Abstract

This paper focuses on the critical role of business-to-business (B2B) high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs) dynamic capabilities and strategic agility during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the exploratory case studies of 5 Finnish high-tech SMEs, we find that the case SMEs enacted different processes and utilized resources and capabilities creatively to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and leverage it as an opportunity. Findings indicate that agile adaptation and new opportunity utilization were the primary means of dealing with the disruptions the COVID-19 pandemic brought about. These findings indicate effective utilization of sensing and seizing capabilities and engagement with opportunity recognition and discovery to capture opportunities and deal with the impact of the pandemic on their businesses. The results further suggest that the outbreak of COVID-19 triggered a fight-or-flight survival instinct among B2B SMEs due to unprecedented levels of market uncertainty. As such, the sensing capability of B2B SMEs allowed them to identify the market threats and opportunities and understand the prevailing market situation. Accordingly, B2B SMEs seized the identified threats and opportunities by reconfiguring their business models and face-to-face and online operations. The digital technologies facilitated the online presence and promoted communication with existing and new customers. Interesting implications emerge from these findings.

26. Reimagining global food value chains through effective resilience to COVID-19 shocks and similar future events: A dynamic capability perspective

Abstract

The restructuring of global value/supply chains gained increasing attention as the unprecedented COVID-19 echoed around the world. Yet, the COVID-19 related theory-driven, large scale quantitative, and empirical studies are relatively scarce. This study advances the extant literature by empirically investigating how do firms in the global food value chains (GFVCs) re-imagine their businesses structure in response to the COVID-19—becoming more resilient and competitive to the current pandemic and similar future events. We leverage a unique data of 231 senior managers of the Australian GFVCs and examine their firms’ response strategies. Drawing upon key insights from the dynamic capability view, we find that GFVCs’ competitiveness is achieved when exposure to COVID-19 shocks elicits dynamic capabilities—readiness, response, recovery—and these capabilities work jointly and sequentially to cultivate resilience. A key finding of this study is that firms with domestic plus global value chain partners are more resilient than those having only global business partners. This finding implies that excessive reliance on offshoring sometimes becomes lethal, especially amid unexpected and prolonged global shocks and, therefore, companies should strike a balance between domestic and global business partners to remain competitive. These findings offer important contributions to theory, practice, and UN sustainable development goals.

Abstract

Introduction Among metabolic disorders, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is specified as hyperglycemia caused by glucose or carbohydrate intolerance defects. GDM is distinguished by oxidative stress, and has been connected to mitochondrial dysfunction. Previous studies have documented the relation between A12026G, A8344G and A3243G mutations in ND4, tRNALeu(UUR), and tRNALys genes in different modes of diabetes. Aim The purpose of this study was to investigate into the relationship between GDM women and common mitochondrial mutations including A12026, A8344G, and A3243G in Saudi women. Methods In this case-control study, we have opted 96 GDM and 102 non-GDM pregnant women and DNA was extracted using EDTA blood and based on specific primers, Polymerase Chain Reaction was followed and then Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was performed. Restriction enzymes was cross-checked with Lambda DNA and 10% of the purified PCR products were performed the Sanger sequencing analysis to reconfirm the RFLP analysis of the studied results. Results None of the heterozygous and homozygous mutations were not observed in our study. All the subjects were turned to be homozygous normal genotypes. Conclusion This study confirms that A12026, A8344G, and A3243G mutations have no role in the Saudi women with GDM.

Abstract

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the common genetic and clinical risk factors associated with cardiovascular and multifactorial disorder. ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) gene plays an important role in lipid metabolism and in multiple studies associated with CAD. However, more studies are needed to identify the exact role of single nucleotide polymorphisms which may cause CAD. Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the genetic association of polymorphism g.1051G > A in the ABCA1 gene with CAD patients in the Saudi population. Methods: We included 315 confirmed CAD cases, and 205 non-CAD or control subjects in this case-control study. DNA isolation was carried out for all registered participants and the polymorphism g.1051G > A was genotyped with Polymerase Chain Reaction followed by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism analysis with EcoNI restriction enzyme. Results: Modifiable risk factors such as Body Mass Index, smoking and diabetes were strongly associated and non-modifiable risk factors such as hypertension (Systolic Blood Pressure and Diastolic Blood Pressure) and serum analysis such as Fasting Blood Glucose, Total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG) and LDL-c were significantly associated in CAD cases (p A polymorphism. Conclusion: The polymorphism g.1051G > A in the gene ABCA1 is closely associated with the existence of the CAD subjects. This polymorphism could also affect the serum levels of the lipid profile, suggesting a possible occurrence of CAD in the Saudi population.

Abstract

Cellulose, the most abundant feedstock of chemicals and energy is extracted from various agro-industrial wastes, such as sugarcane bagasse (SB). Pretreatment of SB with ionic liquids improves extraction of cellulose, yet the use of ionic liquid is hindered by its high cost. In this study, cellulose was extracted from SB pretreated with methyltrioctylammonium chloride under relatively mild conditions. The extracted cellulose from pretreated SB (PTB) and untreated SB (UTB) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and FTIR. Fermentation of cellulose extracted from PTB by a thermophilic bacterium, Bacillus aestuarii UE25, yielded 245.16% higher titers of cellulase than cellulose extracted from UTB. The recyclability of the IL was assessed to make the pretreatment process cost effective and was monitored through TLC and FTIR. The results of this research demonstrated the potential of ionic liquid pretreated SB for cellulose extraction and for its subsequent utilization in thermostable cellulase production.

Abstract

Fermentation of carbohydrates present in lignocellulosic (LC) biomass is facilitated by lignin removal, which is usually achieved by adopting various pretreatment methods to provide the enzymes proper access to their respective substrates. Pretreatment using ionic liquid (IL) is relatively recent advancement and considered as mild and green process. ILs can dissolve extensive quantities of biomass and depolymerize the cellulose. In this context, an abundantly available LC biomass, sugarcane bagasse (SB), was pretreated using alkali or with an IL, methyltrioctylammonium chloride, and was used for cellulase production from thermophilic bacteria. In all, 26 indigenously isolated thermophilic bacterial strains were quantitatively screened for cellulase production. 16S rDNA sequences of the promising isolates UE10 and UE27 revealed relatedness with Brevibacillus borstelensis, while the strain UE1 belonged to Aneurinibacillus thermoaerophilus. Cellulase production was compared by utilizing alkali pretreated and IL pretreated SB and the later was found more appropriate. UE1, UE10 and UE27 yielded 22.2, 22.18 and 33.3 IU mL-1 of endoglucanase, respectively, by fermenting IL pretreated SB. The changes in SB structure after pretreatment were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. This study demonstrated the potential of novel thermophilic bacterial strains to utilize IL pretreated SB for production of industrially important enzyme, cellulase.

Abstract

Quantum mechanics (QM) approaches (DFT, MP2, CCSD(T), etc.) play an important role in calculating molecules and crystals with a high accuracy and acceptable efficiency. In recent years, with the development of artificial intelligence technology, machine learning (ML) has played an increasingly essential role in accelerating the QM calculations and predictions of molecular crystals, as well as the discovery of novel materials. This review provides state-of-the-art information and prospects for QM theories, fragment-based methods and ML methods, as well as their up-to-date applications in predicting small inorganic molecules, large drug molecules and relevant molecular crystals. The discussed applications include ML potential energy surface (PES) construction, crystal structure prediction (CSP), chemical reaction prediction and predictions of a series of properties, such as structure, energy, atomic force, bond length, chemical shift, superconductivity, super-hardness, vibrational spectra, phase transition and diagram. This work also reviews software and packages built recently based on ML methods for property predictions and PES constructions in the field of physics and chemistry. For the three discussed methods, the most time-consuming one is the high-level all-atom QM method, which is capable of describing electronic structures with high accuracy and thus predicts properties that are consistent with the experimental results. The second one, fragment-based QM method, requires less computational time than all-atom QM, which can accelerate all-atom QM calculations for large systems by dividing the entire system into subsystems, presenting a considerable efficiency increase. The computational complexities for fragment-based QM and all-atom QM are N - N 2 and N 5 - N 7 (N is the size of the system), respectively. A well-trained ML model can make the above predictions within seconds while ensuring a high prediction accuracy, where its prediction cost and accuracy are determined by the training data and the training process. Therefore, it is challenging for ML applications in physics and chemistry to generate highly accurate and powerful ML models while ensuring sufficient datasets. This work not only provides an overview of the recent progress in QM theories, fragment-based methods, ML methods and several ML-based software programs and applications on small inorganic molecules, large drug molecules and relevant crystals, but also shed light on ML methods in accelerating QM prediction, optimization and novel crystal material design.

Abstract

The current study aimed to synthesize and characterize the Duranta erecta leaves extract-based iron oxide nanoparticles (D-Fe3O4-NPs) and chitosan biopolymer-based nanocomposites (D-Fe3O4-NC). The synthesized D-Fe3O4-NC was applied for the adsorptive removal of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) from water. The nanostructure, porous, rough, crystalline structure, and different functional groups of chitosan and D-Fe3O4-NPs in D-Fe3O4-NC showed that the D-Fe3O4-NC is feasible for suitable adsorbents for quantitative removal of Cd, Cr, and Pb. Based on the batch experiments, the influences of pH, adsorption time, contents of Cd, Cr, and Pb in solution, and temperature were successfully optimized. The adsorption capacities of D-Fe3O4-NC for Cd, Cr, and Pb were observed at 74.4, 76.0, and 75.2 mg g−1, respectively. The adsorption isotherms fitted the Freundlich Model equation well, and the adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second-order kinetics for the adsorption of these toxic metals. D-Fe3O4-NC showed an excellent recyclable efficiency up to multiple analyses (n = 20). The D-Fe3O4-NC was an excellent adsorbent for removing toxic metals from municipal and hand pump water samples (% removal >93%). Therefore, the proposed D-Fe3O4-NC is the most efficient and selective adsorbent for removing Cd, Cr, and Pb from drinking water up to recommended permissible limit. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
