Advancements in technology have led to the use of smartphones as biosensor detectors. However, it is difficult to obtain stable color information of colorimetric sensors using multiple smartphones owing to different light conditions and image correction operations. In this study, we attempted color detection of the colorimetric paper chip using smartphone-embedded light-emitting diode (LED) and simple transformation calculation. This method enables the acquisition of stable color information using different smartphones by reducing the influence of external light sources. Moreover, we studied characteristics such as convergence and distinction of detection result details by the manufacturers and smartphones. These findings suggested the necessity of classification criteria for the use of smartphones to achieve optimal detection. In addition, white and black references were used to set the standard for color correction of various light sources. Based on our results, we conclude that this approach presents the possibility of smartphone-based colorimetric detection in practical applications.

Paper prototypes have been successful for gathering concrete, grounded user feedback. Most of these prototypes are used to elicit feedback during bounded design sessions. However, for systems that support new social practices these bounded sessions do not fully materialize the interactions the prototype supports. This paper presents a case study of a six-month paper prototype deployment that materialized collaborative interactions in care retirement community. Throughout this deployment the prototype was situated within the lives of participants, where they shaped the interactions and usage of the prototype over time. As these interactions materialized, the evoked community practice was unlike what participants envisioned during our first, more traditional paper prototyping and design sessions. This article shows how our interactive, paper prototype provided critical guidance in how realistic our imagined practice would be.

Thermal papers, commonly used for printed receipts or lottery tickets, are omnipresent in our everyday life. They are regarded as semi-porous substrates, and yet can be critical to analyze when looking for latent fingermarks due to their thermosensibility. The aim of this study was to investigate a development sequence that would better combine the adequate detection techniques in order to maximize the chances to develop latent fingermarks left on these substrates. Different methods of development have been compared on test substrates: black magnetic powder, Lumicyano™, thermal development, ninhydrin and 1,2-indanedione/ZnCl2. Whitening stages and thermal development have been focused on, tested and optimized. The results of these preliminary tests enabled the study of three development sequences. They have subsequently been compared to the one currently used in the Gendarmerie's laboratories and the best results have been provided during pseudo-operational comparative trials by one of these sequences, consisting in 6 stages.

This study explored the relationship between syntactic complexity and rhetorical functions and the relationship between syntactic complexity and level of move/step realization in learner-generated research paper introductions. We created a corpus of 79 introductions written by undergraduate L2 students at intermediate to high-intermediate levels. We annotated the introductions for moves and steps, measured their syntactic complexity at the global, clausal, and phrasal levels, and rated their level of move/step realization across four levels (no, low, intermediate, and high). We conducted one-way MANOVA, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple linear regression analyses. We found sentences realizing Reviewing items of previous research function to be significantly longer than other steps in Move1 and to contain significantly more clausal and phrasal complexity features. Sentences performing Claiming centrality function also demonstrated significantly more phrasal complexity features as measured by complex nominals per clause. We also found a higher level of phrasal complexity in introductions with a higher level of move/step realization, which can be attributed to introductions including Step1 and Step3, rather than containing all steps. Our findings imply that there is value in developing explicit instructions on how to use complex structures in performing rhetorical steps in research paper introductions. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Purpose Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most essential tools for detecting heart problems. Till today most of the ECG records are available in paper form. It can be challenging and time-consuming to manually assess the ECG paper records. Hence, automated diagnosis and analysis are possible if we digitize such paper ECG records. Methods The proposed work aims to convert ECG paper records into a 1-D signal and generate an accurate diagnosis of heart-related problems using deep learning. Camera-captured ECG images or scanned ECG paper records are used for the proposed work. Effective pre-processing techniques are used for the removal of shadow from the images. A deep learning model is used to get a threshold value that separates ECG signal from its background and after applying various image processing techniques threshold ECG image gets converted into digital ECG. These digitized 1-D ECG signals are then passed to another deep learning model for the automated diagnosis of heart diseases into different classes such as ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), Left Bundle Branch Block (LBBB), Right Bundle Branch Block (RBBB), and T-wave abnormality. Results The accuracy of deep learning-based binarization is 97%. Further deep learning-based diagnosis approach of such digitized paper ECG records was having an accuracy of 94.4%. Conclusions The digitized ECG signals can be useful to various research organizations because the trends in heart problems can be determined and diagnosed from preserved paper ECG records. This approach can be easily implemented in areas where such expertise is not available. Summary Skin-interfaced wearable electronics can find a broad spectrum of applications in healthcare, human-machine interface, robotics, and others. The state-of-the-art wearable electronics usually suffer from costly and complex fabrication procedures and nonbiodegradable polymer substrates. Paper, comprising entangled micro- or nano-scale cellulose fibers, is compatible with scalable fabrication techniques and emerges as a sustainable, inexpensive, disposable, and biocompatible substrate for wearable electronics. Given various attractive properties (e.g., breathability, flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability) and rich tunability of surface chemistry and porous structures, paper offers many exciting opportunities for wearable electronics. In this review, we first introduce the intriguing properties of paper-based wearable electronics and strategies for cellulose modifications to satisfy specific demands. We then overview the applications of paper-based devices in biosensing, energy storage and generation, optoelectronics, soft actuators, and several others. The main objective of this project was to assess an inkless method to collect reference (exemplar) fingerprints as a low-cost, portable, and hygienic technique; for temporary storage and as an alternative to the conventional black ink method. The tested inkless approach requires alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel as the medium and thermal paper as the substrate. The final quality and clarity of fingerprints were examined and compared between the two methods, especially on the basis of medium/substrate and biological sex effects. Two different evaluation systems of visual quality (clarity) were conducted to provide more reliable results: a quality score scheme (QS) and metrics from the FBI's Universal Latent Workstation (ULW). Fingerprints were obtained from 20 individuals (11 males and 9 females) between the ages of 20 and 40; a total of 240 impressions were evaluated. The results provide evidence that the inkless method produces identifiable fingerprints of equivalent quality to the standard ink method, although significantly better for males. The potential of the proposed technique as an alternative to the conventional ink method is proven and corroborated by the two independent systems of visual quality assessments.

Exam paper generation is an indispensable part of teaching. Existing methods focus on the use of question extraction algorithms with labels for each question provided. Obviously, manual labeling is inefficient and cannot avoid label bias. Furthermore, the quality of the exam papers generated by the existing methods is not guaranteed. To address these problems, we propose a novel approach to generating exam papers based on prediction of exam performance. As such, we update the quality of the initially generated questions one by using dynamic programming, as well as in batches by using genetic algorithms. We performed the prediction task by using Deep Knowledge Tracing. Our approach considered the skill weight, difficulty, and distribution of exam scores. By comparisons, experimental results indicate that our approach performed better than the two baselines. Furthermore, it can generate exam papers with adaptive difficulties closely to the expected levels, and the related student exam scores will be guaranteed to be relatively reasonable distribution. In addition, our approach was evaluated in a real learning scenarios and shows advantages.

We highlight key factors in designing system solutions - per specific task; as well as design issues in managing the disease on the national level. In production, poor ergonomic environments not only lead to increased workloads and health hazards for employees but also tend to reduce efficiency and quality. Recently, the human-cyber-physical (HCP) system has been proposed and widely studies to meet human capabilities and limitations. However, most existing frameworks are still not adaptive enough to integrate humans into a smart production environment due to a lack of real-time individual human factors digitalization. This research proposes an HCP workstation model for comprehensive assembly resources digitalization and autonomous interaction by CPS enabling technologies. Based on this, an adaptive control system has been developed for proactive ergonomic risk mitigation. Computer vision is deployed for real-time individual ergonomic evaluation and a prototype has been set up for functional validation.

Efficient and safe detection of Bacillus anthracis spores (BAS) is a challenging task especially in bio-terror scenarios where the agent is concealed. We provide a proof-of-concept for the identification of concealed BAS inside mail envelopes using short-wave infrared hyperspectral imaging (SWIR-HSI). The spores and two other benign materials are identified according to their typical absorption spectrum. The identification process is based on the removal of the envelope signal using a new automatic new algorithm. This method may serve as a fast screening tool prior to using classical bioanalytical techniques.

Nitrite is one of the most common carcinogens in daily food. Its simple, rapid, inexpensive, and in-field measurement is important for food safety, based on the requirements of the standard from Codex Alimentarius Commission and China. Using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and thin layer silica gel (SG), p-aminophenylcyclic acid (SA) and naphthalene ethylenediamine hydrochloride (NEH), as carriers and chromogenic agents, respectively, PAN-NSS as nitrite color sensor is proposed. After fixing and protecting of SA and NEH with layer-upon-layer PAN, the validity period of the test paper can be prolonged from 7 days to more than 30 days. The reproducibility of PAN-NSS preparation is ensured by electrospinning. Combined with PAN-NSS, deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) and APP as a visual monitoring platform, which has the functions of rapid sampling, data processing and transmission, intuitive feedback, etc., and provides a fully integrated detection system for field detection.

Citation recommendation can help researchers quickly find supplementary or alternative references in massive academic resources. Current research on citation recommendation mainly focuses on the citing papers, resulting in the enormous cited papers are ignored, including the relations among cited papers and their citation context cited in citing papers. Moreover, cited paper’s content is often denoted with its original title and abstract, which is hard to acquire and rarely considers different citation motivations. Furthermore, the most appropriate method for semantic representation of cited papers’ relations and content is uncertain. Therefore, this paper studies citation recommendation from the perspective of semantic representation of cited papers’ relations and content. Firstly, four forms of citation context are designed and extracted as cited papers’ content considering citation motivations, as well as co-citation relationships are extracted as cited papers’ relations. Secondly, 132 methods are designed for generating semantic vector of cited paper, including four network embedding methods, 16 methods by combining four text representation algorithms with four forms of citation content, and 112 fusion methods. Finally, similarity among cited papers is calculated for citation recommendation and a quantitative evaluation method based on link prediction is designed, to find the most appropriate form of citation content and the optimal method. The result shows that doc2vecC (Document to Vector through Corruption) with the form of CS&SS (Current Sentences and Surrounding Sentences) performs best, in which the AUC (Area Under Curve) and MAP (Macro Average Precision) reach 0.877 and 0.889 and have increased by 0.462 and 0.370 compared with the worst-performing method. This performance is slightly improved by parameters adjustment, and a case study is performed whose results have further proved the effectiveness of this method. In addition, among four forms of cited papers’ content, CS&SS performs best in almost all methods. Furthermore, the fusion methods not always perform better than the single methods, where doc2vecC (CS&SS) performs better than the best fusion method GCN (Graph Convolutional Network). These results not only prove the effectiveness of citation recommendation from the perspective of cited paper, but also provide helpful and useful suggestions for method selection and citation content selection. The data and conclusions can be extended to other text mining-related tasks. Simultaneously, it is a preliminary research which needs to be further studied in other domains using emerging semantic representation methods.

Successful problem solving relies on the availability of suitable mental representations of the task domain. Especially for more complex problems, there might be a wide variety of possible problem representations, and it might even be beneficial to change them during problem solving. In a first part, we argue that investigating the dynamics of understanding in terms of dynamically changing problem representations is an underexplored aspect of problem solving research, and that most classic tasks even preclude the opportunity of such dynamics to occur. Continuing this theoretical discussion, as an illustrative example of a task designed for the exploration of such representational dynamics, the second part of the paper discusses a novel, complex spatial transformation and problem solving task. In this task, one is asked to repeatedly mentally cross-fold a sheet of paper, and to predict the resulting sheet geometry without the use of external aids. Through its deliberate openness and difficulty, this task requires finding new and more efficient representations – ranging from kinaesthetic and visuospatial imagery to symbolic notions. We present an overview of the task domain and discuss various ways of representing the domain as well as potential dynamics between them.

Literature reviews are essential for any researcher trying to keep up to date with the burgeoning software engineering literature. FAST$^2$ is a novel tool for reducing the effort required for conducting literature reviews by assisting the researchers to find the next promising paper to read (among a set of unread papers). This paper describes FAST$^2$ and tests it on four large software engineering literature reviews conducted by Wahono (2015), Hall (2012), Radjenovi\'c (2013) and Kitchenham (2017). We find that FAST$^2$ is a faster and robust tool to assist researcher finding relevant SE papers which can compensate for the errors made by humans during the review process. The effectiveness of FAST$^2$ can be attributed to three key innovations: (1) a novel way of applying external domain knowledge (a simple two or three keyword search) to guide the initial selection of papers---which helps to find relevant research papers faster with less variances; (2) an estimator of the number of remaining relevant papers yet to be found---which in practical settings can be used to decide if the reviewing process needs to be terminated; (3) a novel self-correcting classification algorithm---automatically corrects itself, in cases where the researcher wrongly classifies a paper., Comment: 20+3 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, and 4 algorithms. Over the past few years, researchers have focused on stimulus-responsive soft materials and their applications in the design of soft actuators. The key factor of the soft actuators to achieve various applications is the programmable and controllable shape deformations. Here, a versatile and simple surface patterning method consisted of pencil drawing and pasting polymer films is proposed to design the soft actuators with programmable deformations. Due to the thermal expansion effect and the hygroexpansion effect, the graphite paper/polymer actuator performs a bending motion with a curvature of 1.4 cm−1 under light irradiation and 1.2 cm−1 under high humidity. Owing to the convenience of the patterning method, different patterns on both two surfaces of the paper substrate are designed without effort. Thus, through tuning the grayscale of the graphite on one surface of the paper, three types of T-shaped actuators can be obtained with different deformations under light irradiation. In addition, by pencil drawing or hydrophobically modifying specific patterns on the two surfaces of the paper, three types of strip-shaped actuators are also proposed to demonstrate that different 3D shape deformations can be obtained under different stimuli. Finally, a helix-shaped actuator inspired by the natural plant tendrils is fabricated by the thermal-induced shaping method. The helix-shaped actuator performs twisting/untwisting motion under different stimuli and can be used as a grasping robot. These results demonstrate the diversified programmability of the graphite paper/polymer actuator. Hence, the simple and versatile programming methods of soft actuators have great potential to be used in the field of biomimetic applications, intelligent robotics, and lab-on-paper devices.

The optical model for reflectance lightness of stereo paper product surface is proposed, which could promote color reproduction study of paper model products and improving color reproduction quality. The reflectance lightness was measured using non-contact measurement method with spectroradiometer, CS2000A, that can measure stereo paper product surface lightness and tristimulus. Once inputting the paper product parameters of surface angle and tone, the model will predict the reflectance lightness for stereo paper product surface. After analyzing statistical information of light transmission, paper product surface reflectance lightness can be obtained. The results showed that prediction model is versatile and easy to use, besides the model quite approached to realistic paper product surface. The optical model simulation system could sufficiently accomplish reflectance lightness, which provides a novel way to predict and reproduce printing quality.

International audience; Planning is motivated by acting. Most of the existing work on automated planning underestimates the reasoning and deliberation needed for acting; it is instead biased towards path-finding methods in a compactly specified state-transition system. Researchers in this AI field have developed many planners, but very few actors. We believe this is one of the main causes of the relatively low deployment of automated planning applications. In this paper, we advocate a change in focus to actors as the primary topic of investigation. Actors are not mere plan executors: they may use planning and other deliberation tools, before and during acting. This change in focus entails two interconnected principles: a hierarchical structure to integrate the actor's deliberation functions, and continual online planning and reasoning throughout the acting process. In the paper, we discuss open problems and research directions toward that objective in knowledge representations, model acquisition and verification, synthesis and refinement, monitoring, goal reasoning, and integration.

We used the random forest classifier to predict Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I-IV from patient reported abilities recorded on the Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire (FAQ). The classifier exhibited outstanding accuracy across GMFCS levels I-IV, with 83%-91% true positive rate (TPR), area under the receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curve greater than 0.96 for all levels, and misclassification by more than one level only occurring 1.2% of the time. This new approach to GMFCS level assignment overcomes several difficulties with the current method: (i) it is based on a broad spectrum of functional abilities, (ii) it resolves functional ability profiles that conflict with existing GMFCS level definitions, (iii) it is based entirely on self-reported abilities, and (iv) it removes complex age dependence. Further work is needed to examine inter-center differences in classifier performance-which would most likely reflect interpretive differences in GMFCS level definitions between centers.

Creatinine is a clinically significant analyte used to diagnose kidney condition. However, the literature still lacks in creatinine sensors fulfilling point-of-care testing requirements. In this paper, we have developed colorimetric paper-based creatinine sensors adhering to point-of-care testing principles. The signal readout is accomplished with a smartphone modified with 3D-printed elements and processed with a self-written application compromising computer vision algorithm for automatic detection of the colored zone. Two colorimetric methods – routinely used Jaffe method and an alternative one with 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid were both tested and compared. Hue channel intensity from HSV color space and green channel from RGB color space was used as the analytical signal in Jaffe and 3,5-dinitrobenzoate method, respectively. For both kinds of sensors the linear range of the response covered the range significant for urinary analysis, with precision, expressed as RSD, below 5%. Limit of quantification for Jaffe method was 1.05 mmol·L−1 whereas it was 0.82 mmol·L−1 for 3,5-dinitrobenzoate method. The utility of the developed sensors to selectively quantify creatinine in undiluted urine was proved using artificial urine samples and the obtained recoveries were in the range from 70 to 129 %.

The top 1000 biomedical papers by number of citations are classified by method, type of method and non-methods by examination of citation contexts. Supervised machine learning is applied to the context data for a training sample of papers which is then used to classify the full list, revealing that words indicating utility are most important for the classification of methods. Further word analysis is carried out using corpus linguistics to uncover context words that characterize non-methods. Hedging words are found to play an important role for non-methods, and several are selected for further analysis with logistic regression. Other variables in the regression are a consensus variable based on the similarity of contexts for a paper and another variable based on whether citations come from “methods” sections of citing papers. Accuracy of predictions from logistic regression is comparable to machine learning. The results are interpreted in terms of the perceived certainty or uncertainty of the underlying knowledge, that is, methods and their outputs have higher certainty, and non-methods higher uncertainty. Evidence is found that hedging is inversely related to citation frequency. Implications of this work for the study of the development of science and the role of methods and tools in biomedical research are discussed.

Paper cooperation network embodies expert topic similarity in an extent, thus, a novel method is proposed for expert topic analysis and extraction by combining paper cooperation network and topic model. In the method, we extract each paper’ author information and construct an expert cooperation network. At the same time, by means of LDA model, a probabilistic topic model is also built to analyze papers’ latent topics. Then, by making full use of the feature that adjacent nodes in the expert cooperation network share similar themes distribution, we makes a constraint on expert topic distribution in Gibbs sampling process of solving the probabilistic topic model. Experimental results on NIPS dataset show that the proposed method can effectively extract expert topics, and the expert paper cooperation network plays a very good supporting role on the extracting task.

There are a number of issues which are involved with organizing a conference. Among these issues, assigning conference-papers to reviewers is one of the most difficult tasks. Assigning conference-papers to reviewers is automatically the most crucial part. In this paper, we address this issue of paper-to-reviewer assignment, and we propose a method to model the reviewers, based on the matching degree between the reviewers and the papers by combining a preference-based approach and a topic-based approach. We explain the assignment algorithm and show the evaluation results in comparison with the Hungarian algorithm.

Tremendous academic information causes serious information overload problems while supporting scientific research. Scientific paper and citation recommendation systems have been developed to relieve this problem and work as a filter to furnish only relevant papers to researchers. Although previous studies have made comparative progress, this problem is still challenging because current paper recommendation systems rely on heterogeneous and multi-sourced features, thereby requiring a unified learning representation to cover different types and modalities of information. Additionally, the implicit influence of scholars’ previous preferences of writing and citing on his/her new manuscript has not been well considered in the previous studies. Facing the issue from these two aspects, in this paper, a heterogeneous knowledge embedding-based attentive RNN model is proposed to recommend scientific paper citations. First, the preparation of features consists of two parts: (1) building a unified learning representation of structural entities and relations for recommending paper citations; and (2) defining and constructing a bibliographic network comprising five types of entities and five relations. The bibliographic network enables learning a unified representation so that all graphical entities and relations can be vectorized using TransD. To establish textual representations, the PV-DM model is utilized to generate numeric features for the title of each paper. Second, by combining structural and textual representations focusing on the “author-text query” scenario, an attentive bidirectional RNN is constructed to recommend paper and citation based on an user’s identity with a length-limited inquiry to capture the scholars’ previous writing and citing preferences, thereby reducing recommendation error. Through the DBLP dataset, our experiment results show the feasibility and effectiveness of our method, both in terms of the number as well as the quality of the first few recommended items. In specific, compared with existing models, our model has improved MRR and NDCG by approximately 4.8% and 2.4%, respectively.

Machine learning methods are being successfully applied in various domains of human activity, including optics. Can they become a universal instrument capable of improving user aspect of photonic devices? Is their application a necessary element of such improvement? Answers to fundamental questions arising from application of machine learning methods in ultrashort-pulsed lasers are discussed. Future prospects and current fundamental limitations of such methods are analysed.

A novel system based on Bernoulli Theorem of Large Number Law and the genetic algorithms was designed and realized in this paper, which had many advantages such as self-adaptive study for difficulty coefficient of item pool and intelligent test paper construction etc. At present, the system has applied in the examination of paperless computer tests of Jinlin university of finance and economics and some satisfactory results have been also obtained.

The question of whether digitally captured signatures and conventional signatures executed with a pen on paper differ in their characteristics is of practical relevance for forensic handwriting examiners. Due to gaps in the current literature, the present research is dedicated to this issue. Eighty persons signed in three conditions: a) with a stylus on a pad, b) with an inking pen on a sticky note attached to a signature pad allowing to obtain a digital and an analogue version on paper of one and the same writing simultaneously, and c) with a pen on paper. The first step was to investigate to what extent the character shape and number of pen lifts differ between the digital and analogue representation of one and the same signature. This revealed minor differences which are due to technical characteristics of the devices used. The observed distortions are of minor practical relevance according to ratings by eight participating forensic handwriting examiners. Subsequently, signature characteristics were compared between the three different writing conditions in a casework-oriented way. Statistical multi-level models indicate significant differences between the three signature types, but minor effect sizes in most of the examined characteristics. From the point of view of the participating handwriting examiners, these factors do not fundamentally restrict the comparability between digitally captured and conventional signatures in practice. However, caution should be exercised when generalising the results, as several factors, such as the usage of different signature pads as well as signatures made with the finger instead of a stylus, could result in more important differences compared to pen and paper signatures.

For centuries, the research paper have been the main vehicle for scientific progress. From the paper, readers in the scientific community are expected to extract all the relevant information necessary to reproduce and validate the results presented by the paper's authors. However, the increased use of computer software in science makes reproducing scientific results increasingly difficult. The research paper in its current state is no longer sufficient to fully reproduce, validate, or review a paper's experimental results and conclusions. This impedes scientific progress. To remedy these concerns, we introduce PaperMâche, a new system for creating dynamic, executable research papers. The key novelty of PaperMâche is its use of virtual machines, which lets readers and reviewers easily view and interact with a paper, and reproduce key experimental results. For authors, the Paper Mâche workbench provides an easy-touse interface to build an executable paper. By transforming the static research paper into a dynamic and interactive entity, Paper Mâche brings the presentation of scientific results into the 21st century. We believe that Paper Mâche will become indispensable to the scientific process, and increase the visibility of key findings among members and non-members of the scientific community.

Academic research is crucial to the development of science and technology and is an important factor that affects national strength. When writing an academic research paper, a rhetorical structure is typically used to present the paper’s ideas, but this task is quite difficult for junior researchers. To solve this problem, some studies have adopted text mining to assist with the writing, but the existing methods still require human intervention to generate sentences. Recently, due to the increasing maturity of deep learning technology and the ability to address the problem of automatic text generation, progress has been made in this area. The highly complex deep learning operations can correctly generate sequences and find correlations between sequences. When a user provides a few keywords and key sentences, the proposed algorithm can generate an introduction section for the user. The results show that the generated introduction is more coherent, clearer, and more fluent than existing summarization methods. In addition, the method proposed in this study improves the accuracy compared with traditional text extraction methods. The manuscript produced by this study has been evaluated to show that the study can produce a comprehensive introduction compared with previous studies.

Researchers face millions of research papers on various digital libraries. Therefore, finding relevant research work that meets the preferences of a researcher is a challenging task. Hence, different paper recommendation models have been proposed to address this issue. However, these models lack in exploiting prominent information factors, namely: papers’ citations proximity, authors’ information, papers’ topical relevance, venues’ information, researchers’ preference dynamics, and labels information to produce quality recommendations. Additionally, these models encounter problems such as cold start papers and data sparsity. To overcome these problems, this paper presents a weighted probabilistic paper recommendation model termed as PR-HNE, which jointly learns researchers’ and papers’ dynamics by encoding information from six information networks into a joint latent space. Specifically, it captures papers’ citation proximity, authors’ collaboration proximity, venues’ information, labeled information, and topical relevance to generate personalized paper recommendations. Compared to state-of-the-art models, the results generated by PR-HNE over publicly available datasets prove 4% and 6% improvement in Mean Average Precision (MAP) and Mean Reciprocal Rank (MRR) metrics, respectively. Further, in the cold-start papers problem, the proposed model produced 8% better recall score than its counterparts.

Paper is an example of a valuable material that can be recycled and recovered. In this study, a two-stage stochastic revenue-maximization model is presented to determine a long-term strategy under uncertainty for a large-scale real-world paper recycling company. This network-design problem includes optimal recycling center locations and optimal flow amounts between the nodes in the multi-facility environment. The proposed model is formulated with two-stage stochastic mixed-integer and robust programming approaches. The models are solved by commercial software GAMS 21.6/CPLEX 9.0 and the results are compared. The study is followed by the analyses of the results.

This research is concerned with the detection of similar academic papers. Given a tested paper from a given corpus of 10,099 peer-reviewed scientific papers, a two-stage process was activated. During the first stage, most of the papers were filtered out using a fast filter method. In the second stage, in order to detect similar papers we applied 23 heuristic variants derived from 3 novel prototype methods using various parameter settings. The three novel prototype methods are: CT-TR Constant Number of randomized T fingerprints, compared to each one-third of R (first/middle/last) fingerprints, CT-AR: Constant Number of randomized T fingerprints, compared to all R fingerprints, and CDT-AR: Constant Number of divided randomized T fingerprints compared, to all R fingerprints. Results achieved by the new methods are superior to those of previous heuristic methods, which were approximations of the Full Fingerprint (FF) method, currently considered the best heuristic method. The order of this new methods' run-time, (n), is far more efficient than the order of the FF method run-time, (n2) (after removing short documents from the corpus).

Paper formation (the distribution and intermixing of fibres in a paper sheet), plays a central role in paper products, and is usually evaluated off-line, with a significant delay relative to the high production rates achieved in modern paper machines. In this paper, we address an approach for evaluating and monitor paper formation using images acquired with an especially designed sensor, in-line, in-situ and in real time. The methodology essentially consists of applying wavelet texture analysis to raw images, in order to compute a wavelet signature for each image, based on which their discrimination, according to the formation quality level, can be made. A PCA analysis of such features confirms the different formation quality levels defined a priori after visual inspection, and, furthermore, suggests a new subclass for abnormal samples, related to the bulkiness of fibre flocks. A multivariate statistical process control framework, based on such PCA description (PCA-MSPC), is proposed to monitor formation quality, which provides quite good results when applied to the available images, as analyzed with the ROC curve for the method and confirmed with a Monte Carlo simulation study using subimages with 1/4 of the size of the original ones.

Clinicians frequently use finger goniometers to measure joint range of motion (ROM) in the digits. Other methods of depicting finger ROM can be beneficial in situations where therapists may not have access to finger goniometers, patients want to self-assess ROM, or therapists want to visually and graphically see composite ROM in the digits. Counterfeiting of banknotes is a crime and seriously harmful to economy. Examination of the paper, ink and toners used to make counterfeit banknotes can provide useful information to classify and link different cases in which the suspects use the same raw materials. In this paper, 21 paper samples of counterfeit banknotes seized from 13 cases were analyzed by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence. After measuring the elemental composition in paper semi-quantitatively, the normalized weight percentage data of 10 elements were processed by multivariate statistical methods of cluster analysis and principle component analysis. All these paper samples were mainly classified into 3 groups. Nine separate cases were successfully linked. It is demonstrated that elemental composition measured by XRF is a useful way to compare and classify papers used in different cases.

At crime scenes, fingerprints are often found on paper. The visualization of invisible fingerprints, so-called latent fingerprints (LFPs), is critical in forensic investigation. Laser-induced fluorescence technology for fingerprint detection has the advantages of sensibility, high-resolution, non-destructiveness and non-contact. In this paper, the characteristics of commonly used paper and the interaction between ultraviolet light and porous paper are briefly analyzed firstly. Next the fingerprint detection device is introduced. Then the output energy of the laser is optimized and a series of experiments are carried out. Local gray value stretching and power enhancement algorithms are used to process the fingerprint fluorescence data, and the high contrast fingerprint images are obtained. The experimental results show that the fingerprint substance and paper are degraded in different degrees under the excitation of ultraviolet light, and the second or third detection can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of detection. By the method of this paper, clear fingerprint images can be obtained quickly, and more than 10 secondary fingerprint structures can be extracted from these fingerprint images, which provides quantitative evidences for criminal investigation.

Real-time crash potential prediction could provide valuable information for Active Traffic Management Systems. Fixed infrastructure-based vehicle detection devices were widely used in the previous studies to obtain different types of data for crash potential prediction. However, it was difficult to obtain data in large range through these devices due to the costs of installation and maintenance. This paper introduced a novel connected vehicle (CV) emulated data for real-time crash potential prediction. Different from the fixed devices’ data, CV emulated data have high flexibility and can be obtained continuously with relatively low cost. Crash and CV emulated data were collected from two urban arterials in Orlando, USA. Crash data were archived by the Signal for Analytics system (S4A), while the CV emulated data were obtained through the data collection API with a high frequency. Different data cleaning and preparation techniques were implemented, while various speed-related variables were generated from the CV emulated data. A Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) neural network was trained to predict the crash potential in the next 5−10 min. The results from the model illustrated the feasibility of using a novel CV emulated data to predict real-time crash potential. The average and 50th percentile speed were the two most important variables for the crash potential prediction. In addition, the proposed LSTM outperformed Bayesian logistics regression and XGBoost in terms of sensitivity, Area under Curve (AUC), and false alarm rate. With the rapid development of the connected vehicle systems, the results from this paper can be extended to other types of vehicles and data, which can significantly enhance traffic safety.

Recycling wastewater of the pulping and paper-making industry are widely considered for clean production, which heavily rely on the timely and accurate monitoring in paper-making wastewater treatment processes. A novel predicting model based on genetic-deep belief network algorithm was proposed to improve the predictive accuracy and reliability for process monitoring. Considering the deep belief networks (DBN) as a deep learning model is aiming to describe the relationship among variables in a complex process modeling, genetic algorithm (GA) was employed to reduce the input variables dimensionality, simplify the network structure and overcome the dynamic characteristic difficulties of process data in monitoring. Compared with DBN and back propagation neural network (BPNN), the GA-DBN effectively achieved a better predictive accuracy than other tests models in complex wastewater treatment processes. The value of the coefficient of determination of GA-DBN model is increased by 1.71–1.86% and 5.21–9.32%, respectively. The GA-DBN model can be structured with fewer variables or samples to describe the complex paper-making wastewater treatment process, obtaining the better model performance and predictive accuracy.

Background: Measurements of parameters from electrocardiograms (ECGs) are still largely performed from paper ECG records. Recent guidelines from regulatory agencies and, in particular, the requirement of the Food and Drug Administration to enforce the digital submission of annotated ECGs have triggered significant efforts in the pharmaceutical industry, which, to comply with the new guidelines, is adopting digital ECG technology. At the same time, the new requirements justify the need for tools to convert existing paper ECG records into digital format, particularly for retrospective studies. Methods: This article presents ECGScan, a computer application developed for the conversion of paper ECG records to digital ECG files. An image processing engine is used to first detect the underlying grid and, subsequently, to extrapolate the ECG waveforms using a technique based on active contour modeling. Results: ECGScan was validated using a set of 60 ECGs for which both the original digital waveform and paper printouts were available. Sample-by-sample comparisons provided evidence of a robust wave reconstruction (root mean square value from 169 PQRST complexes was 16.8 F 11.8 lV). Semiautomatic measurements of QT intervals performed on 144 complexes also indicated a strong agreement between original and derived ECGs (DQT = 0.577 F 5.41 milliseconds). Conclusions: ECGScan provides a robust reconstruction of a digital ECG, both in waveform reconstruction and in QT measurements performed on original (digital) ECGs and on digitized ECGs from paper printouts. Background Prints of electrocardiograms (ECGs) are often sent to core laboratories, where they are scanned, converted to a digital format, and read on-screen. These ECGs may differ from the original ECG because of variability introduced by the printer, scanner, or digitization software. Methods Digital ECGs were recorded in 50 volunteers simultaneously using electrocardiographs from 2 different manufacturers. QT and RR intervals were measured on-screen on the digitized ECGs. To study the contribution of individual steps in the digitization process, differences in RR interval between 2 prints each of 50 digital ECGs, 2 scanned files of 50 prints, 2 digitized files from 50 scanned files, and 2 readings of 50 digitized ECGs (intrareader variability) were analyzed. Results Repeatability coefficient for RR interval measurement was 18.5 milliseconds for machine 1 and 21 milliseconds for machine 2. Contributions of the printer were 6.5 milliseconds for machine 1 and 9.0 milliseconds for machine 2, digitization process was 5.5 milliseconds, and reader variability was 8.0 milliseconds. Variability of the scanner was negligible. Conclusions The printer and digitization process account for significant differences in interval measurements in digitized ECGs.

To compute the similarity of scientific papers, text-based similarity measures, link-based similarity measures, and hybrid methods can be applied. The text-based and link-based similarity measures take into account only a single aspect of scientific papers, content or citations, respectively. The hybrid methods consider both content and citations; however, they do not carefully consider the relation between the content of a pair of papers involved in a citation relationship. In this paper, we propose a novel method, SimCC (similarity based on content and citations), that considers both aspects, content and citations, to compute the similarity of scientific papers. Unlike previous methods, SimCC effectively reflects both content and authority of scientific papers simultaneously in similarity computation by applying a new RA (relevance and authority) weighting scheme. Also, we propose an RA+R weighting scheme to consider the recency of papers and an RA+E weighting scheme to take into account the author expertise of papers in similarity computation. The effectiveness of our proposed method is demonstrated by extensive experiments on a real-world dataset of scientific papers. The results show that our method achieves more than 100% improvement in accuracy in comparison with previous methods.

Intrusion Detection System (IDS) has been an effective way to achieve higher security in detecting malicious activities for the past couple of years. Anomaly detection is an intrusion detection system. Current anomaly detection is often associated with high false alarm rates and only moderate accuracy and detection rates because it’s unable to detect all types of attacks correctly. An experiment is carried out to evaluate the performance of the different machine learning algorithms using KDD-99 Cup and NSL-KDD datasets. Results show which approach has performed better in term of accuracy, detection rate with reasonable false alarm rate.

Section identification is an important task for library science, especially knowledge management. Identifying the sections of a paper would help filter noise in entity and relation extraction. In this research, we studied the paper section identification problem in the context of Chinese medical literature analysis, where the subjects, methods, and results are more valuable from a physician's perspective. Based on previous studies on English literature section identification, we experiment with the effective features to use with classic machine learning algorithms to tackle the problem. It is found that Conditional Random Fields, which consider sentence interdependency, is more effective in combining different feature sets, such as bag-of-words, part-of-speech, and headings, for Chinese literature section identification. Moreover, we find that classic machine learning algorithms are more effective than generic deep learning models for this problem. Based on these observations, we design a novel deep learning model, the Structural Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (SLSTM) model, which models word and sentence interdependency together with the contextual information. Experiments on a human-curated asthma literature dataset show that our approach outperforms the traditional machine learning methods and other deep learning methods and achieves close to 90% precision and recall in the task. The model shows good potential for use in other text mining tasks. The research has significant methodological and practical implications.

There have been several cases in the news regarding the presence of synthetic cannabinoids on paper being smuggled into jails and prisons in the United States. The Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner has been involved in the analysis of multiple cases. For the first time the laboratory received an analysis request for not only identification of controlled substances, but also for the presence of latent fingerprints. It was unknown if the processing methods used by the latent print unit would interfere with the identification of the controlled substances. This paper shows that DFO and ninhydrin processing will remove some of the synthetic cannabinoids, possibly effecting concentration on the paper, but the substances were still able to be positively identified after processing.

This paper discusses the legal issues generated by the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) and cognitive robotics technologies in the area of law enforcement. This can be referred to as “automated law enforcement”. The paper starts by providing a quick reminder on “law enforcement” (1). It moves on to provide an overview of “automated law enforcement” systems (2). It then discusses philosophical issues (3) and conventional legal issues (4).
