with another adult 20 times, each child interacted with another child 20 times, and each adult interacted with a child 21 times, for a total of 141 trials. 3D kinematic data of each participant’s head was recorded using the Vicon system. Results The results demonstrated: (1) MPD(t) can be used to predict future collisions in children, (2) MPD(t) is an absolute measure that is consistently lower when a child is involved compared to two adult walkers, (3) the individual passing second, even when it is a child, contributes more to MPD(t) than the walker passing first. Significance It appears children have developed adult-like strategies during a collision avoidance task involving two walkers. Body anthropometrics should be considered when determining collision avoidance strategies between children and adults.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between maximum power and bone variables in a group of young adults. Two hundred and one young adults (53 men and 148 women) whose ages range from 18 to 35 years voluntarily participated in this study. Weight and height were measured, and body mass index was calculated. Body composition, bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) were determined for each individual by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Vertical jump was evaluated using a validated field test (Sargent test). The highest vertical jump was selected. Maximum power (P max, in watts) of the lower limbs was calculated accordingly. In young men, maximum power was positively correlated to whole body (WB) BMC (r = 0.65; p < 0.001), WB BMD (r = 0.41; p < 0.01), L1-L4 BMC (r = 0.54; p < 0.001), total hip (TH) BMC (r = 0.50; p < 0.001), femoral neck (FN) BMC (r = 0.35; p < 0.01), FN cross-sectional area (CSA) (r = 0.33; p < 0.05) and FN cross-sectional moment of inertia (CSMI) (r = 0.50; p < 0.001). In young women, maximum power was positively correlated to WB BMC (r = 0.48; p < 0.001), WB BMD (r = 0.28; p < 0.001), L1-L4 BMC (r = 0.34; p < 0.001), TH BMC (r = 0.43; p < 0.001), TH BMD (r = 0.21; p < 0.01), FN BMC (r = 0.42; p < 0.001), FN BMD (r = 0.31; p < 0.001), FN CSA (r = 0.41; p < 0.001), FN CSMI (r = 0.40; p < 0.001) and FN Z (r = 0.41; p < 0.01). The current study suggests that maximum power is a positive determinant of WB BMC, WB BMD, FN CSA, and FN CSMI in young men. It also shows that maximum power is a positive determinant of WB BMC, WB BMD, TH BMD, FN BMD, FN CSA, FN CSMI, and FN Z in young women.

In order to evaluate this ability, nanoplastics were produced from microplastics collected on a beach exposed to the North Atlantic Gyre. The nanoplastics were characterized using multi-dimensional methods: asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation and dynamic light scattering coupled to several detectors. Lead (II) adsorption kinetics, isotherm and pH-edge were then carried out. The sorption reached a steady state after around 200 min. The maximum sorption capacity varied between 97% and 78.5% for both tested Pb concentrations. Lead (II) adsorption kinetics is controlled by chemical reactions with the nanoplastics surface and to a lesser extent by intraparticle diffusion. Adsorption isotherm modeling using Freundlich model demonstrated that NPG are strong adsorbents equivalent to hydrous ferric oxides such as ferrihydrite (log against 11.76 for NPG and ferrihydrite, respectively). The adsorption is dependent upon pH, in response to the Pb(II) adsorption by the oxygenated binding sites developed on account of the surface UV oxidation under environmental conditions. They could be able to compete with Fe or humic colloids for Pb binding regards to their amount and specific areas. Nanoplastics could therefore be efficient vectors of Pb and probably of many other metals as well in the environment.
