Aim To analyze the role of interferon-β or glatiramer acetate in reducing the inflammatory episodes of intra-ocular inflammation in multiple sclerosis-associated uveitis. Method A study was conducted on a non-randomized, retrospective case series of 13 patients with proven multiple sclerosis and uveitis (minimum follow-up, 12 months). All patients were given immunomodulatory treatment (interferon-β or glatiramer acetate) to control the course of the multiple sclerosis. Patients were compared to themselves before initiating the treatment, in order to assess the difference in uveitis episodes. The main outcome measurements were the number of uveitis episodes with/without immunomodulatory treatment. Results Uveitis was bilateral in 10 (77%) out of 13 patients. Intermediate uveitis was observed in 11 patients, retinal vasculitis in 3 patients, and one patient was classified as a posterior uveitis. The patients had a mean of 4.15 ± 3.1 episodes of uveitis (range 1–10) during the follow-up period (148.6 ± 84.3 months). When compared to their pre-treatment status, patients on treatment with interferon-β or glatiramer acetate showed a significant decrease of 0.36 episodes of ocular inflammation per year ( p = 0.02). Mild side effects related to immunomodulatory treatment were observed in 6 (46%) patients, 3 (23%) patients with a flu-like syndrome, and 3 (23%) patients with a skin rash. Conclusions Interferon β or glatiramer acetate could be effective in reducing the uveitis episodes in patients with multiple sclerosis-associated uveitis, and was well tolerated in most patients.

Background Prostate specific antigen (PSA) detection in blood is widely used to screen for prostate cancer (PCa). However, PSA has limited utility in discriminating high risk tumors (Gleason score≥7) from indolent-low risk tumors, which leads to unnecessary biopsies and highlights the need to identify better biomarkers for the detection of clinically significant PCa. GATA2 is a pioneer transcription factors which expression is increased in high-risk prostate cancer (PCa), but its utility in discriminating for PCa remains untested. Methods To determine whether extracellular vesicle (EV) GATA2 mRNA provides clinically relevant information to distinguish PCa, we prospectively analyzed non-digital rectal exam (DRE) urine EV GATA2 mRNA levels from 165 males with suspicion of PCa prior to biopsy and correlated GATA2 levels alone and combined in a multigene (PCA3 and TMPRSS2) EV mRNA assay to biopsy result. Results Prostate origin of GATA2 mRNA detected in urine EVs was confirmed by observing that GATA2 mRNA levels significantly dropped after prostatectomy (p Conclusions Non-DRE urine EV GATA2 mRNA alone and in combination with other urine EV biomarkers in men with suspicion of PCa provides useful information to distinguish any cancer and high-risk PCa and may reduce the number of biopsies. The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to ultra-high energy neutrinos in the cosmic radiation. Neutrinos can interact in the atmosphere close to ground (down-going) and, for tau neutrinos, through the Earth-skimming mechanism (up-going) where a tau lepton is produced in the Earth crust that can emerge and decay in the atmosphere. Both types of neutrino-induced events produce an inclined particle air shower that can be identified by the presence of a broad time structure of signals in the water-Cherenkov detectors. We discuss the neutrino identification criteria used and present the corresponding limits on the diffuse and point-like source fluxes.

Zooarchaeological research carried out on South-American ostrich eggshells from late pre-Hispanic site Arroyo Talainin 2 (ca. 1100–300 BP, Sierras of Cordoba, Argentina) is presented in this paper. The resource importance has been assessed focusing mainly on its economic and political dimensions for social-unit integration rather than its classical use as a seasonal indicator. Eggshells taxonomic identification was performed by quantifying shell-pore density, and determining two Rheidae species: greater rhea ( Rhea americana ) and lesser rhea ( Rhea pennata ). High frequencies of burned eggshell fragments indicate an unequivocal association between this resource and the human occupations recorded at this site. Regional-scale data suggests that egg consumption took place disassociated from the main-residential camps. These locations were rock-shelters occupied by small-dispersed household groups or large-group food processing and consumption sites such as Arroyo Talainin 2. Thus, a flexible approach for a food-consumption study is required to account for its spatial dimension. Only a regional-scale archaeological research will allow advances to be made in our understanding of the subsistence patterns and socio-political organization of late pre-Hispanic human societies.

Chemical interaction between carbon and titanium dissolved in liquid tin was studied at temperatures higher than 1000°C. The phase equilibria in the ternary system graphite–titanium–tin were investigated by thermal analysis, metallography, X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. The isothermal section at 1200°C is proposed. At this temperature, carbon can react to yield a binary phase, TiC, or a ternary phase, Ti 2 SnC. The structure of Ti 2 SnC is proposed on the basis of powder diffraction X-ray data (space group: P6 3 /m.m.c.; hexagonal axes a =0.31626 nm, c =1.36789 nm). Some experiments realized by immersion of T300 fibres in Sn–Ti alloys show that the chemical reaction leads to either a single layer of TiC or a double-layer, TiC–Ti 2 SnC. The results demonstrate that the ternary phase is not stable in liquid aluminium.

Niemann-Pick disease is a sphingomyelin lipidosis, in which sphingomyelinase deficiency leads to accumulation of sphingomyelin in the mononuclear phagocyte system [ 11. Several forms of this disease have been described. In contrast with type A Niemann-Pick disease, type B is a relatively mild disorder with hepatosplenomegaly and, sometimes, pulmonary infiltrates. Liver, spleen, bone marrow and lymph nodes are diffusely infiltrated by microvacuolated histiocytes, which stain ‘sea-blue’ by May-Griinwald-Giemsa [2]. Diagnosis should be confirmed by enzyme assay in cultured tibroblasts. These patients usually undergo abdominal sonoraphy, as a part of the clinical evaluation of patients with enlarged spleen. As in other storage diseases, some sonographic features may be rather characteristic, although differential diagnosis should be made with many other splenic lesions. We report the ultrasonographic findings of a patient affected by Niemann-Pick type B disease, pointing out the differential diagnosis with other focal splenic lesions.

We describe a new method of identifying night-time clouds over the Pierre Auger Observatory using infrared data from the Imager instruments on the GOES-12 and GOES-13 satellites. We compare cloud. identifications resulting from our method to those obtained by the Central Laser Facility of the Auger Observatory. Using our new method we can now develop cloud probability maps for the 3000 km(2) of the Pierre Auger Observatory twice per hour with a spatial resolution of similar to 2.4 km by similar to 5.5 km.
