Bioadhesives derived from biomass are steadily gaining spotlight as substitutes for formaldehyde-based resins in the adhesive industry. However, there is a need to develop novel water-resistant bioadhesives with high adhesive and cohesive strengths because the currently available biomaterial-based adhesives have low mechanical strength. In this study, a complex coacervate was prepared easily by mixing silk fibroin and tannic acid to produce a bioadhesive with high adhesive and cohesive strengths as well as water resistance. The silk fibroin-tannic acid coacervate adhered well to various substrates, and its adhesive strength according to the type of substrate and water contact angle were evaluated comparatively. In particular, the adhesive strength of this adhesive on a wood substrate was systematically analyzed by varying different experimental parameters (relative humidity, surface roughness of the substrate, water stability, and pH). This cost-effective coacervate is applicable as an eco-friendly wood adhesive.

Anaerobic digestion of organic waste results in production of biogas and a nutrient-rich digestate that has an established use as fertilizer in plant production. This study evaluated use of anaerobic digestate based on a high concentration of organic household waste as a fertilizer in sawdust-based production of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). Inclusion of 0.5 L of anaerobic digestate (AD) per kg sawdust gave similar productivity in terms of biological efficiency (79.5 +/- 5.4 %), and protein concentration (24.7 +/- 2.4 % of dry weight (dw)) as standard mushroom substrate (78.1 +/- 5.3 %, and 21.9 +/- 3.0 % of dw, respectively). However, mushroom growth was impaired at the highest concentration of anaerobic digestate tested, 1 L digestate per kg dw sawdust. Comparison of the AD-fertilized substrate with a mushroom substrate with standard components (sawdust, wheat bran, calcium sulfate) and with similar C/N-ratio revealed some differences in elemental composition of the fruiting bodies, with an major increase in sodium concentration for the AD-fertilized substrate compared with the standard substrate (413.3 +/- 28.9 and 226.7 +/- 30.6 mg kg(-1) dw, respectively). This difference can be explained by high sodium concentration in the anaerobic digestate, most likely due to inclusion of food scraps from households and restaurants in the biodigester feedstock. Screening of both substrates for a total of 133 micro -pollutants revealed that total sum of micropollutants was significantly higher in the AD-fertilized substrate (258 +/- 12 ng/g dw substrate) than in the standard substrate (191 +/- 35 ng/g dw substrate). Nitrogen losses during preparation of the AD-fertilized substrate were negligible.

Major source of carbon-containing air born particular matter that significantly pollutes environment and provokes development of neuropathology is forest fires and wood combustion. Here, water-suspended smoke particulate matter preparations (SPs) were synthesized from birch, pine, poplar wood, and also birch bark and pine needles. Taking into account importance of the gut-brain communication system, SP properties were compared regarding their capability to modulate functioning of nerve terminals and gut cells/preparations. In cortex nerve terminals, poplar wood SP was more effective in decreasing uptake and increasing the extracellular levels of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters L-[

Hierarchically cellular, stiff, and lightweight niobium carbide (NbC)-pyrolytic carbon (PyC) monolithic foam composites possessing excellent electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) were developed via a natural wood template-based method. Pyrolytic carbon derived from the decomposed cellulose in the wood worked as the carbon source for the growth of NbC phase, and the NbC-PyC heterogeneous nano-interface formed between the residual PyC and the freshly formed NbC. Multi-loss mechanisms (e.g. conductive loss, dipole polarization loss, and especially interface polarization loss) were established by controlling the NbC content and residual PyC phase in the NbC-PyC foams, which significantly improved the absorption capability. Compared to 28.0 dB of PyC monolith, the EMI SE of NbC-PyC foam can reach 54.8 dB when the thickness is 0.5 mm, which outperforms the other porous-based shielding materials. Due to the highly porous structure of pristine wood, the resulting NbC-PyC foam exhibited a low density of 0.48 g/cm3, which is ~ 1/16 of dense NbC (7.78 g/cm3). Generally, this work introduces innovative ideas for designing novel and advanced transition metal carbide–carbon composite materials.

In this study, major factors involved in regulating ethanol production from wood by the saprotrophic white-rot fungus Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 were investigated. P. sordida YK-624 produced ethanol from wood meal culture without the addition of any nutrients, and ethanol was produced from wood culture only when the oxygen concentration in headspace was reduced to ≤5%; thereafter, ethanol production ceased within a few days. Analyses of gene expression during aerobic incubation indicated that P. sordida simultaneously upregulates the glycolytic pathway from sugar uptake to pyruvate conversion during ethanol fermentation and suppresses pyruvate influx into the TCA cycle. Upon termination of ethanol fermentation, the expression of all tested genes was repressed, and the fungus ceased to grow. In contrast, the fungus could utilize ethanol for aerobic growth. These results suggest that ethanol fermentation by P. sordida functions as a short-term stress response system under anaerobic conditions during wood decay, enabling the fungus to rapidly resume growing when oxygen is supplied (e.g., following breakdown of plant cell walls or removal of the fungus from water immersion). This is the first report to describe the physiologic significance of ethanol fermentation in saprotrophic white-rot fungi.

This paper reports a fresh and robust strategy to develop polyurethane/polysiloxane pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) with excellent properties by replacing part of C5 petroleum resin with modified lignin. A unique aspect of this work is the use of renewable lignin to obtain modified monomers. The phenolic hydroxyl group of lignin is increased by 21.4% after demethylation, which will help to introduce 6-bromo-1-hexene into the lignin structure through Williamson method. The L3 lignin and C5 petroleum resin are mixed with polyurethane/polysiloxane prepolymer, and furthermore a series of PSAs are obtained under ultraviolet light. It turns out that L3 lignin can not only replace part of C5 petroleum resin, but also obtain attractive and controllable features. Especially when the mass ratio of C5 petroleum resin to L3 lignin is 6:4, compared with pure C5 petroleum resin, the 180° peel strength and the shear strength of PU46 are increased by 24.1% and 91.5% respectively. Additionally, the shear strength on the wood substrate is increased by 320.6%. This study provides an effective method for the preparation of high value-added lignin PSA, and expands the application fields of PSA.

Wood from invasive tree species Acacia dealbata and Ailanthus altissima was used to produce high value-added nanocellulose. Firstly, bleached pulps were produced from the wood of these tree species after kraft cooking. Afterwards, the resultant pulps were pre-treated by TEMPO-mediated oxidation (Acacia dealbata) or enzymatic hydrolysis (Ailanthus altissima) followed by high-pressure homogenization. Hydrogels were obtained and characterized for their main physical and chemical properties, including rheology measurements. After freeze-drying, the surface properties of the materials were evaluated by inverse gas chromatography. Results showed that nano/micro fibrils could be obtained from the wood of these invasive species. Rheometry studies showed that Acacia-TEMPO cellulose nanofibrils form strong gels with high yield stress point and viscosities (reaching ca. 100,000 Pa·s). Additionally, the surfaces of the obtained nanocelluloses showed a dispersive component of the surface energy near 40 mJ/m2 and a prevalence of the Lewis acidic character over the basic one, as typical for cellulose-based materials. Finally, films with good mechanical and optical properties could be obtained from the cellulose hydrogels. Acacia-TEMPO film (produced by filtration/hot pressing) showed a tensile strength of 79 MPa, Young's modulus of 7.9 GPa, and a transparency of 88%. The water vapor barrier, however, was modest (permeability of 4.9 × 10−6 g/(Pa·day·m)).

Wood is a state-of-art, renewable, and sustainable building material with excellent mechanical properties but negligible triboelectric polarizability. Strategies to improve and rationally tune the triboelectric properties of wood are needed to further its application for mechanical energy harvesting in smart buildings. We found that wood becomes more triboelectrically positive when modified by in situ-grown zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a metal-organic framework (MOF), and more triboelectrically negative when coated with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) made with two radial-cut wood samples (L x R x T: 35 x 20 x 1 mm(3)), respectively functionalized with ZIF-8 and PDMS, can generate an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 24.3 V and a short-circuit current (Isc) of 0.32 mu A upon 50 N, 80 times higher compared with that of native wood. We demonstrate the applicability of our functionalized wood TENG (FW-TENG) in smart buildings by using it to power household lamps, calculators, and electrochromic windows. ISSN:2590-2385

Copper-based pesticides and wood preservatives could end up in the environment during production, use, and end-of-life via different pathways that could cause unintended ecological and adverse health effects. This paper provides the effect of colloid-size Cu-based pesticides (CuPRO and Kocide), micronized Cu azole (MCA-1 and MCA-2) and alkaline Cu quaternary (ACQ) treated woods, Cu(2+), Cu(2+) spiked untreated wood (UTW), and CuCO(3) solutions against Gram-positive Bacillus species using five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD(5)) standard test. The total Cu leached from MCA-1, MCA-2, and ACQ in Milli-Q water after 5 days were ˜0.1, ˜0.11, and ˜0.64 g/kg of wood, respectively. However, the form of Cu leached from MCA woods was mostly ionic (> 90%). The total organic carbon (TOC) content of any tested wood (UTW/MCA-1/MCA-2/ACQ) was ˜99% of its corresponding total carbon (TC) content, whereas the TOC of any tested wood sawdust exceeded that of its corresponding piece/block by > 300%. The dissolved oxygen (DO) consumption value in the presence of Cu(2+), CuCO(3), CuPRO, and Kocide solutions was significantly influenced by Cu particles/ions. However, the DO consumption value in the presence of UTW/MCA-1/MCA-2/ACQ woods was significantly influenced by organics leached from woods. On the other hand, the DO consumption of MCA sawdust was greater than (300%) that of MCA pieces/block. The findings of this study provide more insight into how organics leached from woods significantly reduce the toxic effects of Cu ions against Gram-positive Bacillus species.

The Royal Palace of Norway has a large 19th century wooden furniture collection and most of it is coated with shellac-based varnishes. Since these objects are part of the royal collections, they are still in daily use at the different residences and, therefore, need to be frequently cleaned. In this work, the effect of three cleaning commercial products (Baolin, Centurio, Fulgentin) used at the royal collections on shellac-coated mahogany is investigated for the first time. A non-invasive methodology (portable ER-FTIR spectroscopy and colorimetry) was applied to assess whether the chemical composition and the color of fresh and artificially aged mahogany wood mock-ups coated with shellac were affected by the above-mentioned cleaning products. This study shows that one of them causes changes in the varnished wood, thus potentially affecting the long-term conservation of this furniture collection. The aim of this study was to investigate how the carbon accounting of a wooden single-family house is affected by (1) decreasing the carbon footprint by changes in building design, (2) differentiating biogenic carbon from fossil carbon and (3) including external benefits beyond the state-of-the-art system boundaries. The motivation of exploring different system boundaries, improved building design and investigating benefits aside of system boundaries rely on the fact of having the “full” picture of GHG emissions of building products. Changes in building design were analyzed by life cycle assessment (LCA) focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while the costs were assessed by using lice cycle cost (LCC). The findings showed that by including positive and negative emissions from the production phase for an improved building design within scenario 4 ‘Cradle to Gate + Biogenic Carbon + D module’ has the lowest embodied GHG emissions when compared to other approaches with −3.5 kg CO2e/m2/y50. Considering the impacts of the whole building, the lowest GHG emissions are within the scenario 8 ‘Cradle to Grave + Biogenic Carbon + D module‘ for the improved building design with −0.7 kg CO2e/m2/y50. The results suggest that a change to sustainable alternatives for building components that makes the whole building to be constructed by wood, could lead to significant reduction of GHG emissions compared to conventional material choices. Economically, testing sustainable solutions, the highlighted results are the construction costs that are almost double higher for CLT elements for the foundation compared to concrete. © 2023

Polymeric wood hemicelluloses are depicted to join cellulose, starch and chitosan as key polysaccharides for sustainable materials engineering. However, the approaches to incorporate hemicelluloses in emerging bio-based products are challenged by lack of specific benefit, other than the biomass-origin, although their utilization would contribute to sustainable material use since they currently are a side stream that is not valorized. Here we demonstrate wood-xylans as swelling modifiers for neutral and charged nanocellulose films that have already entered the sustainable packaging applications, however, suffer from humidity sensitivity. The oxidative modification is used to modulate the water-solubility of xylan and hence enable adsorption in an aqueous environment. A high molecular weight grade, hence less water-soluble, adsorbed preferentially on the neutral surface while the adsorbed amount on a negatively charged surface was independent of the molecular weight, and hence, solubility. The adsorption of the oxidized xylans on a neutral cellulose surface resulted in an increase in the amount of water in the film while on the negatively charged cellulose the total amount of water decreased. The finding of synergy of two hygroscopic materials to decrease swelling in hydrophilic bio-polymer films demonstrates the oxidized macromolecule xylan as structurally functional component in emerging cellulose products.

Thermal modification reduces the hygroscopicity of timber potentially reducing susceptibility to biological degradation, but it is also energetically intensive. Identifying methods for accelerating the process could reduce these inputs. The potential effects of glycerol pretreatment on thermal modification was investigated by pre-treating poplar wood (Populus tomentosa Carr.) with 60% glycerol followed by thermal modification at temperatures between 120 and 200 °C for 4 h. Potential changes in the wood were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy to detect the changes in cell wall components, crystallinity, the average size of the crystalline region and cell wall thickness. Glycerol accelerated lignin decomposition over the entire temperature range. Thermal modification altered the degree of cellulose crystallinity as well as the average size of the crystalline region and the effects were more noticeable with the glycerol pre-treatment. The cell wall thickness of thermally treated wood decreased with increasing temperature and glycerol accelerated this process. Glycerol appears to enhance the modification process with increasing treatment temperature.

Kraft lignin, so far useful for energy generation, has been gathering considerable attention as an alternative material to replace fossil-based resources mainly due to its high phenolic content. However, the wide molecular weight distribution and chemical composition heterogeneity led to the development of fractionation methods. Herein, to narrow such characteristics we used eucalypt kraft lignin fractionated at pH's 9, 7, 5 and 3 by sequential acid precipitation. These lignin fractions were first characterised by simultaneous pyrolysis and trimethylsilylation (SPyT) with N-Methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide with posterior tests of antioxidant, antibacterial, and antitumour activities. We observed higher ratio of syringyl/guaiacyl groups and increase in antioxidant activity in those fractions with lower molecular weight (precipitated at lower pH's). Fractions precipitated at pH's 9 and 7 have shown an outstanding antibacterial activity against five bacteria. Moreover, fractions 7 and 5 presented at cytotoxicity tests higher ability to inhibit the growth of U87MG and T98G glioma cells, while only a slight inhibition of adult human fibroblasts (non-tumour cells) was detected.

International audience; Using a compartment with adjustable oxygen concentration and internal pressure, the shrinkage and cracking of isotropic char layer during pyrolysis were studied by pyrolyzing the medium density fibreboard (MDF) in inert atmosphere with different ambient pressures. The experimental results have shown that the ambient pressure has insignificant effect on shrinkage although some trends have been identified. Therefore, the reduction of tensile strength of material dominates the char cracking under low pressures, leading to noticeableincrease in the number of char fissures. The char shrinkage could expose the raw material beneath the char layer and enhance the radiative heat transfer at the sample surface (by fissure width instead of number), which is modeled using a modified thermal conductivity as the typical simplification. It is found that the mass loss rate at the early pyrolysis stage increases up to 20% with increasing width of char fissures. However, the external radiation can only affect a limited depth in the near surface zone which is found less than 3 mm in the current experiments. The thermal conductivity under near regular pressure could be over 2 times higher than its value under low pressure (30 kPa) and with which the differences in the first peaks of mass loss rate under different pressures can be well predicted.

Developing effective policy solutions to transition away from the use of solid fuels for residential heating purposes can be hindered by the lack of reliable data on its use. One such issue is the extent of informal solid fuel use, that is, consumption from sources outside of formal commercial channels. This is an area which has been largely ignored in previous empirical research. Using a survey of residential solid fuel users, the extent of solid fuel use in the residential sector in Ireland from informal sources for two fuels, sod peat and wood, is quantified. Sod peat is found to be almost exclusively sourced informally while just over half of wood use is estimated to be sourced by households in this way. Factors including location, household income, being a primary user of the fuel and having strong cost motivations all effect the probability of sourcing solid fuels informally relative to formal sources. The sizeable extent to which informal sources of solid fuels are used in Ireland arising from the analysis in this paper, highlights the potential for substitution to this unregulated alternative. This should be carefully monitored for effective implementation of new and existing solid fuel regulations.

The abundance of synthetic polymers has become an ever-increasing environmental threat in the world. The excessive utilization of plastics leads to the accumulation of such recalcitrant pollutants in the environment. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, unprecedented demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, face masks, and gloves made up of single-use items has resulted in the massive generation of plastic biomedical waste. As secondary pollutants, microplastic particles (5 mm) are derived from pellet loss and degradation of macroplastics. Therefore, urgent intervention is required for the management of these hazardous materials. Physicochemical approaches have been employed to degrade synthetic polymers, but these approaches have limited efficiency and cause the release of hazardous metabolites or by-products into the environment. Therefore, bioremediation is a proper option as it is both cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. On the other hand, plants evolved lignocellulose to be resistant to destruction, whereas insects, such as wood-feeding termites, possess diverse microorganisms in their guts, which confer physiological and ecological benefits to their host. Plastic and lignocellulose polymers share a number of physical and chemical properties, despite their structural and recalcitrance differences. Among these similarities are a hydrophobic nature, a carbon skeleton, and amorphous/crystalline regions. Compared with herbivorous mammals, lignocellulose digestion in termites is accomplished at ordinary temperatures. This unique characteristic has been of great interest for the development of a plastic biodegradation approach by termites and their gut symbionts. Therefore, transferring knowledge from research on lignocellulosic degradation by termites and their gut symbionts to that on synthetic polymers has become a new research hotspot and technological development direction to solve the environmental bottleneck caused by synthetic plastic polymers.

Wood dust is the major wastes from timber and wood-based panel processing, including wood sawing, sanding, chipping, flaking, etc., which easily causes fire and explosions. The fine wood dust had risks of inhaling the dust air, causing problems to the respiratory system of workers, as well as the explosive risk of the wood dust-air mixture. Wood dust explosions occur worldwide, which have caused massive damages to equipment, buildings, and environments, killed people, and threatened human health. This study was aimed at exploring the causes, affecting factors, mechanisms, models of wood dust explosions, and their environmental/health impacts through reviewing and analyzing the collected data in order to minimize wood dust explosion risks by improving of safety procedures in the wood processing industry. To better understood and prevent wood dust explosion cases in the future, this review collected the explosion reports and analyzed the accident information through the following aspects: 1) Summarization of published review articles regarding wood dust explosions in Introduction, 2) Scrutinization of wood dust explosion cases and design of testing device, 3) Exploration of effects of wood dust properties and surrounding conditions on explosion and their mechanisms, 4) Investigation of methods for reducing wood dust explosion risks, 5) Modeling and simulation of wood dust explosions, 6) Examination of environmental and health impacts of wood dust explosions. Finally, the findings in this review were summarized in Conclusions. By collecting dust explosion reports, reviewing literature, and analyzing the collected data, wood dust explosions can be better understood. The results of this study can be useful for the design of equipment and dust absorption systems, as well as further suggestion of safety improvement procedures to minimize or eliminate risks of wood dust-related fire and explosion in the wood processing industry and mitigate its impacts on environments and health.

The adsorption behaviors of two glucanases, TvEG and TrCel7A, on three lignins were investigated. Three lignins were isolated from raw aspen and its pretreated solid residue. The isolated lignins were labeled as Asp-MWL, DA-MWL (pretreated by dilute acid), and GL-MWL (pretreated by green liquor), respectively. The surface properties of lignins and spin-coated lignin films were characterized by zeta potential, atomic force microscope (AFM) and contact angle. The enzyme adsorption behavior was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and fluorescence spectrometer. TlCel7A had similar adsorption capacities on the three lignin films but were higher than those of TvEG. The TrCel7A adsorptions on the three lignin films were affected by synergistic effect of electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction while the TvEG adsorptions on the three lignin films were mainly dominated by hydrophobic action. The adsorption capacities of TlCel7A and TvEG on the three lignin films were decreased by adding SL. Plausible explanation was that the SL and glucanase formed a complex with more negative charges, which suppressed the adsorption of glucannase on lignin through electrostatic repulsion. It also explained the improved enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of lignocellulose upon adding SL.

Pyrolysis is a key process in all stages of wood burning from ignition to extinction. Understanding each stage is crucial to tackle wildfires and assess the fire safety of timber buildings. A model of appropriate complexity of wood pyrolysis and oxidation is missing, which limits the understanding of fires fuelled by wood. Progress towards this aim has been slow in recent years, as the role of chemical kinetics is still debated. Three predominant theories hypothesis that chemistry is either infinitely fast (de Ris), a function of char depth (Atreya), or a function of heat flux (Suuberg). This paper proposes a novel multi-scale model of wood pyrolysis and oxidation for predicting the charring of timber. The chemical kinetics sub-model was previously validated at the microscale (mg-samples). We favourably compare the complete model against a large range of mesoscale experiments (g-samples) found in the literature of different moisture contents (0–30%), heat fluxes (0–60 kW/m2), oxygen concentrations (0–21%), grain directions (parallel/perpendicular), and combinations thereof. The model was then used to calculate the transient Damkohler number of wood at different depths and heat fluxes. This analysis showed that chemistry and heat transfer are both important at all heat fluxes and stages of burning relevant to fire, which unifies the three theories by Suuberg, Atreya, and de Ris. We argue that the model is of currently appropriate complexity to predict the charring of timber. These findings improve our understanding of wood pyrolysis and the modelling of timber burning across scales.

Wood and composites cantilever beam structure has gained attention among researchers in the current years due to its universal structural applications, such as bridges, aeroplane wings, buildings, and transmission towers. However, when the structure is exposed to a constant loading for a very long time, it induces a structural collapse due to creep deformation. Therefore, it is essential to understand and identify the initial creep that can lead to structural collapse. In this study, wood and composite materials exhibit the same structural material morphology which performs as anisotropic material as it majorly contributes to failure. In this study, a state-of-the-art review of creep analysis and engineering design is carried out, with particular emphasis on the creep methodology of a cantilever beam. The existing theories and creep design approaches are grouped into two analysis methods, namely experimental and numerical approaches. To be more specific, the experimental works involved two main methods, namely load-based (conventional) and temperature-based (accelerated) techniques. Selected creep test on cantilever beam structure and coupon scale of wood and composite were highlighted and proposed as the building blocks for a prospective structural creep methodology. These aids build confidence in the underlying methods while guiding future work and areas, especially for long-term service of full-scale structure. At the end, the challenges of creep behaviour description accuracy and improvement on the strength criteria in engineering design were presented.

The aim of this work was to synthesize pinus residue/pectin-based composite hydrogels for the immobilization of β-D-galactosidase. These hydrogels were synthesized via chemical crosslinking, and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, mechanical assays, X-ray diffraction, and swelling kinetics. The water absorption mechanism in the hydrogel networks occurs by non-Fickian transport. The β-D-galactosidase immobilization capacities of the hydrogels containing 0, 5 and 10% of pinus residue were respectively 242.08 ± 0.36, 181.27 ± 0.50 and 182.71 ± 0.36 mg enzyme per g dried hydrogel, at pH 4.0 and after 600 min. These values were 182.99 ± 0.41, 219.99 ± 0.47 and 218.56 ± 0.39 mg g−1, respectively, at pH 5.6. Pectin-based hydrogels demonstrated to be excellent solid supports for the immobilization of enzymes. β-D-Galactosidase immobilized in pectin-based hydrogels could be applied in the hydrolysis of lactose contained in either dairy foods or lactose-intolerant individuals.

This paper presents a novel development of sludge cellulose plastic composite (SPC) in line with the circular economy concept by using recovered sludge cellulose from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Bearing the aim of replacing the wood in wood plastic composite (WPC) with sludge cellulose, WPC was developed in parallel for determining the substitution potentials. In order to maximise the integration of properties, maleic anhydride (MA) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) coupling agents were employed to refine the interfacial bonding of both SPC and WPC. In line with the main aim of circular economy – to decouple the economic value from the environmental impact, eco-efficiency analysis was performed for the developed process. The results showed that the tensile and flexural strength of the composites were substantially enhanced after both treatments, while MA appeared to be more efficient than VTMS in the refinery of interfacial bonding. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis confirmed the improvement of interface by identifying well embedded and firmly bonded wood flour or sludge cellulose in the matrix. WPC was marginally more thermally stable than SPC, while SPC suggested comparable flexural properties. Eco-efficiency assessment results showed that the SPC had better environmental and economic performance than the WPC. The latter turns sludge cellulose as a promising sustainable alternative to wood or natural fibres in the production of WPC.

New classes of biosorbents are needed for various environment remediation applications. Thus, a facile and benign approach to synthesize porous biosorbents was developed using acidic or alkaline one-step ball milling of hickory wood biomass (AcBH and AlBH, respectively) without any external heat treatment, and their properties were compared. Various construction materials and interior equipment contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Their higher quantities in indoor air are linked to poor health consequences and are controversial regarding health risks, given that people spend so much time indoors. As a result, VOCs in indoor air cause concern regarding sick building syndrome. From a historical perspective, wood and wood-based panels have been frequently employed. Nonetheless, wood appears to be a product and a material of the future in today's world. The emission of VOCs from wood and wood products is essential when assessing the impact of different materials on the indoor environment. The emission rate is affected by both the wood species and the boundary circumstances (drying, storage, etc.). The issue of VOCs emitted from wood, and wood-based panels are addressed in this review paper. The most prevalent VOCs were listed. The advantages and limits of using VOCs for analytical determination from these composites are discussed.

A growing global population coupled with rising industrialization has led to an ever increasing energy demand, which in turn forced us to turn to fossils without sufficient consideration of the consequences. The most serious consequence, as is evident today, is the increase in CO2 levels responsible for adverse climate change, which compelled the United Nations to develop the Sustainable Energy Goal 13 (SDG-13), calling for immediate action to combat climate change and its effects. On the other hand, the increase in population has also resulted in a tremendous increase in waste generation, necessitating the need for safe and sustainable waste treatment. Over recent years, research has been concentrating on advanced thermal plasma technology to valorize diverse wastes into useful energy. The generated syngas can be utilized for energetic (such as heat and electricity) and chemical (such as methanol and dimethyl ether) end applications. The current investigation analyzes the viability of the thermal plasma system (a water-stabilized DC plasma torch) for the pyrolysis, partial pyrolysis, and gasification of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) coupled with the implementation of the CCUS concept using waste CO2 as a gasi-fying agent (which is planned to be separated from flue gas coming from waste combustion) and converting it into CO in the syngas through plasma valorization of RDF. A comparative evaluation of the attributes, impurities, and yield of syngas and the generation of solids (ash and char) is carried out along with the analysis of per-formance parameters for four different cases (with variable inputs of CO2, namely 173, 62, 26 and 0 L/m with gasification ratio ranging from 1.04 to 0.4). The syngas constituents are compared to the equilibrium compo-sitions deduced by developing an equilibrium model in Aspen Plus (V 11.0) thermodynamic environment and are found to be close to the theoretical compositions. The highest gas yield is found for Case-I with 3.44 m3/kg due to the maximum carbon conversion, while the minimum gas yield is assessed as 1.60 m3/kg for Case-IV with high char production. Furthermore, H2 production was found to be almost the same for all cases (1.06-1.12 m3/kg of fuel). Furthermore, energetic efficiencies for all the four cases (63 %, 60 %, 62 % and 58 %) clearly reveal an encouraging energy balance. The theoretical maximum values of contaminants such as NH3, H2S, HCl, HF and HBr are calculated and a design of a syngas cleaning system is proposed. The promising results of the study can be considered a small but significant step towards SDG-13.

Thermochemical conversion of larger biomass particles (thermally thick regime) toward high-end products still suffers from an unrevealed quantitative relationship between process and product parameters. The main issue relates to the influence of heating rate within the particle, critical conversion-wise but difficult to assess experimentally. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling may help, but first the model must prove its reliability to prevent error transfer to the results. This study aimed to provide an unbiased, state-of-the-art model constructed in a stepwise mode to investigate the heating rate's distribution. Several datasets with broadly varying parameters from the literature were used for the development and validation since the reproduction of datasets would not bring novelty to solving the problem. Instead of the model's calibration to fit to the data, the parameters for each step-model were meticulously selected to match the experimental conditions. The stepwise development showed the best accuracy when the anisotropy and the heat sink drying sub-model were implemented. Moreover, using the Ranzi-Anca-Couce (RAC) scheme led to more accurate results than the Ranzi scheme. The comprehensive model was positively validated against a broad range of production parameters (pyrolysis temperature: 500 degrees C - 840 degrees C, diameter of particles: 10 mm - 20 mm, shapes: cylinders and spheres). Investigation showed a pattern in volatiles release profiles and homogeneous heating rate distribution when particle size is below 4 mm. Despite basing the models on the literature's data, the study includes novel and valuable insights for biomass conversion and constitutes a solid foundation for future development.

The use of wood-based products might contribute to the mitigation of climate change and resource depletion in the building sector. However, the increasing demand for wood-based products might generate a trade-off affecting biomass availability, forest ecosystem services, and the climate change mitigation potential of forests. Therefore, it is important to couple the use of wood-based products with the adoption of circular economy strategies. Upstream strategies can facilitate the future reuse of wood elements in new buildings, whilst downstream strategies aim at the reuse wood elements originating from demolished or disassembled buildings, in new buildings. The aim of this study was to identify patterns describing upstream and downstream strategies currently adopted in architectural practice. A sample of real-world case-study buildings was identified and the respective designers were interviewed. The interviews identified three patterns for upstream strategies, namely the reversibility of joints, independenceof different building components and prefabrication, and two patterns for downstream strategies, namely the recovery of salvaged wood and adaptability of the building layout. Several challenges were also highlighted. The use of upstream and downstream strategies can increase the time (and costs) in the design and manufacturing phase. Downstream strategies can also be influenced by the quality of salvaged wood. Upstream strategies showed difficulties to comply with current building standards (e.g. acoustic standards). Finally, metrics and indicators are needed in order to measure the efficiency of wood recirculation in upstream and downstream strategies, as well as to support their implementation.

Ultrasonic impregnation is thought to be an effective way of permeation of liquid into material through the material-surface reforming with the attack by an ultrasonic cavitation jet or by the shock wave emitted from a collapsing bubble, or through dynamic transformation of material like a sponge. The action of a cavitation bubble can also provide penetration of liquid into the interior of the material. This paper investigates whether there is a correlation between the intensity of sonoluminescence (SL) measured at different positions and the increment in the mass of the wood material (cedar) after sonication with immersion into water in order to clarify the role of cavitation bubbles for ultrasonic impregnation. It was found that a high mass change was obtained for the material located at the position for high (the maximum) SL intensity. The number density of ultrasonic cavitation bubbles that are able to collapse leading to the emission of SL is correlated with the degree of ultrasonic impregnation.

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 Elsevier Ltd This study presents an environmentally friendly process to produce high-purity cellulose (dissolving pulp) from birch wood by combining γ-valerolactone (GVL)/water fractionation and ionic liquid treatment of pulp, IONCELL-P (IP). A paper grade pulp was produced from optimal GVL cook with a similar composition to birch kraft pulp and was bleached with ECF sequence before the hemicelluloses were removed using the IONCELL-P process. The purity of the GVL-IP pulp significantly exceeded that of commercial prehydrolysis kraft (PHK) and prehydrolysis soda-anthraquinone (PH-Soda-AQ) pulps. IONCELL-P extraction removed more than 90% of the hemicelluloses, resulting in a dissolving pulp with a purity of 96% and a high molecular mass fraction, 2.3 times higher than that of a conventional PHK pulp. GVL-IP pulps are suitable not only for regenerated cellulose fibers or films, but also for high-purity, high-viscosity cellulose acetate and ethers, which cannot be produced in an environmentally friendly way by conventional processes.

Wood-based biochar, as a metal-free heterogeneous activator of peroxydisulfate (PDS), was successfully prepared by pyrolysis of polar sawdust for efficient removal of Acid Orange 7 (AO7). The results demonstrate PDS could be effectively activated by wood-based biochar, and AO7 was rapidly eliminated in a wide range of pH value (3.0–10.0) with AO7 removal achieved ≥ 99.3% after 14 min reaction. The dominant reactive species in the biochar/PDS system were verified via radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique. It is speculated that sulfate radicals (SO4•−) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were formed on the surface of biochar. Based on the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), π-electron density and oxygen-containing functional groups (especially C–OH) on biochar surface were active centers for the catalytic reaction. Recycle experiments of biochar for 4 runs were carried out and the regeneration method of the catalyst was also studied.

Biochar is a promising material for facilitating the reclamation of oil sands process water (OSPW); however, how biochar properties can be optimized for metal removal from OSPW is not well studied. This study was conducted to determine relationships among feedstock type, pyrolysis condition, biochar property, and lead(II) adsorption capacity to demonstrate the potential use of biochar for metal removal from a synthetic OSPW. Sawdust, canola and wheat straw, and manure pellet were pyrolyzed at 300, 500, and 700 °C, with or without steam activation. Increasing pyrolysis temperature increased, with a few exceptions, biochar pH, surface area, and carbon content, but decreased hydrogen and oxygen contents and surface functional groups. Steam activation increased surface area but did not affect other properties. For non-steam-activated biochars, canola and wheat straw biochars produced at 700 °C had the highest lead(II) adsorption capacity (Qmax_Pb), at 108 and 109 mg g−1, respectively. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature increased Qmax_Pb due to increased biochar pH, ash content, and surface area by increasing precipitation, ion exchange, and inner-sphere complexation of lead(II). Steam activation increased lead(II) adsorption capacity for most biochars mainly due to the increased surface area, with the highest Qmax_Pb at 195 mg g−1 for canola straw biochar pyrolyzed at 700 °C with steam activation. The adsorption with time followed a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The results of this study will help select most effective biochars that can be produced from locally available agricultural or forestry byproducts that are optimized for metal removal from synthetic OSPW.

The impact of various degrees of acetylation on improving the thermal stability of xylan isolated from different botanical source has been studied; methylglucuronoxylan from birch and eucalyptus, arabinoglucuronoxylan from spruce and glucuronoarabinoxylan from sugarcane bagasse and straw. The lower molecular weight of nonacetylated methylglucuronoxylan (17.7-23.7 kDa) and arabinoglucuronoxylan (16.8 kDa) meant that they were more soluble in water than glucuronoarabinoxylan (43.0-47.0 kDa). The temperature at the onset of degradation increased by 17-61 degrees C and by 75-145 degrees C for low and high acetylated xylans respectively, as a result of acetylation. A glass transition temperature in the range of 121-132 degrees C was observed for the samples non-acetylated and acetylated at low degree of acetylation (0.0-0.6). The acetylation to higher degrees (1.4-1.8) increased the glass transition temperature of the samples to 189-206 degrees C. Acetylation proved to be an efficient method for functionalization of the xylan to increase the thermal stability.

In China, the huge amounts of energy consumption caused severe carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) concentration in the soil and ambient air. This paper summarized that the references published in 2008–2018 and suggested that biomass, coal and vehicular emissions were categorized as major sources of PAHs in China. In 2016, the emitted PAHs in China due to the incomplete combustion of fuel was about 32720 tonnes, and the contribution of the emission sources was the sequence: biomass combustion > residential coal combustion > vehicle > coke production > refine oil > power plant > natural gas combustion. The total amount of PAHs emission in China at 2016 was significantly decreased due to the decrease of the proportion of crop resides burning (indoor and open burning). The geographical distribution of PAHs concentration demonstrated that PAHs concentration in the urban soil is 0.092–4.733 μg/g. At 2008–2012, the serious PAHs concentration in the urban soil occurred in the eastern China, which was shifted to western China after 2012. The concentration of particulate and gaseous PAHs in China is 1–151 ng/m3 and 1.08–217 ng/m3, respectively. The concentration of particle-bound PAHs in the southwest and eastern region are lower than that in north and central region of China. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) analysis demonstrates that ILCR in the soil and ambient air in China is below the acceptable cancer risk level of 10−6 recommended by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which mean that there is a low potential PAHs carcinogenic risk for the soil and ambient air in China.

The aim of the present study was to obtain the dynamic sensory profile of smoked bacon using Temporal Dominance of Sensations (TDS). Eight samples were studied considering different smoking process: six samples were submitted to conventional smoking using different woods from reforestation and two samples were manufactured with liquid smoke. Seventy-eight regular bacon consumers evaluated the samples using the TDS methodology. TDS data were analyzed based on the sequence (bandplot by attribute and trajectory map) and dominance duration (univariate and multivariate techniques). TDS results showed differences between samples in terms of rate, trajectory and duration of dominant sensations. These differences can be mainly explained by the smoking processes used in their manufacture and by the oral work involved in the mastication task. Overall, TDS was a promising method for capturing temporal sensory changes in smoked bacon.

The co-gasification of beech-wood and polyethylene has been investigated in a lab-scale fluidised-bed reactor in the presence of four different types of bed materials (silica sand, olivine, Na-Y zeolite and ZSM-5 zeolite). ZSM-5 zeolite is very effective as a catalytic bed material in fluidized-bed reactor for wood-only gasification and co-gasification in terms of high hydrogen production and CGE. Na-Y zeolite is more effective compared with ZSM-5 zeolite in co-gasification of the beech-wood and polyethylene process. The catalytic activity in co-gasification of beech-wood and polyethylene can be ranked accordingly: Na-Y zeolite > ZSM-5 zeolite > olivine. In general, higher amounts of steam injected in the fluidized-bed reactor and more polyethylene would lead to higher hydrogen production in the co-gasification process.

This study attempts to employ wood sawdust and rice husk as biorenewable conditioners to improve the efficiency and energy consumption of sewage sludge thermal drying, besides revealing the mechanism of drying. Response surface methodology (RSM) approach has been used to optimize the operational parameters (drying temperature and dose of conditioners). Investigations into the thermal performance, water distribution and morphological of sludge have been used to explain the improvements obtained in the properties of drying with the addition of biomass. The optimal conditions found out were: 10% rice husk and 10% wood sawdust at 120 °C, which resulted in drying time to reduce by 17.64% with the energy consumption savings by 46.37% for the conditioned sludge. Also, the mechanism on the roles of these additives has been found out as follows: (1) Addition of biomass enhances the thermal conductivity of the conditioned sludge, leading to improvements in its heat transfer capacity; (2) Bound water → free water and strongly bonding water → weakly bonding water, due to cationic osmotic effects; (3) Structures with rigidity and porosity provide sufficient passages for the vapors to escape.

We compared the δ13C and δ15N of forest material with an extensive sporocarp collection to elucidate the role of litter, wood and soil as fungal carbon and nitrogen sources in Finnish boreal Picea abies-dominated forests. Ectomycorrhizal Hydnum and Cortinarius had higher δ15N than other ectomycorrhizal fungi, suggesting use of 15N-enriched, deeper nitrogen. Russula had lower δ15N than other ectomycorrhizal fungi and resembled some litter decay genera, suggesting use of litter-derived nitrogen. There was little variation in δ15N among other genera of ectomycorrhizal fungi, indicating limited functional diversity in nitrogen use. Saprotrophic Leotia, Gymnopus, Hypholoma, Pholiota, Rhodocollybia and Calocera had δ15N values similar to ectomycorrhizal fungi, indicating overlap in use of older nitrogen from soil or roots or use of newly fixed nitrogen. Genera of litter and wood decay fungi varied up to 6‰ in δ13C and 10‰ in δ15N, suggesting large differences in carbon and nitrogen sources and processing. Similar δ13C between white and brown rot wood decay fungi also suggest that white rot fungi do not use lignin-derived carbon. Together, these δ13C and δ15N patterns of fungi from Finnish boreal forests enhance our knowledge of fungal functional diversity and indicate broad use of litter, wood and soil resources.

Wood ash recycling to forests is beneficial because it regains nutrients and prevents acidification, but wood ash application is restricted due to its cadmium (Cd) content. We question if Cd in wood ash represents a problem, since decreases in Cd bioavailability due to ash-induced pH changes may counteract increased total Cd concentration. We studied effects of wood ash (0, 3, 9 and 30 t ha −1 ) and lime (pH increase equivalent to the wood ash treatments) on growth and Cd uptake in Deschampsia flexuosa. After four months, we measured plant biomass and Cd accumulation, and extracted Cd from the soil using three different methods; HNO 3 (total), EDTA (chelator-based) and NH 4 NO 3 (salt-based). Wood ash and lime strongly stimulated plant growth. Cd concentration in the plant tissue decreased with wood ash and lime addition, and correlated positively with the NH 4 NO 3 extractable fraction of Cd in the soil. In contrast, HNO 3 and EDTA extracted more Cd with increased wood ash application. We conclude that wood ash amendment increases soil pH, total Cd concentration, nutrient levels and stimulates plant growth. However, it does not increase Cd accumulation in D. flexuosa, as pH-driven decreases in Cd bioavailability leads to reduced plant Cd uptake. Finally, soil bioavailable Cd is best determined using NH 4 NO 3 -extraction.

Bacon is a product made from pork meat that is subjected to curing, drying, and smoking. Researchers aim to associate the worldwide high-acceptance of such a product with the sensory and chemical properties of bacon. In this context, the objective of the present study was to characterize bacon samples smoked with different woods from reforestation using chemical and sensory methodologies, which were subsequently correlated by means of statistical multi-block analysis. Volatile compounds (VCs) of the smoked bacons were studied using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the consumer sensory perception was explored by the Napping technique. VCs were identified in smoked samples, which triggered sensory attributes related to odor, flavor, and texture, such as "smoky flavor", "salty taste", "pleasant taste", "woodsy flavor", and "hard texture". Multi-block analysis showed that the sensory attributes were associated with a group of VCs and not by a single compound.

Chelator-mediated Fenton chemistry is capable of reducing non-stochiometric amounts of iron via hydroquinone oxidation. These types of reactions have previously been demonstrated to be promoted by some lignocellulose degrading fungi in generating hydroxyl radicals to permit lignified plant cell wall deconstruction. Here we demonstrate that lignocellulose surfaces, when exposed by chemical treatment or fragmentation, can promote a similar multi-oxidative mechanism in the presence of iron. Iron reduction by lignin surfaces permits the generation of hydroxyl radicals in the cell wall to help explain fungal non-enzymatic cell wall deconstruction, and it also provides an explanation for certain phenomenon such as the anthropogenic generation of formaldehyde by wood. The mechanism also provides a basis for the generation of electrons by lignin that are required by certain fungal redox enzymes active in plant cell wall degrading systems. Overall, the data demonstrate that iron found naturally in lignocellulose materials will promote the oxidation of phenolic lignin compounds in the naturally low pH environments occurring within lignified plant cell walls, and that this activity is promoted by cell wall fragmentation.

We used manually spawned, field-deployed embryos of a common marine fish species, Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), to evaluate accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with an incomplete creosote-treated piling (CTP) removal project. Embryos near undisturbed 100-year-old CTPs (before removal) accumulated higher PAHs and exhibited higher cyp1a gene expression than embryos from reference areas. Embryos incubated close to CTP debris after CTP removal showed PAHs 90 times higher than reference areas up to a year after CTP removal. cyp1a fold-induction correlated with total embryo PAHs in all three years. Patterns of individual PAH chemicals differed slightly between embryos, wood sampled from CTPs, and passive samplers. This study illustrates the importance of using appropriate techniques and procedures to remove CTPs in aquatic environments to prevent release of toxic chemicals. Of particular concern is that incomplete CTP removal could expose sensitive life stages of fishes to chemicals that may reduce their survival.

A novel anatomically shaped ("anatomical") woodworking chisel handle was developed for wood scraping operation. 18 students participated in an evaluation study to compare the new handle against seven readymade handles of ¾-inch bench chisels in the context of a standard wood scraping task. A comfort questionnaire for hand tools (CQH) and a hand-based pain map were used for evaluating and comparing the handles. 'Functionality' and 'sweating' were found to be the most and least important comfort concerns, respectively. Maximum pain was reported at distal digit 1, and least pain at proximal digit 4. The anatomical handle was rated best for most of the comfort descriptors, least painful for most hand regions and took the least time for a standardized task.

In this study, the influences of feedstock and pyrolysis temperature on carbon fractions of biochar were investigated. Four types of organic wastes (rice straw (RS), pine wood (PW), pig manure (PM) and sewage sludge (SS)) were pyrolyzed at different temperatures (300 °C, 400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C and 700 °C). Biochar produced at low temperature exhibited high yields, high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content and unstable organic carbon content. In contrast, biochar formed at high temperature showed high C content and C stability with a low O/C and H/C ratios. In addition, the biochar pyrolyzed from PW contained the lowest DOC of the four biochar types. The properties of DOC fractions (F1, F2 and F3) released from biochar differed depending on feedstock, pyrolysis temperatures, and extraction procedures. The highest specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm of the F1 and F2 fractions were observed for RS biochar, suggesting that more aromatic organic matter was present in sequentially extracted fractions of RS biochar than in extracts from the other biochars. In addition, the hot water extracts (F2) mostly showed higher aromaticity than cold water extracts (F1). The stability of biochars was greatly enhanced at pyrolysis temperatures >500 °C. If the biochars produced in this study were to be used for carbon sequestration in soil, the first priority should be PW, followed in order by RS and PM.

Two hundred sixty-three fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples were collected over fourteen months in Fresno and Bakersfield, California. Samples were analyzed for organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water soluble organic carbon (WSOC), and 160 organic molecular markers. Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) source apportionment models were applied to the results in order to understand monthly and seasonal source contributions to PM2.5 OC. Similar source categories were found from the results of the CMB and PMF models to PM2.5 OC across the sites. Six source categories with reasonably stable profiles, including biomass burning, mobile, food cooking, two different secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) (i.e., winter and summer), and forest fires were investigated. Both the CMB and the PMF models showed a strong seasonality in contributions of some sources, as well as dependence on wind transport for both sites. The overall relative source contributions to OC were 24% CMB wood smoke, 19% CMB mobile sources, 5% PMF food cooking, 2% CMB vegetative detritus, 17% PMF SOA summer, 22% PMF SOA winter, and 12% PMF forest fire. Back-trajectories using the Weather Research and Forecasting model combined with the FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model (WRF-FLEXPART) were used to further characterize wind transport. Clustering of the trajectories revealed dominant wind patterns associated with varying concentrations of the different source categories. The Comprehensive Air Quality Model with eXtensions (CAMx) was used to simulate aerosol transport from forest fires and thus confirm the impacts of individual fires, such as the Rough Fire, at the measurement sites.

Partial or complete substitution of coal with renewable biomass like wood is a sustainable and effective solution to reduce the CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Utilization of these woods in the form of compact pellets facilitates in its handling and transportation with higher energy density.
